Sparky has an inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber material VSA IN HOUSE PROOF that is flexible and very durable.

2012 World Champion Tie-Down Roper, Tuf Cooper finished with $232,885 in cash for the season.

2013 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Tie-Down Roping

F

rom day one to the final calf to run through the Thomas and Mac Center in Las Vegas, the tie-down roping action at the 2013 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was second to none. Mixed into this year’s melting pot included the top 15 calf ropers, some of the most athletic calf horses in the world, a massive amount of cash payouts and of course the chance to win the grandest title in the rodeo world. Once again, the tie-down roping action claimed the spotlight as the battle for the world championship progressed through ten rounds. The action and excitement built bigger and bigger each night. The feat kicked off December 6 in Las Vegas, Nevada with fast times coming out of the field of tie-down ropers who set the pace for the entire event. Reigning world champion, Tuf Cooper cracked the event open with the round championship. His 7.4 second run earned him the first

big paycheck of the event. The winning run also put the pressure on the rest of the ropers including Justin Maass who came to Las Vegas in the number one position. Round two witnessed Clif Cooper taking the round championship with Tuf and past world champion Monty Lewis just behind him splitting second place. Clif earned the $18,257 first place round check with a run of 7.3seconds. In round three, the fast work of Cody Ohl took charge as he smoked his calf in 7.1 seconds to win the round and fill his pocket with cash. Justin Maass finally struck money in the third round winning second place behind Ohl with a time of 7.2-seconds. The race was on with Tuf and Maass gunning it down to see which one would finish on top. Of course there were 13 other cowboys in the mix charging for their piece of the action as well. Tuf fought back in round four

with his second round win. Earning the big check of the round, Tuf moved up into better contention for the championship, but of course Maass placed in the

round as well, keeping the battle tight. Veteran Fred Whitfield was also in the hunt of the big money in the round finishing second. The championship of round number five went home with one of the sports toughest athletes, Matt Shiozawa. Past NFR Average Champion and one of the consistent competitors in the field, Shiozawa posted a 7.2second run to earn the big paycheck of the day. Clint Robinson and Bradley Bynum split second place earning their share of the big payouts as well. Robinson shared another victory, this one coming in round number six where he and Ryan Jarrett divided the win. Their matching 7.2-second runs earned them each a little more than $16,300 in cash. Adam Gray started to appear as a front-runner for the Average and a long shot for the World Championship. He emerged into the huge payouts of the round claiming third place behind Robinson and Jarrett. Round seven was time for the rising stars of the sport to shine. The championship went home with the young hot-shot from Louisiana, Shane Hanchey. He claimed his round victory with a 7.6-second run. Right behind him was Cory Solomon who’s fast hands proved enough to win

second place. The heat began to build as the race for number one in the world standings tightened up. At the end of round eight, several were in the hunt with time running out to see who would be crowned the 2012 PRCA champion. Bradley Bynum hit the pay window in round eight roping and tying his calf in 7.4 seconds. Shane Hanchey was still on fire after his round championship, claiming second place in the round. Tuf and Maass who were the two front runners for the World Championship both placed in the round as well. Tuf won 4th and Maass won 5th place in the round. Some separation came in round nine when Tuf split third place three-ways with fellow ropers Cory Solomon and Monty Lewis. They all posted 7.2-second runs. First and second place was shared by Clint Robinson and Bradley Bynum who posted identical times of 6.9 seconds which were the fastest two times recorded throughout the entire rodeo. It all came down to round ten. The stakes were high, the chips all on the table and the two front runners, Tuf and Maass, squared off in a clash for the World Championship. Also among the race was long-time favorite, Cody Ohl who had an outside chance at

the title. In addition, the rodeo’s Average race would be the determining factor. Adam Gray was leading the average with less than a second in front of Maass. However, Tuf had secured third in the average and was also winning the world race. It all came down to the final pen of calves to see who would claim the biggest title of the year. Cody Ohl did what he had to do to put the pressure on. His 7.0second run won him the round and pushed him into contention for the title. Gray also did what he needed to do to help secure his shot at the Average race with an 8.3-second run that eventually earned him 7th in the round. Maass had tough luck in the final round finishing 9th with a time of 13.2-seconds. As the final tiedown roper of the rodeo, Tuf needed a smooth run to win his second World Championship. His final run of 7.9 seconds did just that. Winning 6th in the round, the smooth run pushed him over the top and earned him the title. Gray finished winning the Average title for a huge paycheck worth $46,821 in cash. He roped all ten of his calves in 87.8 seconds. Tuf’s average time of 90.6 seconds gave him second place in the Average that gave him an additional $37,987 in cash. As the season came to a close Tuf finished the year with total money won hitting $232,885 dollars. Maass, who led the world standings for much of the year, finished with $197,594 and once again Ohl was among the world’s top three calf ropers finishing the season with a grand total of $177,277 in cash. Back to back World Championships, Tuf at the young age of 22-years-old is no doubt the hottest calf roper in the country. As the son of a legend in the sport, Tuf has been conditioned to be a world champion for many years and fills the spot well with a very humble attitude, a winning smile and a very courteous champion. Courtesy of PRCA – ProRodeo Any more all-around world championships and Trevor Brazile will be forced to start counting with his toes. The Decatur, Texas, cowboy clinched his record 10th all-around gold buckle during the fifth round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Monday night thanks to a third-place go-round finish in team roping. It’s Brazile’s 17th career gold buckle, the second-most all-time to Guy Allen, who won 18 steer roping world championships. “It’s just such a relief,” Brazile said. “As much as I try not to let it affect anything, it kind of just releases me to go try to do whatever it takes to win the team roping, and just concentrate on that title. That is the immediate thing that I think about. And as far as the long-term stuff, 10 world titles is more than I ever could have dreamed of. It’s awesome.” Hutto, Tomball, TX, 20.7; 14. The USCRA headed into two different events over the past month and ropers flocked to both events to take advantage of the new formats and larger payouts. The USCRA was in Giddings on November 24 to let ropers celebrate Thanksgiving calf roping style. They enjoyed a day of roping that included a One-Header, a Three-Header and a few match ropings. The USCRA then headed to Stephenville, Texas for an event on December 8-9, 2012. This event included two full days of action. The USCRA will be heading to several more stops in the coming months and ropers who have not had a chance to see first hand the fresh ideas that are attracting more calf ropers to events, you better load up and hit the road!

ell, the town of Giddings, Texas, home of the USCRA, came close to having a World Champion in the sport of calf roping. If you follow pro rodeo, then you saw Gidding’s own, Justin Maass, take it right down to the last calf at the NFR. It was an exciting time for the small town of Giddings. Hats off to Justin Maass and Tuf Cooper for giving the calf roping world something positive to talk about for two weeks. Oh, and by the way, both of these ropers were USCRA Champions before they were top professional ropers. Hey, take a look at the Spring Classic USCRA Roping March 2nd and 3rd. There is going to be $4,000 added to the winners of

L

the four divisions. However, the winner’s bonus will depend on the number of ropers in each roping. In other words, the roping with the most ropers will have the largest bonus. This is your chance to call your friends and spread the word so we can make this a big roping. If you win this roping it will be to your benefit to be in the largest division of the weekend. If you read mine and Stran’s articles last month, then you probably noticed that both of us put emphasis on the scoring. Just want you to know that it was not planned that way. You might say we were both on the same page. Let’s hope that you get on the same page. Come rope with us! Lanham Mangold

W

e’re in Vegas for the National Finals and it’s a CRX’D very different year for me. Because of this article, National Roper’s Supply asked me to give a daily motivational talk each morning at their trade show at the MGM. I agreed and then realized what a huge undertaking I had signed up for. Now, I’m used to speaking and can do a reasonable job when talking to my students or when making brief comments to a crowd. What I’m not used to doing is speaking for fifteen to thirty minutes while delivering a message that I’m passionate about. I spent some time rereading articles and doing research until I came up with a theme with daily topics that relate to it. This theme is, “Whatever you do regularly will determine what you’ll have eventually.” My first topic was “Power of the Tongue,” meaning whatever you speak or talk about, whether it’s positive or negative, will have an effect on your daily life. If you regularly speak positively you will find yourself creating better habits and being generally happier. Some of my other topics include relationships, surrounding yourself with the right people, having balance in your life, and broadening your mind. NRS has been filming this and will eventually make it available on You Tube for everyone to watch. It’s ironic because I was dreading this because it was outside of my comfort zone. But once I started preparing and making notes I really started having a good time. It’s easy to turn down an opportunity or back away from something that intimidates us, but after this I

would encourage you to bite the bullet and relish the experience and what you can learn from it. Trying something new will only add to your personal resume of life experiences. To do something new and different, you have to decide to decide. It’s easy for me because I

can remember a specific time when I decided to get healthy. I decided to eat right, sleep more, and work out. I focused on being healthy in every area of my physical well-being. I started to accumulate and soak up information from trainers, doctors, or articles I read. Then I

applied that information and made it my own. I want to thank NRS for giving me the opportunity to not only motivate people, but also to expand my horizons and have a chance to learn something new. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

New Year’s Resolution

N

ew Year’s resolutions year in and year out are made, kept and procrastinated on. I would like to challenge you this year to make a resolution, should you choose to accept it, that will change your life forever. Many are not courageous enough to accept this challenge. If you are one of the few who are committed to becoming like Christ, this will be your greatest accomplishment. Your challenge is to live a life of unconditional love. We had two dogs at the house. One dog was the most loving dog you’d ever find, and the other dog would love you as long as you were doing what he wanted you to do. The difference between Peanut and Jack was that Peanut’s love was unconditional and Jack’s love was conditional. Jack would say, “I’ll love you if you’ll give me a ride on the 4-wheeler.” And Peanut would say, “I’ll love you no matter what.” I don’t have to tell you which dog did the most whining, or which dog got the most love. Loving God and loving people is an individual choice. It is not something God imposes on us, or something we impose on others. The conditions we impose on others will be the same conditions we receive from them. It is called the law of

sowing and reaping. You really do reap what you sow. Something we all have in us is a thing called the sin nature. What that means is that in the flesh we always want our way. If we have Jack’s attitude in life, because of pride, in our minds we always think we are right, even if we’re wrong. God’s love is unconditional. Everyone wants to be loved, no matter how tough or calloused they pretend to be. If you choose to continue to be hard and calloused – your harvest in life will be the germ of your own decay. PRO  TIPS

PRACTICE WITH THE PROS How To Train for Calf Roping It’s the New Year! Calf roping is a fast paced rodeo event. It requires strength, excellent timing and skill. Make sure you practice your calf roping skills on a training system before attempting it with a horse and calf. This is safer and creates less frustration for beginners when they are learning. It is also a great tool for seasoned ropers. It is beneficial to find an experienced calf roper and trainer like Shane Steeves (www.4realhorsetraining.com) or PRCA calf roper, Josh Peek, to teach the necessary skills. They can observe your runs, critique you and your horse, and point out areas that need improvement. A pro clinic is also a way to gain this knowledge. Many pros use the Tuf Kaf calf roping training system.

800.827.7613

The Tuf Kaf, calf roping dummy and training system, simulates a real calf, but allows you to learn in a controlled and safe manner all the proper steps needed to create muscle memory. Tuf Kaf over emphasizes everything in calf roping. It’s purposely made to create muscle memory. The flank handle is made deeper to over emphasize, the longer legs make you keep your elbow out, and one must roll their wrist and place the rear legs to wrap. It also teaches you to keep the legs low when gathering to avoid a calf kicking during a live run. There are many other features that the Tuf Kaf has to teach proper technique. You can practice roping this dummy from a horse or on the ground. Now you are ready to “Practice to Win.” Casey Sellers SS Roping, LLC

W

elcome 2013! It is time to throw out the old calendars and pin a new one up on our walls. This is a time of year we all look ahead to what’s to come, but really, by doing this, we all look back over the past year. We do this because we can base our plans on the upcoming year by looking at what happened in the past. It really is the only thing on which we can base what we want to change. Some may find they had a great year in 2012 and may not have many things they want changed for the New Year. However, there is probably not too many individuals who fall into this category. Most of us, me included, look to the past year to see what we need to pay more attention to for the upcoming year. In most cases looking back over the past year allows us a chance to at least see what needs to be tweaked, what needs to be paid attention too a little more or what needs to be completely thrown out and started over again. For the most part, we all have these types of things in our lives whether they are at work, with family or within our hobbies. One thing the New Year offers is a chance to start over, wipe the slate clean for the most part and charge into the New Year. I applaud people who recognize this and continue to go forward. I am sure we have all read some sort of article about how someone who finally reached success explains how many times he or she failed on their way to accomplishing their goal. Michael Jordan, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney and many others throughout history were

no doubt fighters and continued to strive forward. Their lives are inspirations. The New Year offers that to all of us. It might be a time to completely start over, a time to change or a time just to twist things up a little to help reach our goals. I still believe most people are fighters. Most never give up andVSA they face their endeavors head on. In many ways continuing to change, adapt and move ahead is the ultimate goal in life and

we may not even notice it. Some people will never be content and will never believe they can reach their goals, but really they do, they just continue to set new ones to fill that desire to never quit fighting. The New Year is here and for those who are ready to fight on, I stand with you.PROOF IN HOUSE CRX’D Until next month, I wish you all the best of luck in life. Ryan Davis
