THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate. FastBack “Ask a Pro” Tips from the Fast Back Professionals each month Q. I just started heading and am wondering of the entire line of ropes, which, including the lay, would be best for a beginner to start off using. A. Al Benson suggests an XS Natural (if you prefer a four-strand) or a Grabber (if you prefer a threestrand). Both of these ropes have enough weight so you can easily feel the tip. As you progress and get more comfortable handling your rope you will probably end up with a lighter rope. Using a four-strand or three-strand rope is a personal preference that you will eventually figure out. Good luck! LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5
9th Annual
RISING STARS CALF ROPING On November 25-28, 2010, the town of Duncan, Oklahoma played host to the 9th Annual Rising Stars Calf Roping. Once again, contestants came from all across the United States and Canada to compete against a record breaking 684 calf ropers for cash and prizes totaling over $116,000.00. Since producers Chris Neal and Mark Holder first envisioned a roping of this magnitude, they have continued to go above and beyond to make each year’s roping and prizes better than the year before. Thanksgiving Day started early, as 70 - 12 & Under Tie Down ropers made their way into the arena to start off the first day of competition. The first round went to Logan Cook of Alto, TX with a time of 12.2. Austin Atkinson from Anderson, TX dominated the second Go with a time of 10.6, but the third round went back to Logan Cook with an 11.0. 6 • MARCH 2011
For the first time in the history of the roping, the top 12 in the Average were introduced with the AllStar ropers and roped their short go calf right after the first round of the Shoot-Out. Ty Harris, the winner of the short go with a time of 10.2 also took the fastest calf award, a Rockin Rope can, but it was Logan Cook who won the Average and took home a pocketful of money and the Cactus saddle. For the first time, Oxbow Tack donated the saddle for the

youngest tie down roper who was 7-year-old Clarke Gordon from Terry, MS. Thanksgiving Day continued with 81 “best of the best “All-Star ropers who all had their eye on the Hogg saddle. The first round was fast and furious as Ryan Jarrett turned in a time of 8.3 to win the round. But in the second Go they turned up the heat when Cade Swor stuck it on one in 7.7 seconds which earned him the custom rope can made by Lankford Leather for the fastest calf. Dillon Holder of Vian, OK kept up the pace in the third Go with a time of 7.9.

The Average was won by Cimmaron Boardman with a total of 27.3 on three head which earned him a spot in the All-Star Shoot-Out and a 100x custom hat donated by K bar F Hatters. After an amazing opening ceremony by announcer Tim Fuller, featuring members from the National Guard Armory and flag presentation by Tiffany McClure, the top twelve came back for the exciting All-Star Shoot-Out. After the first round was roped, the top eight cowboys came back to rope their second calf. Then the top four competed for their spot in the finals. The fourth place spot went to Ryan Jarrett, third place was Ricky Hyde, second place went to Caddo Lewallen, and the number one man in the Shoot-Out was Caleb Smidt of Huntsville, TX who captured the title and took home the prestigious Hogg saddle with the silver hardware on it donated by Tommy D’s. Friday morning started at 8 a.m. when we were greeted by the Duncan Convention and Visitors Bureau with free coffee, juice, and doughnuts. Then 79 13-15 Tie Down ropers made their way into the arena to kick start the day. Both the first and second rounds went to Reid Zapalac of Smithville, TX. Then the third Go was captured by Westyn Hughes with a time of 9.7 while the second place man, Quinton Inman was close behind with a time of 9.9. The Short Go was won by Kyle Parrish of Dale, TX when he stopped the clock with a time of 10.2 seconds. But it was a Ringgold, GA. cowboy, Cole Watkins, who roped tough enough to win the Average and take home the beautiful Cactus saddles sponsored by Cinderella Roping Horses! The afternoon brought an even bigger crowd when the 12 & Under Breakaway got started with 101 eager ropers. This was one of the largest, toughest and fastest roping of the weekend and was pretty much dominated by Cooper Lee of Quitman, LOOPS MAGAZINE • 7

AR. He won the first go with a 2.32, placed third in the second go with a 2.72, won the third go with a 2.34, won the short go with a 3.10, and won the Average with a total of 10.48. Logan Cook won the second go with a time of 2.53. Cooper Lee took home the Cactus saddle donated by The Perfect Calf and a rope can for the fastest calf. Wow, what a roping for such a young age group! With two days down and two to go, Saturday morning started off with 97 13-15 Breakaway ropers. Everyone got a little piece of the pie when Tanner Stec of Bassett, NE won the first round with 2.03, 8 • MARCH 2011
Chance Oftedahl from Pemberton, MN captured the second go with a 2.03, Mason Carter from Checotah, OK won the third go with a blazing 2.0 and also took home a rope can for the fastest calf. But it was Clint Kelley from Tahlequah, OK who won the short go and the Average with a total of 10.21 and took home a beautiful fully-tooled Paul Ammerman saddle sponsored by Willard Rope Co. The 19 & Under Girls Breakaway brought the day to a close, but not in a slow way. If anyone ever said that girls can’t rope, they should have been watching this roping. The first round started out with a fast time of 2.56 turned in by Anglea Bartley of Emporia, KS. But the times in each round got even faster when Harley Thomas turned in a time of 2.31, and Brandi Hollenbeck of Hutchinson, KS didn’t let that slow her down when she roped her calf in 2.24 to win the third go. Things just kept getting hotter when Samantha Little won the short go with a speedy time of 2.18 and cinched the Average with a total of 11.65 to win the Cactus saddle sponsored by Joplin Stockyards and a Rockin Rope can for the fastest calf. There’s no better way to start a cowboy’s day than to hear from Rev. Roger Myers as he blessed us with his words at our Cowboy Church Service. Then 125 of the toughest 16-19 calf ropers got things underway as Chase Williams from Stephenville, TX got off to a fast start when he won the first round with a time of 8.7. But things only got faster as Shane Overby from Morton, MS roped and tied one in 7.6 to win the second go, but the third go was even more heated as Marty Yates won the round and the fastest calf rope can with 7.5 seconds. But Chase Williams came back to win the short go and the Average and took home the custom Relentless fully tooled Cactus saddle sponsored by Cactus Saddlery.

Additional prizes were donated to the short go champions of each roping by Embrace Victory, rope cans to the fastest calf donated by Smith Brothers, custom spurs by Gordy Alderson went to Reserve Average champion in the 19 & under girls breakaway, Hooey Loop breakaways were given to
all short go contestants in the breakaway, and Willard strings were given to all tie down short go contestants. A new award this year for the 16-19 tie down was a $1,000 scholarship to the champion high school senior calf roper donated by NEO college and rodeo coach Kolby Ungeheuer of Miami, OK. A special thank you to Kirby Kelly and WW for supplying the roping chute and arena set up, Cinch for supplying all of Rising Stars staff with shirts for the weekend, Quality Inn of Duncan for donating rooms and being our host hotel, Boulet Boots for donating certificates for free boots, and Ariat for donating bags and additional prizes. For the Rising Stars Calf Roping producers, Chris Neal and Mark Holder, 2010 was truly an eventful year. In a year when things were so uncertain about the future, they feel really blessed that the entries were up 107 more than last year, the sponsorships exceeded the past by leaps and bounds, and the thanks and praise spoke louder than ever before. None of it would have been possible without all those who participated in one way or another. So to all the CRX’D contestants, sponsors, suppliers, vendors, work crew, family members and the town of Duncan, they say a heartfelt “THANK YOU” for your continued support and dedication to the Rising Stars Calf Roping. Hope the Stars keep Rising for you in 2011! K For complete results visit risingstarscalfroping.com

W
e have all said it, thought it, and even wished for it every time we look at a rodeo draw sheet or write that check for a fresh pen of practice cattle. Not too big, not too fast, but not too slow, one that hits the end of the rope with all his might, every time. One that runs straight or fades to the right, can take a jerk or be switched and waiting on the end of it, but nobody dreams of that stainer or the kicker. Practice cattle that would never die, never even get sick, never need feed, never need a day off, or never have too many runs on them… Hmmm… Practice cattle like that and unicorns would have a lot in common as far as mythical creatures go. And so out of the pearly gates and mythical fairytale creature dust comes such an animal… (Okay, maybe it was more like a Wyoming blizzard and my welding shop doors, but stay with me on this…) Having roped calves all my life, I have spent more than my fair share of time and funds chasing perfect calves. While I have caught a few, the losses far outweigh the victories. Being handicapped with a relentless competitive edge for anything that can be won or lost and hating the taste of defeat, a year ago we set out to perfect this mythical creature. While typical industry roping dummies have been around for years, their ability to have an infinite amount of runs every night and to control the pace and direction of the calf during training, tuning or practice has proven to be worth its weight in gold. The down side is that they typically lack the “real factor.” They don’t look like cattle, they don’t rope like live cattle, they don’t tie like live cattle, they don’t handle like live cattle, and the list goes on and on… Modern plastics technology has helped the look and feel, but not provided the handling or motion of live cattle. 16 • MARCH 2011
The Perfect Calf® We have spent 18 months building this sled calf from the ground up with three key goals that we never deviated from: 1. This calf will mimic the motions, the weight, and the feel of live cattle. 2. This calf will allow the roper the flexibility to hang on to their slack and switch the calf so that you can flank and tie like a live calf, or lay it down their back and daylight the calf. 3. Never under any circumstances should you not be able to rope because the sled calf is broke. These three goals sound simple enough, but when pursued to the level of perfection we demanded, I assure you, this is the The Perfect Calf. They’re so real, we need a brand inspection to get them out of the state! Get your hands on one today. Check out our website: www.theperfectcalf.com or give Bill a call 307-299-1521.

he other day a friend and I were talking about my last article about letting kids enjoy sports and competition. I realize the person I’m really trying to reach and speak to is me. I truly feel that whatever I write about is what the Lord is trying to convey to me. I want people to know I don’t have this figured out and am a work in progress. In trying to broaden my mind, I’ve come to believe that if you want to be small-minded you talk about people; if you want to be average-minded you talk about events; and if you want to be bigminded, you talk about ideas. So I
told my friend about an experiment I did six or seven years ago while warming up for the slack at Laughlin. I’d heard some brainteasers and while visiting during warm up, I would throw them out to people. It was amazing to see how people reacted. Those who wanted to be small-minded didn’t seem interested and distanced themselves from me. Others would come back all through the day and make guesses and ask questions. I wanted to challenge people and in turn it separated the three categories of people. What I found was the people
who kept coming back and trying to figure out the riddle were the people who were working hard in their life to better themselves, people with a “can do” attitude. This spoke loudly to me. Now when I look back and think about where those people were in life it’s not surprising. There are many people who have a lot of ability who don’t make it in rodeo. Then there are people who don’t have as much ability but have a great attitude and do make it. You can win because of ability but you can win consistently because of mental toughness. That kind of attitude will help

you appreciate life and make the most of your time. It’s easy for me to get caught up in getting from event to event and considering the time in between as wasted or down time. Time is what we make of it. If I’m not careful I’ll miss out on the real events in life, which is a Saturday at home with my family. Even if it’s just the boys and me riding horses on the
ranch, that’s the real joy in life. This relates to last month’s article and how hard parents sometimes push their kids. Whether it’s the kids, or us we need to stay in the moment and enjoy what we’re doing. This is not a particularly joyful time for me because I’m having shoulder surgery in the next couple of days. I don’t know whether I’ll be out a
month or six months. But on the flip side I’m getting ready for the birth of my little girl and I’m going to be home and not have to miss any of it. Hopefully my shoulder won’t be so bad that I’ll be out six months, but if that’s the case it will just give me that much more time at home to enjoy my family. Till next time, God Bless and I’ll see you down the line.
Take-A-Hold
P
hilippians 3:12-14 says, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” I Cor. 1:27 adds, “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty.” In life it is a wise person who knows when and what to take-a-hold of and what to turn loose of. One of the things that I believe impresses God is the passion by which we live life. When our passion becomes directed at the purpose for which we were created, that is when we find extreme success, as well as peace in our lives. There have been many people who have gone through life shooting from the hip, so to speak, never really taking aim at what they were designed or created to do. In the horse world, there is an incredible variety of types and breeds of horses. Even in the quarter horse world we have horses that were bred for specific purposes and events. Why would we take a Clydesdale that was bred to pull a load, and make a roping horse out of him? Why would we take an Arabian that was
bred for endurance and hook him up to a hay wagon to pull a load? Likewise, we as individuals were born and bred and created for a specific purpose. How do we know that purpose? The creator, who is the master of the universe, actually sees a small sparrow when he falls to the ground. He knows every flower by name, and catches every tear that falls from our face. If He cares that much for birds and flowers and tears, how much more would He want to reveal to us our reason for being? In this coming year, my challenge to you is to read the most powerful book, inspired by the creator of this universe, the Bible. Also, if you are interested in your reason for being, I would strongly suggest a conversation with your creator daily through a simple thing we call prayer. Matthew 6:33 says “If you will seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, all of the other things will be added unto you. It sounds like a deal that is too good to refuse. Take-a-hold and don’t let go for anything because that will reveal your eternal dwelling place. Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 1627 Eva. ell, I have to say the USCRA Ropers Forum is making a big return. Looks like the need for a place to ask and answer questions, post a horse ad or just visit to get a feel about the sport in general has been fulfilled. I think it is great that the USCRA offers this free to ropers. It is really big of them to do so, without concerns about ropers having a free voice to say both positive and negative things about the sport or the association. The forum is a great place for ropers and I think the USCRA does the sport a great service by hosting it. On a kind of related subject, what are your thoughts on Facebook, Twitter or other social networking sites? Talk about connecting the world, I thought email was cool, but now I can see what old friends and people I have met along the way throughout my life are up to with a few clicks of my mouse or a slide of my finger across my phone. I believe the future of these sites will far outreach what we are seeing right now. There is a lot of talk about how these sites are changing the way people pretty much live life in both positive and negative
ways. I have heard the stories of how old flames are reacquainted and ruining marriages, or how homes are being broken into because thieves know where you are by the fact that you checked into a resort in Tahiti via social networking. But there are also some really good things coming from these sites as well. The positive side of Social Networking is in the headlines as well. They can be a great marketing tool for businesses or entrepreneurs, they can bring families closer together, or at least they can make people laugh at the one friend they have who always posts humorous remarks. In any case, Social Networking is here to stay and I believe you can use it to your benefit, as long as you put common sense first. Maybe you don’t let everyone know when you check into a hotel or are at an event across the country. Maybe you don’t become friends with a girlfriend or boyfriend that your other half might not be so thrilled about. And maybe most importantly, remember that in many cases words can be destructive whether they are said or posted on a board somewhere. K
