he 12th Annual Cinch Rising Stars Calf Roping rallied through another awesome year as it hosted 667 ropers from across the United States and Canada who came to rope for the first ever $5,000 added money which brought this year’s total cash payout to over $95,000. The total number of entries were up, which is our goal each and every year, and much of that can be contributed to many of our newest added features. One of the biggest hits was the new video/replay board where the kids and parents could

watch each run as it was happening as well as in slow motion. Sponsor logos and commercials were displayed throughout the event on the board. Oxbow saddles were awarded to the Average champions, custom rope cans to Fastest Time winners, Broken Arrow Silver Co. buckles to Go Round winners as well as the Reserve Tiedown youngest roper. The youngest Tiedown roper saddle went to 8 year old Chance Fleming from Bloomfield, Iowa and was once again donated by Oxbow Tack. Willard Ropes presented the piggin strings for all Tiedown Short Go contestants, and Nothin But Neck breakaways went to all Short Go Breakaway ropers. The Reserve Champion in the 16-19 Tiedown received custom spurs donated by Gordy Alderson and K Bar F Hatters of Sallisaw, Ok. once again donated a 100X hat to the 16-19 Tiedown Short Go winner. NEO College of Miami, Ok. awarded a $4,000 scholarship to each of the Average winners in the 19 & Under Girls Breakaway and the 16-19 boys Tiedown. Of course without the continued support of our generous sponsors, none of these exceptional prizes would be possible. From our Platinum Plus Sponsors like Jason’s Deli, WW, and Oxbow Tack, to the Bronze Star Sponsors, we appreciate all, both big and small, that help continue to make theCinch Rising Stars Calf Roping bigger and better each year. We would like to welcome our newest sponsor, Cinch, and thank them for becoming the official Title Sponsor for theCinch Rising Stars Calf Roping. ontestants from over fifteen states and Canada came together in Tulsa Oklahoma for the 19th Annual Mike Johnson’s World’s Richest Calf Roping and Sherrylynn Johnson’s Invitational Barrel Race. Over the two days, December 21 and 22 in Tulsa Oklahoma, things heated up at the Ford Truck Arena as some of the toughest calf ropers and barrel racers in North America gathered to make their run at the over $140,000 in cash and prizes that were awarded. The action started a little early this year with the addition of the Ultimate Calf Ropings, American Qualifier Calf Roping in the Mustang Arena next door on Friday the 20. Everywhere you looked there was calf roping, and even if you couldn’t make it to the event in person you could watch it on the live webcasting. The webcast was a nice addition, as there were 10,808 hits that watched the action over the internet. The events provided some tough calf roping and some smoking fast runs in both the calf 8 • FEBRUARY 2014

roping and barrel racing. At the end of the day on Saturday is was Ryan Jarrett who totaled up the most money won, as he went home the 2013 Mike Johnson World’s Richest Calf Roping Champion. When the barrels were picked up on Saturday and the times were totaled, it was Katelyn McLeod that beat the pack to claim the Sherrylynn Johnson Invitational Barrel Race Champion title. New this year on Sunday was the Mike Johnson’s World’s Richest Junior Calf Roping and Sherrylynn Johnson’s Invitational Junior Barrel Race. The newly crowned champions for the first year’s events were Tyler Milligan as the 17 and under Calf Roping Champion and Jackie Ganter as the Sherrylynn Johnson 17 and under Barrel Racing Champion for 2013. It was another great year of calf roping and barrel racing at this event as Mike and Sherrylynn Johnson provided a first class production. Mike and Sherrylynn go above and beyond to make this an event that contestants will

remember and look forward to putting on the calendar for next year. With this year’s addition of the junior events, it only goes to show the commitment that the Johnson’s have to supporting the sport of calf roping and barrel racing. Thank you! Hanchey Shows Family’s Winning Form In Lakeland Hanchey’s little brother – World Champion Tie-down Roper Shane Hanchey – wanted his sibling to travel to some rodeos with him in 2014, so he gave him a little nudge. “Shane bought me my card so I’d go with him this year,” Hanchey said. “My wife Kristin is a barrel racer and she got her card too, so it’s a family affair.” Renewing his PRCA card has already paid off, as Hanchey’s 8.9second run was good enough for the tie-down roping win at the Lakeland Rodeo Classic. “My wife and I are more of circuit competitors, but Shane is threatening to sign me up for Salinas,” Hanchey said with a laugh. “I use going to rodeos as practice to get horses ready for Shane, and with so much going on at the ranch we don’t get out much.” Hanchey runs a large horsetraining operation in Okeechobee, Fla., and estimates he has about 450 horses. On top of training horses for a number of disciplines, Hanchey has trained horses for his brother since Shane was in high school. The best of the bunch is Reata, who carried Shane to the 2013 world title. “Shane is pretty well off to have me on his team, but I’m pretty lucky as well to know how Shane handles himself and his animals,” Hanchey said. “You can’t even imagine how proud I was of him winning the world. I figured out that I wasn’t cut out for the NFR, so I started focusing on what I could do in rodeo. I’m living the dream through him, but also living my own dreams of training horses for the NFR.”

Jason Hanchey picked up his first rodeo check in three years when he won the Lakeland, Florida Rodeo Classic. Hanchey’s time of 8.9 seconds was .8 seconds better than second place Ben Mayworth. Jason Hanchey hadn’t rodeoed in three years, but with a little encouragement from his brother, he made the trip to Lakeland January 18-19.

The win in Lakeland was Hanchey’s first rodeo check since the 2011 season, and he says while Shane may want him to come on the road more often, he’s perfectly content to keep training horses and staying close to home. “I’ve been blessed to be able to work with some tremendously talented horses and it seems like we have an endless supply,” Hanchey said. “My wife is an extremely good record keeper, which helps us keep track of the horses.” Hanchey starts training the horses at age 3 and figures out what discipline they will be best for. The horse he rode during his victory in Lakeland – 10-year-old Speck – serves a very important function outside the arena. “He’s the horse my 3-year-old daughter Kaycee rides,” said Hanchey, who also has a stepdaughter, Ryleigh. “He won at Lakeland and then was at a youth rodeo for 12 hours the next day with Kaycee.” Other winners in Lakeland were all-around champion Juan Alcazar Jr. ($752, steer wrestling and team roping), bareback rider Lane Lerche (71 points), steer wrestler Alcazar Jr. (5.0 seconds), team ropers Dillon Bird and Jerry Courson (6.2 seconds), saddle

bronc rider Cole Bilbro (81 points), bull rider Dustin Muncy (81 points) and barrel racer Victoria Williams (14.05 seconds).

Bill Collins Bill Collins, a four-time Canadian tie-down roping champion (1951-52, 1956-57) whose photo once appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, died Dec. 31 at the age of 89. Collins was recognized as an exceptional horseman who did more for the horse industry in Canada than perhaps any other individual. Not only was Collins a great competitor, winning multiple events in roping, cutting, and other disciplines, he served as a judge, teacher and industry leader.

James E. Parr James Parr, a former Rodeo Cowboys Association tie-down roper and steer roper, died Dec. 13 in Norman, Oklahoma, at the age of 86. Parr joined the RCA in 1950 and in later years competed in the Senior Steer Roping Association, winning the SSRA world championship in 1992 at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK. LOOPS MAGAZINE • 17

Written in Red, The Words of Jesus

I

find it interesting that the first recorded words of Jesus were when His parents found him in the temple. Jesus was teaching after they had been in town for the celebration of the Passover. Here are His words “Why did you seek me? Did you not know that I must be about my Father’s business?” If you are a parent, you know how disturbing it can be when you are in a group of people and your child is not where he/she should be. The context seems to say that Mary and Joseph should have known where Jesus was. I believe that the implication is that He was where He was supposed to be, but their thinking was that He should have been somewhere else. Many people are offended when somebody speaks of the church as a business. I would submit to you that church is the most important business, because it’s God’s business. Many people think that church is the building or the denomination. The building and the denomination are actually man-made while people and the Word of God is God-made. That is God’s business. Too many times buildings and denominations separate and divide rather than bring God’s family together

20 • FEBRUARY 2014

and bless Him with their worship. While God can bless denominations that bless Him and His church, too many times the contrary is true. Division and conflict can be the rule of the day instead of God’s business, which is to love people that seem to be unlovable. Jesus, even as a boy, was missing from the place that others thought he should be. The message that I have received from these words, written in red, is that you have to be missing from the wrong place to be found in the right place! Because if you are in the wrong place, you won’t be in the right place. God’s business is eternal. All other business is temporal.
