Hooey Catching on in the Industry No doubt, little things catch on inside circles of bigger things. Sports, recreation, markets of all kinds seem to find something to give them an identity. Football jerseys worn by fans, t-shirts with favorite logos, and a lot of other things seem to group people. Just by looking at what someone is wearing, you can sense their likes and that goes for many in the rodeo community. Of course the cowboy hat, boots and buckles give them an identity of their own, but recently, there has been a new look that has given them a new look, so to speak. Hooey has been around for a few years and more and more cowboys and cowgirls are digging the cool designs of their caps and clothing. With a wild-side attached to great design, the Hooey image has become somewhat of a standard for many who rope and rodeo. Hooey has continued to grow and given their unique logo fresh designs that are gaining popularity. Today, they have a few new apparel items that are hitting shelves across the county.

Innovative Impact Products L.L.C. developed Zoombang to protect against forces formerly impossible to guard against with traditional materials. Zoombang is a lightweight polymer material. It is soft, comfortable, and supportive at rest. But on impact, the material instantly changes to behave as an elastic solid, dissipating and transferring energy from blunt force trauma, shock, vibration, and outside g-forces. Zoombang provides unprecedented protection. It literally manages energy by dissipating and transferring it away from the body. Zoombang works to reduce injury and dramatically improve comfort for applications where protection is critical. Zoombang is widely used for its protection against injury in contact sports, medical applications, and hazardous work environments. Zoombang protective gear is used by every team in the NFL. The NHL, MLB, NASCAR, and other high profile venues have found favor with the product for its ability to protect their elite athletes. For the past year, Innovative Impact Products L.L.C. has worked closely with Cowboy Armour and Classic Equine® to develop a material specially designed for applications used to protect equine athletes and keep them in the game. Hard, stiff materials such as PVC offer a reasonable degree of protection from impact, but they do not conform to the user and they are certainly not comfortable. Gels, open cell, and closed cell EVA foams provide comfort, but offer little protection against blunt force trauma. Zoombang performs as a viscous fluid material at rest where it flows and conforms to the anatomy providing comfort, cushioning, and support. However, the visco-elastic material instantly reacts to sudden sheer forces like shock. Upon impact, it changes to an elastic solid, dissipating energy and reacting directly in proportion to the amount of energy applied. Once the energy dissipates, the material instantly transforms back to its soft, semi-solid state. In each new Zone series pad, a strategically placed, air vented Zoombang™ insert is surrounded by choice pad materials. Zone™ Series saddle pads are available in a Felt/Felt, Wool Top, Felt/Fleece and a Suede/Felt. Visit www.equibrand.com to learn more.

Horse Health
First-Aid for Horses If you own a horse, chances are at some point you will face an emergency or injury. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if you are dealing with a life-threatening situation that requires immediate treatment from a trained professional or if it is something you may be able to deal with on your own. A key component in any emergency is having a good first-aid kit for your horse. It is a good idea to have one on hand at home as well as in the trailer for times when you are traveling with your horse. The necessary items to consider in a quality first-aid kit include: • Bandage scissors • Gauze pads • Cotton leg wraps (2) • Ace wrap or vetwrap • White medical tape (1 or 2 rolls) • Hoof pick • Wound cleanser (betadine scrub) • Saline solution • Hydrogen peroxide • Antibiotic wound ointment • Syringes • Eye wash • Eye ointment, • Thermometer • Hemostats and tweezers • Duct tape • Stethoscope (optional) • Phone numbers of local veterinarian 12 • MARCH 2012

and 1-800-GET-A DVM. This is a toll-free number developed by the AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) that will assist you in finding a veterinarian in an area that you are not familiar with. This may seem like a lot, but most first-aid material for horses will help in the critical times when your horse falls victim to both serious and common emergencies.
When to Call Your Veterinarian? Even for veteran horse owners, there is always the question of when to call a veterinarian if you feel your horse is sick or in need of professional help. Certain emergencies need to be responded to immediately by a veterinarian including: • A cut or gash with a lot of bleeding • If your horse is lying down and won’t get up or is rolling on the ground extensively • A very cloudy eye or if your horse keeps an eye closed • If your horse won’t put weight on a leg, seems very lame or won’t walk • If your horse has a fever >102 F • If your horse is coughing excessively, choking or seems to have difficulty breathing
Bleeding A lot of people worry when their horse is bleeding. Although there should be concern for the cause of the bleed, it is not unusual to see quite a bit of bloodloss before becoming too worried. A horse has a tremendous volume of blood. An adult horse has nearly 12 gallons of blood circulating through its body and it can lose over three gallons before showing signs of shock. This does not mean that first-aid should not be considered for a horse that is bleeding. On the contrary, as a responsible owner you should take action to stop the bleeding. Allow at least 30-60 minutes for fresh wounds to stop bleeding. If a wound has severe bleeding apply a pressure bandage directly over the wound to slow it down until the vet arrives. Apply pressure to the wound with gauze or cloth folded several times to create a thick pad and apply Vet Wrap firmly over the padding. If location of bleeding prevents your being able to wrap it, hold it in place until bleeding stops. If the pad becomes blood soaked don’t remove it, just add another pad and continue to apply pressure. Large fresh wounds usually need to be sutured to promote healing and minimize scarring. Contact your veterinarian. Early attention improves the chances of uncomplicated healing.
10 Tips About Colic
Every horse owner should become familiar with signs of colic which include going off feed, not drinking, playing in their drinking water, looking at their side, pawing the ground, stretching out, repeatedly posturing to urinate, lying down, rolling or violent thrashing. Here are ten important things to know about colic and your horse. 1. Know your veterinarian’s phone number. Keep it posted in your barn or home and easily accessible for you, your family and anyone in contact with the horse. 2. Horse owners should call the veterinarian immediately when you

ecently I was asked why some people progress faster than others when learning to rope. There can be number of reasons, but usually the most obvious is the horse they’re riding. It’s pretty common to see a youngster or novice show up at a school riding a young horse that doesn’t know any more than they do. This is the worst possible scenario for learning and a recipe for disaster. Neither will enjoy it and it’s impossible to learn and teach a horse when you don’t
know what you’re doing. Sometimes novice ropers show up to a school with highpowered $20,000 horses. Riding an open caliber, expensive horse will not make you learn any faster. In fact, the horse will more than likely be ruined and the kid will get discouraged. I wouldn’t let my boys learn on Destiny. First, she would run out from under them, and if they happened to stay on, she would probably throw them over her head when she stopped. You wouldn’t dream of
teaching your kid to drive in a Ferrari. Recently at one of my schools there was a young man riding one of the best little horses I’ve ever seen. He didn’t stand out as a kid who had grown up with a rope in his hand. But, by the second day, he hadn’t missed a calf and it was obvious to me that a lot of it was due to his horse. This horse couldn’t necessarily run like the wind, but he just did everything right for him. In fact, he reminded me a lot of the horse I rode at the

finals. This horse scored like a post and when he dropped his hand, the horse took off. He was just a great solid little horse and this is exactly what you’re looking for as a parent or novice. You need an older horse to learn on that will go do the same thing every time. When riding a solid horse, you will have more fun, and the more fun you have, the better you will get. I’ve bought more than one horse in my career that was over 21 and paid pretty big money for them. If you take good care of them they’ll last as good as a young horse, sometimes better. Find someone you trust in this business to help you find this kind of horse. People think they can’t afford this kind of horse when in reality there are horses getting older every day that need a good home. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line. If there’s anything you would like me to write about, drop me an email at strant@aol.com.

Redefining Prosperity
I
n our world there are several definitions of prosperity. So many times we define prosperity as how much money we have, how new our
vehicle is, how big our trailer is and how nice the home is that we live in. In Luke 12:13 it says “Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for
not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.” In other words, the prosperity that is defined by God’s word has very little to do with possessions. It has everything to do with obtaining peace with God. I would submit to you that there are many extremely unhappy wealthy people. Also, there are many extremely unhappy poor people. You see we strive throughout our life thinking the more we obtain, the happier we will be. While it is true that possessions can make you more comfortable physically, the deception is that they will bring peace. The scripture says that God owns the cattle on a thousand hills. God will only take possession of his cattle when we understand that we are merely stewards of his blessings and that we really don’t own anything. Eventually, we all have an appointment with an event called death. You can’t take your cows or your possessions with you. The scripture says “what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his soul?” Many times we find ourselves looking for good investments. Jesus said, “Store up your treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not corrupt and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” You will never have the peace of God as long as your greed outweighs your love for God. In Christianity we often hear the words “give it to God”. The older I get, the more I realize that stuff comes and goes but God’s word will remain forever. If we value God’s word, and we’re obedient to His word, we will be the wealthiest people on earth according to God’s definition of prosperity. Stuff will never bring peace; only Jesus can satisfy your soul. Pastor Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 21627 Eva St., Montgomery, TX 77356 (936) 597-5742 Service Times: Sundays 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30am Mondays 7:00pm

ou never know from where a good piece of advice might come. I recently received an email and I know it was just another pass along email, but it had some pretty good quotes. Some are funny, some a little deep, but they all have a certain something that makes simple sense. Maybe it hit me a little harder because it came form my father who, now looking back, helped guide me and make me who I am today. His words always carried with them some sort of impact on my life. Even though I may not have always agreed with them and, like many young adults, I did not let them sink into my head very far, I still remember many times working side by side with him, learning things from him, listening to what he had to say and admiring him for the way he lived his life. He always loved my mother and his family. I am sure there were times he struggled with life, but I never saw it. He was always solid and made my life as a child a great one. So, thanks dad for all you have ever done for me and thanks for this little gift of quotes. I hope those of you who read them can reflect back on them at one point or another and, even though they seem simple and maybe funny, use them to help in your own lives.
Reflections from the Seat of an Old Tractor • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Skunks and bankers - Keep them both at a distance. (I’d like to add politicians in there also) A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered. . . not yelled. Meanness don’t just happen overnight. Forgive your enemies; it messes with their heads. Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you. It does not take a very big person to carry a grudge. You cannot unsay a cruel word. Every path has a few puddles. When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty. The best sermons are lived, not preached. Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t going happen anyway. Don’t judge folks by their relatives. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. Live a good and honorable life, when you get older and think

back, you’ll enjoy it a second time. Don’t interfere with something that ain’t bothering you none. Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance. If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got. The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every morning. Always drink upstream from the herd. Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment. Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back in. If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around. Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and leave the rest to God.
