Green Clinches Third Timed Event Title Cowboy Utilizes 17 Years’ Experience in Championship to Better a Talented Field

ith a crack in his voice and tears in his eyes, Daniel Green talked to his wife, Shawnda, who was home in Oakdale, California. “We did it,” he said. “I love you so much. I miss you. I wish you were here to see this.” On Sunday afternoon, Green clinched his third Timed Event Championship title in the 17 years he’s been competing at this unique competition. He finished the rugged 25-run contest with a cumulative time of 313.6

seconds to claim the top prize. In all, he’ll leave the Lazy E Arena with $52,000. “Mission accomplished,” said Green, 40, who also won in 2002 and 2008. “It wasn’t perfect by any means. Many times it’s not, but that’s the Timed Event Championship. It’s adapt, adjust and overcome. It’s the guy that perseveres, and I just kept my mind set. These kids were coming in here and roping fast, and I just kept solid. I’ve been here enough

to know.” Green worked through the last of the five-round competition in 76.0 seconds, his slowest round of the weekend. But it secured the coveted title and the $50,000 top prize – he also added $2,000 for finishing eighth in the fastestround aspect of the contest. Green’s 313.6 was 30.3 seconds faster than the runner-up Paul David Tierney, the son of fourtime world champion Paul Tierney from Oral, South Dakota – the youngest of the three Tierneys in the mix earned $25,000. “It feels awesome to win that kind of money,” Paul David Tierney said, explaining that’s the largest check he’s received in competition. “That’ll make things a lot easier now.” The top timed-event cowboys

in rodeo are invited to compete in the challenge, which just concluded its 29th year. Each competes in all five disciplines, team roping-heading, team ropingheeling, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and steer roping. Over the course of the three days, contestants competed 25 times. Money is paid out in aggregate,

paying the cowboys with the top eight cumulative scores, and also in the fastest rounds. Trevor Brazile is the only sixtime winner in Timed Event Championship history. He placed third in this year’s event, earning $15,000 for that feat. But he also posted the fastest go-round, completed in 44.3 seconds during

the third performance to add another $10,000 to his wallet. “Usually if things are going good, I’m not trying to get that,” said Brazile, who has earned the top round prize six times in his career. “If things are going good, then I’m just being steady.” That was the key for Green. Not only did he claim his third LOOPS MAGAZINE • 7

title, he was one of three past champions to finish in the top four of this year’s event: Brazile in third, and five-time titlist K.C. Jones of Burlington, Wyoming, in fourth. “If I beat the course, then not all of them are going to beat me,” Green said. “I’ve never been beat by someone here if I feel like I

The Timed Event Championship is a true test of the top all-around cowboys in rodeo. Not only must they handle all five disciplines, but they must be able to handle any challenges. That includes being able to ride different horses throughout the competition. Early (round 3) in the five round event, Timed Event Championships first-timers Trell Etbauer of Goodwell, Oklahoma was number one in the Average with Dustin Bird of Cut Bank, Montana right behind him in the number two spot. The 17-time PRCA World Champion, Trevor Brazile posted the fastest go-round of this year’s event with a 44.3-second round. It was the second fastest go-round in the 29-year history of the Timed Event Championship, second only to his own record run of 43.5 seconds in 2006.

New-comer to the Timed Event Championships, Trell Etbauer was at one time leading the Average race. He slipped to 7th when the dust settled with a 25-head total of 364.8 seconds that yielded him $4,500 in cash.

His 4.0-second steer wrestling run, tied Clayton Hass for the fastest of this year’s event Two-time and reigning PRCA World Champion header Chad Masters is likely out of the competition for much of this season. Members of the Lazy E Sports medicine crew reported that he suffered a serious knee injury in round 2 in the steer wrestle event. 8 • APRIL 2013

to sit back and enjoy the February 23 event at the on site steak house and bar. Four saddles were awarded at the final day of the Rockin B USCRA roping at Sharber Arena in Oklahoma. The March 4 event handed out the grand prizes to Brian Zorger in the EE Roping, Freddy Vest in the 00 Roping, John Denny in the 00 Select Roping and Joseph Porter who took home the #1 Roping trophy saddle. Congratulations to all of these ropers and to everyone who competed and enjoyed the Rockin B Saddle series. One of the biggest ropings so far this season, the Spring Classic in Giddings, proved yet again to be a hotspot for ropers. Acting almost like

the official kickoff event for many ropers, the Spring Classic held at the LCSP Arena, once again welcomed a host of ropers in every division and paid out lots of cash, including $4,000 in added money. The event included lots action with the 3 full rounds and 2-short round format. Ropers had a chance to fill their pockets full of cash in each of the five rounds and the Average. The USCRA is off to a great start this season and ropers everywhere are the ones benefiting from the great payouts and fun of each USCRA event. So if you haven’t attended a USCRA event yet this season, get a move on and get in the middle of the excitement only the USCRA offers!

They hosted several events over the past month including the Tejas Championships in Bulverde, Texas, the Spring Classic in Giddings, Texas and wrapped up the Rocking B Saddle Series in Oklahoma. Each roping increases the money paid out already this year from the USCRA adding to the rankings of the USCRA World Championship race! The Tejas roping was a great event and ropers flocked to the event, hosted just outside San Antonio, for a chance to claim some of this year’s payout. Past champions, veterans and rookies filled the arena floor with lightning fast runs while trying to advance for the chance to win $50,000 in cash. RODEOHOUSTON veteran Clint Robinson said the good calf he had tonight helped him go home with the BP Super Series IV Tie-Down Roping title. “You’ve got to treat it like any other rodeo,” Robinson said. “There’s big money at the end, but you got to keep tying every calf down.”

Clint Robinson roped and wrapped his way to the top with a time of 7.8 seconds. To prepare to go out in the arena to win $50,000, he said he does nothing special. “I treat this no differently [than any other rodeo],” he said. “I’m going to go out the same as if I was going out to win only $1,000.”

The 2013 RodeoHouston BP Super Series Championship Fred Whitfield, of Hockley, Texas, knew the time he had to beat as he shot out of the box on his last run at the 2013 RODEOHOUSTON BP Super Series Tie-Down Roping Championship. Tying the calf in 7.8 seconds, the crowd went wild and Whitfield fed off their energy. PRCA News Courtesy of PRCA – ProRodeo ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee Paul Tierney has been honored by the Omaha World Herald as one of the 100 greatest athletes in Nebraska’s history. Tierney was recognized for a career that has lasted more than 40 years and produced a tie-down roping world championship in 1979, an all-around gold buckle in 1980 and 14 trips to the National Finals Rodeo. “Anytime you get recognized like that for achievements in life, it’s kind of like frosting on the cake,” Tierney told the SandHills Express of Broken Bow, Neb. “In high school I had become a state champion in all-around and calf roping. I realized in my college years that if I made the sacrifices and applied myself, I could do this.” Tierney was born in Kearney, Neb., and grew up in Broken Bow. He was ranked 95th by the World Herald, the only rodeo star on a list that was headed by St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson, Chicago Bears running back Gale Sayers and pitcher Grover Cleveland Alexander, who finished his career tied for third in career wins (373 for the Phillies, Cubs and Cardinals).

As the year progresses some teams seem to gel while others seem to disintegrate. This appears to directly relate to the attitude of the stars of the teams. If the star, or stars, are unselfish and have a good attitude, their team performed much better than those with stars who are self-

I’m not saying you can’t have a professional career if you ignore it, but you will be the most miserable person there is. If you have a bad attitude, I have some bad news for you. You will be miserable, no

matter what you do. Parents, if your kids have poor attitudes in the roping pen, find some chores for them. Chances are they are taking it for granted and not appreciating what they have. Roping has always been a blessing and any time I started looking at it like it was a job or doing it out of duty, I reminded myself I was the luckiest person in the world for getting to rope. There have been several times in my life where roping was taken away from me due to my health.

Thinking I might never get to rope again made me very appreciative. Remember, you are not limited by your level of talent. Attitude will always outperform talent. If you’re lacking a good attitude, take a few minutes and take stock of what you have to be grateful for. Counting your blessings is always a great exercise. Done often enough, you’ll be surprised how your attitude will change. Till next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

Fishing

n our world we have a lot of people writing books about how to be a better leader. It seems as though it may feed our ego more to be a leader than to be a follower. I heard somebody say that if you think you are leading and no one is following, you are merely taking a walk. While I don’t want to minimize the value of good leaders, it is also imperative that good leaders also know how to follow. Jesus made an interesting statement that was incredibly practical. He said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” It just so happened that He was talking to fishermen. I would submit to you that in order to be a good leader you must be, without fail, humble enough to allow anyone that could speak wisdom into your life to do so. Basically what Jesus was saying is that if you are a follower of mine, you will value people enough to be an instrument in leading them to Christ. The wording is interesting that He said “I will make you” with the emphasis on us allowing Him to give us His perspective on His value system. My experience in fishing is that you have to use different bait for different fish. It just so happens that the one thing that anybody and everybody in this world needs is someone to love them. Many have deceived themselves in

thinking that they don’t need anybody. The simple implication of following Christ is that we care enough about people to love them like God loves them. Since God loved you and me when we were unlovable, and continues to love us with all of our faults, He has also commanded us to love people in that same manner. The only way that will happen is if we follow close enough to God that we take on His characteristics and His attributes. The biggest challenge that you will ever have, should you choose to accept it, is to follow Jesus and to be a fisher for men.
