“I have been dealing with and feeding roping calves for 40 years and I have never seen a feed work as effectively and quickly as Precision Calf Feeds. No other feed compares. It keeps calves healthy. ”I train horses for a living, specializing in calf roping horses. . . so I keep lots of calves to work these horses on. I give roping lessons as well, so I need to keep my calves well in order to do my work. Precision Feed does it for me. Ernie Theriot Double E Farms Owner/Horse Trainer

Joe Beaver Jr. Superstar’s – A Blowout Event I
want to start by saying a big thanks to all my sponsors that help make my Jr. Superstar’s Roping on April 6-8, 2012 such a success. The 3rd annual roping held at the Wildfire Arena in Salado, Texas was up 70 entries (total of 442 entries) and paid out over $100,000 in winnings along with seven saddles, thirteen buckles and custom spurs. We ran over 2,200 runs over three days in the Wildfire Arena in Salado, Texas. Congrats to Marty Yates for winning grand champion ($1,000) and reserved champion ($500) in the First Annual Brody’s Shoot-Out of Champions.
The 2nd Joe Beaver Jr. Superstars is in the works for Stephenville, Texas for Labor Day Weekend 2012. It will be the same format as the roping in Salado with a couple changes in goats and reunion ropings. We hope the dates and location will work for all our loyal ropers. Also thanks to my crew that works my ropings so well and keeps things going so smoothly, I couldn’t do it without them. Keep an eye on my new campaign “Bold enough to wear Blue” it’s up and running. Peek Stands Out Josh Peek was wrestling when he heard he had won the allaround and tie-down roping titles at the April 12-15 Clark County Fair & Rodeo, but he wasn’t wrestling steers to the ground – he was roughhousing with his kids at home in Pueblo, Colo. Peek, who competed April 14 and returned home afterwards, tied for fifth in the second go of the tie-down roping with a time of 8.6 seconds and that was good enough to give him the average win with a time of 17.5 seconds on two head at the Wrangler Million Dollar Silver Tour event presented by Justin Boots. My first run was really fast,
and then my second run I got a calf that had already run once that day and the guy missed him, Peek said. “So I knew what kind of calf I had in the second round, and my horse was great and he helped me to the win. Peek earned $3,250 in the tiedown roping and with his steer wrestling money included, took home the all-around title with $5,745, beating out Trevor Brazile. Peek’s success so far this month – he also won the tiedown roping at Nacogdoches, Texas – has been partly due to a stroke of luck related to a change of horse. Peek’s 19-year-old steed, Cody, needed surgery to fix some bone spurs in his ankle and won’t be back until June – and that left Peek scrambling to find a suitable replacement.

he other day I had to go to Amarillo to the vet, get my horse shod, and do some other errands. My mom CRX’Dhappened to have a doctor appointment at the same time so we arranged our schedules to go together. That gave us two hours, each way, to visit and spend some time together. I won’t say I’m a favorite, but I am the last of five and the baby of the babies. So there’s not much I can do wrong in my mother’s eyes. When we get a chance to spend time one on one, it usually doesn’t take long for the conversation to get deep. However, I was more than surprised by what she had to say: “When you were about 17 and decided you wanted to rope, I’ve never seen anyone, in my lifetime, who was as committed and determined once you knew what you wanted. You weren’t going to accept anything but the best from yourself. You were working towards a world championship and weren’t like a kid anymore. Once you had that goal, you went at it like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Since winning the world in ’08, I know you’ve had surgeries and health problems, but you just haven’t roped the same. You’ve got the ranch, the cattle business, your bull business and all your other businesses. If you’re going to rope, you better make it your top priority and quit splitting time with all these other things.” Now I’m usually the one who’s always pumping everyone up and here my mom’s telling me if I’m going to do it, I better be all in. You can’t split a career in half and see how it works. It got me to thinking how I’ve been cheating myself. When you’re not healthy it’s easy to spend time doing other things. The fact is I’ve never had a “Plan B.” I’ve been asked over and
over what my plans were if roping didn’t work out. I’ve never given myself an out – I just don’t have a Plan B. One thing I can’t deal with is not performing to the best of my ability. That’s just not acceptable to me. My mom then said, “You’ve always been someone who had something to prove, more to yourself than anyone. Now you do have something to prove because everyone thinks you’re too old, too broke down, you work out too much. Now you have something to prove.” I’ve always been a student of the game and a fan of any success story. I like to hear how the athletic brain works and how to deal with pressure. I
wrote down a quote one day that said, ‘Some people go seminars, read books, or listen to tapes on how to be successful and how to win. Other people simply win.’ Not to say you can’t learn something, but the way I win is the way I win. What works for a pro basketball player may not work for me. That conversation with my mother means a lot, especially if you know our relationship. She was not calling me out – she was revving me up. She knows me and how I work. There’s no greater love for us than God, but a mother’s love is a close second. I’m sorrowful for people who don’t have that

ave you ever been on a horse that had a mind of its own and made the decision on it’s own to run away? A runaway horse is never a pleasant experience. As a child, I had a Shetland pony that knew how to run off and where to run off. He knew where the clothesline was and where the low tree limbs were. Do you have a mind of your own about serving the Lord? Or do you run off on your own? I have noticed after many years of riding that not everyone that puts on a pair of spurs knows how to use them. There are times when it is comical to see a roping horse bucking down the arena because the guy on top of him had inadvertently made the mistake of locking his spurs up in the horse’s flanks. When spurs are used in the right manner, the talent and usefulness of the horse can be exceptional. In Hebrews 10:24 we’re told how we can
relationship with their mother. I do and I’ve been blessed with a wife that has that special love and bond with our children. My dad’s advice is infrequent and important. He’s like E.F. Hutton – when he speaks, I’m listening. But for my mom to call me out, so to speak, was so unusual it caught me by surprise. The timing was perfect and exactly what I needed to hear. She more or less asked me, “Are you all in?” – Yes Mom, yes I am. If there’s anything you would like me to write about, please send me an email at strant@aol.com. Until next month, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.
“spur” one another on toward love and Godly tendencies. The reason we have the Word of God, the reason God wants us to go to a church that teaches the Word of God, the reason He loves to hear our prayers is because He knows that these “spurs” will bring out the very best in us. They’ll remove spiritual laziness and a mediocre attitude about serving the Lord. They’ll bring out the purpose for which we were designed. My prayer is that you let God “spur” you on. Let good people encourage you to be aggressive in your relationship with the God that created you. Until next time, let’s respond to the gentle nudging of God’s will for our lives. ~And let us consider how we can spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” Hebrews 10:34 Pastor Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 21627 Eva St. Montgomery, TX 77356 (936) 597-5742 Service Times: Sundays 8:30, 10:00 and 11:30am Mondays 7:00pm Livestream: Join our Sunday and first Wednesday services live at live.lonestar.tv or go to the Lone Star Cowboy Church Facebook page and click on the Livestream link.

PRO TIPS

PRACTICE WITH THE PROS PRO TIP NO. 2: Gound Work Flanking and Tying from the Chute Flanking and tying from the chute is a great way to practice your ground work, if it is done correctly. “One thing that a lot of people overlook is making sure that your rope length is correct. It should be around 19 feet long from the chute to the calf. This will make sure you learn the correct steps from your horse to the calf. Its not the same feel as coming off the horse, but this will allow you to learn to run with no momentum, then when you get a send off from your horse, it will be much quicker.” On your very first run always make sure that you don’t make any bobbles or mistakes. “Make
VSA
sure you run to the calf, or “Tuf Kaf,” collected with momentum that you would have from your dismount off your horse, this will make you that much faster in a real run.” You only get one run in a rodeo, and you want to have muscle memory of being smooth so you don’t make those mistakes in competition. When flanking and tying whether you’re using live calves or the “Tuf Kaf” always make sure to never short-cut so that you won’t create bad habits. The easiest bad habit to create is short-cutting your flank and string. Most of the time we want to hurry up and get to the tying part and forget about the other
IN HOUSE PROOF
parts of your run. But, I have learned from everyone I have worked with, that in order to have a good run you have to make every part of your run smooth to be fast. The best way to accomplish that is to concentrate on every step to ensure that everything is sharp and correct. With the Tuf Kaf your fully in control – it is a tool that allows you to emphasize and practice correct moves without resistance. Then you can practice with live cattle. One way to help yourself out of a bad habit of short-cutting is to flank and tie bigger calves, or the “Tuf Kaf.” This will make it harder for you to just spin a tie on. “The fastest way to overcome a bad habit is to CRX’D completely over emphasize everything that you do.” That way when you draw the best calf in the pen, whether it’s at a rodeo or a roping, you have practiced over emphasizing your whole run and that calf will be a lot easier to make a good run on and be smooth. Always remember that smooth is fast, you win your buckles in the practice pen and collect them at the rodeos. A
s I sit here this morning pondering on what to write this month, I am reflecting on the past weekend with my boys at the ball fields. Yep, it’s that time of year, Spring is here and with two boys in two different leagues this year, it looks like it is going to be a long Little League season. My oldest has moved up into the Minor Little League division while the other stayed in Rookies division. While helping coach both teams, I have found how hard it is for my oldest to move into a more competitive division. Most of the players on his team are first year Minor division players this year and they are all working hard to make the change and become better players. We have had a few games already and it is amazing to me how much they have already progressed. The first game of the season was a blowout with our team on the bottom side of things. I knew then it was going to be a tough year. Since that first game though, they have started becoming more and more competitive and have steadily improved. I watched them this past weekend sitting in the dugout and watching the
game. Sure there were a few clowning around moments, they are boys. For the most part, though, they were watching the game and I could almost see in everyone of their minds that they were learning more and teaching themselves how to be better players. Much like any other sport, winning is mostly mental. Athleticism plays a roll in it too, but learning the game and playing against stiffer competition has made them all improve. I am sure by the end of the season, we will be a team to be reckoned with. This made me think how competition plays a roll in any sport, including roping. If a guy only competes with the same caliber of ropers, he is not going to improve. Entering stiffer competition and watching and learning from those who rope better will help a roper improve. No one likes losing and if you put yourself in a place where you have to step it up in order to succeed, you will. On the other hand, my other son who is still in the Rookie division has a whole other aspect to reflect upon. His team has dominated the other teams they have faced so far this year. Most of the players on his team are past Rookie division players
and have the experience to play well in that division. Although they are doing well, I can see a chink in their armor. That is the ability to lose. Now, I already stated we hate to lose, but in some fashion it needs to happen. It is what a baseball team or a roper does after a loss that makes them true winners. No, I don’t mean congratulate those that beat you, that’s a given, but learning to lose and finding it deep inside yourself to respect that and learn and try harder in order for it not to happen again is the true meaning of being a winner. Don’t think Trevor Brazile never gets beat. I am sure he gets beat a lot, but he shrugs it off, and heads to the next rodeo leaving that bad memory behind and concentrating on what lies ahead. This is what separates winners from losers. I will keep you all posted on how the season continues and how my boys wrap things up this year in the next couple of months, but until then, trust yourself and your abilities to win, Make it a point to keep learning and trying to become better inside the arena, as well as in life. Until then - Good Luck and have a great month!
