Lewis Strikes Courtesy of PRCA – ProRodeo Monty Lewis was hoping for something to get his 2013 season rolling in the right direction, and he found it at the Clark County Fairgrounds. The 2004 tie-down roping world champion didn’t have a win or a big check cashed in the last few months, but the $5,207 haul from winning the Clark County Fair & Rodeo, a silver stop on the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour, presented by Justin Boots, changed all that. “The winter has been tough for me, and hopefully this will start me off to bigger things,” said Lewis, who won the average with a time of 18.5 seconds on two head. “I was hoping I’d win it because I’ve never really come close to winning at Logandale before, and this is probably the only major rodeo in April I hadn’t won in my career.” Lewis, of Hereford, Texas, tied down his first calf in 9.4 seconds, and then followed that with a 9.1-second effort in the second round to edge runner-up Paul David Tierney of Oral, S.D., by a .7 margin. “The calves were uneven and the start was tricky, but I had two calves that laid for me,” he said. “There was a lot of guessing in the start and I guessed right. Once you get the first one down quickly, it opens the door. But I do think you had to be lucky there this year to win it, because it was a tough competition.” Although his season wasn’t off to the best start, Lewis didn’t concern himself with the mini-drought he was facing, because he’s been in this situation before and still made a run to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “I’ve been going to all the big rodeos, but I don’t go crazy in the winter,” he said of his slow start. “The winter is a luck-fest and a lot of things need to break your way. I’m not too worried about it because I was in the same spot last year at this time and still had a great year. I’m looking forward to the rest of the month now.” Lewis also pointed out that not being in the top 50 in the world standings at this point in the season didn’t concern him, either. “Look, when things are going your way, rodeoing is easy, but when they aren’t, it gets pretty difficult at times,” Lewis said. “But as a guy who has had some success, it’s nice to remind yourself

that you can still win a big one. I just wanted a kick-start to this season and it sure looks like I got one.”

Erickson puts on recordbreaking show at RNCFR Courtesy of PRCA – ProRodeo Shane Erickson showed up at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo as a bit of an unknown quantity. That’s no longer the case. The Columbia River Circuit cowboy stood tall when the spotlight shined brightest and walked off with all-around honors, the team roping title (with Jade Corkill) and a prize money total of $25,502 that broke both the RNCFR allaround and overall records. It was nearly a $3,000 improvement on the overall record of $22,598, set by J.W. Harris in the 2009 bull riding competition. “It’s been a great week, kind of a dream come true, especially to win as much as I did,” said the soft-spoken, 32year-old Erickson. “A lot of people don’t really know me, so I wanted to do well here this week.” Erickson also earned third-place money in the tie-down roping while impressing fans and announcers with his skill and professionalism in both events. That didn’t change Erickson’s humble demeanor, though. “I had the best heeler in the world,” he said, “so I just had to do my job.” Corkill, the reigning world champion heeler, was competing at the RNCFR for the first time. It was also the first time he’d roped with Erickson, who was making his sixth RNCFR appearance. “Shane ropes really good, so I didn’t have to change anything,” Corkill said. “We improved each round – we had our best time in the semifinals (5.0 seconds) – and got to go last in the final round, which is a big advantage, especially when two guys missed in front of us.”

Billy Bob Brown Winning At College And Pro Levels Courtesy of PRCA – ProRodeo Billy Bob Brown is a busy man these days. The 21-year-old roper is working toward his degree in agriculture business

at Tarleton State University, competing at a high level on the school’s rodeo team and acting as college rodeo’s Student President of the Southwest Region. Oh, and he’s winning PRCA rodeos. Brown won the all-around and tiedown roping titles at the ABC ProRodeo in Lubbock, Texas, March 28-30, earning more than enough to fill his permit. He has a plan for his rodeo career, and it’s working out very well so far. “I have another year until I graduate, and I’m going to get my degree before I turn pro and get my PRCA card,” said the Carbon, Texas, native. “After I graduate I’m going to try to rodeo and go back to the ranch and run cows with my dad.” Brown’s run of 7.8 seconds was enough to edge Ryan Thibodeaux by .3 seconds and earn $1,972, nearly twice what he needed to fill his permit. However, Brown has designs on making his rookie push in 2014 after he has a diploma in his hand. “It was exciting to be able to win both the tie-down and all-around at a rodeo like this one; that was the biggest single check I’ve ever won,” he said. “My parents got to go with me and see me win, which was special.” Brown’s college teammate, Richie Champion, took second in the bareback riding in Lubbock. It isn’t an unusual occurrence to see the college kids from Stephenville, Texas, doing well in PRCA rodeos. “It’s nice to see that we can win at the college level, but we can also step up and win or place really high at the pro level,” said Brown, who currently leads the allaround, team roping header and tie-down roping standings in the Southwest Region. “I always like to see my college teammates getting it done at the highest level.” Coming out of high school, Brown was an accomplished basketball player, garnering scholarship offers from Division II schools to shoot hoops instead of throwing loops. He says as much as he loved basketball, it was never his dream like rodeoing was. “I worked at rodeo my whole life growing up and it’s always been my dream,” he said. “You need to have a different kind of work ethic for rodeo than other sports. Doing multiple events, you have to be so dedicated, and I love that part of it. I want to win all-around world titles.” LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5

n the busy world of today, it’s easy to find yourself with your head down and living as fast as you can. Though our hectic lives and schedules are self-designed, I believe it’s important to be still and quiet at times. God communicates with us in many ways and I don’t want to miss out on that. When I was younger I felt like God needed me to accomplish his mission. I thought I needed to give God the glory and public recognition first and foremost whenever I won. With maturity

I’ve realized that while it’s never eighteen-year-old stopped at an bad to give God the glory, I now accident to help. While doing so, know He will accomplish his a car slid into him and knocked mission with or without me. If I’m him over a 20' bridge. too busy, or not attentive enough At first they thought he to recognize when He needs me, wouldn’t live. After surviving, He will find someone else. they told him he probably I always thought I was a wouldn’t walk again because one of his legs was nearly ruined. He blessing to God by doing these definitely would not be able to things and helping people. In rope again. This was his reward reality I was receiving the blessing. for being a good Samaritan and Several years ago I was in an CR VSA IN HOUSE PROOF CRX’D he was going through a airport and received a phone call depression. They told me he was from a stranger asking me to call a a big fan of mine and asked if I young man that had been in an could I take a minute or two to accident. This young, healthy,

give him a call. As soon as we hung up, I called him and we talked for ten or fifteen minutes. I prayed for him and told him as soon as he was able to rope he could attend one of my schools on me. He’d been told he may not walk again and I’m telling him to come to my school. I was told that conversation turned everything around for him. He’s now going to college. I’ve had

him at a school and got to visit with him in Vegas. He’s a great example to people of not losing hope. I’m certain I got more out of it than he did. I was presented with an opportunity to reach out to someone in need. If I had been too busy, it would have been easy to send him a text telling him I was praying for him. However, I doubt it would have had the same affect.

TRUST ME. I have missed more opportunities than I have taken advantage of, but this time by being a blessing, I received the greatest blessing myself. If we’re willing, God will use you. If not, he’ll find someone else who is. I, myself, don’t want to miss a chance to be a blessing and receive His blessings. Till next, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

You Don't Know Me

T

here is a song by Simply Red that says: “If you don’t know me by now, you will never, never, never know me.” Jesus asked the question several times in John’s Gospel, “Do you know me?” 1 John 2:4-5 says, “He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word; truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.” Many people think that just because there is a God, and that God is so merciful, that we can live however we choose and still go to Heaven. The truth is that the demons even believe there is a God and they’re not going to heaven. Many want just to have an intellectual pursuit of God on their terms - that is not “knowing God.” He who says, “I know Him” and does not keep his commandments is a liar. The question I have for you today is do you know what God’s commandments are first of all? Secondly, do you follow His commandments? Our own children teach the harsh reality of human nature to us. Have you ever wondered why your children don’t obey you? The truth is that they love themselves more than they love you. Strong words, huh? The same principle applies in our relationship with God. The reason for disobedience is that we love ourselves more than we love our God. Just accumulating facts about something in and of itself does not change you or spur you on. It must go beyond knowledge and also beyond words. As the old

saying goes, “Talk is cheap.” Practice not only applies to sporting events and rodeos, it also applies to following Christ. It’s been said that practice makes perfect. Hopefully, we all know by now that those words are not true. We can practice wrong for the rest of our life and never grow or mature. Perfect practice makes perfect. The love we experience towards Jesus is a love that we continuously grow and develop only as we continue to be obedient to Him. The only way you will know God is by spending time in His word. As well as through prayer and spending quality time with individuals that have the same core values of being obedient to God. The way we know God is by keeping His word and letting the love of God be perfected perpetually by Him. T

his month’s installment comes to you after a bad week for America. The bombing in Boston and the devastating explosion in Texas rocked the country. A day or so after the Boston ordeal, I looked at my Facebook page and found an article a friend of mine wrote. I read through it and realized he hit it dead on. At the beginning of the article, he explained that he was not sure why people do these kind of acts and why people seem to have so much hatred toward the United States. In the end though, I believe he captured it and answered his own question. Below is his paragraph that in my opinion nailed it! “You see, those cowardly bastards also known as ‘terrorists’ placed those bombs at the finish line fully believing that after 26.2 miles and literally

hours of physical, mental and emotional torture, they would find their victims more than willing to lie down and succumb to the terror they hoped to inflict. They believed that we were finished… They were wrong! Within seconds after those bombs exploded men and women of all ages, creeds and colors, all the while being physically drained from the grueling journey and wearing their running shoes and skimpy shorts, ran not away from, but rather straight towards the scene of the blasts. Others, wearing yellow volunteer jackets who arrived that morning expecting to hand out water and power bars to participants, ran not away, but rather straight towards total strangers, becoming another type of participant willing to do whatever was necessary to help their fellow man.

Hundreds of people who arrived as spectators left as willing participants and indelible examples of the strength and resolve of the “human spirit.” Those whose job it is to run towards and not away, ran towards the smoke and rubble not because it was their job rather because it is their calling. All of the training and preparation in the world is useless unless those we entrust our lives and our safety to are willing to forgo their own safety in order to restore order amidst a planned and perpetrated act of terror.” My friend followed that paragraph with this; “They hate us not because of what we have ‘around’ us, rather they hate us because of what we have ‘inside’ of us. They hate us because when things are at their worst, we are at our best. They hate us because when they expect us to quit, we find the strength to fight back.” I could not have said it better. Thanks Mark. Until Next Time – Good Luck! Ryan Davis

$1,275 plus shipping Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.
