27th Annual Barry Burk Championship Jr. Roping Roundup Hardy Murphy Coliseum and Fairgrounds Ardmore, Oklahoma May 25-28, 2012

12 & Under Breakaway Roping (76 entries) Jay, Okahoma cowboy, Brenten Hall was all smiles as he received his Championship Trophy Saddle for a good job of breakaway roping. He won the short go with a 2.71 and captured first in the Average with a time of 14.52. The fastest time Trophy Rope Can went to Garrett Chick, Salado, Texas with his 2.70 in the 3rd go round.

safe and fun for these future champions. Mike and Jerry Gandy, Ringling, Oklahoma, can be thanked for bringing these super little calves. As in the past, Glen Robinson, from Mississippi, brought a super set of fresh calves for the older divisions. Not to be overlooked was the super set of fresh calves brought by Jeff Yates, from Texas, for the Alumni Roping. Roping good quality cattle is always a priority for Barry Burk as he produces the Roping Roundup. Sunday morning is always the time in the Roundup for Cowboy Church. This year the service was blessed to have Carter Edmondson, McCaulley, Texas as the speaker. As a past contestant at the Roping Roundup, it was special to have Carter come to tell how his life has been touched by the love of Jesus and the call now on him to share the Gospel. Music was furnished by the talented Christy McGuire, mother of Roundup contestant, Ross McGuire of Webbers Falls, Oklahoma. The Roping Roundup is fortunate to have a great set of sponsors who provide the awards and finances that make this event possible for the young calf ropers. Thank you goes out to Wrangler, Choctaw Nation, Cinderella Roping Horses, Joplin Regional Stockyards, Bailey Motors, Brooks/Maberry, Inc. new perimeter fence and entrance greeted the contestants and their families at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum and Fairgrounds in Ardmore, Oklahoma as they arrived for the 27th Annual BB Championship Jr. Calf Roping Roundup. The placement of the new entrance will be an improvement for the facility in the future, but this year it caused a little confusion. The beautiful new rock and iron fence surrounding the Fairgrounds and the new rock entrance designed for ease of entry for horse trailers is a much needed update to the facility. The BB Championship Jr. Calf Roping Roundup had a total of 509 entries and paid out over $52,000 to the youth ropers who came from all over the nation to compete in the six divisions of calf roping. Each of the division champions also received a beautiful trophy saddle and other prizes for their good work. This year as an added attraction, an alumni tiedown roping was featured on Saturday night. With only limited advertisement, the event hosted 55 ropers who divided a purse of $21,500, which included the $5,000 added money. It was quite a treat for the junior roping contestants to watch these older ropers, most of whom are now among the top PRCA calf ropers, including six world champions, compete and also have the opportunity to get autographs or just be in the same arena with some of their idols. After two go rounds and short round, the winner of the Alumni Roping Championship was Louisiana calf roper, Ryan Thibodeaux. Go round winners were Jake Cooper, round one; Cody Ohl, round two; and Adam Gray, short round. It appears the Alumni Roping will be on the schedule for future Roping Roundups. few months ago when I asked my Facebook fans for article ideas, I was overwhelmed with the requests for nutrition and fitness tips. If CRX’D you are anything like me, I like to formulate a plan, before I go into something. I want to get the full benefit from my training. I think it is very important that everyone in a family buys into the system as a team. That being said, I have two little boys, 6 and 8, and a baby girl. I don’t think it would be fair to expect the same from them, as I do myself. What I try to do with them, as in other areas of their lives, is to encourage them to make wise choices. Just as they are learning to read and write in school, they also need to learn to live healthy lifestyles. So many people ask me what foods I eat to stay healthy. I try to keep it as simple as possible. No white Starches No Sugar No Fried Foods No Dairy Now that being said, when I am on the road and traveling all over United States and Canada, I have found that there are 3 keys to this… Being prepared We always try to have food packed and even prepared ahead of time, so we are never stuck without options. Make the best choice available Often times when I fly somewhere I pack some food and protein. But you can always find something to eat, even at McDonald’s. If all else fails, go bunless. You may just have to pay a little more to fill up. Never let yourself get too hungry It is better to eat something that is not the best choice, than to not eat at all. I have learned

this the hard way. You must have fuel to compete, and be at the top of your game. I try to eat anywhere from 4 to 6 meals a day. You can ruin your metabolism by skipping meals. Most people choose to skip

meals when they are trying to lose weight. Your body is forced to eat up muscle first, and store fat in a survival instinct, defeating the purpose. Have you noticed that I have not used the word “diet” at all

The Devil Wears Prada

Y

ou may be asking yourself what is Prada? Prada is a high-class Italian fashion company known for its original designs. There was a movie entitled “The Devil Wears Prada” that you may have seen. When I went to the website for Prada they had this video of young GQ-looking men playing guitars. As I watched the video I realized they said absolutely nothing about their clothing products. The reason I believe is because they are selling an image and if they can sell the image they are promoting, then they can sell their product. 2 Corinthians 11:14 says, “Satan himself masquerades as an Angel of Light.” When we all think of Satan we think of this red-faced horned man with a pitchfork. Nobody is going to buy anything from him. However, as Satan masquerades he sells an image. In advertising they say the packaging of a product is everything. No one that I know would buy cigarettes from a scrawny old guy in the hospital who had just come out of open-heart surgery. No, what we do is we buy cigarettes from the Marlboro man who sells an image of authenticity and the cowboy way. People are more apt to purchase alcohol from a friendly bartender than an alcoholic bum who is passed out on the street. Satan masquerades himself in ways that he knows will be successful in seducing us. Satan tries to sell us the products that most reflect what people really want in life acceptance, manliness for men, attractiveness for women, pleasure, success, achievement and the list goes on.

in this entry? That is because the first three letters in the word “diet” spell “die.” That is exactly opposite of what we are trying to do, and that is to live to our full potential. We must eat to live, not live to eat.

I’ve always wanted to preach a sermon entitled “What I Would Do If I Was God.” If I was God, I could snap my fingers and give you a brand new Dodge dually pick up truck. If you wanted a house with an indoor roping arena, I could do that as well. I would be the most popular man in the land if I could only become God. But of course, I’d have to get God off the throne FIRST. There’s no room on His throne for two. Now of course we all know that’s not going to happen. Satan tried it once; it didn’t work out real well for him. Satan’s message is: To become great, you’ve got to be God. You’ve got to CENTER on YOURSELF. You’ve got to meet YOUR needs. You’ve got to lift YOURSELF UP. Jesus said if you want to be great, you must learn to serve. Satan’s product: YOU as God of your life. You may not be aware of it, but just as God has chosen to work through man, Satan also works through people we know and trust. If he can surround us with enough people who tell us that wrong is right, that evil is better than good, and that God either isn’t there or doesn’t care, then eventually we begin to listen even though we know they’re wrong. The scripture says, “My people die from a lack of knowledge.” My question for you today is, do you know who your enemy is? Do you really know who your God is? “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33, NIV). L

ike I promised, I would let you know how this spring’s Little League baseball season went for my two oldest boys. The season was long and I have to be honest, the drama of the year was almost too much. My oldest son who moved into the Minor league this year had a tough battle. The players on his team, like himself were all young and the other coaches and myself were new to the league and looking back, we made some rookie mistakes. As the season wore on, the boys on his team all gained knowledge and became a pretty good team. Although we did not go very far in the season-ending tournament, they played hard and the coaches and I were very proud of them all. My second oldest son’s team in the Rookie division had a great team; Almost too good at the beginning of the season. I say that because they dominated everyone they went up against. The coaches were great and competitive. This created two problems for his team. Other teams thought we were too competitive,

and the team never really improved. Like the old saying, you are only as good as your competition proved true. Other teams did improved and the last game of the season brought what I had expected early on, a loss to our team. The end of season tournament found the team as us coaches trying to rebound. As it turned out, the championship game came down to our team facing the team that beat us. It was a tough game. In the end, due to what I believe was a good move from our team that backfired due to unclear rules, they lost the championship. What I learned over the course of this season is that no matter where my boys found themselves, they enjoyed playing and learning the game of baseball and I believe they both learned more by loosing then they did by winning. In all, my youngest son in the Rookie division learned to did deep when it counted not only for himself, but for his team. He finished the season with his head held high because he never quit trying and never quite learning. My

oldest son learned that even though things seem to be stacked against him and his team, to never quit. If they worked harder and work together they became better as a team. It took each individual to work on what they needed to, to become better as a team. Although it was just a baseball season, my boys learned lifelong lessons they will use for the rest of their lives. One learned that he should never hang his head and that hard work pays off when you know you gave it everything you have. My other son learned that not many people succeed by themselves. It takes teamwork and the knowledge and persistence from many people to accomplish something. These are lessons that even as adults we live each day. Weather it is at our jobs, school, W CH VSA hard IN work HOUSEpays PROOF home or P/U in the arena, off. You may not win it all, but the knowledge that you gave it all you could carries a lot of weight and when you finally do win, it will that much sweeter. Until next time - Best of luck. Ryan
