Cooper’s Father’s Day Title a Joy For Four Generations It was a happy Father’s Day indeed for Clint Cooper. The 31year-old tie-down roper, and father of two, collected a large sum of money during his weekend travels, highlighted by a check for $6,303 after winning the 53rd Annual Daines Ranch Rodeo in Innisfail, Alberta. Cooper was able to call both his father – the legendary Roy “Super Looper” Cooper – as well as his grandfather (Tuffy) with the good news after his 7.1second run held up for the win. “My grandpa told me he wanted me to call him and he hoped I’d be telling him I won, so he was very happy when I called him,” said Cooper, who also shared a few moments on the phone with his dad. “The first thing I told my dad was ‘Happy Father’s Day,’ and then he wanted to know how I had done. He was also very happy.” Riding traveling partner Trent Creager’s horse, Cooper outlooped stepbrother-in-law Trevor Brazile by the smallest of margins for the victory. His 7.1 just edged Brazile’s 7.2 for the one-head win. “It was a quick calf roping; a bunch of guys were right behind us at 7.3 and 7.4,” Cooper said. “It was a really tough rodeo to win, but I thought the conditions were great.” The good fortune didn’t stop in Innisfail. While he did most of his damage north of the border, Cooper also won $1,564 by placing third in a round and fourth in the average in North Platte, Nebraska. The almost $8,000 he earned at the two rodeos will go a long
way toward getting him back into the tie-down roping mix as the summer run kicks off. After missing the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2012, he’s determined not to make it a twoyear drought and he’s up to 25th in the June 17 world standings. “This was real important to me because that’s a good amount of money to take home and it gives me more confidence,” the four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier said. “It was a good overall Father’s Day weekend for me. “I’m going to hit the road really hard starting now. I’ve only been to 16 rodeos, but we’re entered at a lot for the Fourth of July weekend and hopefully it’ll be a good Cowboy Christmas for me as well.” The other champions in this $236,529 rodeo were bareback rider Steven Dent (89 points), steer wrestler Tanner Milan (4.1 seconds), team ropers Levi Simpson and John Robertson (3.9 seconds), saddle bronc rider Chet Johnson (87.5 points), bull rider Tanner Girletz (88.5 points) and barrel racer Lisa Lockhart (15.611 seconds).
Davis’ 93 in Weatherford Tops Elite Field Take a look at any of the ProBullStats.com metrics – for riding percentage, highly scored rides or overall efficiency – and rookie Cooper Davis comes out among the leaders on all counts. Still, what three-time World Champion J.W. Harris sees as the kid’s biggest strength can’t be measured with numbers. It’s not a tangible thing. Nobody’s found a way to quantify desire. “Cooper just tries hard,” Harris said. “He keeps his hand closed. If you try as hard as him and you have a little bit of talent you can
have great success. It’s kind of hard to put into words … ‘try’ makes up for a lot, but you have to have talent, too. A lot of guys who try hard can’t get it done. Cooper will do whatever he needs to do to get it done. I just know he’s traveling with a good guy in Clayton Foltyn, who’s always been that way: You never quit. He has the model right there for how to do things right. (Among the younger guys) Chandler Bownds might be a more gifted bull rider, but Cooper is always going to be a factor because he tries so hard.” It’s a lesson worth jotting down after Davis’ big win at the June 12 Parker County Frontier Days & PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford, Texas. Davis had a career-best score of 93 points (his ninth ride of 90 points or better), on Carr Pro Rodeo’s Generalissimo to beat Bownds by two points. Harris and Shawn Hogg tied for third with 89 points each. With reigning World Champion Cody Teel (he tied for eighth) and a sprinkling of other Wrangler National Finals Rodeo veterans on hand like Trevor Kastner and Tate Stratton, it definitely rates among the best moments of the 19-year-old’s ascending PRCA career. The other champions at this $108,670 rodeo were bareback riders Jared Smith and Luke Creasy (88 points each), steer wrestler Sterling Wallace (4.0 seconds), team ropers Andrew Ward/Reagan Ward and Nick Sartain/Rich Skelton (4.6 seconds each), saddle bronc rider Jacobs Crawley (86 points), tie-down roper Adam Gray (7.4 seconds), steer roper J. Tom Fisher (34.2 on three head) and barrel racer Lizzy Ehr (17.35 seconds). With checks in both team roping and steer roping, JoJo LeMond was the allaround champion ($3,168). LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5
28th Annual Barry Burk
T
here was no problem getting through the gates this year for the 28th Annual BB Championship Jr. Roping Roundup. All the new perimeter fence at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum and Fairgrounds in Ardmore, Oklahoma has been completed. The beautiful new rock and iron fence surrounding the fairgrounds made it easy to get in and that is just what happened as ropers rolled in for the annual event. The BB Championship Jr. Calf Roping Roundup had a total of 463 entries this year, and paid out over $52,000 to the ropers, in cash and prizes. Calf ropers came from all over the nation to compete in the seven divisions of calf roping. Each of the junior division champions also received beautiful trophy saddles and other prizes for their hard work. This year the alumni tiedown roping was again featured on Saturday night. The competition was a crowd pleaser and when all the times were added up Cory Solomon, PRCA NFR Quilifier was the winner of the average. “What an exciting alumni roping. I remember years ago when Cory first came to this roping, he was just about five years old riding his pony.” Says Cheryl Burk. “It was just wonderful to see Cory win the roping this year.” The alumni roping event hosted 54 ropers and it was quite a treat for the junior roping contestants to watch these alumni ropers, most of whom are now among some of the top PRCA calf ropers in the nation. A great pen of calves were assembled for the 12 & Under, these calves were sorted to make sure the event was safe and fun for these future champions. Mark Holder, can be thanked for bringing these super little calves. As in the past, Glen Robinson, from Mississippi, brought a super set of fresh calves for the remainder of the divisions. Making sure the calves are as even as possible and good quality is always a priority for Burk Roping Productions. 6 • JULY 2013
Sunday morning is always the time in the Roundup for Cowboy Church. This year the service was blessed again to have Carter Edmondson from McCaulley, Texas as the speaker. As a past contestant at the Roping Roundup, it was special to have Carter come and share the Gospel. The Roping Roundup is fortunate to have such great sponsors. Every year they provide the awards and finances to make it possible to have an event of this caliber for young calf ropers. A big thank you goes out to Wrangler, Choctaw Nation, Joplin Regional Stockyards, Bailey Motors, Maberry Inc, Jud Little Ranch, Fastback Ropes, Justin Boots, Justin Discount Boots & Cowboy Outfitters, Bluebonnet Feeds, Resistol, Durant Stockyards, Texas Star Bank, American Junior Rodeo Association, Star H Ranches, Thomas Tools, TP Farms, Texoma Cardiovascular Surgeons, Priefert Rodeo Equipment, WW Livestock Systems, Jordan Stockyards, Shamrock Bank, Webb Ropes, Ardmore Tourism Authority, Quality Inn & Rodeway Inn.

Opportunities
L
ately a popular topic when talking with my nephews is opportunities and what to do with them. Seizing and not missing opportunities has always been important to me and has made a difference in my roping. My nephews have learned to take advantage of opportunities presented to them and have had the opportunity to learn how to win and to practice

I’m pretty This was the one, out of six or tickled about this and want seven, where our registered to make it as fun for them as cows and bull are. This bull was I can. CR VSA IN HOUSE PROOF CRX’D very expensive because even The other day I had told the though these cows are boys we would rope the
artificially inseminated, they don’t all take and he ensures we will have top quality calves. I couldn’t chance having my neighbor’s bull on these registered cows. It would have been easy to tell my boys that we just couldn’t rope that night because I had to fix fence. It’s not life or death for them and they would have been fine with it. But, I
would have missed the opportunity, as their dad, of having fun roping with them. I think it’s my job as their dad to make things enjoyable. So, when I found the fence down, I thought, “No, not today. I’m not missing out on tonight with my kids.” So I hustled, got the fence fixed and we still got to rope and have a good time. One of the things I’ve been
talking about with my nephews is getting the most out of every opportunity. That has always been one of my strengths. When things don’t go your way, there’s an opportunity to learn, change or grow. The hard part is seeing those circumstances as the P/U W CH VSA IN HOUSE PROOF opportunities they are. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

Distractions
A
while back, I took a young horse to a roping. He had never really been anywhere prior to that time. There were banners on the fence and when I would ride him past the banner, he would always shy away and jump back from it. I rode him up close to the banner and began to shake it in an effort to get him accustomed to the sights and the sounds that could have continued to distract him from his real mission – to be the best calf roping horse to show up that day! In life, we are daily bombarded by distractions that can keep us from the destiny and the purpose that God created us for. I would like to give you five reasons why people fail to reach their destiny. Perhaps as you read these reasons, they will speak volumes to you and give you the direction that we all desperately need in order to overcome the distractions that keep us from our destiny. First, some people get tired of growing and changing and stop before they arrive at their destination. We are not judged based on how we compare with someone else – whether we’ve done more or less, but on whether we finish the race. In God’s kingdom, everyone who finishes the race wins! Second, some people try to keep relationships with people
who are not seeking God’s purpose and destiny for their lives. We need to hang out with people who want to serve the Lord and will encourage us to do the same. Third, some try to do their own thing to reach their destiny with the energy of their flesh and fail to depend on God for strength. Fourth, some fail hard tests along the way. God has a way of repeating the same test until we pass it and some of us take the same test for 30 – 40 years! Fifth, some never take the first step! Following Christ always requires a step of faith and we will never find our destiny if we fail to take that first step. My challenge to you is to keep your eyes on Jesus – that’s where the answer is! PRACTICE WITH THE PROS
Practice Pen Pro Tips Online Training Tool Roping Machines CONGRATULATIONS! CONGRATULATIONS! By now, most of you younger ropers in Junior High and High School have finished your state rodeo finals and some of you are heading to the Nationals. Be sure and congratulate your parents and yourself for your own achievements. If you made it this far, you have worked very hard to improve your game this season. Keep up the hard work “practicing to win” and good luck to everyone. I was one of the fortunate ones, I finished the Wyoming High School Rodeo finals; Won the AllAround Saddle (Calf Roping, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping). I also won the Year End Calf Roping Saddle. I made it to High School Nationals in Calf Roping and Steer Wrestling. I also made nationals in Calf Roping and Team Roping at the NLBRA Finals. I practiced on the Tuf Kaf Training
System and had only a couple of live calves. It kept me and my horsed tuned up all year. Practice at doing the simple things until they come natural to you. The more you work at the simple things, the smoother you will become and the quicker they will happen. Keep doing the fundamentals and you will improve every time you go to the roping pen. There’s no magic, shortcuts or secrets. There are only fundamentals, discipline and hard work. Good Luck and Remember “Practice to Win!” Come see us at the NHSRA and NLBRA Booth! $1,275 plus shipping Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.
