have never jumped out of an airplane. There may have been times I’ve wanted to but it isn’t actually one of my goals. I have gone soaring in a glider with a friend and the experience was awesome. I have watched people parachute and when I see them free fall I’m amazed at how they can be flying toward the ground, at who knows what speed, and not be afraid. Weightlessness for astronauts must be amazing; zero gravity; no pull, no pressure, no weight on your shoulders. Perhaps, that is where the thrill of free falling comes into play. I’m sure it gives you a rush like you cannot describe. Talk about an adrenalin flow, I cannot even imagine. To be able to float, flip, soar and spin with no effort at all must be exhilarating. I think we all hunger for a carefree life with no weight on our shoulders, no pressure, no pain, no struggle and no limiting circumstances. As ropers we all work hard to discipline ourselves to do what needs to be done to win. Many of us know the struggles of victory and the agony of defeat. I don’t know how many of you remember boxer Muhammad Ali. His chant was, “Float like a butterfly; sting like a bee.” He was an amazing fighter and he did, indeed, float on the canvas with light easy steps and tagged you when you least expected it. He loved boxing, he was good at it and he made it seem like fun. He was arrogant, but he had a right to be. He knew what he was doing and he worked hard to utilize his talent. Roping should be like that. We should take our eyes off the ground and look up. We all need the buoyancy to float, flip and soar. We all need to work toward that zero gravity, that non-gravitational pull of the world’s weight. Have you ever been in a position to watch an eagle soar? They float on the air currents with almost no effort at all. The eagle has speed, strength, power and courage and with that comes the buoyancy to fly at zero gravity, floating on each rising air current. Does that mean it is carefree? Does that mean it has no worries? No, not at all. What it does mean is the eagle is very good at what it does. When you work at being very good at what you do, things seem easier. It is a greater accomplishment to shine in your chosen endeavor. It is easier to flip, glide and soar if you know what you are doing, and why, or know where you are going and the reasons behind it.

AUGUST 2011 There is no greater feeling than seeing your efforts in the practice pen pay off. When I interview ropers many of them talk about how much they practice, how hard they work to make a winning run pay off. When we embrace challenges God teaches us to fly. Did you know a mother eagle actually pushes her young out of the nest when the time is right so they “have to fly?” I remember one time my mom telling me that her dad learned to swim when his dad threw him in a horse tank and told him, “Sink or swim.” It is amazing what we can do when the challenge is forced upon us. Scary thought, huh? When we move out of our comfort zone God teaches us to soar. Zero gravity, weightlessness, floating like a butterfly all become realities for us when we stop looking at the ground and look up. Sometimes, we have to free fall for awhile to gain our courage and perspective and improve our perception. Of course, it is scary and unnerving. We do not like not knowing what is going to happen and being able to prepare for it. The most anyone can do is take what you have to work with and put it to good use. When you do all you can do with all you have that is all anyone can do. We all have talents, things we are good at. We have intent and purpose. There is a reason for what we do and why. There is purpose behind everything we face in life. We may never know what it is or why, but there is intent and meaning. You may be asking yourself what is the point. Why am I going through this? Where am I headed? What do I expect to gain or get out of it? We all have questions that we cannot answer and we all have 20/20 hindsight. That is where the free fall comes in. We feel like we are plunging toward the ground at two hundred miles per hour and at any moment we are going to crash, but if we have faith in ourselves and in God, that is not what happens. Float like a butterfly, fly like an eagle, forget that zero gravity thing. Take your eyes off the ground and look up. Learn to float, flip and soar across the heavens! Start making a difference. Take your eyes off your circumstances and utilize all your talents. You have to make a stand to make a difference. Face the challenge not only for yourself but for others as well and that is just the way it is…..

ANNOUNCEMENTS SHOOT-OUT FUND UPDATE August is upon us and its the month for USTRC Regional Finals. The Regional Finals are one of the best places to get USTRC Flex Earnings. There is $1.4 million in USTRC Flex Earnings awarded at each Regional Finals event. With six of these awesome events still to go, it is time to make plans to get to the next one. The USTRC National Finals Shoot-Out Fund is currently at $680,000, so that means it is time to secure your spot to compete at the USTRC National Finals of Team Roping. Don’t hesitate, get your business in order so you won’t be left out of the biggest and best team roping event in the world. It is the place to be if you are a team roper and you certainly want to have as many Shoot-Out opportunities as possible. The event will take place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma October 22-30, 2011 and will be nine days full of everything team roping. With that said, it is crucial for you to get to the next USTRC Regional Finals event and load up on USTRC Flex Earnings. Rope up and we will see you at the next USTRC event. The USTRC National Finals is just around the corner, so don’t hesitate, load the horses and the kids and get to the next roping.

NFTR At the NFTR in October, the Cruel Girl Championship and the Century Championship are Specialty ropings. Any female that is a current USTRC member may enter the Cruel Girl Championship roping, no qualification is required. And in the Century Championships, any current USTRC member that is 50 years old during 2011, may enter, no qualification required. Both divisions are #11 with #9 Incentive.

Regional Finals It’s Regional Finals time! Please check your Available Earnings by going to www.ustrc.com. The “Member” link on the home page will take you to your personal file page. Click on the “Your Earnings” link once you’re signed in. Remember eligibility to enter a Shoot-Out Division requires participation at a 2011 USTRC Event. Every current member has been awarded Flex Earnings ($1,000 to Gold Spur members and $3,000 to Gold Plus members) that can be used to qualify for a Regional Shoot-Out position. It takes $2,000 in earnings to qualify, so combine your earnings with another member and you’re in! Of course, you may also qualify by placing 1st through 5th in the Average at any USTRC sanctioned event. Be sure to check out your Available Earnings at www.ustrc.com or call 254.968.0002 ext. 5103 should you need more information. Ropers will be allowed to Draw-In to the preliminary divisions (#15, #13, #12, #11, #10, #9, #8 and the Gold Plus) at the Regional Finals events. Partners will be drawn on site at the event. At the Regional Finals events the Draw-In Option is an enter on site only. If you pre enter as a draw, please check with the roping office on site to make sure your draw entry is processed before the books are closed. The Draw-In option won’t be available for any Shoot-Out Division. To learn more about the Draw-In Option see the chart in the back of SuperLooper Magazine in the Format Section.

#12 Division In the even-numbered #8 and #10 divisions, the top entry combinations were the like numbered 4-4 and 5-5 combinations. Here in the #12 division, we find our first divergence from that pattern with the top combination being the 5-7 followed by the 6-6. The higher numbered heeler bias continues to apply. Understanding that teams with a combination total closest to the maximum stand the best chance at winning, only three combinations in the Top Ten are less than 12, the 5-6, the 5-6.5 and the 6-5. The only two combinations with header numbers exceeding heeler are the last two in the Top Ten, the 6.5-6 and the 6-5. You will also notice that similar to the #11 Division, 24% of the combinations, as opposed to 25.9% in the #11, were in the Other category. Checking to see how well the combinations did in the Average, the top three in Entries were also the top three in Average Winners and in the same order â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 5-7, 6-6, and 5 - 7.5. In addition, the percentages of each of those combinations in both categories, Entries and Average Winners, were nearly the same although all three combinations were slightly better on the Average Winners list. The #12 Division, then, is the division that has come nearest so far to matching the percentage of Entries with Average Winners. Can we assume that #12 ropers have a little more moxie when it comes to figuring out the best combinations for entering and winning? I think that remains 12 / AUGUST 2011

to be seen. You may also notice by looking at the #12 Chart, every single combination in the Top Ten but two had better winning percentages than entry percentages. The reason is because the “Other” category did

so poorly. With 24% of the Entries, “Other” accounted for a paltry 6.3% of the Average Wins. Look at the huge difference between the red and blue bars in the “Other” column. The two combinations that did not

The #13 Division is the first division that has all the same combinations in both lists, the Entries list and the Average Winners list. None of the listed combinations either fell out or snuck in to either list. This really emphasizes that by the #13, ropers are either obviously aware or at the very least, inherently aware of the best way to enter and win in this division. The top four were in the same order in both lists, 6-7, 5-8, 6-7.5 and 5-8.5. The rest you could virtually throw a blanket over as the differences between them were relatively small. While the differences were not as great as we have seen in some of the other divisions, the combinations that performed better or worse in the red barblue bar department were evenly split. The combinations that did better at winning than entries, percentage-wise, were: the 6-7, the 6-7.5, the 5-8.5, 5.5-8 and the 6.5-7. Of the combinations that were on the flip side of this ledger, three were combinations equaling less than 13 (6-6, 5-7, and 5-7.5) plus the 5-8 and the 7-6. I’d say that the 5-8 being in this group was a result of the aforementioned farther apart header-heeler syndrome if weren’t for the fact that the 5-8.5 and the 5.5-8 were both on the positive side of the ledger. Or does having an elite roper on your team make you just that much better? Maybe so, maybe not. Look at the 6-7 and the 6-7.5, for instance. The proportions comparing the two from the Entries to the Average Winners list are strikingly similar. The 6-7 combo accounted for 25.2% of Entries and 29.4% of Average Wins while the 6-7.5 accounted for 8.2% of entries and 10.1% of wins. Hardly any significant difference, the kind that would conceivably exist if those elite ropers made that much of a difference. And look at the 5-7 and the 57.5. Their percentages, respectively, were for the 5-7, 3.6% to 3.1% while the 5-7.5 were 3.0% to 1.8%. Very close but with the 5-7 actually better than the 5-7.5. So there is no evidence in these figures to give an edge to teams with an elite roper.

Ropers participating in the #15 Division are not quite sure as to what is the best combination to put together to increase their odds of winning the #15, assuming they even pay attention to such things and that’s debatable. But here I am spending all this time and energy drawing your attention to such things as the best odds-on combinations for winning divisions so hopefully the concept may fit into your rationale in some little way in the future. But, be that as it may, I say that ropers are not sure quite the best way to enter because of two things. First, the 7-8 combination, the top Entry combination in the #15 makes up only 18.6% of total entries, the smallest percentage for the top spot we have seen in any of the previous divisions. In all the other divisions, the top spot has accounted for at least 23% of entries. Secondly, the percentage of “Other” team combinations is the largest we have seen so far – 26.7%. Again, this is partially attributable to all the different combinations that the #15 brings to the table but it still is an indication that ropers do not perceive the best way to enter to be self-evident. The top four combinations comprise only 48.9% of the total where all the other divisions have been comfortably over 50% for their top four. The teams that did well in the Average Winners list, however, were pretty true to form with one curiousity. There were four of our top ten combinations that had better win percentages than entry percentages. They were the 7-8, the 7-8.5, the 6-9.5 and the 7-7. The 7-7, a fourteen team, i.e. less than the maximum, came in with a better Average Win percentage than Entry percentage, one of the rare times that has happened. So while you have a little wider spectrum of odds-on possibilities to win in the #15, regardless of the 7-7 anomaly, I would still recommend you get as close to fifteen to be a healthy competitor. The “farther apart” tendency also seems to be in play here but not as significantly. Hello Ropers, This summer seems to be flying by as USTRC has a full month of Regional Finals scheduled. Before I know it, September will be here along with the last three Regional Finals and dove season. Next will come October, beautiful weather, and preparation for the Cinch National Finals of Team Roping followed by the beginning of the Holiday season starting in November. When I think about it like that, New Years seems just around the corner. As I have been taking entries and stall reservations for the Regional Finals lately, I am reminded of an important lesson that was brought to my attention last year about this time.

I am the kind of person who has high expectations of myself and I tend to carry the same expectations to those I care about most. I want everyone, including myself, to excel at what they do and I realize that to be good at anything, it takes discipline and diligence. Even though I can have high expectations of others, I do not expect anyone to do anything I would not do myself. I think that leading by example is vitally important if you expect anyone to respect you. With that said, I am going to tell one on myself. Remembering numbers has never been my strong suit. Looking back, I do not think it had anything to do with my

memory, it all had to do with my lack of try. My parents allowed me to have a bank account growing up and I am grateful because I learned how to handle money responsibly as a kid. Even though Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had different bank accounts through the years, I have never made an effort to remember any of my bank account numbers. Although I had good examples growing up as my parents always completely filled out their bank slips complete with their account numbers, and I knew the importance of making sure my money was deposited into the correct account, I never made any effort to know my bank account numbers. Taking it a step further, when I made a deposit or a withdrawal, I would give the bank teller my request without even filling out a slip. Every time I did this, I would watch them fill out the same deposit or withdrawal slip that I walked right past on my way to the counter and they would have to look up my account number before they could proceed. This process went on for years. One afternoon last year, I walked into the bank to make a deposit during my lunch break. I had been taking lots of phone pre-entries so looking up unknown partner ID numbers was

freshly on my mind. I understand those who do not have their partner ID numbers because when I was roping and entering, I usually did not have them either. (By the way, you all are doing a great job giving me your partners’ ID numbers so far this preentry season…I really appreciate it!) As I walked past a guy at the little table who was filling out his deposit slip and straight up to the teller window, I told the bank clerk I needed to make a deposit. She picked up a deposit slip and began filling it out as so many had done for me before, and she asked for my name and account number. As I gave her my name and told her I did not know my account number and that she would have to look it up, it suddenly hit

me…you expect ropers to call all of their partners and have their ID numbers when they enter but you cannot even write your own bank account number on your deposit slip. At that moment, I smiled and thanked God for reminding me of an important lesson. Lead by example and do not ever expect anyone to do something you would not do yourself. Rest assured, now I know my account numbers and I even fill out my own deposit slips. I am very excited to announce there is $12,800 added to the Gold Plus division at each Regional Finals this year. You have seen advertisements all year that there would be a guaranteed minimum of $10,000 added but the final tally of $12,800 came on July 1. With that

kind of added money, the cash payback alone is going to range from 85 to over 100%, depending on the amount of teams entered. I also want you to notice you can enter three times in the Gold Plus division this year. If you do not have a partner(s), you can use the Draw-In option in the Gold Plus division as well as all of the Preliminary divisions. Draw-In entries will be entered onsite and there will be no late fees imposed for onsite Draw-In entries. Please pay close attention to the entry and stall reservation due dates coming up. ut of the mouths of babes come words we can all learn from, words that are indicative of the wisdom that our youth displays especially when we tend to underestimate who they are and what they are doing. Winning comes disguised in many forms and shapes and for Horner and his partner, Brady Norman, winning had been wrapped in a pretty bow. It was suddenly ripped from their hands in a harsh look at the reality of team roping. The pair was the high call back team going into the short go round of the #15 Preliminary of the 2010 Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping when they failed to make a qualified run in the short go round and things crumbled around them. Talk about disillusionment. However, sometimes losing brings out the winner in each of us and when the going gets tough the tough get going so they say. The pair were entered in the #15 Shoot-Out at the Finals as well and with the wind knocked out of their sails it would be interesting to see how the young guns would approach the #15 Shoot-Out. Norman and Horner are an interesting pair of young ropers. They rope really well and complement each other admirably. Their attitude and approach to team roping, especially after the fiasco of the #15 Preliminary, exhibited a lesson we all could learn from. Disappointment is one thing; how we handle disappointment is a whole other ball of twine. As Horner and Norman worked through the issues they stayed on track, maintained their focus and deliberately moved forward. There was no looking back no rehashing and wishing things were different. The writing was on the wall. What was

Drew Horner & Brady Norman done was done and what lay ahead was anyone’s guess. Norman, who hails from Springer, Oklahoma, was a little nervous going into the short go round of the #15 Shoot-Out. This was the Finals and the results of the #15 Preliminary was still fresh. “I was okay with being the second high team back going into the short go round,” Norman said. “Sure we had faced some struggle and a lot of disappointment with the other roping but we couldn’t think about that anymore. There wasn’t anything we could do about it. It was behind us. We had to put it behind us.” Horner knew in his heart he was a winner. He believed that beyond anything else. There was a plan in place. In an interview with USTRC announcer Ferron Lucero, Horner summed it all up in a few choice words of wisdom. “God made us all winners when we were born,” Horner stated. “There is no loser here.” Horner and Norman were already labeled “Champions” in someone else’s book! When the pair rode into the box for their short go round steer

there was only one team left to rope and Kyle Beach and Cesar DeLaCruz were a compelling force to contend with. There was little room for error and with a prizeline consisting of $71,000, Martin Championship Trophy saddles, Tony Lama Ostrich boots, Gist Gold Championship buckles and Western Horseman Collector Prints you might say there was a bit of pressure. Horner and Norman needed a time of 8.45 or better to take the lead from Jay McClain and Clayton Vanaken. It all boiled down to some very aggressive and competitive team roping. When Horner nodded for the steer Norman was on the same page and the pair knocked down the barricades with a time of 7.09 to nail down first place with one team left to rope. The pair was good for at least $38,100 and that was nothing to scowl at. “And then there was one,” echoed through the speakers inside the Oklahoma State Fairground coliseum. Horner and Norman knew that whatever happened God would bring out the champion in both of them and the plan was bigger than either of them could grasp.

Despite an awesome run by Beach and DeLaCruz with an 8.31 the pair couldn’t budge what was meant to be. Horner and Norman had risen above disappointment, struggle, and frustration and embraced the glory intended for them. It was a sweet and humbling feeling. They were the winners of the #15 Shoot-Out at the National Finals. There is a certain pride and gratification in knowing young men are out there in our business of roping who illustrate what team roping is about. They show that winning is not always about first place but more about staying in place, focused and committed to the sport regardless of what happens and how it all unfolds. They are winners and champions above and beyond the definition of the words. Drew Horner and Brady Norman have set an example we can all learn from. Both young men will be a major asset, not only to our sport, but in their future endeavors in life. Cool Like Jim was at a roping recently and I got the opportunity to meet Tony Lang, President of Cashel horse products. He was telling me about their new feed bag he had designed. I have never personally used a feed bag, so I had no prejudice for or against. When I was younger I thought that horses might breathe too much dust off the grain. But with the Purina feeds I use now, there is no dust. The old type of feedbags were usually canvas with a small piece of leather sewn in with holes punched in it for air circulation, and I didn’t think that the air flow was sufficient. I probably wouldn’t have tried these feed bags if I hadn’t met Tony. He was so excited about the results, and the feedback he was getting about how much horse’s actually liked the bags. I know that sounds strong, but it’s true. Horses will relax and chew their

food and settle down when fed. Another reason I tried these feed bags was a friend named Jim York. He was a real cowboy and had a lot of wisdom on anything that pertained to horses and cattle. He used a feed bag on the road, and I always thought that it was cool that he gave his horse a little grain when he got to a roping. I also thought it was cool that his horses stood calmly at the trailer eating their grain instead of pawing the bucket or banging it on the trailer. I wish I’d had these bags this winter. I had a mare in foal, and the people at Purina told me to double up on the mare’s feed one month out before she had her colt. Well, I also had a gelding in

with her – he would eat his feed and then run her off so he was the one getting double grain. So you might say, “Why don’t you just put him in another pen?” Well, because all my pens were filled with horses, and every time I build another pen it seems like I get another horse to fill it. I guess I’m a horse addict. What I ended up doing was doubling up on the gelding’s feed also, so he and the mare would finish at the same time. You know the rest of the story – now the gelding is double fat and the mare looks great. These new bags on top are made of vinyl screening so the horses get lots of air, and the bottoms are closed in to

Sunday afternoon.” Cobb had dabbled a bit in roping while in high school, due mostly to the mentoring of an FFA teacher and professional calf roper named Frank Miller. “He taught me how to handle a rope,” said Cobb, when SuperLooper caught up with him during the Cowboy Capital Classic in May. Now, usually when doctors are paired with a sport, it usually tends to be golf, but for Cobb, golf was, in a word, boring. “I’ve never played golf,” he said. “It is just too slow. Roping is infinitely more exciting than golf.” Finding time to rope is a challenge. The Cowboy Capital Classic was just the third time the surgeon had been horseback since March 2010. On top of that, all of his horses are now in Texas full time with regular roping partner Ron Anderson – factors that seriously cut into good practice time. But, with good reason. Dr. Cobb specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery and regularly attends and lectures at educational courses and meetings worldwide. He has developed surgical

instrumentation and techniques for endoscopic cubital tunnel release, teaching surgeons worldwide on this technique. It is a bit ironic that Cobb focuses on hand surgery, given the occasional hazard faced by team ropers who might come to the misfortune of parting ways with one of their digits. “That’s why I’m a header,” he says. Currently rated a #4, Cobb is not shy about “entering up”

when it comes to roping with USTRC. He’ll enter everything from the #13 on down because he says he thinks it’s the only way he’s going to get better. “Entering the way I do is the only way I am going to get #6 and #7 heelers to rope with me,” he said. “I always ask them how the handle was for them, and maybe they’re being politically correct, but they always tell me to just keep doing what I’m doing.” Good advice for a team roper making his way in the sport and great testimony for USTRC’s draw in option program. n Tyson Cobb at work during a orthopedic surgery

The Border Is There A Double Standard?

attle and the Mexico border has been a hot topic among rodeo and team roping associations and southern state cattle ranchers in recent weeks as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has closed the Mexican border to all horned cattle. A statement from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), an agency of the USDA, said Chihuahuaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s status for bovine tuberculosis (TB) will be downgraded from Modified Accredited to Accredited Preparatory as of August 18, 2011. On Monday, June 20 through Thursday June 23, 2011, APHIS refused entry on all bovines from Chihuahua, Mexico that were presented for entry at any port. After June 23, 2011, bovines from Chihuahua could only be imported to the United States if they are accompanied by TB test charts containing (1) the names and signatures of specific accredited veterinarians who have been approved by SAGARPA (Mexicoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s counterpart to the USDA) to perform TB testing; and (2) the names and signatures of a supervising official (SAGARPA) veterinarian. The entire lot containing any animals not accompanied after June 23, 2011 by test charts with these approved names and signatures will continue to be considered ineligible for importation, and will be refused entry. In addition, effective Monday June 20, 2011 and continuing until further notice, bovines from Chihuahua, Mexico that are designated as, or believed to be rodeo animals are prohibited entry to the United States and will be refused entry by VS at any port. This category includes any bovines with discernable horns, and animals belonging to the Corriente and other popular rodeo breeds. So, while thousands of feeder cattle are still allowed entry into the United

States, a few hundred head of roping/rodeo cattle are NOT, even if the same accredited veterinarians have tested them. Why? There is little doubt this is a political move by Mexican/U.S. officials to keep the border open for the much larger trade of feeder cattle, which is a major industry for Mexico and one it probably needs to keep economic balance in the country. Even though roping/rodeo cattle only represent 1.6% of the imports, they are being used as a scapegoat for the problems Mexico has with TB in feeder cattle. According to Kirk Bray, president of the USTRC, this action sets the tone of a double standard for Mexican cattle imports. The entry requirements should be the same for both the feeder cattle and horned cattle. If several thousand head of feeder cattle are allowed to cross the border after being tested by accredited veterinariansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; then so too should a few hundred head of horned cattle. He does agree that there is a difference between the types of cattle once they are in the United States, as horned cattle tend to travel more due to the nature of their use. That said, the horned cattle have been subject to more testing once here and those regulations are willingly complied with. Through the years, there have been many cases of TB in Mexican origin cattle, but only one of those cases has involved a Corriente. In fact, this year alone

there have been fifteen infected herds of beef cattle in the state of Chihuahuaâ&#x20AC;Śtheir limit is ten according to USDA standards. In addition, at least four traces of TB have been found this year in Chihuahua origin cattle slaughtered in U.S. packing plants. However, according to the USDA the cause for the recent border shut down stems from a single case of TB found in a herd of horned cattle in Arizona. The steer was found during a routine state regulation TB test prior to being shipped to Montana. It has since been destroyed and the other 300 head it was comingled with have all been slaughtered. None of the other steers were found to be infected with TB. The USTRC, as well as the PRCA and other major rodeo and team roping associations are working together to offer a plan for the re-opening of the Mexico border for horned cattle. Leading the cause for the horned cattle industry is Matt Sanchez who is a major supplier of Mexican rodeo/roping cattle in the U.S. According to Sanchez, he is confident that a plan will come together that will work for everyone, including SAGARA, the USDA and those who use the recreation cattle here in the states. In the meantime, domestic supplies of horned cattle may be used to fill the void while the USDA/APHIS declares a position to allow for future imports of Mexican horned cattle. n

10 Tips for Choosing the Best Hay for Your Horse

igh-quality hay can be an important source of essential nutrients in your horse’s diet. A horse’s protein and energy requirements depend on age, stage of development, metabolism and workload. A mature horse will eat 2 to 2.5% of its body weight a day, and for optimum health, nutritionists recommend that at least half of this should be roughage such as hay. For a 1,000-pound

horse that means at least 10 pounds of roughage each day. Hay generally falls into one of two categories – grasses or legumes. Legume hay is higher in protein, energy, calcium and vitamin A than grass hays. While hay alone may not meet the total dietary requirements of young, growing horses or those used for high levels of performance, high-quality hay may supply ample nutrition for less active adult horses. Once you’ve determined the best category of hay for your horse, most people select hay based on how it looks, smells and feels. Use the following tips from the American Association of Equine Practitioners to select the best hay for your horse:

1. It’s what’s inside that counts. Ask that one or several bales are opened so you can evaluate the hay inside the bales. Do not worry about slight discoloration on the outside, especially in stacked hay. 2. Choose hay that is as fine stemmed, green and leafy as possible, and is soft to the touch. 3. Avoid hay that is overcured, excessively sun-bleached, or smells moldy, musty, dusty or fermented.

4. Select hay that has been harvested when the plants are in early bloom for legume hay or before seed heads have formed in grasses. Examine the leaves, stems and flowers or seed pods to determine the level of maturity. 5. Avoid hay that contains significant amounts of weeds, dirt, trash or debris. 6. Examine hay for signs of insect infestation or disease. Be especially careful to check for blister beetles in alfalfa. Ask the grower about any potential problems in the region. 7. Reject bales that seem excessively heavy for their size or feel warm to the touch, as they could contain excess moisture that could cause mold, or worse, spontaneous combustion. 8. When possible, purchase and feed hay within a year of harvest to preserve its nutritional value. 9. Store hay in a dry, sheltered area out of the rain, snow and sun, or cover the stack to protect it from the elements. 10. When buying in quantity, have the hay analyzed by a certified forage laboratory to determine its actual nutrient content.

Trailering Basic Things You Need to Know By Heather Smith Thomas

hen pulling a loaded trailer, always consider how the things you do will affect your passengers. The horses must be able to keep their balance and peace of mind. They will always haul better if you make the trip as smooth as possible without lurching starts, sudden stops, or fast corners that might make them scramble to keep their balance. Start as slowly and smoothly as possible, and build up speed gradually. Don’t exceed the speed limit. Then if you need to slow down or stop for some reason, you can do it in a reasonable manner (gradually) without jostling the horses or throwing them forward with a too-quick slowdown or stop. On rough roads (back roads, gravel roads that may have potholes or “washboard” bumps) slow down considerably, driving slower than normal. The horses will be subjected to a very rough ride if you take a bumpy road too fast. Slow down before turns so you can take the actual turn slowly enough that horses can keep their balance—so your drop in speed is not abrupt, or they will be thrown forward. Take sharp corners

very slowly (right angle turns should be taken at about 5 to 10 miles per hour— more slowly with inexperienced horses.) Be sure the trailer itself is completely around the corner before you begin to accelerate. All too often a driver begins to accelerate after the pulling vehicle has made the turn, not remembering that the trailer is still making the corner. Always slow down for curves. A horse must be able to balance and brace himself on corners and curves, and it’s easier for him if there is less centrifugal force throwing him to the outside of the corner. Several studies have shown horses prefer to ride backward, because it is easier for them to balance. If you load them in a stock trailer and tie them all on one side, without partitions, they assume a slant. If they can’t position themselves standing backward, they will turn at about a 45degree angle with their heads toward the rear. They are front heavy, using head and neck for balance. If you load them in a truck or trailer without tying them, they often turn to face backward. The predominant and most abrupt change in speed when you travel down the highway is slowing down, rather than fast starts; horses quickly learn it is easier to keep their balance to compensate and not fall forward (using head and neck to shift their weight) when facing backward. Riding backward

is usually impossible in a 2-horse trailer (it would put too much weight on the back end of the trailer), but works well in a stock trailer. Many large horse trailers have the horses positioned diagonally, with dividers to keep them in their slot. This seems to work well for the horses and for weight distribution in the trailer. In a large stock trailer, horsemen often tie horses to the side, so they are riding crosswise or diagonally. Load the heaviest horses in the front, to put more weight on the pulling vehicle rather than on the back end of the trailer.

Trial Run If you’ve never driven a truck/trailer combination, do several practice sessions (especially with a big stock trailer or 4horse trailer) without the horses. Then it won’t matter if you make a few mistakes or have a jerky start, or take a corner too fast. Make right angle turns and find out how much your particular trailer cuts into the corners, so you’ll know how much to swing out and allow for the turn when navigating an intersection. Practice parking and backing. If you don’t have horses in the trailer, you won’t be under as much stress (worrying about how your mistakes might affect them). Pulling the trailer a few times can build your confidence and also show you areas you need to improve before you haul horses. Use a big level field or an empty parking lot for practice sessions, where you have plenty of room and safety. Set out cones or other visible obstacles and practice driving around them without hitting them, backing between them,

making corners while backing, pulling into a tight “parking space” etc. As you practice parking in the open area, you will learn how much space you need before you try it at a fairgrounds (backing between two other trailers) or along a street or in a crowded parking lot. You need to know how many parking spaces it will take. With a bumper pull you can’t make turns as sharply as you can with a gooseneck while backing up; you can safely jackknife a gooseneck but cannot do that with a bumper hitch. Whatever type of hitch you have, practice backing through a series of cones until you learn how to turn the truck properly to achieve the appropriate movement of the trailer. After you feel comfortable driving the rig in a practice area, drive on the highway (with trailer empty), and in your town. Take the trailer a few times before you put your horses in it. Take it downtown in the early mornings when parking lots are relatively empty. Take someone with you who’s experienced pulling a trailer, to give tips and advice or help get you out of a jam. The first times you drive in traffic it helps to have a passenger-navigator— another set of eyes to help you know if vehicles are coming up alongside or how close you are to an obstacle when turning or parking. A navigator on your first trips with horses is also helpful; then you won’t be trying to read a map or a ign while attempting to get through traffic and intersections. Become proficient at parking and maneuvering through traffic before you worry about horses. You’ll find out how tight a corner you can or cannot take, and how much room you need for various maneuvers. Every vehicle and trailer combo is a little different; whether you have an extended cab or a short one makes your base and angles different, for instance. Each rig pulls differently; you

must learn the finetuning on your own outfit. The first time you pull the trailer loaded, use horses that are already experienced travelers. On a practice run you won’t have to worry about the horses as well as your driving. An old campaigner knows how to stand up in a trailer even if you take a turn a little too sharp or have an awkward start or stop.

Driving In Traffic Always allow plenty of space between yourself and the vehicle in front. If pulling a heavy load, stay well back—so that if you have to stop you can do it gradually instead of suddenly. In town, a safe bet is to allow at least a 4-car space between you and the next vehicle (especially when approaching an intersection). Then if the outfit in front of you slams on the brakes, you’ll have time to stop without throwing the horses against the trailer or having one fall down. As your speed increases, your spacing also needs to increase. Determine the stopping distance of your own loaded vehicle, because each rig will be a little different (depending on weight, speed, condition of your brakes, etc.) and there is no magic formula. Do this out on a road with little traffic. Drive your vehicle at various speeds, with the horses, and practice a controlled stop without upsetting the horses, and determine the distance it took and mark it. Pick a spot on the road as a starting point and then go back to it to see how far you went. As a ball-park example, a 20-foot trailer with 5 horses, being pulled by a Dodge diesel pickup and traveling 65 mph, takes between 1/4 and 1/3 of a mile to come to a complete stop without tipping horses over. Out on the freeway, make sure there is at least 100 yards between you and the vehicle in front. This gives you time to either change lanes or stop if that vehicle slows or stops. When traveling on the freeway with several lanes of traffic, travel with the lane going closest to your speed, so you won’t have to change lanes often or cause people

to have to pass you. If you’ll be turning off, get into the turning lane well in advance so you won’t have a problem finding room at the last minute. Check your mirrors often when moving in multi-lane traffic, because you now have more blind spots, with traffic on both sides of you.Be careful when changing lanes or passing another vehicle, plan ahead, and remember your blind spots. Don’t just look in your mirrors once and go; check several times to make sure another vehicle has not come up behind or beside you in a blind spot. Always use your turn signal well in advance of where you’ll turn, to give people adequate warning. Tap your brakes gently a couple times, to give the following vehicle notice that you are about to do something, and to give the horses a little notice. If they’ve been napping, this will wake them up and help them be more prepared to brace themselves or balance properly if you’ll be stopping or making a turn. This is especially important if it’s been a long, straight haul and the horses might be dozing. On a mountainous 2-lane road you may be going slower than the regular traffic. Be aware of cars behind you, and let them pass wherever you can. If you have to pass a vehicle, make sure you have plenty of room to get around it. Make certain you are clear of the vehicle before you swing back into your own lane. It can be difficult to tell; a lot of the new trucks have mirrors that make objects look farther away than they really are.Whenever you make a turn, steer wide. Keep in mind that the trailer will cut the corner on the inside and will make a sharper turn than your pickup. If you don’t swing wide to allow enough room it may hit something (like a stop sign or a parked vehicle) or run over the curb on a street. If you’ll be making a turn at an intersection, and make a 90-degree turn to the right, do not swing out into the left lane to give yourself room to make the turn, even though this might be your first thought. You always have a blind spot between your mirror and the back of your trailer somewhere, and a car might be trying to pass you as you swing out. It is illegal to swing into that left lane to make a turn. The correct way to make the turn is to stay in your own lane until you are making the corner, swinging out into the SUPERLOOPER MAGAZINE / 33

Coping With Trailer Sway Most trailers have stabilizers and you rarely have a serious problem even if the horses are moving around. But if your load does shift suddenly, you may experience difficulty in controlling the rig. If the trailer exerts too much rocking side pull on your vehicle, you are at risk for loss of control or a rollover. Don’t hit the brakes. Take your foot off the gas and try to keep your truck straight as you coast to a slower speed. Do NOT try to correct. The trailer is swaying back and forth but if you get too much sway in the pulling vehicle to try to compensate for the trailer movement, you will overcorrect and the rig may jackknife or fishtail, possibly pulling you off the road. If you hit the brakes with the trailer fishtailed sideways, you’ll make the problem worse. Try to coast to a lower speed without using the brakes.

Points To Keep In Mind • Trailers are usually a little wider than trucks • You won’t be able to see out a rear-view mirror • You’ll have some blind spots even when using good side mirrors • When turning, the trailer will always cut a turn tighter than the truck, and a gooseneck will cut a corner more than a bumper pull • When backing, a bumper pull can’t turn as sharply as a gooseneck 34 / AUGUST 2011

oncoming traffic lane on the other road (the road you are turning onto after the intersection). Those oncoming drivers can see you making the turn and will be able to slow down and allow you to swing and get back into your own lane. This is the only legal way for a big truck/trailer combo to make a turn at an intersection.By contrast, if you change lanes to the left (before you pull through the intersection) to initiate a right hand turn, there is the possibility that a little car might be directly behind you in your blind spot, and it might pull up alongside you on the right. An impatient driver trying to pass you on the right (as you are swinging to the left) could get run over when you make your turn. You’ll encounter tricky situations when pulling a trailer in traffic. Keep a cool head. Even if another driver becomes impatient or upset at you, he can wait for you to get out of the way or out of a bad situation. Safety is your prime concern.

Backing A Trailer Practice with an empty trailer. Backing up always takes more room than pulling forward, so practice in an open area. The basic principles of backing a trailer are the same, whether it’s a bumper pull or a gooseneck, except that the gooseneck trailer will make tighter corners without getting into trouble. With a bumper pull you have to be more careful not to bind the bumper against the tongue. If you are backing and turning, you initiate the turn of the trailer by turning the pickup in the opposite direction you want the trailer to go. That pushes the tongue away from the direction you want the tail end to go, which makes it begin to turn. As it begins to come around, straighten your pickup tires (turn the wheel back a little toward center) and follow the trailer around as it makes its turn, turning your pickup tires the same way the trailer is going. Get the trailer aimed the desired direction and then follow it, trying to have your pickup tires go in approximately the same tracks, following that curve at the rate of turn

you want—until you have to make an adjustment. Don’t straighten the pickup completely (passing the point of where you are following the trailer) or you’d accelerate the trailer’s turn, since this will be pushing the tongue away from where you want to go. Follow the trailer, making small adjustments as needed (not large ones, especially with a gooseneck) as you go. The trailer will react rapidly if you give too much correction, so you need to learn how to follow the trailer as it makes its turn, making only tiny adjustments. If you need to correct, you can make those adjustments as you go, if you have a lot of room. If space is tight, however (like trying to back through a gate or into a tight parking slot), you’ll have to pull forward again and start over if the trailer gets too crooked. As you pull forward, turn the nose of the pickup in the opposite direction from which you started, to straighten it out. Watch the trailer in your mirrors. When it is straight with the slot again, try again. If you are backing into a gateway that’s a right angle to the direction your vehicle is sitting, it is helpful to pull away from the opening, to where you can always see the gateway as you back up. Don’t turn to the offside from the hole, or none of your mirrors will show you where the boundaries are. Your goal is to approach the opening, swinging your vehicle around to where you can always see it as you approach, either out of your driver’s side window or driver’s side mirrors. If possible, never rely only on your passenger-side mirror. If you ever get into a position where you can’t see, you are better off to stop and pull forward a few feet (it doesn’t take much) to straighten out to where you can maintain a good view of the obstacle. If you have a 4-wheel-drive pickup with high and low range, put it into 4-wheel low when backing around a corner, because you can control it better, and slower. Even people who do this all the time usually shift down to maintain perfect control and precision on those turns while backing up. You are more likely to hit the slot the first time, if you are going slow enough that you can react and make the small corrections as needed. Think ahead about how you are going to turn, and keep the object you are backing to or through in your driver’s side mirror at all times.

Shape Up Your Trailer

odayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy is no doubt hitting the pocketbooks of many team ropers. Those who enjoy the sport know that the cost of fuel, cattle, horses and equipment has, like most everything else in the country, risen over the last few years. The economic framework of the country has been teetering for several years thus plunging markets into tailspins. The results have been clear and many Americans, including ropers are

feeling the pinch in their bank accounts. The economic hit is more noticeable on large purchase items. In the roping community, people are not buying as many new trucks and trailers as they did in years past. Instead they are spending money on repairs and maintenance on their vehicles and trailers, keeping them longer before they trade them in to upgrade to newer models. This cost saving allows a roper to travel to more events without the overhead of higher payments for newer vehicles and trailers. With this in mind, it is recommended that ropers take their vehicles to certified mechanics and their horse trailers to reputable repair shops for regular maintenance and repairs. However, there are a lot of things ropers can do themselves in the backyard or shop that can edge out high price repairs and maintenance costs. Here is a checklist of things to consider doing yourself.

FLOOR AND BODY For wood floor trailers, it is recommended to regularly check for soft spots, rotting and splintering in the wood. This includes the ramp if you have one. Replace damaged floor boards and treat the floor with a preservative. If you are using mats, ensure they fit snugly and replace if they have holes in them or are beginning to shred or split. For aluminum floors, check for cracks in the floor, as well as in the welds where they are fitted together with the sidewall of the trailer. Looking around the inside of both metal and aluminum trailers, check for cracks in the welds. A qualified welder can usually repair the cracks and broken welds, if any. For metal trailers, look for rusted areas both inside and outside. Use a metal brush to clean the area, removing heavy rust and loose paint if needed before you touch it up with a good spray paint or primer paint. For heavily rusted areas, be sure to use a rust cleaner before painting the area and if the rust has eaten through or weakened any areas, have a welder or metal fabricator replace or repair the areas. For trailers with fiberglass roofs, check for damage and replace or repair. A local body shop is your best bet for these concerns. Be sure to oil all hinges, dividers, doors, locks, and windows. Over time and in adverse weather conditions, these areas of your trailer can become stiff and a good oiling

can loosen them up and keep them operational. Finally, check all gaskets and moulding around doors and windows. A good fit and tight seal is needed to ensure your horses comfort while traveling and to keep your trailer in good condition.

TIRES AND WHEELS Poor tires can lead to long, side-of-theroad delays to and from events. Be sure all tires are in good condition. Look for bulges, slices, bare spots, worn tread and cracks in all of your trailer tires, including your spare. Keeping good rubber on the road can make your travels a lot safer for you and your horses. When replacing tires, be sure they are the right size and are regulated correctly for the trailer load. Replace all of the tires at once if you are able to do so and be sure to keep them at the proper inflation. It is a good idea to rotate the tires on your trailer. When doing so, it is recommended to have them balanced at that time as well. Digging a little deeper, regular maintenance includes cleaning and repacking wheel bearings and replacing seals. In some cases, wheel bearings should be replaced. Check by lifting the

trailer with proper jacks so the tires on one side of the trailer are off the ground. Grab the top and bottom of the tires and push and pull in opposite directions. There should not be any movement. If there is, you should replace the wheel bearings. On a regular basis, check to make sure all of the wheel lugs are tight and insure they all still there as well.

BRAKES Inspect and service the brake drums and brake pads. A qualified repair shop is your best bet, but if you are mechanically inclined, you can do this yourself. Make sure the trailer brakes are working properly and replace anything that is worn. Be sure to check fluid levels and lines to hydraulic brakes and electrical lines to electric brakes. After checking the brake system, do a loaded and unloaded drive test to check for even stopping. One thing that is often overlooked on the brake system is the emergency trailer brake battery. You can do this yourself with a volt-meter or have it done by a qualified technician.

broken connection or if the problem lies in the trailer plug. Wiring problems can become such a daunting task that a technician may be your best bet to repair or completely replace the wiring harness in your trailer.

SUSPENSION Although the suspension is often overlooked during a routine inspection, it is a good idea to check at least a few of the suspension components. You should routinely grease the springs and shackles of the trailer, check shock absorbers and bushings for repair or replacing and tighten up the axle bolts. A good suspension can aid your horses comfort while traveling to events and allow them to be in better condition when you reach the event.

WIRING AND LIGHTS Wiring harnesses on older trailers tend to crack, break and become disconnected throughout the years and replacing them or repairing them can seem overwhelming. Begin by seeing if all the lights work. If any are not working, start by replacing bulbs or lights. Be sure to see if the wiring is intact, clean and the light is secured to the trailer. A bad ground is often a culprit in nonworking trailer lights. If they still do not work, you probably have a wiring problem. Trace the wire from the non-functional light back to the trailer light connector to see if there is a broken wire, loose or

HITCH Heading to the front of the trailer, your hitch is the one thing that you are probably most familiar with. However, be sure to implement some maintenance to ensure that everything keeps working properly. It is a good idea to clean and oil the jack stand regularly. This will keep it in

good working order. You should also grease the ball on both bumper-pull and gooseneck hitches, as well as the coupler on the trailer itself occasionally. Finally, if you are hitching up a new trailer or using a new truck for the first time, check the levelness of the hitched trailer. Keep the trailer a little higher in the front when hitched without load to keep it level once horses are loaded.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT Check the safety chains. Be sure they are not broken or in need of replacing. Keep your first aid kit complete. Keep one for your horses as well as one for yourself or your traveling companions. Also be sure you have a trailer safety kit included. This should have safety reflectors for roadside emergencies, a complete toolkit that includes a tire lug wrench and a jack that will lift your trailer. Extra light bulbs, fuses and extra wire for emergency repairs are also recommended. It is a good idea to keep an extra halter or two and lead ropes inside your tack compartment just in case. One last tip is to check the registration of your trailer to be sure it is up to date and make sure the license plate is still connected securely to the trailer. Also be sure you have hauling papers and legal documents on your horses before you haul. Being prepared and keeping your trailer maintained prior to hitting the road to your next roping will pay off in the long run. Your trailer will last longer, and you can have peace of mind that you and your horses are safe going to and from your next event.

ll heads turned and the room came to a hushed standstill when big Jim Kincaid** walked through the swinging saloon doors. He smelled of buffalo guts and animal trappings. He sauntered up to the bar and laid a twelve inch long Bowie knife on the counter. The bar keeper looked at him and struggled with serving him but was afraid not to. Kincaid drank long and hard twice from the tumbler then turned to the crowd staring at him. “Enid, you call this settlement?” He asked. “I missed the land run. This settlement wasn’t here before. Any more land available?” No one spoke. Kincaid turned and gulped another slug of the hard liquor. “Enid,” he muttered. “What’s to become of the buffalo, the Cherokee and the fur trappers?” With those mutterings under his breath he walked out the swinging doors. In mere minutes the small saloon returned to normal and Jim Kincaid walked into history. Today, Enid continues to be the economic, social, medical, political, and educational hub of Northwest Oklahoma. After more than six months at the top of the leader board, Jackie Hobbs is now the pursuer, having traded the number one position for third with new leader Rebecca Neuhaus of Huntsville, Texas. Rebecca was already breathing down her neck after a great run in May, but she wrapped up the top spot with nearly $21,000 in earnings after continued success in late June and early July. Making a trip to the Circle T Arena in Hamilton for an affiliate roping June 25, Neuhaus got the mojo working with partners Colbey Payne and Robert Briggs. Working with Payne, she nabbed second in the Average on the head in both the #9 and #10, while sixth in the Average in the #9 with Briggs. Then it was on to the Oklahoma Championships, where she took first in the Average in the #12 Gold Plus with partner Jessica Bowen and first in the All Girl with Amanda Jones.

SHOOT-OUT ROPINGS Ropers may not enter with the same partner more than once in any Shoot-Out Division. Qualification for a Regional Shoot-Out requires $2,000 of available earnings, which may come from either partner or a contribution from both partners. You may use a portion (increments of $100) of Available Earnings (sum of Flex Earnings and Applied Earnings) toward a Shoot-Out qualification. For example, if the Header has $1,400 in Available Earnings and the Heeler has $600 in Available Earnings, they can combine their Available Earnings to qualify for a Regional Shoot-Out. Eligibility to enter a Shoot-out division requires the roper to participate in a 2011 season Affiliate, Grassroots, or Sanctioned qualifier – OR participate in a Regional Preliminary prior to the Shoot-out entry in that division.
