Maass’ Gold-Buckle Bid Takes on More Luster in Casper Justin Maass’ year hasn’t gone at all like he planned. And he’s fine with that. The Giddings, Texas, tie-down roper thought he was going to be cutting back on his competitive schedule in 2012 and by this time would be opening a roadside restaurant with family and friends. Instead he’s in the midst of the best season of his 17-year PRCA career, one that has him – after a big win at the July 10-14 Central Wyoming Fair & PRCA Rodeo – looking more and more like a threat to unseat Tuf Cooper as world champion. “It’s going to be a little bit foreign to me (going to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as a favorite)

If it’s not, I’ll know I put my best effort into it.” Maass has led the world standings since winning major winter rodeos in Denver and San Antonio and he upped his margin over second-place Hunter Herrin to more than $18,000 this weekend with his $8,821 payday in this Wrangler Million Dollar Silver Tour event presented by Justin Boots, plus another $1,321 at the Sheridan, WY Rodeo.

At the Central Wyoming Fair Outdoor Arena, Maass was second in each of the first two rounds and tied for second with Herrin in the finals to finish with a three-head time of 25.9 seconds. It gave him a winning margin of 1.1 seconds over Cody Ohl. “I didn’t plan on this,” Maass said. “I wish I could explain it. I had full intention of shortening my circle up and staying close to home this year.” He made a bid for some land on the road between Austin and Houston, figuring it was a good location for travelers to stop off for a buffet-style lunch or a steak dinner. “I didn’t get (the land); that’s the only reason I’m out here rodeoing,” Maass said. “If I would have bought that land I might not have even entered Denver and it would be a whole different story. “I’ve just been a battler my whole career, so it’s a real blessing to do what I’ve been able to do so far this year. Champions Crowned At Youth Rodeo IFYR

ore than 800 cowboys and cowgirls ran through the gates at the 20th Annual International Finals Youth Rodeo in Shawnee, Oklahoma, but only a handful filled their dreams of gold buckles and paychecks. Two rookies on their first trip to the IFYR won titles, and three champions from 2011 repeated their feats again this year. For many of the champions, their success came with hard work and tears as they realized their practice paid off. The 20th Annual IFYR paid out over $200,000 in money and prizes, and Bloomer Trailers awarded a oneyear lease for a trailer to the winning boys All-Around and girls All-Around champions. Winning the trailer were boys All-Around, champion – Garrett Smith from Rexburg, Idaho and the girls All-Around and goat tying champion – Mia Manzanares from Opelousas, Louisiana. The breakaway roping championship went home with Samantha Little from Hackberry, Louisiana. This was a repeat win for Little who finished with a average of 7.2 seconds on three runs to claim the title for the second year in a row. She felt more pressure this year, than last year, “I came back in fifth (place) last year, and didn’t expect to win at all,” she said. This year, she entered the short go-round in first place, “So the pressure was on. I was

really nervous, and hadn’t eaten all day.” Little, the daughter of Tim and Angie Little, loves softball as much as she loves rodeo, and after her 2013 graduation from Hackberry High School, will either play college softball or compete in collegiate rodeo. A big up and comer in the world of tie-down roping, Catfish Brown from Collinsville, Texas earned the 2012 IFYR tie-down roping championship. The 18 year old cowboy, son of Jerry and Cindy Brown, turned in a time of 26.2 seconds on three head and attributed his success to “lots of practice, and focus.” The six-day IFYR is a different setup than most rodeos, so Catfish’s strategy was different. “You don’t get to go home and practice, so you just have to be mentally ready.” He will attend Vernon (Texas) College this fall on a rodeo scholarship and in addition to the calf roping, he’ll also compete in the steer wrestling and team roping. Team ropers Trevor Kirchenschlager from Yuma, Colorado and Austin Crist from Rocky Ford, Colorado paired up to win second place in the first and short go-rounds, and ninth place in the second round, to earn their gold buckles. Trevor is following in his brother’s footsteps. Older brother Tate won

the IFYR team roping titles in 20092011. “My plan is to keep the family tradition alive,” he said. As a freshman, he has three more years to compete at the IFYR. “I just want to keep the Kirchenschlager name in there for seven years.” Austin, who heads for Trevor, will be a junior this fall. The two have roped together for three years, and compete as partners in the Kansas High School Rodeo Association. They often spend a week at each other’s houses, giving them a chance to practice together. Trevor is the son of Roger and Tammy Kirchenschlager. Austin’s parents are Justin and Kendra Crist. The 20th annual edition of the IFYR, which ran July 10-13, 2012, featured 857 youth cowboys and cowgirls from 29 states. Each timed event winner was awarded a Twister saddle, and roughstock winners received a custom-made pair of chaps, a duffle bag, and gear. All winners were given a Gist buckle. Starting at the first roping of the 2012 season in Ft. Worth, the “00” division will be split into two ropings. The top end of the “00” ropers will become “00 Select”. This is being done to create a more competitive atmosphere for the lower end of the 00 ropers. Ropers will be evaluated through the Finals and after October 10 will be able to call and check on “00” or “00 Select” status.

The Difference Between Practicing and Roping

love to rope, and when I just rope, it’s a lot of fun. To me, that’s making three to six runs on a couple of horses. Flank and tie some, but not enough to get sore. Practicing is something totally different. Practice needs to be strategically planned to be effective. You need to be smart enough to know what you need to practice on. Professional athletes focus on overcoming their weaknesses. If you’re not sure of your weaknesses, find someone knowledgeable that can help you pinpoint those areas. Practice is not necessarily fun, but I’ve made myself love it. When I walk into my arena to practice, I visualize that I’m punching a time clock. To feel like I’ve really practiced, I want to wear out a couple of ropes and a pigging string. I have calluses on my hands from tying and if I practice to my standards, I’ll be sore for a few days. To practice like that, it takes a lot of horses and calves. Don’t go run twenty or thirty head of calves on your horse. That’s not practice and you’ll trash your horse. If you have trouble catching, get a breakaway and learn to catch like that. You can do a lot of groundwork without a horse, though it does take a lot of calves. Making runs is fun, but look at it like running a business. Keep your strengths sharp, but focus on your weaknesses and work at that. Be strategic and

A Whole Lot of Shakin' Going On

here’s a verse in Hebrews 12:26 that says “Once again I will shake not only the earth, but the Heavens also. 27 This means that the things on earth will be shaken so that only eternal things will be left.” The world we live in is always talking about investments, specifically long-term investments. The longest-term investment that we can make is the investment for eternity. The scripture is very clear that in our last days the nations will be shakin’ the earth, including all of the kingdoms of our world. Hebrews 12:28 “Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be destroyed, let us be thankful and please God by worshipping him with holy fear and awe. 29 For our God is a consuming fire.” Today the many regimes in the Middle East, including Egypt, have fallen. The heat of the revolution continues to spread to many other countries in the Middle East, specifically the nation of Syria as we speak. The scripture teaches that there are three fundamental truths we must be willing to heed, less we also stumble and are shakin’ as individuals. 2 Peter 3:10 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the words that are in it will be burned up.” The lesson is that no government or person, no matter how powerful they are, has the power to remain. The world is changing as it resolves. As you well know, the shakin’ of the world’s power is nothing new to history. Matthew 21:42 confirms Jesus as the foundation that cannot be shakin’. Matthew 21:42 “Then

Jesus asked them, ‘Didn’t you ever read this in the scriptures? The stone rejected by the builders has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous to see.’ 44 Anyone who stumbles over that stone will be broken to pieces, and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.” This present world and government will someday pass away. We have to put our hope and trust in someone who will remain forever. Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will remain forever.” What this scripture means is that one of only three things that I can come up with are going to last forever. The first eternal investment would be God himself. Hebrews 13:8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” The second eternal investment would be God’s Word, Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will remain forever.” He said my Word will remain forever. The third eternal investment would be the soul of man. Are the most important investments that you make eternal or temporal? The temporal things are pick-ups, trailers, horses, houses, boats, you fill in the blank. All of these are fun, but temporary. The shakin’ that happens in our lives are wake up calls for us to understand and take inventory of where our values actually are. The shaking happens in our relationships, our faith, our businesses, our character and our friends so we can realize what we value and who we value in our lives. GOD, His WORD, and PEOPLE are the only things that will last forever. Matthew 16:26 “And how do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul in the process?
