ALSO INSIDE:

The first four strand calf rope with a core, the Striker is the most consistent calf rope available. It is constructed of a special synthetic, industrial strength polyester that will not stretch, giving it a longer life and more consistency. The four strands give the Striker a smoother, faster feel than a polygrass. The core stabilizes the Striker, allowing it to rebound to its natural state. Precise and consistant, every time.

Jones Navigates Path to Nampa Pay Window K.C. Jones may have to train a little harder to get ready to compete and the soreness of a muscle strain may not subside as quickly as it once did. Still, there are advantages to being 42 and having the experience of 18 ProRodeo seasons under your belt. Jones had to call on just about every one of his veteran moves to earn the Snake River Stampede steer wrestling title July 20, a performance that depended as much on logistics and planning as it did on his performance in the dirt of The Idaho Center. The short version is that Jones flew into town from California on a charter jet, caught a ride in from the airport, won the final round in 4.0 seconds and took the three-head average by a halfsecond over world standings leader Casey Martin. But it wasn’t as straightforward or calm as all that sounds. Not nearly. “The rodeo (in Salinas, Calif.) was running a little late,” Jones said, “and we didn’t finish bulldogging until 4:15 (p.m.). When you charter one of those things, they go when you want them to, but we were running out of time. One of the pilots – we had two of them – said it would be 7:45 before we touched down. That was going to put us in real danger of missing the perf. “So, I called (rodeo secretary) Sunni Deb (Backstrom) from the plane and she was able to tell me there was a full field in the bareback riding and the grand entry was going to be a little bit longer than usual. So, there was a chance. Then I called (fellow

competitor) Tyler Waguespack to ask him to warm up our little black mare (Smoker) that we had left there, so she’d be ready to ride.” A hurried drive from the airport got Jones to the rodeo grounds less than 30 minutes before he was to compete and everything went according to plan. Jones had 10-year-old Smoker, the Jud Little horse who Jones has trained since she was 4 years old and who he rode at last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, waiting in Nampa and had Bumble Bee and Tebow waiting for him at other stops on the rodeo road this weekend. “I’m real fortunate,” Jones said. “Great steer wrestling horses are freaks; they are so hard to come by. It seems like it’s taken me 20 years to get this kind of horsepower. “Smoker is just my little girlfriend. She does so great for me.” This was Jones’ third big win this month, following Cowboy Christmas titles in Livingston, Mont., and Oakley City, Utah. He’s gone from 29th in the world standings on June 10 to 10th after the Fourth of July week (aka Cowboy Christmas) and is now third. That would seem to make it a very likely bet that Jones will again be on the outside AND the inside of ProFantasy Rodeo (the official fantasy rodeo game of the Wrangler NFR) for the seventh time since Jones and his buddy – La Junta, Colo., stock contractor Jace Honey – created the game back in 2002. “I don’t think anybody who has ever won the game has had me on their roster,” Jones said. “Just tell people that if they want me to do good, they shouldn’t

draft me. I don’t need the extra pressure. If I miss one, I have people walking up to me and saying, ‘Oh, man, you’re killing me (in the game).’ I just say, ‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to’ …”

ProRodeoLive Expands Its Audience On Rural Radio ProRodeoLive.com and Rural Radio have partnered to provide unprecedented broadcast coverage of major PRCA rodeos, including the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the San Antonio Stock Show and the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo. Since 2008, Steve Kenyon’s ProRodeoLive has exclusively owned the radio and Internet rights to produce the WNFR and the PRCA’s other top championship events. These will now be available to a greatly expanded audience via the partnership with Rural Radio, the recently launched Agribusiness and Western Lifestyle channel 80 on SiriusXM satellite radio. ProRodeoLive and Rural Rodeo will present live coverage of the championship round of the legendary Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo, beginning at 2 p.m. (ET) July 28. It will be anchored by Kenyon, the 2010 recipient of the PRCA Excellence in Broadcasting Award, with analysis by 1987 NFR saddle bronc riding average champion Butch Knowles and interviews by former Miss Rodeo Idaho and Miss Rodeo America Runner-up Freya Walton. “Rural Media Group is spearheading a new direction for rodeo and Western sports and I’m proud to say that ProRodeoLive is part of this amazing tidal wave of progress,” Kenyon said. “This is a big deal for our industry.” LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5

29th Annual World Championship Junior Calf Roping

F

12 and Under Tie-Down Champion, Dawson Cantu

or 29 years the Roy Cooper Junior World Championship Calf Roping has been one that junior calf roping and breakaway roping competitors always look forward to. This year’s 29th Annual event was once again the highlight for many of the toughest young competitors from across the country who came out to see who is the best of the best. The calf ropers were shaking out loops and making lightning fast runs to attempt to take home their part of the cash and prizes. North Texas Premier Equine Facility, Diamond T Arena in Denton, Texas was again the host for the event. Roy Cooper’s World Championship Jr. Calf Roping is designed specifically for juniors and features six different divisions of competition in this once-a-year event. The events included 12 and Under - Boys and Girls Breakaway, 12 and Under Tie Down Roping, 13 to 15 Girls Breakaway, 13 to 15 - Boys Tie Down Roping, 19 and Under Girls Breakaway and the 19 and Under Boys Tie Down World Champion Jr. Calf Roping. The event dates were July 4th through 6th and each day started at 9 a.m. and consisted of both calf

roping and breakaway action in 5 divisions that included three full go rounds and a top 10 short round that would eventually determine the champions on a total of 4-head of cattle. The big event of the weekend was the 19 and Under World Championship Junior Calf Roping that took place on Saturday. This roping consisted of a 3-head roping with the top 12 coming back to Elimination Rounds where the 2 slowest ropers were eliminated in each round. That meant the final two contestants in this roping roped a total of 9 calves. The crowd was at the edge of their seat for the final round between Reid Zapalac and Marcus Theriot. This was Marcus’s first year in this age group after winning the 13-15 Boys Tie Down Championship last year. Marcus was hoping to make it two in a row, but when the round ended it was Reid Zapalac as the 2013 Roy Cooper’s World 13-15 Boys Tie Down Champion, Raeben Meyer

Teaching Your Kids To Fish

T

he other day Jennifer posted a photo on our STS Ranch Wear Facebook page of Stone holding a calf’s legs while we were branding. On the photo was this saying: “Don’t handicap your kids by making their life easy.” That one post was viewed over 100,000 times and shared 25,000 times. I don’t think for a minute it’s easy to raise kids today. You can

something himself. No, he won’t keep your kids safe enough for be as quick, or do it as well as you them to reach adulthood, but are would. That’s not the point. If you we teaching them good life don’t give him the opportunity to lessons? The saying goes, ‘Give a do a chore or complete a job or man a fish and feed him for a day. task he’s been given, you’re Teach a man to fish and you feed robbing him of the opportunity to him for a lifetime.’ be proud of himself. It’s far easier, and quicker, to With technology today, almost do something for your kid than to CR VSA IN HOUSE PROOF every kid you CRX’D see is playing on a let him do it himself. I’m guilty of phone, ipad, or some other this. It’s a real challenge to slow electronic device. It’s fun and can down and let your child do

challenging these days and you have to have a game plan. You can’t do anything successfully without one. It’s easier at home to let my boys do things for themselves. My dad was really

entertainment them for hours. Some of those hours would be time better spent learning some responsibility or spending time with family. We want so much for our children that we tend to hand them nice things without teaching them the value or making them earn it. Do you think a 13-yearold that’s riding a $5,000 to $10,000 horse really understands what a nice horse he has? Not likely. I can’t even imagine trying to raise kids in the city. Folks in the country or on ranches have better opportunities to teach their kids how to earn the things P/U W CH VSA they want. I’ve mostly been home for the last couple of years and I’ve enjoyed spending that time with my family. Raising kids is

good at letting me figure things IN HOUSE PROOF out. It’s hard to believeCRX’D I was driving a tractor when I was Stone’s age. Since we’ve been rodeoing this summer I find it way too easy to

‘hand my kids a fish’ rather than letting them fish. The nature of rodeo is to hurry from one to the next and time is a luxury we don’t always have. No matter where you live, or what you do for a living, today you have to compete for your children’s attention. This generation who is raising kids now has a big challenge. We have to teach them the value of a dollar. We have to teach them how to work for what they want. We have to let them learn how to do things, and sometimes fail, rather than do it for them. As an adult, your child will be more likely to thank you for teaching the value of hard work than for letting him lay in front of the television. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

The American Dream

A

bout 350 years ago a shipload of travelers landed on the northeast coast of America. The first year they established a town site. The next year they elected a town government. The third year the town government planned to build a road five miles westward into the wilderness. In the fourth year the people tried to impeach their town government because they thought it was a waste of public funds to build a road five miles westward into a wilderness. Who needed to go there anyway?

Here were people who had the vision to see three thousand miles across an ocean and overcome great hardships to get there. But in just a few years they were not able to see even five miles out of town. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish. But happy is he who keeps the law.” Vision is the ability to see. Helen Keller made a profound statement when she said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight, but no vision.” Our belief system is what dictates our vision to ourselves. Someone said if you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything. Many times our vision falls short of what God created us to be. When we buy into the belief system that we evolved from monkeys, it brings expectations much lower than God intended them to be. We in our culture today have assumed the arrogance that we know better than God when it comes to defining marriage or defining the value of a baby in the womb of its mother. In our arrogance we truly believe that it is acceptable to God, and to everyone else, if we continually evolve with our thinking. The scripture says, “The truth will set you free.” Very few people in our nation know the truth of God’s Word and because of that we tend to reason among ourselves and reevaluate God’s value system. We tend to believe that God

will change His mind if we change our mind. God is not a puppet, nor does He evolve with the truth. Our president made the statement that he was evolving on his view on the definition of marriage. Our country is charting new water with our culture’s perpetual disobedience to God’s Word. America will pay and because we are American, we will pay. I choose to say along with Joshua of the Old Testament, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” My question to you today is - “What is your dream for America?” “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14, NIV)

PRACTICE WITH THE PROS

From the Archives PRO TIP NO. 5: Preparing Your Mind and Mental Game The biggest set back most calf ropers run into is their own mind. The mental game is a huge important part of calf roping and rodeo. If you can learn to control your mind, it will take you far in the sport of calf roping. Before you go to a roping or a rodeo, you must prepare your horse, yourself and your mind. For example, if you are going to a three head average roping, you don’t want to rope everything fast or do anything to make your horse short, as he will shorten up every calf at the roping anyway. So you must prepare him, and in the same way you must prepare your mind. Don’t just run a million calves, with your mind not focused on what you want and what you need out of every run. “Score, ride, rope, and finish,” says PRCA Tie-Down roper, Josh Peek. Do everything the same when training and preparing your mind, just like you would when training a colt. Some people will play games in their head while at the practice pen, to simulate a rodeo or short go at

a roping to add pressure to a normally relaxed setting. This is a great way to prepare your mental game. Practicing correctly in the practice pen will let your muscle memory react at the rodeo. Making sure you have that

confidence, knowing you can make that run when you back into the box allows for no doubt and the muscle memory will take over. Remember, “Practice to Win” Colter Sellers
