The first four strand calf rope with a core, the Striker is the most consistent calf rope available. It is constructed of a special synthetic, industrial strength polyester that will not stretch, giving it a longer life and more consistency. The four strands give the Striker a smoother, faster feel than a polygrass. The core stabilizes the Striker, allowing it to rebound to its natural state. Precise and consistant, every time.

News And Notes From The Rodeo Trail
Schneeberger Captures Historic Win in Prairie Circuit There aren’t many ropers, past or present, who can claim they broke a record once held by Roy Cooper. Jerome Schneeberger can now say he has done just that. The Ponca City, Okla., tie-down roper clinched his eighth Prairie Circuit year-end championship Oct. 19 at the Chisholm Trail Ram Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo. By virtue of a dominant regular season, Schneeberger essentially had the year-end title wrapped up when he arrived in Duncan, but put a decisive stamp on his season by finishing third in the average behind Caddo Lewallen and Ryan Bothum. The win snapped a tie between Schneeberger and Cooper – a man with eight world championship buckles – for the most year-end tie-down roping titles in the circuit’s history. “I always looked up to Roy, and he was a hero of mine growing up,” Schneeberger said. “It’s really neat just to be in the same class with him in the circuit.” Schneeberger is an accomplished tie-down roper himself, having gone to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo 11 times, including winning the 2001 NFR average championship. However, the 37-year-old’s last trip to Las Vegas came in 2010, and at the moment he’s content to stay close to home and be a circuit cowboy. “There are a lot of good rodeos in our circuit, and they help to boost you up in the standings,” said Schneeberger, who finished 37th in the 2013 world standings. “I go to the winter rodeos, I just don’t have the motivation to keep rodeoing and fighting through it all year long. If you don’t make the Finals
it hurts, and I have a family to support, so I stay close to home and work.” Contributing to his want to be closer to home are his four sons. Jaden, 10; Jace, 9; Jaret, 5, and Jaxton, 1, have made things much more interesting around the house for Schneeberger and wife Haley – a PRCA secretary. “I’m going to enjoy my family and my boys are starting to rope and play sports, so I want to be around for that,” he said. “I work for my cousin’s construction company; we do a little bit of everything. I’m not very good at it, but I put in my time. The nice thing about working for family is if I won a bunch of money during the winter run I could take off for a bit.” As for the immediate future, Schneeberger is looking forward to his eighth trip to the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo, in nearby Oklahoma City. He’s come close, but never had the ultimate success in his previous seven trips to the RNCFR. “I’ve never won it before, and it sure is one I’d like to win,” he said. “It’s close to home, so friends and family will be there. I’m not a young pup anymore, but this won’t be my last circuit finals.”
Jerome Schneeberger finished third in the average to clinch his record-setting eighth Prairie Circuit year-end tie-down roping title.
Dippin Tahonta, the PRCA Bull of the Year in both 2003 and 2004, passed away the weekend of Oct. 12. The bull was unridden in 50-plus outs over those two years and was the Ram Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo Bull of the Year in 2003. Dippin Tahonta, a 1,900-pound gray bull, was sired by Tahontas Back out of a Hutsell Rodeo Bulls cow. Clark McEntire, father of country music star Reba McEntire and a three-time world champion steer roper (1957-58, 1961), was awarded the inaugural Living Legend Award on behalf of the Chisholm Trail Ram Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo. The Living Legend Award was created to honor someone who has made a significant contribution to the rodeo world. McEntire, 85, won the Pendleton Round-up four times and was an inaugural member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979. The 24th Casey Tibbs Foundation Tribute Dinner in Fort Pierre will be held Nov. 2 at the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center. The tribute dinner is held to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of South Dakota cowboys, cowgirls, families and animals. The honorees have their photos and biographies added to the Rodeo Center’s “Wall of Fame” each year. Advance purchase of tickets is required and seating is limited to 250. For tickets information, contact the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center at 605.494.1094 or visit www.caseytibbs.com. Oklahoma bull rider Cord McCoy announced his retirement on Oct. 18. McCoy, 33, qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 2005. McCoy and his older brother, Jet, once competed in The Amazing Race on CBS-TV. “It’s time to hang up the bull rope,” McCoy said. He will still be active in the sport, however, as he raises bucking bulls on his ranch near Tupelo, Okla. LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5

Doug Scott, of Early, TX, won the average of the World Finals with a 64.75 on five head. Doug and his good bay horse ran every calf almost to the same spot in the arena every time, to secure the victory. Doug placed in one round on the way to the average win to take home $2,175. Stephen Perry, out of Freeport, TX, never placed in a round, but his consistency paid off in the end. With a 63.25 on five calves, Stephen took the average victory and the World title of the OO. Stephen won $1,815 for his efforts. It is great to see a roper that supports calf ropings everywhere

he USCRA World Finals was the showcase roping of the Finals this year in Stephenville, TX. Fifteen of the top ropers in each division put up $500 entry fees to rope at over $3,000 in added money in each division. The format was three full rounds with the top five in the average advancing to two more rounds to determine the World Champion. The added money, the format, and the will to be a World Champion made it an exciting roping to watch. The EE was the first division to crown a World Champion. Out of Mansfield, TX, Cody Wilkersen, was crowned the World Champion with $5,215 won. Cody won money in two rounds and won third in the average to edge out Doug Scott by $210. His total earnings for the finals was $2,050.

Finals come out on top. The sport of calf roping needs more ropers like Stephen. Hats off to you, pardner! The OO-select saw an outstanding performance by a young roper who has obviously been working on his skills. Tanner Green, out of Cotulla, TX, placed in two rounds on his way to the average victory and the World title. For Tanner, the take home pay was $2,770. OO World Champion, Stephen Perry, had a hand in this roping also, by letting Tanner ride his horses. Good move by both ropers. The #1 roping was the roping that supplied us with the most excitement, which I will explain a

little later. Out of Stephenville, TX, Martin Poindexter, made some outstanding runs on his way to the #1 World Title. Martin placed in two rounds and won second in the average. One calf took Martin to the back end of the arena, but his hustle kept him in the roping and paid off to the tune of $2,210. The last calf of the world finals supplied enough excitement for the whole day. Rick McLemore, of

At some point they opportunity to stretch and grow. succumbed and became a victim;
or they adapted, and overcame this obstacle. An obstacle does not have to be a hindrance. An obstacle can be an opportunity to challenge yourself. Sometimes that means doing things that are unconventional and against tradition. My dad doesn’t claim to be the first guy to get off his calf horse on the right. But he is the first guy to do it at the NFR. At the time, the consensus was that it would ruin your horse if you got off on the right. I heard a reporter ask my dad why he did it when everyone said it would make his horse duck and ruin him. My dad answered, “Well, my horse wasn’t worth much anyway.” I love that answer. The ability to overcome, and even break tradition is a mindset. Start by challenging yourself with little things. Before you can accomplish great things, you have to accomplish small things. Even in the small things don’t take
defeat lightly. Learn from it and use it to your advantage. Thinking outside the box is how groundbreaking ideas are born. Everything we now consider as traditional or normal was once an idea that was “outside the box.” Don’t ever let someone talk you out of something you really want. When you are discouraged and being told you can’t do or achieve something, don’t believe it for one minute. I want to give a shout-out to my nephew, Stetson Vest, for making the NFR this year. This is the fourth year of professional rodeo for him, and it amazes me and makes me proud of how he’s handled himself. I don’t know many who would have stayed as positive and stayed hooked like he has. Congratulations Stetson! During the NFR, Jennifer and I will be doing a pre-game show at the MGM called The Draw. It will be held in the Hollywood
Theater where they show the live telecast of the rodeo. We will have a list of stock drawn for the rodeo and talk about our picks for the night. We will also have special guests and prior world champions. I expect this will be the most fun I’ve ever had during the NFR. After the rodeo you can also catch the Gold Buckle Zone, also held at the MGM. The show is free and we would love for everyone to come out. Till next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

Dangerous Intersections
T
hroughout life we find ourselves at intersections where the decision to make the correct turn can affect us for the rest of our lives. Many times at those intersections we depend upon our reasoning to give us direction. Some of those decisions whether career, health or relationship-based, can be extremely crucial to our success. Have you ever made a bad decision at the intersections of life and wished many times over that you could relive that decision? Proverbs 3:5-6 says “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Essentially, what God is saying is that He knows you better than you know yourself. Because of that knowledge He is actually better equipped in His infinite knowledge to make decisions for us than we are to make for ourselves. There have been times in my life that I failed to acknowledge God in the intersections of life. Because of my ignorance, I pulled out onto the road and got run over. Please notice in this scripture it says to acknowledge Him in “all” our ways. This means as our Heavenly Father, He is not only interested in the big things, He is also interested in the seemingly mundane things of life. Back when my son was in high school, he qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo. We borrowed a 40-foot horse trailer with living quarters to go to Farmington, New Mexico. We live at the end of a road where you have to cross over the railroad tracks to get to our place. As we were crossing the tracks, that brand new

40-foot horse trailer got high-centered and we could not back up or go forward. I don’t have to tell you the kind of fear that I felt at that time of helplessness. We contacted the railroad office and had all trains stopped. And with God’s help and the help of some good friends, we got the horse trailer safely removed from the railroad crossing. At the intersections of life there will be times when you feel helpless about making the right decision. That’s when I strongly encourage you to acknowledge the One who has all knowledge - including better knowledge of your situation than you have yourself. I have decided in my life that I need God’s knowledge and wisdom in every decision that I make. When I fail to acknowledge Him, inevitably wrong decisions are repeated. God Bless!

PRACTICE WITH THE PROS Tips For The Practice Pen
T
racking calves around the arena, especially if tracking a training device such as the Tuf Kaf, it is important to keep position even when coming around a corner while tracking. Not letting my horse cut the circle will help him understand where to be when we are going straight. The depth of your position may vary from roper to roper. It should be a comfortable distance to throw your rope to the target, not a reach. Some horses may need to be ridden more aggressively after a few runs to help keep them close enough to
the calf, they will be in line but not in position. With horses that have this tendency to be short, you’ve got to track up and keep them in there while roping in the practice pen. Very few quick shots, otherwise you’ll have a very short horse. Some horses are real free running horses to calves, those you can rope quicker on more often without the worry of getting them short. Swing to your target; make sure your swing comes forward to your target (the calf) in every swing. This will help your rope travel to your calf when you deliver. I want my swing to be in line with
my right shoulder, my horse’s right shoulder and my calf’s right shoulder as my horse’s position should be straight behind the calf. A great way to practice this is with a realistic training system such as the Tuf Kaf. It prepares you and your horse for the real competition. Remember, “Practice to Win.” P.S.
