Bennett Makes Mad Dash for Wrangler NFR Bid Caleb Bennett set his goals so high for the week, “I wanted to make so much money I’d move into the top 10” - that he figured even if he fell a little short, he’d still find himself in position to earn a spot in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Given that Bennett was 18th in the bareback riding world standings at the start of the week and $14,135 away from 10th, it was never a realistic goal. Still, it’s hard to argue with the strategy or the outcome. Over the span of four days, the Morgan, Utah, native made four rides and earned four checks (never finishing lower than third) and ended up with total prize money of $8,269 - the highest total for the week by any PRCA cowboy. “It was a great weekend and exactly what I needed,” Bennett said. “I drew a bunch of good horses and I just tried to capitalize on that. I’m pretty wide-eyed about (the outcome), but now I’ve got a little more pressure on me because I’ve got to hold that thought for one more week.” The cruel irony of this little drama is that Bennett’s move into the 15th spot in the world standings came at the expense of his friends and traveling partners, R.C. Landingham and Clint Laye. The three of them rolled into Pasadena, Texas, last Wednesday with Landingham 15th, Laye 17th and Bennett 18th. Now it’s Bennett who is 15th, with Landingham 16th and Laye trailing Seth Hardwick in 18th. The margin from 15th to Winn Ratliff in 19th is $7,375 as the Bennett truck enters the final week of the regular season with trips to Stephenville, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; and San Bernardino, Calif. “We’ve been battling it out for the last couple of weeks,” Bennett said. “We’re all going after the same thing. I think it’s been a little hard for R.C. because he’s never been in

this position and I feel like he’s stressing too much. He’s tough on himself when he’s unhappy with his performance.” Bennett knows the feeling. He finished 17th in the world standings in 2008 and in retrospect feels like he was his own worst enemy coming down the home stretch of the regular season that year. “I put too much pressure on myself,” Bennett said. “I was too focused and too tense. I forgot to have fun. I got a late start to this season because of elbow surgery and once I came back, I just decided to find a way to manage to keep smiling and having fun every time I nodded my head. “I’ve tried to keep that approach all season.” There’s no question that this last week was fun. Big-time fun. Bennett started the week by finishing second at the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo, then tied for first place with Hardwick at the Amarillo (Texas) Tri-State Fair & Rodeo, finished third at the New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo in Albuquerque, and second at the Bowman County (N.D.) Pro Rodeo. That’s 332 points on four head, an average of 83 points per ride. Bennett was one of four men who took a spot in the top 15 with their earnings from this past week, being joined by saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss, tie-down roper Randall Carlisle and team roping heeler Jake Long. And while Bennett earned the most and was the most efficient, nobody worked any harder for it than DeMoss. A four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier, DeMoss collected checks in all six rodeos in which he competed. He shared the win in Amarillo with Taos Muncy and Jacobs Crawley, and won titles outright in Texarkana, Ark., and Shawnee on Delaware, Pa., finishing with total earnings of $7,253 to bump Canadian Tyrel Larsen out of the 15th spot. DeMoss entered the week $1,461 out of 15th and after winning at

Shawnee on Delaware Sunday his lead was $5,545. His reward? He got to spend the night sleeping in a chair at the Philadelphia airport. “Oh my gosh, I’m tired,” DeMoss said, “pretty much delirious. This all started with a 35-hour drive from Pendleton (Ore.) to Pasadena (Texas) last week with my wife, Hallie, and a couple of bronc riders. After I finished in Pasadena, Hallie and I drove six hours home so I could see my daughter (Dixie) for the first time in 2½ months. Then Hallie, Dixie and my son, Gavin, came with me to Texarkana, Ark., for the day. I went on to Harrison, Ark., and then drove all night to compete in Albuquerque. “Amarillo was next, and after that I drove over to Dallas for a 6:30 a.m. flight to Philly and the rodeo in Shawnee on Delaware. It was about the most beautiful place you’d ever want to see ... and I won. But, good Lord, am I tired. And I’m back on the road again on Wednesday.” Leaving nothing to chance, “because the NFR is so important to our livelihood,” DeMoss said, he is scheduled to compete in New Braunfels, Texas, on Thursday, Poway, Calif., on Friday, Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, Stephenville, Texas, on Sunday and Checotah, Okla., on Monday - the final day and the final rodeo of the 2013 season. It will bring DeMoss’ season total to 98 rodeos. The team roping race - especially on the heeling side is wildly unpredictable. Long and partner Travis Tryan shared first place in Albuquerque and earned another check in Pasadena to allow Long to move into 15th spot; Tryan was already in 15th place among headers. The margin between Clay O’Brien Cooper, who is 14th among team roping heelers, and Tommy Zuniga in 17th place is just $1,541. Reigning World Champion Team Roper Chad Masters is 18th in the heading standings, $7,633 behind Travis Tryan in 15th place. Barring a miracle finish, Masters, who missed several months of the season due to injury, will be the only world champion who will not be eligible to defend his gold buckle at the WNFR in Las Vegas. Lone Star Cowboy Church Hosts First Ever Series Finals Calf Roping Finals were held Labor Day weekend on Monday, September 2 at the Lone Star arena in Montgomery, Texas. Each Average winner received a Tod Slone Trophy saddle. Every qualifying participant had the opportunity to win a W-W 2-horse Bryce Bargaineer SxS horse trailer with tack compartment and feed manger. To qualify, ropers had to attend 4 of the 6 events in the series, which began back in

Finishing Strong

ere we are in the last week of the rodeo season, and one of the most important weeks to those guys who are close to the bubble in the world standings. Now, more than ever, it is important to finish strong. Most great athletes want to be known as “finishers.” Whether its sports or life, it’s fairly easy to get started at anything. Somewhere along the way it becomes hard and a chore and for one of a million reasons, they don’t finish. We need to instill in our kids and ourselves, the importance of finishing strong. There are so many times I’ll start a little project that should just take a few hours. The next thing I know I’ve uncovered something else

that needs to be taken care of and it becomes a much bigger job. Before I realize it it’s midnight, I’m overloaded and still not done. At this point I can call it good, go to bed and finish the next day, or I can buckle down and complete the project. I will always choose to finish what I’ve started. I want to know myself as a strong finisher. Before you can be faithful in a lot, you have to be faithful in little things. If you finish the little things, there’s no doubt you can finish the big things. It’s easy and exciting to have a good idea and get it started. But once you realize it’s more work than fun, do you push on and see it through to the end? In college I had a professor in the Ag department that said most people get in the ranching business for the romance of it. I’ve

never forgotten that and now when we are in the middle of a truly horrible chore on our ranch, I’ll say, “This is all about the romance now!” We get a big laugh out of it because it’s usually about the time when you’re ready to stomp, cuss, or tear something up. This week my nephews, Stetson and Cliff, need to finish strong to secure a spot in the top fifteen. I’ve entered some rodeos so I can be there with them. Maybe the best I can offer is to let them ride my horse, or push their calf, but I want to be there to support them. A whole season, or career, has come down to one calf in many cases. If you push yourself to finish stronger than you started – whether it’s cleaning the barn, working out, or any other job, you will learn a lot about yourself. You will discover you are capable of much more than you dreamed of. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

Perception Is Everything

came to the realization in the past couple of weeks that how I perceive a situation is how I respond to it. In other words, if I know that a person has a problem with me, I will be cautious with my conversation to that person. By the same token, if a horse has bucked me off in the recent past, being an old guy, I am a lot more nervous when I get back on that horse. The scripture says that when I ask God for forgiveness that my sin is cast as far as the east is from the west. It is difficult for me to perceive the distance between the east and the west. I don’t have a great memory, but I have a tendency to remember the many times that I have transgressed against God since I have made the decision to follow Him. I heard a statement last week that, “How we see God will determine how we respond to Him.” The God I serve is all knowing, all-powerful and is present everywhere. It is hard for me to comprehend that magnitude of power. The fact that God created the Heavens and the earth, that He created man and gave man dominion over the animals. That is the God that I serve. In recent weeks I have been challenged to see the magnitude and power of God and to respond to Him for who He really is. Let’s not live our lives with fear of approaching an all-powerful God because the greatest, most powerful attribute of God is love. For God so loved you, that He gave His Son so that you could have eternal life. How you see God will determine how you respond to Him.
