THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when five strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite polygrass and the strength and stability that only Coretech can give, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time…
Deadly accurate.

Roping a Great Start The USCRA kicked off the 2013 season with loads of new ideas and ropers jumped at the chance to put these changes to use. In return, the first roping of the season, held at the LCSP Arena in Giddings, Texas was the biggest season-starter roping the USCRA has seen. You can bet the changes coming out of the USCRA are set to stay as they offer ropers better chances and more ways to load up on payouts. The ropers who attended the first 2013 season roping were the first to inherit the fivesecond instead of ten-second penalty for a broken barrier. This seemed to keep more ropers in the game and offer more competition throughout all of the roping division. The rule change that affected a calf coming untied seemed to help ropers at the event as well. Instead of a no-time, a fivesecond penalty was given to the ropers whose calf got up before the 6-second time limit. Although this was a time increase to those who had the calf kick loose, at least they were still in the hunt for round money and the average payouts instead of heading to the trailer to head home. Finally, the biggest and probably the most appreciative addition to the USCRA rules for 2013 included the APS (Advanced Pay-off System). This new idea from the USCRA opened the door for ropers who make the short round a guaranteed winner. Evening out the payout, the USCRA offers every roper in the short-round
at least their entry fee back. This was welcomed by many ropers in Giddings and will be continued throughout the 2013 season. The changes made for the 2013 season helped make the first roping of the season very successful. With a great start, you can bet the USCRA will continue to roll through the season with high intensity and continue to give ropers a chance to win more and more money! You can also check out the new USCRA World Standings. This new concept will help determine the 2013 champions at the end of the season. Be sure to enter up, win and give yourself a chance to be among those going for the championships this season!

The #1 roping action was tough and Jordan should be proud to be the one who finished on top of a slew of great ropers. The #2 Roping was quite a spectacle of calf roping talent. From start to finish, the action was smoking hot and the runs were on fire. Eightsecond runs were the norm of the event and several had a shot at the title as the short round came into view. his month we are talking about the dismount during a calf roping run. Though I didn’t start roping competitively until I was sixteen, I grew up riding and roping on our ranch. Everyone in the family was involved when it came to working cattle: my CRX’Dbrother and sisters, my dad, granddad and me. Now and then I was allowed to ride one of the good horses and when I was about ten or twelve I came up with a game of sorts to entertain myself. I would be in a big pasture, where I wouldn’t get caught, get my horse into a good lope, and then get off on the right side while he was running. Soon, this wasn’t quite exciting enough. One horse I rode would jump small mesquite bushes. So we would be loping along pretty fast and while he was in mid-air, jumping the bush, I would get off and run beside him. He would stop and I would get back on and do it again. I had no idea what I was doing. I was just a kid having fun. Consequently, getting off my calf horse has always been very easy for me. Some kids roped the dummy, or tied a lot and that would be their specialty when they got older. My specialty was getting off because I had been doing it for years and it is second nature for me. When I started roping calves I could get off while my horse was running full speed. I’ve had to work at not getting off too soon. For a smooth dismount it’s important for your horse’s performance that you have good balance. If you lean out too wide or to the side, you can throw his balance off where he has to brace himself. This can cause him to step to the left to compensate for your weight. For the same reasons, you don’t want to get off too far behind or to the front. It’s a finesse move that involves good timing and balance. You need to be in time with your horse. Your right knee is bent and your left leg needs to swipe over the cantle. Keep your right foot straight, pointing towards the
calf. Usually when your body is in the stirrup, your foot turns. It takes some effort to keep it straight and out of your horse’s stomach and shoulder. As you dismount, it’s important to get off using the saddle horn and not the bridle reins. This is one of the most common errors made by calf ropers. Many people use the reins for balance without realizing it. Horse trainers spend a
lot of time making horses nice and broke and very sensitive. This is quickly undone when the reins end up supporting body weight. The pressure that should be put on bridle reins can be measured in ounces but using them for balance involves hundreds of ounces of pressure. Consequently, not only is it bad for your horse and his confidence, it will end up costing you time and money. When you
pull his front end off the ground, even unintentionally, it throws everything out of whack. If you’re going to Las Vegas this year for the NFR, I will be at the NRS trade show at the MGM each morning at 9:30 a.m. I invite you all to come and would love for you to send me some topics you would like me to talk about. Please email them to me at strant@aol.com.
Trusting God, The Test of Life
P
salms 149 says, “The Lord takes pleasure in His people.” When my kids were little I would stand them up on the counter in the kitchen and ask them to jump to me. At first I had to be like two feet away from them before they would jump. They were actually taught to trust me as I moved away until the point they would jump into my arms at any distance that I chose. The Bible says that God is our Heavenly Father. I heard someone say one day, “Any one can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a daddy.” The term “Abba Father” means daddy father. In other words, God is as approachable as a loving earthly father. Proverbs 3:5&6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Many times in the world we live in our nature seems to want to lean on our own understanding rather than to lean on God’s ultimate all-knowing wisdom. The challenge we all have is worshipping God in the good times as well as the hard times. Many people pray when they are having problems, it seems as though it is easier to call upon God when we are having problems than it is when things are going well. I want to go through an acrostic with you in this article that talks about trust.
T – Tell God exactly how you feel. Prayer is one of the greatest gifts that God has given us to have relationship with Him. Prayer is a part of worship. Communicating with God is nothing less than talking to Him about what is happening in your life and letting Him speak back to you with that still small voice in your heart. R – Refuse to become bitter. Bitterness is simply saying, “I don’t trust God.” Bitterness is saying, “I don’t get the picture.” Bitterness is an unforgiving choice that many make in relationships with people and God. Being bitter is like you drinking poison and hoping the person that you are angry at dies from it. U – Unite with others in worship. I am completely convinced the reason many people refuse to go to church is because they really don’t want anyone, including God, to tell them how to live their lives. We must understand God will never impose His will on us. We must live for God because we want to and worship with other believers in a church setting simply for accountability purposes. That tends to go against the grain of most earthlyminded people. S – Surrender. Surrender your future to God. An old song titled, “I Surrender All” says, “All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give, I will ever love and trust Him, in His presence daily live.” When you make the choice to surrender all that, my friend, is when you will experience true
worship and true peace. T – Trust. We must be willing to trust Christ with every detail of our life, our business life, our financial life, our spiritual life, our sports life, and our social life. Jesus says, By trusting Me, you will be unshakable and assured. The world we live in continues to be shaken. There is only one foundation that will last for eternity and that is God and His Word. Regardless of what we’ve been taught, unless it aligns with God’s Word it will eventually crumble. The scripture says, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My Word will last forever.” Is your trust in things that fade away with time or something that is perpetual and eternal? I set before you life and death, choose life. PRACTICE WITH THE PROS
Is the Economy Getting in the Way of Your Calf Roping? SS Roping has found a way to own fewer calves and feed less hay. Using the Tuf Kaf calf roping training system is the answer. The Tuf Kaf is being used by professional / amateur ropers and horse trainers of all ages. The Tuf Kaf has been proven to be advantageous and economical in the practice arena. Up until now, the training systems have been for team ropers, but the Tuf Kaf is the one on the market that replicates a realistic calf for calf ropers and breakaway ropers. It is important to practice roping and tying from your horse, but your ground work is VSA equally important. This Tuf Kaf training system is the best calf roping training system on the market. You can flank and tie from the chute or just tie it on
the ground. You can even put it on its belly and ground rope it. No need to tear up an expensive bale of hay to practice roping. This is just the beginning of what you can do with it: you can track it and rope it from your horse, run down the rope, daylight, flank and tie, and you can use it to tune your horse with. No more wasting and choking out your good calves while trying to train or tune up your calf horse. The Tuf Kaf takes the abuse over and over again and always stays “fresh.” The Tuf Kaf can also be used when training young horses; that way you have IN HOUSE PROOF CRX’D complete control over the run before you start the horse on live calves. With this training device, you control what kind of calf run scenarios you need to practice.
“It’s just as important to keep your horse tuned and working properly as it is keeping your roping skills tuned in. Everything is so much more controlled, planned and safe. This roping dummy will give you better practice runs, in less time, and less money spent on calves. I highly recommend it for all levels.” said endorsed user, PRCA calf roper, Josh Peek. It just makes cents. Pardon the pun, but in this economy, there is a definite place for calf roping training systems. I recommend taking a look at this realistic Tuf Kaf. I think you’ll agree it is by far the superior training device for all calf ropers and breakaway ropers. “Practice to Win” Casey Sellers SS Roping, llc Tuf Kaf www.ssroping.com

ovember is here and that means we are in the midst of the busiest time of year for rodeo and the individual sports related to it. The USCRA Finals wrapped up and results are in. It looks as though the USCRA pulled off a great event and tie-down ropers turned out in large numbers to enjoy the annual event. Lanham and the USCRA staff were pleased with the event and they are looking forward to the new season and implementing the changes for the new season. After talking with Lanham following the first roping of the 2013 season in Giddings, it looks as though ropers were excited about the new formats and modifications. To say the least, lots of ropers were at the event. The changes that included a shorted penalty for breaking the barrier and the penalty instead of the no-time if a calf kicked loose before the 6-second time limit helped ropers stay in the roping and have more chances to win. However, the biggest news was the
increased Average payout and the new APS format. The Advanced Pay-off System (APS) increased the pay out in the Average and every roper who made the short round was guaranteed at least their entry fee. Ropers who attended the Giddings roping seemed encouraged by the new format, making it one of the biggest, season-opener events the USCRA has ever had. The success of the event gave the USCRA a boost for 2013 and after speaking with Lanham, he is very excited about the season ahead and the chance to continue to offer these changes to ropers. As we move through November, it is hard not to get excited about the NFR. This year looks to be another exciting finish for the top rodeo competitors and the tie-down roping, especially, has an incredible field of competitors. I don’t think there is a guy in the top fifteen who won’t give an electric display of calf roping. The number one roper right now, Justin Mass is healthy, sitting and waiting patiently to pounce into the lead at the

NFR. Tuff Cooper is on fire and Cody Ohl, who was way out of the running half way through the season, has once again dazzled the circuit with lightning fast runs which has moved him into third place overall. The top fifteen ropers headed to Vegas are no doubt the best of the best and you can bet each night will be full of fast, exhilarating calf roping action. November also brings on the Holiday season and I hope all of you have a great Thanksgiving this month. I hope we all have a chance to give thanks for being able to do what we love inside the arena, enjoy the company of those who are closest to us and live in a country that continues to be proud and free. I know the past few years have been hard on many families across the country and I hope you join me in saying a prayer for the many families, friends and neighbors who may be struggling. We may not know them personally, or recognize their struggles, but as Americans we help one another, stand up for what is right and encourage each other to move ahead and continue to reach our dreams and our goals. Until next month, I wish you all the best of luck. Ryan Davis
