riefert Ranch Equipment is extremely proud to welcome Baxter Black to its family of Endorsees. Priefert will be partnering with Baxter to help bring his unique perspective and cowboy brand of humor to agriculturally related groups across the country, particularly those involved in the cattle industry. Described by the New York Times as “…probably the nation’s most successful living poet,” everything about Baxter is cowboy; his cartoonish mustache, his personality and his poetry. As a much respected character in our industry, Priefert felt Baxter was a natural fit. When asked for his thoughts about partnering with Priefert, Baxter replied, “You’re known by the company you keep. I found a friend in Priefert. It’s a third generation business that holds the values I think are what makes America great; God, country, family, hard work and caring about their neighbor. It’s gonna be a pleasure to be part of what they stand for.” Priefert is equally excited about the opportunity to work with Baxter. Jeff Rash, VP of Sales & Marketing had this to say, “Baxter Black is well known to those who enjoy the Western lifestyle and is a rare American treasure. I’ve watched and read Baxter’s material since I was a boy, and like many young aspiring cowboys from my generation, Baxter’s wit, charm and values helped mold me into the man I’ve become. I’ve ridden with him in the badlands of Arizona, I’ve worked cattle in the hot sun beside him and I’ve gotten to know him as a friend, as well as a mentor. They don’t make them like Baxter anymore, and it’s a true honor for our company to be associated with a cowboy of his caliber.”

JOE BEAVER DOES IT AGAIN

Brody’s Shoot-Out – Champion - Chase Williams - $1,000 and Runner Up - Tucker Jacob - $500

J

oe Beaver rolled through Labor Day Weekend with an event that is surely going to be the one many remember for 2012. The Joe Beaver 1st Annual Labor Day Weekend Jr. Roping was held in Stephenville, Texas and was an addition to an event of the same type held this past spring. The first was successful, the event in September was outstanding. “Man, it was good for the kids, paid good and there was good calves,” said Beaver. “And they just kept on coming.” That they did. More than 400 kids entered up to make a total of 671 entries and 2,026 runs in three days. This did not include the new “King of Sling” 3D Breakaway roping that proved to be an awesome event in itself. In

the end, the Jr. Roping event paid out $106,000 in cash, making this event one of the best for Jr. Calf ropers anywhere. The roping was a great success! Beaver added this event to what he started earlier this year and hopes to add a few more to his schedule in the next few years. Hoping to get a total of four events per year, all with this same type of action and fun, Beaver wants to keep offering events the future roping stars of the sport can enjoy and help them become successful. 12 & Under Goat Tying 27 Entries Average Winners 1. It keeps calves healthy. ”I train horses for a living, specializing in calf roping horses. . . so I keep lots of calves to work these horses on. I give roping lessons as well, so I need to keep my calves well in order to do my work. Precision Feed does it for me. Ernie Theriot Double E Farms Owner/Horse Trainer

Calf Ropers Reunion

T

he USCRA landed at the Brazos County Expo in Bryan, Texas for one last event before the USCRA Finals. The Calf Ropers Reunion was held in late August and ropers were treated to a great event with lots and lots of calf roping action. The August 25-26 weekend was two days full of calf roping. The 8-header format was welcomed and ropers filled their pockets full of cash. With two arenas running throughout both Saturday and Sunday, the action was non stop. One arena hosted the 00 and 00-Select roping, while the second arena held the EE and #1 ropings. There was also a #2 roping held in whatever arena finished first both days of the event. The first day witnessed the first four rounds of each roping bringing ropers back the next day for the second four rounds. With buckles awarded to Average winners, money available in each round and a special team jackpot set up, ropers had a chance to fill their pockets. After the two days of roping, the 00 Average championship went home with Rodney McCauley. He took the Calf Ropers Reunion Brazos County Expo Bryan, Texas August 25-26, 2012 00 Round 1 1. Athletic Position

L

with

BUILT BY-CAM READY-DP

18 • OCTOBER 2012

ast month we talked about horse position when roping. This month I want to touch on CRX’Dsomething that is mostly overlooked in our sport and that’s athletic position. Athletic position is having your weight distributed over the balls of your feet, knees slightly bent, back straight and head up. In any athletic sport where you have to move fast, this is the position you start from. College and professional athletes all know this. If, while you were walking down the sidewalk, a car suddenly veered towards you, you would naturally “break down” into this position to move quickly. In our sport there are lots of guys who are naturally athletic, and then there are lots who are not. In a sport where every hundredth of a second counts, it’s important to maximize your chances. In the gym I work out on a Bosu ball that looks like half a ball. You can stand on either side and it’s wonderful for gaining balance. I work on my arms, shoulders and squats all on the Bosu for the purpose of agility and balance. So many people don’t realize the importance of athleticism when roping calves. From the time you get off your horse and until you throw your hands up, you need your weight distributed over the balls of your feet and to be in an athletic position. We quickly dismount and run as fast as possible on uneven ground. There’s a lot of potential for injury if you’re not physically prepared for it. The best athletes in the world, professional football and basketball players, routinely work on foot drills and other exercises for balance and coordination to increase their performance by even a mere two or three percent. If it could increase your performance as much as forty percent, would you not do this? Guys who are naturally athletic may not have to work at it. But I believe anyone can improve their performance if they do. You can find these exercises on the internet.

Footwork is very under estimated and overlooked in our sport. If your footwork is right, your position will be right. You will make far less mistakes and your consistency will shoot through the roof. Next month we’ll talk about position and the dismount. This year I’ve been invited to give a motivational speech at the NRS trade show at the MGM each morning at 9:30 a.m. I invite you all

to come if you are going to be in Las Vegas during the finals. I would love for you all to send me some topics you would like me to talk about. Please email them to me at strant@aol.com. Our STS Ranch Wear will debut during the NFR and we’re very excited. The feedback has been very positive and overwhelming. I absolutely love the products. STS will have a booth at the NRS trade

show at the MGM. You will also be able to find STS Ranch Wear at Archundi & Company at the Convention Center. I’m working on a plan for my 2013 articles and need some ideas. Please email me at strant@aol.com with ideas and topics you would like to read about. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

What On Earth Am I Here For?

P

robably the most important question that we could ever ask is, “Why am I alive?” The Prophet Jeremiah asked the following question in Jeremiah 20:18: “Why was I born? Was it only to have trouble and sorrow, to end my life in disgrace?” (TEV). For thousands of years people have asked this question, “Why am I alive?” It sounded like Jeremiah was having a bad hair day when the scripture was written. Someone has said, “I hope life isn’t a joke, because I don’t get it.” If we don’t see life from God’s perspective then there are only three ways to approach life. None of them work, but they’re very popular. Mystical Approach – You find it in New Age books; a lot of seminars; and it’s talked about on a lot of TV shows. You find it in movies like “The Matrix” and “Star Wars.” They use words like, “look within; look inside yourself; it’s a matter of introspection.” It’s kind of like, “Trust the force Luke.” Somebody needs to stand up and admit that this doesn’t work. Because it doesn’t work. If this worked, we would all know our purpose because we’ve done it. My word to you is that you didn’t create it, so you can’t tell yourself what your purpose is. Self-Help Approach – They say you’ve got to make up a purpose. We find these in many “self-help” books. They say things like, “consider your dreams, set some goals, figure out what you’re good at, aim high, go for it, be disciplined, break your bad habits, believe that you can achieve.” Actually that’s quite good advice if you want to be successful, but being successful and knowing the purpose of your life are not the same thing. If being successful brought happiness, why are there so many miserable wealthy people? Philosophical Approach – In the philosophical approach, the idea is that you speculate about the purpose of life. Get a pipe; get a latte from Starbucks, and then hmmmm, “Why am I here?” What am I here for, where did I come from, where am I going? Then think about it. . .

As I was contemplating this, I realized why God has called sin, sin. I believe that sin is nothing more than the created violating the plan and purpose of the Creator. If you want to know the purpose of a thing, you don’t ask the thing. You ask the one who created the thing. I have a lot of friends that own businesses, we also have many employees here at the church, from time to time I have people come to me and say they just want to do it their way. Authority has been given to the creator of a business, the creator of an invention, and the creator of man. Scriptures say that all things were created by God. ALL THINGS. The substance that we look at, whether it is a building, a computer, or a person, was all created by God. You and I were created for God’s glory, which means we were created for His purpose. We can do life man’s way or we can do life God’s way. Frustration comes from not reading the instruction manual to assemble a product. The Bible is the instruction manual for life. You can make up your own and be miserable or read what the creator said about you and find peace and eternal life. What to look for in a Calf Horse Continued

Y

ou really need to try horses out before buying. First, let the seller ride it and show it. Let them tell you all the information about the horse. See it go once or twice, and then follow the instructions on how to ride that particular horse when you get on. But, before getting on the horse, pay attention to see if the horse is high or low maintenance in the corner; how it leaves the box, does it have rate off your hand or do you have to help it start, does it follow the calf where it goes left or right, does it get there, does it run over calves, or just can’t get to the calf. Then watch the stop; is it too late VSA stopping, pulls easy, is the calf easy to flank, is the rope loose or tight when flanking or does it drag the calf off. Watch for these

things on the ground before riding the horse. “It’s hard to evaluate these things when riding the horse.” says Shane Steeves, calf horse trainer/owner of 4REAL horsetraining.com. Remember, typically younger horses will have more issues. Horses between 4-7 years of age, their mental soundness depends on how much time they have got on them. A 10-15 year old seasoned horse should be sound and cool. “Look for the feel of the horse to see if you and the horse fit. A good feel means you get along with that horse. If you feel smooth, you feel comfortable; you feel comfortable, you feel confident. Not a good feel, not a good fit.” says Shane. If in doubt about a horse, it’s better to go ask a reputable calf horse trainer than your everyday roper for help. Some people are trainers and some people are just good at roping. Remember, no horse if perfect. Consider your budget, your ability and seek advice from a professional, if in doubt. Remember, “Practice to Win” Casey Sellers SS Roping, llc Tuf Kaf www.ssroping.com

ow, what a month it has been. In my little office I get to see a whole lot of action. Not in person so much, but I get a glimpse at things over the internet, through my imagination from results and stories and from talking to people on the phone. I have to say, the past month has been pretty exciting for calf ropers. To start, Joe Beaver’s Jr. Calf Roping event must have been quite a show. It sounds like young ropers from all across the country showed up in Stephenville for the event. Joe B was very happy with the event and had lots of great things to say about it in a phone conversation a few days afterwards. He was excited to see so many young ropers show up to compete and enjoyed sharing his time with the contestants at the event. Although the Jr. event was the highlight, Joe B was also very excited about the results of the 3D King of Sling. This was the brainchild of both Joe and Lanham Mangold and kind of a test run. Well, to say the least, the test

run proved positive. Not only did Joe B have lots of kudos for the King Of Sling, Mangold was also energized by the event. After talking to both of these guys, there is little doubt the 3D format was an enhancement to the event. Both agreed that ropers of all ages utilized the event to enjoy themselves, everyone of every caliber had a chance to win money and it was well accepted at the event. As the Jr. event wrapped up, the next big thing in the sport is the USCRA National Finals. Although details are just now leaking into the office, the event no doubt shaped up to be great. Lots of winning, lots of action and tons of fun were well represented at the event. You can be sure to get all of the juicy details, results and photos in next month’s issue. Lastly, now is the time of year we all start turning our attention to who is in the lead in the PRCA World Standings and in the best shape going into the NFR. Well, if you havn’t noticed, our friend Justin Mass is in a pretty good

spot this year. Leading the charge and sitting in the number one spot with a lead of about $38,000, Mass has set himself up for a great chance at a world title. Of course, it isn’t all said and done until the final calf is roped in Vegas. The likes of Tuff Cooper, Cody Ohl, Hunter Herrin, Cory Solomon who currently hold the top five positions in the standings will be gunning for the championship as well. The remaining field of ropers in the top 15 right now includes, Shane Hanchey, Clint Robinson, Matt Shiozowa, Houston Hutto, Fred Whitfield, Monty Lewis, Ryan Jarrett, Bradley Bynum, Cliff Cooper and Blair Burk. This field of ropers is all tough and will make the event exciting to see. LikeP/U I said, around W CHthe VSA excitement IN HOUSE PROOF this time of year is unbelievable. I enjoy the opportunity to get a chance to be part of it all and thank all of you for this opportunity. Until next time, I wish each of you the best of luck at future events. Ryan Davis
