s I close out the last issue of the year, the National Finals Rodeo has just concluded. I spent a few days in Las Vegas during this year’s NFR and…well…there really is no way to describe it in words. The overall magnitude of the event and all that surrounds it is simply mind-blowing. It has, in fact, taken on an identity of its own. It’s the NFR! The NFR is a marketer’s dream child. It literally takes over all of Las Vegas (no small task), everyone feels its presence. Locals who know nothing about rodeo at all, refer to it by name, visitors (even foreign ones) figure it out in about 30 minutes as well. The presence of it literally transforms the place. And the people? They pour in around the clock, pockets full of cash and plastic mesmerized by the opportunity to say they were a part of it. It struck me as I was wandering through one of the five “Cowboy Christmas” trade shows scattered up and down the Las Vegas strip that the NFR outshines its own creator…that is, the brand, “NFR,” carries far more significance than the brand, “PRCA,” from which it was born. Having talked to a number of random people in town for the event, I would say that about half of them couldn’t even tell you the connection between the two… odd, don’t you think? The reason this is important… and something the PRCA should be a little jittery about… is that it seems the tail is now wagging the dog. Now don’t misunderstand, I’m not denigrating the NFR in any way, nor am I saying that the

popularity of the event is in any way a bad thing. Television contracts and the exposure the city of Las Vegas brings to the event, adds up to dollars. And there is no debating the fact that as a result of the boatloads of cash generated, at least some of it is reflected in the generous, record-setting payout to those who qualify to compete at the event. I do, however, have a concern. It seems year after year, the NFR keeps getting bigger and bigger, but while its popularity continues to grow, the same can’t be said for the PRCA itself. Membership is down, the number of PRCA rodeos has fallen significantly, and the ones that remain, struggle to fill performances with contestants. I mean, it’s great that the PRCA has the NFR to pull it along during some tough economic times, but I hope the PRCA isn’t content with the situation… accepting this as the “new normal.” I’m not sure what the long-term model is for the PRCA, or if they even have one. If they don’t, it would not come as a surprise… I mean, with the NFR making it “all good” at the end of each season, I can see how some complacency could set in. I can see how ignoring what is going on would be an easy thing to do, and maybe the thinking is that they will stay focused on what is working… the NFR… and let the rest take care of itself. I hope this is not the case. In fact, I think the prudent thing to do would be to work on the grassroots side of the association while the going is good at the top end. This may well be the case. The PRCA may be doing more than I think in this regard... but if it is, I don’t see it. Look, I’m just saying that it would be a really bad thing to waste this opportunity to do some continued on page 31

right lights, money and lots of great rodeo action as the 2012 PRCA National Finals Rodeo once again captivated thousands of rodeo fans throughout ten nights. From a spectacular, cowboy beginning to the last twist of the final bull rider, the event captured the heart and soul of rodeo. The NFR wrapped up the 2012 PRCA season, crowning another set of the best rodeo cowboys and cowgirls in the world. Trevor Brazile once again made history as he took home his tenth All-Around gold buckle. Picking up the title midway through the rodeo in the fifth round, the action continued and the world championship races heated up. In the end, the 2012 NFR offered up firsttime world champions, past champions who claimed another title and back-toback world championships. Every competitor proved they had what it takes to be among rodeo’s elite competitors and the 2012 NFR marked a big chapter in the history of rodeo. The most dramatic part of the event is the final night, round ten where all the chips are down and World Champions crowned. Stealing the show this year, all eyes were on the team roping where perhaps the most dramatic of all tales proved the event truly does offer lots of excitement. with a heeler from another partnership became more and more real as the NFR wore on. But, in a final-round stunner, heeler Jade Corkill came from behind to capture his first gold buckle along with Chad Masters, who won a world championship for the second time. If the NFR had ended after nine rounds, a split championship would have occurred between Masters and Patrick Smith. However, Driggers and Corkill put together a 4.0-second run that put the pressure on Masters and Clay O’Brien Cooper and Trevor Brazile and Smith. Masters and Cooper roped their final-

round steer in 5.2 seconds, good enough to place fifth in the round, and Driggers and Corkill’s round-winning run held up when Brazile and Smith posted a time of 10.0 seconds. The result? Masters, thanks to a firstplace result in the average, finished with $196,099, topping Driggers by $1,211. And Corkill put $34,159 in his pocket on the final night of the NFR to finish with $190,797, topping Cooper by $1,131. While the team roping was tight, no race was closer than the saddle bronc riding. Cody DeMoss was the only cowboy to ride all 10 horses. He won the 10th round with an 86-point trip aboard Smith, Harper & Morgan Rodeo’s Painted Feather, winning the average with 798.5 points on 10. But Milford, Utah, cowboy Jesse Wright tied for fourth in the round and finished sixth in average, hanging on to win his first gold buckle by just $796.93. Three of ProRodeo’s world champions from 2011 pulled off a repeat just one year later as steer wrestler Luke Branquinho won his fourth gold buckle and bareback rider Kaycee Feild and tie-down Tuf Cooper each backed up their first. Branquinho had a steer fall on him in the week leading up to the NFR, then couldn’t get down from his horse, taking a no-time in the very first round. None of it mattered in the end as the Los Alamos, California, cowboy cashed in seven of the

final nine rounds, including a Round 4 victory, to win the world by $13,898 over Casey Martin. Branquinho became the first bulldogger to successfully defend his world championship since Ote Berry in 1990-91 and joined Berry and Jim Bynum in second place all-time with four steer wrestling world titles. His hazer and friend Les Shepperson won the average with a total of 48.6 seconds on 10 head, rising from 11th to third over the course of 10 days. No cowboy in any event was more dominant in Las Vegas than Feild. The Payson, Utah, bareback rider placed in eight of 10 rounds, won at least a share of a first-place check in three and finished with $276,850 in season earnings, topping Will Lowe by more than $56,000. Bobby Mote, who finished third in the average and the world standings this year, was the last bareback rider to win backto-back world championships in 2009-10. Feild’s father, Lewis, also accomplished the feat in 1985-86. Cooper joined his father in the club of cowboys who have successfully defended world titles, as well. Roy Cooper won six gold buckles in tie-down roping, including those back to back wins in from 1980-1984. After Justin Maass posted a 13.2second run, Cooper knew a workmanlike run would help him capture another title, and his 7.9-second effort took second in the round and moved him to second in the average.

Rodeo Finals = Big Ticket in AZ

he GCPRA (Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association) wrapped up their 2012 Season with a great Finals rodeo. The Avi Resort and Casino in Ft Mohave, Arizona was filled with the best rodeo contestants from across the state on November 23-24 as the GCPRA played out the final rendition of the 2012 season. The event was jammed-packed with excitement, filled to the brim with big payouts and put an exclamation point on the 2012 season. These is no doubt the GCPRA is one of the best rodeo associations in the country and the cowboys and cowgirls who gather under the GCPRA flag are some of the best in the business. The GCPRA Finals rodeo wrapped up many tough battles throughout the events awarding the event year-end champions, as well as the rodeo Final Average championships. Dynamite Horseman Supply saddles were awarded to the yearend winners and the Finals and year-end champions also received Shea Fisher trophy buckles. Additionally, lots of money was awarded throughout the two day event in each go round, as well as the Average. The contestants that qualified for this years GCPRA Finals rodeo were offered a great package to run at and many filled their pockets and you can bet all of them enjoyed the chance to compete at the event The GCPRA has already begun to look forward to the 2013 season and ways to improve their rodeo season with more money and added values to the association. With the supply of great rodeo talent out of the great state of Arizona, as well as surrounding states of the Southwest, the association is no doubt one of the best and

rodeo competitors who participate in the GCPRA should be proud to be a part of such a well established and professional organization. The GCPRA Finals event was a success due to the hard work of many people. The GCPRA has a great board of directors who’s determination throughout the season to make the association the best no doubt lies unhidden. Additionally, many pitched in to help make the finals a success, including the staff at the Avi Resort and Casino who allowed the cowboys and cowgirls converge on them throughout the weekend. Rodeo fans and contestants enjoyed the hospitality. t all came down to this; The World Series of Team Roping Finale. Once again the sport of team roping was rocked by staggering payouts as the Finale played out in Las Vegas, Nevada during the biggest rodeo week of the year. Sitting along side the National Finals Rodeo, the WSTR Finale awarded team ropers with tremendous payouts. In the matter of a few days, the Finale paid out over 6Million in cash alone. National Trail Champion Offers Tips, Expertise at NM Clinic Mark Bolender Challenges Riders and Horses to Mental, Physical Tests on Extreme Trail Does your horse cross water willingly? Can he make it over a suspension bridge? How about a teeter-totter? After three days with three-time National Mountain Trail Grand Champion Mark Bolender, he’ll conquer these challenges of Extreme Trail and more. For the second year in a row, Bolender will be leading a small group of riders and horses over the master trail course of La Estancia Alegre, home to champion Peruvian horses in Alcalde, NM (about halfway between Taos and Santa Fe). The course includes bridges, winding water obstacles, switch-backs, rock scrambles, terraces and more. Bolender is accepting 10 riders for each of two clinics. The first runs May 13-15, 2013; the second is May 17-19, 2013. Costs are $450 with a horse (you may borrow one from La Estancia Alegre) or $150 for auditing all three days with lunch. Auditing without lunch is $75 for three days or $25 per day. Over the course of the three-day clinic, Bolender will teach riders and auditors how to first establish leadership with their horses, then encourage those horses to think their way through the challenges of the course rather than reacting with

instinct. Riders start building confidence and skills on the ground, then mount up to master the obstacles from the saddle. “Most horses operate on instinct,” Bolender said. “Instinct will determine whether you as a handler or rider are worthy of a leadership role. Then they’ll use their intelligence to figure out what you want.” The subtle difference between instinct and intelligence directly affects a rider’s success over obstacles, Bolender said. “If you come up to a scary object, instead of trying to cross the scary object, the horse will come into you (for direction)” he said. Lucky 777 – Big Money!

he Lucky 777 Roping once again, for the 13th year, hit the big payout section in the world of team roping. The Bullhead City Mojave Crossing Event Center paid out a tremendous amount of cash and prizes. In fact, over $209,000 filled the hands of those who placed in the roping over the three-day event. The biggest payout went home with Caleb Twisselman and Paul Brashears in the #15 roping. They won $27,720 in cash. Coming in second in the big money was the team of Bruce Bolen, DVM and Bob Strander who won $17,646 in the #10 roping on Sunday. There were a whole lot more ropers who filled their pockets at the event. Adding another rich chapter to its history, the Lucky 777 Roping once again was the talk of the Southwest throughout the weekend of December 7-9, 2012. Jackpot Roping Goes Big!

he Old Town Feed & Supplies and Bishop’s Trailer Sales 6th annual Trailer and Saddle Roping was another great success. The Bishop and Ferris families have been working hard to make this Southern Arizona roping a fun event for their customers, friends, and ropers from all over. Ropers came from Canada, Mexico, and many parts of the U.S. With over 1,960 teams and fresh cattle supplied by Miguel Martinez and Reed Flake, ropers will want to participate year after year. The Pima County Fairgrounds has proved to be a perfect venue for this event. With the two nearly identical indoor arenas set up back-to-back, and the super staff running the arenas, everything went smoothly. The weather was beautiful and made it nice for all the spectators that came to the event. Thank you to the Pima County Fairgrounds and Sunset Cantina for the live band and Friday Night Steak Fry. The 4-H Food Booth and other venders offered good food and fun shopping opportunities. Thank you to Diane Graham and her staff for coming out to take pictures. The team of Brock Hanson and Bucky Campbell won the Average of the Open Division with a time of 34.95. Second place went to Erich Rogers and Cory Petska and third place was Erich Rogers and Dustin Bird. The #15 Division was next on the agenda and the winning team was Victor Begay and Garrison Dixon. They were 37.16 seconds on five steers and earned $3,040, plus $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings and trophy Custom Gold Gist buckles. Second place was Travis Bard and John MacKenzie and third place went to Clay Snure and Cole Sherwood. The #13 Division winners were Edward Hawley and Ranger Hill from Hays, Montana and Scottsdale, Arizona. They caught five steers in 42.54 seconds. The feat gave them $3,320, trophy custom Gold Gist buckles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second place was the team of Jerrol Campbell and Rod Lyman from Benton City, Washington and Victor, Montana. The third place finishers were Bucky Campbell and Terry Edgmon. The #12 Division winners were Lucas MacKenzie and Kolt Campbell as they caught four steers in a time of 37.97 seconds. The #10 Division champions were Joe Perez and Seth Kent as they finished the roping with a time of 33.46 seconds on four steers. They won $4,920, trophy custom Gold Gist buckles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second place was Wyatt Hershberger and Armando Flores with a time of 34.93 seconds on four and third place went to Andres Silva and Paco Calixtro. The Incentive winners of the #10 Division were Jake Cruzan and Brad Barkemeyer. The final day began with the #10 Gold Plus Specialty roping and the big winners were Bobby Felkins and Dee Curry. They took home first in the main Average with a total time of 43.18 seconds on four steers, first in the Incentive Average and first in the century bonus. All together they earned $3,040, plus $4,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings and trophy custom Gold Gist buckles. Second place was Jerry Stutts and Earl Higgins and third place went to Ron Miller and Tom Teague. Wyatt Hershberger and Fred Coffinger from Litchfield Park and San Tan Valley, Arizona won the Average in the #9 Division. They completed the roping with a time of 41.05 on four steers and earned $5,050, plus trophy custom Gold Gist buckles, and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. e had a very busy month and many ropers who attended our events had a very good November. We hosted a World Series Qualifier in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a Saddle and Trailer Roping in Casa Grande, Arizona and a USTRC Qualifier back in Albuquerque. The weather took its toll on the turnout at the World Series in Albuquerque. Temperatures were in the 30’s for the high both days. Despite the bad weather, we still had several brave ropers participate in the event. Payouts as usual were exceptional at this event! The Saddle and Trailer roping in Casa Grande was a huge success. The trailer will be making it’s way to Calgary, Alberta, Canada after the winter season. Makayla Boisjoli who is only 15 years old placed second and third to claim the big prize. Local young gun Jacob Auza won the saddle after placing second and fourth. Thanks to Steve Sherwood for supplying a nice set of steers for the event. The USTRC Duke City Classic saw numerous ropers come out during the Thanksgiving weekend. The event experienced a 16% increase over last year. Great steers made for an enjoyable roping experience for all who attended. At the three events combined we paid out nearly $175,000 in cash and prizes. We hope everyone had good luck at the World Series Finale in Las Vegas. Don’t forget the great weekend of roping we have planned for you ropers in Clovis, New Mexico over New Year’s weekend. odeo as we know it took a while to evolve. Wild West Shows, Frontier Days celebrations, stampedes and roundup celebrations of various forms all had a hand in its formation. It is written there were as many as 100 different events, contests or displays the various producers chose from when organizing a show. One such event was simply known as “bulldogging.” It was the precursor to what we know today as steer wrestling and is the only event in rodeo which can be traced back to one man who is credited with its origination. That man is Bill Pickett. Pickett was born December 5, 1870 in Travis County, Texas, north of modernday Austin. His parents were former slaves. He was a black man, who also was said to have Cherokee Indian and Anglo in his blood. “His antecedents were of mixed Negro, Caucasian and Cherokee Indian blood,” according to Colonel Bailey C. Hanes. “A not uncommon blend [in the 1800’s] in the upper south.” Hanes wrote in his book, Bill Pickett, Bulldogger (University of

Oklahoma Press, 1977). As a kid, Bill worked on local ranches, where he observed ranch dogs (often referred to as “bull dogs”) bring wild cattle under submission by biting them on the nose and upper lip. He must have thought, “If it works for those dogs, why wouldn’t it work for me?” Bill started practicing his “bulldogging” technique. Nobody knows for sure if he first started doing this on the range or in a corral. What we do know is that he figured out how to spur his horse alongside a bovine and jump onto it, grabbing a hold of its horns. He then maneuvered around so he could get a bite on the nose or upper lip, just like he’d witnessed those good dogs doing. Then he threw his weight to the ground, bringing the

animal with him. It had no choice but to submit. Before long, word got around about Bill’s stunt and he started doing exhibitions. Although he only had a fifth-grade education, he and his brothers were some of the earliest black entrepreneurs in Texas during the late 1800s. They formed a group called, “Pickett Bros. Bronco Busters and Rough Riders Association” near Taylor. As word

spread, Bill was requested more and more for exhibitions further away from home. He did shows all across the West. By 1904, his technique and act had been honed to perfection and he made an appearance at the prestigious Cheyenne Frontier Days. There he caught the attention of the Miller Brothers whose 101 Ranch Wild West Show was known worldwide. They hired Pickett in 1905 for his popular act and brought him and his family from Texas to Oklahoma, housing them at the 101 Ranch headquarters. He was billed as “The Dusky Demon,” and known at the time as “the only professional bulldogger in the world.” He worked alongside the likes of Buffalo Bill, Will Rogers and Tom Mix and performed with the Wild West Show in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, South America, and England. Colonel Zack Miller of the 101 Ranch described Pickett as “…the greatest sweat-and-dirt cowhand that ever lived, bar none.” He was such a popular performer that he was also requested to appear in some early motion pictures. He was in the films The Bull Dogger and The Crimson Skull and has been credited as the first black cowboy movie star. Bill worked for the Wild West Show (and Millers 101 Ranch) the rest of his life. He did everything for them from working cattle to picking cotton to training horses and, of course, performing in their shows. Along the way he taught bulldogging to many cowboys. The biting aspect of it eventually was dropped, but “steer wrestling” evolved and has since became one of the six standard events of rodeo to have survived

out of the 100-plus various events tried throughout the years. In 1890 Pickett married Maggie Turner and the couple had nine children. Over the years Bill sometimes entered rodeos as a Native American just because blacks were often not allowed to compete due to prejudices of the day. There has been speculation that Bill would have several “World Championships” in the bulldogging event to his credit had he been allowed to compete like his white contemporaries. Of course, by the time World Championships were even counted, Bill would have been in his late fifties so who knows. One thing is probable however, without Bill Pickett, there would not be a steer wrestling contest. In 1932, Bill Pickett was kicked in the head by a horse while working at the 101 Ranch and died of his injuries eleven days later on April 4, at the age of sixty-one. His friend Will Rogers announced the funeral on his radio show, commenting, “Bill Pickett never had an enemy, even the steers wouldn’t

hurt old Bill.” Pickett is buried near a fourteen-foot stone monument to Ponca Tribal Chief White Eagle, on Monument Hill, in Kay County, Oklahoma. Today there is a Bill Pickett Memorial rodeo series, held annually since 1984. They raise money for scholarships and according to the website, “The Bill Pickett Memorial Scholarship Fund (BPMSF) strongly supports education and benefits youth each year by providing scholarships to black high school and college students involved or interested in pursuing careers in rodeo or animal science.” In 1971 Bill Pickett became the first black honoree into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s Rodeo Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City. rnest “Ernie O” A. Ortega, age 64, a lifetime resident of New Mexico passed away on Friday, November 23, 2012. Ernie retired from the City of Albuquerque. He loved horses and had a passion for team roping. Ernie participated in the USTRC team roping events. He is an inspiration to many people and will be truly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Elvira Ortega; and sister, Doris Telles. Ernie is survived by his loving girlfriend of 18 years, Yvonne McNiel; daughters, Melissa Ortega and Melanie Muller and husband, Bill; granddaughter, Omri Gonzales; brothers, Anthony Ortega and wife, Theresa, Jessie Ortega and Steve Ortega; and sister, Linda Ortega. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many close relatives in Las Vegas, NM. Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 3, 2012. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Jerry Elkins, Mike Chavez, Tony Crespin, Leon Munoz, Ferron Lucero and Ted Moralez. Honorary Pallbearers will be Candido Ortega, Tony Marquez, Joshua Ortega and Antonio Ortega. The family would like to give a special thank you to Mr. Jerry Elkins.

ith six saddles, buckles, breast collars, jackets and sweatshirts, not to mention $5,000 to high point winners and a $1,000 Bounty Steer running through the herd, the recent event held in Albuquerque, New Mexico turned out good for ropers and for those who produced the event. The $1,000 Bounty Steer roping held at the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Posse Arena was filled with two days of great team roping fun and plenty of cash and prize payouts. Saturday, the first day of December, hosted the #11 Handicap roping. Ropers gathered up for their chance to win part of the great prizeline, as well as a handsome cash payout. The prizeline included a pair of trophy saddles awarded to the winning team. In the end Leon Nez and Jerimiah Jodie took the saddle home, but there were plenty more prizes to be awarded as well. Buckles, jackets, breast

collars and sweatshirts filled the prizeline through tenth place in the Average. Additionally, the high point roper of the roping earned a $5,000 paycheck and the high point Incentive roper (4 and under) won a trophy saddle. The high point saddle went home with Jon Satriana, and the big cash prize was claimed by Jerimiah Jodie. Sunday kicked off with the same format, but lowered the event to a #9 roping. Again, ropers filled the arena in their quest to win their share of the big prizeline and great cash awards. On Sunday, the team of Leonel Munoz and Jose Merino won the Average and claimed the pair of trophy saddles. Other teams claimed the rest of the Average payout and in the end it was Benjamin Rascon who claimed the #3 and below Incentive trophy saddles and Allen Charlie who won the $5,000 high point cash payout.

good for the future of the sport by allowing yourself to be convinced that because the NFR is so great, that everything else in the sport is great, too. I don’t want to see the PRCA wake up one day and realize there is no more product in the pipeline. The solution? There are a lot of them floating around, and have been for years. Most of them come from conventional thinking. They try to address the problem by adjusting the structure as it is. By now I think everyone has realized…or should have realized… that those kinds of solutions aren’t very successful. No, the real answers lay in taking a new view of the sport of rodeo and how it fits in with today’s culture and economics, and come up with a comprehensive strategy that will keep it viable for decades to come. Surprisingly, it’s a lot easier than the PRCA probably thinks and more importantly, it requires little financial commitment. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that the financial commitment from the PRCA would be less than the revenue it continues to lose each year as a result of the sport shrinking. Too often associations follow the path that the PRCA is on. They originate, they struggle to grow, they eventually become successful, they become top-heavy, and then… if their leadership is not insightful enough to understand how to stay successful…they crash. I hope this is not the end result for the PRCA, but I do know that it’s time for the association to reinvent itself at the grassroots level and help itself by helping those who raised it to the level of success that it now enjoys.
