s 2013 comes to an end, the topic setting the rodeo world abuzz seems to be the announcement coming upon the conclusion of the recent National Finals Rodeo that the PRCA is going to relocate their crown jewel, the NFR, away from the lights of Las Vegas, to…… Orlando. I half-regrettably enter into the fray of the discussion because doing so is exactly what the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Bureau (LVCVB) wants me to do. Well, maybe not just me, but also every other publication, website or information source it can get stirred up. This looks to me like a traditional south-of-the-border standoff and, unfortunately, its not a fair fight. First off, let’s all be honest… the NFR is about as likely to move to Orlando, Florida, as I am to walk on the moon… Okay, so maybe slightly more likely, but still not very likely. But now they have kind of put themselves in a box by “saying” they are… or at least genuinely considering it. Actually, it’s the LVCVB that put them in that box by announcing it, if not first, certainly more loudly… Outmaneuver number one. Already the PRCA is trying to back away from the announcement… just as the LVCVB knew they would. That’s what I was alluding to when I said this is not a fair fight. I mean, not to denigrate the brain trust of the PRCA… their track record speaks for itself… but this is like a

standoff between me and my 7-year-old… She’s not going to out-think me, she doesn’t yet have the experience to outmaneuver me, and if all else fails I’ll just drop the hammer on her. The LVCVB is in the “maneuvering” business. They have people who do nothing BUT negotiate mega-deals. They long ago calculated how they would handle the negotiation for renewing the contract for the PRCA to keep the NFR in their city. They contemplated every step they would take, every step the PRCA would take in response, and then how they would counter. I’m pretty sure the LVCVB knew what moves the PRCA would take before they knew it themselves. Like I said, it’s not a fair fight. Look, I’m certainly not taking the side of the LVCVB. I am one of the few who hates the NFR being in Las Vegas. But that’s just it… I’m one of the few. And I am certainly not buying the LVCVB’s line that they cannot “afford” the PRCA’s increased revenue demand for keeping the NFR in Las Vegas… C’mon… that’s ridiculous! I have no idea if the added $4 million the PRCA is reportedly asking for is too much or not, but I do know the city stands to lose a hell of a lot more than that if the event leaves… duh… and there is nothing IN THE WORLD continued on page 31

Trevor Brazile, second in the average, also broke Whitfield’s mark with 83.20 seconds on 10 head. Cooper, who was ninth in the average and finished fourth in the world, was trying to become the first tie-down roper to win three straight since his father, Roy “Super Looper” Cooper, won five consecutive titles from 1980-84. Hanchey is the first non-Texan to win the tie-down roping since Herbert Theriot in 1994. “I had a goal after three rounds that I needed $30,000 won and then after that everything just kind of flowed together,” Hanchey said. “After that I didn’t put much thought into it. I just reacted all week. It’s an incredible feeling.” Ohl claimed his fifth round win in 6.6 seconds - one-tenth shy of his arena and round record - to tie Dave Brock’s record for round wins in 1978. Ohl also tied the mark in 2001. All-Around World Champion Brazile became the first ProRodeo cowboy to go over $5 million in earnings. The 19-time world champion has $5,029,313 in career winnings. The 37-year-old cowboy won $426,011 this season, the second highest in PRCA history behind his 2010 total of $507,921. Brazile has the seven highest totals in history and has eclipsed $400,000 three times. hane Hanchey wanted a gold buckle so badly, he figured to be nervous before the 10th and final round of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Saturday night. But the 24-year-old showed how calm - and confident - he was by winking and smiling to the crowd during the opening. “It was just another round for me,” said Hanchey, who was competing at his fourth Wrangler NFR, although it was before a record crowd of 18,242. But it was a special night for the man from Sulphur, La. He came into the 10-day WNFR in 10th place in the tie-down roping, more than $62,000 behind the leader - his good friend and two-time defending champion Tuf Cooper. Hanchey won the average - setting a record in the process - and broke the record for earnings in tie-down roping at the WNFR, while climbing to the top of the standings. “Words can’t describe it,” he said. “My family deserves it. We’ve been through a lot. That horse (Reata) has been through a lot and I’ve been through a lot. This is unbelievable. It means so much to me and my family.” Hanchey’s horse, Reata, has battled injuries the past two years. And his grandmother, Lola McBride, passed away June 12. After winning Rounds 1 and 9, Hanchey talked about her. “You know I have a special angel looking over me this year,” he said. Hanchey won $134,766 and broke Cody

Brazile and Smith were seventh in the average and won $76,773 in team roping, while improving to fifth in the world In tie-down roping, Brazile was second in the average and earned $94,050 in that event; he finished third in the world standings. Counting his National Finals Steer Roping winnings, Brazile won $197,285 at this year’s National Finals. Kaycee Feild, another second-generation world champion - he’s the son of Lewis Feild, a two-time bareback riding and three-time all-around champion - has won three straight world titles and also claimed three straight average titles. He’s the first to accomplish that feat. Jack Ward Jr. is the only previous threetime average champ in the bareback riding (1974-76), but he didn’t win a gold buckle in any of those years. Team roper Leo Camarillo holds the record for most consecutive NFR average titles with four, and only Ward, steer wrestler John W. Jones Sr. and saddle bronc rider Rod Warren have won three straight. Feild is the first bareback rider to win three straight gold buckles since Joe Alexander earned five from 1971-75. Feild is two shy of the most bareback riding titles shared by Alexander and Bruce Ford. Bobby Mote has four and Will Lowe owns three. “It’s amazing to be mentioned with Joe Alexander and Bruce Ford, and Bobby Mote and Will Lowe,” Feild said. “I want to keep going and win more. I’m still young and want to win six gold buckles.” The 26-year-old Feild, who lives in Spanish Fork, Utah, said winning never gets old. “Each one gets better for me,” he said of the world title. “That’s huge for me. I want to break records and I want to set my own records. I want to do things nobody’s done before. I got some inspiration tonight from Bruce Ford telling my dad that I’m such a good rider.”

Colletti rode the same horse for 88.5 points at the 2012 WNFR, the highest bareback ride of the rodeo. Feild, who got fifth in Round 10, said he was careful not to get conservative, although he just needed a mistake-free ride to clinch the world title. He rode for 83 points and fourth place on Pete Carr’s Classic Pro Rodeo’s Fancy Free. “I was going to go at him,” Feild said. “I wanted a good, strong mark-out and wanted to stay aggressive.” Team ropers Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill each won their second world championship. I had a few stupid mental mistakes here this time, but overall I felt good.” The amazingly consistent Sherry Cervi won the barrel racing world championship and broke the average record with 138.15 seconds on 10 runs, eclipsing the mark of 138.26 set by Jill Moody in 2010. It’s the fourth gold buckle for the 38-year-old Cervi, spanning a total of 18 years (1995, 1999, 2010, 2013). Shada Brazile, the wife of Trevor Brazile, took second in the average in her first WNFR with 140.3 seconds on 10 runs. She earned $130,278 for the season to finish eighth in the world. Cervi won three rounds and cashed a check in every round, the fifth time that was accomplished by a barrel racer and the first time since Kristie Peterson and her great horse Bozo did it in 1997. Cervi has 23 career NFR round wins, two shy of Charmayne James’ WNFR event record. “It is special, because getting around these barrels 10 times and 2013 PRCA World Champion Team Roper (Heeler), Jade Corkill being faster than anyone else here is so very, very hard to do,” Cervi said. Cervi also won the Ram Truck Top Gun Award with $155,899 as the top money winner in a single event at the WNFR. It’s the second straight year a barrel racer won the award. Hanchey was second ($134,765), followed by Teel ($131,010), Harris ($122,446), Feild ($119,090) and bareback rider Steven Peebles ($116,386). “It’s just all so special,” Cervi said. “This has been such a great year for me. Winning the world and also the Top Gun Award - I’m a bit overwhelmed.”

“Wrap-Up 2013” Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association 2013 Finals

t wasn’t the weekend to be boating on the Colorado River due to the chilly temps, but the temperature inside the Mojave Crossing Event Center was nothing but hot! Competitors from the Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association (GCPRA) came together in Ft. Mohave, AZ for the 2013 GCPRA Rodeo Finals. During the three days, November 22 – 24, 2013 the GCPRA Cowboys and Cowgirls made their final attempt to bring home the cash and prizes, and most importantly the title of yearend champions for the 2013 season. This year’s GCPRA Finals highlighted some outstanding rodeo talent for the many spectators that filled the event center. “I had the opportunity to sit and watch a good part of our finals and I was really proud of the talent that was displayed this year.” Said Paul Carmen, GCPRA President. “This was a successful year and I was very happy with the way the finals turned out.”

Not only were the spectators treated to some great rodeo competition but the production value of this year’s finals were second to none. Spectators were treated to an exciting production with a Laser light show, fireworks and a “Jumbotron” to display times and instant replays. “We have been very blessed this year with our sponsorships.” say Carmen, “Four years ago we had minimal sponsorship dollars and we were awarding the saddles out in the arena, this year we had upwards of $100,000 dollars in sponsorship dollars and are able to put on a top notch production. This would not be at all possible if it were not for all our great sponsors.” Contestants have also reaped some of the benefit with the increase in sponsorship to the organization. This year added money at the finals totaled $39,000 including the incentive events. That put $2,500 dollars of added money in each event, up from $1,000 four years

ago. The total cash awarded this year was $80,000. That was the cash prizes and did not include all the great buckles, saddles and other trophy prizes that were awarded also. The finals are the end to the 2013 rodeo season, but not the end to some of the great things ahead for the GCPRA. The GCPRA has already begun to look forward to the 2013 season and ways to improve their upcoming rodeo season with hopefully more added money and added value to the association. “We have had a very successful year, actually the past few years.” Says Paul Carmen. “Our organization in growing and we can see that in membership, rodeos and sponsorship. Since I started as president our membership has almost doubled, we are gaining new rodeos at about 1-2 per year and we have managed to retain all of our current rodeos. We have picked up more major sponsors this year. I want to thank NAPA Auto Parts this year as our

Planning Your New Year! Decisions, Decisions, Decisions - Let NMRA Help.

t’s the New Year! It’s that time to think about new plans. Whether you are working on just updating your plans and goals from last year or you are making an entirely new list, this is the time of year when we have to deal with a lot of decisions. It’s tough and not too many of us look forward to that time, but it is an important time, and making sure you have looked back at what worked and what didn’t work to make this past year successful is a critical part of this task. If being successful is not already at the top of your list or in one or more lines of your mission statement, it should be. It doesn’t matter if you are a business owner, a team roper, barrel racer, rough stock rider or a rodeo committee, you should be focused on doing your best and setting goals and making plans that are going to work to support your decision to be as successful as possible. If you are a rodeo committee you have a lot of decisions to make, and those decision can be extra tough, as they not only have to accommodate a lot of different types or people and entities, but you have to make sure your event turns a profit so you have money to start the next year. You have to make sure the facilities are in the best condition that they can be, is the ground good, does the sound system work, does the electric eye have new batteries, does the float in the water tank in the bull pen work, did you make sure your advertising listed all the sponsors, did you get that request into the lodgers tax committee on time, the list goes on and on. In making all these decisions it is always good to remember, having good team members, partners, committee members, volunteers, etc. is always important. Having that team to help support you is very important in reaching your goals. It is not always possible to do it all yourself. That is why the New Mexico Rodeo Association (NMRA) has a mission that includes rodeo committees. The NMRA has committed a large

part of their mission to working with rodeo committees. “The NMRA is in a position to offer many of the administrative functions required in the production of a rodeo.” Says John Adams, President of the NMRA. “We provide to our sanctioned committees, Central Entry and all the rodeo administration, we provide highly qualified rodeo secretaries, we provide experienced judges and we advertise and promote each and every regular season rodeo through our web page and our official publication. I can’t imagine why any amateur rodeo committee would elect to go open and not take advantage of being sanctioned.” The Chama Days Rodeo is held in Chama, New Mexico annually and takes place the second weekend of August. The 2013 event was held August 10th and 11th and this year had the highest attendance it has had in years. “We spent a lot of time doing improvements to the facility this past year.” Said Ronnie Carrillo, President of the Chama Days Rodeo Committee. “We had a number of volunteers and businesses that pitched in to get the arena in the best shape it has been in years.” Knowing what to do to improve a facility can be challenging, it is tough to know exactly what to do. “Having the New Mexico Rodeo Association as a partner was a big advantage.” Said Carrillo. “We have been an NMRA sanctioned rodeo for a long time. To be able to get feedback from the association has been a great asset to us, getting feedback from the NMRA and knowing what to do to our facility and how to do it was very valuable. Having a good facility makes a big difference in drawing contestants and putting on a great production. The NMRA feedback helped us a lot.” The Red Ryder Roundup takes place in Pagosa Springs, Colorado every year over the fourth of July. This year will be the Roundup’s 65th annual event. “One of the obvious reason we have worked with the NMRA is, of course,

our geographical location to New Mexico.” Says Jess Ketchum, President of the Red Ryder Roundup Rodeo Committee. “The NMRA helps us to reach out to the largest contestant base in the area. They help us reach a larger number of contestants than we could do locally, but as importantly they have been wonderful in also taking care of all the administration for the event as well. That allows us as a committee to focus on the needs locally. That has been very valuable.” “The NMRA has wonderful relationships with our neighboring states and their associations.” Says Adams. “We co-sanction across all state lines and this does a lot to help with the contestant count. We have dedicated rodeo contestants that are chasing the year end championships and need as many regular season rodeos as possible to make those goals reality. It really is a win-win for everyone.” There is a tremendous amount of competition out there for rodeo committees these days. Especially at the amateur level. Rodeo associations as well, they have to compete against some large national organizations that have the ability to offer some very large prize lines and lots of added money. These larger organizations are very important and offer great opportunities at their level, but association like the NMRA have always been a great path in the preparation process for rodeo contestants to make it up the ladder. So in your process of looking back at what worked and what didn’t work. Make sure to take time to look at all the options and remember that having the best partners possible on your team is one of the first steps in making sure your are doing all you can to be successful. Tom Threepersons The Story of Two Persons

om Threepersons was an Indian who became famous. Research reveals numerous stories claiming he was a Cherokee, or perhaps a Blood (Kainai) Indian; He was born in Oklahoma (1889) or perhaps Canada (1888); he was a mounted policeman, tracker and rodeo star in Canada; a famous lawman and prohibition officer in El Paso, Texas; a cowboy in New Mexico and a successful rancher in Canada; he had a leather gun holster named after him and won the World Bronc Riding Championship of 1912; his name was spelled “Threepersons” or perhaps “Three Persons” and he died poor in 1969, in Arizona, or possibly a rich man during 1949 in Canada. Many accomplishments (and contradictions) for only one man! How did he do so much, making his name a permanent part of Western history and lore? A closer examination of the facts reveals there were, ironically, TWO different “Tom Threepersons,” alive and making headlines at the same time. Their stories are often mistakenly jumbled into one. One was a rodeo star, who had a few encounters with the law—the other was a lawman, who had a few encounters with rodeo. First let us look at the rodeo star. Tom Threepersons the rodeo star was actually “Tom Three Persons,” a Canadianborn, Blood Indian (often referred to as “First Nations” people in Canada) whose

primary language was Blackfoot. His birth father was said to be an Anglo whiskey peddler and trader who abandoned his mother when it was found out she was with child. His mother, a Blood, soon married another and Tom was raised by his step father, “Three Persons,” also a Blood. He grew up on the reservation where he learned to hunt, fish, farm, ranch and ride wild horses. When he was a teenager, his mother sent him to an Indian boarding school where he learned the English language and was baptized into the Catholic faith. After graduation, Tom married his high school sweetheart and returned to the reservation to settle down and raise cattle. However, during the many roundups held across the reservation, he became known as an outstanding cowboy, a fine roper, and most particularly, a superb bucking horse rider. It was because of these skills friends encouraged Tom to enter his first rodeo at Lethbridge, Canada in 1908. He placed well and returned the next year, winning first. A new career, rodeo, was now in the cards for Tom. It has been written that the lawman, Tom Threepersons, once served in the Canadian Royal Mounted Police. Research shows there was never any “Threepersons” or “Three Persons” enlisted with them. However, Tom Three Persons, the rodeo cowboy was said to have worked for them as a tracker at times. He was also reportedly a regular “customer” of theirs behind bars as he liked his whiskey and fun—sometimes a little too much. He was supposedly in this exact position (incarcerated for drinking too much) in late August of 1912 when his life was changed forever. Guy Weadick, an American rodeo and wild west show producer was putting together the very first Calgary Stampede to be held in the first part of September, 1912. It was quite a production, with the best ropers and riders from Canada and the United Stated invited to see who would be the “Worlds Champion” in each event. Weadick had heard of Tom Three Persons (or probably knew him) because by then, Tom was a well-known local

bronc rider. At the time, Tom had been traveling with the Addison Day Wild West Show and was billed as “The Famous Indian Rider.” When it came time for the Calgary Stampede, it has been said that Weadick sprung Tom from jail so he could compete. Other reports claim the Mounties just let him out because they knew he was a great bronc rider (he often broke rank horses for them while in jail). Whatever the case may be, Tom would leave the Stampede as the first ever World Champion being of Indian (First Nations), and also of Canadian descent. In those days, there was a famous bucking horse called Cyclone who had gone unridden in over one-hundred attempts. He had thrown off the very best American and Canadian cowboys every time they drew him. After advancing to the final round, as fate would have it, Tom Three Persons (relatively unknown to the world) would draw Cyclone, the worldfamous bucking horse. At the end of a legendary ride, still talked about to this day, Tom would become the World Champion Bronc Rider and forever be remembered in rodeo history. He was now a celebrity!

Years later, Weadick was quoted by the Canadian Cattleman magazine, “Three Persons hit Cyclone in both shoulders with his spurs—and hard. Cyclone wasn’t used to such treatment. He reared high and went into his usual pattern of bucking, but Three Persons kept applying the steel. Cyclone got mad and really started in to buck and did everything on his list to try and unseat the rider who kept hitting him with his spurs every jump. The horse finally quit bucking and stood still.” For many years after that famous ride, Tom continued to rodeo with success, becoming legendary north of the border. He invested his winnings wisely, building up a large herd of cattle. He also raised and trained Thoroughbred race horses. As a testament to his success, at the time of his death in 1949, it is reported his estate was worth over eighty-thousand dollars, a whopping sum for the day! Tom Three Persons remains one of the best-known Canadian Cowboys to this day and is often referred to as “Alberta’s most famous Cowboy.” He remains an inspiration to generations of Canadian Indians and was posthumously inducted

into the Canadian Cowboy Hall of Fame and the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum and Hall of Fame (in Fort Worth, Texas). Much of what Tom Three Persons, the Canadian rodeo star, accomplished in his lifetime however is often attributed to Tom

Historic Trading Post Traces Roots Back to Old West WESTERN TRADING POST started as a branch of the Foutz Trading Post which opened in the Tuba City area of Northern Arizona in 1877. Around 1903 the Foutz family relocated to Kirkland, NM where they continued to expand the business. Throughout the 1900s the family operated several trading posts in Indian Country, many of which continue to this day. Several years ago a branch of the Foutz family opened a trading post in historic downtown Casa Grande, AZ. In 2010 it was purchased by Jim and Bobbi Olson and Betty Whiteley. They caught their final steer in 8.08 seconds and finished the roping with a time of 31.66 seconds on four steers. The pairing won $3,980, trophy Gist spurs and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second place in the Average was Sammy Jo Fernlund from Bonanza, Oregon and Jason Duby from Nampa, Idaho. Third place went to Shawn Wexler and Kyle Conway. Shawn Wexler used his momentum from the #13 and carried forth into the #12 Division. He and partner Clyde Gasser both from Wickenburg, Arizona were high team back. Second place was Ross Gosney and Terry Edgmon with a time of 35.80 seconds on four steers. Third place in the Average was Jim Wales and John Bassett. The Duke City Classic produced by Zamora Roping Productions took place right after Thanksgiving on November 29 thru December 1, 2013. Team ropers enjoyed the competition inside the Horsemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Arena. The first roping of the weekend was the Open Division. Seth Hall from Fairacres, New Mexico teamed up with Eddie Nieto of Los Lunas, New Mexico to win the Average. The pair roped five steers in 40.60 seconds and received $1,198 plus points for the Priefert US Open Tour. Second place was the team of Bode Baize and Corban Livingston with a time of 49.23 seconds on five steers. Third place went to Chance Keihne and Reno Eddy. The Incentive winners of the roping were Baize and Livingston. The champions of the #15 Division were Bode Baize of Anthony, New Mexico and Pedro Maestas from Tome, New Mexico. NRS November Saddle Roping

ith two NRS trophy saddles awarded to high point ropers and buckles to the average winners, 206 teams spent their Saturday November, 9, at the NRS Training Center with one goal in mind. The roping was split into #8, #9. #10, and #11 teams, points were awarded to first and second in the round and 1st10th in the average. After a long day of roping and a total

Guevara also clinched the average in the #8 along with Martin Sullivan with a time of 36.63 on three to receive buckles and check for $950.00. The #9 Buckle winners were, Leon Plascencia and Dakota Manning with a 27.39 on three, the team split $1,139.00. It’s Cowboytown!

ou might be thinking of what they call Las Vegas during the National Finals Rodeo, or you might be looking in-between the seat of the truck for the Brooks and Dunn CD, but this time we are talking about Zamora Roping Production’s “Cowboytown” at Eleven Mile Corner in Eloy, AZ. Zamora Roping Productions is in Arizona for the winter and has a long list of things going on. Kenny and crew have been working hard on their new facility located at 7825 Eleven Mile Corner Road in Eloy, AZ. The new “Cowboytown” facility is located just 4.5 miles south of the Pinal County Fair Grounds. The long term plans for the new facility are to end up being what Kenny likes to refer to as a “winter roping camp”. “We are in phase II of the overall plan.” Says Kenny Zamora, owner of Zamora Roping Productions

and Cowboytown. “There is still work to do to the facility, but we will be kicking off a number of events this winter at the new location, as well as holding some of our annual events in Casa Grande at the Rodeo Grounds.” The new facility currently has RV hookups, stalls and of course the arena. “Our long term plan includes expanding on what we have there currently as well as adding some additional amenities as we go along.” Added Kenny. The schedule at Cowboytown will kick off with a Round Robin Series on January 11th, 18th and 25th. “This series is going to be a good series for the ropers.” Says Zamora. “It will also help us make sure we have everything working the way we want at our new facility.” There will be other ropings taking place throughout the winter at Cowboytown as well.

In addition to the events taking place at Cowboytown, Zamora Roping Productions has a number of ropings on the schedule in Casa Grande as well. February 1st will be the Saddle and Trailer roping like was held last year, and the month of March will be busy with a Truck Roping on March 1st and a USTRC Qualifier on March 14th, 15th, and 16th. These events will be held at the Casa Grande Rodeo Grounds. So if you are looking for a place this winter to get out of the cold for a while and enjoy some great roping, make sure to head down to the central Arizona area and check out “Cowboytown”. Joseph McConnel Makes It Two Years in a Row at the 30th Annual Bull Riding Extraordinaire.

he Baca Rodeo Company made its way to Farmington, New Mexico for the 30th Annual Bull Riding Extraordinaire event, one of the biggest open bull riding events in the country. The Extraordinaire had the crowd on the edge of their seats as 128 bull riders competed against some of the best bulls in the Southwest. The Extraordinaire took place November 29 -30 at the McGee Park Coliseum in Farmington, New Mexico. Produced by the Casper Baca Rodeo Company, this event has become one of the banner events for bull riders to attend. This year the $3,000 added money made for some great payoffs as well as the opportunity to walk away as the “Extraordinaire” Champion! This year it was like “Deja Vu” as last year’s champion Joseph McConnel scored and 87 point ride, just one point less than the 88 point ride he won it with last year. That score took Joseph McConnel of nearby Bloomfield, New Mexico to the winners circle for the second year in a row. His high marked ride earned him $3,402 in cash, and of course the title of 2013 “Extraordinaire” Champion. The second and third place victory was tied by Ivan Yazzie of Tohatchi, NM. And Coely

Harrison of Moriarty, NM. They both posted an 86.5 point ride to win a little more than $2,500 in cash each. Fourth, fifth and sixth place was tied by Taushoney Slim of Tonalea, AZ, Ezekul Mora of Wiggens, CO and Frank Arrhuletta of Durango, CO. They each posted 85 point rides and took home $1,176. Jacob Spencer of Blanco, NM and Justin Granger of Tuba City, AZ finished out the leader board with a tie for seventh and eighth with an 84.5 point ride and won $315 each. As history repeated itself, the production and entertainment of the “Extraordinaire” was stellar as always. The Casper Baca Rodeo Company kept the excitement turned up loud from beginning to end and like any of their events, the action was non-stop. Congratulations to Joseph McConnel for the second big win in a row and to The Baca Rodeo Company for another great bull riding event!

Bosque Farms Awards 2013 Scholarships

eginning in 2010, Bosque Farms Junior Rodeo has given Scholarships to high school seniors. These scholarships are designed to reward students for their accomplishments in and out of the arena and to encourage them to continue their education. Over the past 4 years $5,600 has been

awarded in scholarships to 10 recipients. In order to qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be a graduating senior of the current school year and be a contestant in good standing for the current rodeo season. This year’s scholarship recipients where Abigail Woodmansee and Lorenzo Lara.

“Rodeo is a sport, a lifestyle and something that once you have been involved in you will never know how to live without it ever again. Rodeo is my number on teacher. I have learned to be responsible, have self-discipline, and to be a good sport because things do not always go in my favor.” Abigail was presented with a $1,000 scholarship.

Abigail will graduate from high school in the spring of 2014. She is actively involved in 4H, showing cattle and baking. Abigail served as the Santa Fe county Rodeo Princess and Rio Arriba County Princess. She also is the intern for her schools auto shop and works at a salon. Abigail stated in her application,

Lorenzo Lara Lorenzo will graduate from Valencia High School in the spring of 2014 with a 4.1 GPA. He is an inductee into the National Honor Society, is the Student Team Roping Director for the New Mexico High School rodeo Association, and a member of Future Farmers of

Western Fun Rides In With The 66th Annual Gold Rush Days February 13-16, 2014 - “Out Wickenburg Way!”

his event celebrates the town’s origins as a ranching and gold mining center in the days before there was a Phoenix. The heritage event was founded 65 years ago, and today Gold Rush Days draws tens of thousands of visitors, during the 3½ days of activities. Festivities begin on Thursday, February 13, with the Brown’s Amusements Family Fun Carnival opening at 4:00 p.m. in the downtown district. Joining us in Wickenburg for special concert performances are The Three Redneck Tenors, Thursday, February 13 and Friday, February 14 the show starts at 7:30 p.m. at $35 a ticket at the Del E. Webb Center for the Performing Arts. Join Billy Bob, Billy Joe and Billy Billee for big city music tunes and down home laughs. The second concert performance at The Webb Center is again at 7:30 p.m. The parade on Saturday at 10:00 a.m., is one of the largest in Arizona, with over 100 entries including close to 1,000 horses, classic autos, floats, marching bands, and youth groups participating. Lake Mehallic and Savannah Laos Dominate the Arizona High School Season Opener in Payson

Lake and Savannah still live in the same area that they met, are friends and are competing to be number one in the event of Barrel Racing. The Arizona High School Rodeo Association (AHSRA) 2013 Season kicked off this year in Payson Arizona September 21 and 22nd. It was an exciting weekend, a total of 58 of the toughest horse and barrel racer combinations ran in the AHSRA Season Opener. This year’s competition was fierce. ake Mehallic and Savannah Laos strive for the same goal. A chance to win a spot to the NHSRA Finals in July 2014. Both girls live in the Tucson area, are 15 years old and Sophmores in High School. Lake and Savannah first met at the Old Historic Steam Pump Ranch in Oro Valley, AZ. They were each boarding their horses there at that time, and both have known each other since they were 5 years old. At that time they had no idea that Barrel Racing would be their love and passion. Now several years later

goal is to rank in the top 4 in Arizona which would qualify them to go the High School National Finals this year and to have a chance to win the national title. Currently the two are number one and two. Mehallic at number 1 with 19 points in the standing and Laos at number 2 with 15 points. The two barrel racers not only share being from the same area, but are two of the toughest Barrel Racing competitors on the schedule to date. This could be their year for the two friends to fill their dream. So far the odds are in their favor as the drive and intensity these young ladies bring to barrel racing seems to bring the crowd to their feet. When Laos was asked how she felt about her runs in Payson, she replied, “It VSA IN HOUSE PROOF was the toughest Rodeo I have ever run in with the best horses and the most skilled riders”. Both Mehallic and Laos are hoping their great start with this year’s Season Opener is a very good indication of a bright future.

the LVCVB can replace the NFR with during that time of the year that is even remotely as profitable. For them to say that they don’t make any money off the event is likely true. But then the LVCVB isn’t supposed to make money. Their function is only to insure the businesses they represent make money… and the NFR makes them a lot of it. That said, the only pressure the LVCVB faces that would cause them to cave to the demands of the PRCA comes from the casinos. And I’m pretty sure the casinos in Las Vegas are comfortable with the negotiating skills of the LVCVB who seems to have managed to help them scrape out a profit so far. On the other hand, the backlash the PRCA faces by moving the event is much greater. It’s not going to make much difference to the contestants. They are going to go wherever the event is held, and though they may have their preferences... they will follow the money. No, the real backlash will be from the fans. Yes… the thousands of people who travel to Las Vegas each year to attend the NFR. If the PRCA thinks by moving the event to Orlando or anywhere else, that the fan base will remain the same, they ARE crazy. Surely they understand that as great a spectacle as the NFR is, it’s the “packaging” that Las Vegas provides

actionplusphoto@yahoo.com that has made the NFR the shining star of success. C’mon… does anyone really think they would take the risk of killing their cash cow?... Pffffffff! So now that both sides have made their first move, how will it all shake out? Well, if you missed it above, it’s going to shake out the way the LVCVB wants it to shake out. I think it’s entirely possible this all may be resolved before you even read this. More likely, however, the PRCA will make some kind of half-hearted stand, coming to the realization that they really have no choice. And in the interest of making a deal in good faith, the LVCVB will strike a deal that allows the PRCA to not only save face, but will allow them to justify… in their collective hearts… that they fought the good fight for their membership. Ultimately, some kind of compromise will be struck… a compromise that was not actually a compromise for the LVCVB at all… instead, merely the last point in the outmaneuvering process. Thanks to the LVCVB, the PRCA will be protected from itself, and we can all look forward to seeing the NFR in Las Vegas for years to come… well… most will look forward to it. Happy New Year,

Although it rained through the roughstock events that were held outside, fun was had by all and great memories were made. Dry Camping (pre-pay deadline is January 10, 2014) Park/Camp in designated parking/camping areas only. There will be a $10.00 (pre paid) $15.00 (after January 10, 2014) dry camp per day per rig fee for everyone regardless if you camp or not. If you do not pay the dry camp fees your organization will be billed and held responsible for charges. You must keep your camp/parking area clean. Poop happens, when it does clean it up! Water & Refuse Disposal Clean drinking water for your horses is located in the stable area as-well as through-out flagged areas of the dry camp area. Please do not block these areas with your trucks or trailer they have to be accessible to everyone. There is a waste dump area for RV’s that are not hooked up but require dump prior to departure. The cost is $10.00 to dump, you can pre-pay for this service aswell and be issued a permit to dump by the parks office. Fire Restrictions Campfires and charcoal are not allowed, you may bring a gas grill if you choose, or there are many charcoal grills available through-out the park for your use. Adult Beverages & Glass Containers The consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited at the facility during this event. Please do not bring any type of beverage that is in a glass bottle. As with any event, please observe the signs for parking and camping – this helps keep the event running smoothly and safely! We can accept credit card over the phone, if you make a reservation by fax or email you will have 7 days to send in payment via money order made out to “Graham County Park”, if you payment is not received within 7 days you will forfeit the reservation.

Wow, what a record breaking year NM-1 has had. We held a total of 29 races this year and averaged over 100 entries each time. Our fund raising was phenomenal with our first ever youth tack sale netting $1,300, our Rodan + Fields added money campaign raised over $1,500, and of course we raised $5,000 to fight cancer. In March we will have a total of $17,500 added to our Super Race weekend. Be sure to put March 14-16 on your short list of races not to miss. A huge thank you to Christine Lewis, Leanne and Haley Wolfe, and Cookie Pickens for their hard work and great advice. Our races are a smooth running machine with Robin Price, Josh Carpenter and Mark Heath taking care of entries, announcing and computer work.

En route to winning the 2013 Wrangler NFR average with 138.15 on Rodeo, Roping, Western Gear and Accessories 10 runs, she broke Jill Moody’s record of 138.26 from back in 2010. Winning the NFR average was an important goal for Cervi, who also won it in 1999 and 2009. “It is special because getting around these barrels 10 times and being faster than anyone else here is so very, very hard to do,” said Cervi, who credits the horse she trained with the title. “I am so proud of my horse and the consistency it takes to accomplish winning the average. I just feel it is an important way to finish what I started when I arrived here.” In addition to winning the average, Cervi was consistent at getting checks. In fact, she became only the fifth barrel racer in history to place in all 10 rounds of the NFR, and the first since Kristie Peterson in 1997. The 10th round win went to Lisa Lockhart with a 13.88 run which was one hundredth of a second better than Jane Melby who placed third. Sabrina Ketcham, Cervi, and Shada Brazile finished out the top six in the round. Brazile was the only other NFR barrel racer to have 10 cleans runs. She finished second in the average with 140.30 at her first NFR as a competitor. It was fun to see this year’s NFR I Train your horse in a controlled setting barrel racers dress flashy. ’ve read countless articles on ways to make your feed last when drouth has you in a death grip but not one of them mentions the cheapest, easiest and most prevalent way to stretch your grass. That is, simply cutting a hole in your fence and letting your cows graze on your neighbor’s place. If you run a cow-calf operation there is an additional bonus: your cows will probably get bred to a higher VSA quality set of bulls. IN HOUSE PROOF A man we called One Thumb ran 200 cows with just a homeplace of 600 overgrazed dryland acres. He did so by spilling them on to four neighboring ranches. One Thumb’s ranch looked like the second coming of the dust bowl and he didn’t have to prod his cattle to look for feed elsewhere, they stampeded on to neighboring range.

The neighbors were very discreet in dealing with One Thumb. Now myself, I don’t believe in being discreet; I don’t mince words or vegetables. To me, tact is horse gear. But, I admit, I never had a neighbor like One Thumb. The neighbors were so careful because One Thumb was a huge, mean man who supposedly lost his thumb in a knife fight years ago. This is not the kind of character you want to irritate. He also had a lovely wife who often cooked and delivered delicious berry cobbler to the neighbors. The neighbors came up with some novel ways to deal with the involuntary pasturing of One Thumb’s cattle. One Christmas neighbor #1 wrapped up a set of brand new fence pliers along with a box of staples, put a bow on top and mailed it to One Thumb anonymously, along with a set of instructions on how to use them. At least neighbor #2 had the courage to deliver his present in person. He gave One Thumb a brand new pup out of his great working Australian Shepherd bitch with hopes that when the dog got older it would make it easier for One Thumb to CRX’D separate and gather his cattle and take them back home. But the pup hated life at One Thumb’s place and kept running back to her birthplace, so now neighbor #2 had to feed One Thumb’s cows and his dog. Neighbor #3 got up the gumption to send One Thumb an invoice for 12 months of grazing for 200 cows but this worked as well the fence pliers and the pup. Neighbor #4 posted “quarantine” signs, faked a letter from his veterinarian and sent a trichomoniasis testing kit for One Thumb to test his cattle for the abortion disease. But One Thumb didn’t care, his cows had been infected with Trich for years. In fact, he figured he was the source of the new outbreak on neighbor #4’s place. No one wanted a range war and they all wanted a peaceful settlement. Neighbor #2 even volunteered to sell his place to a bison breeder and run off with One Thumb’s wife in retaliation, and they all mulled over the possibility of just slapping their brand on all of One Thumb’s calves that were grazing on their places at branding time. But these folks weren’t crooks or rustlers, they just wanted their ranches back. The problem was solved when One Thumb put to rest the old bromide that only the good die young, when he keeled over from a heart attack while pushing some cows onto #3’s place. This came as quite a shock to all who knew him because no one had even considered the remote possibility that One Thumb had a heart. To make sure he was really dead the neighbors all attended One Thumb’s funeral and listened to the glowing praise the preacher heaped on the miserable man, proving yet again that the biggest metamorphosis a person undergoes is between the time they die and when their eulogy is delivered. The neighbors managed to stifle their guffaws when the preacher listed all of One Thumb’s noble traits, but when he came to the part about One Thumb being such a good neighbor, #3 asked neighbor #1 in a voice the entire congregation could hear, “Are we at the right funeral?” wwwLeePittsbooks.com
