ell, if you’re a regular reader of The All-Around, and holding it in your hands, to announce a change in the format is pointing out the obvious. I have to say, first off, the change from a tabloid style to a magazine style is pretty exciting for all of us. Since I’m actually writing this before I get to hold the new format in my hand, I have to admit there are mixed feelings of both exciting anticipation and nostalgia. Having produced volumes and volumes in the tabloid format, it’s a little strange to think that I’m never going to see those pallets of tightly packed bundles of ragged-edged newspapers, waiting to be loaded from the bay doors of the printing warehouse, still glowing with the smell of drying ink. I’ll miss it a little bit. Still, change for the sake of change is not a logical approach as I see it, so the question is, why? The short answer is that it’s simply time. The longer version is that the change to a new format, solves some problems inherent with a three-section tabloid, but more importantly allows for the implementation of some new and more progressive features that are in the works. Hopefully, forever gone are the days of missing sections. Not to kick our good friends at the post office when they’re down, but it’s been a problem since the beginning, and as time has moved forward, it’s only gotten worse. I’ll not say anymore out of fear that they won’t be delivered at all, but I’ve often wondered where all those missing

sections have ended up over the years. Does the post office have a place where they keep them, or do they simply just vanish…kinda like all those single socks that have mysteriously disappeared over the years?... guess we’ll never know. Of course there’s an upside to the format change as well. While I’m not going to open up the whole can of beans at this time, readers can be on the lookout for future enhancements that will coincide with a format change. And when I say “enhancements” I’m talking about real and applicable upgrades that will take The All-Around to a new level with regard to serving the needs of its readers, particularly those who use this publication as a tool for competing. Like just about all publications these days, The All-Around has, for some time, featured an online version (wspubs.com/AllAround). That’s all fine and good, but not really anything earthshaking. What we have in store for the future however, really is. Both event producers as well as competitors will be able to utilize the information in The All-Around, both print and online versions to more effectively and efficiently link the two together…oh, and by the way…at no cost. Like I mentioned, change for the sake of saying you changed something is worthless, but change for the sake of further promoting the sport by way of enhancing participation will result in really making a difference. With that, I, along with everyone here at Western Sports Publishing, present to you, The All-Around… hope you enjoy it.

World Series of Team Roping Finale – Looking Back Campidilli and Brown Claim Cactus 13 “Glory” Back in the Money The Pro-Am was truly one of the toughest World Series Ropings of the year with an 80% catch ratio and only four seconds separating 44th call from high team back. The top team to the short round, Tyson Campidilli of Vinita, Oklahoma and Cody Brown of Oolagah, Oklahoma , had to be 8.60 to maintain their number one spot. After the dust settled and the final flag dropped, a time of 7.91 put the capstone on a $200,000 payday for the Oklahoma team. Tyson has been winning a lot in this past year, as he placed a couple of times at the USTRC Finals. Tyson is a switch hitter and is equally comfortable heading as heeling. When we caught up with him following the roping, he was laughing about the fortunes of team roping, “I was king of the mountain on Wednesday, and on Thursday missed three heel shots in the #11”. Cody Brown, a saddle maker, celebrated his one year wedding anniversary in Vegas two days before his big win. He brought his own cheering squad to Vegas with him and said, “that scream was my mom”. Cody confessed that he had second thoughts about the big entry fees, but his friends Larmon and Amos, the team that won the #13 the previous year had, “assured me that this would be a roping contest and not a drawing contest, and they were right.” He also had a secret weapon. He borrowed Clint Peverley’s super horse “Glory” that placed in the top five of every roping event at the AQHA world show, and with this win the horse had over $175,000 won on him this year. James Gililland of Belen, NM and Cody Wilson from Capitan, NM stepped up their game in the short round and stopped the clock in a 7.62 to secure them the reserve championship and $140,000 in team earnings.

With Priefert as a partner USTRC’s goal is to elevate the Open program to new heights, starting with some exciting changes in 2012.” For several years now, the US Open has only allowed the top 60 headers and heelers along with those ropers that have attended a minimum of eight Sanctioned events to enter. In 2012 the qualification will change for that entry. It will be open to any current USTRC member that is classified as at least a #7 Header and #8 Heeler and attended at least one Sanctioned USTRC event or one approved Affiliate USTRC event. The entry fees will change to $2,000 per roper and will feature the roping talents of the best team ropers in the world. The roping will remain a six head average, with five full go rounds, and the top 20 teams will compete in the short round. One outstanding deal

for Open ropers that will change is that the Priefert US Open at the Cinch National Finals of Team Roping will be a 100% payback roping. That is right, 100% of the money will be paid back in the US Open, so ropers will be roping for all of their money with nothing coming out for the stock or production. The USTRC will also pay for the entire prizeline, so it will essentially be more than 100% coming back to the ropers. “This is really exciting and I am glad the USTRC is doing something like this,” said 2011 PRCA World Champion Header Turtle Powell. “I like the increase in fees and taking the qualification out of entering. Sometimes we just cannot get to enough ropings, but the US Open is certainly a roping that an Open roper wants to enter.” The USTRC and Priefert will also keep the Priefert US Open Tour in place as well. Points will be available only to teams that qualify to the short rounds of the listed qualifying ropings and will be awarded through tenth place. These points will only be available to headers with a TRIAD Classification of #7 and above and to heelers with a TRIAD Classification of #8 and above. The seven USTRC Regional Finals and the National Finals Preliminary will count for double the points and the Priefert US Open will count triple the points. “I also like the fact that the USTRC is keeping the tour in place,” added Powell. “It is great for Open ropers that don’t rodeo full time and it is great for those that choose to chase it. I really think this is a win-win situation for everyone.” The year end bonus of $10,000 to the high point header and heeler and $5,000 to the reserve high point header and heeler will be awarded after the Priefert US Open at the Cinch National Finals of Team Roping. This money will be awarded by the USTRC. Another new twist to the Open Program is that USTRC is joining forces with some of the major Open team roping events across the country to allow them to award points and

count toward the Priefert US Open Tour. Events like the Windy Ryon Memorial Team Roping, SandHills Classic, the BFI, the Wild Fire Open to the World, and the Mike Cervi Memorial Team Roping are on board with the new Priefert Open Tour program. The BFI produced by Ullman Peterson Events is also going to affiliate their event this year and is also pleased to be a part of the Priefert US Open Tour. “I really like the concept of bringing all the major Open Ropings across the country together. It really is a good deal for Open ropers and for the industry,” said Daren Peterson of Ullman Peterson Events. “We are extremely excited to be a part of the program and also like the fact that we will be able to award Priefert US Open Tour points to the top ten finishers in the average of the BFI.” George Aros, producer of the Mike Cervi Memorial Team Roping, also agrees that the new Open Program is a good deal for everyone. “I really think the USTRC is on the right track in making these improvements to the Open,” said Aros. “We are glad to be a part and excited to play a part in helping the industry as a whole come closer together.” “The changes we have made to the Open program will make it easier for ropers to qualify to the Priefert US Open Championships, which should attract more of the best teams in the industry and thus have a phenomenal payout with 100% guaranteed payback,” stated Bray. “Bringing all of the major open events together is a concept I think the open ropers and fans will like. It will further showcase the sports greatest talent and make for an exciting finish to the Priefert Open Tour race.” The New Open Program is something that everyone is excited about and should be a real benefit to contestants and producers alike. It will also be a benefit to those team roping enthusiast that like to watch the best of the best compete against the best of the best.

Chuck Sheppard—One Tough Hand

egarded as “the toughest four-event cowboy around,” 1946 world champion team roper Chuck Sheppard was one of the old-time greats. He carried Cowboy Turtles Association (CTA) #68 a number held the rest of his life. Of course, CTA eventually became known as the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA). He also won a world championship in calf roping during 1951 in the International Rodeo Association and twice finished up as the reserve all around champion. He competed in every event in rodeo at one time or another, but calf roping, team roping, bulldogging and saddle bronc riding were his main events. The calf roping and bronc riding events were where he thrived in the early days. In an interview, Chuck once said, “I only quit riding bulls and bareback ‘cause I’d get sored up and it made my other work tough.” Along with working every event, Chuck also judged rodeos for over 25 years. One year, at Cheyenne, he entered the steer wrestling and steer roping events and judged the others! Amazing! He was also honored to flag the team roping at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) and the steer roping at the National Finals Steer Roping (NFSR). Chuck was inducted into the National

Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Hall of Fame in 1985, the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2000, the Phippen Museum’s Arizona Ranchers & Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2008 and was awarded the Ben Johnson award for rodeo excellence in 2001. First and foremost however, Chuck Sheppard was a cowboy… and a goodnatured one at that! Born on a ranch near Globe, Arizona in 1916, he was a cowboy from the word go. Chuck’s parents had traveled from Texas in a wagon. They set up their own ranch on Mescal Creek southeast of Globe in the Pinal Mountains, an area so rough and remote, the only way in or out, with or without supplies, was to pack in by horse or mule. Good cow dogs are more practical than a fence in that country. His dad, Horace (a.k.a. Shep), thought nothing about putting Chuck on a horse at a very young age. He expected his son to “keep up.” By the age of nine, he was riding the rough string horses to gentle them down for his little brother and mother to ride. He learned to catch and “lead” wild cattle as a mere boy. By the time he was a teenager, he was one tough cowboy, able to do things with horses and cattle even some seasoned hands are unable to do. Younger brother, Lynn Sheppard, once wrote, “Dad and Chuck roped the wild cattle on broncs and tied them to trees.

They were led out the next day... the Pinal Mountains were covered with brush… dogs were a necessity.” During the “dirty 30s,” at 16 years of age, Chuck moved to California to be with his mother, hoping to find work there. What he did find was an event that changed his life forever – he entered a rodeo at Hayfork, California. Chuck once said, “I won some money, had fun doing it and I think that’s what amazed me so much.” For the next 25 plus years Sheppard’s life revolved around rodeo. He became known as “Mr. Everything.” As a testament to his all-around abilities, he won numerous titles at both ends of the arena. Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Pendleton in calf roping and Salinas, Tucson, Chicago, Los Angeles in bronc riding and all-around titles at Denver, Tucson, Prescott, Lewiston and Boise to name a few. But winning titles was not first in Chuck’s book – putting food on the table was. He rodeo’d because it was a way to make a living. Chuck’s youngest daughter, Lynda, once said, “Rodeo wasn’t like it is now. Back then we’d get out of school and be gone all summer. You’d stay eight or 10 days in Salinas, drive all night to get to Cheyenne and stay in someone’s home. They did not have hotels (or living quarter trailers) like they do now, they all did it - it was about survival. They worked hard back then.”

“I rode bucking horses for 24 years,” Chuck said. “You can tell that by looking at me. I rode some of the best there ever was and got bucked off some of the sorriest.” Chuck also spent 10 years as a board member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association (RCA), which is what the association was known as between the CTA and PRCA. During that time, he is credited for coming up with the design on the world-champion saddles, among many other accomplishments. In about 1951, the Sheppard family moved from California to Arizona where Chuck spent the rest of his life. In ‘59 he retired from full-time rodeo, although he made the NFR in team roping during 1963 while only competing part time. He used to say, with a smile, “When I was rodeoing, I always ate chicken…not superstitious, it’s just when I did good, I ate the meat, when I did bad, I ate the feathers!” During the late 1950s he went to work for historic K4 ranch near Prescott, Arizona. He worked there until he finally retired at 82 years of age, but he’d stayed

so long he was just like family... he Chuck found success on the track. “I got never really retired. it was a hot day, about 105. When I got back to the truck, probably an hour and a half later, he was nowhere in sight. I loped up to the top of a hill about half a mile distant to scan the country for him; a little worried about him to be honest…he was pretty old then. When I got to the top of the hill, there he was, asleep under a tree with his horse unsaddled. I noticed right away the horse was not sweaty; he had probably ridden straight from the truck to the tree to take a nap! When I woke him up, he said with a grin, ‘Horse got hot, needed to cool him off!’” Chuck was very fond of his family. He and wife Gwen had two daughters, Stella and Lynda and a whole herd of grandchildren, many of whom are well known in rodeo/cowboy circles to this day. Not long after passing on to the next realm in 2005, some of the grandchildren helped organize the “Chuck Sheppard Memorial Roping,” which raises money for the Chuck and Gwen Sheppard memorial scholarship fund. The scholarship is given to students who are enrolled full-time at Yavapai College and seek a degree in agricultural or equine studies programs and are involved in organizations such as FFA, 4-H, Arizona High School Rodeo Association and Arizona Junior Rodeo Association. The event will enjoy its sixth year in 2012. During an interview prior to being inducted into the “Cowboy Hall of Fame” Chuck said, “We’ve had an exciting life – started out with nothing so there was nowhere to go but up…” Jim Olson © 2012

In Memory of Gary Lee Mulholland Gary Lee Mulholland, age 64, passed away January 7, 2012. Gary was born August 8, 1947 in Dayton, Ohio. Gary is survived by his wife of 26 years, Susie; daughter, Tonya Westerman (Ray) of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Chad (Jenny) of Miami, FL; son, Scott; grandchildren, Maegan, Cameron, Cash, Shiann and Jasmine. He is also survived by his father Melvin Mulholland (Jan); brothers,Richard (Marlene), Ronnie (Connie), Tim; sisters, Betty Ann (David) and Patty, and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jane Niemeyer (Vernon), his sister Darlene Adkins, and brothers, John Arbaugh and Wayne Mulholland. He was a Vietnam veteran, USA. He owned and operated Mulholland Plumbing and was the President of Superstition Mountain Promotional Corporation, as well as Chairman of Lost Dutchman Days for 27 years. Memorial services will be held February 4, 2012 at Apache Junction Rodeo Grounds following the rodeo at approximately 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary’s name to Boys & Girls Club of Apache Junction, Apache Junction Little League, Apache Junction Booster Club, Superstition Mountain 4-H, Lost Dutchman Queen Committee and various other youth organizations. Gary’s motto was “Putting Smiles on Kid’s Faces.”

Additionally, artist Craig Morgan acted as a roving reporter for seven “inside the WNFR” episodes produced by GAC to take viewers behind the scenes of the big event. “The connection between country music fans and the rodeo lifestyle has never been stronger,” Hardy said. “Our bringing live coverage of the entire Wrangler NFR has brought hundreds of thousands of new fans to experience both WNFR and GAC.” This year marks GAC’s first as the home of the WNFR, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. GAC also carries the PRCA’s Xtreme Bulls Tour, as well as its championship rodeos. The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo draws nearly 200,000 fans to the Thomas & Mack Arena each year. Noted Rodeo Photographer Serpa Dead At 86 Louise Serpa, a widely respected PRCA photographer for more than 40 years who was often referred to as the “Ansel Adams of rodeo,” died Jan. 5 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 86. Serpa began photographing junior rodeos in 1960 with a $27 camera and three years later became the first female photographer to receive her Rodeo Cowboys Association card. She photographed rodeos all over the Western United States and her work has found its way into private collections and national publications, including the ProRodeo Sports News, People magazine and British Vogue. In 1982, she received a silver buckle for producing the Best Action Photo of the Year from PSN and Frontier Airlines. She was presented the PRCA Excellence in Rodeo Photography Award in 2005 for her body of work. Serpa was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 1999, received the Tad Lucas Award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2002 and entered the Pima County (Ariz.) Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. A collection of Serpa’s best work in the arena was published in the coffee table book Rodeo in 1994, with text by Lonesome Dove author Larry McMurtry. “I love the rodeo – the charge I get from it – the people in it,” Serpa once told the Arizona Daily Star. “I’ve photographed children in junior rodeos and then as full-grown men.”

A tribute to Serpa will be scheduled as part of the Feb. 18-26 La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson; this would have been the 50th time Serpa photographed the action at the event. A collection of Serpa’s images are currently featured in the photo gallery at www.tucsonrodeo.com. She died one day before the opening of a show featuring her work and that of her daughter Mia Larocque – “Spirit of Rodeo Shared in Images” – at the Tucson Airport’s Lower Link Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public. “Her passing represents not only a personal loss, but a professional loss as well,” said Gary Williams, general manager of the Tucson Rodeo. “Louise

did more to promote the sport of rodeo, and specifically the Tucson Rodeo, than anyone.” Serpa is survived by daughters Lauren Serpa and Mia Larocque, and grandson Taylor Grammar.

f you have not noticed already, The All-Around has taken on a new shape. We hope this new format will help your reading experience. There will be fewer pages to fall out and it will take up a little less room on the dash of your truck. We hope you enjoy! Have you noticed anything new in the air around team roping events? Me, neither. It has been a month since the USTRC and the WSTR began to ride together under the same classification system and the sky has not fallen. Both associations have worked hard to cooperate with each other and it seems things are working out pretty well. I have not heard any ropers really complaining, of course there are always a few, but I believe the majority of ropers are encouraged by this common ground. Now, some rodeo news. The NMRA is once again hitting the “Dirt” column. President John Adams doesn’t have to gasp though, as this month, I have nothing but positive’s to say about the association. In fact, after

a recent conversation with Adams, I left pretty excited about this season. Maybe it was his excitement about the future of the NMRA that rubbed off on me, but I can see that silver lining opening up that I am sure cowboys and cowgirls across the state will enjoy. First off, the NMRA has a full boat of directors and that is the starting point for a solid season. Many minds thinking together are always better then one thinking alone - in most cases. Additionally, the NMRA has a new state secretary. This has to be a relief to many. I believe the state secretary is the most important positions of the association. I would also like to wish Janice, the past secretary a great retirement and continue to offer her my friendship. She has been great to the NMRA and to me for many years. Wow – I am out of space – the new format cut into my column this month, but don’t worry, I will hold the rest of my “Dirt” for another day. Until Next Month – “Dirt” Keep it under your feet!

PBR Proctor crowned Touring Pro champion Denver - For Shane Proctor, it was a bittersweet trip. Wednesday night, January 11, 2012, Proctor received one final honor for his accomplishments in 2011 - a bronze trophy as the Touring Pro Division Champion. The overall champion was determined by money earned throughout the TPD season. “It really was an amazing year,” Proctor said. “It’s still new to me. It really was a cool year. It’s probably something that I’ll always cherish. I cherish just going and getting on bulls.” Proctor, who broke his left arm in December, said it was difficult to watch last weekend’s Built Ford Tough Series event on television, and equally hard being at the Denver Coliseum for the Touring Pro Finale on Tuesday and Wednesday knowing he’s still a few months away from competing. ‘It really was an amazing year.’

BFTS as an alternate, while Proctor will be out of competition for another few weeks. Proctor will start physical therapy on Friday, and said he’s about five weeks from the bone in his left arm being healed. Originally, he was scheduled to have one plate and two screws inserted above his elbow to help strengthen the bone. However, doctors discovered more damage, and he wound up with two plates, 15 screws and bone grafts. “They basically rebuilt that bone,” Proctor said. “The bone’s not healed right now, but basically I have enough hardware in there holding everything together. What we’re going to start doing is getting some flexibility and moving my arm.” He added, “It was amazing how much muscle I lost in three weeks. … It’s going to be a process.” Proctor, who has improved his standing every year since debuting in the PBR, finished a career-best ninth in the world in 2011, despite being unable to compete in the final four regular-season events. The

groin injury he suffered in Springfield, Mo., also forced him out of competition after two rounds at the World Finals. He finished first in San Antonio, going 4-for-4 while winning Round 2 and tying for first in Round 3. He ranked seventh in riding percentage (45.33 percent), 10th in bulls ridden (34) and tied for sixth with five round wins. He had a career-best 11 Top 10 finishes and tied his career high with four Top 5 finishes. During the summer break from the BFTS, he won both the Calgary Stampede and the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo en route to winning the PRCA world title. Upon his return, Proctor’s goal will be to ride his way back into the Top 25. He’ll have five injury exemptions, and with the BFTS draw being cut from 40 to 35, he said he’ll “go as hard as possible just because I love getting on bulls and pushing the limits.” “This is not going to be the last of it. The way I look at it, this was a good year and I’m still looking for the great year.”

Dear Members Well… Happy New Year! Having just had our first NMRA board meeting of 2012 once again I am optimistic about the future and excited about all the possibilities this board of directors brings to the table. Lee Knox (Inc TR) Laura Haines (Inc BR) and Chance Barnes (SB) are our three new directors this year and it is obvious that you the members made great choices in these people. They hit the ground running during the board meeting and I think I can speak for the entire board when I say the new energy and fresh perspective they brought with them is encouraging. The primary purpose for this meeting was to interview and ultimately choose a new state secretary for the NMRA. Unfortunately for all of us Janice Aragon seems to think that she needs to retire so that she might have more time to spend with her horses and maybe even Dave? Janice will be sorely missed by many but none more than me. I could not have done this job this last year had it not been for the incredible talent and unbelievable base of knowledge that Janice brings to the table. We are not loosing Janice all together though (thank you Lord) because she has agreed to stay on as our rodeo books auditor and she wants to secretary some rodeos. So I look forward to seeing Janice this year at the rodeos as a secretary sometimes and a contestant more often. I know I speak for everyone when I say: “Janice…. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your loyalty, perseverance, knowledge and most of all your passion. You single handedly steered this association through the worst storm in our history and you did it unselfishly and for very little reward. We will all be forever indebted to you”

We had an exhausting seven hour long board meeting on January 14 in which we interviewed and considered five applicants for the state secretary’s position. I was truly impressed by the field of ladies that applied and the decision was a very difficult one for all of us. I want to thank each and every one of the applicants for putting them selves out there like that and there is no doubt that any one of you would have made a great state secretary. Unfortunately we had to choose one person and so we worked hard well in to the evening and ultimately in my mind made the best choice. So without further ado I present you with our new NMRA state secretary for 2012 and beyond…. Carrie Richardson. Congratulations Carrie, and welcome to the NMRA as the newest member of our staff. Although I do not foresee any obstacles moving forward for Carrie, I am asking everyone to please be kind and give Carrie the opportunity to settle in to this all important job in our association. The other important piece of business discussed at the meeting was the time and place of the NMRA Winter convention. ontestants may only enter five events at each rodeo, including rough stock. All rough stock does count towards year-end All-Around points. However, you do not have to designate and enter the same events at each rodeo. Events may be changed from rodeo to rodeo. Contestants must enter and participate in at least 6 out of 8 of the rodeos before Finals to be eligible for year end prizes. Finals do not count as part of the 6 rodeos. All contestants may enter Finals-you do not have to qualify. There must be at least three contestants in an event for that event to take place. If there are not three entries then contestants will have the option to change events at the rodeo. Rough stock riders – our new director, Travis Sullivan has made it possible to give weekend buckles in each age group. Calf riders, mini bulls and Jr. and Sr. bulls will have separate buckles to run at. Buckles will be awarded to the Average winners each weekend. Please note that the 10-12 rough stock will be riding mini bulls instead of steers. We have updated our rule book – so please read the rules in each event you are entering. We are looking forward to a great year in 2012. We have some great rodeo locations, new faces on the Board of Directors with a lot of fresh ideas and everyone is very excited about the new season. Barrel racers across the region opened their hearts and wallets and raised over $11,000 to help Tam Dean in her battle with cancer. It is wonderful to see the people pulling together and opening their hearts and wallets in times of need. It is a great group of people to be around! Our season came to a close with new member, Becca Kenner making a smoking run at our last race despite the cold and snow, the barrels were hot! Our finals is looking to have some close races for the bragging rights to “Year End Champ” while a couple of runners have their saddles sewn up and can take a breather. Applications Now Accepted for Free Vaccines through Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign Equine rescue and retirement facilities are encouraged to apply for free vaccines through the Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign (UHVRC), a program sponsored by the American Association of Equine Practitioners and Merck Animal Health. The deadline for applications for spring vaccines is Feb. 1. The campaign, which was established in 2008, provides free equine vaccines to rescue and retirement facilities in the United States. To date, more than 15,000 horses have been vaccinated through the program. Qualifying facilities are provided with vaccines to protect against eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE), western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE), rabies and tetanus, as well as equine influenza and equine herpesvirus. To qualify for donated vaccines, facilities must have 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status and abide by the AAEP Care Guidelines for Equine Rescue and Retirement Facilities. Dear Ropers, Do you feel like a million dollars? That is exactly what the USTRC is about to bestow on all of its competing members in 2012. Not to feel like a million dollars, but to present all of you collectively with an actual million dollars in cash! This is a game changer, as it far exceeds anything that has ever been done at the USTRC since the invention of the Shoot-Out. The consequences are going to be truly revolutionary. Why? Because instead of you, the roper, contributing added money to the National Finals Shoot-Out Fund, that money will now be provided solely by the USTRC, and it’s guaranteed to be a minimum of One Million Dollars! From here on out, not one dime of your entry fees will go toward added money at the National Finals of Team Roping (NFTR). For those of you who are unclear on how huge payouts at the NFTR have been previously generated, here is a quick reminder. A critical aspect of USTRC’s success was to create a National Finals event unsurpassed in the amount of money awarded to its National Champions. That goal has been accomplished, signified by the fact that for the last 11 years, over one million dollars of added money has magnified the incredible purses at the USTRC National Finals of Team Roping. Until now, a large portion of that money has come from the roper, in the form of a five percent contribution coming

out of your entry fees at every USTRC sanctioned roping. Your contributions helped to build the National Finals of Team Roping into the sport’s premier event – the largest and richest team roping in the world. In appreciation for all you’ve done, the USTRC is stepping up to contribute all of the added money, and we guarantee to add one million dollars to the NFTR purse. This commitment demonstrates how much faith the USTRC has in this sport and its members. But what exactly does this pledge mean to you? It means cash purses at every sanctioned event will dramatically increase. Based on roper contributions in 2011, over $750,000 more cash will be paid out at sanctioned events per season, without you having to lift a financial finger. That’s the new deal, the revolution USTRC is initiating right now. But the roper is not the only beneficiary. The business of producing team ropings is not an easy road to travel. USTRC producers have a substantial commitment in time, effort and money for every roping they put on, with no guarantee to earn a profit. And ropers, they do HAVE to earn a profit, or they will not be in this business very long. So the USTRC further pledges support of the unsung heroes of our business – the producers. You may not be aware that USTRC producers have also significantly contributed to the National Finals Shoot-Out Fund. In 2011, producers

added over a quarter of a million dollars out of their pocket to the Shoot-Out Fund. In the 2012 season, producers are no longer required to contribute to the Fund. This helps our producers stay in the game so they can continue providing ropers the best productions found anywhere in the sport of team roping. So, the revolution is upon us. The 2012 season marks a historic juncture in USTRC history as we continue our quest to provide greater value to our members. Now, ropers who cannot attend the Cinch NFTR won’t see their money siphoned off to an event he or she cannot attend. But the NFTR remains intact with the enormous cash purses and nominal entry fees that have made the NFTR the preeminent team roping year after year. Now cash purses at sanctioned events will grow by more than an estimated $750,000. You no longer need a math degree and a Cray computer to figure how much of your entry fees go into the roper’s pot. From Leeuary to Pittstober

henever I get the muchappreciated free calendars at the start of every year there are a few months I’d like to tear out right then and there and be done with them. Sadly, I have to go through the process of living through these much-dreaded months. “January” sounds promising enough but then the month actually begins and many folks start the year with a hangover. If that’s not a sign of what’s to come I don’t know what is! How good can a month be that starts out with a bunch of fu-fu flower parades on TV? I’ve always felt January needs a new name that more accurately reflects it’s personality, something like “Depress-uary.” Christmas is over, everyone is grouchy because they’re back at work, and my favorite football teams lose again. Every year I’m convinced that early Alzheimer’s has kicked in because I can never remember to write the correct year on my checks. February isn’t much better. I’ve hated it ever since I was a kid because of Rejection Day, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day. I spend the entire month in confusion, not knowing how many days are in the month, or when we celebrate the dead President’s birthdays. I think we should change our calendar and make all months exactly four weeks long, and then create an all new month out of the days left over. This month would be work-free, tax free and free of all stupid holidays like National Sponge Cake Day. We’d call this new month Leeuary, Pittstober or Pittstember, in honor of its founder. And because there would be no more 29th, 30th of 31st of the month, there’s an added bonus: people born on those days would have no more birthdays! Adding Pittstober to the calendar would be a veritable Fountain of

Youth for many. March is one of my favorite months because Spring and daylight savings time start, no estimated taxes are due and March Madness basketball is on TV. Oh, and I almost forgot, (like I usually do) it also marks the anniversary of when I married my wonderful wife. But the good times don’t last because March is followed by April when we are reminded that we’re really just working for the IRS. The only holidays of note are Easter, when we don’t get any presents, and Earth Day, when environmentalists wring their hands, whine, and act holier than thou. After April the rest of the year is filled with months that only get better and better, building towards the crescendo known as December. In May we finally get to start keeping some of the money we make instead of sending it all to the crooks in Washington D.C, the cold weather is finally behind us, the lambs and yearlings are sold, fishing season opens and there are no expensive holidays like Valentines Day, Christmas, wedding anniversary or birthdays that I have to remember. How much better can it get? Plenty, for summer is about to start. I suppose it’s a carryover from my childhood when school let out for the summer in June, but just the mere mention of the month brings a smile to my face. In July we celebrate the second best holiday by getting to legally light incendiary devices. What more could you ask for in a holiday? And then in August there is our county fair when everyone overindulges in carnival food, over-thehill country music singers, pig races and PRCA rodeo. September is the month when kids go back to school so we are now safe to walk down the sidewalk without being run over by some juvenile delinquent on

a skateboard. Autumn and bull sales begin and the stores decorate for Christmas. Then in October we get to eat bags of chocolate candy that were left over from Halloween. And in November we celebrate our nation’s heritage by pigging out on good food and watching the Dallas Cowboys play. Finally December, my favorite month, rolls around when we celebrate two important birthdays, that of Jesus and followed 24 hours later by my own. Even though I always get combo Christmas/birthday presents you can’t wash the smile off my face all month because people are in a festive mood and the NFR is on television for ten whole days. The only thing that could possibly make December any better is if, instead of being followed by the 31 day depression known as January, it was instead succeeded by Leeuary of Pittstember. wwwLeePittsbooks.com
