Lasso del Sol
hen USTRC team ropers converged on the Westworld Equestrian Center the weekend of January 1 through January 3 they were ready for some Arizona team roping. Scottsdale had it all to offer. Many of the ropers came just because the weather was warmer and winter was taking its toll so roping was a good escape. Regardless, of the reasons, the Lasso Del Sol in Scottsdale was a great place to spend a weekend having some quality fun. For Morgan, Utah heeler Paul Freed, roping is not just fun, it is a passion. It is a passion that involves his whole family and he has been doing it a long time. It was minus six degrees at Freed’s home in Utah when he loaded his horse and headed south. Scottsdale just sounded like a good place to go. Despite his never having much luck at
Scottsdale he decided to go anyway. He always steers away from places where he doesn’t have much luck but this time it just sort of felt right. With family in Queen Creek and girls and wife in tow, the Freed’s headed for the warmer temps of Arizona. With warmer temperatures come good USTRC team roping and that was what Freed and his daughter were craving. “We ended up in Scottsdale,” Freed said. “The Gold Plus roping has always been a favorite of mine and I’ve always had really good luck with that roping. It was sixty or so degrees when we finally unloaded our horses. Sure beats minus six.” Roping with a spur of the moment partner Richfield, Utah header, Sid Ward, Freed was excited about the pairing. They knew each other but had never really roped together. As it turned out Ward and Freed roped together the night before in the #12 and they also came back in the next roping. It was almost as if they were laying a golden brick road toward the #12 Gold Plus. “Sid and I drew really good in every roping,” Freed explained. “My daughter and I both roped well. The GP fits me and I always do well. I guess the fact Sid and I had already done well was a good indicator that we might have a good chance. I don’t go to places where I don’t really do well so to say we were doing good is an accomplishment. He is not my regular partner but without a doubt he may get to be.” Ward and Freed won the Average of the Gold Plus with a time of 33.23 on four head of steers to capture the money. The pair pocketed $20,000 and beautiful Gist championship engraved spurs as well as a USTRC National Gold Plus Shoot-Out worth $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. “That is the biggest USTRC check I have ever won in my life roping,” Freed said excitedly. “And I have been doing this a long, long time. There is no doubt I will be back to Scottsdale to rope again. It
was great.” To add to the excitement of the roping Freed’s daughter, Kailey placed third in the Average with partner, Steen Schumacher. It certainly made the roping a sweet win for the entire family. “It was just so special to have a majority of my family there,” Freed explained. “I have six girls and three of them were at the roping along with my wife and my new sonin-law. It was as thrilling for Kailey to place as it was for me. When everyone is right there to actually see it happen it is very exciting and I was able to hug my wife and receive congratulations from her. It was a very special weekend to say the least.” Freed feels his greatest challenge as a heeler is to follow through and rope your own roping. “It is a huge challenge to execute and rope like you do in practice, Freed elaborated. “ It can get to be a head game and if you learn to hold to your standards and maintain and do your own thing it makes a big difference,” he went on to say. “You have to do your own thing and do what works for you.” Freed takes special pride in his consistency. “I am very consistent,” he explained. “I may not be as fast as some guys but I work hard at being consistent. I try to do what works for me and rope without intimidation. Sid and I just roped our roping and it came together for us.” Freed feels pretty sure he will return to Scottsdate again. There is just something special about an Arizona team roping that puts that much money in your pocket and involves family as well. It certainly makes it a pretty special event. Freed smiles when he talks about Arizona and the USTRC’s ropings; talk about a perfect coupling. “Arizona is amazing. You rope every single day,” he explained. “I just appreciate the USTRC for guaranteeing the kind of payout the Gold Plus has because it is sure my best roping. I wouldn’t change it for anything. The weekend was very special for all of us and I’ll be back in a heartbeat.” continued on page 2
