THE
Competitorial It seems like just last week, I hammered out the February “Competitorial,” introducing the new format change for The All-Around. There’s always a little trepidation that goes along with such a change regarding how it will be received. That said, I have to admit it’s been pretty shocking. The overwhelming positive feedback has far exceeded anything I expected. The emails, phone calls, and letters that have poured in over the past month have served as a reminder of the impact The All-Around has on the thousands and thousands of people throughout the Southwest… and beyond. Of course, I’d be less than honest if I said there wasn’t at least one dissenter. I received an email from a gentleman (name withheld), someone I’ve known for many years, explaining he liked the changes for the most part, listing a number of advantages/improvements he thought the format change addressed. He explained, however, that there was one thing he did not favor. He expressed that although he thought the new magazine format was overall “more readable,” he did not care for the fact that condensing the size from tabloid to magazine, condensed the text in this column and others to the point where they were difficult to read. … Yeah… time kind of stopped… I tried to wrap my brain around what I thought I just read… and then I read it again… and again… to make sure of my interpretation. Like I said, I’ve known the sender of the email personally for some time so there wasn’t any hesitation on my part in responding with a forthright and honest reply. I confessed that as my age is now closer to 50 Cover: Baca Rough Stock Series
than 40, the written word has began to migrate from friend to foe. It all starts with what seems to be an overall dimming of the planet, or at the bare minimum, a conspiracy to make me read things in less than optimum lighting conditions, which I explained, leads to the barking of the question that has become all too familiar in my house, “Can someone turn the damn light on?” To which the usual snickering reply is, “It’s already on, dad.” I continued to explain that undoubtedly like him, I, too, was refusing to accept the fact that a pair of Santa Claus glasses hanging on the end of my nose was necessary. I have to admit I have a pair around somewhere, but I can never find them…which I think explains why so many of them come with a piece of twine attached. I, however, resent the implication that just because my vision is beginning to fade, my memory, as related to where I put things, is fading as well. I just don’t know where they are, that’s all… but I digress. Ultimately however, I had to just square with him. “Look,” I replied, “I realize that in an attempt to hold the magazine at the very outer reaches of your grasp in order to bring the words into focus, it may appear to you that the type is smaller, but its only the size of the pages that have changed, not the size of the type.” I wanted to follow it up with, “Get some reading glasses, you knucklehead.”….but with compassion, didn’t. It was a couple days later, when I received his simple reply. “Oh, don’t I feel stupid.” So, as I look around for my Santa glasses to proof this column out, I just want to thank everyone for all the great feedback and support for the new changes… and if you have not done so yet, check out all our publications (Western Sports Publishing) now available online at wspubs.com. Til next month,

he Baca Rough Stock Series is in full swing and with more than half of this year’s ten rounds in the books, the series has shaped up to be another success story for the long running rough stock event. Although it may not have the same look as it did 10 to 15 years ago or even longer, the attitude of the cowboys, both young and old, is an apparent eagerness for the adrenaline rush that only the Baca Rough Stock Series can deliver. This year’s series, which is once again hosted at the Valencia County Sheriffs Posse in Belen, New Mexico, began on February 4 and will run through March 10-11. Each weekend is packed with two rounds of action that includes events for every age of cowboys and even a few cowgirls. The youngsters of today’s rodeo help keep the action alive in three youth events that include mutton busting, calf riding and steer riding. Stepping up to the older talent of rodeo, the series is true to its heritage with some of the best in the business climbing aboard and competing in the open bull riding, novice bull riding and bucking horse riding, which included ranch bronc

Baca Rough Stock Series Running Strong! riding, saddle bronc riding and bareback riding. Already the action in all of these events has been great. High-marked rides, blown out of the saddle wrecks and cute as a button kids taming their sheep, the Baca Series has once again captivated many spectators in the Central Rio Grande Valley. With a few more rounds to go, this year’s competitors are gearing up for a few more rides on top of some of the best bulls and broncs in the business. Without a doubt, the Baca Series has once again caught the attention of the rodeo world. The Baca Rough Stock Series has been a staple in the world of rodeo for many years and boasts that it is, “The Bareback Riding action at the 36th Annual Baca Series that is often imitated but Rough Stock Series never duplicated.” This rings spring and summer rodeo season, true and those who have stopped by the while getting a chance to fill their event over the past few weeks have to pocket with cash payouts each agree. The event gives spectators plenty weekend. In addition, the prestigious of great rodeo action and contestants titles of ‘Baca Rough Stock receive a chance to warm up for the Champion’ are on the line and plenty of prizes up for grabs. Not only are buckles awarded to round winners in all of the events including the youth, but competitors are riding towards the Average championships where even more prizes will be given out. Average champions of the series will take home championships trophy buckles, while reserve champions win trophy watchbands. Needless to say there are great prizes and lots of cash to be awarded throughout the event and the cowboys in competition are riding hard each weekend to earn their share. This year’s event will mark 36 years in existence for the series and you can bet there are a whole lot of retired competitors who are wishing they still had it in them to head to Belen and drop their name upon the entry pages. Over the years, thousands of contestants have climbed aboard some of the best rodeo stock in the country at the The Classic event of Saddle Bronc Riding at the 36th Annual Baca Rough Stock Series series and made incredible rides that

could stand up against any event anywhere in the world. As the largest rough stock event in the United states, the series has played an integral role in the sport of rodeo. Past world champions made their mark at the event and from the looks of today’s contestants, many more are on their way to stardom inside the rodeo arena. Casper Baca and the Baca Rodeo Company are taking extra pride in this year’s series and inviting past champions, competitors and those who have helped in any way shape or form to stop by, say hi to the old Baca Rodeo gang, bring along some old Baca Series memorabilia to share, and reflect on how the series has continued to keep the true, American Western rodeo spirit alive. With the help of Facebook, many have shared their old photos from the series and given their testaments on how the event has helped shape the world of rodeo in New Mexico and really the United States. As this year’s series continues to unfold, you can bet the competition will continue to get fierce and the broncs, bulls, calves, steers and even the sheep in the mutton busting will continue to prove that the Baca Rough Stock Series is one of the best rodeo events in the country. The Final weekend, March 10-11, 2012, of this year’s series will be included in the NMRA (New Mexico Rodeo Association) sanctioned list. As the series closes out this year, the NMRA is climbing on board and rolling out a new idea among the association. Not only are they going to have a few all rough stock events added to the season schedule, there will be a several all timed events to allow contestants more events to add to their seasons totals as well. The working relationship between Baca and the NMRA has always been good and it looks like it will continue as this year’s Baca Rough Stock Series comes to a close with the help of the NMRA. Congratulations to all of those who have claimed a round win at this year’s Baca Rough Stock Series and an early congrats to all of this year’s Season champions. In addition, hats are off to Casper Baca and the whole Baca Rodeo crew for another great series and a great kickoff to the 2012 rodeo season in New Mexico.

Dear Ropers, Do you feel like a million dollars? That is exactly what the USTRC is about to bestow on all of its competing members in 2012. Not to feel like a million dollars, but to present all of you collectively with an actual million dollars in cash! This is a game changer, as it far exceeds anything that has ever been done at the USTRC since the invention of the Shoot-Out. The consequences are going to be truly revolutionary. Why? Because instead of you, the roper, contributing added money to the National Finals Shoot-Out Fund, that money will now be provided solely by the USTRC, and it’s guaranteed to be a minimum of One Million Dollars! From here on out, not one dime of your entry fees will go toward added money at the National Finals of Team Roping (NFTR). For those of you who are unclear on how huge payouts at the NFTR have been previously generated, here is a quick reminder. A critical aspect of USTRC’s success was to create a National Finals event unsurpassed in the amount of money awarded to its National Champions. That goal has been accomplished, signified by the fact that for the last 11 years, over one million dollars of added money has magnified the incredible purses at the USTRC National Finals of Team Roping. Until now, a large portion of that money has come from the roper, in the form of a five percent contribution coming
out of your entry fees at every USTRC sanctioned roping. Your contributions helped to build the National Finals of Team Roping into the sport’s premier event – the largest and richest team roping in the world. In appreciation for all you’ve done, the USTRC is stepping up to contribute all of the added money, and we guarantee to add one million dollars to the NFTR purse. This commitment demonstrates how much faith the USTRC has in this sport and its members. But what exactly does this pledge mean to you? It means cash purses at every sanctioned event will dramatically increase. Based on roper contributions in 2011, over $750,000 more cash will be paid out at sanctioned events per season, without you having to lift a financial finger. That’s the new deal, the revolution USTRC is initiating right now. But the roper is not the only beneficiary. The business of producing team ropings is not an easy road to travel. USTRC producers have a substantial commitment in time, effort and money for every roping they put on, with no guarantee to earn a profit. And ropers, they do HAVE to earn a profit, or they will not be in this business very long. So the USTRC further pledges support of the unsung heroes of our business – the producers. You may not be aware that USTRC producers have also significantly contributed to the National Finals Shoot-Out Fund. In 2011, producers
added over a quarter of a million dollars out of their pocket to the Shoot-Out Fund. In the 2012 season, producers are no longer required to contribute to the Fund. This helps our producers stay in the game so they can continue providing ropers the best productions found anywhere in the sport of team roping. So, the revolution is upon us. The 2012 season marks a historic juncture in USTRC history as we continue our quest to provide greater value to our members. Now, ropers who cannot attend the Cinch NFTR won’t see their money siphoned off to an event he or she cannot attend. But the NFTR remains intact with the enormous cash purses and nominal entry fees that have made the NFTR the preeminent team roping year after year. Now cash purses at sanctioned events will grow by more than an estimated $750,000. You no longer need a math degree and a Cray computer to figure how much of your entry fees go into the roper’s pot. That number is two-thirds. Period. End of story! Sincerely,
Kirk Bray

In response to greater demand for a division at Sanctioned events in which Gold Plus members classified as #4’s and #5’s feel competitive, USTRC is excited to launch its 2012 Gold Plus Roping Pilot Program. At specified USTRC Sanctioned events, a specialty #10 Gold Plus roping with a #9 Incentive will be added to the schedule for Gold Plus members who are 25 years of age or older. WSTR – Heartland Changes Heartland Finale Shifts to Mega-Qualifier!
The Bonus Rotation is Back, And Improved
In 2010 when the we formulated the Heartland Finals, the original idea was to produce a second version of the World Series Finale, mid-year in the middle of the United States. It looked like we were on the right track when the first event paid $890,000 cash before prizes. Anticipating a major break out in 2011, EVH raised its nasty head resulting in lots of drawouts. Nevertheless, there were some good things that emerged from the 2011 event including the resolve of the ropers who remained and held the cash payout to $715,000. We added Bonus Rotations to take up a little slack from the drawouts, and the ropers loved it. Most came to Heartland for the money and to take advantage of the Mega-qualification to the Las Vegas Finales. This year we have doubled the number of teams qualifying (Top 20 it he average) and loosened the requirement for helper partners.
The Heartland format is $800/roper preenter, four steer average, three full rounds, three head consolation. The TOP TWENTY TEAMS placing in the average of each division QUALIFY for the Las Vegas Grand Finale, regardless of how many places are paid. In addition, the winners of the consolation in each division also qualify. Contestants entered in a Heartland division (1,600/team) may purchase a second entry with a second partner for $200 / roper. A Bonus Rotation will be offered in each Heartland Finals division. You may enter the bonus rotation on-site or pre-enter, but the trick here is that these Bonus teams will all run progressively in a rotation prior to the beginning of the $1,600 teams, These Bonus Rotation teams are progressive so they are not eligible for any Consolation money. The Bonus Team is a second entry and you may NOT enter a second time with the same partner (however, you may enter up
1. Mandy Sproul (Benson, AZ) / Katie Leibold (Phoenix, AZ), 6.47, $134 Century Bonus Total Payout: $2,100 Average 1. Buddy Rose (Yuma, AZ) / Joe B. Getzwiller (Gila Bend, AZ), 25.11 on 3, $1,260; 2. Bobby Felkins (Florence, AZ) / Mike Clancy (Queen Creek, AZ), 26.41 on 3, $840
and back). The questions we anticipate the most is, can I bring a second partner who is not part of a $1,600 team? The answer is— Yes. However, a helper partner ($200/roper) may only enter with a $800 roper, and is limited to two entries per division. Two helper partners cannot rope together for a second entry, they can only pair with a high dollar entrant. To simplify, your first entry in any division is $800, your second entry is $200. Helpers may only enter with a preentered ($800) roper. We believe this format option gives you more roping, reduces your per entry cost, retaining maximum leverage on the payout, and at the same time it allows us to estimate a controllable team count. The list for each division will be posted on-line one week prior to Heartland. There will be ample time to locate a second partner on site. Go to www.wstropoing.com to find the Heartland Entry form and the Bonus Rotation Entry form. You can send the Bonus form in, in advance or use it to enter on-site.
Entry Deadlines Heartland is pre-enter and entries must be received by May 18, 2012. No checks accepted after May 11, 2012. On-site Bonus Rotation entries are cash only. For more information, fell free to call 505-899-1755.

NE W C A L F TIE DOWN
Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

Story and Photos Compliments of Jim Olson
Team Roper’s Lament Well I know some like to golf, while others play pool And some play baseball – why they know every rule A good many watch sports, downtown at the bar Where they see a large oval, with fast racecars But me - I’m a cowboy and I like to rope It’s an addiction you see – it’s kinda like dope With a truck, a trailer and a brand new saddle A dog, a horse - and some Corriente cattle I’ve a mechanical steer – it goes round & round I rope ‘em all week, in preparation for town Where I’ll enter up, as much as they will allow Head or heel, no matter - just let me rope a cow So it’s enter three times and then ya draw nine more Twelve chances at glory - I believe now I’ll score But just in case it’s a no – I have all the tricks The excuses I spew and never miss a lick ‘Twas the header or heeler, my horse’s fault today Odds were against me, so I did not win the pay But every so often - the stars they will align And I win the big prize - and get to call it mine Will it happen today, the Good Lord only knows Better sooner than later, cause wife’s buyin’ clothes From the parking lot vendor, just right over there While I’m a-ropin’ she shops - says it’s only fair Now my pockets are empty and better win money Rope smart and rope fast then buy new shoes for Honey
Seems like today that I’ve been paired up quite well But I’ve seen that before and time will only tell First one ran, second ducked, third he was a breeze My fourth partner turned out – seems he’d lost his keys Next I ran number five – six - seven and then eight Things did not go as planned, it really wasn’t that great Missed loop here, barrier there and then a darn leg Last one now in the first round and Lord I hate to beg But another good one, would be a lot more fun To start the next round - with couple good runs So we draw a good steer and rope him real quick And the clock, she stops - on six and just a tick Well a go-round check puts me at even again Takes some pressure off so I can relax and win But it’s short round now and the pressure is here Need to focus on roping – not chokin’ nor fear Now in the box - horses and cattle stand ready Grip my rope real tight to get my hand steady The rest of the roping – it’s really just a blur Two more nice runs with our good ones, that much I’m sure They announce I won first place and second today The wife’s still a-shopping, while I unsaddle the bay I won a buckle for first - high point was a saddle The dream of every man, who ropes speckled cattle Speaking of dreams…the alarm is now a-singin’ Roll over in bed and realize, I was just dreamin’ The wife looks at me with a big smile on her face Says you must-a won – you’s jumpin’ all over the place Said honey let’s go cause there’s no time to waste Let’s load up the trailer for I must go make haste Got a good feeling today, it’s my turn to win If you go shoppin’ - well that wouldn’t be a sin But at the rodeo, things did not go as planned Roped so bad, seems good runs had just been banned So with my head hung low, I return to the truck Feeling real sad because I’m plumb run outta luck But Honey shows up - with a look of satisfaction ‘Stead of shoppin’ today she’d played the Calcutta action Explained it to me cause my face musta been blank Bet on another you see - now we’ve plenty of bank Now let me tell you what I’ve really learned ‘bout ropin’ Better a gamblin’ wife, than try to win the open! $70,000 in 7 Days!
Z
amora Roping Productions hit the ground running after arriving in Arizona January 3. After unloading horses and unpacking, we headed out to purchase a fresh set of Mexican Corrientes. On January 5 the fun began! That is if you call breaking steers in fun. Sometimes that can be a real chore. However, they broke in nicely and we have as nice a set of steers as anyone could ask for. Our events began January 13 and in one week we have awarded more than $70,000 in cash and prizes and we have only just begun! We would like to thank all the ropers that have come out to support us! We could not do this without you. Our season opener was held at the WW Arena east of Casa Grande, Arizona. This is an excellent facility owned by Alan and Robin Ward. It is managed by Stan Walter. These are excellent hosts and pride themselves in keeping the facility in top condition. We are proud to be associated with such VSA fine people. We had an excellent turnout with nearly 700 teams competing over two days. This by no means was the largest turnout ever at a roping but it was perfect for our first one. The big winners were John

McFarlane from Oregon and Canadian Dave Fraser. They each took home a nice Double S saddle. Our next roping was the Wrangler Wednesday opener. This event was good. We did not get the turnout we had anticipated, but had a great roping none the less. The #12 paid nearly $2,000 to win the average plus Wrangler Jean certificates courtesy of our headline sponsor. The winners of the #12 were the #9 team of Greg Miller and Rudy Riggs. They drew up together. Although this team had a three second handicap, it would not have mattered as they won the roping by six seconds. The only negative part of this was that Greg did not purchase the extra run and therefore, only won half the money. As advertised, the other half will be added to the March 21 Finale. The #10 paid over $1,300 to win plus some great Mortenson trophy buckles. Jim Bailey and Rick Hall Sr. were the champs. Then on to the Casa IN HOUSE PROOFGrande Rodeo CRX’D Grounds for the Reagan Days Roping. This was a new event for us as well as the Republican Committee of Pinal, Colorado. The turnout on Friday and Saturday was a bit light for the higher numbered ropings which is typical, but

we were roping for good money so the payoffs were respectable. Sunday was a completely different situation. We had 340 teams and awarded two Double S saddles and four Mortenson trophy buckles and a whole lot of cash. The big winners were Canadian Darwin Watson taking home the saddle in the #4 and under. The father son team of Dwaine and Dawson Graham were the average winners. The #10 saddle roping saw Glen Nordstrom win over $1,400 and a Double S Trophy saddle. He also won a Mortenson trophy buckle as he won the average with partner Ben South. As a result of winning first and second, Mr. Nordstrom was the winner of the High Money of the Weekend prize which was a beautiful framed Western print by artist Mike Capron. As we look ahead, we would like to invite all ropers to the WW Arena Season Finale Trailer Roping on March 17 and 18 and the Wrangler Wednesday finale World Series Qualifier on March 21 as we conclude the season in Arizona. We will be roping the first three Wednesdays in March. We will be donating part of the proceeds of the WW Arena season finale to the Pinal Co. Jr. Livestock sale and also to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Come out and help us support those two great causes. We would also like to welcome our newest sponsor rodeotickets.com If you are looking for tickets to the National Finals Rodeo, look no further. This is the place to go. They will provide a great service to all of you ropers going to the World Series of Team Roping Finale. Again, thank you to all the ropers who have supported our ropings the past week. We look forward to you all inviting your friends and returning for another event! Good Luck and go get the Money!

Beauty and Beast Collide for Success
F
rom the rough and tumble side of rodeo to the graceful, fast and furious side, the Beauty and Beast Rodeo event held in Apache Junction, Arizona opened the door for the two to collide. Bareback riders, bronc riders and bull riders competed along side barrel racers for cash and titles of Beauty and Beast champions. Contractor, Busteer Webb of the W/A Rodeo along with help from the GCPRA and locals hosted this event on February 4, 2012 and opened the door for these competitors to get a jump on the early Spring rodeo season. Kicking the mud off their boots and cleaning the dust off their saddles, the event gave them a chance to fill their pockets and have a good time doing it. The bareback riding event witnessed a great ride by Tyler Staker who took home the championship. Staker scored 79 points and won close to $300 for his efforts. A 78 point ride in the saddle bronc riding gave Thor Dusenberry the championship. He won just over $200. Things got tough in the bull riding where several top rides were posted. In the end, Kyle Coppenger rode his bull to the tune of 75 points and the championship. He took home almost $500. Moving to the beauty side of the event, Anyie Bailey drove her horse around the clover-leaf pattern the fastest in the Open barrel race. She finished with a time of 18.52 seconds taking the championship and a little over $400 in
cash. The race was exciting with the top three competitors all posting runs under 19 seconds. The incentive barrel race was just as exciting. Kerry Luffy finished at the top of the heap after running her pattern in 19.26 seconds. Her win earned her just over $250 in cash. The Beauty and the Beast event was no doubt a success and one that you can bet will be back again for years to come. Complete with a rodeo dance, competitors will no doubt make this a not-to-miss event in the future and you can bet it will continue to grow as each year passes.

World’s Oldest – Still One of the Best!
B
oasted as the “World’s Oldest Bull Riding,” the Mid-Winter Championship Bull Riding has no doubt been one of the pristine events in West Texas for many years. This year’s, 39th annual event was once again one of the biggest and best events for bull riders to showcase their talents and fill their pockets with cash. Charlie Thompson has been the man behind this event since its inception and not only hosts this annual event, but promotes the sport of rodeo throughout the year in his home town of Lubbock, Texas, home of the Mid-Winter Championship Bull Riding. The event kicked into gear on January 26-28 where lots of tough cowboys competed for $12,000 in cash, a one-ofa-kind trophy buckle to the winner and to add their name alongside a list of many past champions, including some of the most well known bull riders in history. With a lot at stake, the bull riding was filled to the brim with competitors and big rides and action-packed feats were on call throughout the weekend. Top riders poured out their talents and plenty of them made it to the pay
Hooey Caching on in the Industry No doubt, little things catch on inside circles of things. Sports, recreation, markets, they all seem to find something that gives them an identity. Football jerseys worn by fans, t-shirts with favorite logos, and a lot of other things seem to group people. Just by looking at someone and what they are wearing, you can sense their likes. Some goes for many n the rodeo community. Of course the cowboy hat, boots and buckles give them an identity of their own, but recently, there ahs been a new look that has given many a new look so to speak. Hooey has been around for a few year and more and more cowboys and cowgirls are digging the cool designs of their caps and clothing. With a wild-side attached to great design, the Hooey image has become somewhat of a standard for many who rope and rodeo.
window. Taking home the top honors with this year’s championship was Chow Miranda out of the Thursday night performance. Miranda posted an 88 point ride on top of bull #636 from the TNT rodeo string. The high marked ride earned him $5,000 in cash, championship buckle and this year’s title. The event was tough clear to the end with nine other riders making rides all in the 80 point range to win money. Although the bottom five riders all tied, the money was well spread around the excitement was awesome. 39th Annual Mid-Winter Championship Rodeo January 26-28, 2012 Lubbock, Texas 1. O
nce again I sit here hammering out another edition of this monthly installment. A few things have been on my mind over the past month, but one thing kind of stands out. It came to me after a general discussion with a friend of mine. We were talking about how things have changed in the sport of rodeo over the past decade or so. We all have to agree that there is both good and bad in this area. Smaller rodeos seem to be struggling while the ‘giants’ of the sport and the associations that have spawned off of the traditional rodeo scene seem to be going gangbusters. The USTRC, PBR, CBR, World Series of Team Roping are no doubt the biggest and best, and it would not be the same without them. However, in their rise to become what they are today, I believe they have impaired the local rodeo scene. A guy can go and have a shot at big money in these specialized associations, while the hometown rodeos struggle getting anyone to attend because they do not have the same grand payouts. Now, I am not against these ‘giants’ so to speak. I know they have done more for the markets surrounding rodeo and Western heritage than rodeo in general could ever have done, but I sympathize with the local rodeo producers, small town rodeo committees and rodeo contestants who no longer shine in the same spotlights they once did. Is there hope for small rodeos to
continue to succeed? I am not sure. I think they will always be around, but they will have a hard time making up the ground they have lost. It will take something pretty substantial to give them the opportunity to gain back contestants. I also believe that the larger associations will continue to grow and that if the smaller rodeos have a shot at regaining the former luster of the cowboys and cowgirls that attended them, they may have to adapt some new things to keep them in the game. It will take a lot of work from committees and producers to do something to regain the contestants’ interest. In addition, I believe it will take a new attraction to keep people attending these events. All of this takes money, which seems to be a scarce asset today. The revolving wheel of tapped-out sponsors, lack of spectator attendance and the slow move of contestants away from these events to larger association events is a trend that will need to be broken. One thing that will help regain the strength for small rodeos is a overall union of them. This could be regional or national, but a coming together of sorts of all amateur and smaller rodeos could be a huge step to keep these rodeos thriving and moving forward. Of course this is a huge undertaking but something that I believe could be a good answer. Until Next month – “Dirt” – Keep it under your feet. Ryan Davis

PBR Chad Ochocinco Embarks On Another Bucking Bull Adventure With PBR And ABBI Chad Ochocinco is no stranger to the PBR or bucking bulls. Ochocinco rode PBR superstar bull Deja Blue last year on live television after a short, intensive training session with “King of the Cowboys” Ty Murray. Ochocincodidn’t make it to the whistle, but the experience left him with a newfound appreciation for the sport of bull riding and its brave athletes. Now the New England Patriots wide receiver is embarking on another adventure - owning a bucking bull though the PBR and ABBI’s Back Seat Buckers program. Unlike his previous bucking bull experience, this time around Ochocinco will not be risking life or limb. This year at PBR events, Ochocinco will be able to enjoy the action from behind the chutes as he roots on his bull and competes for a share of half a million dollars in prize money. ABBI will feed, house, haul and train Ochocinco’s bull, along with the other
99 in the program. “Ochocinco is such a gifted athlete and he really understands our sport,” stated ABBI Executive Director Kaycee Simpson. “We’re excited to see him play on Sunday and then we’ll be looking forward to seeing if he uses his firsthand understanding of bucking bulls when selecting his Back Seat Bucker on March 3 at Cowboys Stadium.” Celebrity owners already involved in the inaugural season of Back Seat Buckers include John Elway, Wayne Gretzky and Bear Pascoe. Back Seat Buckers is a program of 100 elite Futurity bulls that will compete against each other this season for a total of half a million dollars in prize money. The Finals event winner will earn his owner $250,000. There are still some spots available to purchase a bull. For more information visit americanbuckingbull.com or backseatbuckers.com.

A sold-out crowd was witness to a thrilling evening of bull riding and a Houston cowboy claiming his second El Paso Champion title in a row! Craig Jackson is experiencing an outstanding week. He just released his new rap album BTB Vol I and tonight he gets two exceptional bull rides and a high dollar check. Jackson was first up on the Loutelle bull team bull, Chief, for an 86.5 ride, which landed him fourth going into the short go. Next up he drew JC Knapp’s bull, Corpus Red and finished off the night with a 91.5 ride. “This is just what I came in here wanting to do,” said Jackson after the show. “What a great place to ride. The El Paso fans were really behind me and it was such a great feeling.” The JC Knapp bull, Corpus Red, Jackson’s short round bull, was awarded Bull of Event and also shared high marked ride honors with Buckle Man, a bull owned by Owen Washburn. Fittingly, JC Knapp also takes home the Palace Station Million Dollar Bull Team event win for El Paso.

Arizona Farm Bureau Celebrates Arizona’s Centennial By Celebrating Our Youth More than 40,000 student magazines already distributed to schools. Arizona Farm Bureau’s statewide Agriculture in the Classroom Program is celebrating the state’s Centennial with the new Arizona Five Cs “Ag Mag” (Agricultural Magazine for students). This 4-page, full-color newspaper provides students with information on the importance of the Arizona Five Cs at statehood and the role they continue to play today. The Arizona “Ag Mag” is aligned to the State Learning Standards for 4th through 6th grade students. “The Ag Mag is such an interesting read and such a celebration of our state’s agriculture history that adults will enjoy the magazine too,” says Arizona Farm Bureau President Kevin Rogers. “So much of why this state exists is because of our farming and ranching history.” Said teacher Shannon Fontes from Cholla
Elementary in Casa Grande, “Wow! What a wonderful resource to learn and celebrate Arizona.” 41,330 copies of the magazine have already been delivered to teachers in many of the Maricopa, Pinal, Pima, Cochise, Graham, Navajo, Mohave, Yuma and La Paz County school districts as a result of teacher and principal requests for this wonderful resource. Schools can still request the student “Ag Mag” by contacting Katie Aikins at 480.635.3608 or katieaikins@azfb.org. This educational publication can be seen in pdf format on Arizona farm Bureau’s website: http://azfb.org/upload/ file/AG%20MAG%205%20Cs.pdf Special note: If you’d like to interview a teacher in your area, let us know and we’ll contact teachers using the Ag Mag in their classrooms.
About Arizona Farm Bureau The Arizona Farm Bureau is a grassroots organization dedicated to preserving and improving the Arizona agriculture industry through member involvement in education, political activities, programs and services. We also provide free curriculum material free to teachers throughout Arizona that is aligned with state teaching standards.

Dear NMRA members, Welcome to the 2012 Rodeo Season. We officially kicked off our season February 11, 2012 in Socorro, NM with our annual winter convention. The convention was a great success with many of our rodeo committees and stock contractors in attendance. I cannot express enough how encouraged I am about the positive wind blowing across the NMRA. Our board of directors worked hard for many long hours over the two days to continue to make improvements to our association and to come up with some truly great ideas. As you know the NMRA raffled off a trailer last year as a fund raiser for our association. What you may not know is that this idea was very successful, especially considering the fact that we put that program together literally 30 days before the finals. As a result of the success of the trailer raffle we have decided to do that again this year…with a few twists. Thanks to Brian Sullivan and Christian Sanchez (who came up with this great idea) we are going to now make the trailer raffle program available to our rodeo committees so that they too can benefit financially from this great program. We will get back to you with all the details, but just know that as a rodeo committee you will be able to sell raffle

Finals-you do not have to qualify. There must be at least three contestants in an event for that event to take place. If there are not three entries then contestants will have the option to change events at the rodeo. Rough stock riders – our new director, Travis Sullivan has made it possible to give weekend buckles in each age group. Calf riders, mini bulls and Jr. and Sr. bulls will have separate buckles to run at. Buckles will be awarded to the Average winners each weekend. Please note that the 10-12 rough stock will be riding mini bulls instead of steers. 10-12 Breakaway 16-19 Calf Touch 7-9 Breakaway 16-19 Team Roping 13-15 Team Roping 12 & Under Parent/Child Team Roping 16-19 Steer Stopping 13-15 Steer Stopping 10-12 Steer Stopping 7-9 Steer Breakaway 13-15 Chute Dogging 6 & Under Dummy Roping 16-19 Girls Goat Tying 13-15 Girls Goat Tying 13-15 Boys Goat Tying 10-12 Girls Goat Tying 10-12 Boys Goat Tying 7-9 Girls Goat Tying 7-9 Boys Goat Tying 6 & Under Goat Tying 7-9 Flag Race 6 & Under Flag Race 16-19 Barrel Racing 13-15 Barrel Racing 10-12 Barrel Racing 7-9 Barrel Racing 6 & Under Barrels 16-19 Pole Bending 13-15 Pole Bending 10-12 Pole Bending 7-9 Pole Bending 6 & Under Pole Bending

Bustin’ Out New Years Race – South Buckeye Equestrian and Event Center The theme for the New Year’s weekend held in Buckeye, Arizona, on December 30-31, 2011 and January 1, 2012 should have been a beach party. The weather was great! “Typical” Arizona weather as we never know what we’ll have to pull out of the closet . . . t-shirts, down coats or rain coast. There was a total of 1,141 runs and 352 riders in attendance, as well as a total payout $61,970 in cash and $15,000 in saddles and awards. The Unknown Politician
T
his time next year we’ll know if Fred Triplebottom was none of the we’ll suffer through four more years above. He skipped classes, got caught of the current resident of the White carrying a knife, never had the proper House or suffer four more years under stationery, like pen and paper, and worst his Republican challenger. Whoever of all... he was a known smoker! Fred wins, we’ll find a way to suffer and was slow as an ox, but not as smart, and survive. We always have. today he’d be put in special classes and I developed my lack of interest in all labeled learning disabled, mentally things political at a young age when Fred challenged or intellectually unremarkable. Triplebottom wasVSA elected PresidentINofHOUSE PROOF His parents neverCRX’D put a bumper sticker on our Junior High School. Through all of their car bragging about their honor recorded history the school president had student and it wasn’t just because his pop gotten good grades, participated in sports was in prison or his mom’s car had no and student council, and was quite often bumpers. He’d been flunked several times the teacher’s pet. and was much older than all of us and yet he still got D’s in school. D as in DUMB! I think his teachers just passed him along because they got tired of looking at him. It was considered a possibility by all of us that at his present rate of progress he’d have kids in the same grade as he was. Fred had never shown the slightest interest in anything to do with school. He didn’t play in the band, or on any sports teams, and he hung around with the town’s riff raff, not the sons and daughters of the town’s aristocracy. That’s why it was so puzzling when he announced he was running for school president. Why he wanted the position I have no idea. I don’t think it was wealth and power, nor that it would look good on his resume. Fred didn’t really need a P.O. Box 1255 resume where he was headed. A rap sheet Pampa, Texas 79065 yes, but a resume no. Maybe he thought it would look good when he applied for early parole? Lacking a political machine and any record in politics, Fred relied on crudely email: made posters that said “Vote for Me.” khart41@yahoo.com (How were we supposed to know who “Me” was?) Fred ran as a centrist www.faithfoto.com candidate and a man of the people. You could say he was the “food candidate” as brownies and burgers were his platform.
KEITH HART Photographer

You see, we all had to eat in the school cafeteria, either that or starve. (Which was a viable alternative.) Fred promised brownies and burgers would be served three times a week. It was a brilliant strategy. The brownies we got occasionally were delicious, with a dusting of powdered sugar on top and the burgers were always great. Usually all we got was mystery meat spaghetti, fish with the consistency of Jell-O and beans. Lots and lots of beans, which despoiled the classroom environment in classes held after the lunch hour. The reason we all believed that Fred could influence the menu in the school cafeteria was because his mom worked there. Mind you, she wasn’t the nutritionist who decided what cheap slop to feed us every week, she was just one of the lady’s in hairnets who slung the hash. But at that tender age we didn’t know how the system worked. For all we knew, it was within her power to give us burgers and brownies every day of the week. Fred’s campaign fed off this ignorance. The elections were held at the end of seventh grade but his term didn’t start until eighth grade, so this left the entire summer for school officials to stew over the apocalypse with Fred as president. Never before had someone from this low in the social pecking order been elected to any office. He was the Unknown Politician! As it turned out Fred didn’t do anything and brownies and burgers showed up on the menu at the same rate as they did before. But every time they did Fred would point out, “See there, look what I did for you.” The school survived Fred’s reign as president and I suspect that whoever is elected this November, we will too. wwwLeePittsbooks.com
