MARCH 2013

THE

Competitorial O

kay… here’s a scenario… Let’s say you’re standing outside your barn roping your practice dummy or your roping machine or whatever… nobody is around… you’re playing that game in your head that everyone who has ever practiced like this has played… You’re in the short round of some big roping or rodeo and it all comes down to this one final throw… you feel the sweat on the back of your neck, the smell of a pen of steers loaded and ready to go, your reins and rope positioned perfectly in your hand, your horse steady and ready underneath you. The steer bolts from the chute, your rope swinging over your head in perfect time… you take your shot… and… you MISS! What do you do… right then… at that moment? We’ll get back to this. Continuing the theme for the past couple months, I want to address an issue that is vitally important to us all and possibly to the existence of our sport itself, whether it be rodeo or team roping or barrel racing or whatever. That, of course, is support by means of sponsorships. The truth is, overall we have done a terrible job of taking care of our sponsors. The net effect of this is that over time they have become more and more scarce. No question, our track record of keeping many of those we managed to scare up in the first place, is a dismal one. Keep in mind, I am talking about real sponsors… not those individuals or small businesses that are chummed out of

money in the name of sponsorship and are really only donations. Truth is, I think a great deal of sponsorship loss is directly attributable to treating “sponsors” like “donators”… but that’s a whole different topic. Finding and keeping sponsors should be much easier than it is. Our sport is a perfect fit for what a lot of companies/businesses want to be identified with. Unfortunately, however, I’ve seen a change slowly taking place over the past decade or so that has to be tarnishing the attractiveness of our sport in the eyes of sponsors. A few evenings ago, I was flipping through the channels and stumbled on a broadcast of a junior rodeo finals. It was actually pretty good watching. However, the one thing that stuck with me was how some of those kids acted when the outcome wasn’t what they wanted. I was actually embarrassed for them. Now I’m not singling out anyone in particular, but in the team roping specifically, there was a whole lot of slinging ropes and falling backwards on their horses when they missed. It was a pitiful display and certainly not one I imagine pleased a sponsor of the event. Now I understand that the rebuke of kids in any shape or form is extremely unfashionable and unpopular these days (see, How to Raise a Spoiled Brat, for more on this.) But, it needs to be pointed out because, in my view, it’s an example of taking the very best of what our sports continued on page 65

MARCH 2013

THE

Baca Series – It’s Underway! he Largest Rough Stock Event in the United States kicked off February 910 in Belen, New Mexico. The Baca Rough Stock Rodeo filled the Valencia Sheriff’s Posse Arena with broncs and bulls, as well as some of the most talented cowboys in the sport today. In addition, some of the best fans in rodeo came out and braved the early February weather for a chance to catch the action and witness the thrills and spills that only the “Baca Series” can offer! The broncs and bulls, and those tough competitors who strapped it on and nodded their head for their shot at the money were on high alert and packed full of adrenaline. In addition to the hot-handed brand and bull riders featured throughout the weekend, the event also ushered in a spectacle of young guns whose talents shined. These future stars of the rodeo

arena filled the arena floor in the sheep riding, calf riding and steer riding events throughout the weekend as well. The first weekend of the series consisted of two separate rodeos each day allowing competitors to fill up on the payouts and begin their quest to become a “Baca Series” champions. Five weekends, ten rounds, thousands of dollars and the chance to earn one of the most coveted titles in the sport, the competitors came prepared to give it their all and will be back throughout the next few weeks to continue their mission. From the youngsters to those seasoned veterans of the rough stock world, the Baca Series is one of the hottest contested events in the country. Be sure to head to Belen, New Mexico and fill up on some of the best rough sock action around. It only happens once a year! PHOTOS COURTESY OF POUNDING HOOVES PHOTOGRAPHY

New Mexico Adds a Few Events

C

entral New Mexico has always been a hotbed for events. From team ropings to rodeos, and everything in between, the area in and around Albuquerque is filled with recreational horse owners who compete at events as often as they can. As the weather warms up over the next few months, more and more events opening up the door for these competitors to do what they enjoy. The New Mexico State Fairgrounds has always been a landing spot for events. From Tingley Coliseum to Horseman’s arena millions of competitors have filled these arena floors over the years. The facility has already opened up their doors for barrel racers to get things rolling for 2013. They hosted a barrel race in January and will continue to host monthly competitions throughout the summer months and beyond.

Utilizing the Dairy Barn on the Fairgrounds, racers now have a great place to compete at. Additionally, Wayne Epsteen who has been instrumental in bringing in the barrel race is also working on a monthly team roping event at the fairgrounds. Although all of the details are not set in stone, the groundwork has been laid out and ropers can be sure, like the barrel races, there will be future events they can compete at within the next few months. Along the Rio Grande River, there will be many other great events within the next few months. Many of these events will be ones that have been hosted in years past, but you can bet there will be a handful of new ones. Benefit events are always springing up. These are always great ways for organizations, schools, or clubs to raise

One such event will kick off the end of this month. The Horsin’ Around Therapeutic Riding Center is hosting a team roping in Belen New Mexico. They are inviting ropers to come out and “Rope so others may ride!” Hosted at the Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Belen New Mexico on March 30, 2013, the day will include two ropings. They will host a #9 capped at a 5 (No Elites) and a #12 Slide. Both ropings will be pick one draw two or draw all three for $150 per roper. Ropers can begin entering at 8 a.m. and the ropings will begin at 9. There will be Saddles awarded to High Money Winners and Buckle given to Average champions. This is sure to be a great event and just in time for ropers to gear up for the summer events all across the Southwest.

MARCH 2013

Story and Photos Compliments of Jim Olson

Pablo “El Prieto” Osuna Vaquero

C

owboy and Indian Days 2013 (Casa Grande, AZ) recently honored one of Arizona’s great working ranch cowboys, Pablo Osuna. He is legendary among old-timers. Known as one of the best ropers, cowboys, and horsemen in the last half of the twentieth century, you’d be hard-pressed to find a movie that would do a better job recounting the life of a “true cowboy” than if one could be done on Pablo Osuna. Pablo was born on September 16, 1917, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora in an area known as La Temporal or “The Temporary.” Basically, when it rained a lot, crops were planted, livestock grazed, and things were good. When it didn’t rain however, folks barely got by - a tough life. Pablo’s parents knew early on he was destined to be a cowboy. For example, after being shown the basics of braiding, his mother thereafter had to hide towels, linens, and such from young Pablo. Whenever he got a hold of these things, he would take them apart and then braid tack out of them!

THE

His first cowboy experience came when he went to work with his father at Rancho El Alamo (Cottonwood Ranch) near Magdalena, Mexico, as a mere boy. In addition to his cowboy chores the youngster attended school there. A Harvard man - turned cowboy - had built Rancho El Alamo many years prior. Its headquarters resembled an ancient English castle. A photograph of the ranch, taken when Pablo was about fourteen years old later appeared in National Geographic Magazine, February, 1955. In the photo, Pablo and other cowboys pose with the famous “Alamo castle” in the background. Pablo struck out on his own when he was about fifteen. Within a year, he went to work at the well-known Rancho La Cananea, outside of Cananea, Mexico. Rancho La Cananea had mining operations in northern Mexico and ranching operations in southern Arizona and Mexico. It was reported the ranch in Mexico covered 667,000 acres and ran as many as 24,000 head of Hereford cattle. In 1934, an event happened that changed Pablo’s life. At the urging of friends, he went to talk to an American rancher named Bud Parker about a job. Bud had just leased Rancho Pozo Nuevo (New Well Ranch) near Magdalena, Mexico. After going to work there, Parker became a mentor to young Pablo. He eventually considered him sort of like a second father. Soon after, Parker brought Osuna over to Arizona to work on a ranch north of Benson. Bud had come to appreciate the roping skills of his hired man so much that he also entered Pablo in his first rodeo. He won the event! Bud wound up entering Pablo in numerous rodeos around the state after that and both men supplemented their incomes from it. A couple of notable professional cowboys from the era once commented to

ALL-AROUND

the author, “We’re sure glad Pablo never ventured out of Arizona much, because if he had, winning would have been a whole lot harder on the rodeo trail.” Another thing Bud did for Pablo was to help him get his “papers” straight, so he could become a citizen of the United States. Pablo worked for Bud until Bud’s death—a total of about sixteen years. Bud Parker gained the respect and admiration of the teenager that still lives on today in the heart of a man approaching ninety-six. After Bud’s death, Pablo worked on many well-known Arizona ranches. During those years, he continued supplementing his income through roping. He competed at many major jackpots and rodeos in Arizona, such as the Fiesta De Los Vaqueros in Tucson and the Jaycees Rodeo in Phoenix. At this time he gained a reputation as one of Arizona’s best ropers. Luckily for Pablo, he could make extra money with his rope because he had a growing family as well. He married the love of his life, Maria Valenzuela, in 1946. The happy couple then had ten kids over the next couple decades. In 1960, Pablo tried a new venture in hopes of bettering his life and that of his family. Back then, it was not legal for Americans to own property in Mexico. However, there was an American in Tucson who wanted a ranch in Mexico as an investment. The man spoke to Pablo about it, and the two formed a partnership. The ranch would be in Pablo’s name, and Pablo would run it. This fellow put up the money and they were full partners. Pablo and family ranched in Mexico for about six years. They loved it there, but things did not work out financially as expected. A friend of Pablo’s from Casa Grande, Arizona urged him to come help on his ranch. Pablo came for the roundup - then wound up staying. He sent the family a

ALL-AROUND

letter telling them he wasn’t going to go back to Mexico. As soon as things were “tended to” down there the family would return to Arizona. They were enjoying Mexico, but finances were better on the U.S. side of the line. Shortly after returning to the United States, Pablo began working for a local feedlot. Then another feedlot in California offered him more money. The Osuna’s moved there, but were soon homesick for Arizona. On a day off, while visiting a friend at a feed yard near Maricopa, Arizona, the cowboy boss drove by and saw Pablo. Once spotted, he was offered a job immediately. It didn’t take much urging for Pablo to accept, and soon the family relocated to Maricopa—much to their delight. He spent the next twenty years working for Producers and Pinal feed yards of Maricopa - until his retirement at age seventy in 1987. After retirement, he couldn’t stay put. He then “day worked” for ranches and did odd jobs related to horses for the next several years. It was only as he approached ninety that he finally quit working so hard.

Local cowboys often comment, “Pablo is a great horseman.” He has trained countless horses while going about his cowboy duties. It has been said he has a special connection with them. Many an Arizona cowboy has owned a Pablo Osuna trained horse. Whether they used them in the arena or in the open country, they could always count on the horse having a good foundation from its trainer. A local veterinarian even calls him “El Brujo” (loosely translated “The Wizard” or the “The Witch Doctor”). This is done good-naturedly and refers to the fact Pablo is well versed in the making of liniments, salves, and such which people have used for centuries to cure what ails livestock. Life has slowed down a bit for Pablo now that he is over ninety-five. With a faraway gleam in his eyes, he tells stories of chasing wild cows on half-broke horses in even wilder country. As he describes the men with whom he worked, the horse he was riding, the country, the situation, it’s almost as if you were there, dodging mesquite, jumping boulders, crashing brush - until you line out on a

27

wild maverick. He has lived a way of life that many only read about. Over the years, he became known as a “Top Hand.” However, he lives today just as he has lived his entire life; humble and down-to-earth. “Do the very best that you can.” “Work honorably.” “You are no better than anyone else, and no one else is any better than you.” Advice Pablo believes in and lives by. It is a fitting tribute to a great Vaquero that Pablo Osuna be honored by the 2013 Cowboy and Indian days celebration. www.JimOlsonAuthor.com

Timed Event Championship Hosts Top Stars The Biggest Names in Professional Rodeo Ready for This Year’s ‘Ironman’ Competition The Lazy E Arena has been a showcase of rodeo’s greatest stars for nearly three decades. The arena – which the late Clem McSpadden dubbed the Taj Mahal of the rodeo business – just gets better with age, and the 2013 Timed Event Championship is proof. This year’s field includes some of the greatest cowboys to have ever competed in ProRodeo, including 10 men who own a combined 47 gold buckles. From first-timers like 2012 heeling world champ Jade Corkill to veterans like 1980 all-around champ Paul Tierney, who owns four Timed Event titles, this year’s championship is full of overwhelming rodeo talent. It’s a who’s who of the sport’s greatest stars, including 17-time world champion Trevor Brazile, who owns a record 10 all-around titles. What makes the Timed Event Championship so special? It features today’s brightest stars, most of whom focus on one rodeo discipline; inside the Lazy E, though, they must tackle all five timed events: team roping-heading, team roping-heeling, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and steer roping. None of the entrants competes in all five disciplines regularly throughout the season, which makes the three-day affair such talkedabout competition. The Timed Event Championship is a testament of a true cowboy. It takes a true hand to rope this well, this fast. It takes a true hand to grapple steers, much less the ones that will be featured inside the Lazy E. It takes a true hand to combine all the skills necessary to compete at the elite level. “Everybody that is entered knows it’s the ‘Ironman’,” said K.C. Jones, the reigning and five-time champion from Burlington, Wyo. This is where two-time world champion steer wrestler Dean Gorsuch will rope steers alongside two-time world champion header Chad Masters, who also will bulldog steers. This is more than

stepping outside one’s comfort zone; the Timed Event Championship is about crushing that perspective in the most cowboy of ways. If that weren’t enough, the men in the field will tackle all five disciplines five times in three days. It’s a rugged test for Pro Rodeo’s greatest players, who pay the $3,000 entry fee to compete in this invitation-only challenge. From top timed-event cowboys like Josh Peek and Russell Cardoza to a World’s Greatest Roper like Daniel Green to multitaskers like Mike Outhier and Trell Etbauer – both of whom have won awards for excelling in timed events and riding bucking horses – the 2013 Timed Event Championship promises to be one of the best ever. Families will enjoy all of the activities planned for the performances. Ticket prices are $37 for VIP, box seats $30, reserved bleachers $25 and general admission $20. Children 12 and under are free in general admission and VIP area. Group and multiple performance discounts are also available - service charges may apply. Call (800) 595-RIDE for complete details. A portion of the proceeds from the 2013 Timed Event Championship will be donated to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. In addition, Priefert Ranch & Rodeo Equipment, The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and the Lazy E will be auctioning off the Customized Priefert Roping Chute used in this year’s competition to the highest bidder of the weekend - all proceeds will donated to the Rodeo Historical Society. The Lazy E is proud to support this institution for western preservation! Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster outlets, www.lazye.com, calling Ticketmaster (800) 745-3000 or by calling the Lazy E Arena directly at (800) 595-RIDE. The 2013 Timed Event Championship is sponsored by Priefert Ranch & Rodeo Equipment, Pendleton Whisky, Wrangler, American Farmers and Ranchers Insurance, Cross Bar Gallery, Ram

Black Inc., Gist Silversmiths, Spin to Win Magazine, National Saddlery, Hot Heels, Shorty’s Caboy Hattery, CSI Saddlepads, the Best Western Edmond, and the Fairfield Inn & Suites – Edmond. e-runs have really become a biggie in the world of recreational team roping recently. While everyone is in agreement that they are necessary, the interpretation of the PRCA term “ability to compete” has been debatable and fairly subjective. The entire issue is causing a perpetual headache for contractors and flaggers as they try to establish balance in handling them and at the same time try to figure out what to do with the chronic customers requesting reruns at every turn. These chronics seem to fall into two groups, the people who reason they have nothing to lose by asking for reruns at every roping, and the people who believe that anytime they miss it is the fault of the steer. The rerun issue has reached a point where finding and keeping good flaggers is getting harder, particularly at large ropings. The flaggers argue that they are in a no-win situation as not granting and sometime granting, seems to create a conflict, and their explanation rarely ends the conversation. As a result, flaggers seem to avoid those conflicts by two different methods; those who rarely give anyone a rerun, and those who seem to give everyone a rerun. Obviously, that statement might be a little simplistic and

extreme, but if they plan on flagging for an extended amount of time, they generally develop a personal policy for conflict management that doesn’t involve the philosophy of the contractor or association. With millions at stake we went way overboard at this last Finale addressing fairness with the cattle. If you were there, then you couldn’t help but notice how much extra attention we gave to be certain the bulk of the rotations were clean. We had a rerun judge sitting at the back of the arena to pick up anything a flagger might have missed, had the break-out barrier to settle the speed arguments, had a support official in the arena to intercept ropers before they reached the flagger and act as liaison between the roper, flagger and me to make sure every contested run was reviewed. And finally, we had the instant replay video. Let me share a little of our experience from the 2012 Finale replay desk. About half of the ropers who requested reruns refused to agree when instant replay did not go their way, even after two or three replays. It is pretty clear why the NFL has the replay guy in a booth by himself. The NFL makes the decision upstairs, followed by the head official making the announcement on the field, which is followed by the television cameras quickly scanning over to the coach on the sideline so you can read his lips as he mouths “that’s bullshit.” The difference at the Finale is that we voluntarily put ourselves in the position of standing next to the roper, their partners and sometimes their spouse at the exact “that’s bullshit” moment. We know there is a lot of money at play, but in most instances the roper, with his/her gang of support, wants to argue regardless of the evidence. Our experience this year has caused us to rework our thinking in reviewing re-runs at the next Finale. In the history of team roping we know of no one that has dedicated the amount of resources that we did to make sure contestants at the Finales had more

ALL-AROUND CALENDAR on pages 36 & 37 than adequate oversight. But evidently that was not enough……………. if the team did not get the decision they wanted the debate seemed to continue. Our NEW PLAN for the 2013 FinaleAt this year’s Finale a replay official will be monitoring from an isolated location. The replay official will have the absolute final decision, and the debate WILL end at that point. The answer from the replay judge will be a simple yes or no, with a one-sentence explanation. I expect a few attempts to appeal to me directly, but I have confidence in this review process and therefore should have plenty of time to perfect my “ridicule and scolding” speech should someone reject the process. It will be short. But even with these efforts it doesn’t answer the overall issue of how our qualification contractors deal with this growing problem with their flaggers. As noted in the rule book I have asked all the contractors to step up and handle the situation. After the flagger makes his call, step in and take any conflict away from the flagger and away from the middle of the arena. Obviously we have some of them that aren’t crazy about that idea, and they are generally instructing the flaggers to be super conservative. But that doesn’t go over real well and creates more conflict for the flagger. If we aren’t careful the idea that you should get a fair shake can backfire and the flagging actually start being worse instead of better. We have noticed that about half of these rerun requests are being generated by the same individuals. We are doing our best to make sure that the flaggers at the qualification ropings know who the chronics are, and make sure they these folks don’t get the benefit of the doubt. That addresses half the problem, but to be honest we don’t have a clue how to do anything different or better than what we are already doing.

CBR Invades New Mexico

Former CBR World Champion Bonner Bolton Wins In Hobbs A familiar name to Championship Bull Riding, 2007 World Champ Bonner Bolton, made his first appearance on the “2013 Road to Cheyenne Tour” for the season and rode every bull he drew, taking home with him a hefty check and shiny Hy O Silver buckle. Bonner was first out on the Cooper/Scruggs/Lane bull Bring da Wood for an 87.5. He followed it up on another Cooper/Scruggs/Lane bull, Cash Daddy for a whopping 90 point ride in the semi-final round. Bolton lead the four man field in the championship round and was last out on the 2012 CBR Bull of The Year, Bugle, owned by Greg Talbert, and scored 91 points clenching the win! Bolton was very emotional after his win, “Professionally this is a great day

for me, personally it was very tough. I lost two close friends this week and I dedicate this win to Shae and Cade and hope that God received them this week with open arms.” When asked if we will see more of his this season, his answer, “I hope so,” with a grin. Lyndal Hurst was the other big name of the night. His pen of bulls stole the show. Hurst walks away with a Palace Station Million Dollar Bull Team win and high marked bull honors for his bull Palace Station John Doe. More CBR tour action continues. Catch the action, find results at more at CBRBull.com and CBR Facebook. RESULTS 1. Ardie Maier, Timber Lake, SD, 603; 2. Cody Teel, Kountze, TX, 531.5; 3. Tanner Learmont, Fort Worth, TX, 424.5; 4. NMRA Welcome 2013! he New Mexico Rodeo Association (NMRA) is ushering in the 2013 season with a great event. Always a kick off to the new season, the NMRA has hosted their annual membership drive rodeo for many, many years. This year’s event however has some unique twists and turns to make it one rodeo cowboys and cowgirls need not to miss. To start things off, there will be $1,000 in cash and trophy buckles added to each event. The hard work from the NMRA throughout the winter months has proven positive results and the added money to this year’s first official rodeo is proof. In addition to the big money awaiting those who top their events, the rodeo will be split into two separate rodeos, giving contestants more bang for their buck over the weekend. The event will be held in Bosque Farms at the Bosque Farms Rodeo Arena on March 30 and 31, 2013. Several of the NMRA’s stock contractors

T

will be on hand to make this event one to remember. Nunn’s Frontier Rodeo Co., W/A Rodeo Co. and C5/Rdoeo Company will bring along their best bucking horses and bulls to kick off the NMRA rodeo season in style. In addition, the timed event cattle is guaranteed to be top notch, welcoming cowboys and cowgirls a chance to shine on the arena floor. Contestants will need to become NMRA members prior to competing, but the discounted price of 2013 memberships will run through Sunday, March 31 allowing everyone a chance to be a member and enter this event. There will be no walk-up entries and contestants must use the NMRA Central Entry system to enter. Entries will be taken Monday, March 25 on a temporary CES phone number. Timed event contestants can call 575-354-2018 and rough stock can call 575-937-0851 between 6 and 10 p.m. to enter. Call backs can be made on Tuesday, March 26 between 6 and 9 p.m. by

The weekend will be filled with tons of great rodeo action and great fun as the NMRA plays host to this event. Included in the fun the NMRA is inviting contestants and fans to a BBQ and dance on Saturday night, March 30, 2013. The dinner and dance will be held at the Bosque Farms Rodeo Grounds between 8 and 11 p.m. The NMRA is excited to bring this year’s Membership Drive Rodeo to the rodeo community. Equine Herpesvirus confirmed in horse stalled at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver The Colorado Department of Agriculture is investigating one confirmed case of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) within the state. A quarantine has been placed on seven horses including the index case; a hold order has been placed on six additional horses that may have had direct contact. The affected horse, a 6-year-old gelding from Texas, is part of the team of Quarter Horses used during the National Western Stock Show rodeo to pull a stagecoach during rodeo performances. The horse began showing clinical signs January 27 and was transported to the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for diagnosis and treatment. The diagnosis of Equine Herpesvirus was confirmed January 28, 2013, the affected horse is isolated and in stable condition. The other horses from the team are under quarantine at the NWSS coliseum and hold orders have been placed on other contact horses. The affected horse was housed in the coliseum at the National Western from January 7-28. Neither the gelding nor the rest of the team had any contact with horses being housed and shown in the

45

Events Center and the Hall of Education. Horse owners who traveled to the NWSS and participated in events in the coliseum should monitor their horses for clinical signs and contact their veterinarian immediately if their horse becomes ill or has a fever. Owners who have horses with clinical signs consistent with neurological EHV-1 infection should consult their veterinarian. Symptoms include fever, decreased coordination, nasal discharge, urine dribbling, loss of tail tone, hind limb weakness, leaning against a wall or fence to maintain balance, lethargy and the inability to rise. While there is no cure, the symptoms of the disease may be treatable. EHV-1 is not transmissible to people; it can be a serious disease of horses that can cause respiratory, neurologic disease and death. The most common way for EHV-1 to spread is by direct horse-to-horse contact. The virus can also spread through the air, contaminated equipment, clothing and hands. EHV-1 was also diagnosed in Douglas County, Colorado, in 2012. In early May, one horse tested positive for EHV-1. Prior to exhibiting signs of the disease, the affected horse had recently traveled to Colorado from Iowa. The Douglas County horse was euthanized after showing severe neurological signs associated with the disease. Courtesy of American Quarter Horse Association

kay, okay. I heard you. I have been given grief over the past month from several people who have told me to quit talking so much about the good and find some “Dirt” for this monthly installment. So, here it goes. I sat through part of a NMRA meeting a month or so ago and, although I told those in attendance I would not put pen to paper, or I guess it would be fingers to keyboard, anything said there, one thing continues to stand out in my mind. That was the discussion of turnouts at rodeos and how they are affecting the association. Thinking back, I can count on about two fingers how many times I turned out at a rodeo. One was due to a death in the family and the other was due to car trouble making me late. I guess though, after sitting in on the meeting, it has become a bigger problem over the past few years. I just can’t figure it out. If you enter up, show up! If you don’t have the cash to pay your entries, go get a job, ask your uncle for a loan or rob Peter to pay Paul. But for no reason enter and then turnout. It affects the association, the rodeo committee, other contestants, the stock contractor and the rodeo. For those who turnout

on a regular basis, it is much bigger than your own circumstances. The governing body of the rodeo has to figure out a way to overcome what is lost from your lack of responsibility. Trust me, the sport is not growing at the grassroots level and little things like this continue to slow down progress. Man – I feel much better getting that off my chest and, well, I guess the “Dirt” is back! On another note, have you noticed how quiet it has been on the team roping front? Me too! I have been patiently waiting to see if the USTRC is once again stepping up and adding their unprecedented $1-million dollars to the National Finals again this year. I don’t see how they couldn’t due to the great impact it had on the sport last year, but there has been no word of it. Until now! Thanks to Ben Clements and Ferron Lucero’s “Final Spin” YouTube video, the word is out! $1 million will be added to the 2013 Cinch National Finals of Team Roping. With that said, I hope this covers enough “Dirt” for the month. I am looking forward to the spring when there will definitely be more to throw around! Until then – “Dirt” – Keep it under your feet!

$1,275 plus shipping Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up-keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering them. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 Ibs. and it comes with a bladder for more body weight. Body and legs are made from a plastic rubber material that is flexible and very durable.

A terrible thing has been on the increase over the past 20 years or so, particularly noticeable over the last decade. Sadly I have to admit that the worst violators are team ropers. The WPRA Tour Grows For 2013

VSA

In 2012 the WPRA Board of Directors proudly introduced the WPRA Tour. The idea behind the WPRA Tour was twofold. First, the goal was to create a new program that would benefit a broader base of the membership by providing them with increased opportunities to qualify at limited entry rodeos. Secondly, the goal was to help bring more excitement and contestants to a broader group of rodeos across all circuits. Year one met its goals and the plans for 2013 call for expansion. For 2013 the list of participating WPRA Tour rodeos will be expanding to 24. Each WPRA Circuit will be approving 2 rodeos to be part of the WPRA Tour. At CRX’D this point the list of IN HOUSE PROOF approved WPRA Tour rodeos includes: Badlands Mitchell, SD and Mandan, ND California TBA Columbia River Lynden, WA and Omak, WA First Frontier Gerry, NY and Kellettville, PA Great Lakes Spooner, WI and Fort Madison, IA Montana TBA Mountain States Casper, WY, and TBA Prairie North Platte, NE and TBA Southeastern Arcadia, FL and Franklin, TN Texas Pecos, TX and Corpus Christi, TX Turquoise Lovington, NM and Santa Fe, NM Wilderness Spanish Fork, UT and TBA

Prime Performance Nutrition Ropes in New Endorser Prime Performance Nutrition is teaming up with Professional Team Roper, Tyler Magnus of Mason, Texas. This member of the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame is quickly becoming a household name in the rodeo industry. Training many performance horses that go on to compete in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, American Quarter Horse Association and the American Paint Horse Association, Tyler has the added stress of keeping these horses performing at maximum level. “About a year ago I met Tyler and we talked about the trouble that he was having keeping his son’s horse sound. I sent him a pail of Maxum HA to try and two months later Tyler couldn’t wait to tell me that he was back to roping on him,” said Jeff Butler, President of Prime Performance Nutrition. Maxum HA is a combination of glucosamines, chondroitin sulfate, MSM, hyaluronic acid and jam packed with vitamin C. The problem begins when the animal is supplied too little glucosamine to the joints, causing the cartilage to break down. The intersection where age and trauma meet is the point that the animal’s ability to convert glucose and glutamine into glucosamine decline, losing their ability to stimulate cartilage forming cells. Chondroitin sulfates directly attack the enzymes that destroy cartilage allowing the body to, more easily, heal itself. Hyaluronic Acid is a complex of proteins that form a gel-like matrix to guard the cartilage. MSM is essential for the growth and repair of bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and other connective tissues. It’s the experienced science of Prime Performance Nutrition combined with the training prowess of Tyler Magnus that produces horses that love their job and perform at the top of their game.

Cowboy’s Revenge (Best Of)

U

ncle Sam sat fidgeting in the lobby of The Cattleman’s Bank. Finally the receptionist announced, “Mr. Loan A. Ranger will see you now.” Uncle Sam walked timidly into the mahogany paneled office. With his cowboy boots perched on the desk, the President of the Cattleman’s Bank drew on his cigar and motioned for Sam to sit down in a small, stiff backed, uncomfortable chair. “I’ve come to see you about our operating loan,” said U.S. “If I don’t get the money I’ll have to shut down the government. Frankly I am at the end of my rope. You can’t leave us hanging.” “How can you be overdrawn again?” asked the cowboy banker in disbelief. “Haven’t I lectured you for hours-on-end about this in the past?” “Yes sir, you did, but you don’t have any idea what I’ve been through.” “Oh yes I do. About 17 trillion dollars, that’s all,” replied The Loan A. Ranger as he reached for the financial statement of Uncle Sam’s operation. The accumulated past due notes were as thick as a huge book and he turned to Chapter Eleven. “Last year alone I see you went over a trillion dollars in debt,” said the banker. “Do you have any concept of how much a trillion dollars is and how many cows that would buy?” “I had to borrow the money to buy new machinery. They don’t give those drones away you know. Besides you told me that it was a good time to expand. You gave me a toaster for every account I opened. Don’t you remember? You said I looked good on paper.” “Yes, but our depositors want cash. Times are not that great for them either you know?” said the Loan A. Ranger, taking another puff on his cigar. “You shouldn’t have expanded like that. And you’ve set no money aside for the future.”

“But I swear, it wasn’t my fault,” said U.S., squirming uncomfortably in his seat. “We’ve had huge medical bills, we’ve got more kids in college, we’re supporting our old folks, and it’s hard to keep up with the Chinese with them growing like they are.” “Yeah, they were in here to see me yesterday. I turned them down, too.” “But you can’t blame US. We just got a little behind.” “You call trillions of dollars “a little,” roared the cattleman banker. “Your system of checks and balances looks like too many checks and no balance to me.” “But Mr. Banker sir, with all due respect, these have been difficult times for the U.S. operation. I have had to support a larger family. We have more dependents with more people to feed, and the kids needed shoes for school. Please Mr. Loan A. Ranger,” said Uncle Sam as he got down on his knees, “I plead with you. We’ve been together a long time. Can’t you just carry me a little while until times get better?” “Do you have the money to pay your debts or don’t you?” roared the cowboy banker. “If you have the money I can loan you some more, but if you are broke I want everything you’ve got. Don’t you remember, this is how it was when the boot was on the other foot?” “I can print more money and pay you the interest,” replied Uncle Sam, “but it is the principle I’m having a little trouble with.” “Your interests no longer interest me. It’s the principle of the matter I’m talking about,” said the bank President over the top of his glasses. “You are just going to have to learn to live within your means. You owe us over a trillion dollars and we are going to have to sell off some of your assets. I see you have millions of acres on the books. We have no choice but to take your land and your home, although I don’t think we’ll get much for Washington, D.C. Quite frankly, you should be ashamed of yourself. And quit blubbering and begging like a little baby. It’s unbecoming and you’ll ruin the silk carpet. Don’t you think it’s about time you grew up and accepted some responsibility?” wwwLeePittsbooks.com
