ecovering from my first major sunburn of the year tells me that summer is just about here. That, and a look at the upcoming calendar of events shows that the season is about to hit its stride. Of course it also means kids are out of school and the Jr. rodeo schedule will be in full swing as well. An effort to do more to get kids involved in the sport has gained a lot of traction recently, as people have suddenly realized that neglect in this area for years has resulted in the supply line of new rodeo talent becoming pretty thin. Unfortunately, rodeo is behind the curve in its attempts to revive youth rodeo, and it looks like there will be a lot of lean rodeo years ahead as a result. On the team roping side, I don’t think the USTRC has ever received the credit it deserves for its dedication to youth team roping since its inception. If it weren’t for their sustained commitment to youth, I think team roping would have fared far worse over the past few years than it did. The USTRC doesn’t always get it right, but in this case they most certainly did. Every team roping producer in the country should send a “thank you” note to the USTRC for keeping the “Jr. Looper” program viable over the past couple decades, the result of which

has kept the pipeline full of ropers which has been crucial in sustaining the sport during a tough economic stretch. Just my two cents, but it’s another example of how the entire sport of team roping has ridden on the coattails of the USTRC’s efforts. But alas, the problem is deeper than can be fully remedied by even a great youth program. It is a cultural shift that has taken place in our society, the result of which is not conducive to leading kids down any kind of path related to doing anything outdoors. An experience just yesterday seems to illustrate exactly my point. My two girls (7 and 9) have been “working” me to get their old bikes going for months. Looking them over it became clear I was going to have to become a bike mechanic of a higher order than I am, or it was time for new bikes. So, being the last day of their school year, I thought I’d go bike shopping and surprise them. Now I’m not much of a shopper. The extent of my shopping is glancing at the stuff in the aisles at the Home Depot or Lowes, while on my way to get what I came for. But, knowing I needed to go outside my comfort zone, and recognizing that I wasn’t looking for bikes worthy of competing in the “Tour de continued on page 59

slipped flank, a kicking calf, a bobbled tie, mishandling of the slack – anything that could go slightly wrong would have an exponential effect on the outcome. Somehow, 19-year-old Texan Blane Cox found his way safely through the minefield and won the 9th Joe’s Boot Shop Open Calf Roping here April 28 at the Curry County Events Center. Cox, a Cameron, TX native, ‘averaged’ 8.62 seconds on four runs to finish with a 34.47 time besting a field that included the two-time reigning world champion and a host of Wrangler National Finals qualifiers. He didn’t do it with a couple of subhuman speed runs, although he did place third in the first round with an 8.04 and tied for sixth in the third round with a 7.95. He was smooth, solid – and managed the calves he drew in an efficient manner. A sophomore on the Hill College rodeo team in Hillsboro, TX, Cox is headed to the College National Finals Rodeo in July after helping his team to a second-place finish in the Southern Region. He was the region’s All-Around and steer wrestling champion, but managed fifth place in the calf roping, where he never faced a field of competitors even close to the talent that gathered for the JBS. Cox got his day off to a powerful start by winning the Dusty Rhodes/Leroy Radcliff Memorial title in a field of the

best 19-under calf ropers in the southwest. He picked up $1,531 in cash, as well as a $2,000 college scholarship and from there, he was playing on house money. In the Open, Cox got off to a fast start with an 8.04 on his first calf, good enough for third in the round and $1,656. With a number of top pros long on their first, or out of the average, the battle for round money ramped up from there, however. World champion Tuf Cooper, with a barrier on his first, channeled his frustration on the second and stopped the clock in a screaming 6.96 to pocket $2,527. Caleb Schmidt of Yorktown, TX, currently ranked 14th in the world, was second in 7.19 and collected $2,092. Sixth hole went to Cody Waldop of San Angelo, TX with 7.85 and was worth $436. Cox was solid in 9.13 and stood fifth on two head with 17.17. Trent Creager, a

WNFR veteran, was the leader in speedy 15.76 on two, while Schmidt was in second with 16.07. Also in the mix were Randall Carlisle of Castor, LA with 16.46; and Sterling Smith, currently the top-ranked calf roper in the world, at 16.57. Cooper stretched the string to its limits again in the third round, doubling his money with a 7.57. Clay Bonner, an Eastern New Mexico University rodeo team member from Portales, was second in 7.79, knocking down a check for $2,092. Cox made his fastest run of the day, stopping the clock in 7.95. He split sixth with Catfish Brown of Collinsville, TX and the No. 8-ranked roper in the world, E.J. Roberts of Stephenville, TX. Each collected $145. Creager was fast in 8.67, maintaining his lead. His 24.43 time on three was just under seven-tenths ahead of Cox, who stood second going to the championship round at 25.12. Also in the mix were Caddo Lewallen of Morrison, OK at 26.64 on three; Chase Williams of Stephenville, TX at 27.08; Clayton Shaw of Alvord, TX at 27.20; Schmidt at 27.28; and Roberts at 27.57. The top 15 on three moved on to the championship round. Roping slow to fast, there were no misses. But the round got serious at the midway point, when Roberts fired a 7.83 at the field, jumping to the lead with a 35.46 on four. Roping from the No. 6-hole, Schmidt one-upped Roberts with a 7.72 and vaulted to the top with a 35.00 on four. Roping at No. 5, Shaw stopped the

clock in 10.42 and fell back to fourth – at that point. At No. 4, Tarleton State intercollegiate star Williams had just enough trouble to post an 11.89 and fell back to ninth. Caddo Lewallen, the 2004 PRCA rookie of the year, made his bid for the title out of the third hole. Lewallan vaulted to the lead with a 7.89, posting the first sub 35-second total of the day at 34.64. Roping from the second spot, Cox needed 9.51 or better to take the lead – with Creager still to rope. Again, Cox was solid in 9.35, going to lead with 34.47 on four – a mere .06 ahead of Lewallen. Creager rode into the box with 10.03 seconds to win the roping. But he was a heartbeat longer at 10.21 – a time that dropped him to third behind Cox and Lewallen. It was the second time in three years that the winner of the Dusty Rhodes/Leroy Radcliff Memorial for ropers 19-under won the JBS Open title as well. Jesse Clark of Portales claimed both titles in 2011. Clark, who is in the running for the PRCA rookie of the year and now stands 46th in the world standings, had just one successful run in this year’s Open, an 11.97 in the second round. He did pick up a $751 check in the No. 9, winning the second round, however. Defending JBS champion Kyle Dutton of Los Lunas, NM had a strong start, posting a 20.19 time on his first two. Drue Knight of Kermit, TX was second in 55.44 and won $670. Specialty event winners during the weekend were: • Payton Terry of Portales in the Anderson Bean 4-man Cowboy Match Roping. Terry roped and tied four head in 3:18.76, winning $2,000. Kade Wooton of Roswell was second and picked up $1,000. The format features four ropers in the arena at one time. Sixteen calves are turned out and the roper who ropes and ties four head first is the winner. Jerry Fulgham of Clovis picked up a $250 Joe’s Boot Shop gift certificate in the event as well, predicting Terry as the winner and picking his time to finish as 3:20.00. • National Finals veteran Cory Soloman of Prairie View, TX in the Anderson Bean 8-man elimination match. The format eliminates the slowest three ropers in the first round, two in the second round and two in the third round. The remaining two ropers then battle in a two-head average. Soloman was 18.53 on his final two, while Cooper took a no time on his final calf and was eliminated. Soloman won $3,500, while Cooper collected $1,500. Cody King of Fort Sumner picked up a $500 Joe’s Boot Shop gift certificate in the event as well, predicting Soloman as the winner and picking his time on

the final two calves as 18.518. • Nine-year-old Kade Berry of Poolville, TX won $450 and a Circle Y saddle in the Pro-Youth Double Mugging. Young ropers combine talents with a professional in this event. The youth roper must catch, then gets an assist from his designated pro, who flanks the calf. The youth roper then ties the calf for time. Berry, working with WNFR veteran Shane Hanchey of Sulphur, LA, tied calves in 17.7 and 16.259 for a total of 33.99. NMSU head coach Jim Dewey Brown brought in Harry Vold Rodeo to help him produce a top-notch rodeo – a rodeo that has been named Grand Canyon Region Rodeo of the Year nine times including this year. “I think it is very important for the Grand Canyon Region contestants to get a taste of what the CNFR will be like,” Brown said. “So we work hard at providing an over the top production, as well as duplicate the arena conditions.” Recent NMSU graduate Jennifer Scalva said she missed rodeoing at the fairgrounds in Las Cruces but she said, “to rodeo on my own campus was by far my favorite.” Preston McCullar of New Mexico Highlands University, the recently named Grand Canyon Region Men’s All Around Champion was pleased with the NMSU hosted rodeo. “I thought it was a good weekend, a good rodeo and the stock was great,” McCullar said. “The facility was set up great.” NMSU sophomore Nicole Sweazea

fter traveling throughout Arizona and New Mexico to the beautiful and the desolate, the Grand Canyon Region ended the 2012-2013 season in Las Cruces, New Mexico. New Mexico State University hosted the final two rodeos of the year on their very own campus. With the football stadium in the background of most pictures and the rodeo arena that looked like a small PRCA pen the weekend’s action was nothing short of impressive. The weekend included a one-header rodeo all day Friday and a new rodeo Saturday and Sunday that included a long and a short go. Freshman Aubrey Smith from Cochise College won the breakaway at the first rodeo and says that the NMSU rodeo weekend was one of her favorites. “My favorite rodeos were the Fort [Huachuca] and NMSU because the crowds were awesome,” Smith said. “I love having them cheer for you and be pumped up about rodeo.” The stands were filled for every performance and 2012 PRCA Clown of the Year, Justin Rumford kept the crowd entertained and laughing the majority of

As a rodeo competitor a good night’s sleep in a familiar bed must have worked for Sweazea. She ended the year with her second consecutive College National Finals Rodeo qualification. “I felt good and just went for making one consistent run after another. Not trying to be fast or beat anyone, just do my best,” Sweazea said. “And thankfully it was enough to get me qualified for the CNFR again this year.” Also headed to the CNFR Macy Fuller of Mesalands Community College holds a big resume. After winning the Grand Canyon Region All Around her freshman year, Fuller again took the All Around by storm this year and is leading the Women’s All Around National standings as well for the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. “It feels great mainly because all of my hard work and dedication has finally paid off,” Fuller said. “This was my main goal for the year and I have now achieved it and that is an even greater feeling.” Fuller had a successful trip to the CNFR last year claiming the Reserve Goat Tying title and Rookie of the Year. “My goal in Casper is to keep calm and cool, try and make the short round in all of my events, see how things will play out after the short round and hopefully be a national champion,” Fuller said. to the CNFR. “My goals for the CNFR are to make the best runs possible on the cattle I draw, make it to the short round in both events, make good runs, and see where it lays,” McCullar said. Also a freshman Kelsey Lutjen of Central Arizona College says she is practing and mentally preparing herself for for the rapidly approaching rodeo. CR “I am extremely excited and can’t wait to go to Casper to compete,” Lutjen said, “I think it will be a good learning experience for me and I am excited to

represent the Grand Canyon region.” The Grand Canyon Region currently holds four of the national standings first place spots at the close of the regular season: Macy Fuller – Women’s All Around, Bull Riding – Cody Heffernan, Steer Wrestling – Dirk Tavenner, and Georgia Diez – Barrel Racing. “I think that the competition in the Grand Canyon region is some of the VSA IN HOUSE PROOF CRX’D toughest in the nation,” Sweazea said. “We have great competitors go to the CNFR every year and have had many national titles come from the Grand

Canyon region.” “I think we are one of the toughest regions,” Fuller said. “It will make a person put more effort into their practice so that they continue to stay in the top of the region to secure a spot in Casper.” After the two rodeos at NMSU the region rodeos will take a break until the fall. The Grand Canyon Region is sending a stacked set of competitors to the 2013 College National Finals Rodeo. The region wishes the best of luck and safest travels to all of the CNFR qualifiers.

The husband and wife team of Courtney and Clayton Jackson won the Incentive Average. Donnie Johnston from Canadian, Texas and Brian Potter from Dalhart, Texas won the Century Bonus. Joshua Turner from Hatch, New Mexico and Scott Venable were the winners of the Average in the #11 Division. They were 33.85 seconds on four steers and won $7,490, trophy Martin saddles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second place went to Roy Payne from Pampa, Texas and Jimmy Hrbacek from Lockney, Texas with

he Panhandle Classic is a great USTRC event and one that has been around for a long time. The USTRC Team Roping produced by the USTRC Staff took place April 26-28, 2013 in Amarillo, Texas. It was held at the Amarillo National Center and welcomed a slew of ropers from the surrounding area. The first roping of the event was the Open Division. Luke Brown from Morgan Mill, Texas teamed up with his neighbor Jake Long to win first place in the Average with a time of 34.06 seconds on five steers. They won $1,730, trophy Gist bits and ten points for the Priefert US Open tour. Second place in the Average went to the young guns. Aaron Macy and Wesley Thorp took home $1,038 plus points in the tour as well. Third place in the roping went to the Incentive winners Josh Morris and Cade Passig. Tyler Riggan was the superstar of the #15 Division. He and Joe Hughes from Canyon, Texas won the Average of the #15 Division with a time of 24.94 seconds on four steers. The pairing won $2,814, trophy Gist Bits, and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Riggan also won second place in the Average with heeler Bubba Garcia from Portales, New Mexico. They were 26.34 seconds on four steers and earned $2,110 and $2,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Third place went to Aaron Macy from Post, Texas and Lee Walker from Amarillo, Texas. They earned $5,386, trophy Martin saddles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings for roping four steers in 31.30 seconds. Zach Freeman from Dodge City, Kansas and Mike Weir also from Dodge City won second place. Eric Peterson and Weir finished third place. Wyatt Bray and Buster Record won the Incentive Average. The second day of team roping action began with the #12 Gold Plus. Anna Gregory from Amarillo, Texas and Ty Trammell finished in first place with a time of 37.46 seconds on four steers. They won $4,470, trophy Gist buckles and $6,000 in

a time of 36.60 second on four steers. Third place went to the Cheyenne, Wyoming team of Cruz Acosta and Federico Acosta Pinon. Jesse Young and Kolton Good both from Oklahoma won the Incentive Average. The #10 champions were Jace William Thomas from Dalhart, Texas and Matt Schieck from Casper, Wyoming. They were 33.46 seconds on four steers and took home $8,340, trophy Martin saddles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. Second place was Lucas Seymour and Todd Thomas. Joshua Turner and Bobby Jones finished in third place. Turner and Jones also won the Incentive Average. Eddie Joe Pearson and Randy Koehn teamed up to win first place in the Average of the #10 Gold Plus. They were 40.44 seconds on four steers and took home a paycheck for $5,560. They also won trophy Gist buckles and $6,000 in USTRC Flex Earnings. The duo also won the Century Bonus and added another $720 to their winnings. athews Land & Cattle (MLC) is based out of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Las Vegas, NM is also home to the Mathews family that has been involved in the cattle industry for over 120 years. The family has been involved in the team roping industry for the past 13 years. But producing team ropings, although a big part of the family business, is not the only division of the business that is growing. Raising and buying roping cattle has become a very large part of the family operation. Mathews Land & Cattle owns and operates a 1,500 head feedlot where they condition all their cattle. Whether it’s the cattle they have raised or the ones they have bought, the conditioning in the feedlot is a big part of their success. “Conditioning in the feedlot allows us to put the cattle on a high protein diet which keeps them strong but doesn’t allow them to get too big” says Oren Mathews, producer and owner of MLC, “Nutrition is one of the most important things when it comes to having the best stock.” The results of all the hard work and commitment of Oren and his crew have definitely not gone unnoticed. You will find their finished product at events all over the Southwest, not only the events that they themselves produce but with producers from the USTRC and World Series Ropings as well. It is also not uncommon to find their cattle in many practice pens and local jackpots. “From the cattle we raise to the cattle we buy, their size, temperament, and horn characteristics is what we look for, that’s what make them great for roping.” Says Chris Francis, who’s responsibilities are many at MLC, but a couple duties include running the MLC feedlot and team ropings. Like many family owned businesses, you have the benefit of being more independent which has allowed MLC to keep focused on the quality of their cattle, but with that comes the task of doing a lot of the work in-house. At MLC you won’t find a better example

of a family run operation. If you are an employee and not immediate family you sure won’t feel like it. Everyone feels like family and works together as a team. “A lot of our employees team rope also and it is not uncommon to see the cattle truck hauling the roping steers to an event and one of the other employees following with a horse trailer to make sure the truck driver has his team roping horse there so they can compete as well” says Mathews. Deep Water USTRC Affiliate! Deep Water Team Ropings is now a USTRC Affiliate. If the new FISH payout wasn’t enough for you, now you have this great opportunity to rope for Regional and National Shoot-Out positions as well! “Our motto at Deep Water Team Ropings has been, more money to more ropers,” says Michael Fish, “Now we can add to that, more ropers get more points.” All the money earned by ropers at a Deep Water event is added to your USTRC personal earnings. “If you want to make it to the Cinch USTRC Finals, the best end of the year finals anywhere, this format is one of the best ways to get a Shoot-Out position” Fish said. The FISH payout is such that Deep Water Team Ropings takes the ropers pot (80%) and splits that up equally. Sounds simple, but yet is unique to the sport of team roping. Everyone has been one out of the money or won last hole way more than they’ve won first. If ropers can all win more money for placing where we do most often that’s pretty awesome! “Ropers were a little unsure of the format at first, but once they have been to one of our ropings and seen how it works, the feedback has been great.” said Fish. The FISH payout so far seems to be working great and looks like it is here to stay. “We really hope and expect that the FISH payout will offer more ropers a chance to win more money. We believe our payout will let more guys keep their money together and get on to more ropings.” Fish remarked. Now with the addition of becoming a USTRC Affiliate, there is no telling were Michael Fish and Junior Hernandez will take the sport of team roping next. t’s not too soon to start thinking about a cool place to take the family this Fourth of July, park the trailer, let the kids play, saddle the horses and team rope! Well take out the Iphone, press the calendar app and write this one down. July 4th weekend in Show Low at the Linden Valley Arena. This year once again Jack and Cory at The Roping Company are working hard to make their July 4-7, 2013 team roping the place to be. Finding the right destination for the holiday weekend can be tough, but Linden Valley Arena is not just a place to turn steers, it’s a place for the whole family. “We want this to be a family destination” says Jack Goodman, “We want it to be a place where the entire family can enjoy their time over the holiday.” This year’s event starts on Thursday, the 4th of July and runs through Sunday the 7th with an Open Roping all the way down to a #6 Draw. On Saturday there is a Kids Dummy Roping for children ages 3 – 12. With the option of having the many different numbered roping’s over the four

days it gives everyone, young and old an opportunity to saddle up and rope. With The Roping Company focused on making this a family-friendly destination, everyone is making sure the facility is in top shape and ready for everyone to enjoy. “We have worked together with the Perkins family to get the Linden Valley Arena and facilities in the best shape ever. Kay and family have really been helpful with the use of all their equipment,” said Jack. “The cook shack, playground and new bleachers make it real nice for everyone to have a good time.” If you are worried about having a place to park your trailer and roll out the awning, Jack and Cory have thought about that also. “In the past we have had holiday ropings at facilities where it has been a little crowded, but there is plenty of room for parking at the Linden Valley Arena.” Says Jack. The Delong’s homestead is now under the waters of Lake Wallula, on the Columbia River, behind the McNary Dam—since 1954. It was her father who first introduced Mabel to horses, at about age three. She took to them immediately. Within a few short years, the young horsewoman was training with Bill Donovan, a local trick rider. In 1913, she entered her first rodeo, the Walla Walla Stampede and won the trick riding. After winning the next two consecutive years as well, she was asked by George Drumheller of “Drumhellers” Wild West Productions fame, to hit the road doing trick riding and relay races across the country. Her parents agreed to let her go only on the condition she be accompanied by a chaperone. After all, she was a beautiful young lady—just coming of age. So began the professional rodeo career of Mabel Delong. She was a petite gal of five-feet, four-inches and around one-hundred pounds. Newspaper accounts from the day called Mabel, “The Lovely Lady of Rodeo” and some said she looked more

She responded to a newspaper reporter once, “I know you think I’m a paradox, but I belong in the saddle for I’ve been there since I was three. I love the open, dogs, horses, guns, the trees, the flowers...Still I love dresses and everything that goes with them. I can’t tolerate the mannish

women anymore than I can stand the womanish man.” When asked about her and Hugh’s relationship she was quoted, “Now, here’s the way it is with Hugh and me: He’s a one-woman-man, and—well, I’m a one-man-woman. My home is my heaven. Hugh’s my husband, and that doesn’t mean maybe; he’s my manager; he’s my daddy sweet-heart and we’re pals

right down to the heel of our boots.” One of the most famous photographs of Mabel was when she appeared on the cover of the 1926 Cheyenne Frontier Days program, featuring her as a bronc rider, from the same rodeo in 1924. Amazingly, she was smiling and waving to the crowd while riding a bad bronc named, Stranger. She was the first woman ever to grace the cover of Cheyenne’s

She attempted to pass under the horse’s neck and grab the saddle on the other side as they go around the arena full-speed. Even though she had done this numerous times before, somehow, she lost her grip, fell beneath the horse and was trampled. It wasn’t until the formation of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) in 1948 that women began competing in all rodeo events once again. (Although this time it was only against other women, not men as well, like back in Mabel’s day.) During the 1930s, Hugh and Mabel relocated to Hollywood to work in the movies as many rodeo cowboy of that day wound up doing. 1926. As Mabel walked on set, she fainted in front of a gate looking just like the one where she had been trampled. She was rushed to the hospital where physicians reported a hemorrhage had reappeared at the site of the old wound! Later Mabel, along with Bonnie Gray and Bertha Blancett, founded the Association of Film Equestriennes, an association of women stunt riders and actresses. Mabel established herself as a sought-after movie actress and stunt woman in Hollywood. In 1941, Hugh Strickland passed away from a heart attack and Mabel then remarried to a man named Sam Woodward. The couple lived in Buckeye, Arizona where Mabel served the Appaloosa Horse Club on their Board of Directors from 1949 through 1965. As one of the first women elected to the board, Mabel was active in both the local and national levels. She was respected by her colleagues because of her determination and extensive experience as a professional horsewoman. Mabel owned, bred and showed Appaloosas for many years after leaving the rodeo and Hollywood scenes. She has been inducted into the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum Hall of Fame, the ProRodeo Cowboys Hall of Fame, the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame, the Pendleton Hall of Fame and the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, only the induction into Pendleton’s Hall of Fame happened during her lifetime. Today the Mabel Strickland Cowgirl Museum is active in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Mabel Delong Strickland Woodward died in 1976, at age 79, after a long battle with cancer. Her ashes were spread at her home in Buckeye, Arizona. She will forever be remembered as the first lady of rodeo.

The purpose of the certification Rochell Planty program is to provide incentive for professional improvement in the fair management, recognize those who achieve the specific standards and to develop professional status in the field of fair management. Certification also honors those members who have demonstrated their abilities through years of service to their fairs, communities, and the Association. The CFE recognizes excellence in the fair management field. Planty who is also a Certified Meeting Professional has an extensive background with the Arizona National Livestock Show working for the association for the past 23 years in some capacity and as the Director of Public Relations for 16 years. She has strived over the years to expand her personal and professional development and set goals to be able to qualify for the Certified Fair Executive (CFE) Designation. She is also currently enrolled in the Institute of Fair Management Program through IAFE. “I am honored to receive the CFE designation and look forward to being able to continue to contribute to the Fair Industry and share my diverse knowledge in the fair and livestock industry, management and event planning.

HATRC Roping

arch 30, 2013 was not only the day for ropers to try to make it to the pay window at the Horsin’ Around Therapeutic Riding Center Benefit Roping but it was a day to pay-it-forward as well. Ropers, sponsors and volunteers gathered at the Valencia County Sheriff’s Posse Arena and Horseman’s Arena in Belen to raise money for the HATRC special needs riders and their lessons, and that is just what they did. When the event was completed there were winners all around. The proceeds from the event raised enough money to cover therapeutic riding lessons for all the riders of the Horsin’ Around Therapeutic Riding Center for 12 weeks! The first roping of the day was the #9 and when the last flag dropped the winners of the average and buckles were Kelsey Maynard and Gilbert Terrazas. They won the roping with a 36.37 on 3 head and take home pay of $1,792.00. One of the highlights of this roping was when Kelsey Maynard received her buckle

The #12 Slide was the next roping of the day and the ropers were ready to raise some money in this event also. There was a great turn out of contestants for this event and when the numbers where added up the team to top the list was David McCallister and Cody Garcia winning the average with 18.19 on 3 and splitting $2304.00 in prize money. At the end of the day this same team loaded up and drove away with the High Money Winner Saddles for the event also. What a great event this was and like always if it wasn’t for everyone working together to make it happen, paying-it-forward to the riders of HATRC would have not been possible. The Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping Sometimes Change is Good! Story by Ben Clements

he Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping is the pinnacle of the sport of team roping. The annual event is held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and takes place at the end of October each year. Team ropers from all over the world come to enjoy the great production and the enormous payout along with an outstanding prizeline. In 2012 more than $5 Million in cash and prizes was paid out to team ropers over the nine day event. This year USTRC guarantees $1 Million in cash will be added to the Cinch NFTR. Team ropers will have the opportunity to win life-changing amounts of money and experience a production like no other. Team ropers compete all year long for eligibility to this coveted event and USTRC is committed to giving you a red carpet event. This year the USTRC is making some modifications to ensure the days are manageable and the quality of cattle is the best it can possibly be. With more than 8,000 teams in 2012 the days ran longer than ropers preferred and stretched the limits of available Cinch NFTR quality cattle. The first modification is the entry fees in the Preliminary events will be $300 per roper and each roper may enter twice. This will allow ropers to enter and either warm up for or become eligible for entry into the crown jewel ropings or the Shoot Out Divisions. The Shoot Out Division entry fees will be $350 per roper and each roper may enter twice. To enter a USTRC National Shoot Out Division ropers must have USTRC Personal or Flex Earnings. The Priefert US Open is a crowd favorite and certainly an event to watch. This year it is guaranteed to be even more exciting. The roping will be a five-steer average with four full rounds. It will feature the best in the team roping business going head to head and competing for 100% payback. Another great addition to the Cinch NFTR is the United States Invitational Divisions. There will be a US Invitational #12 that will be held on October 30th and a US Invitational #10 (capped at a #6) that will be on October 31st. The ropings will be

limited to 200 teams in each division. The ropings will be $2000 per roper and limited to one entry per roper per division. The Invitationals will be open to all USTRC members 30 years old and older on the day of the roping. No flex earnings will be required to enter these divisions, with the only eligibility requirement being ropers must have participated in a USTRC Sanctioned, Grassroots, Affiliate, WSTR Qualifier or Regional Finals roping during the 2013 season. This will give USTRC members an opportunity to play big and to win even bigger. There will be an 80% payback in each division with 35 ways to win your money back. The ropings will be three full rounds with the top 20 teams on three steers advancing to the main average short round and the top 30 teams advancing on two steers advancing to a three steer consolation average short round. The consolation short round will consist of the fastest teams on two steers from any of the three rounds. Teams with three qualified runs, but too long to make the main short round will be allowed to throw out their longest time, or teams with two qualified runs from any two of the three rounds will be eligible. No team will advance to the consolation short round based on one qualified run. The US Invitational Divisions will certainly be a great addition to the Cinch NFTR. The books are open now for the US Invitational ropings, so look in the SuperLooper Magazine or on the website at www.ustrc.com for entry forms and ad info on the US Invitationals. The USTRC is committed to bringing its members great events and always being on the cutting edge of the sport. Rafter 5 Roping Company It’s Back, It’s Bright and It’s every Tuesday Night. After a six year hiatus, the Rafter 5 Roping Company has brought back it’s Tuesday Night Team Ropings. The weekly event started May 7, 2013 at John English’s Arena in Belen. The Rafter 5 Roping Company has not only been working hard at putting together a great pen of steers, but have upgraded the facility as well. With a new announcers and timers box, great new bright lights and many other improvements to the ground and chutes. You will be hard pressed to find a better roping anywhere in the area on Tuesday nights. “We want to make sure we put on a top notch production” say John English, “we have worked hard on the facility making improvements so that ropers feel they can make the best runs possible. We have a new chute, new lights, good ground and we continuously work hard to make sure the cattle run straight and are as even as possible” The format for the roping is a #12 Slide Pick or Draw with no cap, a #9 Handicap Pick or Draw capped at a #5 and a #6 Pick or Draw capped at a #4. All the ropings are run at the same time with separate payoffs, so it’s not an all-nighter. Just in case you have to come to the roping right after work and miss supper, there is a concession stand with great food by Kim Hise. This year, the richest one-day Open roping in the world will honor the three heelers who have never missed it since 1977 – Allen Bach, Denny Watkins and Mike Beers – by portraying “The Legends” on artist Tanner Bryson’s commemorative painting for the 36th Annual BFI. “When all of us ‘legends’ were kids roping the dummy, we always pretended it was the last steer to win the BFI or the last steer to win the world’s championship,” said four-time world champion Allen Bach, who will partner with his son, Joel Bach. “The BFI starts all that in the heart of a little kid. It’s amazing that Bob [Feist] could start something so prestigious that’s lasted this long, like Wimbledon or the Masters.” The BFI is the only Open roping where the header and heeler have to be invited; where they get just one partner with whom to rope for life-changing money; and where, to rope six steers clean, their horsemanship and mental game have to be flawless. That’s exactly what makes the BFI “the greatest roping in the world” for Watkins,

who will heel this year for Levi Grantham. “The BFI set the money precedent for all other ropings – for the George Strait, for the US Open; for the World Series of Team Roping,” said Watkins, a two-time NFR average winner. Imagine the reaction of then-21-year-old Watkins and the other ropers who coughed up the $500 fee (roughly $2,000 today) for that first BFI in 1977. “It was so much money, but we all wanted to do it,” he said. “I won second with Julio Moreno and it paid $4,500, which was a tremendous amount of money then.” On June 23, Watkins and the other “legends” will autograph the exclusive 36th BFI painting, which will be offered for bid during the annual cowboy auction inside Reno’s Silver Legacy Hotel. The next morning, the trio will be focused on trying to win more than $100,000 and brand-new, hand-engraved gold buckles on which semi-precious rubies spell out the letters “BFI.” The trophy hardware is once again being hand-crafted by Gist Silversmiths after a one-year hiatus. “We’re so excited to be making such a prestigious buckle again – the design is something we’ve put a lot of years into cultivating, and we’re going to maintain that look in what people recognize as the buckle of the BFI,” said Gist Sales Manager Wende Heinen. hat is most likely the longest consecutively running rodeo in the State of New Mexico will be held June 13, 14 and 15th at Red Rock Park in Gallup, New Mexico. This will be the 65th Annual Rodeo presented by the Gallup Lions Club. With the hard working Rodeo Committee and support from the City of Gallup and sponsorships from local merchants, this is one of the largest open rodeos in the Southwest. Before a nightly crowd of seven to nine thousand spectators, this rodeo is performed in two arenas averaging 500 contestants. In addition to the three nightly rodeo performances, the Gallup Lions Club presents a Youth Rodeo on Saturday morning, June 15 for all ages up through 17 years. After Friday and Saturday night’s performances spectators are treated to a fireworks display and can attend a dance sponsored by the Gallup Lions Club Bucking H Rodeo of Blanco, NM will be the stock contractor and this year’s clown is “Backflip” Johnny Dudley, one of the most sought after clowns in the PRCA. The rodeo begins at 7:00 pm each night. This year’s estimated Pay Outs are $65,000 with added prize money at $22,000. Proceeds from the rodeo are used by the Gallup Lions Club, the largest Lions Club in New Mexico, to benefit the local community and organizations in Gallup and McKinley County. t’s always tough and sometimes less desirable to be the first one up or the first one out of the chute. Well I don’t think that will be a problem for this event. The 1st Annual Freddie Torres Memorial Bull Riding in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on July 5 and 6 is not worried about this event being the first one. An event that has not only been designed to provide some of the top bull riding in New Mexico but one that has been put together in the honor of a great man. This man from Truth or Consequences that was an avid supporter of the sport of rodeo, youth activities and building a spirit of community. Freddie Torres was known and respected by many in the equine industry whether it was horse racing or roping, and many remember him as the owner of The Pine

Knot Saloon, always there to greet you with a smile. “My dad was very involved in the community as a business owner, city commissioner and parent. We are doing this event in his honor because he would have wanted something in his memory that was a celebration and would bring good cheer and people would enjoy.” Says Victor Torres, Freddie’s son. Senior Rodeo Contestants to 5-year-olds Stop in Grants for the 86th Annual

he National Senior Pro Rodeo Associations (NSPRA) web-site has on the top of its home page, “No prerequisites for this bunch!” 40 years and older is all that is required!” President of the NSPRA Chuck Melin says “this organization offers older cowboys like me and cowgirls a place to go rodeo when you think there is no place to go. I was ready to retire and this allowed me to get back in the saddle and compete.” And that is exactly what you will see, top Senior Rodeo Contestants competing at rodeos all across the United States and Canada. Members of the association work at making it to the Senior National Finals Rodeo (SNFR) to be held in Las Vegas, NV at Horseman’s Park the last part of October and first of November 2013. The SNFR is the highlight of the year for NSPRA members. Many have rodeoed all year, competing in 30-40 rodeos in the U.S. and Canada, and their opportunity to win a world championship is on the line as they enter this competition.

This year on the road to Las Vegas, National Senior Pro Rodeo Association Contestants will compete in Grants, New Mexico on Thursday and Friday, July 4-5, 2013 during the 89th Annual July 4th Celebration , Wild West Days Rodeo. “This is such a great opportunity for the NSPRA to have this rodeo during the 89th Annual Celebration,” says Melin, “we appreciated how hard the Grants Rodeo Committee works to put this all together.” Not only will the seniors be competing in Grants, but you will be able to see contestants in Team Roping, Open Rodeo, Open 4D Barrel Race, 18 and Under Junior Rodeo as well as a 5 and Under World Champion Dummy Roping. For the Jr. Rodeo contestants the NMJRA will be in Belen, NM on June 7-9, June 1516 is the San Juan County Jr. Rodeo in Farmington and First Impression Rodeo Club will be in Albuquerque on June 22-23. For Bull Riders its Bar Diamond Arena in Yrisarri, NM on June 23 and for the Barrel Racers Rocking Horse Ranch in Moriarty will set up the barrels on June 28 – 30 for the Red, White & Blue Barrel Race. Moving on to the month of July, you better look back at that spread-sheet, or you might start into a tail-spin. From association driven rodeos to open events, the month is packed full of events all across the southwest. The Roping Company will be in Show Low, AZ, at the Linden Valley Arena

on July 4-7, Sharp Production will be hosting their monthly roping in Estancia on July 18, and then Mathews Land & Cattle Company is back at it this time in Amarillo, TX on July 26-28, and remember Rafter 5 Ropings in Belen every Tuesday. Don’t forget to check out the USTRC and WSTR calendars as well for the many events across the southwest during this time also. On the Rodeo Trail, one of the biggest events of the month is the Red Ryder Roundup in Pagosa Springs, Colorado on July 4-6. On July 3-7 is the Grants Rodeo Association Wild West Days Rodeo in Grants, NM. This Rodeo has become a hotspot for rodeo contestants and spectators over the July 4th weekend. Talk about tradition, how about the Round Valley Rodeo, hosted in Springerville, Arizona, it is an open to the world rodeo and has become a historic event in the sunshine state. This one day rodeo event is sponsored by the Apache County Sherriff’s Posse on July 4. For all you night owls, don’t miss Taylor’s 59th Annual Night Rodeo in Taylor, AZ on July 6. In Cimarron, NM, be sure to catch the Maverick Club Rodeo July 4 for some great rodeo action. The All Indian Rodeo Cowboys Association schedule includes Window Rock, AZ; Chinle, AZ; Coolfield, AZ; Dulce, NM and Crowpoint, NM all from July 3 through July 21. t’s back and it’s wild, and after 20 years it is still the #1 Open Bull Riding in the Southwest. Yes, it’s The Wild Thing Championship Bull Riding, brought to you by producer Larry Peterson and the Wild Thing Productions crew. If you are a bull rider or a spectator and you have never attended this event or if you have been to them all, you don’t want to miss this year’s. Larry and his crew are working to make this 20th Annual Wild Thing Championship Bull Riding one you won’t ever forget. The Wild Thing Championship Bull Riding has been named as one of the best bull riding event in the Southwest by Bull Riders TV network. And holding true to that title and working on moving up that list, this year the added money has been increased to $7000 and the total estimated payout for this year will be $25,000. In addition to the increased prize money the winner of the event will take home the Famous Wild Thing Buckle by Red Bluff Buckles. If you are a bull rider you need to be at this event. Last year’s event pushed the attendance capacity of Red Rock State Park in Gallup, New Mexico to over 9000, and even though there was standing room only, everyone walked away having seen one of the best shows in the Four Corner area. Massingale Ropes the Rodeo de Indios All Around Championship

rue to his winning form, Santa Fe, NM cowboy Chase Massingale garnered the most money in two or more events among the more than 400 entries at the AIRCA hosted, dual-sanctioned Rodeo de Indios, April 27-28, 2013 in Albuquerque, NM. Massingale claimed first in the open team roping event worth $969 (his share). Massingale also placed second in the tie down roping event, winning $491. With Massingale’s open team roping event winnings and tie down roping earnings, he won a total of $1,460.

Bareback Riding Indian International Finals Rodeo qualifier bareback rider Delvecchio Kaye soared to the top on V Bar S’s “Lady Gaga” with a score of 79 and $456. Kyle Charley, defending AIRCA champion scored 73 on “Crazy Creek” for second place and $274. Philbert Betoney spurred to a 67 point third place ride and $182. Betoney did most of the work while “V-S” traveled three quarters of the way down the long arena.

Bull Riding Ty Toadlena claimed the bull riding crown by riding “Gangster’s Paradise” to a score of 85 and $924 at the pay window. Moka Francis stepped up to the challenge and landed 82 points on “Whipping Wrangler” that allowed him to take home $765 for second place. Daniel Edmo made the eight-second buzzer with a 71point ride on “I’m a Ganster” that netted a payday worth $605 for third place. Lyle Clark rode to a score of 70 points on “Hot ‘n Dangerous” for fourth place while winning $446. Adrian Apodoca placed fifth on “Southwest” with a score of 64 and $286. Ground money of $130 was split.

Saddle Bronc Riding IIFR qualifier saddle bronc rider Robert Burbank scored 72 points on “Hot Sauce” to take the rodeo’s saddle bronc riding title - he earned $510. Cody Hendren rolled to a 71-point ride on “Straight Edge” to pick up $382 for second place. Ground money of $232 was split.

Springer, NM cowboy Leo Martinez partnered with Brandon Kuydendall to win the event with a 6.8 second catch and $620.

Steer Wrestling In the steer wrestling event, Los Lunas, NM cowboy Mike Murphy was the big winner. Murphy pinned his draw in 5.5 seconds. The first place finish earned $758. Wyatt Lindsay, from Williamsburg, NM downed his steer in 7.7 seconds for second place honors and $568. AIRCA’s Olyne Morris dogged his steer in 7.8 seconds, good for $379 and third place. Fourth place went to Andrew Galloway with a time of 10.4 seconds and $189.

Open Team Roping Massingale and James Gilliland had the fastest time of 4.7 seconds, winning $1,939 and first place. The team of Bodie Baize and Russell Sullivan stopped the clock at 4.8 seconds and took home $1,604 per team for second place. Bryan Lucero and Dustin Williams, and Blaine Redhorse and Doyle Yazzie claimed third/fourth places with identical times of 4.9 seconds and $1,103 per team. Seth Hall and Justin Loya collected $601 with a time of 5.0 seconds for fifth place. Marco Sells and Kevin Yazzie took sixth place with 5.2 seconds and $334 while rounding out the top six.

#10 Team Roping The #10 team roping found two time AIRCA team ropers Walter Livingston and Cash Thomas on top with a time of 7.4 seconds and $1,447 for the team. The team roping duo of Cam Dahozy and Boots Maria took second with 7.6 seconds and $1,206. Coming in third were Cody Ben and Allen Charley with a time of 8.1 seconds and $965. Ladies Barrel Racing Bailey Wiseman won the barrel racing event. Wiseman rounded the cloverleaf pattern in 16.29 seconds to win $758. Kesli Walraven crossed the finish line in a time of 16.33 seconds to win $568 and second place. Sunny Storer and Caren Lamb claimed third and fourth places with identical times of 16.36 seconds and $284 each for the final money winners.

Junior Barrel Racing In the minor event, Destinee Dale completed her ride to first place, winning $276 in the event’s fastest time of 16.52. Callie Edgewater clocked in at 17.08 for $166 for second place. Sharaya Edgewater raced in at 17.51 for $110 and a third place finish among the little competitors.

Junior Bull Riding Also in the minor event, junior bull rider Ramone Curley scored a 70 on “Smoking Pistol” to win first, second and third and $680.

Senior Breakaway Roping The minor event, senior breakaway roping produced Leonard Williams Sr. as the winner with a time of 2.8 seconds for $323. Muholland Wells, NM’s Alvin Smith made his catch in 3.5 seconds and won $242. Victor Begay of Seba Dalkai, AZ made a time of 12.5 seconds and $410 for third place. Ray Jim had a time of 12.7 seconds to win $80.

t was not only Juggler Matt Baker, Stilt Walker “Rollo” and the Swifty Swine Pig Races at the 2013 Verde Valley Fair entertaining the crowd. The Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Associations 2013 Verde Valley Rodeo provided great entertainment for the folks attending this year’s fair also. So, there I am, ambling towards the back of the store looking for the bikes. After a couple of trips back and forth from the toys to the sporting goods and not seeing anything, I asked one of their esteemed, blue smocked, “associates” where the bikes were… to which he replied, “We don’t got no bikes here.”…a grammatical fail, which combined with my instant aggravation at Wal-Mart for not having any bikes (and being a natural smart ass), I replied, “So where are they?” It was obvious by his blank and confused stare, the sarcasm had not been received. “They have some next door at Sams Club,” he told me as I turned to leave. “Okay, I won’t not go there,” I mumbled, walking away. As I was leaving, thinking, “How could Wal-Mart not sell bicycles?” I couldn’t help but notice the abundant supply of battery powered, rideable, toy vehicles of every shape and

concept they had for purchase, then the enormous section of electronic games and gaming accessories. That’s when it hit me… It’s no wonder it’s so hard to get kids involved… sit on their couch all summer playing fictitious games and communicating with cyber friends in their air-conditioned house, or actually go do something. Like I said, there’s been a cultural shift, the result of which is not conducive to loading up the rodeo pipeline. Self-entertainment without effort, seems to be the new trend. It’s a tough battle, but it has to be led by us… the parents. Now I’m not trying to tell anyone how to raise their kids… though in many cases maybe someone should. All I’m saying is that for me, there is a lot more satisfaction watching little girls flying around on their new bikes than I could ever imagine I could get watching them play some stupid video game. And you know what?... It’s better for THEM too.

Championship Bull Riding Hosts Event in West Texas Event Will Benefit Community Affected By Tragic Explosion

hampionship Bull Riding (CBR) will host an event in West, Texas, June 1, 2013. The “First Responder’s Memorial CBR Benefit” will benefit the West Volunteer Fire Department – Special Victims Fund which will assist the victims of a catastrophic explosion that occurred at a fertilizer facility in April. CBR previously worked with the West Fair and Rodeo Committee to produce Bullfest in West, a tremendously popular Horizon Series event held annually for the last two years in June. Tragically, one of the directors responsible for Bullfest in West, William “Buck” Uptmor, was one of the first responders killed in the explosion. After hearing of the heartbreaking events, CBR management decided to take matters into their own hands and help the community of West by allowing the event to continue as a benefit. “We are tremendously touched by the events that have transpired in West. These are our neighbors and our friends. We knew we could not stand by. We had to take action and help,” stated CBR Chairman, Benny Cude. The entire production of the event will be donated, everything from stock to tickets, as

few hours before the final day of the Last Cowboy Standing, nine-time World Champion Ty Murray asked Silvano Alves if he was going to win the $100,000 event. Alves smiled and shook his head yes. He did more than win the Last Cowboy Standing, on Saturday night, in Las Vegas. In the minds of many he solidified himself as the odds-on favorite to win an unprecedented third consecutive world title when the season concludes back in Vegas this coming October. “He’s proven for the last three years in a row that he’s the best guy.” One would be hard-pressed to convince Murray otherwise and the next morning, fellow PBR co-founder Cody Lambert said the 25-year-old Brazilian is the best professional bull rider in the world. Two former World Champions - Michael Gaffney and Justin McBride - agreed. “He was the best bull rider again tonight,” said McBride, “and that ride on Smackdown that was a really good ride. For a righthanded guy that bull is no day off. Gaffney

added, “That’s the first time a right-handed guy has ridden that bull.” Alves claimed the Last Cowboy Standing moniker for the second straight year with a 92.5-point effort in the fourth round after coming down off of David’s Dream a round earlier, when many predicted he had a good chance to win. However, all seven riders in Round 3 L.J. Jenkins, Alves, Nathan Schaper, Valdiron de Oliveira, Aaron Roy, Cody Nance and Joao Ricardo Vieira bucked off, so all seven were brought back for another round and that’s when Alves took the competition to task. He’s the No. 1 ranked rider in the world for a reason. He’s ridden five more bulls than any other rider this year and his 51.72 percent average is the third best among the top contenders for this year’s title. The Vegas event was his second event win of 2013 and, more importantly, going into the summer break he extended his lead atop the standings to 1,319.91 points over Marcho Eguchi, while Shane Proctor slipped to third and trails by 1,358.20 points. “What it all boils down to is staying on

your bulls,” said McBride, when asked about Alves’ success in the progressive style format, “and he’s proven for the last three years in a row that he’s the best guy at that.” “He’s going to ride most of them, is what I think,” Gaffney said. “If you keep running them underneath him he’s going to ride a majority of them. I think, he’s been a little hit and miss lately, from what I hear.” That’s not the case anymore. Smith Hopes Guymon Triumph An Omen GUYMON, Okla. – It was a weekend calculated to enhance Tyler Smith’s belief in talismans, at least very specific, fraught-with-history talismans – nothing so mundane as a lucky penny, four-leaf clover or rabbit’s foot. No, Smith put his faith in the belt buckle he won as the 2010 Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo bull riding champion – the power of positive thinking wrapped around his center of gravity – and his return to glory at the Henry C. Hitch Arena came off without a hitch. The Fruita, Colo., cowboy rode Carr Pro Rodeo’s Rio Bravo for 93 points, which was not just good enough to pull off his second win in Guymon in four years, it was also the highest-scored ride in his six years in ProRodeo and equal to the highest-scored ride in the 2013 season (Brett Stall also had a 93pointer in Denver). At the heart of Smith’s fashion choice was the knowledge that the last time he won in Guymon (on a 90-point ride) was the only year he qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and another winner’s check (of $3,791) would be a very tangible step back toward the Las Vegas stage in December. “I’ve got my Guymon belt on; it’s been good luck,” said Smith, after he took the lead on May 4. “Hopefully (this means) I’ll get another one.” “I’ve had real good luck here. I love coming here.” With wins earlier this season at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz., and the Rapid City (S.D.) Xtreme Bulls, Smith comes out of Guymon in second place in the world standings, $7,938 back of Josh Koschel. After the 2010 Guymon win, Smith was second in the world behind Shawn Hogg, and ended the season third with $156,132. So, yeah, the win was a good omen, but the level of his performance was an even better one. Until Smith climbed onboard him for the May 4 performance, Rio Bravo

had been unridden in 10 outings this season without anybody getting past the five-second mark. “He’s real little,” Smith said. “He probably weighed only 1,000 pounds. He sucked back and got my feet behind me. I shot forward and got my feet set back down. Because he’s so little, it was hard to keep my feet down on him.” The judges recognized the challenges presented by the bull and rewarded Smith. His 93 points was four points better than runner-up Parker Breding and five up on Koschel and Cody Whitney, who tied for third place. The other champions at this $305,723 rodeo were bareback rider Seth Hardwick (88 points), steer wrestler Stockton Graves (12.5 seconds on three head), team ropers Charly Crawford and Ryan Motes (21.1 seconds on three head), saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss (87 points), tie-down roper Cade Swor (25.7 seconds on three head), steer roper Rocky Patterson (67.5 seconds on five head) and barrel racer Michelle McLeod (34.57 seconds on two runs).

PRCA Pickup Man Hopping Dies Of Apparent Heart Attack PRCA pickup man Coke Hopping suffered an apparent heart attack while

working in the arena at the Helotes (Texas) Festival Association Rodeo on May 2 and died later that evening at a San Antonio hospital. He was 55. Hopping was coming to the assistance of the fourth bareback rider of the rodeo’s opening night when he suddenly leaned to one side and fell off his horse. Paramedics rushed to assist him in the arena, performing CPR, using a heart defibrillator and administering epinephrine to get him breathing again, but the damage was too great and he died after being transported 11 miles to University Hospital in San Antonio. A graduate of Texas Tech University and the Texas Christian Ranch Management program, Hopping was due to complete his PhD May 6 at Texas A&M. He had been working with several PRCA staff members on his research on bareback riders for that degree; he had been a bareback rider himself in his days as a rodeo competitor. Hopping was a ranch manager for the EnCana Oil and Gas Company, in Franklin, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Edie; daughter, Dancey Creel; and two sons, current PRCA bullfighter Clint and former PRCA member Tate.

he International Pro Rodeo Association and the International Finals Youth Rodeo are pleased to announce that a major change has been made for the 2013 edition of the “World’s Richest High School Rodeo”. Mike Jackson, Operations Manager of the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center recently announced that Kevin Hampton and Hampton Rodeo Company of Springdale, AR have been selected as the 2013 IFYR stock contractor. For the past 15 consecutive years, Hampton has earned the highest level of accreditation a stock contractor can attain, IPRA Stock Contractor of
