Competitorial N

o shortage of topics this month, so let’s get to it. First, the NMRA Finals are in the books, and though the association is only a shadow of its former self during the years of prosperity, it does appear that things may be coming back a little. It’s a tough path for those looking for ways to continue to quench their rodeo thirst, and even a tougher one for an association trying to keep the sport viable during times like these. There’s still a long way to go, but congratulations to all those who keep trying, and a special nod to those who finished the year with the title of “State Champion” in all events. I urge you to check out the results section for a complete rundown. If there is one thing I hope the NMRA can better address next year with regard to their yearending finals, it’s the timing of the event. Scheduling it to coincide with the USTRC National Finals just isn’t good. Look, I’m sure there were a lot of factors that played a part in the scheduling that I know nothing about, but I’m just going to say that I can’t imagine any circumstance where it’s logical. I know there is, and always will be an underlying tone within the NMRA (and similar associations) of rivalry between rough stock contestants and timed event contestants, particularly team ropers. I’m not going to dissect it, nor am I saying it was some kind of purposeful ploy to put team ropers in the compromising position of choosing one event over the other. I’m just saying that it’s not right to let a group of

THE

competitors chase it up and down the highway all season, and then not do everything you can to let them take part in the finals. Times are hard enough for everyone trying to compete. It just seems that now is the time to be as “inclusive” as possible. And so…. on the USTRC National Finals… Where do you even start? Every year it seems like it’s that same storyline… ”It’s the best team roping event in the world… blah, blah blah…,” and it is, but this year was different. Last year when the USTRC announced that it would be adding a million in cash to this year’s Finals, it got the attention of a lot of ropers. It was not because it was the first time the USTRC had added a million at its finals, but rather, because it was going to be truly “added money.” Instead of collecting a percentage of the payout at USTRC events… an amount that was usually around a million in cash… and then paying it back out at its finals in the form of added money, no such siphoning from the payout occurred in 2012. This meant the million added back at the Finals was true added money. I think by all accounts, it was a pretty big bet on the part of the USTRC, and one that did not guarantee a return of any kind. Well… I think it’s safe to say that it was a bet that paid off. It seems that million that was left in the payouts around the country had a pretty big impact. Not only did it contribute to an increase in membership for the USTRC in the 2012 season, it must have translated into more ropers loading up and going to this year’s finals. With about 600 more individual contestants this year as compared to last, 8,140 teams competed continued on page 7

2012 Rodeo Season Finalized!

F

or the past year, rodeo cowboys and cowgirls have been traveling along highways and byways of the great Southwest heading to or from a rodeo. Miles burnt up on the asphalt, sweat poured onto the arena floor and hard work and determination practiced and performed at rodeos all across the Southwest all came to a crashing crescendo as the 2012 NMRA season wrapped up. The New Mexico Rodeo (NMRA) Finals played out it Abiquiu, New Mexico over the weekend of October 19-20 and contestants gave it one last punch to see if they had what it took to stand out as one of the best. The field of competitors consisted of many

types including the tough, hardweathered veterans of the sport, the young rookies who have stepped into the world of rodeo with big dreams and ambitions and just about everyone in between. The flashy starched shirts and creased hats of this year’s competitors met for the final challenge and what a challenge it was. Although the recent downturn of the economy has hit the rodeo arena, the NMRA continues to be the dominant factor in the state and the contestants who ride the highways to quench their thirst for rodeo competition rally around the local association making history as they go. This season was comparable to

many others as the NMRA continued to hold the reins on many of the great rodeos that are rich in New Mexico soil. The NMRA Finals finished that mark off in high regard and the association and all of its members can be proud to be part of a great organization. This year’s event crowned many top hands inside the rodeo arena. None of these are any more than that of both AllAround Cowboy and Cowgirl. Those honors went home with Kyle Robert in the men’s division and Amber Moore in the women’s division. Both of these talented competitors have risen to the top of their events and have been dominant players inside the arena throughout the year. Of course rodeo would not be the same without rough stock events. This is the action that many come to witness first hand at events and the NMRA had some fantastic contestants throughout the year. The Finals capped off the season awarding top honors to several great hands. This included a rookie to the sport, Zach Nugent who rose to the top of the bareback riding. Hitting high strides, Nugent took home the year-end, Finals rodeo, and the Six Pack Rodeo Series championships, as well as being named the Rookie of the Year. Sharing in the glory and winning the NMRA top award was Cody LeSueur who won the Ranch Bronc riding title. Keeping in stride with the saddle, but moving to the classic event of rodeo, Robert Burbank of Gallup, New Mexico continued his winning ways and captured the NMRA title in Abiquiu. Lastly, the rough stock events finished with Justin Howlett winning the NMRA bull riding title. Any rodeo would not be the same without the high, fast paced action of the performance horses. Referred to the timed events, the horse flesh of the

competitors at the NMRA Finals was second to none and those competing on their backs were just as talented. Beginning with the big men of the rodeo world, Bill Claunch earned his NMRA Steer Wrestling title from across the board in Colorado. Being a veteran of the sport, Claunch who lives in Monte Vista, Colorado knows the NMRA rodeo trail well and capitalized on his years of competition. It was no huge surprise to see Christian Sanchez’s name on the winners list as a NMRA champion. Sanchez has been a top competitor for several years and once again claimed a top honor with a title in the calf roping. Also claiming a piece of the NMRA Calf

Roping, but on the Incentive side of things was Pecos Peralta. Peralta took home the incentive calf roping title. The NMRA Finals played havoc with team ropers, scheduled the same time as the USTRC Finals, but that did not stop a few great hands in the event to show up and demonstrate how to get a steer roped fast. However, the lead set by header, Kyle Roberts and heeler, Diego Castillo throughout the season allowed them to skip the Finals and still win the open team roping titles. The incentive team roping clan showed up strong and gave a great showing of talent inside the arena. In the end, the cowboys who took top honor included header, Andreas Sanchez

and heeler, Tim Lamb. Last, but not least, the women who showed up and took to the arena floor showed their talents and determination measure up to their male counterparts. With horses that seem to break the sound barrier in the barrel race event and the blink of an eye action of the breakaway roping, the women of the NMRA proved their worth for entertainment and excitement. In the fastest of any rodeo event, April Pablo cruised to the Championship in the breakaway roping, blasting past the competition. The cloverleaf pattern in Abiquiu may still be smoking as the NMRA barrel racing finalists were fast and furious. The rodeo wrapped up with one of the most decorated racers in the state taking the title. Once again, the open barrel race went to Caren Lamb. As an up and comer though, incentive barrel racer, Kristi Johnson won the incentive barrel racing title. The Cuervo, NM cowgirl has a bright future in the rodeo arena. Congratulations to all of the NMRA champions, the Finals rodeo champions, those who won go rounds at the event, as well as those who had a chance to compete throughout the year at NMRA sanctioned rodeos. As one of the oldest rodeo associations in the country and one with historic ties to some of the best rodeo competitors in the business, the NMRA Finals proved that the association is continuing to be a dominant force in the sport of rodeo.

Priefert World Series of Team Roping Officially the Richest Rodeo/Roping Event Ever!

T

he World Series of Team Roping Grand Finale returns December 9 through December 15 at South Point Equestrian and Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Twelve months ago the World Series of Team Roping made headlines when it became the fifth richest horse event in the world, and continues with that trend this year by breaking two more world records. In its seventh year, the World Series of Team Roping Grand Finale’s overall payout has caught up to Las Vegas’ National Finals Rodeo record of $6 million dollars. The WSTR Finale jumped from 5th internationally to move into a tie for the 3rd richest horse event in the world. The richest horse-related events of 2012 include the Breeders Cup at $20 million, the Dubai World Cup at $10 million, the World Series of Team Roping at $6 million, the National Finals Rodeo at $6 million, and the Prix de L‘Arc de Triomphe at $5.4 million. Recreational team roping has been outperforming all the cowboy disciplines, including pro rodeo for years, but the National Finals Rodeo has pretty well been untouchable until now. This year the World Series Bloomer Trailers #10 Finale, which is essentially a low-amateur division, will set a new record at $1.77 million dollars. This breaks the $1.5 million dollar NFR team roping payoff as a single division, rodeo/roping event. Las Vegas can proudly lay claim to two of these top five equine events. Individually they are both impressive, but together they distribute $12 million in prize money into the cowboy industry within a 10-day period. Team roping is the largest economical component of the recreational horse world, producing over $60,000,000 in purses each year. The World Series of Team Roping Grand Finale is the richest and most prestigious showcase for the sport. In addition to the daily roping competition, South Point’s “Cowboy Central” will be presenting a Western Gift show, nightly entertainment, the WNFR buckle presentations, and the Benny Binion Bucking Horse Sale. Action will start Sunday, December 9

as more than 2,000 team ropers head to Las Vegas for their chance at a piece of the large purse. During the 2012 season, team ropers competed at 125 WSTR CR qualification events for the right to participate in this event. Ropers from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and Italy are expected to attend. The event will run December 9 through December

15, with action starting each day at 8 a.m. and ending at 6 p.m. A live webcast will run throughout the event and can be found at www.wstroping.com and VSA IN HOUSE PROOF CRX’D www.priefert.com For more information and a full schedule of events, go to www.WSTRoping.com or call 505.898.1755.

uilding on the overwhelming success of the 2012 Mike Cervi Jr. Memorial Pro Classic, the prestigious roping is planning more events for its third year in Casa Grande, Arizona. The Cervi Pro Classic will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, but the roping action spans three days with an #13, a #15 and the Open Cervi Pre Roping on Tuesday, the return of the Cervi Pro Am on Wednesday morning, and two roping clinics on Thursday. With a history of legendary payoffs, top roping action, and a supportive community, the Cervi has grown to be one of the premier events on the roping calendar for both the pros and the fans. “It sure was great to see the grandstands full last year,” said roping producer George Aros. “There is nothing like an enthusiastic crowd when you’re out there roping.” Those fans and the ropers have even more to cheer about with the events planned around the next Cervi Roping. For 2013, the Cervi and its related ropings will once again be featured events of the Casa Grande Cowboy Days, a weeklong celebration of Western Heritage running February 16 - 24. The Tuesday’s pre-roping events get started at noon. The first roping will be a #13, and

books will open at 3:00 for a #15. The Open runs after the #15, allowing pros who competed in Tucson plenty of time to haul up and settle in. All the Tuesday ropings feature the same format of pick two partners for $150 a man, with an 80% payback. The real advantage for the pros is that they have a chance to try out the same fresh steers and the score line as will be used in the Cervi, while getting familiar with the arena. Wednesday’s crowd-pleasing warm up will be the 2nd Annual Cervi Pro-Am Benefit Roping, which kicks off at 9:00 a.m. This event affords a fantastic opportunity for any #4 or under roper to partner with one of the best in the world in three full rounds of competition. A limit of ten amateur headers and ten amateur heelers can enter for $500 per amateur. Last year, entries filled in no time. To accommodate this year’s high demand in the fairest way possible, entries will be taken on line at arosroping.com starting January 1. After the 10 spots are filled, entrants will be placed on a wait list. All teams will receive an embroidered jacket, caps, team photo and all-day entry pass for the Cervi VIP tent. The Average winners will receive the exact same buckle as the Cervi Pro Classic winners, and go-round

winners will receive buckles as well. Proceeds from the Pro/Am will go to the Justin Crisis Fund. All the excitement leads to the signature event on Wednesday, the Mike Cervi Jr. Memorial Pro Classic. With over $40,000 expected to be added to the pot, you can bet that every team will be running their best. The format will be a 5-steer average with money paid on the short go and the final. The entry fees for the Cervi are $300 per roper, enter twice. Fees can be paid by check through January 31, 2012. After that date, it is cash or credit card only. In addition to seriously huge cash payoffs, winners will receive a handsome Gist buckle, and custom Running P saddles. The prize line also includes boots, breast collars, bits and much more. As always, The Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund will come out a big winner as well, as the roping raises funds for the charity. To date, The Cervi has donated over $140,000 to the fund. New to the schedule will be two roping clinics held on Thursday, February 21. Each will be four hours long, and led by some of the biggest names in the business. Ten headers and ten heelers will be accepted into each clinic to keep class sizes small and personal attention at its greatest. These clinics offer a rare opportunity to learn the techniques of some of the hottest ropers on the circuit, and have them coach every single run. The clinics cost $200, and proceeds will benefit the Justin Crisis Fund as well. Clinic registration will be available at arosroping.com January 1, and closes February 1. Aros has upped the game outside the arena as well with some sweet sponsor and competitor perks. The VIP Tent offers ropers and sponsors the hospitality of breakfast, lunch, beverages and snacks throughout the day, as well as a comfortable spot to kick back and visit with friends. “The VIP tent was hugely popular last year. I can’t believe how many burritos we went through,” said Aros. The Cervi events occupy three days of the 3rd Annual Casa Grande Cowboy Days. The weeklong event that surrounds the Cervi kicks off with a downtown parade and Indian Rodeo the first weekend. Canadian ropers can look

T

eam ropers are always looking for a place to compete and when the occasion arises that is more than just another jackpot and a way to give back to society, they seem to come out of the woodwork to enter up. Add to that a chance to win great prizes and good old fashioned cash and ropers throw in their hats to be part of the action. The 1st Annual Rope For the Future fundraiser roping for the Calvary Chapel Academy in Belen, New Mexico was the event that incorporated all of the above. The Calvary Chapel Fundraiser roping held plenty of interest for ropers all across the state who showed up for the two-day event on November 3-4, 2012. The Horsemen’s Arena in Belen, New Mexico filled up fast both days as ropers filled each pot of the eight ropings in support of the future of today’s youth. The chance to win was also on the minds of many who came out to rope. With six saddles, six trophies and 16 buckles up for grabs, ropers had plenty of ways to pack home a great prize. Not only were the ropers awarded with chances to win big cash payouts and great prizes, the Calvary Christian Academy in Belen benefited from the roping. In the end the CCA roping earned the school just over $15,000. This came from the roping itself, the buckles and saddle donations, concessions during the event, and other unnamed donations. Those who helped promote and host this event were very appreciative and thankful to all of the ropers and friends that supported the event. “Thank you all. We could not have pulled this off without all of your help. May God continue to richly bless our school so that we can continue to do his work in making future disciples to go out into this world fully equipped,” said Mrs. Guest, the Office Administrator. In the end, several ropers made out with the event’s biggest awards. This included saddle winners, Perri Sanchez, David McCallister, Lindsey Adcock, Garrett Jacobs, Jerry Kimsey and Alexis Armijo. Trophy winners included Scooter Garcia, Michael Ortega, Blaine Garley, Tristan Sanchez and Kimmy Shoffner. Average winners of each roping also took home great looking trophy buckles.

Brian Sullivan and Seth Hall won the #15 Average, while Kyle Roberts and Perri Sanchez were the buckle winners of the #13 roping. The Open, one-header roping was won by the team of Cooper Wimberly and Tim Gonzales and David McCallister and Dominic Silva were the buckle Average winners of the #12 Slide. Sunday witnessed the final four ropings and gave away the last eight buckles. They went home with Brody Wade and Tristan Sanchez who won the #6 roping, Garret Jacobs and Perri Sanchez who were the #10 winners, Garret Jacobs and Tristan Sanchez who also won the #8 and Lindsey Adcock and Cody Plant who were the Average buckle winners of the #9. The 1st Annual Rope for the Future, Calvary Chapel Academy team roping was a big success. When people unite for a great cause, great things happen. To those who competed, produced, donated money or time or just swung by to watch, visit and support the event, the Calvary Chapel Academy in Belen, New Mexico appreciates all of you. Interview with USTRC President Kirk Bray by Ben Clements

T

he Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping (NFTR) for 2012 is in the history books. The event welcomed over 8,140 teams to Oklahoma City and over 3,650 individual competitors, who roped for $5 million in cash and prizes. Each year after the Cinch NFTR I find time in the busy schedule to visit with USTRC President, Kirk Bray. This year Mr. Bray was extremely pleased with the Cinch NFTR and the USTRC as a whole. Lets talk to Kirk. Ben: First off I want to commend you and the staff on a great 2012 season. The USTRC seems to be rolling along in fine fashion. What is your take on the 2012 Season and the 2012 Cinch NFTR? Kirk: From start to finish the 2012 season was one of the best in USTRC’s twenty-three year history. A mild winter enabled ropers to remain active and the momentum built from there. Event participation held strong throughout the Regional Finals season and set the stage for a great National Finals. Including the Cinch NFTR, USTRC events paid out nearly $25,000,000 in cash in 2012, which is $5 million more than the 2011 season paid out. The 2012 season was an incredible one for the sport of team roping, and more importantly, the ropers. Ben: By all accounts the 2012 Cinch NFTR was a great experience for ropers. What was the key to making it such a great production? Kirk: There were several, but first, it was the support of the ropers. There were 3,656 members that entered this year from 42 states, Brazil, Canada and Mexico. Without the national and international participation, the Finals would be just another roping event. My

hat is off to Jeff Smith and Ike Cox for again providing an excellent set of steers. Even though cattle inventory remains in tight supply, Jeff and Ike, with help from Matt Sanchez, managed to send us a great set of cattle. It takes an incredible amount of work, time and resources to supply cattle for the NFTR and I can’t thank them enough for all they did to make it happen. Last, but certainly not least, the USTRC staff did an amazing job of keeping everything on track and organized before and during the event. The office staff in Stephenville did an amazing job of processing the more than eight thousand entries and preplanning the event. Mike Qualls and the entire chute crew kept the arenas running smoothly and the cattle well sorted and cared for. Their days began well before the sun came up every morning and lasted well after the action ended each day. The office crew, announcers, timers, flaggers and stall crew are the best in the business and take great pride in doing things right. I am very fortunate to be surrounded by such professionals. Their passion for the USTRC and the sport knows no end. It takes more than 120 staff to pull off an event like the NFTR and all of them did their job extremely well. Ben: The team count at this year’s NFTR increased by more than eleven hundred teams over the prior year. What do you attribute the increase to? Kirk: In November of 2011 USTRC announced that beginning the 2012 season it would (1) guarantee one million dollars of added money at the 2012 NFTR from its own pocket, (2) eliminate the Shoot-Out Fund, which was made up of a 5% contribution from the ropers purse at sanctioned events and a 1.7% contribution from the producers commission, (This resulted in an additional $1 million paid out at sanctioned events throughout the season.), (3) change the payout structure at sanctioned events to a full two-thirds

pay back and (4) through an agreement reached with World Series (WS), USTRC would allow earnings won at a WS event to count toward Shoot-Out qualification. These four things helped participation all year and certainly contributed to the increase in teams at the NFTR. Ben: Is there anything out there that you see as a struggle for the 2013 season? Such as cattle, the economy or anything like we have seen in the past. Kirk: While some better, the economy continues to be a concern. Pending the election, we probably won’t know the course the economy takes until after the first of the year. Cattle availability is definitely still a concern. As an industry, we started the 2012 season with a light inventory of roping steers, but by the spring, the Mexico cattle began to cross in greater numbers, and thankfully, that trend continued up to the National Finals. While the Mexico border remains open to crossing horned cattle, the inventory over there isn’t what it used to be. The drought in Chihuahua, Mexico has had a negative impact on herd numbers. In addition, a high feeder cattle market continues to entice breeders in Mexico and in the States to use beef bulls on their horned cows because their calves are worth more at a younger age. That said, USTRC is fortunate to have an alliance with the best roping steer contractors in the business. With their help, we’ve managed through some tough times the past couple of years and will again in the 2013 season. Ben: Thank you for taking time to visit and thanks for all you do for our sport of team roping. I wish the USTRC the very best in 2013 and am excited about the growth in 2012.

There ‘tween a burro and sheep freshly shorn Cooed a little baby, not long ago born Parents huddled - three men gathered round Gazed lovingly, at a babe on the ground Well Cowboy was curious as men usually are & knew right there, the purpose of that star No doubt in his mind, that he was on hand, To witness a miracle - the worlds only perfect man The Babe stared at him, right into his soul Knew all about him, but how did he know? Had piercing blue eyes that seemed to speak The cowboy got a message - knees grew weak Then a horse rip-snorted, he sat right up in bed! Guess he’d been dreamin’, twas all in his head Jumped up with a start, realizing the dream It seemed so real, these things that he’d seen Then a voice came to him - somewhere within Said Cowboy - past is gone, you’re forgiven Trust your instincts inside, for I put ‘em there Remember I’m with you, here and everywhere Tend your horses, cattle and your fellow man For to do right by me, treat ‘em best as you can And remember now, to be kind to children Care for your soul, for you must make amends

Throughout the season, Dynamite opens the doors for ropers on Wednesdays and Sundays. Senior Wednesdays host two ropings which include a #10 and #12 Handicap. Dynamite Sundays hosts three ropings, the #10 Handicap, a #11 Handicap and a #13 Handicap roping. These weekly events are always great ropings and full of lots of team roping action, fun and payouts! On the horizon Dynamite also has a World Series Qualifier scheduled for the

end of December. The New Year’s World Series Qualifier will be held on December 28-30, 2012. This event will host an Open, #15 Handicap, #13 WSTR, #12 WSTR, #11 WSTR, #10 WSTR a #10 a #9 WSTR and a Heavy Weight #8 roping stretched over three days. This has become one of the biggest events of the winter season in Arizona and last year paid out over $400,000 in cash and prizes. It has a nice mix of World Series and jackpot events and utilizes two areas Friday through Sunday to ensure ropers can enjoy the events throughout the day without running late into the evening. Dynamite Arena has become a roping paradise and for many years it has been the Mecca for team roping during the winter season in Arizona. No doubt its reputation has helped shape the sport and helped grow the sport of team roping into what it is today!

Zamora Roping Productions News

K

enny Zamora owner and producer of Zamora Roping Productions has leased the Casa Grande Rodeo Grounds on North Pinal Avenue in Casa Grande, Arizona. Zamora will be producing ropings at the rodeo grounds from January 9, 2013 to March 17, 2013. Zamora Roping Productions enjoyed a very successful season last year at the WW Arena East of Casa Grande. The ropings were so successful that the productions simply outgrew the facility, thus resulting in the move to the Casa Grande Rodeo Grounds for this winters’ events. Zamora will produce ropings every Wednesday and on several weekends throughout the winter. The Wrangler Wednesday Season Opener will be January 9, 2013. The weekend season opener will be January 12-13, 2013. Zamora and staff would like to invite all ropers to come experience some great team roping events this winter at the Casa Grande Rodeo Grounds. Good luck and go get the money! Kenny Zamora

National All Amateurs Arizona Team Roping is “Off to the Races”

I

f you’re coming to Arizona this winter, come on. Everyone is starting to have their ropings and as December rolls around, it will be the hottest place in the country to rope! The NAA (National All Amateurs) would like to welcome all of the ropers to Arizona this year. They have a long

list of events scheduled to entertain the crowds and to award great amounts of cash and prizes throughout the winter season. With many past seasons of great events under their belts, NAA events have become hot-spots all across the valley and will continue to offer ropers events that fit their budgets and their need for great team roping action. To rope at any NAA events and receive the benefits that Ty Yost and the NAA offers, you must first become a

member. A National All Amateur’s Membership is required to rope in any NAA event. Memberships can be purchased for $40 at any NAA event. However, if you are over 70 years old, your membership is free. Any membership that was purchased after September 1, 2012 is good through 2013, but if you had a NAA membership from last year, it will expire December 31, 2012. For those who have an Elite number, you can rope in all NAA ropings, but the same rules apply as that of the cards association. That means two Elites can’t rope together if their combined handicap exceeds the roping number.

You could use a lot of adjectives to describe this one . . . great big, well run, good cattle . . . but the best would be, “one million.” As in $1,000,000 in Added Money - nobody is doing that! Even Cheyenne Frontier Days, one of the biggest rodeos in the world, adds less then $475,000. I really want to tip my hat to USTRC for making that type of commitment to our sport. I had a chance to win some of that money in the #13 Preliminary roping. I was high call by almost three seconds, needing to be a long 11 seconds on the final steer to wrap up the win. I could only catch a leg, alas, back to the practice pen (I love this sport.)

for nearly 5 million in cash and prizes. Still, I have to admit that the number of ropers, payout figures, and the rest that is delivered at the USTRC Finals year after year, is so staggering that it loses some of its eye-popping impact. I don’t mean to sound callous about it, but every year, as ridiculous as it is, it’s the same… the USTRC Finals are phenomenal! This year, however, there was a different feel, a feel that has been missing from the National Finals of Team Roping for a few years now… and it wasn’t just me who noticed. The difference was the overall feeling of excitement about the event and team roping in general. Ropers were just excited about being there and there seemed to be a renewed feeling of energy about roping in general. Of course, there’s no way of telling how this will play out, but it can’t be bad. I’ve been to nearly every NFTR since they began, and in my experience, the overall vibe of ropers at the NFTR is a pretty A good indicator of how the season ahead will fare. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it like this, and I hope that trend continues to hold true.

Cesar De La Cruz Joins the Chute Help Arena Team Chute Help Welcomes the First Member of The Chute Help Arena Team: Cesar De La Cruz Chute Help has made it’s mark on the roping world, and it continues to bring fresh ideas to the practice pen and competition arena. (18 months and 47 events) faster than any rider ever. “The first title was great, but the second one is even better,” said Alves. “Every bull rider dreams of winning the World Championship, and to do it twice is very special.” For the second year in a row, the World Finals drew almost 70,000 fans through five days. The PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals are the richest bull riding event on the planet with a total purse of $2.2 million, including the $1 million bonus to the World Champion. Robson Palermo also entered the record books, becoming the first rider to win the World Finals event title three times, and also the first to win it in backto-back seasons. Palermo finished with 439.25 points and earned $304,333, including $250,000 for the World Finals Event title. He also won the Event Finals title in 2008 and 2011, and has earned $2,339,783 in his career.

ilvano Alves became the first rider in Professional Bull Riders history to win back-to-back Built Ford Tough Series World Championships on Sunday in front of 15,361 fans at the Thomas & Mack Center. Alves earned $1 million for winning the World Championship to bring his season earnings to $1,464,475. In 2011, Alves became the first rider to win the World Championship the year after winning the Rookie of the Year title. Alves has career earnings of $3,248,019, and reached another milestone when he surpassed $3 million faster than any bull rider in history, achieving it in 76 events and 28 months. He also reached $2 million (23 months and 58 events), and $1 million

Jeff Robinson named Stock Contractor of the Year for the third year in row. Robinson is only the fourth contractor in the PBR to win the honor at least three years in a row.

Alves is the first rider in PBR history to win back-to-back world titles and only the fourth rider - following Adriano Moraes (3), Chris Shivers (2) and Justin McBride (2) - to win the world title more than once. Emilio Resende was named the PBR Rookie of the Year with $271,470, including $181,833 after a second-place finish at the World Finals. Resende earned $25,000 when he won the championship round with 89.75 points on David’s Dream (Circle T/3B Bucking Bulls). Asteroid (Circle T Ranch & Rodeo) won the World Champion Bull title with 93.25 points, beating defending champion Bushwacker (Julio Moreno/Richard Oliveira) by 1/4 of a point. Asteroid was 46.50 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round on Sunday while Bushwacker was 46.25 points. Smackdown (Dakota Rodeo/Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Julie Rosen) finished third with 92.25 points followed by Buckey (Wentz Bucking Bulls) with 91.50 points, Rock & Roll (K-C Bucking Bulls/Spark-lin Acres/BadCompany/Ohl) with 90 points, and David’s Dream (Circle

In a hard-fought battle that has seen the top two bulls go back and forth for the past two seasons, it was Asteroid, owned by Jeff Talley and Gene Melton who finally won this year’s World Champion Bull title. T Ranch & Rodeo) with 89.50 points. 2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi finished second in the BFTS season standings after a fourth-place finish in the World Finals. It is the fourth time that Marchi has finished second, and the eighth straight year that he has finished in the Top 7. L.J. Jenkins finished third for the season while Valdiron de Oliveira was fourth, and Austin Meier was fifth.

Injury Arkansas rider Justin Koon was the lone rider unable to finish this year’s World Finals because of injuries. Koon sustained a concussion, broken left forearm, broken jaw, lacerated chin and multiple bruises of the right shoulder and arm when he hit the bull’s head during his ride in Round 4. Meier and two-time World Champion Chris Shivers, who made his final out on Sunday, shared the Lane Frost/Brent Thurman Award, which is presented to the bull rider with the highest-marked ride at the World Finals. Shivers won Round 3 with 90.75 points on Shepherd Hills Sod Buster (D&H Cattle/Luthy/Shepherd Hills Cutlery), and Meier won Round 5 with 90.75 points on Shepherd Hills Trapper (Circle T Ranch & Rodeo). Chad Besplug won $161.718 to capture the Glen Keeley Award, presented to the Canadian bull rider who earns the most money during the season.

Brazilian newcomer Emilio Resende capped a stellar rookie season by finishing second at the World Finals. Resende was third in rookie earnings with $89,000 when he arrived in Las Vegas and by the time he left he pocketed more than $271,000 to win the 2012 Rookie of the Year title.

B Y R YA N D AV I S

I

t’s funny how life rolls on and people continue to fight against all odds to enjoy what they love to do. I just stumbled on an article about an old friend that made me think of this. When I was younger and my friend lived closer, we visited almost every week. This guy had ‘magic’ about him. In addition, he was an exceptional horseman. I watched him with awe many times on the back of a horse. I also witnessed as his life fell apart on two separate occasions. One time during one of these dark moments, I went to visit him on a ranch where he was working. He was living in a cargo box and not a very big one at that, it was maybe 8x10 feet at most. Even at that time, though, he had that great smile and that obvious charm still about him. My friend moved on and although I heard his name mentioned several times over the years, I really lost contact with him. In fact, to this day, I have not talked to him in, I bet, 10 years. The last time I saw him was during the darkest days of my life and I was impressed and lifted up knowing he was there. For that I thank him. Today, however, I stumbled on a story about my old friend and found out he has made it to the top of his game and is now a world champion. It is nice to see his name in print and know that through all of his ups and downs, he finally reached his pinnacle. I bet it won’t be the last time I get to read about him either, as I know he will continue to work hard to reach his goals in life. How do I know this? Well, I think it is something that lies in all of us; a drive, a determination, a burning desire to do our best. This is a hard thing to capture and control and very easy to give up on. However, it lies in all of us and I encourage you to find yours, whatever it may be, and work towards fulfilling it. And, to my friend, if this article finds you, Congratulations partner! Until next time – “Dirt” Keep it under your feet!

One Last Time Throughout the week, the PBR took time to honor retiring athletes. Among those who recently retired during the season or were competing for the last time in Las Vegas were Wiley Petersen, Colby Yates, Unabomber, Black Pearl and No. 2, along with fan favorites and former World Champions Chicken on a Chain and Chris Shivers. As fate would have it, Chicken and Shivers met up on Saturday night in Round 4 of the World Finals. Chicken, who won the world title in 2007 and was making his record-setting seventh appearance at the Finals, bucked off the two-time World Champion in 6.73 seconds in what was billed as a matchup for the ages.

THE

National Steer Roping Finals Patterson Lassos Title on Final Run! Kansas Champion Wins Race to the Finish by Just $418 over 16-time World Champion, Trevor Brazile.

R

ocky Patterson knew he needed to be fast. The 2012 Steer Roping World Championship depended on it. Patterson was. He posted a 10.3-second run to win the 10th go-round at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping and outlast Trevor Brazile by $418 to win his third Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Championship. What’s impressive is that Patterson has won them all in the last four years. What’s more impressive is that the Pratt, Kansas, cowboy dominated Saturday night in the final five rounds of the two-day competition. “This is the closest race in years,” said announcer Charlie Throckmorton, who called the action at his 13th NFSR this weekend. “This is the way it’s supposed to be.” Patterson had held the world standings lead since the fourth go-round, but had two no-times on Friday night. That nearly took him out of contention to place in the top five in the 10-round aggregate race. Brazile, who won the average with 131.7 seconds on 10 runs, held a distinct advantage – as the average winner, the Decatur, Texas, cowboy pocketed a bonus of $15,231. Patterson was the last roper to compete Saturday night knowing he needed to win the final go-round and hope he earned an average check if he were to catch Brazile. Patterson’s 10.3 did both – he finished fifth in the average – making that single run worth $8,308. “A guy always dreams of winning the first one,” said Patterson, 46, who won his first Montana Silversmiths gold buckle in 2009. “Anytime you get to compete in the same arena as Trevor Brazile is a privilege and to be able to come out on top is unbelievable. “I think knowing how fast I had to be helped, because I don’t rope as fast as some of the guys normally, so I knew I had to go at him.” Patterson placed in seven go-rounds and won three. In fact, he placed in all five

rounds on Saturday night, winning two. Of his $29,731, more than $21,000 came on the final night. “That’s just great competition,” said Brazile, a 16-time World Champion who leads the all around standings heading to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December. “When everyone executes, it’s where the chips fall. I was more proud of my performance this week as I have ever been. I feel like I executed better this week, and I don’t feel like I left anything on the table.” “At the end of the day, I have no regrets. My hat’s off to Rocky. That was a lot of pressure he had to overcome as well.” The NFSR was a four-man race from the start, including the year-end leader Cody Lee of Gatesville, Texas, and third-place finisher Vin Fisher, Jr. of Andrews, Texas. When Lee faltered through the rugged 10 rounds, the other three remained tightly knitted. It came down to the final round to decide the world title. Of course, it helped that Patterson had roped lights out all night long. “Everybody knew Trevor was in the lead coming in tonight,” Patterson said. “You can spend a lot of your time worrying about Trevor when you don’t need to, because Trevor is going to take care of Trevor. He’s not going to mess up, so you just have to take care of yourself.” Brazile and Mike Chase of McAlester, Oklahoma, are the only two cowboys to rope and tie down all 10 steers. The result was Brazile’s first NFSR average championship. “That was great competition that came down to the wire,” Brazile said. “I hope the steer roping fans turned out, because they would’ve missed a good one if they didn’t.” Just like the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the event consisted of 10 go-rounds to determine the PRCA World Champion and the final 2012 PRCA Steer Roping World Standings. The Lazy E Arena was built to host the NFSR in 1984 by E.K. Gaylord II. In 2009, the Oklahoma state Legislature unanimously passed a resolution to change the name of the event to honor the late Clem McSpadden, who served for many

ALL-AROUND

years in the Oklahoma Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives while also building a reputation as one of the best announcers in rodeo history. He worked the steer roping finals a record 27 times. McSpadden was also known as the “Voice of the Lazy E.” A portion of the proceeds from the 2012 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping will be donated to the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City and the Clem McSpadden Endowed Chair at Oklahoma State University. The 2012 Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping was presented by National Saddlery, with support from Wrangler, American Farmers & Ranchers Insurance, Boyd Gaming, Montana Silversmiths, the American Quarter Horse Association, Justin Boots, Priefert Ranch & Rodeo Equipment, Ram Rodeo, John Vance Auto Group, Pendleton Whisky, Purina Mills, Kyler Cattle Company, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, The Oklahoman, One Stop Copy Shop, the Fairfield Inn & Suites-Edmond, Best Western-Edmond and the Comfort Suites-Edmond. The Clem McSpadden NFSR was a Lazy E Production. For more information on the NFSR or other Lazy E events, contact the Lazy E Arena, 9600 Lazy E Drive, Guthrie, OK 73044, (405) 282- RIDE, (800) 595RIDE or visit www.lazye.com. Youth 1D & 2D Champion, Delaney Gonzales pictured with Sarah Vance, District 06 Director

As the competition year winds down it’s time to say a big thank you to our members who makes this organization great. Christine, Leanne, and Cookie are wonderful directors, Robin, Mark and Josh are the “Three Amigos” who keep the office running, and Molly and Christine spearheaded our Cancer Benefit race where we raised about 47% more than last year to the tune of $3,400 for the American Cancer Society. We are truly blessed to have members pitch in to set barrels and all the “little stuff ” that makes a race run smoothly. New member Tarra Reynolds got Energen Resources to sponsor the incentive saddle for our March Finals so that is shaping up to be an awesome weekend. We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and may the snow fall, the rains come, and your horses stay warm. Upcoming Races Last race for 2012 December 2, 2012 McGee Park Begins at 11:30 a.m. First race for 2013 February 17, 2013

College Rodeo Alumni “Winter Gathering The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Alumni will have a “Winter Gathering” on Thursday, December 13.2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the South Point Hotel and Casino. We would like to invite the friends of college rodeo: contestants, parents, coaches, faculty, sponsors, and especially former contestants and fans to drop by and get acquainted. Were you a college cowboy or cowgirl back in the day? Are you a current contestant and want to meet some of those who blazed the way for you? Are you the parent of a youngster who loves rodeo? Do you want your children or grandchildren to get that all important college education? Did the opportunity to compete lure you into college where you met great people, had a great time, learned a few things and want those experiences for your kids and grandkids? Or maybe you would just like to hang out in Vegas with some folks you know will share your interests and enjoy your stories? Want to let your Visa card cool down for a while? If you answered yes to any of the above, plan to come to the NIRAA Hospitality Room on Thursday afternoon, December 13, from 1 until 5. We would like to meet you. We think you share our love of college rodeo and we would like to let you know who we are and what we do. And what we do is support college rodeo, preserve the history of college rodeo, give scholarships to current contestants and have a good time. South Point Hotel And Casino located at 9777 Las Vegas Blvd. South Monterey Bay Room Thursday, December 13, 2012 From 1-5 p.m. Refreshments, No Host Bar No Reservations, No Cost, Just Come And Hang Out Of course we would love for you to join the alumni but mostly we just want to get the word out that this organization exists. We need your help to make sure that the tradition of college rodeo endures. For more info: call Sharon Adams, (602) 268-5874 or Butch Bratsky, (406) 855-1542 www.collegerodeoalumni.com

Santa Resigns Dear Virginia, There is no more Santa Claus. I quit. The only one showing up at your house this Christmas with a scruffy beard and a big bag slung over his shoulder will be your older brother, home from school with all his laundry from his first quarter of college. The quacks up here at the North Pole tell me I need two new knees from all the bed-wetting kids who’ve sat on my knee all these years begging for toys they’ll never play with. And have you seen kids these days? Do you know what it’s like to have 200 pounds of dead weight on your knee? Talk about child obesity! It’s like today’s kids have 40 pounds of marbles in their Huggies. I’ve been thrown up on, kicked in the shins for not remembering what one miserable tot asked for, and cussed out by a five-year-old for bringing underwear instead of the latest cell phone. People think I get to go on worldwide junkets1\4 and only V work one day a year, like I’m some Congressman or something. I’m sick

of eating mall hot dogs and ringing a bell by some Salvation Army bucket. Do you have any idea how hard it is being at Macy’s, a parade in Peoria and a mall in Monrovia all at the same time? Constantly being in more than one place at one time is very tiring and now that the holiday shopping season starts in the middle of summer it’s darn near a full time job. I’m getting too old for this! Stop and think of the logistics of delivering toys to every little boy and girl on earth all in one night! That’s something even FedEx and UPS can’t do! And the Post Office? You gotta be kidding. And all for what? Do I get any thanks? Every year I get millions of letters asking for presents under the tree but does anyone bother to thank me? Not one single thank you card. NOT ONE! And stop with the milk and cookies already. I already have four fused disks from carrying around that heavy sack and my belly that jiggles like a “bowl full of jelly.” Just once, would a nice steak and a bottle of scotch be too much to ask for? A GPS would come in real handy too this time of year. I wasn’t built for modern building codes. I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve been cut or stuck in round fireplace inserts that people call chimneys these days. Last year I spent three hours on Christmas Eve in a Detroit jail for “breaking and entering” before I could get my lawyer to spring me. The elves have driven me over the edge, always talking on their cell phones when they’re supposed to be working. I’ve been standing in line for months now trying to buy enough iPhones for all the six-year-olds, but would Apple even think of cutting Santa some slack? Noooo. I could only buy two at a time just like the rest of you. Rudolph has turned into a real prima donna. Has anyone ever stopped to think why he has a red nose? He has a drinking problem, that’s why! We had to do an intervention and he won’t be out of rehab in time for Christmas anyway. Keeping nine reindeer shod is a full time job, and hard on the back, and knowing the hard work that lies ahead of them every Christmas eve, Dancer and Cupid have turned into real head dodgers when I try to rope them. Do you have any idea how much stuff I have to shovel keeping nine reindeer in the air? I need something that can pull more weight, like maybe the Budweiser Clydesdales, but I don’t know how aerodynamic they’d be. I’m sick and I’m tired of keeping track of who’s been naughty and who’s been nice and besides, a simple iPad can keep track of all that stuff easier than I ever could. PETA and the Humane Society have about put me out of business, and besides, you don’t need me anymore. You can get all your junk faster from Amazon.com and not have to pay any sales tax. So I quit. Ho, ho Humbug, I’m outta here. Later, Santa wwwLeePittsbooks.com
