he dust is about settled from the USTRC’s, National Finals of Team Roping, and I don’t imagine they could feel much better about it. In the lead-up to the event, the USTRC was hanging its hat on the “five million” mark for cash and prizes, but after it all shook out, that number was closer to six million. Including the million in cash that the USTRC added to the 9-day event, nearly five and a half million was paid out to team ropers, and I’m guessing from the looks of the prize line and what has been awarded in the past, about another half million or so in prizes were awarded. Now I can’t imagine the USTRC would have been touting a number, lower than what they really anticipated, so the only conclusion that I can draw is that entries into the event must have been 20% or more than their projections. Now, any roping producer will tell you that an event which draws 20% more entries than anticipated is a smashing success, but it has to be even more the case for an event like the NFTR when entries are already measured in the thousands. Of course that’s great news for everyone entered, as it directly results in higher payouts,

the only question is whether or not the event can be produced at the same level of quality with all the added teams. I say this as I recall a similar situation about ten years ago at the NFTR that turned disastrous. The production staff was overwhelmed, the cattle were overwhelmed and the facility was most certainly overwhelmed. By the time it was all said and done, some ropers announced they’d never be back to another NFTR, most of the USTRC staff suffered some form of PTSD, and the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds was fast-tracked to a complete transformation. Well, apparently history would not be repeated. The truth is, I doubt most ropers even knew it at all. For many, this might be the first you’ve heard of it. I mean it’s hard to not notice that extra half-million in cash that was paid out, but to be at the event and make your way around the facility to compete… you’d never know it. In fact, after talking to both ropers and veteran USTRC staffers, to a man, they all were in agreement that this was most likely the most efficient, stress-free, NFTR ever. Oh…and the facility? 2013 Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping

eam roping is a passion for some and an obsession for others. One cannot describe the feeling you get when you back into the box to compete for hundreds of thousands of dollars. There is an intensity that boils deep within your guts and an adrenaline rush that overwhelms your whole body and soul. The Cinch USTRC National Finals of Team Roping (NFTR) is the ultimate team roping experience for not only the team roping competitor but for any team roping enthusiast. This year the Cinch NFTR took place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the state fairgrounds October 26 November 3, 2013. For nine straight days it was the Mecca of team roping. Almost 4,000 individual team ropers from fortythree states and seven different countries made the trip to OKC along with their family and friends. The City welcomed more than ten thousand people to town for the duration of the event. More than seventy-nine hundred teams competed for $5,054,800 in cash and an additional $700,000 in prizes. Team ropers made over 16,500 cattle runs and cashed over 1175 team roping checks. The high money winners of the event earned loads of cash and prizes. Twentyeight-year-old team roper Jace Baker from Mt. Pleasant, Texas earned the most money this year. He took home $79,750 for placing fifth in the Average of the #11 Shoot-Out with partner Tyson

Thompson and first in the #9 Shoot-Out with David Perry. Heath Sanders, 41, from Leachville, Arkansas was a close second as he earned $72,750. Sanders won a fast time in the Gold Plus Shoot-Out with partner Taylor Morgan. He and Nick Gonzales III won the Average and Incentive Average of the #11 Preliminary. Sanders and Morgan came back and won the average of the #10 Shoot-Out. In addition to Baker and Sanders, David Perry earned $64,350, Taylor Morgan won $61,200 and Cliff Wheeler took home $60,750. Needless to say, a lot of team ropers left OKC with big money and with some awesome prizes. The event was certainly an affair that ropers will not soon forget. iving in the Southwest we are very fortunate to have the sport of rodeo available to us all year long. There is not hardly a weekend that goes by that you can’t find a rodeo going on somewhere in the southwest and most of the time not too far from home. Rodeo is a big part of our history and has been the subject of many conversations for folks leaning against the hood of the truck, sitting on the back of a horse, the porch or taking a break on the tailgate of the ranch truck. Those conversations have been about the good, the bad, the stock, the ground, the score and everything in between, but one thing that is constant when it comes to rodeo is the Stock Contractors. Not saying that they are all the same, that would make the sport pretty boring, but they are the major part of the rodeo puzzle when it comes to a rodeo production. With that in mind, who better to talk to then the guys behind the chutes. We caught up with a few of the top Stock Contractors from around the southwest and were thankful to have a few minutes with each to ask a couple of questions about their companies and the rodeo industry.

Buster Webb W/A Rodeo Company, Bloomfield, NM RD: Buster, you recently won 2013 Stock Contractor of the Year for the New Mexico Rodeo Association. Congratulations. You have been doing this for a long time. Tell us a little about the history of your company. Buster: Thank you. We have been in business 47 years. Started the business in 1966, we started with bucking cows and roping calves, borrowed some bucking horses for the first year, then went out on my own ever since. In 1985 we put on 102 rodeos that year. Since that time we don’t put on quite as many in a year. RD: What area of the country do you primarily focus on?

I have. They appreciated the stock and how they performed. Now you have people in the crowd that are more focused on the specialty acts then they are the bucking horses. They don’t understand the stock near as well and like the fast pace and entertainment of the acts, they can relate to that. RD: How does that effect the way you do business? Buster: Now a days it is really important to have a good announcer, good specialty acts, etc. You have to make sure that the entertainment element is at a high level. RD: What are some of the things that can be done to help this industry grow? Buster: I think one of the things that need to be done is all these rodeo associations need to pull together and promote rodeo as a whole. All the way from high school to the PRCA. The more we promote this industry and educate folks about the sport and the western way of life, it will help increase the interest

Buster: We pretty much just cover the southwest. I used to go to Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, and California but now stay mostly in New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. RD: What do you think is different today in the business than 10 years ago? Buster: The big difference that I see is that we are selling entertainment, not the hard core rodeo of years past. The crowds have changed, you use to go to these rodeos 10 years ago and 90% of the people in the grand stands were ranchers and they probably rode horses that Buster Webb receiving the bucked harder than the horses NMRA 2013 Stock Contractor of the Year

The 2014 Mike Cervi Jr. Memorial Pro Classic

he 2014 Mike Cervi Jr. Memorial Pro Classic, will celebrate its 4tth year in Casa Grande, Arizona. The prestigious roping will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, but roping action spans two full days with a #13, a #15 and the Open Cervi Pre Roping on Tuesday, and the return of the Cervi Pro Am on Wednesday morning. With a history of legendary payoffs, top roping action, and a supportive community, the Cervi has grown to be one of the premier events in the roping calendar for both the pros and the fans. “Despite the rain and mud last year, the teams stuck with it, and turned in some lightning fast times,” said roping producer George Aros. “It was also incredible to see fans all decked out with slickers and umbrellas sticking right there with them.”

For 2014, the Cervi and its related ropings will once again be featured events of the Casa Grande Cowboy Days, a weeklong celebration of Western Heritage running February 14 - 23. Tuesday’s pre-roping events get started at noon. The first roping will be a #13, and books will open at 3:00 for a #15. The Open runs after the #15, allowing pros who competed in the Tucson Rodeo plenty of time to haul up and settle in. All the Tuesday ropings feature the same format of pick two partners for $150 a man, with an 80% payback. The real advantage for the pros is that they have a chance to try out the same fresh steers and the score line as will be used in the Cervi, while getting familiar with the arena. Wednesday’s crowd-pleasing warm up will be the 3rd Annual Cervi Pro-Am Benefit

Roping, which kicks off at 9:00 a.m. This event affords a fantastic opportunity for any #4 or under roper to partner with one of the best in the world in 3 full rounds of competition. A limit of ten amateur headers and ten amateur heelers can enter for $500 per amateur. Each year entries fill quickly. To

both spectators and contestants. The more everyone works together the better it will be for everyone in this sport. RD: What has been your secret to keeping it all working all these years? Buster: It is most definitely the people I have had working for me. I have some that have been with me for over 25 years. The loyalty and commitment to me and this sport deserves notice. As much as it costs to do this now a days and the little that you can pay these folks, it’s obvious that they are in it because they love the sport and want to make it all work. Without them it would not be possible to do what we do, they have been what has made us successful.

RD: Jerry, how long has your family been in the stock contracting business? Jerry: Well one of the things that we are very proud of is that this is a family run business. It has been handed down in our family for three generations now. My Grandpa was Walt Alsbaugh and he produced his first PRCA rodeo in 1945. My dad worked for my Grandpa for many years, then in 1976 he and

my mom started their rodeo company. My uncle took over Walt’s company after he died and ran it for years. My wife and I ended up buying most of my uncles stock when he was done and also my mom and dads. So now my wife and I have a hold of the reins. My brother and nephews help a lot, my nephews’ even pick-up for me at rodeos. It is nice to have it all in the family. RD: What area of the country do you primarily focus on? Jerry: Right now we primarily work in the Western States, We go from California to Texas, Utah, New Mexico. But we have been all over the US and up to Canada. RD: What do you think is different today in the business than when you Granddad and Dad where in the business? Jerry: I think one of the things different today is there are not as many Stock Contractors out there today that are actually making their living at producing rodeos. The business has seemed to have drawn a lot of wealthier folks that also have other means of making a living. That makes it hard for outfits like ours to compete against. Companies like ours that this is the only source of revenue. RD: What are some of the goals for your business in the future? Jerry: Well I’m not sure if this is a calling or what, but what we love to do is rodeo and we are going to continue to make sure we produce a quality rodeo and produce a great event that you’re not afraid to bring your kids to. We want to produce family entertainment. RD: What are some of the things that can be done to help this industry grow? Jerry: I’m not real sure, I think the lure of the

How big of a presence it will be I don’t know, but we have got to work on getting the younger generation back to being interested and competitive in rodeo. We have got to work on growing our supply or cowboys, and cowgirls. RD:What kinds of things have you done along those lines to help with the education on rodeo? Jerry: We did a rodeo series in Breckenridge, CO and worked with the committee on doing a sort of behind the scenes event where we spent the day before the rodeo offering the public the chance to see how things work behind the chutes and in the arena, roping boxes etc. I figured we would get about 30 or 40 folks, we had almost 200. It was great to see that interest and I think we need to do more things like that to let the public know more and how things work in this industry.

Mark: Well the business is run by me, my two daughters and son-inlaw, Cassidy, Mark Sanchez Charity and Tracie. We were in business in the 70’s and 80’s as Badlands Rodeo Company, so we have been in business in the

neighborhood of 35 years. RD: What area of the country do you cover? Mark: We primarily focus on the four corner states, but the last five years we have produced and sent stock as far north as Montana and as far west as California and Nevada. RD: What do you think is different today in the business than 10 years ago? Mark: We are starting to see some real positives lately in the industry. One of those things is that rodeo committees are starting to really appreciate quality stock contractors once again. There was a stretch there when the value of the stock contractor was underestimated and the focus was just on the lowest bid. Committees are again starting to appreciate the value of a well-run rodeo and how important it is to have a production that runs smooth, whoever it is running their event. RD: Mark, what are some of the goals for your business in the future? Mark: Our company has, and will continue to do a lot of ministry work and rodeo bible camps, but in addition to that and to keep our rodeo company viable we want to produce a limited number of high quality rodeos. We were up to producing 40 rodeos a year three years ago, but this last year we cut our schedule way back because

we want to be known for good rodeos not just a lot of rodeos. RD: What are some of the things that can be done to help this industry grow? Mark: For years I have commented on how important it is to help promote new contestants into this industry. Especially in the rough stock events. after that I worked for Mike Cervi for 17 years. Then 3 years ago we bought Salt River Rodeo Company from Skip Beeler. I am the general manager and have additional partners Cody Resor of Willcox, AZ and Owen Washburn of Lordsburg, NM. Right now we put on about 10 rodeos a year and lease a lot of stock also. We have stock that goes to Cheyenne, the High School Finals, the College Finals and have sent stock to the NFR the past couple of years. RD: Jerry, what do you think is different today in the business than years past? Jerry: What I think is happening at a lot of rodeos today, even the smaller rodeos, is you’re not just seeing one producer bring in all the stock. You have a number of contractors leasing their stock. Which is probably a good thing as you are getting the top end of their string and that helps to support a better quality event. It makes it a bit more difficult on the financial side but where you used to have one contractor doing a three or four performance rodeo you now have three or four contractors and that really helps bring up the quality. RD: Jerry, what is driving that trend? Jerry: I think the focus on quality and the fact that you really need to have a top quality production now more than ever. If you want to draw the contestants and the spectators you need to put on the best show you possibly can. RD: What are some of the goals for your business in the future? Jerry: We are trying to put together the best string of bulls and horses we possibly can. We have established a pretty good following of riders and I think it is because they know that our stock is good quality and that when they go to one of our rodeos it’s not a drawing contest they have a legitimate chance at making a good ride and winning some money. RD: What are some of the things that can be done to help this industry grow? Jerry: I think the industry needs to focus on the small rodeos again and the part time cowboys. Sell that cowboy image and the western way of life, it truly is a great way of life and people in rural America want to see it. By supporting that I think it would really help promote the sport. You can go anywhere in the world and the American cowboy is recognized. If we can get that momentum going again in this country I think we will see an increase in the industry. As we concluded the interviews it was just amazing to realize how much history and knowledge was available with these hard working men, women, their partners and their families. As we continue to reach out in the sport of rodeo to see what has changed, how we all can help to make this a bigger and better industry, I would personally like to thank these companies for sharing their time and knowledge and I look forward to the next set of interviews and I hope you do to.

ccording to author Clifford Westermeier in 1947, “Leonard Stroud was one of the first cowboys to make a business and, certainly, a career of contesting (in rodeo).”

Stroud was born near Monkstown, Texas, December 1, 1893 into a ranching family. He left home at sixteen to join the Howe Circus and, after becoming a big hit, later joined the Ringling Brothers Circus where he performed in “Wild West” trick riding and bronc riding exhibitions. Due to his popularity, he was paid a phenomenal sum (for a cowboy) of $25 per week! He also toured with Pawnee Bill. Deciding to follow rodeo instead, Leonard embarked upon a very successful career. During his rodeo prime (1914 1924), he competed in almost every event including trick and roman riding, trick roping, saddle and bareback bronc riding, steer and calf roping and bulldogging. Rodeo producers often had to rearrange schedules to accommodate Stroud’s participation in so many events. Trick riding is what he really became famous for however. (It should be noted here that trick riding was a judged event much like the rough stock events up until the 1930s.) He is credited for being the first to perform such moves as going under the belly of a horse at a full gallop, passing under the horses neck to the other side at a full gallop and there is a trick riding move named for him to this day called the “Stroud Standout.” In this move, the rider “stands” out to the side of the horse, creating a ninety degree angle between horse and rider—and he would do rope tricks while “out there.” Stroud would also do many maneuvers while Roman riding— things like jumping over a parked car— with people in it! He was a crowd favorite, always flashy and colorful, and was known far and wide as a “showman.”

Leonard rode a saddle, specially designed by him and Porter Saddlery of Phoenix, Arizona, which incorporated several unique features, many of which are still evident (and now standard) on today’s trick riding saddles. First there was a very elongated saddle horn, serving as a central hand-hold. Other modifications included slotted handholds attached to the rear skirting, a low (practically flat) cantle, special saddle strings which could serve as handholds and various other leather straps. Even though he was one of the best riders of his day, Leonard suffered injuries along the way. Once at a Colorado rodeo he slipped and fell under the horse while attempting to pass to the other side. He broke three ribs! Aside from being the undisputed World Champion Trick Rider between 1914 and 1924, Leonard was also a serious contender in the other events he entered. He learned rope tricks from none other than Will Rogers, becoming an accomplished trick roper. This also helped his roping abilities in the calf and steer roping, where he won many titles at big rodeos. Of course, his riding abilities were second to none, this is evident of the many bronc riding titles he won, including Cheyenne in 1918. Of course, nobody wins all of the time. Yakima Canutt, in his memoirs, tells a hilarious story about the El Paso, Texas rodeo of 1921. “Leonard Stroud rode a wild bronc that had been brought over from the Mexican side...He was a small horse, but could he buck! He was a crooked, fast sunfisher. He really unloaded Leonard. Doubleday, the official rodeo photographer, got a picture of it and Stroud gave him ten

dollars to destroy the negative. I gave him ten dollars to print me up several of the photos and inscribe them, ‘Leonard Stroud Showing the Boys How. A Yakima Canutt Photo.’ I passed them out to the bronc riders. It got a good laugh.” Along the way, Leonard married Mamie Saunders Stroud who was also an accomplished trick rider and bronc rider. She got her start in Lucille Mulhall’s Roundup. The duo competed in many rodeos together throughout their storied careers. They moved from Texas to Oklahoma, and eventually made their permanent home in Rocky Ford, Colorado where they remained involved in rodeo in one aspect or another the rest of their lives. Something that stands out during this period is the fact that most rodeo cowboys during the 1930s were supportive of the new cowboy organization know as the Cowboy Turtles Association (CTA). Not so with Leonard. While acting as the Arena Director of the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo, only months after the CTA was formed, he was against what he called the “Cowboy Union.” Leonard is quoted here in the Pueblo Indicator on July 31, 1937, “It won’t work (the CTAs threat to strike if certain demands are not met). The cowboys can’t ride me. The expression, ‘ride ‘em cowboy,’ refers to horses and cattle, not me!” For reasons of his own, Leonard remained opposed to the CTA and never joined up. The greatest trick rider from the early days of rodeo died June 29, 1961 due to health issues at Denver, Colorado area hospital. he Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Posse Arena in Albuquerque, NM was the place to be on October 25 -27, 2013. Team ropers gathered for ZD Cattle Companies “Big Bucks Rock & Rope” event, and rock and rope is just what they did. Friday started out with the #13. Grant A Koenig and Fernando Gonzales roped 4 steers faster than anyone else to win the roping with a 33.71 on four and take home $1,120. Following the #13 was the #12 where Grant Koenig decided to partner with Taten Koenig for this roping and ended up at the top of the list to win this roping also with a 37.71 on 4 and pocket M$1,500 for their effort. Saturday was the #11. In this roping the team ropers were making a run at a long list of prizes and prize money. First in the average paid $3,000 and saddles. For 2nd through 6th the roping paid from $2,000 down to $400 plus buckles, jackets and sweatshirts. In addition the Highpoint roper of the roping got to carry off a briefcase with $5,000! When the sun set on Saturday the winners of the #11 average were Alfredo Martinez and Faustino Enriquez with a 32.61. The Highpoint Roper for the #11 was Fernando Gonzales and the briefcase handle fit his hand real well. Sunday ended the roping with the #4 and under. Fred Casanova and Tino Mendoza showed the crowd how to “rock and rope” as they held off the pack to win the roping with a 26.79 on three. Like the #11 this roping paid some great prizes and payoffs down to the 6th hole. The Highpoint Roper in this division was Daniel Montoya, who like Fernando, really liked his briefcase. Queen Creek Junior Rodeo Association (QCJRA) held the second weekend of competition for their 2013-2014 Rodeo season. This weekend the cowboys and cowgirls gathered at Queen Creek Horseshoe Park. It was another great weekend of some top-notch competition. OCJRA Mission: Queen Creek Junior Rodeo Association is committed to providing a family environment in which children may obtain and develop the basic skills of rodeo. The rodeo and roping arena have been in place for the past five years now, but this latest addition of the DC Club started about two years ago and has finished off the center to where now the event center is one of a kind in the area. “I have always been involved in the western lifestyle, from 4-H to junior rodeo when I was a kid, to roping as an adult” say Dennis, “Now I have family that are involved in that lifestyle and I wanted to help build an asset for the community that would support those kind of events.” The DC Club is indeed an asset to the community and if you are planning an event it would be worth a trip or call to see if this facility might work for you. that nightmarish event years ago… working my way around mound after mound of piled horse crap, that literally could not be removed fast enough and fighting your way through a tangled logistical nightmare of arenas, stall barns and parking hell… nothing but complete congratulations are in order for all the changes and remodeling that the OKC fairgrounds has incorporated over the last several years. I can’t imagine there is another facility on the planet that could handle an event like the NFTR with the same level of efficiency. As for the event itself, as usual, the geographical location lends itself to be represented disproportionally by ropers form Texas and Oklahoma, but that does not mean ropers from New Mexico and Arizona didn’t make their presence known. No question the most noteworthy was the performance by Arizonans, Aaron Tsinigine and 7-time world Champion, Clay Cooper. Even though Clay now lists Gardenville, NV as home, he will always be an Arizonan to most of us. Together, Tsinigine and Cooper

fought through an assembled collection of the very best team ropers in the world in the Open. Finishing out in spectacular fashion, their short-go winning time of 5.85, put them on top in one of the best short rounds ever. I’m sure it was something they won’t soon forget either… NFTR, U.S. Open Champions, and over $100,000 in cash, that’s a pretty good day. All totaled, ropers from Arizona and New Mexico hauled away about a half million in cash. And with that, the 2013 USTRC season came to an end and the new season has already begun. Congratulations to the USTRC for once again leading by example. Their continued efforts in expanding the sport and the unparalleled job they do in bringing team ropers an event where National Champions can be crowned across a wide variety of skill levels is what not only keeps the sport alive, but keeps an entire industry moving forward. …..Great Job!

by Lee Pitts “It’s better to know the country than to be the best cowboy.” I don’t know who first uttered those words but he or she was sure cow savvy. I remember the first day working on a ranch after I graduated from college when the owner started barking out my instructions for the day. “I want you to close the gate to Green Field and bring in the bulls from Dry Springs.” First of all, it was the middle of winter and there weren’t any “green fields” anywhere. They were all brown. And secondly, if it was a dry spring how would I know it was a spring? Like the name says, it was “dry.” Basically, there are four ways that landmarks on a ranch get their name. The first is topographically in which the landscape becomes the landmarks. Some good examples I’ve encountered include Mud Flats, Mirror Lake, Corduroy Road, Rock Pile, Truck Ruts and Devil’s Speedbump, so named because it would slow a rider up trying to go around all the

Landmarks and Landlords fire ant hills and squirrel holes. Sometimes the ranch takes the name of a geographical landmark, such as Split Butte, Fire Mountain or the Bell Ranch. If the country is so flat you can see for two days, there are no water features or trees, and the vegetation is so sparse it would starve a jackrabbit, the pioneers then got creative and found other ways to name landmarks. I worked on one ranch where the owner would say stuff like, “We need to do some fence work over by Anaplaz Ann,” or “Take some salt out to Rattlesnake Bite.” He might say, “I saw a cow bogged down in Cow Carcass Creek.” It turned out he had named the features on his ranch after medical maladies in which an animal died and her rotting bones, bleached white by the sun, were the only benchmarks. (At least I hope they were animals!) He just left the skeletons where they fell, all except the skull, that is. Those he sold to an antique dealer in town for city folks to buy and put in their gardens. For many years the sale of those heads often made the difference between profit and loss. The only ground I’ve ever owned was either under the house in which I lived, or on the bottom of my boots. So I had to lease land to run cows and sheep. I leased one ranch in which there were signs of a previous civilization everywhere and the landmarks were rusting pieces of junk littering the landscape. It seems the previous owner liked to buy stuff but since he had no storage he just piled it in the weeds. He was a hoarder of rusty metal. We were on the place for many years and I’m proud to say I named many of the features, including Dead Jeep Hill, Bedpan Pasture, Mattress Springs and Bicycle Tree. The latter was a Willow Tree that had an old bicycle in the fork of its branches. Some have suggested that the bicycle got there when the seas receded and the bike lodged itself in the branches. Good explanation except I don’t think they had bikes 480 million years ago in the Paleozoic era. And I don’t think global warming has raised the oceans that high yet. Another way ranchers name landmarks is after famous people or animals. I worked on one ranch in my youth that was 100,000 acres... if you flattened all the mountains out. Actually it was only a little over 1,000 acres. One landmark on the ranch was Mount Lincoln, so named because if you tilted you head 90 degrees you could see the outline of our 16th President. Well, some people could. We buried our dog on a little rise we now call Aussie Hill and my goal in life is to someday have a place on that ranch named after me. For some of us, that’s the only way our names will live on after we’re gone. So I’ve asked my wife to cremate me and scatter my ashes on the ranch so that some day when cowboys gather to have the range boss line them out for that day’s gather, in the early morning fog he’ll say, “Nimrod, you and Jacobs bring in the cows grazing on Lee Pitts.” wwwLeePittsbooks.com
