uncan, Oklahoma had a different flair for the Thanksgiving weekend as over 578 calf ropers from all over the United States descended on the town to participate in the 8th Annual Rising Stars Calf Roping. This was the second year for Duncan to host the 4-day weekend event consisting of every age group from 12 & Under to the All-Stars. Producers, Mark Holder and Chris Neal, once again went for the best of the best as Cactus Saddlery became the official saddle sponsor for this year’s trophy saddles. Once again Lankford Leather & Tack hand-tooled the rope cans donated by Smith Brothers Roping Supplies that were given to all the fastest calf winners. And last, but not least, the prestigious All-Star saddle was designed and crafted by Hogg Saddles of Conway, Arkansas. Barry Burk, producer of the Barry Burk Jr. Roping, once again donated a saddle to the youngest tie down roper. After the traditional Thanksgiving turkey and dressing, along with all the trimmings, was served through the concession stand, the limited edition of the All-Star Calf Roping got started at 1 p.m. Eighty-one of the top ropers in the nation competed on three head, then the top twelve came back for the All-Star Shoot-Out. captured the first and second rounds with a consecutive time of 7.8 seconds to win each go. But Hunter Herrin stepped things up in the third round when he stopped the clock in 6.8 seconds to win the round and the fastest calf. Oklahoma native Blair Burk stayed consistent as he captured the Average win with a total of 25.4 on three head. But the winner of the All-Star Shoot-Out, Trent Creager of Stillwater, Oklahoma, took home what everyone else wanted, the prestigious Hogg saddle. Friday morning started at 8 a.m. when we were greeted by the Duncan Convention and Visitors Bureau with coffee, juice and doughnuts. Then fiftyfive 12 & Under Tie Down ropers made their way into the arena to start off the day. Ty Cochran took over the first round with a time of 12.4 seconds. The second go went to Ty Harris with a time of 13.7 seconds. In the third round, Cooper Martin from Alma, Kansas, turned in a time of 11.7, Marcus Theriot

the short-go and had the fastest calf with an 8.4 seconds run. But once again, Reid Zapalac came out on top when he won the Average in 41.3 on three head and took home the Cactus saddle. The numbers were up from last year as 81 12 & Under Breakaway girls and boys were up early Saturday morning, ready to set the pace for the day. Brenton Hall from Jay, Oklahoma took the first round with a time of 2.44 seconds. The second round went to Logan Cook when he turned in a time of 2.65. Then things got fast and furious as Westyn Hughes from Caldwell, Texas took over the third go with a time

got in the hot seat when he won the short-go and the fastest calf in 9.8 seconds. But it was Cooper Martin who prevailed to win the Average and the beautiful Cactus saddle. The 13-15 immediately followed the first roping, and Reid Zapalac of Smithville, Texas took the first round with a time of 9.7 seconds. Another Texas cowboy, Ryan Rule, won the second round with a time of 9.4, and Sloan Short and Riley Smith split the third go when they turned in a time of 9.6 seconds. The 13-15 Tie Down was definitely dominated by Texans when Mason Bowen from Troup, Texas won

of 2.13 seconds which also was the fastest calf. A Sumner, Texas cowboy, Clay Mills, was the winner of the shortgo. But Westyn Hughes was the big winner, when he won the Average, took home the saddle and also the custom made rope can. But the day was just getting started as 76 13-15 Breakaway ropers made their way into the arena to strut their stuff. And one Copan, Oklahoma cowboy did just that as Tylen Layton won the first, second and third go rounds with pretty consistent times of 1.72, 1.88 and 1.63 seconds. But Spur Valdez of Dimmitt, Texas took the short-go with a time of 2.47 seconds. The girls said, “Move over boys” when
Whitney DeSalvo of Springfield, Arkansas took over the Average with a combined time of 10.03 seconds on three head to capture the title and the Cactus saddle. A new twist was added to Saturday’s roping as the first round of the 19 & Under Girls Breakaway ended the night. Sadie Watkins from Miami, Texas took over the first round with a time of 2.23 seconds. The next morning things got even faster in the second go as Lindsey Walters stopped the clock in 2.09 seconds. Shelbie Weeder from Holly, Colorado took the money in round number three with a time of 2.34 seconds. The short go was won in 2.34 seconds also by Jessica Birdsong. But it

was Kenzie Andrus who won the average and claimed the Cactus saddle. Sunday morning brought many blessings as Rev. Roger Myers once again spoke at our Cowboy Church Service. Then 103 of the toughest 16-19 calf ropers got things underway when Chisum Thurston from Hyannis, Nebraska and Clay Kirkes from Lubbock, Texas, both turned in a time of 8.7 seconds. The second go was won by Andrew Yates with a time of 8.1 and Cody Doescher turned in the same time to win the third round. But, fast just got faster when Blake Ash blitzed his calf in the short go and won the fast time of 7.8 seconds. However, it was Clayton Shaw who took home that beautiful Cactus saddle when he cinched the Average in 38.5 seconds on three head. Once again producers, Chris Neal and Mark Holder, say a heartfelt “Thank You” to all the sponsors, suppliers, vendors, work crew and family members who include the timers, secretaries and arena personnel. Most of all though, they would like to thank the contestants and their families for their continued support of the Rising Stars Calf Roping. Hope the stars keep rising for you this next year. See you again in 2010! K

Did You Know? K USCRA now has a payout system for the 2010 cards. You can now pay $25 a weekend until you get the $100 membership fee paid off. If you only come one time during the season then that is all you pay, and you can start over the next season. You have to have your membership card purchased in full by August 1 to be eligible for the finals. K The enter twice system will only pertain to 1-head ropings for the remainder of the year. Any roping with more than one round will be enter once only.
K The ropings in Pueblo, Colorado, produced by Jr. Peek have included a bonus calf at each event. The Strad Energy $1,000 Bonus calf will award one roper, $1,000 at each roping. The Average winner of each roping will have a chance to come back and rope the fast time calf of that roping. ecently I heard the comment that the goals we set for the New Year are called resolutions because we intend to break them. Lately I’ve been talking about the importance of setting goals. We’ve started a new year and by now you’ve probably been knocked off the course of your goals a time or two and had a chance to throw your sucker in the dirt. Now the real test starts to see if you have what it takes to get back on the path and stay the course. Don’t let one mistake or less than perfect performance trash and tarnish the big picture. Keep your confidence high. It’s easy to have confidence if you’re someone like Brett Favre or Kobe Bryant. But the fact is we don’t all have that kind of capability. What’s really important is how you view yourself. Your vision and the way you view yourself is exactly what you will become. You must have confidence and be able to visualize yourself at the end of your goal. There is a Biblical principle that I use to reinforce my confidence. This principle is, you have to speak it for it to be.
Stand up in front of a mirror and look at yourself. As crazy and as easy as it seems, say something like, “I’m a winner going somewhere to win.” Quote your goals to yourself. What works for me personally is that my faith and confidence are not in me, or my rope. Ultimately my rope is not my provider. God is my provider and my faith and hope are in Him. What I say is, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I’m not standing on what I can do; I’m standing on the promises of God, which is that I can do all things through Christ. If Christ is for me then who can be against me? When you speak your goals in front of a mirror something key happens. Not only are you looking at yourself, but you also hear yourself. The strongest words you’ll ever hear are the words you speak especially about yourself. Now you have framed yourself up for success. Let’s walk this out. Until next time, God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.
A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love. TM

Fast Back Ropes introduces four-strand calf rope, the Edge
Ariat introduces new boot to the Fatbaby family The Ranchybaby is an essential performance riding boot with full-grain leather foot and suede shaft, plus ProCrepe Light sole and Duratread heel for longer wear. We’re all getting back to basics, and this is a terrific all-around boot at a great price point ($99.95) for the New Year. See more details below, and low-res images attached.
Ariat’s New Ranchbaby!
After a year in development Fast Back Ropes is excited to make their new four-strand calf rope available February 1, 2010. This new rope, aptly named the Edge, is a white poly four-strand calf rope made from 100% American made texturized poly fiber. “The Edge is the four-strand companion to our popular threestrand calf rope, the Iron Silk, but with the four-strand characteristics that appeal to the four-strand ropers,” says Al Benson, Fast Back General Manager. This rope stays true in all weather conditions, is extremely durable and after they are broken in there is very little stretch. The Edge is a low maintenance rope that is smooth and quick with a lot of action. “I have roped over 100 calves with my new Edge,” says Jerome Schneeberger, “and the rope is still holding up and ready to use. I throw it on the ground in the barn, winter or summer, and when I’m ready to rope the next day I just put it on my saddle and go rope.” Tested and tweaked in all weather conditions by ropers of all levels during development, this new has been put to the test and passed with flying colors.

PreveNile Superior West Nile Protection for Your Horse PreveNile is an extraordinary combination of science and protection. The vaccine is like no other. It uses cutting-edge chimera technology to generate a powerful immune response in your horse. Protecting your horse against West Nile Virus is still very important and here are some reasons why: In 2005, there were 1,075 reported cases of equine WNV. 20-38% of unvaccinated horses diagnosed with WNV have to be euthanized every year. The disease remains a significant threat to the horse and vaccination against WNV should be part of every horse’s vaccination protocol along with other encephalitis vaccines like Eastern and Western. PreveNile - Superior West Nile Protection for Your Horse Safe 99.9% reaction-free in field safety trials. Safe for use in foals 4 months of age or older. Effective In a challenge study, 100% of vaccinated horses were protected from fever and the presence of virus (viremia) in the bloodstream – and 95% were protected from clinical signs of WNV disease. Long-Lasting Full 12 months duration of immunity in yearlings or older horses vaccinated with a single dose. Single Dose One dose is all that’s needed for primary immunizations. Single dose for horses previously administered other West Nile vaccines. Most Comprehensive Label Other WNV vaccines aid in the prevention of viremia; PreveNile prevents viremia, and aids in the prevention of disease and encephalitis caused by West Nile Virus infection. The Spirit vs. the Soul

eb 4:12 “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” A concept that many people find hard to understand is the difference between a P/U W CH VSA the IN Spirit HOUSE of PROOF man, the soul of a man and the body of a man. We all understand the body because that is the tangible house that our Spirit and soul live in. The soul of a man makes up the mind, the will and the emotions. and Eve sinned in the garden. The spirit of a person is the part of an individual that the Holy Spirit of God possesses when He is invited into our life. 1Cor. 6:19 “Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own, you were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own]. So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body.” For those who have made a commitment to serve God and allow Him to call the shots in their life, there is a continual battle that is fought between the Spirit and the soul. A Wise man put it this way one time, “It’s like a good dog and a bad dog that are continually fighting inside of me.” When the question was asked, “Which dog generally wins?” The man replied, “The dog that I say sic’em to.” The reason so many people continually give into the flesh CRX’D is because they have never understood that submitting to God will bring peace, joy, contentment and happiness that we can never achieve by submitting to that sinful, selfish nature that God calls sin. I had a horse one time that regardless of how good I was to him, or how well I trained him, or how much time I invested into him, he had made up his mind, that no matter what, he would not submit himself to the master. Consequently, I got bucked off a lot. I don’t have to tell you what happened to that horse. To my knowledge, he never would submit to the blessings that his owners would have loved to give him. If you consider yourself a rebel, like my horse, then you have made up your mind that you don’t need God. You don’t need anybody for direction in your life. Then please don’t expect alcohol, illicit sex, or the abuse of people in your circle of friends to fill the void in your life that God has built into your body for His inhabitance. Only He can satisfy. Only He can bring significance, and ultimately, only He can bring true success to a life that He created to serve Him. My challenge to you is to pursue your personal relationship with God like you would pursue the most valuable treasure this world would ever have to offer. The gift is yours and the choice is yours. F
ebruary is here! I can tell by the cold temperatures, blowing snowflakes and the fact I can no longer see the Sandia Mountains out my window this morning. Yep, winter is still here and I don’t know about you, but the whole global warming thing has been far from my thoughts over the past couple of weeks — Man, I can’t wait until it warms up! To say the least, I have cabin fever. I get it every year about this time. I want to get out and get things done, but the cold, wind, rain and snow seem to be keeping me inside. I don’t think I am the only one who feels like this and this is the time of year that is really tough on ropings. Producers have no way of knowing if the weather will be good when they plan an event months in advance; ropers have a hard time keeping their horses tuned up and ready to go when they may not have a chance to ride them on a regular basis; and no doubt, with the passing of Christmas and the coming of tax time, the thought of spending any money is a hard decision. That makes this time of year very hard on any type of rodeo or roping production. However, this is also the time of year that many producers come up with some great incentives by thinking outside the box. The USCRA and its producers have always been on the cutting edge of new ideas about calf roping and if you peek inside this month’s
issue you can see a few things producers are doing to entice ropers to come out and play a bit. First off, the growing negative economic impact on Americans has the USCRA selecting a new avenue for a couple of events. This new format will include lighter fees and less stock charge taken out to allow ropers to continue to enjoy the events they always have in the past without hitting their pocketbooks so hard. Looking at the events produced by Jr. Peek held in Pueblo, ropers will have a shot at winning an additional $1,000 a weekend. With the help of a series sponsor, Strand Energy, a $1,000 bonus calf will be awarded at each event. Ropers in each division will have a chance to rope the fast time calf of that roping. The roper from any division who comes the closest to the fast time or beats it the fastest, will win the $1,000 bonus. Look at this month’s schedule and notice some of the other incentives producers are coming up with. Series awards, new formats, different venues, these things are going on to make your roping experience even better. I mean, if you look at the whole picture, very few of today’s ropers make a living at the sport and allowing ways for them to continue to compete and enjoy the sport without spending gobs of money is a way to grow the sport and keep it fun for all. Until next time – God Bless Ryan Davis

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.
