Peek Is The World Champion! Colorado’s Josh Peek Finally Gets the Gold Buckle!
A
dversity doesn’t stop Josh Peek of Pueblo, Colorado. It never has. A year ago, Peek was leading the Wrangler Timed Event Championship of the World at the Lazy E Arena with one run left. He took a 60-second time in the steer roping, the equivalent of a no-time at the WTEC, and dropped to a fourth place finish. On Sunday he was again leading the Average with one run remaining. This time, the 30-year-old tied his steer down in 18.4 seconds to clinch the title of 2010 Wrangler Timed Event Champion of the World with 15.2 on 25 runs. He is the 11th man to win the title in the 26 years of the WTEC. In addition to winning $50,000 for the Average, Peek, the twotime PRCA Reserve All-Around World Champion, placed twice in the fast rounds and exited the Lazy E Arena this weekend with $58,000. “I was more prepared this year,” he said. “Before I got here, I believed I was going to win.” Again, he’s faced adversity before. When Peek was 9 years
old an old nail pierced the skin of his right foot. In a lot of cases, the story might have ended with a tetanus shot. But Peek had stepped on this nail while in a pig pen. The child would undergo four surgeries, almost lose his foot and spend about a month in the hospital. In that span he would be given some antibiotics and that’s what he’s told induced epilepsy. That didn’t stop him. “Without
Josh Peek’s total of 315.2 seconds on 25 head of cattle over 5 go-rounds of competition, earned him the championships and $50,000
adversity, you’ll never achieve success,” he said Sunday. “There will always be road bumps and you’ll need the Lord and your family, but you also have to believe in yourself.” The WTEC annually takes 20 of the world’s toughest cowboys to battle the clock and tests their talents in a marathon of team roping - heading and heeling, tiedown roping, steer wrestling and steer roping over five rounds for a share of a $150,000 total purse. Peek went to the lead in the third round on the 14th run of the weekend. However, on the 19th run a fast running draw led to a 27.5 in the steer wrestling. He would end the fourth go in second place. In the fifth round, Peek dropped to third. The team roping-heeling shuffled the deck as K.C. Jones of Burlington, Wyo., a four-time WTEC Champion, dropped to third. Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, the six-time WTEC Champion, moved to the lead in the Average and Peek went to second after 23 head. In the steer wrestling, Brazile had a tough steer, suffering a 60-second time. So, Peek tossed his draw in 4.1 seconds for 296.8 on 24 and
the lead, with one run remaining. Jones was second. In the steer roping, Jones was 18seconds for 343.0 on 25. Peek needed to be 46.1 for the win and was 18.4. Jones finished second in the Average for $25,000, while Jo Jo Lemond was third at 358.3 seconds for $15,000. Brazile claimed fourth with 364.9 for $10,000 and fifth was Chance Kelton of Mayer, Ariz., 367.6 for $7,500. Kelton also had the fastest round with 48 seconds in the second go for an additional $10,000. Not long into Sunday’s action, fans witnessed something never before done at the WTEC. Jo Jo LeMond of Andrews, Texas, along with the assistance of World Champion Randon Adams, shattered the WTEC team roping heading record with a 4.5-second run. The previous record was a 5.1-second run by B.J. Campbell in 2002. LeMond also holds the WTEC team roping-heeling record with a 4.9-second effort with Matt Sherwood in 2009. The Ironman event of ProRodeo returned to the fabulous Lazy E Arena this weekend in
Guthrie, Oklahoma. For over two and a half decades, this one-of-akind event has showcased world champions and a cast of ProRodeo’s most elite cowboys competing in the most unique event in rodeo – the WTEC. New in 2010, the Wrangler Timed Event Championship will be aired as a special on RFD-TV’s “Beyond Rodeo Show with Susie Dobbs.” The WTEC is proud to be partners with “Beyond Rodeo” and RFDTV. Original air dates for the 2010 WTEC will be Wednesday, April 29 at 12:30 p.m. Central and 10:30 p.m. Central. Be sure and tune into RFD-TV and catch the action of this year’s WTEC event! Also new this year, the Lazy E was proud to have the WTEC broadcast live on numerous radio stations across the country and on the web at ProRodeoLive.com. As always, fans can also re-live all the runs at the WTEC on DVD by ordering the entire show from Rodeo Video – don’t miss a run of your favorite LOOPS MAGAZINE • 7

Trevor Brazile Chooses Twister Trailers
Trevor Brazile knows what works. An eleven time World Champion, and tied for the most All-Around Cowboy titles (7), his attention to detail in the rodeo arena is matched only by his discerning taste in the equipment it takes to keep his horses and his program on the path to success. On the road
more than not, Trevor Brazile needs a trailer that is not only a home away from home for him and his family, but safe and comfortable for his horses, high quality, low maintenance, and trustworthy. Looking stylish when you pull into the rodeo grounds doesn’t hurt either. That’s why when Trevor had a choice, he chose Twister Trailers. Trevor Brazile’s new Twister trailer features a walk-in rear tack room and a side load option for the horses, along with standard, superior quality features and attention to detail found on all Twister Trailers. Trevor also has other Twister Trailers on his ranch, including a one horse trailer that he uses for short trips. Trevor says “It’s the only trailer manufacturer that I’ve found that doesn’t cut any corners. They keep me on the road, because they are the best built trailer
in the industry.” What makes Twister the “best built trailer in the industry?” Using the highest quality materials available, Twister Trailer is proud to manufacture most of the components for their trailers, keeping quality control in-house. Innovative features are standard on a Twister Trailer; their professional staff enjoys helping customers develop solutions to their specific hauling challenges, whether that is creating a one horse trailer or hauling a stagecoach. Twister employees are horse people themselves, and they are always keeping convenience and your horses’ safety top of mind when developing new trailer features. Twister Trailers is the premier trailer company in the equine industry, offering built to order trailers to suit every horseman’s

he calf roping held in Muskogee, Oklahoma on March 14, 2010 at Hilltop Arena was considered a success by Mark Holder, producer of the A, B, C roping. The ropers that participated were not only happy with the calves but also showed their enthusiasm about the pay-off. Each of the three ropings were 3 rounds, a short go, and a bonus round which allowed the winners of each round, the winner of the short, and the winner of the average to rope for their entry fee back as bonus money. The A ropers kicked off the day with a 1st-Go win by Joe Teague in 10.72 and Shay Walters taking second with a 12.15. Dwain Strong won the 2nd-Go with an 11.47 and second went to Roy Creed with a 12.16. Joe Teague showed his skills again in the 3rd-Go roping his calf in a 12.31 and second going to Jack Harrell, with a 12.80. Each round paid $283 for first and $188 for second. The top five came back in the Short Go which paid $118 and was won by Steve Slack with a 12.69. The average went to Joe Teague with 56.62 on four head, paying him a check of $495 and second paying $330, was won by Steve Slack with a total of 58.22 on four. Joe Teague won the bonus round and was pleased with

I
’m less than a week off my win at Houston and I know lots of people are thinking, “Man, you won $50,000 in one run at Houston.” Well, yes and no. In reality you have to run six calves to get to that point. Then at the end four guys rope for first place. In a progressive set up like that my philosophy is to find out what you have to do to keep advancing and stay alive and then do that. Every stage has a sudden death where if you don’t qualify in the top four, you don’t advance. It’s very action packed with instant results compared to rodeos with first rounds that
can last two or three weeks. Though roping six calves sounds like a lot to get to the winner’s circle, really you just rope one calf at a time. I made the comment the other day that rodeoing is a marathon that is literally run 20 feet at a time. You may run 20 feet today and then it could be a week before you run the next 20 feet. Regardless, I want to be at the very top of my game for those 20 feet. This year I’ll run between 150 and 200 calves and each calf represents 20 feet. I want to be all in, all there, whether it’s for $500 or $50,000. My horse doesn’t know the

difference and I expect him to give his all every time. Why would I expect any less of myself? Ironically before Houston I had the least amount of money won at this time of year than I ever have. Now after Houston, I have the most money I’ve won at this time of year. From the beginning of the year, somehow, I just knew it was going to happen. I was riding around the arena before the rodeo started and thought, “Today could be a day I’ll never forget.” So I thought I should take it all in and enjoy it, which I did. I P/U W CH VSA spent some time praying. Honestly, I don’t pray to win but pray for the opportunity to win. I ask the Lord for a
chance and when that’s presented to me I do all I can to make the best of it. I would like to win all the rodeos I go to, but sometimes my best is not quite good enough and I accept that. I’m not satisfied, but I accept it. I know God works in all things and I’ve been at the very top and at the very bottom where the outlook is bleak. However it plays out I want to be the same guy whether I’m winning or not. I’ll be prepared and give it my best shot, but my life is complete and I’m content; though I’ll always do everything possible IN HOUSE PROOF to run the best 20 feet ICRX’D can.

God’s Surprises
I
n the book of Matthew, the Bible says we should treat others the way we want to be treated. A couple of years ago, I was in a hurry so I ran into the pen to catch my boy’s horse. Now you have to understand that Buster doesn’t like surprises. He’s never liked surprises. As I went into his pen, I walked up to him real fast with a halter and he ran off. It just so happened that my girl’s pet goat, Buddy, was in the pen with Buster. Buster got so scared that he began to run and he ran right over Buddy. He didn’t know what he had done because he’d allowed fear to be his focus instead of his little friend. So many times we run through life not regarding the people that God has so graciously placed in our paths. There is an old song that says we always hurt
the ones we love the most. That, my friend, is not God’s way. Our family and the people that we come in contact with every day should be respected. They shouldn’t be run over because of our fears, insecurities and general ignorance of their expectations. Sometimes, God’s “surprises” are our greatest blessings. My prayer for you and for me is that we not be like Buster, but that we recognize the greatest blessings that God has given us – our friends and family. “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you….” Matthew 7:12 Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 1627 Eva. ooking outside my window today, you would never guess it is springtime. Snowflakes are falling and dark clouds fill the sky. However, a few days ago I was sweating in a tee-shirt while doing some work outside and I am sure by tomorrow morning, the sun will be back out. What a strange time of year, but one I welcome because I know summer is just around the corner. Wow! What about Stran Smith taking the win at RodeoHouston! After winning the World Championships in 2008 Smith had a tough year in 2009 breaking a streak of WNFR qualifications. However, Smith came back with a vengeance. Last month I was wondering if his slow streak would continue, but as I can see now, Smith is back in the middle of the mix. You have to dig deep to keep competing when things are tough and Stran, my hat is off to you. His 8.5-second run in the championship round against Fred Whitfield, Clint Robinson and Trevor Brazile was smoking hot, not only earning him a $50,000 paycheck, but a lead in the World Standings and pretty much a guaranteed trip to Las Vegas this December. Again – Congrats! What about Peek and his win at the Wrangler Timed Event Championship this year. Peek has shown his potential in the All-Around arena over the past few years, I just wish he would pick it up a bit more. Maybe find a solid team roping partner and hit the trail with all of his talents to make a bid for the All-Around title. Not taking anything away from Brazile, but wouldn’t it be cool to see a battle between several guys gunning for the AllAround title each year? Before I wrap things up this month, I would like to let you all know that Loops is now online. Go to www.westernsportspublishing.com and find past issues of Loops, as well as the current issue. You can also pick up a subscription if you need to, or buy one for a friend. While there, you can also check out Western Sports’ other publications which can be viewed online as well.

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.
