W

ow, the First Annual Joe Beaver Jr. Superstars Roping was a great success. Just like the multi world champion host himself, the event showed signs of perfection with quality staff, great venue, great cattle and just an overwhelmingly awesome sense about it. The April 1-4 event held at the Wildfire Arena in Salado, Texas offered a unique and truly professional event that is sure to grow for year to come. Maybe it was the 370 contestants that made up 1,250 runs in 3 days, the awesome prizes handed out to winners, or just the chance to compete, win and enjoy the sport that made the event so successful, but ask anyone who was there and you can be sure they have already made plans to return next year. Everyone loved the program making a tribute to some past Jr. Roping Champions, as well as all the great sponsors. The professional help of so many made the event run off quickly, allowing everyone a chance to relax, enjoy the event and be prepared and rested, ready to compete. In addition to the formats that allowed many ways for contestants to compete and win, the event hosted a reunion roping on Thursday opening up the entries to past students of both Joe and Walter. This unique format was a blast and everyone enjoyed the competition. For years both Joe and Walter have been dedicated to helping others achieve their calf roping goals and this event solidifies their achievement with so many returning to compete and even winning part of the great event.

Benefit Roping for Boo Fullbright

T

welve-year-old Boo (Lil Dale) Fullbright must be very grateful for the benefit roping held in his honor on Saturday, March 27, 2010. After being shot accidentally Boo is in need of therapy and plans to work hard to recuperate as quickly as possible so he can continue what he loves, roping calves. He is a good little calf roper and with the financial help provided by the ropers that attended Saturday’s roping he will have the help he needs to continue his therapy. After being postponed because of the previous weekend of snow and ice, the weather was windy by nice and the ropers enjoyed participating to help out Boo and his family. Bob-bo Foster produced the event which included a silent auction, Ladies Breakaway roping, 12 & Under Breakaway roping, EE, OO, 1 and 2 combined and an Open calf roping. There were 13 Ladies Break-away ropers, 10 in the 12 & Under Breakaway, 14 EE ropers, 21 OO ropers, 27 in the 1 and 2 combined roping, and 24 Open ropers. Fans also enjoyed watching an exciting match between Blake Deckard and Steve Brickey. Each roper put up $500

and after roping six head Steve came from behind to win the match with an average of 61.58. Deckard wasn’t far behind with a 62.67 on six. What a match! Mark Holder provided the calves for the event which were complimented by all the ropers. Bob-bo would like to thank everyone that attended the benefit and helped with the auction and jackpot. Without all the donated items and labor it would not have been as successful. Good luck to Boo and his family and best wishes for a quick recovery.

ie-down roper Trent Creager, who hails from Stillwater, Oklahoma, worked his way through a field of great tie-down ropers including eight past Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers to secure the win at this year's Dodge National Circuit Finals held in Pocatello, Idaho. His run of 7.8 seconds in the Finals beat out ropers, J.C. Malone of Utah, Wes Lockard of California and home-state favorite Matt Shiozawa. The calf roping was hot from the start with Matt Kenney of Iowa setting the pace in the first round. He won the round with a

time of 7.8 seconds. You had to make a run under 9 seconds to earn any of the top six money spots in the round. Creager claimed the final sixth position setting up his run for the championship. Wes Lockard came out gunning in the second round, taking the win with a 7.7 second run. Again Creager claimed the sixth position and the final money slot in the round with a run of 9.3 seconds. Creager had two solid times, but was tied with the second round winner, Lockard, as they headed towards the Semi-Final round. By the time Creager roped in the Semifinals, 2008 DNCFR champion Matt Shiozawa of nearby Chubbuck, Idaho, had already tied his two-year-old arena record with a 7.3 second run. Creager backed off and settled for a solid run of 8.9 seconds to assure his place in the Finals The top four ropers coming out of the Semi-Finals took aim at the overall 2010 DNCFR championship. When the dust

settled, it was a battle between two cowboys. Shiozawa posted a no time while gunning for the win and Lockard finished with a 17.6-second run, pushing the barrier just a little too much in the big round. Trent Creager bested J.C. Malone’s time by almost a full second to secure the win. Creager roped his final calf in 7.8 seconds and Malone roped and tied his in 8.7 seconds to claim the runner-up position. The DNCFR is a great place to see the hot handed talents of many of the world's greatest rodeo competitors who may not be in the spotlight all of the time. The PRCA’s circuits allows these competitors a chance to compete and enjoy the sport while staying closer to their homes, where they can keep a steady job, stay close to their families or maintain ranches. Once a year these top competitors head to Idaho to compete for a title that they can be very proud of. Congratulations to Creager for an outstanding job at this years DNCFR.

The Brazile Watch Courtesy of PRCA Despite a frustrating weekend at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, Trevor Brazile remains in reach of breaking his own all-around cowboy record for surpassing $100,000 in earnings at the earliest point in the season. With his $741 in tie-down roping money at Red Bluff, Brazile has total all-around earnings of $91,553 and he has rodeos at Clovis, California, and Lufkin, Texas, to get him the $8,447 he needs to hit six figures. Brazile surpassed $100,000 in season earnings in Tulsa, Oklahoma, P/U Wthat CH VSA on May 14, 2006, the earliest any all-around cowboy has hit that milestone by a margin of five weeks (also Brazile, in 2008). A year ago, he reached April 20 with total earnings of $53,366. Brazile did manage to cut $232 off

Stran Smith’s lead in the tie-down roping world standings and is now just $1,250 out of first place. And for those eagle-eyed fans who notice that Brazile’s total earnings in team roping, tie-down roping and steer roping come to $368 more than his all-around total – it is not a mistake. Brazile, limited to 70 all-around rodeos in his season count, as opposed to 100 in tie-down roping, opted to unofficial the all-around at Henderson, Texas, where he won, that’s right, $368 in the tie-down roping.

o you see yourself as a grasshopper? In the Bible verse Numbers 13:33 Moses had sent twelve spies into the Promised Land to look at it. Two of them came back and said, “That’s our land.” The other ten said, “We were as grasshoppers in their sight.” My question is how do you see yourself? Yesterday I was in Los Angeles waiting to catch a flight. I started into a Denny’s to eat breakfast when a bum rode up to me on his bicycle and asked me for money. I told him I didn’t have any cash but invited him to eat breakfast with me. During breakfast I learned that Curtis is

50 years old and has been out of prison for four years. He was locked up for 25 years after being convicted of murder. Curtis had been a gang leader, a drug dealer and had killed many people. I asked about his family and he said he had a few kids, a mother and grandmother scattered in different states. I told him, “You must have someone in your family who has spent a lot of time praying for you.” He said he did and that he believes in God. One of his sons followed in his footsteps in the gang life and was killed. Curtis had a slang quote that pretty much summed

things up for him, “It is what it is. During our meal Curtis became polite, quiet spoken and it was obvious that he was very intelligent. After we parted company, I began to wonder if Curtis knew that what he was doing would determine what he would eventually have or be. It also made me look at my life and think about how I view myself. Because that’s where it really starts – with your self-image. If I look in the mirror and don’t like what I see then I need to change my environment. Do I see myself as a guy who comes through in the short round or do I see myself as someone who can’t possibly tie a calf in seven seconds when needed? No, I view myself as the guy that can get the job done, whatever that job may be. How I see myself in everyday life is just as or more important. How well do I handle things? Do I snap at people? Am I quick to be ill, to judge or to be mad about little things? If I see that, then I need to change that picture, not just change the way I think about it. It’s like looking in the mirror and then deciding to get in shape. If you change your diet and work out eventually your image in the mirror will change. Making change physically or spiritually is always possible. It just takes work, time and the knowledge that it won’t happen overnight.

Running With Horses

T

here is an interesting verse in Jeremiah that brings a question from God; I thought it might be an interesting question to ask you today. Jer 12:5 “If you have run with the footmen, and they have wearied you, then how can you contend with horses? And if in the land of peace, in which you trusted, they wearied you, then how will you do in the floodplain of the Jordan?” A few years back in an indoor arena in the middle of winter during a practice session of calf roping, a friend of mine commented to another friend that his horse was so slow he could outrun him on foot! Well, the challenge turned into a considerable amount of money being gambled on the abilities of the man and the horse in the race. To make a long story short, the man did out run the horse in a short distance race. I have to admit that I wasn’t surprised because the horse was pretty slow. In Jeremiah’s case the point is that when they were in relative peace, and had many needs and wants met, they continued to test God’s patience with worry, complaints, and disobedience. I believe the United States of America is still the greatest nation in the world. However, I also believe that the coming years will become increasingly challenging because of the lack of wisdom, and lack of stewardship of debt to foreign countries. This will eventually allow our world to move toward a one world order and monetary system prophesied in the Bible. Listen to what has been passed by our elected officials in the new Health Care Bill, H.R. 3200. Please understand this is NOT a political statement, it is a revelation of the times we live in and a challenge to pay attention to, not only our country but also the prophetic words of Scripture. The new health care bill provides for implanting a RFID microchip, to be implemented 36 months after the Bill was signed into law. The microchip [now an option] – when fully implemented – will provide the “framework” for making the United States the first nation in the world to require it’s citizens to have

24 • MAY 2010

implanted in them a radio-frequency identification (RFID) microchip for the purpose of controlling who is, or isn’t, allowed medical care in their country. You can check it out for yourself and draw your own conclusion. Healthcare Bill H.R. http://waysandmeans.house.gov/media/pdf/111/AAH CA09001xml.pdf • Pages 1001-1008 “National Medical Device Registry” section. • Page 1006 “to be enacted within 36 months upon passage” • Page 503 “… medical device surveillance http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Medical.../ ucm072191.pdf” WE MUST NOT NEGLECT THE PROPHETIC WORDS GOD HAS WRITTEN TO OUR NATION, AND THE WORD OF REVELATION TO THE WORLD CONCERNING THE END TIME. This is not an attempt to cause fear or even to incite political action. LISTEN TO THE WORD CONCERNING THE TIME THE BIBLE CALLS THE TRIBULATION: Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: Rev 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. If we have problems prioritizing our relationship with God when times are relatively peaceful, running with the horses may not be an option when times truly get tough. lue skies, warmer temperatures and wind – It must be spring! And with that comes a whole lot of work. The backyard grass needs mowing, then there’s the annual spring cleanup around the house that needs to happen, not to mention little league practice and weekly games for two of my boys and time to get them and myself in the saddle as much as possible – all of this adds up to a whole lot to do. Sometimes, it seems like I am running as hard as I can just to get everything done that needs doing and I seldom find time for myself. This past weekend I let all of the running and gunning get to me and I got stuck in a rut I think many of us find ourselves in every once in a while. I started thinking about all of the negatives in my life. I started feeling sorry for myself and began taking it out on those who love me. I must say, negativity can sure blur all that is good in a person’s life, in a hurry. Thanks to my beautiful wife, I cleared my mind and I’m back on track. I am back to being me and remembering that all that is good is usually right in front of me. I went back to doing something I did a little over a year ago after reading about making positive changes in your life. Every

morning, just after I wake up, I think of five positive things in my life. It may be things I am looking forward to, things that have already happened or just the thoughts of my family that I add to the daily collection of positive thoughts. I have to say, doing this each morning makes a huge difference. I did this for a long time, but for some reason quit. Looking back, I am not sure why I quit. I believe it may have become redundant and I got tired of it. But now that I know that, I know I will have to continue to keep it fresh with new positive aspects of life each and every day. I hope you all do the same. I believe keeping things positive in life is key to being successful. I know people are different and some may have to do more than others in this area. But I know that seeing the good in things rather than the negative can make the difference in everything. From making a solid 8-second run to enjoying your family and friends to the fullest, making each day special with positive thoughts is one way to make it all happen! Until next time, I hope all goes your way! Ryan Davis
