THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate. 2010 Joes Boot Shop Calf Roping Make No Mistake!
man Ariat Pro Match, held in conjunction with the Arait Open. The event featured three preliminary rounds in which the top ropers with the longest times were eliminated. Smith and Jerome Schneeberger went out in Round 1, while Monty Lewis and Blair Burk saw barrier violations take them out in Round 2. Josh Peek missed in Round 3, while J.D. Kibbe’s 10.34 – which included having to get the calf up before the flank – was too long. Jarrett, at 8.88 and Herrin, with a 8.59, moved on. In the two-head final round, Jarrett set the pace with an 8.03 on his first, while Herrin was quick as well in 8.59. Herrin came back with an 8.65 on his final calf, but a barrier added 10 seconds. Jarrett took his time with an 11.75 on the final run and collected top money of $3,500. Herrin receive $1,500 for second. On nine runs on his long final day – five in the match and four in the Open – Jarrett averaged a near-flawless 9.53 seconds per run. Round by Round Results
Ryan Jarrett left no room for error. And when Stran Smith made one, Jarrett was there to collect.
J
arrett, a native of Summerville, Gergia, was rock solid from start to finish in winning the 6th annual Joe’s Boot Shop Ariat Open calf roping here April 25. 2010 at the Curry County Events Center. Jarrett’s time of 37.88 on four returned him $5,355 and ironically, a signature “Stran Smith Ultimate” roping saddle from Cactus Saddlery, valued at $5,000. Jarrett’s victory brought an end to yet another record-setting weekend in what has become one of the largest calf roping’s in the U.S. The JBS saw 886 ropers compete for in excess of $250,000 in cash and prizes over four days. The Ariat Open victory came on a day in which Jarrett also won the JBS Ariat eightman professional match roping, averaging 9.57 on five runs. With his winnings in the match, and in the rounds and the average of the Open, Jarrett picked up more than $13,000 in cash – plus the saddle. Smith, who was the fastest on three head and was the last roper to compete in the championship round of the Ariat Open, finished as the reserve champion of the JBS for the second-straight year. Smith roped four in 39.88 and collected $4,284 in the average. But for one mistake on his final run, he might have won the Cactus saddle that bears his name. Smith, the 2008 world champion from Childress, TX, was 27.92 on his first three calves, leaving him last to rope in the 12-man short round. And as the four ropers who preceded him made their final runs, each raised the bar. Chase Williams, a Tarleton State 6 • JUNE 2010
University standout who came back in the fifth position, drew a runner, but managed to make up time on the ground and moved to the lead. Hunter Herrin, the 2007 JBS champion from Apache, OK, made his bid for the title with the best run of the short round – an 8.69. Tyson Durfey, the Colbert, WA native who led the event after two rounds, came back in the No. 3 position needing an 11.52 to take the lead. He roped his calf deep around the midsection, but managed to flank and tie him in 11.19, moving to first. Then came Jarrett, who was back in the No. 2 spot needed an 11.81 to move past Durfey. Jarrett also drew a hard runner, but reached, roped and still managed to keep the calf upright and he went down the rope. When he reached the calf, the bovine made a big jump and Jarrett gathered him in mid-air without hesitation and tied him in 9.38. Jarrett’s run left Smith needing a 9.95 to win the event as he rode into the box for the final run of the weekend. Smith was off the barrier on his final run and took an extra swing to rope the hard-running calf about halfway down the pen. He was still in excellent shape until he got the to calf and was slightly off balance as he flanked. He landed on one knee and though he recovered quickly, the calf strained during the tie. It was enough to push his time to 11.96 and dropped him behind Jarrett in the average. Herrin suffered a similar fate as he and Jarrett advanced to the finals of the eight-

Jared Eshleman of Melrose in the Four-Man Local Match with a time of 3:32.20. Payton Terry of Portales was second with 3:40.61. The match featured four ropers and 16 calves in the arena at once. Each roper was required to rope and tie four calves, then remount and ride back to the start line. Calves that did not remain tied resulted in a 20-second penalty. Klay Kirkes of Carlsbad and Dillon Lewis of Clovis also competed. Terry tied the first calf, while Eshleman was next. Kirkes, who lost a boot on his first one (and finished the match without it), managed to get his second calf tied before the other three. But Eshleman was right behind and he was first to tie the third. Terry, who was right behind with his third calf, suffered a setback when his tie didn’t hold. Terry strung his fourth calf first, while Eshleman was right behind. But Terry’s calf strained and he had to realign his string, giving Eshleman time to complete his fourth tie, remount, riding back across the line first. In addition to their winnings, each of the four received a unique leather jacket.

Calf Roping Ropes, Strings and Dummies 2010 Today’s calf ropers have better products and more practice equipment than ever before thanks to many forward-thinking companies who continue to manufacture products specifically for the sport. Of course ropes and strings are the backbone of the sport, but dummies rank pretty high. It’s not uncommon to see a calf roping dummy, whether its just a calf head stuck in a bale of hay or one of the new rope and tie type dummies, in the backyard,
Rattler Ropes Viper™First Five-Strand Calf Rope Rattler Ropes brings you the Viper, the first fivestrand calf rope with a core. What happens when five strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give, you won’t break this rope. And, like a viper, it’s the same every time…Deadly accurate. To feel it for yourself, go to www.classicropes.com and find a dealer in your area.

pasture or practice arena of a calf ropers home. Never before have calf ropers had a chance to practice on better equipment than now and in addition, never has the line-up of new ropes and strings been this dynamic for the sport. Take a look ahead at the new ropes, strings and dummies for 2010. You’ll find some old favorites, some improved products and some brand new ones you’ll definitely want to try out.
S/S Roping, which is owned by teenage brothers Casey and Colter Sellers, is a business the boys developed to sell their roping products, which enables them to earn money to rodeo and learn how to operate a successful business. Their latest invention, Tuf Kaf, will soon be on the market to calf ropers, from beginner to pro. The calf, which is made from a combination of rubber and foam, is anatomically correct, and has the right feel, size and look of a real live calf. The calf is mounted on a sled that can be pulled with an ATV or a horse. The calf is also designed to be used as a ground tool, and can be used in a basement, barn or building and mimics the actions of a real calf. The calf weighs around 60 pounds, but is the size and shape of a real live calf. The material is virtually indestructible, and you can sit on the calf without breaking it. The family hopes to have some Tuf Kafs available this summer. They plan to have it available for high school and college rodeo athletes, as well as amateur and professional calf ropers. The machine will be marketed through their website, internet locations and retail stores throughout the nation. For more information on Tuf Kaf, the Sellers can be reached by phone at 307-343-4444, or by email: ssroping@wyoming.com. Their website is: ssroping.com.

Fast Back Ropes Fast Back Ropes introduces four-strand calf rope, The Edge After a year in development Fast Back Ropes is excited to make their new four-strand calf rope available. This new rope, aptly named the Edge, is a white poly four-strand calf rope made from 100% American made texturized poly fiber. “The Edge is the four-strand companion to our popular three-
strand calf rope, the Iron Silk, but with the four-strand characteristics that appeal to the four-strand ropers,” says Al Benson, Fast Back General Manager. This rope stays true in all weather conditions, is extremely durable and after they are broken in there is very little stretch. The Edge is a low maintenance rope that is smooth and quick with a lot of action. “I have roped over 100 calves with my new Edge,” says Jerome Schneeberger, “and the rope is still holding up and ready to use. I throw it on the ground in the barn, winter or summer, and when I’m ready to rope the next day I just put it on my saddle and go rope.” Tested and tweaked in all weather conditions by ropers of all levels during development, this new rope has been put to the test and passed with flying colors.

Willard Ropes Syngrass Calf Rope This revolutionary new calf rope is made from a synthetic manila. It has very little stretch and has the look and feel of the polygrass which most calf ropers prefer. Sparky New Calf Tie Down Sparky has a new inexpensive way to train your horses and practice tie down roping. The new Sparky calf sled can be pulled behind a 4 wheeler or any type of pulling unit. You get the same practice as with live calves but not the livestock up keep and cost. The Sparky calf tie down will give your horse a jerk when it is roped and releases from the sled. You can run your rope, pick up the calf and tie it. The legs are spring loaded for gathering your legs. The front left leg has a loose hock joint to press straight for tying. The calf body is 75 lbs and it comes with a bladder to add weight for more body weight. Body and legs are made from plastic rubber material
that is flexible and very durable. Check us out at www.smartsteer.com or call us at 1-877-877-4240.
Cactus Ropes Destiny “4-Stran” Cactus Ropes worked with the 2008 World Champion, Stran Smith, to develop this ground breaking rope. The Destiny “for Stran” is the first four-strand rope of its kind to combine the feel of a grass rope with the durability and low maintenance of a poly. The Destiny 4 - “Stran” calf rope is 100% texturized poly. The development was to focus on smaller crowns to give a faster feel without losing the durability. The Destiny has virtually no stretch and maintains its body and lay run after run. • Sizes: 9.0, 9.5, 10.0, 10.25, 10.5, 10.75, 11.0 • Lays: Extra Soft, Soft • Length: 28’ • Horn Knots indicates rope size, included • Four-strand • 100% texturized poly • Smaller crowns Weapon Cactus Ropes worked had-in-hand with Trevor Brazile, 11-time PRCA World Champion, to develop this four-strand calf rope. The Weapon is a unique combination of texturized poly and high tenacity poly. Our process gives this rope the toughness and feel all ropers seek. It offers a smooth and balanced tip giving it a more distinct feel. • Sizes: 9.0, 9.5, 10.0, 10.25, 10.5, 10.75, 11.0 • Lays: Extra Soft, Soft • Length: 28’ • Color-coded tags to indicate rope size • Four-strand combination of high tenacity and texturized poly • Tough and durable s s
The RopingCalf From the owner of ReRun The RopingCalf Having roped competitively for years it seemed to me that a lot of money and effort was being spent obtaining and handling cattle. I felt ropers and horses could benefit if they spent more time roping and tying, than moving cattle back up the arena. A sour pen of calves can frustrate a horse and roper. When consistency counts you can bet the cattle won’t cooperate. The ReRun Roping Calf was designed to have fun. The horse gets the experience you want every run, and learns what you expect. He learns his job and gains the confidence needed to become great. • Pulled by ATV or Horse • Freestanding, for practice on the ground • Replaces live calves • All parts are easily replaceable
• Anyone can participate For more information, please go to www.RopingCalf.com or contact Frank Frodsham, Inventor at 888-451-2260.

Listen for yourself to what makes Rattler’s line of Racer™ strings a successful tool for professional calf ropers. By visiting the website, you can hear first hand from the pros about the most important points in a good calf string. Racer™ piggin strings are more than just a good feeling body. The eye of every string is constructed using a special process that results in an eye that will not turn. Racer eyes are the right size, and hand sewn with rawhide burners for speed and smoothness. Each string is treated with a specially formulated wax that penetrates into the string’s fibers. This creates the right balance and body to add speed to your tie. Strings are 100% nylon which results in a string that is fast, snappy and has a great feel. Visit www.rattlerrope.com/strings to learn more.
Industrial Liaison, Inc. Industrial Liaison, Inc. is the worldwide distributor of Ouzu
Cordage poly rope. Ouzu is manufactured in Japan, and Industrial Liaison is the exclusive source for all of the 3- and 4-strand high performance polypropylene rope used in the roping industry. Located in Idaho Falls, ID, Industrial imports the rope and then distributes to rope companies here in the US and other parts of the world. With the demise of the polygrass ropes, Industrial began working on a new type of synthetic rope with a new manufacturer in Southeast Asia. The result of this 2-year endeavor was the development of SYNGRASS Manila, a synthetic rope that looks and feels like a polygrass rope. This is the only product developed that even comes close to replicating the “feel” of a natural grass rope. Unlike all other calf ropes on the market, which are made of polyester, this rope is the only polypropylene rope that has an exact weighting system spun into the inside of the rope. This allows us to formulate a rope that has the exact feel and balance for the perfect throw every time, time after time. This rope will typically last as long as 3-4 polygrass ropes, and breakage is virtually non-existent. Since the introduction of the SYN-GRASS Manila rope, it has become the choice of tie-down ropers everywhere. With a natural look, smooth feel, balanced weight, and little to no stretch, this low maintenance rope is being used by many of today’s top cowboys, with winning results! SYN-GRASS is available in the following sizes: 63 thread10.75mm, 60 thread – 10.5mm, 57 thread – 10.25mm, 54 thread – 10.0mm, 51 thread – 9.5mm, 48 thread – 9.0mm For more information please contact one of the following SYNGRASS dealers, The Rope Shop in Idaho Falls, ID, Willard Rope Co. in Rockdale, TX, Callaway Rope Co. in Dublin, TX, Dub Grant Lariats, Benton, AR or King Ropes in Sheridan, WY

ften times when I’m driving down the road and see horses standing in the pasture I’ll wonder if they are missing out on the chance to be great. I’m certain there are many horses that are born to be great but go to waste because they were never trained. Those horses never had a say and thankfully that’s not the case with people. As a human you have the ultimate say in your success. There are many people who have been told, especially during their formative years, that they will never succeed. Their self-image has become what someone else told them. They become the label they have been given: loser, choker, dummy or whatever. It’s insecure bullies who usually hand out these labels. You can overcome this and choose not to let others claim your destiny. You are the only one who is in control of your destiny. Every day I see how impressionable and easily molded my boys are. Stone, my oldest, is very tenderhearted and a pleaser. With the right words and encouragement he will try
and do anything for me. My youngest is a little more like me. Tell him that he can’t do something and he will growl at you while he’s showing you that he can do it. These two boys have the same genetics, live in the same environment and yet they are totally different and will have to be encouraged differently. I never want to be a stumbling block for them, either from my success, my expectations or my lack of encouragement. I take everything I say and do around them very seriously. For all my efforts, they are the ones who will determine how successful they are in life. If they decide to rope, I can’t throw the rope for them. If they want to be President of the United States, I’m behind them but can’t do anything to help them. I encourage you to be successful and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Don’t let someone squelch your dreams – go chase those dreams down. Till next time, God Bless and I’ll see you down the line.
A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love. TM

It's All About Me
R
ecently one of those drive-by’s occurred in our family that makes my husband cringe. Parked in the front of the shopping center of our hometown was someone selling puppies. Not just any puppies, but Red Heeler puppies. In the end, Maggie was added to our family of three dogs. At our house we have aging dogs left over from children’s pleas of, “get me one and I promise I’ll take care of it.” They became a part of our family. Randy even says “come to daddy” to the smaller ones when he thinks no one is around. But now I want a dog of my own. Annie is our outside dog, a Corgi-Blue Heeler cross, with an attitude. From the day Annie came home to live with us 11 years ago she was opinionated and cross. Other dogs were not on her list of acceptable colleagues; whether they lived with us, were passing through, or happened to be in close proximity when we parked our truck and trailer. But now, Maggie is on
the scene. She was and is a little tank, square and thickly built, intelligent in her eyes, she listens and learns very quickly. But she has a quirk as most heelers do. She LOVES Annie. Under no circumstances since she came home as a sleepy little baby has she accepted Annie’s distain of her. If Annie is on the porch, she wants to be beside her. If Annie is eating she wants to share the bowl. If Annie is moving in any direction, Maggie is jumping on her, determined to make her play. The tortured “help me” look is clearly marked in Annie’s eyes as she runs for cover, snarling and biting. She even gave up her dog house in the coldest parts of the last winter just to keep Maggie from lying on top of her inside of it. The problem is not that Maggie is a pest, even though she is, it is that Annie’s world has always revolved around Annie. Even though we have tried to change her it seems to be a part of who she is. Ephesians 4:13 CEV says, “This will continue until we are united by our faith and by our understanding of the Son of God. Then we will be mature, just as Christ is, and we will be completely like him.” God did not create us to be selfish and self-focused, demanding our own way and snarling when we don’t get it. He created us to reflect the image of His Son, Jesus Christ, being completely like Him in who we are. Annie may never become a Christian in her attitude, but Maggie will never give up on her either. by Darla Weaver aka. une is here and that means the hot summer months are upon us and it is time to get out and enjoy the warm sunshine. The sport of calf roping looks good for the summer. The USCRA added a few events to their schedule and it looks like a whole slew of ropers claimed showdown and world standing positions this past month. Warmer weather always makes it nicer to get out and compete. On another note, with the Southwest being the political hotspot for the battle on immigration, I have to say I have had an ear turned that way ever since the Governor of Arizona P/U W CH VSA passed the state's recent immigration law to help combat their growing problem with illegal immigration. Now there are a whole lot of people who think the new law is unfair and
will boil down to racial profiling. For me, I have to call BS on that and believe a lot of it is either ignorance or politics. To begin, I believe good police officers are trained to profile for criminal behavior. If they pull someone over and suspect drinking or smell marijuana smoke, they can profile that person as being unlawful. That is no different than pulling someone over and finding that the driver or passengers cannot speak English. It does not take a genius to suspect that maybe they are in the country illegally. They IN That HOUSEbrings PROOF me to #2.CRX’D sneak across our borders. Why? Because it is illegal to be in the USA without proper identification or documents. So as soon as they step on U.S. soil they have broken a law. Now if I break a law, I am
punished, so shouldn’t they be punished also? Now, I have nothing against those who want to come to the U.S. to better themselves or their families as long as they do it lawfully. In addition, I think there is a place for these people in our communities and workforce. However, an open border spells disaster on so many different avenues and it should be the responsibility of the government to control it. I believe Arizona took what I think is the necessary step to help not only their state but the country as well in this area. I, for one, am not boycotting Arizona and I might even plan a little trip there in suport, later this fall, after the temperatures drop out of the 100’s! — Ryan Davis
