ven though the 2010 season is not over, the month of August starts all the buzz for the 2011 season. In fact, when you purchase a USCRA card after August 1, you are buying a 2011card with the benefit of the chance to go the 2010 USCRA Finals, a “Two for One” kind of deal. Naturally, if you buy a 2011 card you want to know what to expect for the 2011 season. The 2011 USCRA season is going to be a season full of excitement and changes. There are some great ropings already signed on like the Roland Reid Memorial at the Stockyards in Ft. Worth, the Spring Classic giving away Barnes saddles in all divisions, the Mo Betta held in Apache, Oklahoma, and the W.E.B Memorial, to name a few. The USCRA is very excited to have these great ropings on the calendar for the 2011 season. For the 2011 season, the USCRA wants to go back to having a few big ropings instead of a bunch of small ropings. As it looks right now, there will be 12 ropings, with 11 of these already scheduled. There will be some special events held with some of the more successful ropings, to be announced at a later date. The plan is to try and have more four- and five-head ropings. There are even plans to have an eight-header at the Calf Ropers Reunion in Bryan, Texas. The dates of these ropings have been coordinated with other big ropings, so that nobody has to miss any big ropings, whether it be a USCRA event, Joe’s Boot Shop roping, the Bubblegum Roping, or Barry Burk’s Jr. Roping. The USCRA is excited about it and hopes that the ropers are also. More changes and details will come out in next month’s magazine,

but I will leave you with a few of the changes. As far as the number system goes, the EE, 00, #1 and #2 will stay the same; however, there will no longer be a #3 or BBreakaway. The USCRA will be bringing back the Open Tiedown and the Open Breakaway. The #3’s will be grouped with the open and the breakaway ropers will all be grouped into one division. The open breakaway will also become a women’s only event. There will be no “World Finals” for the 2011 Season. The SemiFinals and the Showdown Finals will still be the showcase at the end of the season with a few minor changes. The 2011 season is looking to be one of the most exciting seasons in the 16-year history of the USCRA. However, we want to invite all calf ropers to not miss out on the 2010 Finals because after all, it is still the “Largest Calf Roping in the World.” All you have to do is come to the Labor Day weekend roping in Giddings, Texas and you are eligible for the 2010 and 2011 Finals. or the past 25 years jr. calf roping and breakaway roping competitors always look forward to one event. That event – the Roy Cooper Jr. World Championship Calf Roping. This year’s 26th Annual event was once again the highlight of the season for many of this country’s toughest young competitors who came out to see who is the best of the best and who will walk away with this year’s titles. The future superstars of the sport were present, shaking out loops, and making lightning fast runs to bid for their shot at the tremendous payout at the new North Texas Premier Equine Facility, Diamond T Arena in Denton, Texas. Roy Cooper’s World Championship Jr. Calf Roping is designed specifically for juniors and featured six different divisions of competition in this once-a-year event. The events included 12 & Under - Boys & Girls Breakaway, 12 & Under - Tie Down Roping, 13 to 15 - Girls Breakaway, 13 to 15 - Boys Tie Down Roping, 19 & Under - Girls Breakaway and the World Champion Jr. Calf Roping. The July 8-10 event not only hosted tons of talent inside the arena, but the flair of the event edged over

the fences to where the event producer, eight-time PRCA world champion and namesake of the event, Superlooper Roy Cooper was there to cheer on each contestant and witness the next heap of great talent in the sport. Each day started at 9 a.m. and consisted of both calf roping and breakaway action in five divisions that included three full go rounds and a top 10 short round that would eventually determine the champions on a total of 4-head of cattle. The big event of the weekend was the 19 and Under World Championship Jr. Calf Roping that played out on Saturday. This roping consisted of a 3-head roping with the top 16 back to Elimination Rounds where the two slowest ropers were eliminated in each round. The roping was nothing short of great and the end result gave title to the 2010 Roy Cooper’s World Championship Jr. Calf Roper - Reese Reimer! Reimer mounted the stage where many great calf ropers have stood and many more will stand in the

T

he other day I heard someone say, “One of these days, I’ll….” After some thought I later told my wife that “One of these days” is code for never. I realized that in the past I had occasionally said, “One of these days I’ll do a school in Hawaii and we’ll go there on vacation.” That’s a nice thought and something I’d really like to do for my family, but I have never taken any action on it. Well, that’s not exactly fair to my family, to give them false hope for something I mention casually. When you catch yourself saying, “One of these days...” stop and take a hard look at what you’re talking about. Is this something you really intend to do? How many times have you heard people say, “One of these days I’m going to start exercising,” or “One of these days I’m going to lose weight.” I don’t doubt their intentions, but there’s a big difference between dreaming and doing. Remember the old saying, “The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” It reminds me of the movie “The Bucket List.” Those two guys had a list of things they wanted to do before

they died – and waited until they were dying to start on the list. I would like to buy a Corvette and visit Hawaii. Well I don’t want to buy a Corvette or visit Hawaii when I’m 85 years old. Kids today are great procrastinators if allowed. As students how many say or think I’ll start studying and get serious about school when I get to high school, or college? They are developing life-long habits right now and there just won’t be a magical moment that comes along when they will suddenly be an exemplary student. That only comes with effort and hard work. What about ropers who say, “When I get a really nice horse I’ll take good care of him.” Why wouldn’t you take good care of any or all of your horses? It’s a personal choice to do the right thing. Congratulations to Matt Shiozawa for winning the $100,000 at Calgary. It was a very exciting finish where the final four guys roped and Matt and Fred Whitfield were both 7.4. They had to have a rope off

A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love. TM

Whitfield were both 7.4. They had to have a rope off and rope one calf for the $100,000. Matt tied his in 6.5-seconds. Fred would have to be 6.4 to beat him. It looked like he was going to get it done until his string popped up. It’s awesome to watch guys of that caliber rise to the occasion when the pressure is on. It made for good watching and my hat is off to both of them. All professional cowboys work very hard at what we do and what separates us from professional football or baseball players is that we have to win to get paid. That’s the nature of the beast of our sport. Congratulations Matt. Till next time, God Bless and I’ll see you down the line.

What Do I Have That Jesus Wants? “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love your neighbor as yourself.” Matt. 22:37-40

C

oncentration is a wonderful thing if our attention is focused on the right things in life. Have you ever had somebody that wanted to talk to you while you were watching your favorite television program? Even knowing that the topic of conversation was really important to the person who had just approached you, would your eye still have a tendency to drift back to the television program as they continued to talk to you? In life, it seems as though distractions can be

as much of an enemy to relationships as it is to any sporting event that you participate in. Whether you are talking to your spouse, roping a calf or catching a football, concentration always seems to be a vital key to success. In our relationships with people as well as with God, focused attention is essential to that relationship. Four out of the Ten Commandments deal with our relationship to God and the other six commandments deal with our relationships with people. If you want to know where your priorities are, just ask yourself this simple question — where do I spend most of my time and with whom or what? If the object of your affection or your number one priority is anything but God first, and people second, chances are really good that the focus of your attention is flawed. Jesus said the two greatest commandments are very simple: love God and love people. “For where your treasure is there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:21 Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 21627 Eva Street Montgomery, TX 77356 Church Service Times: Sundays – 8:30 am, 10 am, 11:30 am Mondays – 7:00 pm

I

just talked to a friend and he told me one of the funniest stories I have had heard in a long time. I won’t tell you the whole story, but it consisted of a day trip to an amusement park, bug spray, Benadryl, and a long day in the hot Texas sun. Least to say, I wish I could have been there to see it first-hand and if you get a chance to talk to Ben Clements, USTRC announcer and SuperLooper editor, ask him about it for a good laugh. It has been a while since I laughed at something so funny and I have to say it felt pretty good. Thanks Ben! Now on to the world of calf roping and WOW, what a month it has been. The USCRA hosted another great 4th of July event in Stephenville. Over $50,000 in cash paid out and great looking Tod Slone saddles awarded

made this one of the biggest of the year. For those who tune into the PRCA ranks, Brazile is at it again and the July 4th weekend was a good one for him. He pocketed over $24,000 at the cowboy Christmas events across the country. The winning gave him a huge lead in the All Around standings, however, Stran Smith is only about $10,000 behind him for the lead in the tie-down roping standings. I am sure this will be a great race till the end. Going back to the USCRA, I have to admit I had a little inside track on the new formats they will be hosting throughout 2011. Look back at last month’s column if you don’t remember. I gave a little preview and hopefully got calf ropers looking ahead to these types of larger events with bigger payouts and more prizes. I

still feel if the sport can grow, these are the types of events that will makeit happen. People winning larger payouts will attract more to the sport and that will spread across the country. The way I see it, the USCRA already has a great classification system that is honest and fair. Ropers will enjoy having a chance to rope for more money at these events. However, they will attend more smaller events to get tuned up for when the larger events come around. It really is a win-win for everyone. the leader The USCRA stands as HOUSE P/U W CH VSA up IN PROOFin the industry, hosting the best of the best, producers still get a chance to host local events where ropers can participate, win and get prepared for larger events and for the ropers there is a variety of events to attend.
