Brazile Watch Courtesy of PRCA With his secondplace finish in the steer roping at the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up, two-time World Champion Trevor Brazile moved ahead of Vin Fisher Jr. into second place in the world standings with $51,708. Brazile’s total earnings of $248,654 entering Omaha this week – where he is qualified in both team roping and tie-down roping – gives him what is close to an unassailable lead in the standings as he chases his record eighth all-around gold buckle. His lead over second-place Curtis Cassidy is more than $136,000, and none of the top three challengers – Cassidy, Ryan Jarrett or Josh Peek – is going to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in more than one event, while Brazile will make the postseason in all three of his events. Still, because there is $5.875 million in total prize money in Las Vegas, it is mathematically possible for Brazile to be denied. It just isn’t very likely. The maximum a competitor can win at the NFR (according to a prize money breakdown that will not get final approval until later this week), is $220,030. To do that, a cowboy would have to win all 10 rounds of his event and the average. The NFR record for prize money won in a single event is the $146,100 that Sherry Cervi earned in barrel racing last December. Assume for a moment that Brazile’s margin was roughly the same after Omaha; that would mean that even if the second place allaround hand set a record with $150,000 in earnings in his event at the NFR, he would win the gold buckle only if Brazile won less than $12,000 combined at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and the Wrangler NFR.
We know roping. We are giving it away! Farm and Ranch now offers an innovative, complete line of roping and arena equipment. From new solar power chutes to the quietest roping chutes available, we’ve got it all. We know as a roper you want versatility and independence. Tarter Farm and Ranch’s roping line gives you both. Electric Roping Chute w/Remote Headgate & Tailgate One of a kind in the industry, the electric headgate / tailgate unit features a remote operated headgate and tailgate. The versatility of this chute is like no other. The unit can be operated with 110V direct connected to the unit OR it can be operated without 110V, using its on-board battery and its solar charging panels. The headgate and tailgate, which have coordinated operation, not found on any other chute, requires only one small air cylinder to operate. You can direct connect your air source to the unit OR you can attach a bottle of compressed air to the unit. It will cycle 1000-1500 times on one small cylinder. This unit allows a roper to place the chute anywhere regardless of the availability of air and electric, as it can be fully selfsufficient anywhere. Overall, this unit provides an extremely easyto-use system for one person to operate from horseback, and provides versatility like no other unit on the market. Product available in East and West Regions. Ask for Tarter products by name at great farm and ranch stores everywhere.

A Quick Look back at 2010 T
hroughout the year, we get a chance to see a lot of great calf roping photos from several of the countries top rodeo photographers. These photos capture the greatness of calf roping. They give insight into the agility and performance of the calf horse, as well as the athleticism and focus of the ropers. All of us here at Loops Magazine figured our reader must enjoy great calf roping photos as well, so we thought we would give you a chance to see some of the photos that ran across the pages throughout the past year once again. We will go back to the 2009 WNFR and steal some of the action of that great event, as well as all of the others side by side in the next several pages. We hope you enjoy them all!

With Stran’s busy schedule winding down towards this year’s WNFR, we gave him a break from this month’s writing duties. We dug up an older one he wrote back in February 2008. We found it fitting as a great number of ropers kick off the 2011 USCRA season. WE would like to say that’s to Stran for insight into the sport that is a usable today as it was when it was first published!
A
t start of each year I like to evaluate my goals and priorities. I’ve heard that you have a seventy percent better chance of reaching goals when you write them down. This selfevaluation is an on-going process; but each new year I do some genuine soul searching, not just as a roper, but as a man. Keeping life balanced requires asking myself some pretty deep and tough questions: Will the world be a better place because I was
here? What will I be remembered for and what will be my legacy? Will it be for my roping, because I was in GQ magazine or for the posters and ads I’ve been in? What’s important to me is to be remembered as a good Christian man who set a good example for those I had influence over. What’s your passion? We all need to be passionate in whatever we’re doing in life. Are you going after your passion – or is it a daydream? It would be a tragedy for me to have my passion for roping and not get a chance to pursue it. I think there are many people without happiness because they’re caught up in the daily grind of life, trying to get by and are not true to their passion. I’m incredibly blessed to be successful at my passion. Has anything changed me or knocked me off course in pursuit of my goals. The most important
A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love. TM

thing to me is having a balance. For instance, what if I were the fastest man alive in the arena from the time my feet hit the ground until I threw my hands in the air. It wouldn’t be very beneficial if I couldn’t score and catch. I’d rather be well balanced in all areas. There would be little reward in being the best roper in the world and not have a family who loved you to share it with. How do you overcome adversity? Does it make you better or set you back. If you’re in a hole and someone throws dirt on you – do you use that dirt to take a step up – or do you let that dirt cover you up? Enjoy every stage of life and when you’re struggling embrace it and know you’ll be better from the challenge. You’ll not only survive but you’ll improve from the experience. Find your weak spots and work on it. Acknowledge and attack it and turn it into a positive. Who are you allowing to speak into your life? Who and what are you listening to? Are they speaking good and positive things or are they speaking deadly negatives? God will put everyone in your life that needs to be there, but it’s our responsibility to put them in the right place. I have no room for negatives because what you take in will come out. I ask myself if the people I’m allowing to speak in my life are telling me the things I need to hear to get where I need to go. Have I told the people who influence my life how much I love and appreciate them? If these questions seem thought provoking and deep, it’s because they’re supposed to be. Most importantly, just be real. God bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

Seed Sowing Principles eeds sown are seeds that are grown. Depending on when, where, or how, you sow seeds in your life, the reaping of those same seeds is a law that God has put in our world from the beginning of time. We always find time to do the things that are important to us. In the process of sowing seeds, we make decisions and choices concerning what is really important to us. In many people’s lives, priorities are what determine the investment of a seed. That being relationships with our spouse, our children, extended family, and friends. If your marriage is important to you, your priority according to scripture should be to seek God first, and He will help you to be a good spouse. The same applies to being a good father, mother, grandparent, friend, even employee. Matthew 6:33 says “seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” I was at a roping last night, and I made the statement ‘that calf didn’t run as hard as I thought he was going to’, consequently, I broke the barrier. The truth of the matter is that the calf was just being a calf and I was being the one that had messed up by miscalculating. Too many times we blame others, friends, family, sometimes even animals for our lack of discipline in sowing good seeds, whether in the practice pen, in our family, as well as with our job. When we realize that all wisdom comes from above, we will understand the value of sowing good seeds. In order for a seed to grow you must be willing to put that seed in the ground and turn lose of it with your hand. Too many times, we are unwilling to turn lose of the seed, or we will want to dig that seed back up, just to see what is going on. Faith will assure us that God is in control and that we will reap the crop that we have sown if we will be faithful to Him.

T
his month looks to be a turning point for the USCRA. The 2011 season is underway and ropers everywhere are gearing up for the change the association is offering. Look back a few pages and see the advertising on the first two events the USCRA is part of this year. The Roland Reid Memorial will be the first of many events ropers will have a chance to attend throughout this season. This event, which will play out in Fort Worth at the Cowtown P/U Coliseum W CH VSA will not only offer a high payout format with thousands of dollars added, but there will also be a 1-horse trailer awarded to the High-Point roper of the weekend, not to mention a chance to be part
of a great annual memorial event. The Roland Reid Memorial will kick off the first weekend of November and in December, the USCRA is heading to Stephenville and the Lonestar arena for the second of this year’s events. The USCRA Christmas Bonus Roping will have lots of ways for ropers to win part of the huge pot of bonus money. There will be bonus calves to rope, multiple Average bonuses, high money bonuses, fast time bonus challenges and lots more. The December 10-12 IN HOUSE PROOF CRX’D roping will host a slew of ways for ropers to fill their pockets and have a great time doing it. These are only the first two events of the season and the USCRA looks to be holding
nothing back. They both have unique qualities and ways to make them fun and exciting. More importantly, they are filled with ways to win! Looking at these events makes me think of a man that passed this past year who was instrumental in the growth of team roping. Not everyone agreed with the formats and pizzazz that Booger Barter brought to the arena, but his almost circus atmosphere and great prize ropings made him a superstar. I believe this is sort of the same avenue the USCRA is bringing out. Maybe not to the extreme that Booger did – Thank God – but the excitement, big payouts and fun is something I believe every event, whether it’s calf roping, team roping or anything type of rodeo sport needs and what the USCRA is bringing to the table for the 2011 season. Until next time – I wish you all the best of luck! — Ryan Davis

THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate. Follow TheClassicRealDeal on:
