Big Time at

2010 National Finals

T

he cowboy capital of the world, Stephenville, Texas once again took center stage for the sport of Calf Roping as the 2010 USCRA National Finals took place on September 16-19. Calf ropers, breakaway ropers and fans came together for this once a year event that proved yet again the sport is alive and well. The competition was fierce as ropers battled it out in the SemiFinals, Showdown Finals, and the USCRA World Finals events throughout the weekend, all bidding for their share of the huge cash and prize payout. This year’s total payout including cash and prizes was over $100,000! Close to 750 entries filled the event, all with hopes of taking home part of the payout in cash, as well as one or more of the great prizes that included Martin saddles, Wilde West buckles, and trophy garment bags. Young to old – men and women, the USCRA Finals had a place for all types of ropers and the means to offer them a chance to compete at one of the best events of the year. Out of the four days of roping, two individuals stood out just a little more than the rest. The first was Ty Thompson who stepped into the winners circle first in the Showdown Roping event. The Brekenridge, Texas cowboy won the #1 Showdown Finals with a four head total of 43.76 seconds to win just over $2,000. Thompson did not stop there though and came back and won the #1 World Finals as well. There he roped three head in 30.22 seconds, winning just under $2,000. In addition Thompson loaded up on prizes in the two events. Kyle Parrish was another roper who claimed a big part of this year’s event spotlight. The young cowboy claimed first place in the EE Semi-Finals event with a 34.13 second average, winning $1,640 in cash. His winning ways continued as he claimed the Average of the Showdown EE event also. This time the Dale, Texas competitor roped and tied four head in 41.51 seconds to win just over $3,100, as well as part of the prize line up for grabs. The event offered a chance for many competitors to share the spotlight at this year's USCRA Finals. Beginning with the B-Breakaway ropings, Lauren Winkler took home the Semi-Finals championship, while Kassidy Jones won the Showdown B-Breakaway and Ty Harris won the World Finals event in the B-Breakaway. As Kyle Parrish claimed two of the three EE event titles at the Finals, Rody Ballard from Combine, Texas claimed

Total ropers - 745 Total payout - $92,125 Prizes: 15 Wild West Buckles 5 Martin Saddles 20 garment bags the World Finals EE title. Rolling through this year’s 00 Ropings champions, Westin Imhoff was the big winner of the Semi-Finals, while Bailey Thurston took the win in the Showdown Finals event. Trinity Haggard stepped up to win the 00 World Finals title. Local Stephenville, Texas cowboy, Shane Steeves opened up early in the #1 division, winning the Semi-Finals event. However, the other two roping titles in the #1 division went home with Ty Thompson. In the #2 division, the races were tight in every event. Jacob Smith took home the #2 Semi-Finals titles, while Seth Mahaffey was the big winner of the #2 Showdown Finals. In the World Finals, Dustan DeWinne claimed the win. As usual the Lone Star Arena was more than ready for the tremendous turnout of ropers. “The Lone Star Arena crew really makes it easy for the USCRA and its members to have a roping. The Lone Star arena is definitely the home of the USCRA National Finals,” stated Lanham Mangold. More than that, ropers and their families were able to relax and enjoy what the city of Stephenville has to offer. The entertainment inside the arena spilled over into the city and ropers had plenty of things to see and do while enjoying this year’s event. “A special thanks needs to go out to the Hard 8 restaurant for hosting two USCRA parties during the finals,” added Lanham. If you were among those in Stephenville, Texas on September 16-19, 2010, you already know the event was second to none. The overall excitement of the USCRA and the upcoming season’s events made for lots of talk and anticipation among this year’s competitors. Of course plans are already underway to make next year’s USCRA Seasonending finale even bigger, so make sure you get your chance to compete and earn a position. Who knows you might be next year’s big winner!

L

ast week I was in Houston attending my grandfather-in-law’s 90th birthday party. The party was held at the very nice retirement home where he lives. The room was full of friends and family who came from all over the United States. Two men came up and introduced themselves to me as his fishing buddies. Every year the three of them would go to Mexico and fish for a week, though they hadn’t been in several years. Both men were in their sixties with one from Carlsbad, New Mexico and the other from Phoenix, Arizona. They had come all that way for a twohour birthday party. When I told them they didn’t have to do that, they both assured me they would

not have missed it for the world. That started me thinking about my family and how close we are. This year I’ll compete against three of my nephews at the NFR. This is a truly unique situation. I get to go into the heat of the battle with and compete against some of the people I love most in the world. Today I watched my seven-year-old back his pony in the box and chase some calves across the arena. I can remember when these boys were doing that very thing and now we’re all roping together at the biggest rodeo in the world. The only thing that could have made it any better is if my other nephew, Stetson, had made it, too. I can see us all being there together next year.

A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love. TM

TEXAS HORSESHOEING SCHOOL As a family we are very close and support each other 100 percent, but we don’t get in the practice pen together and compare notes. As close as we are, we are very different individuals and rope differently. You have to put in your time and figure it out for yourself. These boys have learned, as I did before them, that there is no short cut to success. It’s a lot of hard work. I guess that’s the one common denominator we all share: knowing it takes hard work and not being afraid of it. Though I’m always proud of their accomplishments, I’m more proud of the way they carry themselves in and out of the arena. I’m more proud of the men they’ve become than I am of them for qualifying for the National Finals. That’s why I root for them. Because I know their heart is pure and good. That’s what makes me such a big fan. Don’t be mistaken; we’re all going to Las Vegas with gold buckle dreams and everything that goes with that. But at the end of the year, no matter what happens, we’ll meet for Christmas. We’ll share Christmas dinner and then have our annual family ping-pong tournament.

his week at our pastors meeting, there was an assignment that was given to all of the pastors. We will be filling out our own bio’s. One of the questions on the bio is, “What is your pet peeve?” Seriously, that is such an open-ended question that has only a starting point with no end in sight. Pet peeve, just the name gives dignity to the negative. But if that is the question, we will all be happy to give an answer. “What is my pet peeve?” by Darla Weaver. My favorite pet peeve is when Randy leaves the toilet seat up in the middle of the night. I don’t need to elaborate on my reaction to that one. But my current one is very close to my heart. It is Christians who sit back and complain about government, but are too lazy and complacent to go and vote. What is up with that? Our belief in God’s Word will never be maintained in America if we don’t do what is right and use the ability and freedom to vote that people have died for. Who do you vote for? Read a voters guide, see if your elected officials are voting for what you asked them to, then support them or vote them out of office. “My vote won’t make a difference” is an ignorant excuse. “I forgot”— oh, please. “I didn’t get registered in time”— explain that to the next widow whose spouse died so you could vote. The evening news and commercials will lie like a supermarket tabloid. But what people actually do can never be misinterpreted. Several years ago I had the opportunity to go to Russia, just south of Siberia, to minister. While there I learned the heat supply to the buildings where people live is controlled by the government. This means it is a government decision when the heat to every building is turned on and turned off, as well as determining the temperature of that building. Not the people, not a person, but the government. They also do the same thing with the water supply. Imagine having water in your home only when someone else feels like you should. Not that Russia is a bad place to live. The people there are just as loyal to their country as we are to ours. Just think about it…… And get off your backside and vote what the Word of God says is true and right. Darla Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 1627 Eva. OK

– I have finally found time to sit down and get some words on paper for this month's column. Not too bad since it only hours before the magazine goes to the printer. So – bear with me this month, it might be short and sweet! I have to begin by saying there is nothing better than spending my time with my growing boys. Looking back through this year, I have spent a lot of time inside the practice arena with my boys, as well as hours on the road going to Jr. rodeos. I am not going toVSA even attempt to add up how much we spent on a new trailer, a couple of horses, a new shelter for them all and of course feed, tack, fuel and truck repairs this year. I will just chalk it up as – ‘For the Cause’

because really there is nothing I would rather be doing than spending time with my family. Jr. rodeo events offer a very unique setting for families that I believe many other producers could capitalize on. If a family guy goes to an event, he would probably want to take his family, but in many cases the wife and kids stay home because after a few of these all-day outings, they become boring. Admit it. If you were not competing, after a while it would be a little tiresome just IN HOUSE out PROOF CRX’D hanging at an all day roping. I believe associations and producers that would encourage families to attend their events, by offering extra incentives that would keep them occupied throughout the day would be a hit. Now, I

don’t know what these things would be, but I bet you could ask my wife, heck ask my kids, to see what they might want to do at an event and I’m sure you would get a few ideas. Sure the dummy roping and five vendors at the event is fun, but that can only kill about an hour out of the ten hour day they spend in anticipation of the accumulated one minute dad is actually competing. Like I said, I have no idea what could be done to make things more exciting for the entire family, but I bet you would get more participation from the dads of the world if the kids were there occupied with something they enjoyed and moms had a little more to do than keep times for each go round, keep the kids P/U W CH VSA IN HOUSE PROOF entertained and their roping counter-parts fed and hydrated. Think about it. Until next time – I wish you all the best of luck! — Ryan Davis

You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate.
