Roland Reid Memorial Calf Roping First weekend of November, opening weekend of deer season, where were you at? If you were in the deer stand, then you were not in the right place. The place to be was Cowtown Coliseum at the Stockyards in Ft. Worth, Texas for the Roland Reid Memorial Calf Roping. The annual calf roping kicked off the 2011 season for the USCRA. Calf ropers from all over the country showed up to compete for cash, buckles, and a chance to win a horse trailer.
t t
The weekend started off Friday, November 5 with a bang! Open Tie Down ropers and Open Women Breakaway ropers were excited about their newly added divisions and Jerome Schneeberger, of Ponca City, Oklahoma, took full advantage of the situation. Jerome won money in three of the four rounds on his way to the victory in the Open roping. Not only did he win $3,635, he was also the leading point winner of the weekend and was awarded a one-horse trailer for his efforts. The field of 41 ropers featured 11 former or current NFR calf ropers. The women’s breakaway had 30 entries and if you blinked your eye, you would have missed a run. No time over a 2.85 placed in any of the four rounds. Cassidy Boggs outlasted the tough competition with a 12.35 on four head. Her efforts were worth $1,235. The largest roping of the weekend was held on Saturday. There were 56 ropers in the 00 roping. A fresh calf for each roper and the LOOPS MAGAZINE • 5

small arena, offered up plenty of challenges. Rex Bland out-distanced the field by over three seconds with a 47.23 on four head. Winning a round on the way brought Rex’s total winnings to $1,490. Sunday morning started bright and early with the EE roping. With 28 ropers, only two managed to catch and tie four calves down. Mickey Nelson roped and tied his four calves in 71.66 to take home the buckle and $985. Brad McReynolds out-roped 48 ropers on his way to win the #1 roping. After the third round Brad was 6th in the Average, but with a good run and the top three ropers failing to catch, Brad moved all the way to first with a 50.59 on four runs. Brad’s paycheck was worth $1,695. Traveling all the way from Black, Alabama you know Chad Houck was serious about coming to Fort Worth to rope some calves. Chad never placed in a round, but never lost sight of the end result. With a 52.52 on four head, Chad won the #2 roping and $795. Congratulations to all the 1st and 2nd place Average winners of the weekend for winning the first “Showdown Positions” of the 2011 season. K

The 2010 season has been close with several of the best ropers in the world each taking the lead throughout the year. Trevor Brazile has a steady lead going into the Finals. He is ahead of Tuf Cooper by about $35,000, but

The New HaBIT by Krece Harris
The new Ha-BIT designed by Krece Harris, professional team roper, clinician and NRS arena director, is available to purchase at www.NRSworld.com. The new design is unlike any other bit design with one side of the mouthpiece solid and the other side broken. As a header you want your horse to stay flexed to the inside (right) towards the steer with the offside shoulder, hip and ribs staying stabilized. Just the opposite for the heeler with the horse staying flexed to the inside (left) towards the steer. The idea behind these bits is to provide the specific cheek for the unique task of flexing on one side and stabilizing the other. The Header Ha-BIT™ is designed with a solid left cheek and a broken right cheek providing offside stability and inside flex. Whereas the Heeler Ha-BIT™ is designed with the right cheek being solid and the left cheek is broken. Krece has been teaching his students for years to tighten up a little with the inside rein, but with the HaBIT™, the broken sides come into play before the solid side and you can ride with your reins even. You will get the head set in your horses before the impact from the curb on the off side. The length and angle of the shank allows enough play to where the broken side works first. The shank is wide and flat where the mouthpiece 10 • DECEMBER 2010
ties in to prevent the shank from flipping. The bit is made with 4130 sweet iron mouthpiece, stainless steel cheeks with German silver engraving, copper dots and brass. “This is something I have wanted to do for years,” Krece said. “I did not reinvent the bit, but I feel I made it better, especially for what we want out of our jackpot and rodeo horses. The Ha-BIT™ is an all-in-one bit. Not specifically just for the team roping horses does the Ha-BIT™ apply. Anytime a bit is broken you should be able to achieve flex with your horse. The key to the Ha-BIT™ is the balance of the off-side. With the offside being solid, you will be able to maintain collection and balance to prevent your horse from disengaging the hips, ribs and shoulder. You can now set your reins evenly and not have to worry about flexion or head set and at the same time wanting balance. You get them both with the Ha-BIT™.” The Ha-BIT is available is a snaffle chain, ported chain and ported snaffle mouthpiece. Find them all only at www.NRSworld.com.
PRCA launches Ram Truck Wrangler NFR Top Gun Award Courtesy of PRCA
The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), in conjunction with Ram Truck, announced today that it is launching the Ram Truck Wrangler NFR Top Gun Award during the 2010 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Feeding off the excitement the world championship
races create, this prestigious award will honor the cowboy or cowgirl who earns the most money during the grueling 10-day PRCA ProRodeo Finals. “We are always looking for ways to make the Wrangler NFR more interactive for our millions of fans” said PRCA Commissioner Karl Stressman. “We believe the Ram Truck Wrangler NFR Top Gun Award will be an exciting new competition for fans to follow and will shine a welldeserved spotlight on that one competitor who comes to Vegas and has the best 10-day run of anyone. To excel and win the most money during the most competitive, most intense 10 days of ProRodeo is a huge accomplishment that deserves additional recognition.” The winner of the Ram Truck Top Gun Award will receive a one-of-akind wrapped Ram truck, a custom buckle from Montana Silversmiths and one-of-a-kind Ram Truck Top Gun-branded rifle from Commemorative Firearms. In addition to being recognized during the 10th round of the WNFR in the Thomas & Mack Center Arena, the winner will also be celebrated during The Official Wrangler NFR World Champion Awards Show and 10th Night AfterParty, in conjunction with The Mirage Hotel & Casino and RodeoVegas. “We are extremely excited to partner with the PRCA on this unique initiative,” said Fred Diaz, president and CEO of Ram Truck Brand and executive responsible for national sales, Chrysler Group LLC. “This award honors excellence, endurance and consistent delivery of top results under the toughest conditions. Those are core values to the Ram brand and we look forward to awarding a new 2011 Ram truck to the competitor who has the best WNFR.” “The innovative element of this award is that it is a cross-event competition,” said PRCA Deputy Commissioner Matt Barnett. “The
fans will be able to follow the results nightly, and it may come down to a great race between a steer wrestler and a barrel racer to determine who earns that one extra dollar and walks away with the Ram Truck Top Gun Award. We appreciate the willingness of Ram Truck to jump on board with this new award and we fully believe that this Ram Truck Top Gun competition will quickly become a huge fan favorite.” Fans will be able to follow the Ram Truck Top Gun race throughout the Finals by going to the WNFR live scoreboard on prorodeo.com and tuning in to telecasts on ESPN Networks.

hanksgiving is in a few days and is a time when I reflect on how thankful I am to be able do what I love with my family at my side. Soon we will head to Vegas where I’ll have the opportunity to win more money than I have all year. This is a blessing and I thank God every day for the opportunities before me. While being an NFR competitor might seem like a rock star existence, the responsibilities and obligations to sponsors that go with the territory can be overwhelming. Many people don’t realize everything that’s happening during the NFR. In addition to the rodeo every night, there are four trade shows in different locations, there are several talk shows every day, there are rodeo affiliated shows and presentations every night, and the thousands and thousands of people that are there to enjoy the experience.
We get to Vegas six days before the rodeo starts and every day we are in meetings, photo shoots, or breaking in calves. During the NFR every day is taken up with appearances and autograph sessions. I’m very humbled to sign autographs and it amazes me that someone actually wants my signature. You’re meeting someone new every fifteen seconds or so and I feel like it’s important to make a personal connection and say hello when I do meet them. I probably walk three to five miles every day while I’m out there and invariably get shin splints every year. Trying to get from one sponsor’s booth to the other can be tricky. If I finish up an autograph session at one booth at 12:30, I’m usually scheduled at another booth at 12:30. Getting from point A to point B without getting stopped over and
A special thanks to my sponsors for supporting not only me, but also the sport that lets me do what I love. TM

over is almost impossible. Oddly enough, the most relaxing part of my day is when I go out to the Thomas & Mack and get ready for the rodeo. I take a deep breath and think, “Now I get to rope.” That’s my peaceful time. This year I’m riding a new horse, one that’s never been to the NFR. He’s going to use my experience this year. Unless I’m mistaken, he may be the best horse I’ve ever had there. Jennifer’s job is a whole other ball game and she’s just as busy as I am during the day. She’s putting stories and shows together. People don’t realize the hours and people it takes to do a 30second “Behind the Chute” segment. There are literally hundreds of people involved in the telecast of that show. And she has to know her stuff in all the events. She knows every bull and bucking horse, who’s ridden them and what the scores were because she has to be able to ask intelligent questions. She studies all that information in preparation. Plus she’s a mom and this year she’s pregnant. Both of our parents are out there helping with the boys while we work. Jennifer and I just kind of blow and go and see each other when we can. Believe me I’m not complaining. I’ve been home watching the NFR on television and I would much rather be there competing. This year is especially exciting with five of us in my family competing: my three nephews Clint, Clif and Tuf Cooper, Trevor and myself. My goal is to be in the mix when they’re doing the math for the top spot after the 9th round. I don’t want all the money – just my share of it. Till next time God Bless, and I’ll see you down the line.

What is faith?
H
ebrews 11:6 says that “without faith it is impossible to please God.” I suppose that if you have taken time to read this article, you have some interest in pleasing God. If so, faith is your key to understanding and practicing a successful relationship with the Creator, God Himself. There are many definitions of faith. I would like to give you this simple explanation, faith always requires action. Simply put, when God sends His Word to ask us to do something, whether it be something that God is doing in our heart or whether He is asking us to step out and

do something that we have never done before, faith always says yes to God. In other words, when God says jump, we say how far and where? The Scripture says in James 2:20 “that faith without works is dead.” Many people operate their entire spiritual life in the realm of fear. I have met many tough people on the outside, but who the biggest chickens when it came to stepping out and trusting God and His Word. The fear that takes hold will limit you, your destiny, your purpose, as well as your prosperity. Many of you reading this article have experienced the frustration of dealing with a barn sour horse. That horse has grown so accustomed to the atmosphere of the barn because that is where he is fed, where he is watered, and where he lives. When you ask him to leave that barn, to leave his comfort zone, to go to a place that he doesn’t know, he rebels in high fashion. Many people, because they have never experienced the adventure of stepping out by faith, have never experienced the fulfillment or joy that God has already made available to those who seek Him diligently and consistently with their whole heart. Sometimes that step is merely finding a good Bible-based church that you can commit to and that will help you in your walk of faith. My challenge to you is to not allow past experiences to influence you into the same mind frame as a barn sour horse when it comes to living an abundant life of faith. Trust me, this will work if you will work it. Randy Weaver, Pastor Lone Star Cowboy Church 1627 Eva. he year is up, number 12 is here and that means we are all another year older and wiser, in most cases! The holidays are upon us, Christmas is up close and personal and the New Year is banging on the door. Seems like we were at this same point just a few months ago, doesn’t it? Thinking back over the past year, I have to say a lot has happened. Maybe that is why it went so fast and furious. Like the old saying goes, “Time fly’s when you’re having fun.” Well, I had lots of fun. From keeping up with my four boys through sports and Jr. rodeo events, staying busy here at the office and taking on a few other new ventures outside of it has been a full year. But you
know, I would not trade it in. Sure, there are times that are stressful, when deadlines are drawing near, or when the monthly dollar just can’t stretch far enough, but those don’t really compare to the multitude of great memories we made. I hope each of you have some good memories to look back on as well. I know things are different for each of us, but I know life is way too short to cloud up all of the good stuff with negatives, as I think so many people do. There is one thing I do that I believe helps each day, I smile at strangers. I don’t care if it’s walking down the street, inside stores, stopped at a stoplight, or just about anywhere, if I catch someone’s

In many cases I get one in return, or at least a second glance and I know I made that person's life just a little better, I mean come on, who doesn’t like a smile? To wrap things up for this month and really for 2010, I want to say Merry Christmas! I hope you have a great one! THE FIRST 5 STRAND CALF ROPE WITH A CORE What happens when 5 strands of low stretch poly fibers are woven around a solid braided core? You get a rope with speed and snap as quick as a viper’s strike, but with more consistency and less stretch than any calf rope on the market today. With the feel of your favorite poly-grass and the strength and stability that only core-tech can give it, you won’t break this rope. And like a viper, its the same every time....Deadly accurate. Follow TheClassicRealDeal on:
