Thank you for picking up this issue, and supporting the womens surf industry. We publish WSSM for all you women and girls out there that surf, have surfed in the past, or just love the surfing lifestyle.

Most of you probably don’t get to surf as often as you would like, and we hope that WSSM is the cure you’ll turn to, to satisfy the surf cravings within.

This issue is jam-packed with all kinds of goodies to enjoy as we head into spring, including a fantastic SURF. BEACH. LIFESTYLE. 2011 Fashion Guide (90), that showcases new apparel & accessories that perfectly compliment a surfer’s lifestyle. SURF STOKED, 80 Seconds to the Outside (66), is my (Sandra) personal story of working through the mental anguish while finding the courage to make it to the “outside” on a big day, on Oahu’s famed north shore. I hope this story inspires you to dig deep, paddle harder, and accomplish your goals as you surf bigger waves, one second at a a time.

RAILS & TALES showcases the WSSM surf trip to Panama in PANAMAniac (34)... Our first time in Panama, and an adventure we thoroughly enjoyed. TACA airlines treated our surfboards with the utmost respect (unlike Delta), and we embraced beautiful, empty waves that were all ours for the taking, perfect weather, and an awesome host (Morro Negrito Surf Camp) that made this trip one we’ll never forget. We hope you enjoy learning more about this fascinating, and undiscovered country, and make the journey there yourself, someday soon.

In our PRO SECTION, we’ve caught up with several pro-surfers that are pioneeiring women’s surfing. t was finally here...

Panama awaited us, and we were SO ready to go!

The day started off at the Waffle House, across from the Daytona 500, as we waited for our photographer, Gabriel, to finish photography class.

After filling our bellies with the last US meal we would enjoy for a week, we headed to FedEx to mail my diamond ring back home. We had been in Florida for business, but didn’t want to be “targets” in South America, so we were taking all the necessary precautions.

After all, no need to tempt anyone there, right?

We picked up an excited Gabriel and headed to the airport, surfboard bags sticking out the side of our small rental car. We were excited... After months of planning and research, we were finally on our way!

Arriving at the airport, we searched several floors of the parking garage before finally finding a cart (we never pay for those things!), and piled it high with backpacks and board bags, then headed for the TACA Airlines counter.

Unlike most airlines these days, TACA Airlines checked us in with glowing smiles and everyone was extremely helpful. We knew the board bags would be a hassle- they usually are, but surprisingly-- not at TACA. It was almost like it was a usual occurrence for surfers to be traveling with them.

That’s when we knew there was definitely something different about flying with TACA. Unbeknownst to us, included in the flight (for FREE) was a nice meal (even on our 45min flights), and right after takeoff they came by with drink carts stocked with complimentary snacks, coffee, soda, juice, and adult beverages.

Free headsets were also offered (with a smile), and with over 30 movies to enjoy on our personal video screens, time flew. Upon landing in El Salvador for a quick plane change, a cruise of the airport- making note of anything we liked and might want to pick up as a souvenir on the way home-IF we didn’t happen to find it in Panama City, we were back onto TACA to our next leg, Costa Rica.

TACA filled us with another round of food and drinks, a bevy of in-flight entertainment, and touchdown—we were in Costa Rica. It was the rainy season for South America this time of year, and clouds filled the evening sky,

The Costa Rican & El Salvadorian airports were quite interesting to explore, and with a 1 hour layover, we spent it cruising the shops, sipping on coffee samples (the airport shops offer free coffee, chocolate and liquor samples right there in the airport. Strange, but who’s gonna turn down free coffee!) and watching the planes come and go on the water-soaked runway.

Boarded flight #3 and we were now amped. Next stop? PANAMA!!!

Touchdown...

Panama City!

Once through customs, we were greeted by David; Morro Negrito had sent him to meet us, take us to the bus station, purchase tickets, and show us where to wait-- nice!

Our good friend, Christina (surfer/ photographer), who had arrived earlier from Florida on a different airline was with him also. After excited hugs, jumping up and down in excitement, anticipating the fun we were about to have, we followed David to the van, loaded our bags, and made our way through downtown Panama City to the bus station. Now Panama’s bus system is a little different than what you’ll find in the States... To start with, the terminal was more like an airport... 2 levels, and HUNDREDS of double-decker buses that were plush—and air conditioned. We had been told to dress warm for the ride—the night bus was known to be a bit frigid.

After a bite to eat at the bus terminal, we purchased water and boarded our bus (only $15 US per person for a 5 hour ride) bound for the province of David. The midnight bus would be making one stop about 3 1/2 hours into the trip, and we were warned to set our watches and NOT FALL ASLEEP after that point, as we would have to remind the driver to let us off at our remote stop. It was in the middle of nowhere, and if we missed it, it could be hours before getting back. Sure enough, it WAS in the middle of nowhere, but it wasn’t a problem, because as soon as we got off the bus, we were greeted by our Morro Negrito contact, who loaded up the boards and bags again, and we began the slow 1/2 hour drive to the waters edge, through winding roads hedged with thick, lush, jungle foliage.

Arriving at the Morro Negrito Surf Camp “holding area” was a relief. It had now been 15+ hours of travel, and brushing our teeth, taking vitamins, wrapping our bags securely in plastic (they warned us everything may get soaked during the boat ride- they were right!), and catching a quick snooze was at the top of our lists. Though the staff offered us beds to sleep in as we waited, we opted for the outdoor

hammocks instead, and relaxed as Gabriel snapped photos of the local horse that roamed freely about, the chickens, and a picturesque bridge near the boat launch. We were waiting for the tide to rise high enough to allow the boat to come pick us up.

7am brought the sound of the boat’s motor, and we eagerly gathered our bags and started down the cobblestone path to the boat launch. Doug (surf guide) and Irvin (boat captain) greeted us. We piled in and were off for a watery, rain-drenched ½ hour ride down a winding, twisting river, surrounded by thick jungle, leading to the open ocean. Majestic outcroppings of black rocks and small islands dotted the horizon everywhere. After 15 minutes, we could finally see the Morro Negrito Surf Camp up ahead, with its bright orange bungalows dotted against the deep green and uninhabited landscape.

The rain began to let up SLIGHTLY as we arrived on shore where a handful of staff greeted us and proceeded to carry ALL our bags and boards up to the camp- what service! A short 3 minute walk later, and we had arrived at camp, soaked to the bone, but stoked on our adventure as we followed our guides to our individual rooms.

Well groomed trails seem to lead in all directions, each to its own small bungalow, and since Dan and I were the only couple on the trip, we got to stay in the family room, which was farthest from shore, but also had its own private lanai and bathroom, and the best view!

Smooth, round, black rocks tumbled in and out with the shoreline break- a mere 25 yards below, and the bungalow overlooked Emily’s… a nice little left that was dependant on the tide levels, but always a fun way to catch a few more waves before dinner, when you needed just one more!

Emily’s was unique in that you could surf it ANYTIME you wanted since you didn’t need a boat to get to it, and your friends could watch you surf from the nearby openaired dining room or hammocks.

It was like having your own cheering section!

That first day in we took much needed naps, and woke to the sound of the lunch bell (love that sound every morning, afternoon and night!). After a filling meal, Christina, Dan and I loaded up the boat with the boards, accompanied by Doug (surf guide), and Eric (boat captain), and we left in search of surf.

Morro Negrito Surf Camp is awesome in that there are all styles of waves available. The staff made sure we knew which spots we were surfing, and where they were on the large map drawn on the dining room wall... offering a buffet of

waves and conditions. You have ankle-kissing baby waves near the boat launch (Elijah’s), Emily’s- the smaller break directly in front of the camp, and Snickers—which soon became one of our favorite waves. Snickers is a solid beach break, canvassed by a mile-long black sand beach, and gets REALLY good on a rising tide (lefts and rights). El Toro (the bull) is another great wave, nestled between giant, foliage covered black rocks, and offering a punchy left or right that looks like it’s going to break right on shore—yet you rarely touch the sandy bottom.

There are more advanced waves available- on the right swell- such as Nestles (we didn’t get to surf this spot since it only breaks when it gets over 15ft). Nestles is apparently a death defying drop, into an extremely shallow, boulder-filled, ocean bottom— and just waiting to teach you a lesson. We’re told this is a pop-up fast- while air-dropping into a stand-up barrel that shoots you like a rocket out of the danger zone. No shoulder to speak of on this wave AT ALL. Yikes!

Lastly, you also have the ever popular Point, which was close to camp, and offered heaving barrels galore. Less sketchy than Nestles, this was the spot to hone your barrel riding skills, without the crowd.

At the Point, a steep and dedicated takeoff is mandatory, and there’s no avoiding the closeout by going for a doggy-door here either. On the waves that barreled, you had to ride into a closeout almost every time, or pay your dues on the shallow, rock-infested inside, that sits mercilessly near a steep, un-scalable cliff. Not the friendliest conditions, but a magnificent wave to say the least.

While the Point was FUN we later found out, it also drew most of the other 10 surfers at camp, and after living in Hawaii and dealing with crowds, this spot wasn’t at the top of our list. After all, we were in Panama to surf waves all to ourselves, without hassling with lineups or overly aggressive paddle-battlers.

Instead, our crew usually opted for Snickers, which hosted 6’-10’+ wave, after wave, after beautiful glassy wave, after another.

As with any surf spot in Panama, the tide really affects the breaks, so on our first day in, we chose the Rock, which was just that… a little rock sticking out of the ocean, that peeled a fun right-hander, with a sometimes, make-able section.

Coming from Hawaii, this little wave was a lot of fun to play around on, and I got a serious wake-up call when I caught the rail of my board… squarely on the right jaw.

Hearing an alarming crack and fearing the worse I checked my teeth—they were still all there.

the inside of my mouth where my teeth had almost pierced through my cheeks. Swelling set in and by nightfall—I looked a bit like a chipmunk hoarding food—for a really long winter.

Not all bad came from the accident however. Back at camp that night, after multiple chunks of ice were applied, I was officially awarded the camp’s daily trophy of excellence.

Surf guide, Jordan, explained that every evening, directly after dinner, they give an award to the person who really gave it their all that day, made an impressive snap or maneuver, or also- for the most stupid move of the day. I laughingly accepted the award, admitting I had won for the latter, and promised to try to get the award later in the week, for something “smarter”.

That night, worn out from traveling, we were asleep by 8:30—and dreaming of surf.

Dan and I were excited to greet our longtime friend and surf buddy, Sarah Dean, to camp the next morning. She had endured a laborious flight delay coming out of Hawaii due to engine plane failure, but had now finally arrived!

Now, Sarah is famous for getting hurt. The girl rips/charges/she does it all... but she occasionally beats herself up in the process. So upon her arrival, the rest of us felt better-- knowing she was likely to be the one taking the “injury” cake.

Coffee and a breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs and fried Indian bread with jelly filled us up, after which we grabbed our boards, some snacks for later on the boat, and headed out for our first surf session that day.

El Toro was the call this time… and we enjoyed a day of trading wave after wave with our core group of 6, hooting each other on.

Dan was stoked to be in the water and experimenting with his new HD GoPro Camera that he had mounted on the nose of his board via an FCS plug. He later realized that some his best and favorite video taken was of us duckdiving through the waves when paddling back out. But, he warns to watch out when duck-diving, because he took the skin off his nose a couple of times before he learned his lesson-- to not bring his head so close to the camera.

That session was one of those when all you can do is sit on your board, drinking in the exotic beauty around you, and wondering why you’ve been blessed with such an experience. Life doesn’t get much better.

No injuries to report this second day… tired, sunburned and worn out though, we hit the beds early, in anticipation of the building swell and our 5:30am wake-up call.

Ding, ding, ding… the

breakfast bell awoke us from a delicious, deep sleep, and it was all we could do to pull ourselves out of our comfy beds, and into a cold shower to wake up.

The sun peeked up soon, revealing a well-formed Emily’s. The swell had come up—a little bit! Excitedly, we ate breakfast, and headed to the boat launch, where we each helped the boat guys by lying wood down in front of the boat, and rolling/ pushing them to the waters edge.

Kind of tribal and a very different surf experience. The other surfers (5 guys) took one boat to go check an outer island spot, and their girlfriends piled into the WSSM boat, for a quick ride over to Snickers.

Leslie (camp chef), was just learning to surf. She was a bit cautious, yet eager to surf with all the girls, but was admittedly in over her head when one big set rolled through (which we couldn’t believe she paddled for- and caught). It took her all the way to the beach! After considerable effort, she simply wasn’t able to make it back to the outside, so she settled for an onshore view of the action. Rayna and Milica had surfed before, but due to where they live (MT and northern CA) they don’t get the chance to do so very often, so Snickers, this day, was a great way to get them back in the water—without having to deal with barrels, or wave hungry dudes.

After 2 hours of fun waves, we all piled back onto the boat and headed over to EL Toro, where we enjoyed more countless waves and laughter. What a fun day!

Evening came, and it was my turn to pass the trophy torch. I gave it to Rayna, who- though she had just had a baby 18 months before, and RARELY surfed, had gone above and beyond – paddling herself into overhead waves, and riding them!

Rayna had easily overcome the intimidation that comes with surfing with a group of girls she didn’t know, that were better surfers, and she didn’t give up. Way to go Rayna!

The swell continued to rise overnight, and we slept to the sound of rain pounding on the tin roof while waves crashed below.

With not a mosquito in sight, we didn’t utilize the mosquito nets- thankfully, and awoke to the breakfast bell, once again.

This was the day of all days for Dan and me in particular. The group headed to Snickers, but the tide hadn’t quite come up enough yet, causing closeout conditions.

Christina and Sarah became disillusioned and headed back to camp after about an hour to try out Emily’s and later on- the Point. Dan and I, Doug (surf guide) and

Eric (boat captain) stayed behind-where we soon enjoyed one of the most memorable, epic and perfect surf sessions of the trip.

Doug had advised us all to stay, saying the rising tide would fill in nice; dissolving the dumpy, shifty, morning conditions. He is a wise man! Sure enough, about 45min after the girls left, the wave turned on, churning out set, after set, after set, of well overhead, perfectly glassy, smooth faces-- both lefts and rights! You would catch a wave, paddle a short distance back out, and there came another one, and another one, and another one.

Seashells littered the beach as far as the eye could see, and sand dollars the size of small pancakes were easily found. What a magnificent place Panama is!

The swell held and we all enjoyed some barrels at the Point the next day, amid pouring rain and the most crowded session we had surfed to date while in Panama.

headed back to Panama City where Christina and Sarah would be joining us later that evening.

We left in the early afternoon, eager for our 5 hour bus ride through the countryside during the day, so that we could get a feel for the “real” Panama.

It looked a lot like Mexico, brightly colored buildings, small towns where simplicity in living is just regular life for most. Pure poverty is the norm, but they don’t seem to mind and for the most part are a happy and welcoming people.

We spent the night at a nice hotel ($42 US total- no tax, for 3 people) called the Vera Cruz, in the heart of Panama City. It was 70’s decor to the core, but extremely clean and we felt safe there. Across the street we checked out the Fiesta Casino.

Initially Dan wasn’t allowed in because he wore a shirt with cutoff sleeves, however (with a sweatshirt on) we did finally go in, only to find guys in slippers, wearing old, dirty stained t-shirts, and women in spaghetti strap tank tops. What a trip!

Panama City itself was quite beautiful and picturesque. Old buildings that were once quite detailed and ornate line the narrow streets. Far away on the horizon, large ships and barges wait in long lines for their turn to pass through the Panama Canal.

That day we explored an older part of Panama City, also known as the French quarter, gathering souvenirs, macking on $.75 gourmet hotdogs and snapping photos.

One thing we noticed while in Panama, is that EVERYONE uses US dollars! No matter where we went, from the fruit stands, to the restaurants, to the airport & bus terminals... EVERYONE uses US dollars, and acted as though we were from Mars, when we asked for Panamanian money for our coin collection.

We managed to find some coins here and there, but we could count them on one hand. Nuts!

Christina and Sarah left early in the day to catch their flights home, but the rest of us weren’t due to fly out until the next day—which meant we would have time to check out the Panama Canal! Yeah!

After our morning of adventure in the city, David picked us up at 4pm and took us to the canal, where we got to see one of the great wonders of the world. Built in 1913,

everything about the Panama Canal oozed with history, making it a very surreal experience.

David explained to us how the locks work, the schedules on which the ships pass through (different directions at different times), all of which was rather interesting. One ship in particular came through right as we entered the 4th level viewing deck. The seamen were yelling and waving at all of us tourists, laughing and beckoning to us, celebrating what must have been a milestone in their journey. It was as if they had been out to sea for MONTHS and were excited to return to civilization. What a different life that must be than ours.

Looking back, Panama was so much more than we had anticipated and hoped for. Though we endured sea lice and Portuguese Man-o-war that stung us, intense rain and lightening storms at night, a banged up jaw and loosened teeth for two of us girls, we had enjoyed ourselves tremendously.

On the injury list, my swollen jaw was a battle wound that could have been a lot worse. A nasty fin cut turned into a gnarly looking bruise that lasted for weeks, and in addition, I also nearly knocked out my front teeth. Seriously! Having too much fun and not paying attention to an approaching set after exiting a wave was my mistake.

I whipped my board around too quickly, placing it between me and the wave-- a real no-no. I got hit so hard, my teeth actually punctured the fiberglass, and were a bit wobbly for the next day or so. Thank you, God, they’re all good to go now. Sarah, our other casualty, was true to her reputation of injuries, as she also made contact with her board. Upon surfacing after a long hold down at the Point, she caught the tail of her board directly in the mouth! It completely knocked out her lower retainer, but her teeth were saved!

Minor injuries (war wounds?) aside, we had the most fulfilling, wonderful time in Panama and at the Morro Negrito Surf Camp. The food was good, people friendly, landscape inspiring, and the surf will definitely be calling us back for many years to come.

PUSH-UP

to Better Duck Dives

Push-ups are a great way to stay fit and strong,

they work your entire back, chest and arms, and can be done anywhere, anytime, making them a super-duper, duck-diving necessity.

When you duck-dive your board through a wave (short boards only) it requires a lot of upper body strength, and you’ll also need endurance to make it through each set of waves.

If you burn out after one set and have to turtleroll your way through the next or even worse, bail your board and swim down, then the following exercises will benefit you the most.

Practice these moves 2-4 times per week over the next 3 months and watch your duck-diving skills and fitness level improve dramatically!

The following 3 moves work together to target your entire upper body including the abdominal muscles, as well as the buttock and leg muscles, that is, if you use proper form and are doing them right. All three moves can be performed in “traditional” pushup position or in “girlie” pushup position, or a combination of the two depending on your fitness level.

DISCLAIMER: Always check with your physician before starting or performing these or any other exercise. Should you feel pain, stop immediately and rest.

------------------------------------u GIRLY PUSH-UP (warm up) ------------------------------------While performing pushups in the bent-knee position (a.k.a. girlie push-ups), you may feel like you’re not really working very hard, but this is actually an essential way to start your workout by gently warming up the chest, arms and back without straining or pulling them. Let’s call it “prep work”. It’s also a great way to finish a set if you’re extremely tired but are determined to finish.

A girlie push up is performed exactly like a traditional push up when it comes to hand placement, but the key here is to place your knees on the ground, providing support to your core and assisting the arms (placed slightly farther than shoulder width apart), and shoulders during the push-up movement.

When you can complete all 3 exercises (3 sets each) in the “girly push-up” position without excessive straining then you should begin performing the exercises in the traditional pushup pose.

Lay on your stomach on the floor as if you were going to do a regular push-up.

Place your hands flat on the floor so that your elbows are up and out ward at a ninety-degree angle.

(This is proper form for any push-up.)

Keep your knees on the floor as you push your upper body up and off of the floor. Be sure to keep your torso as straight as possible from the top of your head to the bottom of your spine. (Don’t forget to keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle.)

Slowly lower yourself down to the floor, keeping your back straight, as far down as possible without your body or nose touching the floor. Repeat steps 1-4.

Wide arm push-ups are performed exactly like the traditional push-up, the only variation is the placement of your hands and arms. Arms should be at almost twice your shoulder width.

TIP: Try performing this exercise in “girlie push-up” form (knees on the floor) until you’re comfortable with the position and are strong enough to support your full weight.

TRADITIONAL PUSH-UP

------------------------------The traditional push-up can be one of your favorite exercises once you build up your strength, but it’s important to keep your body straight and not allow the lower back to sag towards the floor. Breath throughout the entire exercise.

Lie flat on the floor or another hard surface that can support your body weight. Keep your feet together.

Place your hands slightly farther than shoulder width apart with your palms on the ground. Curl your toes upward (towards your head) so that the balls of your feet touch the ground.

-----------------------Again, this exercise is performed exactly like a traditional push-up, only the placement of your hands is different.

Place your hands close together, with your index fingers and your thumbs touching, forming a diamond shape - then slowly lower your body towards the groundjust like a tradiitional push-up.

These are hard!

TIP: Try performing this exercise in “girlie push-up” form (knees on the floor) until you’re comfortable with the position and are strong enough to support your full weight.

WIDE-ARM PUSH-UP

Raise yourself using your arms. At this point, your hands and the balls of your feet should be supporting your weight.

(This position is called “plank,” which is used for other various exercises.

This is the beginning and the end position of a single push-up.)

Make sure you’re balanced and steady, then slowly lower your torso to the ground until your elbows form a 90degree angle. Keep your head facing forward and try to keep your nose pointed directly forward as you’re lowering down. Breath IN as you lower yourself.

PAUSE… Then raise yourself back up by attempting to push the ground away

W

ake up your body and mind in the morning by doing these Yoga poses. You’ll feel refreshed, revitalized, focused, aware, energized and relaxed as well as feeling stronger, more confident, and peaceful. Your self-esteem and concentration will improve and you’ll reconnect with your spirit.

The most important of all is staying in a relaxed state by focusing on your breath at all times, being very gentle on your body, never forcing or straining in any way, moving slowly and lovingly into and out of each pose. Relax into every pose and stay centered in your core.

Yoga will enhance every part of your life, especially surfing. Yoga and surfing go hand in hand. Both are about breath, balance, flexibility, concentration, strength, endurance, and staying in a focused and relaxed state. By doing yoga, you’ll be able to paddle stronger and surf longer.

Tip: Always inhale as you lift up, and exhale as you release down.

Don’t hold your breath; instead use the power of your breath to energize you. Expand your lungs completely, from the bottom to the top and exhale slowly and completely. Sometimes emotions will come up and this is very good. Let the feelings flow through you as you exhale and let them go, just like observing white clouds passing by across the blue sky.

It’ll take about 5 – 15 minutes do these poses. Five minutes may seem like nothing, yet after five minutes you’ll feel like a new person. If you do yoga regularly, even just 5 minutes a day, after one year you’ll see and feel so many benefits, and after ten years of doing Yoga for five minutes a day you would have done about 300 hours of Yoga. That’s pretty good on 5 minutes a day! It’s like saving money, for example, five dollars may not be much. But if you save five dollars a day for a year, you’ll have $1,825.00, and after ten years you’ll have saved $18,250 and we haven’t even added the interest. Yoga is all about “interest” in your real Self.

By doing Yoga you’re investing in yourself, your health, and in your inner peace and happiness.

Yoga is not about perfection, it’s all about moving in the right direction. No matter how you feel about your flexibility

and strength now, focus only on going in the right direction. Just like you can’t force a flower to blossom, nor should you force your body in any way. Keep doing Yoga regularly and with patience and practice you’ll see how wonderful you’re feeling- and this is true perfection. The more you do Yoga, the more benefits you will feel from every pose.

Start every pose from the mountain pose, and end each pose with the back bend and forward bend. This will help your muscles stay warm, flexible and relaxed.

Mountain Pose

(Tadasana) Standing up straight, legs together, hands at the belly – one hand over the other. Focus on one point in front of you or close your eyes. Breathe deeply and allow the belly to expand as you inhale and deflate as you exhale. Get grounded and centered and take 5 - 10 deep breaths.

Move into the BACK BEND as you bring the hands together over the head, stretch up and back. Bring the pelvis forward and tighten the buttock muscles. Continue breathing deeply for several breaths, allow the lungs to expand from the bottom to the top with each inhalation, and deflate with each exhalation. Roll-up slowly and release down to the forward bend pose.

Benefits: Improves flexibility in the spine. Strengthens the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Increases lung capacity and brings oxygen to the body.

From the back bend stretch the arms out to the side and as you exhale bend forward from the hips, not from the waist.

Bend the knees, relax your head down, and grab the back of your legs with your hands. Press the heels firmly into the ground and lift the sitting bones up. Keep breathing for 10 – 15 breaths and keep the neck and shoulders relaxed. Allow yourself to surrender, let go, feel the stretch in your spine, hips, and legs. Roll up very gently and slowly, feeling the spine stretching gently.

Benefits: Allows blood to flow to the head and soothes the mind and increases energy. Massages the internal organs, stretches and strengthens the leg muscles, and stretches the spine and hips.

Warrior I Pose

Repeat 1 – 2 times on each side. Take 5 – 10 breaths on each side.

From mountain pose, bring right leg forward and left leg back, bend the right knee directly over the right ankle, and exhale as you release the hips down. Back foot should be at a 45 degree angle.

Gently pivot from the hips, reach forward with the arms as you lift back with the left leg. Keep a straight line from your left foot to your hand and breathe deeply.

Inhale as you lift up and come back to mountain pose.

Switch to the other side, going down further as you pivot from the hips each time.

Eventually the body will be parallel to the ground. Be very gentle and don’t force or strain. Just enjoy every breath.

Warrior III Pose Place your hands on the hips to make sure hips are squared and evenly facing to the front. Bring the arms straight up over the head, palms together.

Stretch your arms up, look up, and drop the head back. Keep the shoulders relaxed as you release the hips down. Stay grounded as you reach up to the sky.

Take several deep breaths, step forward back to mountain pose and repeat on the other side. Be very gentle, don’t force or strain, enjoy every stretch and every breath Benefits: Warms you up. Strengthens and stretches the shoulders, arms, abdomen, thighs, ankles, and the back muscles. Expands the chest, lungs, and shoulders.

Increases lung capacity, stamina, endurance, balance, and concentration.

Benefits: Helps quiet the mind, calm the nervous system and will lift up your mood. Strengthens back, legs, abdomen, shoulders and arm muscles.

Stretches hamstrings and thighs. Expands the chest, lungs and shoulders. Improves memory, concentration, posture, and balance. Tones and invigorates the whole body.

What make up essentials would you recommend to give me a fresh, “barely there”, but polished appearance to help me feel more confident about my appearance while I am at work?

A: “Awesome question Alexis. It’s important to feel and look polished when you are working, regardless of what your profession is and I understand how it can become trickier when your profession is physical. Below are the features of your face and the products you want to focus on to keep you looking fresh and polished.

1. BROWS The first area that is always overlooked, but is so key for a polished appearance are the eyebrows. Most don’t realize this until I fill one brow in and show them the difference between the other. Your eyebrows help to bring a well-rounded structure to your face and of course pop your eyes.

For the most part, my favorite way to fill eyebrows are with a pencil such as SHU UEMURA’S “HARD NINE” brow pencil. Ultimately you want to try to add more definition to the brow vs. just adding color.

Think of it as if you’re trying to draw a soft frame around them, filling in the little blanks. Make sure you have a sharp pencil because a dull one can result in applying too thick of a line.

2. SKIN Next you want a cream concealer such as MARK’S “GOOD RIDDANCE” concealer pencil for under your eyes and around your nose where natural shadows and discolorations tend to be. I like applying it to my skin with my fingers and then using a natural hair makeup brush to blend it out. This helps to keep it looking very natural.

3. CHEEKS/LIPS Another important element for this look is a flushed cheek. Adding some color to the apples of your cheeks is an excellent way to flatter the skin. A hint of color on the lips to match your cheeks will keep everything pulled together in a very “undone” manner. A lip stain that can also be used as a cheek stain such as KORRES “LIP BUTTER” is awesome for this reason. You can continue to re-apply this product to both areas and it never gets cakey or overdone because it deposits such a soft wash of color while adding a dewy finish to the skin. Don’t be afraid of bright colors because they tend to look more natural than you think.

4. EYES Simplicity is key here. A good, volumizing waterproof mascara will pop your eyes open without having to use anything else. I can always rely on “DIORSHOW’ by Christian Dior for this.

Applying all of the above should take no more than around 15 minutes, but will leave you looking effortlessly beautiful. Hope this helped!” Roxy

But unfortunately, we just don’t seem to get enough in this hectic and fast paced life that we lead.

Without energy it’s easy to get grumpy, listless and lazy. So what do you do when you just can’t seem to get your act together? Read on.

Here are our 3 favorite ways to energize your body!

WHEATGRASS Yes, the stuff you get at Jamba Juice or natural food stores. A handy way to take it is in the powder form such as Green Kamut, and you CAN disguise the “grassy” taste by simply mixing it with apple juice… It really helps!

I personally have found that after drinking wheatgrass after only a week, I can skip my coffee each morning without so much as a passing thought. That’s a miracle for this coffee-junky.

CAUTION: Don’t let the clerk sell you a double shot to start off with or tell you to take 1-2 teaspoons in the beginning. A ½ teaspoon MAX should be taken each day (powder form) until your body adjusts, or a ½ to a single shot when taken in liquid form. Wheatgrass is a powerful cleanser with potent detoxifying powers and should be taken carefully so as not to upset your stomach.

PROMAX BARS Low in fat and carbohydrates, but high in protein and flavor, these protein bars beat all the others. Slightly more expensive but oh-so-worth it, these bars are perfect for right before you paddle out, and come in such a tempting array of flavors such as black forest cake, chocolate coconut, iced oatmeal raisin, wild berry cheesecake, caramel macchiato… deciding which one to eat will be the hard part. “Loved for being light and fluffy, even though it’s mostly wheat flour... this (modified) recipe was used extensively in my family and has enjoyed many variations over the years.

It can be found in its original format in the Betty Crocker Red Checked Cookbook along with many other tried & true recipes.”

INGREDIENTS 1 c. wheat flour 1/3 c. white flour ¾ cup rolled oats 2 tsp. baking soda ¼ tsp. salt 1 beaten egg ½ c. milk ¼ c. oil 2 lg. bananas (mashed)

milk to egg mixture, stir together well and set aside.

Mash bananas; add to flour mixture with the milk, egg and oil, all at once.

(Optional: Stir in raisins or nuts if desired).

Lightly grease muffin pan well, or use paper muffin cups and don’t grease the pan. Fill cups ¾ way full, or until all cups are evenly distributed. Bake in oven at 400degrees for 18 minutes or until golden brown and springy to the touch. Makes 12

INGREDIENTS 1 c. wheat flour 1 c. white flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 2 tsp. sugar ½ tsp. cream of tarter (makes them so fluffy) ¼ tsp. salt ½ c. butter, softened 2/3 c. milk 1 c. shredded chedder cheese 1 c. uncooked sausage

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 450gdegrees.

In a large bowl, stir together both flours, salt, baking powder, cr. of tartar and sugar. (If you usa a whisk, it will mix more thoroughly.)

Cut in the butter using a fork until crumbly. Add cheese and sausage and mix until just blended. Make a well in the center and add the milk all at once. Stir with a strong spoon until dough sticks together.

With floured hands, scoop 1 tbsp. of mixture and roll between palms, forming balls. Place on cookie sheet ¾ inch apart.

Bake for 10-14 minutes or until browned.

(Make sure they’re cooked thoroughly; they contain pork!)

Makes approx. 30 cheese balls.

Surf Etiquette first rule:

1) First Surfer up, closest to the curl has the right of way.

These are the signs posted in our area of the country, and I would assume the rule #1 would apply for both men and women.

about getting run over by other surfers. I kept waiting for an easy wave to come, but all the waves that came didn’t break at all... At least I had some good practice paddling, turning around, and paddling out some more.

eeks before my first trip to Hawaii I was already mentally surfing. I was so fortunate to go to Waikiki with my entrepreneur boyfriend/partner, Erik Nordskog, who’s a lifelong surfer. Erik got hooked on surfing in Waikiki when he was a kid and now it was my turn to get hooked.

The main reason for our trip to Hawaii was to introduce our new product line for surfers and paddlers, Xtreme Cream by ON IT PRO, at the New Product Expo. It’s a bottom coating for surfboards, which gives you more performance and speed by reducing friction by over 15%. There was no better place to demonstrate the benefits of Xtreme Cream and to learn to surf than Waikiki.

On my flight to Hawaii I read the article on beginner tips and tricks in the WSSM Winter issue, so I was emotionally prepared to surf the waves of Hawaii. We were in one of the most famous surfing spots in the world, and Erik promised to teach me how to surf.

On the first day we rented two soft surfboards. The guy attending to the boards wanted to give me a board with a lot of dings on it. I know dings create drag, something I learned from Erik, so I chose a board that had very few dings. We grabbed our boards and walked carefully into the warm tropical blue water. Even though there’s a lot of soft sand on the beach, I was happy to be wearing booties to protect my feet from the reef. As we got deeper we started paddling out and I tried to follow the leader as much as possible by carefully observing Erik’s every move. I could feel I didn’t have the balance or control that he did. Since I’m a Yoga instructor my balance on the ground is excellent, but I had to learn proper techniques for balancing on top of a surfboard in the ocean. I was eager to learn the tricks of staying on the board and catching the best waves from an expert. It takes a lot of practice to learn to even sit on a board!

After a while of going back and forth, I was getting tired so we decided to paddle over to another spot. I followed Erik to the bigger break with lots of surfers. I was worried about how to stay clear from the expert surfers, out of control beginners, and the outrigger canoes with tourists on them, as I didn’t want to get in the way or hurt. While it was flat, we paddled through to the other side where I was safe from harm.

Erik would tell me which waves were going to break so I could get ready for the approaching wave. He gave my board a push from behind whenever a good wave came and I tried to paddle as hard as I could, but it felt as if I was paddling through molasses. I couldn’t move my arms fast enough through the water to get enough speed, but with only one hour left to go before the surfboard had to be returned I was determined to keep going, even though I was getting frustrated and the water was getting saltier with every wave I tried to catch. At this point I didn’t know if I could really catch a wave or not.

I didn’t have a long board like most of the beginners in the water, so I couldn’t catch as many waves as they did, but as I watched all sorts of surfers zip by, it gave me motivation that I could do it too. When I finally caught my first wave I was so excited and raised my arms up in exhilaration while riding it!.

I quickly made my way back into position and caught another wave and that made me even more excited- until, as I was walking through the water to get back into position again, I hit my shin on the reef, very hard. It was so incredibly painful and all my nerves were screaming. I normally don’t feel pain so quickly and strongly so it was shocking to feel so much pain so intensely. But in true surfer fashion, I got over it because time was running out and I wanted to catch more waves. I got into position again and waited for the next good wave to approach.

As the wave came, I only paddled a little bit this time when I felt the wave take me for a ride. I was amazed that I was moving forward so fast and so effortlessly. This was a perfect opportunity to see if I’m more comfortable with my left or right foot in front, but in the end I still wasn’t sure.

I caught a couple more amazing waves that made me very happy, however, I still needed to avoid other beginner surfers who were getting in my way. After waiting for more waves, but none coming, time ran out.

I let the swells carry me back to the shore and Erik helped me take the surf board back to the rental shop.

After two hours I came out of the water with some bruises and a scrape on my shin in the shape of the Hawaiian Islands. The scrape was an awesome souvenir from my first surfing experience.

I was surprised that I didn’t feel the gravity weighing me down when I came back to the land. In fact, I felt invigorated. My first lesson was a success and I can’t wait to go surfing again - especially in the warm waters of Waikiki. In the mean time, I’ll be surfing in the cold waters of Southern California. u

M

y heart beat heavily as we walked past Ehukai Beach lifeguard stand and headed towards Gas Chambers. The swell was on the rise, almost double overhead and with me being a whole 5’ tall and about 105 pounds, on the north shore, that’s big enough for me.

For those of you that are familiar with Oahu’s north shore, you know that this particular area, from Waimea to Sunset, is the proving ground for surfers worldwide and that the ocean can and will teach you life lessons here within seconds if you’re not careful. So not only does wave size matter, wave conditions, winds, tides and other surfers in the lineup are all determining factors as to whether you’re in for a great session or about to get your entire body and ego worked.

Though we’d been surfing here for 7 months or so, I was still getting used to shortboarding after having ridden mostly funshapes for the past 6 years, meaning I wasn’t used to duck-diving but rather turtle rolling my board- but at this stretch of beach, it’s imperative that you duck-dive in order to reach the outside.

Gas Chambers wasn’t spitting barrels that day but the heavy north swells had pounded the sand over the reef, forming the sandbar on the inside which transforms Gas Chambers into a super heavy wave that can push you deep into the reef and boulders below if you happen to get stuck on the inside, as well as the ever-present west bound current that grabs you and sends you sailing alongside the beach as you try to paddle out, making you look like a complete beginner since you have to duck-dive constantly just to make it to the outside. The current on the inside is insane and if you aren’t careful, you can be swept down to the lifeguard stand or in my worst nightmares, to Pipe! Now wouldn’t that be embarrassing.

Now, my duck-diving skills leave something to be desired… ok, a LOT to be desired – though I am getting better, so I was feeling particularly nervous about the paddle out on this day. There isn’t much of a channel to talk about on the bigger days, at least not if you’re used to the south shore where you ALWAYS have a channel, but if you time the sets right and don’t give up, you can make it to the outside where you’re able to sit back, relax and wait for your set. Usually.

Dan and I made our way further down the beach and sat down to watch it for a few minutes. My heart sank as I looked upward at the beach access road, only to receive a knowing nod from the photographer sitting there… It was as if he could sense my nerves and was waiting for me to mess up, he’d have it all on digital.

Being a girl, and especially on such a flamboyant board (hot pink), I knew eyes would be on me as I paddled out into the mostly male lineup, and this time I was determined to make it out without flailing about or bailing my board and swimming under the sets.

We sat and watched for a bit and I tried to calm my heart rate by deep breathing.

It wasn’t the waves themselves that made me nervous… it was the paddle out! I can always catch waves once I’m out there and have a ball doing it, but it’s getting there that has been a struggle for me. What if I can’t make it out? What if I get washed down in front of the lifeguard stand (with the boulders on the inside!) and a guard has to come rescue me?

These self defeating thoughts raced through my head as we sat and counted the sets. They looked about 10 minutes apart for the BIG sets, with multiple smaller sets in between. Though the lulls weren’t really all that far apart, I knew if I timed it right, I could make it… and I was sure gonna try.

I saw another surfer walk down the beach and drop in, and though he was a guy and much stronger, I counted the seconds as he paddled and ducked his way to the outside. He passed through one set, then up and over the next incoming set, diving through multiple waves and suddenly he was out, in about 80 seconds. I can do that!

Dan was ready to go as we both saw the window of opportunity open after another big set rolled through, connecting Gas Chambers and Pupukea. We both prayed, he then kissed me and said... “You’ll be fine!

Remember... it’s only 80 seconds to the outside!”

With a big grin he dove in and I watched as the first set pounded on top of him.

He dove through and paddled on. This was my moment. I grabbed my board and headed out.

Heart pounding and breathing so hard from my inner excitement so that I could hardly think straight, I actually prayed out loud for strength as each wave crashed in front of me, paddling, paddling, paddling. Halfway there I looked around briefly for Dan to see where he was at. Neither of us had time to wave, but I knew he was somewhere close, however, I had to get myself out there first, then find my better half (he’s the better surfer too I must say).

Dark lines began to form on the near horizon as I told myself I was almost there… I could taste the outside, it was right there!!!

But sure enough, I wouldn’t be lucky enough to make it out in just one set. The dark lines jacked up in front of me and came down with a thunderous roar. This time I had to bail. I swam down and my ears tickled, the water pulled and swirled as I returned to the surface. Slipping quickly atop my board, I stuck to the deck and paddled with all my heart… I made it.

Laughing as I gasped for breath, sheer excitement and adrenalin pumped through every cell in my body as I realized once again, this is what living life is all about. It’s the thrill of overcoming odds and

conquering fears. It’s about doing what you know is dangerous yet trusting God to see you through. I believe He meant for us to ride waves because the experience gained from all aspects of surfing translates so brilliantly into other aspects of our lives.

Never give up. That’s what surfing means to me… even if it takes more than 80 seconds to reach the outside! u

Its funny how alone you really are out there, as much as someone may have your back, it’s you and you alone that has to determine how to survive out in the ocean, and it’s up to you to follow through.

APPLYING BLUE GOO ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY POWER CLEANER:

FOR USE ON: Surfboards, Paddle boards, Ocean Canoes (OC1, OC2, OC4, OC6) and Kayaks, K1, K4, K6 boats, Racing Skulls, Wind surfers, Kite boards, Jet Ski’s etc. Use to clean, restore and replenish surface.

1) For surfboards, remove wax build-up with plastic scraper.

Remaining wax residue will be removed

by Blue Goo.

2) Apply liberally with damp sponge or cloth. Blue Goo will prep the surface for Xtreme Cream by cleaning it of wax, dirt, salt, grime and scuff marks. Blue Goo has a light grit which will clean but will not damage the surface.

3) Rinse off or rub out with soft cloth. For best results, let dry to haze then buff with soft cloth.

CAUTION: MAY REMOVE PAINT, CLEAR COAT OR DECALS. TEST IN A SMALL, INCONSPICUOUS SPOT FIRST.

APPLYING XTREME CREAM:

For optimum performance on new boards and rigs; Use3 Blue Goo Power Cleaner per instructions for a quick wipe down.

Rinse and dry. This will prep the surface for the 1 application of Xtreme Cream High Performance Coating 1) Shake bottle. Use damp sponge or soft cloth to apply; squeeze product liberally onto surface and buff in a circular motion. (bottom only for surfboards because Wax will not stick and deck will be too slick to stand on)! Rub in as much as needed to fully coat surface. Xtreme Cream can be applied and rubbed out with a buffer (use lambs wool or soft cloth) for maximum bonding.

2) Cover entire bottom, fins and rails for surfboards or apply to select areas to enhance performance. Can be applied to decks and entire rigs to keep them looking clean and new. Salt water will not stick to Xtreme Cream giving you an easy clean up!

3) Let dry to haze. Air temperature determines the drying time. However, you can wipe off immediately or leave on overnight for best results. The longer it sits, the better Xtreme Cream bonds.

Xtreme Cream’s exotic polymer starts bonding from the moment it’s applied and completely cures in approximately two weeks time.

4) Rub out with soft cloth, making sure all Xtreme Cream residue is removed.

Use buffer for optimum shine and performance. Instantly, you’ll see and feel the difference!

u “Tip 1. For first time surfers: relax, look where

you are going, “keep your head up” and keep those knees bent. If you do those things, then foot placement becomes a little less important.

As you progress and move down to smaller boards you’ll need to have some muscle memory, so for foot placement, go home and get some masking tape. In the beginning, place a tape lengthwise, that will be your imaginary board’s center line, then put a piece of tape perpendicular at about your ribcage and another piece of tape also perpendicular to your first one- about shoulder length back from the first one. Then practice popping up, landing your feet in the same place every time.

HINT: If you have a mirror, it’s even better because you don’t want to look down at all. If you look down and check your feet every time then it goes into your muscle memory and that will be how you surf and we don’t want that, so try to look ahead as much as possible.

Practice this 20-25 times a day for a while. If you mess up correct it immediately. Practice this enough times and you’ll find getting your feet in the right spot out in the surf will be a breeze.

As A.W. Tozer once said, “Though my fire is not large, it is real, and there may be those who can light their candle at its flame.”

T

he vision started with one person speaking life into me. It has now spread to thousands and thousands of girls all over the world, speaking life into the girls in their own communities.

After writing a six-session life coaching study called, You’re Designed to Shine, I began to gather girls in beach communities all over the world and encourage them on their journeys. During one of these events, I looked at the girls all spread out along the edge of the ocean as they were using a starfish we gave them to write their dreams in the sand.

I was smiling to myself thinking how much I love seeing girls get excited about their lives, go after their dreams and be all that they can be. There were so many girls that needed to be encouraged. That’s when it hit me. ANYONE can do what I was doing! I then wrote a Leaders Guide that easily walks girls ages 8-88 through the steps to gather their own group of girls in their own communities and lead them through the six chapters. This can be done as a one-day event, a weekend retreat or once a week for six weeks.

What is something that has been a challenge to you that you have overcome? Being a single mother, I wouldn’t say I have overcome because it is always a challenge, however having God by my side makes the hard times a whole lot easier.

What is your occupation: I own and operate a surf travel business in Barbados. I set up surf trips for people wanting to surf in Barbados. I do accommodations, airport transfers, car rentals, surfboard rentals, surf lessons, surf tours..pretty much a bit of everything.

A BIGGER DREAM of mine that I’ve had for a long time, and that I am now working on...

Is to create a place where people from all over the world and all walks of life can come and experience not only the beautiful waves that Barbados has to offer, but experience the culture and people that make Barbados a special place.

I would like to provide more than a place to sleep: I want to make it a place that offers guests comfort, relaxation, and rejuvenation, and have them enjoy these things not only because of the physical aspects of the accommodations, but by the Heart, Life, and Light that fills its walls... a home where friends are made, laughter is had, and experiences are never forgotten.

For the last 4 years I have been organizing surf trips for surfers who want to visit Barbados. I work with them through emails and phone calls to set everything up for them.

Airport transfers, car rentals, accommodations, surfboard rentals, surf tours, surf lessons, island tours and activities are all things taken care of by me. Everything to make their Barbados experience a great one.

Over the last 2 years, God has been speaking to me about Bajan Surf Bungalow and now more than ever I am BELIEVING it will happen. I also believe my experience over the last 4 years will greatly add to the success of the New Bajan Surf Bungalow.

My Dream...God’s Dream for my life...OUR Dream for my life. It started 14 years ago and today is a new beginning in pursuing this dream.

I’ve been putting it off saying to myself, “This is way too big a dream”, “It won’t happen, little me can’t do it all... has God really put this in my heart?”, but God had been showing me daily over the last few months to get my butt in gear and GO FOR IT! What is a meaningful symbol to you that you have learned from in nature, and what does it remind you of? A pearl. Do you know that one of the most precious and beautiful gems starts off as a simple grain of sand. The sand entering into the living membrane gives the oyster fits of irritation. The oyster coats the sand with Nacre and over time the layers build up and forms a pearl. WE are like the grain of sand when we come to God. He takes us as we are and through the troubles and challenges of our lives(the irritations), He coats us with His grace and love and we become like a beautiful pearl. Admirable and valuable.

How are you using You’re Designed to Shine to reach out to girls in your local community? Over two summers, I have held 4 weeks of Surf and Shine camp where we do “You’re Designed To Shine” lessons in the mornings at my house and then head to the beach for afternoon surfing fun.

So far, over 80 girls have attended Surf and Shine!

Why did you step out to make a difference? This life isn’t easy, our hearts are tender, we are easily hurt, and we go through hard times, everybody does. I get great joy out of sharing what God has done for me, and how Awesome He is. We don’t have to be alone, God is there to help us through. He gives us dreams for our lives that are so great and I like young girls to realize there is a wonderful plan for their life.

What is the most rewarding gift you get from giving light to other girls? For some of these girls, their dream is to learn to surf, so seeing them get up and ride a wave is a great gift!

If you were standing in front of thousands of girls who were coming up the road behind you, what would you say to them to encourage them along their way?

You are all beautiful, and unique. Each one of you are treasured and loved more than you can comprehend, you were made for so much more than the troubles and hurts of this world. Keep looking up and He will guide you all the days of your life. Live your dreams and don’t settle for a life of mediocrity. Go after the impossible, because with God all things are possible.

What do you love about surfing? I love being able to spend time with friends out in the water. The ocean is a place where I can be carefree and have fun. There is nothing like the feeling of the sunshine, the ocean, and riding clean small waves.

What do you do for fun? Play music, fish, travel, surf, wakeboard, cook, go to beach, write, read poetry, spend time with friends & family, anything creative.

Who is your “Pod”? MMy husband Nic, my mom, my dad, my family, and all of my Outer Banks friends. I also have a global pod that I’ve met from my travels!! Thank goodness for the internet and skype.

Who has been a pearl to you? My husband Nic always encourages and inspires me in my music and in all that I do. My mom has always been my best friend, my role model, and encourager. Also, my mam, and my close girlfriends(Corissa, Buffy, & Whitney). So many people have touched my life in one way or another.

What is something that has been a challenge to you that you’ve overcome? My mom got pregnant with me in high school at 16. My dad battled substance abuse and couldn’t hold it together. At an early age I watched him abuse my mom and was constantly fearful of my environment. This cultivated a pattern of putting up walls and pretending like everything was fine in order to cope. My parents divorced when I turned 6 and my dad moved across the country, leaving my brother and me rejected. This was a huge obstacle that took a long time to overcome. I struggled with much insecurity and am still learning to let my guard down and be who God made me.

My own self-image is another battle I’ve had to overcome. I struggled with excessive dieting and exercising in order to satisfy the extreme expectations I placed on myself. I strived to be beautiful and in the process lost all of my joy. It took me a long time to realize that true beauty can only come from the inside out. If I focus on being a beautiful person on the inside, then I will radiate beauty outwardly. I wrote the song “Beautiful” from this experi-

ence, and I still consistently get emails about how the song inspires and relates to girls going through the same struggles. Therefore, I’m thankful that I went through this journey in order to help others.

What is a meaningful symbol to you that you have learned from in nature? Birds. They choose to sing a melody that echoes through creation.

And I believe that those who wish to sing will always find a song.

How are you using “You’re Designed to Shine” to reach out to girls in your local community? It has been amazing to travel and shine love for others through my music. However, I also feel it’s important to be involved in my local community, the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This last year, I traveled with a group of teenagers to Guyana, South America. On the trip, I was able to connect with all of the girls. It reignited the desire of my heart, to be an encouraging pearl to the younger generation.

When we returned, I had a good friend approach me about joining her to encourage local girls. The first thought that came through my mind was Christina’s “You’re Designed to Shine” study. The first night twelve girls showed up.

The next week, it doubled. I was blown away at the girl’s willingness and honesty in sharing. Each one seemed to take hold of the life lessons, responding in such a vulnerable and genuine manner. They opened up about abuse, family struggles, identity issues, insecurities, and personal confessions. It was a safe environment that allowed them to let go of the many issues they were facing in their lives. I could see the excitement in their eyes each week as they began to find their dreams, shape their identities, and find purpose amidst their circumstance.

When I think of our weekly time together, a few words come to mind: freedom, encouragement, faith, and direction. The study was such

a hit, that we are going to begin another group study in the fall. The girls seemed so blessed, but I am truly convinced that the six weeks of this study blessed me just as much as them. There is no greater feeling than touching the lives of someone else. This is my purpose, this is my dream. Shining bright for others in this difficult world we live in. Going through struggles, overcoming them, and then encouraging another in return.

What is the most rewarding gift you get for giving light to others? Hearing stories of how my music has related to other girls is the most rewarding thing! To see how my struggles can be expressed and recorded through music and in turn inspire others makes the hardships so worth it!!

If you were standing in front of thousands of girls who were coming behind you, what would you say to them to encourage them along their way? No matter what you are going through, never lose hope. God is with you and longs to walk this journey alongside of you. You are beautiful just the way you are. Don’t try so hard to fit into the world’s mold of beauty. Be unique and shine with the special gifts that only you possess! He has a plan for you that will blow your mind! If you begin to let the Lord inside your heart, He will direct and guide you through this life, bringing joy and purpose!!! So begin SHINING BRIGHT today!

that she likes to stand up paddle, longboard and shortboard, all equally, but since the waves were still good she was going to surf her shortboard.

She led me out to baby Queens, her favorite surf break. This 6 yr. old girl paddled directly out to the line up and instructed me to stop. She then proceeded to take off on every wave she went for. So to not be shown up by a 6 yr. old, I started paddling for a few of the waves that came

through. “Aunty you have to wait for the right waves,” the brighteyed 6 yr. old told me. “Then you have to stand up when the wave pushes you, not before then or your board will not get into the wave.”

Wow…that is all I have to say! My surf instructor took off on wave after wave, and I sat on my board in awe of her.

“Don’t worry aunty; I have been surfing since I was three.” Tiki tells me as she paddles back out to me.

Tiki Willis

“In Waikiki on a Sunday morning, I had the chance to surf with a very special little girl.

Next to the Star Beach Boys tent, where her father Alika Willis works on the weekends, I found Tiki Willis playing with the other Waikiki groms in the sand. It was a beautiful Sunday, light winds and a lingering south swell. Tiki’s mom, Dina Willis, a surf instructor for Faith Surf School, told me that “Tiki’s birthday was December 16, 2003 and that she was a water baby from the start.” As if to prove her mom right, Tiki came right up to me and insisted that we go surfing together.

She grabbed her 6’2 Koa Board Sport board, and led me to the waters edge. When we were putting our leashes on, Tiki proceeded to tell me

While we were sitting and waiting for the right wave, Tiki started squeaking and squawking… “I am Natiri” she tells me, “from Avatar, my favorite movie.” She likes to play Avatar all the time. I have to say that Tiki had me giggling, and grinning the entire time we were in the water. Her sparkling personality is contagious. She waved and said “Hi” to all of the instructors and kids in the water. She even stopped next to a 7 yr. old girl whose mom was pushing her into waves, and gave the girl some encouraging pointers!

Tiki has 2 older step-brothers. One is 18, and the other is 16, but they are teenagers and not around all that much. She fills her spare time surfing with boogie boarding, skate boarding, and drawing. Her family lives on the outskirts of Waikiki and she’ll be a first grader next fall. This soon to be first grader is already sponsored by Honey Girl Water Wear for bathing suits, Kaimana stand up paddle boards for her SUP, and Koa Boards for her shortboards and longboards. Tiki has been competing in SUP, shortboarding, and longboarding.

After our second surf session, I was spent. Tiki was sitting next to me singing, and she stopped suddenly and whispered into her mother’s ear.

Grinning from ear to ear she asks me to go with her to Yogurt Land, her favorite snack spot in Waikiki. As we filled up on Coconut yogurt covered in Oreo cookie pieces and chocolate sprinkles, Tiki asked if I would surf with her again next week. I had to smile. I felt so special that this wonderful, talented 6 yr. old wanted to spend more time with me in the ocean.

She told me next time she would show me how to SUP. I had to laugh, my little surf instructor wanted to teach me how to SUP. I think it goes without saying that we should expect to see great things in the future from this wonderfully talented, young water girl. I personally look forward to watching her surf career blossom and progress.” u

Here is her story. ”…On February 10, 2000 I was in an automobile accident while I was in college up in Utah. I was a passenger and a car failed to yield to us while they were turning. My aorta ruptured in that accident and I got an ischemic injury. The blood and oxygen was cut off and it killed the nerves in my spine and paralyzed me. Yes, before my accident I was a surfer. I loved to be in the water and I surfed all the time I could. I’m not really sensitive on the subject… I don’t really talk about it too much since I don’t really see a difference between me and others until someone points it out.”

ADVISE FOR OTHERS LEARNING TO SURF? Go with people you love and be careful of who you listen to...oh and it helps to know how to hold your breath!

ARE YOU INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY? IF SO, HOW? Absolutely! I am just a part of the whole.

I stay active in volunteering my time to non-profit orgs like... ILW, DOH (NEUROTRAUMA ADVISORY BOARD), rehab of the pacific, and of course church service. I am a strong believer in service. It helps me step out of my world and share the talents that God gave me with others.

wave pushing me and feeling the drop, going in was not an option. After that experience, I lived and loved getting in the water every day I could. I actually come from a legacy of women surfers. My mother and grandmother surfed in the days when there were very few women surfers. They left a legacy in my family that empowered me to surf. I guess you could say that being in the water and on the waves is in my blood.

Inspiration comes from so many sources...

but the most influential inspiration is my grandmother. She was a surfer and an accomplished swimmer. She taught me the importance of striving to be the best I can in all I do.

Even after surviving a stroke and brain surgery in the 70’s she still was strong and strived to be the best she could be in and out of the water. She inspired me to work toward my potential and show gratitude to those who helped me along the way.

WHAT IS IT INSIDE THAT DRIVES YOU TO KEEP SURFING? A SPORT THAT OTHERS IN YOUR SITUATION WOULDN’T THINK OF TRYING! Knowing that there is someone like me out there that does not think she can surf makes me go on and reach for the next level. My goal is to show people that it can be done so come out and try.

WE ALL HAVE FEARS AND DOUBTS IN LIFE, WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST OBSTACLE IN SURFING AND HOW HAVE YOU OVERCOME IT? The biggest obstacle with surfing is by far “access to the beach” and getting over the fact that I think I can do it all myself. The fact is that I probably could do it myself but it is a whole lot easier and enjoyable sharing the experience with someone else. It fulfills two vital needs, service and gratitude. Looking to my foundation has always helped me overcome obstacles.

My foundation consists of having faith in Christ and all he stands for, learning all I can and having a sense of humor when I make a mistake.

NAME 3 THINGS THAT MAKE YOU LAUGH? 1. People that think my life is worse than theirs because I am in a chair.

2. My family and friends 3. The thought that I am actually surfing and living my wildest dream.

FAVORITE GRINDS AFTER SURF? Everything tastes better after a killer surf session but I’m pretty happy with a great sandwich, a peanut butter granola bar and a ton of water.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE INVENTED FOR THE WOMENS SURF MARKET THAT ISN’T OUT THERE YET?

CLOSING THOUGHTS? Surfing is much more to me than a sport, it is a lifestyle that encompasses my spiritual, physical, mental, social and emotional wellbeing. It helps balance my life in a world that seems to have little balance. My future has some contests and hopefully the ASP world tour in it. u

Artistic Passion Expressed An interview with

MESA ENTERPRISES founder & designer, Melissa Matarese

W

hen did I begin? I began surfing when I moved to New Zealand (NZ) in 2004...

I am a true lover of the outdoors and wanted to live somewhere that I could surf and snowboard in the same day. I decided that NZ was the place to be. I learned to surf in Raglan, NZ on a beat up 9’0 Bic.

My favorite pieces that I’ve designed thus far are: New Zealand Tree This piece is a strong example of my pen and ink work /watercolor combination. I believe that my love for nature and my surroundings really shows through in this painting.

4 Seasons | This piece is a great example of my intricate line work and is the original painting used for our most popular print, “Tree of life”.

Mesa | This piece is a self portrait depicting not only my physical attributes, but also a representation of my personality.

I began drawing and sketching at a very young age. As I reached junior high school, I found myself quickly excelling in my art classes, winning awards and being asked to enter regional contests. I was encouraged by my family, especially my Uncle Brian, who is an artist as well. My inspiration is driven by the everyday, natural beauty of this world. It is seen in the trees we walk past daily, the wonders of wildlife untouched by man, and the beauty of the human form. I feel that my style is best known for its intricate pen and ink work.

I had always dreamed of being an artist… creating all day through painting, sculpting and sketching. But it was quickly brought to my attention that this was not a practical way to make a living. I also believed this would be a somewhat selfish lifestyle and that does not reflect who I am as a person. I began to brainstorm a marketable way to use my creativity while passing on a positive message. I wanted to take my art off of the wall and into the everyday lives of people. Thus the process was created… follow my passion …stick to my roots… paint and use nature as my inspiration. I would simplify that painting down to a graphic and print it using earth-friendly inks on earth-friendly garments.

Industry blunders? When I made the shift to solely working with earth-friendly products, I was unaware of the extra heating and processing time required to cure alternative inks. I found the ink was fading after multiple washes in the first batch of shirts. I quickly learned that in order to properly cure the ink, the garments needed to be run through the dryer 3- 4 times instead of once with standard oil based ink. I won’t make that mistake again!

The biggest obstacle I’ve encountered is getting my name “out there” and marketing my product. As a small company with a small budget, this is an extremely difficult industry to break into. It is my hope that the action sport industry is going to begin focusing more on independent artists who stay true to their roots and project a positive message, instead of most shops selling the same 5 brands.

I create 2 collections each year. There is a spring/summer line, which is introduced in January, followed by a fall/winter line, introduced in August. The idea behind my product is to make earth-friendly wears for the everyday person. Although my product is higher in quality, it is still affordable. I am mindful of the fact that cost is an issue in the eco-fashion world. I think it’s wonderful in theory, but reality is that the average American consumer between the ages of 17-35 simply can’t afford it. Therefore, my products range from $18-$50 per piece.

As for community involvement, I believe it is important to stay connected in the community. Therefore, Mesa offers discounted graphic design services to all non-profit and fellow earth-friendly businesses. In addition, 5% of all Mesa Eco Apparel & Accessories profits are donated to Conservational International.

Looking forward, Mesa will continue to grow brand recognition and popularity within the industry while staying true to its roots and being more than a clothing line. It will become a way of life, connecting individuality to Mother Earth and community.

(World Health Organization) statistics claim that sea surf (foam) can account for an added 25% of harmful rays; dry beach sand reflects a further 15% and even on a cloudy day as much as 80% of the sun’s UV radiation can penetrate the clouds.

What we’re not all that enthused about however, is that UV sun radiation is known to be the major cause of irreparable damage to the skin. Damage such as premature aging, discoloration, sun spots, deep wrinkles and skin cancer are dangers we KNOW we all face. Even when out surfing on a cloudy day, covered in a wetsuit, those two things alone do not prevent sun radiation from reaching exposed facial areas.

If we want our skin to be healthy and beautiful, we HAVE to take care of it throughout our entire lifetime, not just when we’re young and vibrant. If we fail in this area, our skin will certainly show it.

We can all agree that pre-mature aging is the LAST thing that we want to happen, especially with the hours of water time ahead of us that we’re looking forward to—after all, it’s not like we’re going to stop surfing or enjoying the beach, right? So instead, we need to find a way to combat the sun’s harmful effects, while staying protected and IN the water!

I taught myself how to surf, actually. All my friends in Hawaii surfed, so I wanted to join in. One of my friends who really got me into surfing was Jamie Obrien, who I still surf with. He is always pushing the limits and is so fun to surf with. In the beginning, I actually learned to surf on a boogie board, and then moved onto a BZ soft top, and then onto a shortboard. It was my dream to be a pro surfer, and I also feel it’s my destiny. There was never a question of what else I was going to do.

The first surf break I really mastered is a little spot called “Shores” on the inside of Sunset Beach. It was a mellow, short wave, and never got too big, so it was never scary or threatening to surf. As far as the first surf trick I’ve mastered… definitely my bottom turn; I still think that is the most important maneuver in surfing, since mastering a bottom turn is key to learning any turns. The hardest surf trick to master and that I’m still learning is definitely airs. I’m still trying to master those, just by trial and error, and also by watching surf videos.

My first sponsor was HIC. I was approached by the team manager at the time, and they asked me if I wanted to be a part of the team… they were so cool! As for modeling, I just kind of fell into it. I never thought I’d be a model or anything. It just happened to work out with my sponsors as they began using me for promotional things. It definitely has helped me in my career. I would say I get seen by more people, and also people can identify me with my sponsors, which is a bonus for all involved. ... continued next page

THEN THERE WAS PRO SURFING...

The pros and cons of pro surfing are definitely there. I would say it’s a dream job, because I get to surf for a living, and go on surf trips. Some of the cons to it would be that there is pressure to be the BEST, do really well in contests, look a certain way, and also not have any off-days.

Many sports athletes have rituals such as “no washing the socks”, “use the same jersey!” before a big game, and things like that.

As a surfer, when preparing for a contest, I definitely try not to stay up late before the event, getting a minimum of 9 hours of sleep! Very important, I feel.

As a pro surfer, my sponsors expect me to be a good role model, and an outstanding member in the surfing community. Being positive in life will get you far, I’ve learned.I’m currently sponsored by Airwalk, Old Spice, Rusty Surfboards, and Oam. They’re all awesome guys! Airwalk is one of my newer sponsors; they are a really cool company, and we just fit really well together… it’s an organic fit! My favorite Airwalk shoe is definitely the classic “Rio” casual. Love ‘em! This past spring I won the Women’s Pipeline Pro in Hawaii. I was a bit nervous surfing this spot, but I had been training hard, surfing it day in and day out, all of the good days in the winter, so I felt better prepared on the day of the contest. It is so hard to catch a lot of waves out there when it’s good; it gets so crowded, so it was definitely cool to have it with only 3 other girls out. My heart raced with excitement just thinking about it, and definitely on the last day of the waiting period, too. Every day leading up to it was like Groundhog Day, wake up, check the waves, check the call, and it was never on. The last day of the holding period I knew it was going to be the day, and it was going to be a long one. Being out there all winter helped so much, and I was so happy to win. Jamie Obrien called and congratulated me and said “welcome to the club!” I have accomplished a lot of things in my surfing career, but winning at a spot like Pipeline is really special!Have I ever been scared just paddling out at a break? Not so much in contests, but in free surfing…

I have definitely been scared. I just try not to let myself get overwhelmed, and focus on relaxing.

ON BEING A ROLE MODEL AND INDUSTRY LEADER...

As a pro surfer, lots of young girls look up to you as a role model, and it makes me feel proud to do my part. I wish growing up I had more positive role models to look up to, such as athletes that I thought were really cool. I am glad people are able to see what I do, and that I can be a role model for the next generation as well.I’m no Lindsay Lohan (haha!), so I don’t really feel trapped by the fame so far, and the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me about my surfing career was that I’ve had longevity.

I’ve been around for a while competing, so that was nice to hear.

Sometimes a sponsor can present their rider in ads/content/etc., that doesn’t match their personality. But that has NOT been the case with me. I am not a fake person; I don’t put on a front, and so what you see is what you get. Magazines sometimes like to twist quotes, and make things seem more interesting than they are, but that’s just the magazines.

Staying positive and thankful for everything in my life is one of my future and ongoing goals, and I’d love to be remembered in life as a good role model, and a positive person! wSSm | womenssurfstyle.com | 115

ON THE WOMENS SURFING INDUSTRY...

I attribute the growth in the women’s surf industry to movies like Blue Crush, and TV shows like Surf Girls. I think they showed surfing in a positive light, and showed that a girl can be cute, yet be an awesome surfer at the same time. Of course, we could always use MORE support in the main surf magazines for girls. A company I feel has stepped it up and supported is definitely Roxy; they were the first girls surf brand to really support women’s surfing and the lifestyle. Thanks Roxy!

As for women surfers that I feel have gone above and beyond in changing women’s surfing, it would probably be Lisa Anderson. She was the first face of women’s surfing in the modern times. She was a great personality, and a great surfer. u

Who taught you to surf and do you still surf with them?

I was completely self-taught. When I was 12 and 13 I used to go to the beach in the summer and flop around on a boogie board.

I would see surfers and think that riding waves while standing up looked like a lot more fun. I asked my mom if I could start surfing and she said no- “surfing is for boys. You should be on the beach looking cute in a bikini, not out competing with them. You’ll never get a boyfriend that way!”

A year or so later, I found an old surfboard that belonged to my uncle in the rafters of my grandparent’s garage. I begged my mom to let me bring it home, but she said no. It took another year of begging till she finally relented but the board was big, heavy and old and not easy to learn on. I saved up babysitting money and bought a surfboard and wetsuit at a garage sale and then it was all trial and error from there.

Little by little, I eventually figured it out.

What kind of board did you learn on? My uncle’s board was an old 70’s 7’0” super thick board with two little fins right on the end of the tail. The board I got at the garage sale was a 6’0” 80’s T&C surfboard quad.

As a little girl, did you always dream of being a pro surfer, and does that dream match reality? When I first started surfing, I never had any thought of going pro. I had only been surfing for 2 years when I graduated high school and while I had won some contests in NSSA, I just never thought I was good enough.

First surf trick you ever learned? The first surf “trick” I learned was how to duckdive. That was tricky at first.

Hardest surf trick to master for you personally, and how you did it? Backside tube riding was always my Achilles heel. In tubes, I would just always ignore the rights and go left. A few years ago I started trying to push it and just go on every right I could, but one morning at my home beach break I took off on a right and the backwash hit me and sent me headfirst straight into the sand. I heard my neck crack and I was just underwater going, “Am I ok? Can I feel my toes?” I didn’t break anything, but it scared me and made me more timid. Eventually, that wore off and I started going for it again and eventually gained back my confidence.

How old were you when you got your first sponsor and how did it all come about? I was 16 and had only been surfing for about a year. I was one of three girls on my high school surf team, but was the highest ranked out of the three. One of the other girls heard a rumor that Rusty was looking for girls to sponsor. We put together a portfolio with bios for each of us and photos of us surfing and hanging out and sent it in. A few months later the people at Rusty called.

I went down there thinking it was a surf trip, not realizing they had invited me as a model.

I had a boardshort tan and scabby knees from skateboarding and the other girls all had fake tans and nails...

It wasn’t until my first year in college at UCSD that I went on a photo trip for SG magazine to Puerto Escondido. Former World Champ Freida Zamba was there along with WCT surfer Prue Jeffries, WQS surfer Falina Spires, and young Kristin Quizon. They were all better surfers than me, but I realized that there wasn’t as big of a gap between us as I had thought.

After the trip they were going to Australia for the next contest and I was going back to sit in lecture halls. At that point I decided that I wanted to be a pro surfer and I started taking extra units and summer school in order to graduate as soon as possible and pursue it. I ended up finishing in 3 years with a degree in psychology, won the Open Division of NSSA Nationals & officially turned pro from there.

What was the first surf break that you felt you really mastered and what did it break like? I can’t say that I have any surf break mastered. There is always room for improvement.

They said they weren’t interested in sponsoring us, but were glad we liked their product enough to send in the portfolio and offered to let us go down to the office and pick up a box of clothes.

It happened to be summer and both of the other two girls were on extended family vacations, so I went down to pick up the box of t-shirts and boardshorts. While I was there they asked me to try on a bikini. They then invited me to go on a photo shoot to Cabo. I begged my mom to let me go, and somehow she agreed.

I went down there thinking it was a surf trip, not realizing they had invited me as a model. I had a boardshort tan and scabby knees from skateboarding and the other girls all had fake tans and nails. We did some photos and I felt a little out of place. One morning all the guys were going surfing and I asked to go along. They had a board for me to ride and once they saw I could surf too, they decided to sponsor me. I’ve ridden Rusty surfboards ever since!

What’s the funniest product you’ve been asked to represent and did you do it? That’s a great question. I’ve represented Coast

Bodywash, Silver Joes Coffee, and Betty Belts, but the funniest product is actually Bravo Condoms! They contacted me via myspace about sponsorship and at first I wasn’t sure I wanted to be associated with a condom company. Then they explained that they wanted to sponsor me because I have a clean image and am a good role model and they want to spread the message that condoms are cool and girls are just as responsible for safe sex as guys are. Just being on the pill doesn’t mean you’re having safe sex. So that was a message I could believe in and want to spread. Still, it’s pretty funny having a sticker for a condom company on my board!

Explain how you felt (joy, excitement, nervousness) when you first officially became a pro surfer and what that meant to you at the time. Did you get a phone call? Was it earth shattering? Or did you simply “drift/surf” into the position?

I guess technically, it was a phone call probably when my first sponsor offered to pay me some money, but I don’t even remember it.

I feel more like I became a pro surfer little by little. I started getting a few dollars from sponsors and I won some money in contests, so technically I was a pro surfer when that started, but I didn’t really feel like a “pro” until I graduated college and was earning enough money to live and travel around the world doing contests.

It was definitely exciting. It is always gratifying to have something that you’ve worked for come to fruition. I would feel proud when someone asked me what I did and responded, “I’m a pro surfer”.

I never had a lot of confidence growing up, I was really shy, and turning pro made me feel “cool”.

What is the lifestyle of a pro surfer like? There are a lot of

different ways to be a pro surfer. You could be a big wave surfer and spend your time looking at swell models for the place the next big swell will hit and then get on a plane to chase it. You could be a photo pro and focus on surfing in front of a photographer at a place with good light and an interesting backdrop. Or you could be a contest surfer and try to make sure you can rip in anything from one foot onshore slop to overhead perfection.

I started out worrying about contests. I would try to surf in all types of conditions. Surfing good waves is a lot easier than surfing in crap. So I tried to practice in overhead closeouts and one foot mushy slop, the type of surf that contests were usually run in. The lifestyle includes long flights, a lot of time in airports, hoping your surfboards show up on your flight, cramming into a hotel room and a rental car with way too many girls… That’s the downside, but it’s also exciting and those girls have become my best friends.

The first trip I ever made to France, and the first year I was on the tour is a good example.

My friend Nicole Grodesky and I went. We had looked at hotels on the internet, but everything was in French so we figured we’d just show up and find somewhere to stay. We arrived in the afternoon and made the one hour drive to the beach from the airport. We had dinner, checked the surf and then started looking for hotels.

Everything was booked!

We figured we might have to stay further from the beach and just drive in everyday, but even the hotels 30 min from the beach were booked. We ended up going all the way back to near the airport for one night, and then had to buy a tent. Even the campsites were all booked but one of the campground owners felt bad for us and gave us a place to camp.

It poured rain for days and there were noisy partying French college kids on summer vacation camping next door. It wasn’t the best conditions for getting a good night’s rest before a contest, but it was a trip I will never forget.

There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with the job of being a pro surfer... Give us some pros & cons of your occupation? The responsibility comes from being a good role model.

I turned down a sponsorship opportunity from a beer company because I didn’t think it fit with the image I wanted to portray.

After I was on the Boarding House TV show I even had an offer to pose for Playboy which I also turned down.

People will come up to me and want to chat and think that they know me because they saw me on tv. I’m shy by nature and not always in the mood to chat, but I try to be as friendly as possible. There are also a lot of photo shoots and autograph signings. The photo shoots can be fun sometimes, but it’s often either really cold and you’re in a bikini or really hot out and you’re in a fullsuit, just walking back and forth for the camera, trying to look natural.

I was in Portugal doing a photo shoot for the Portugese version of Maxim magazine. It was freezing cold out, everyone else was in jeans, sweaters, and beanies, but they had me kneeling in rocky sand in my bikini trying to get me

to wax my board in a sexy pose. Then they wanted me to jump into the water in just my bikini when I had been wearing a 4/3 and booties while surfing! I’ve gotten a lot better at it, but it is never my favorite part of the job.

Take us through a typical day for you in off-season? Off-season? There’s no off-season! The last contest of the year is in December and the first starts in January. I can talk you through a typical day at home. I get up early, around 5:30am, appreciate brushing my teeth in the tap water (unlike in Bali or Mexico or so many of the other places I go where you have to use bottled

water to brush your teeth), make one strong cup of coffee and get some work done on the internet, answering emails, blogging, writing a story or editing photos from my last trip, ride my Sector 9 down to the beach to check the surf. If it looks fun, I’ll put my wetsuit on at home and run down. After surfing, I’m doing laundry, buying plane tickets or packing for my next trip, shopping at Whole Foods for dinner, have a nice healthy dinner with my boyfriend and one good Belgian ale, then to bed around 8:30pm, happy to be in my own bed. continued next page... wSSm | womenssurfstyle.com | 121

What are some of the things your sponsors expect from you as a team rider? They expect that I keep a clean image that is worthy of being a role model. I am to represent their product, which means always having their sticker on my board, wearing the product at all times, but especially at events or whenever cameras are around, and showing up to events they organize such as autograph signings and photo shoots. I used to have to do contests, but in the last year I was able to convince them that I can be of more benefit to them if I stop doing contests and just focus my time and energy on photo shoots, so now my primary goal is getting their logos into magazines.

How does this make you feel and does it affect some of your life choices? I’m happy to be a role model. I went to college first before becoming a pro surfer and I like to encourage others to pursue an education before anything else.

House TV show I definitely felt trapped. I never realized the show would lead to “fame”. Suddenly, I was getting recognized in the grocery store.

The bank teller was asking me about the show.

I would be going for a run and get stopped to talk about the show. I would be at a restaurant with my boyfriend and he would get up to go to the bathroom and a bunch of guys would come over and start talking to me.

At first it was fun and flattering but it definitely became overwhelming.

People thought that because they had seen me on tv, they knew me. It was strange. Fortunately, after about 6 months it faded. I can’t imagine how real stars deal with it all the time.

What is the nicest thing anyone has ever said to you regarding your career? Anytime someone tells me that I have inspired them it feels really good.

Do you feel the image you and your sponsors present in ads/editorial/etc., as a pro surfer matches who you are as an individual person?

The ads that sponsors create portray the image that they want to associate with their products. Sometimes that image also describes my lifestyle. She is incredibly talented, has great style, aspects of being a pro surfer?The most stressful is dealing with airports, is very articulate, funny, friendly, beautiful, and also strangely humble for especially if your luggage doesn’t arrive, and organizing car rentals and a young girl who pretty much has everything she wants in life as well as a places to stay. The most enjoyable aspects are stepping off a plane into a lot of expectation on her shoulders. I hope she goes on to win many more new place and getting to explore. I have friends that live all over the world, but on tour we get to hang out, climb trees, go for massively long hikes barefoot, and have breakdancing What are some of the best products you’re sponsored with and competitions. Have you ever been asked to compromise your comfort level or personal beliefs in order to succeed as a pro surfer and how did you deal with it? I’m a tomboy. I’m most comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt or

boardshorts and a bikini top, depending on the weather. I don’t wear makeup or spend much time in front of a mirror. My hair is always in a ponytail. I like having dirty feet from running around barefoot.

But… when I was first getting into the surf industry I realized that looks help a lot, especially in women’s surfing. If you can surf well and look good too, it’s a winning combination. So, I won’t say I compromised any personal beliefs but I try to dress up a bit and change my image slightly in order to achieve my goals of making a living from surfing.

If crowds were not an option and you could surf anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? I have a few favorite places that I like to go that

have great waves and are un-crowded, but I’m definitely not naming them!

A better question would be if the distance (flight time, cost of airfare) were not an issue where would I surf? In that case, my favorite wave in the world is Macaronis in the Mentawais. It’s a rippable wave that allows tubes and turns. Every time I go there I freak out and try to catch as many waves as possible because it is so far away and so expensive to get there that I think it might be the last time I ever get to surf it.

Do you have future plans of starting your own company? Apparel, hardgoods, surf lessons? There are so many options for the future!

I’m getting my MBA in marketing right now just to add to my knowledge base and list of credentials. If I live in California I could see myself working in one of the marketing departments or web content creator at one of the brands.

Alternatively, I have become obsessed with Nicaragua and have started a small girls-only surf camp, called Suave Dulce. Ideally, I’d like to do something where I can split time between both places. I still have a couple years, so we’ll see.

What do you feel is the most important aspect of the industry that should be focused on and accomplished in the future of women’s surfing?

More support of the athletes via magazines like this would definitely help the women. It’s incredibly difficult these days to secure sponsorship. One of the required elements is visibility, but without a magazine focused on women’s surfing, there are very few places to get photos published and thus attract or reinforce sponsor interest. Do you think the women’s surf industry is looking bright for the next generations? Or do we ALL still have loads of work to do? More girls will

start surfing, they’ll improve, and some will want to compete. Whether or not they will be able to do that and earn a living doing it, is dependent on fashion -if the image of surfing remains cool enough for companies to use it in their advertising, and the willingness of those companies to utilize the athletes in place of or in addition to models in those advertisements.

What companies do you feel are contributing to the future of women’s surfing the most and how? Roxy and Billabong are contributing the most to

women’s surfing because between the two of them, they sponsor the majority of the girls on tour. O’Neill and Rip Curl help tremendously as well by sponsoring quite a few themselves as well as some high profile events.

Words of advice for girls wanting to secure a sponsor? Look through the advertisements in the magazines and direct your efforts towards the company whose advertisement most closely resembles your image. For example, if you are into hula skirts and ukuleles, go to Roxy instead of Volcom.

Enter as many contests as possible, get a friend or professional photographer to take as many photos of you surfing, cruising on the beach, posing, etc. as possible, and put everything together into a portfolio.

Make yourself a YouTube video that shows in 2 minutes or less, who you are, how you surf, why you love the company, and how you would be useful to them. Be persistent. If they don’t call or email back right away, call them again and again until they do.

What is the #1 mistake most up-and coming surfers make as they climb the ladder of pro surfing success and how can others avoid making it? The biggest mistake is doing it for the wrong reasons; wanting to be a pro surfer so you can hang out on a beach somewhere exotic is only going to lead to frustration. It’s also easy to get frustrated by failure.

The best way to avoid those is to remember the fun and why you started surfing in the first place. There’s a lot of hard work to be done, but in the end, it should be all about the simple act of having fun while riding waves.

What do you find to be the most meaningful & inspirational guidance to you as you grow older? All you really have is right now. If you

spend too much time dreaming about and planning for the future, you are never really enjoying what you have right in front of you. u

How old were you when you first knew surfing was going to be a part of your future and a way to make a living?

Around 10 yrs old.

What is your favorite surf trick and why?

Probably the Reo (vertical re-entry). When I do a good reo I can keep my speed, and transition well into other maneuvers.

If you had the perfect swell and no crowds... what break would you surf and why?

Probably Pinetrees, because it’s SO fun on the perfect swell!

Obviously the shark attack was a huge obstacle to overcome both physically and mentally. Aside from that experience, what’s been the hardest obstacle for you to overcome in surfing and how did you do it?

Surfing with one arm in a crowd- But it’s difficult for everybody when it’s crowded. I don’t limit myself; I just go out and try to have fun! Some breaks are easier than others for me, so I have my preferable spots.

What is the toughest break you’ve ever surfed and why? Margaret River was hard because the rip is strong when it’s big and the lineup is constantly changing- big rolling waves moving around all over the place. The takeoff spot is always changing and unpredictable!

We’ve gotta ask ya… how do you duck-dive since the attack? My dad glues a handle on my board along the stringer, which I grab onto and I open my eyes under the white water to see where I’m going.

With the women’s surf industry growing and changing over the past 10 years, what do you see as the biggest improvement in the industry for women specifically? More women are surfing now, and the pool of talent has raised the caliber and that pushes the level of everything (training, skill, competition) up, which attracts more sponsors for the women.

What does surfing mean to you in 1 word?

You have an extensive line of jewelry available at Claire’s… tell us about your inspiration in choosing the designs? I thought they should be “beachy” and casual since that’s how my life is; we chose mostly shell and surf inspired accessories.

Revelations is also a great line of perfume that you offer… how did you choose the scents and do they mean something special to you? It was really fun actually, I got to meet with the owners of the company and they brought me like 12 options for the girls and guys fragrances. I, my brothers and friends got to smell all of them and narrow down which ones we liked best!

We all liked the fruity (pineapple, coconut) and floral (orchid, jasmine) scents in Stoked because they remind us of home! But the best part of it is the surfboard shape, which means you can never throw away the bottle!

Insights on FAITH & what keeps you focused in life...

Your faith in Jesus Christ has been a driving force for you through your trials and especially in the aftermath of the shark attack.

Did you find yourself depressed or feeling “why me?” after the attack and if so, how were you able to overcome those emotions?

There was too much going on to feel sorry for myself. My mom helped me focus on the fact that I was alive, and we were thankful for that! My mom and dad raised me to have a solid foundation of faith and trust in Jesus as sovereign God. I just came to the conclusion that I couldn’t let my loss ruin my life and I looked for the purpose that God had for me and found joy in the fact that I was alive!

Are you scared that you might go through something like that again since you remained a surfer and continue to play in the natural habitat of sharks… the ocean?

Dangers lurk everywhere - on land and in the sea.

But I am more cautious now and the thought enters my mind occasionally. I just try not to think about the dangers and, instead, focus on life.

history already… but in your own words, how do you want to be remembered in life?

As a girl who loved the one true God, Jesus Christ, who fills her life with hope, purpose, love, surf, and the promise of eternal life.

If this were your last chance to influence someone’s life, what would you tell them?

The One who made the waves, Who walks on water, Who’s abounding in mercy, love and grace has the power to give you hope and new life in Him. Do you have a particular “Life Verse” or any that especially helps keep you focused and resting in the Lord Jesus Christ?

I love Psalm 91: 14-16 because it’s one of God’s promises to those of us who put our trust in the LORD and make Him our dwelling place and refuge!

“Because [she] loves me,’ says the LORD, ‘I will rescue [her]; I will protect [her], for [she] acknowledges my name. [She] will call upon me, and I will answer [her]; I will be with [her] in trouble, I will deliver [her] and honor [her]. With long life will I satisfy [her] and show [her] my salvation.”

(This is the NIV version; I switched the ‘he’ & ‘him’ to ‘she’ and ‘her’, since this is specific to us ladies!)

As you grow older, what are some of the goals you have set for yourself that you can share with us? I’m just taking life one day at a time, but my overall goal is to honor God. As I’m surfing the WQS this year, one goal is to qualify for the WCT and do the best I can with the ability and opportunity God has given me!

In addition, my love for Jesus motivates me to go beyond surfing and focus on helping others in specific places or ways - Like supporting orphanages, feeding the poor, meeting the medical needs of disabled children, and digging water wells and cisterns in communities of places I go to surf like Nicaragua, Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa, and South America.

True joy comes through helping others and not living for yourself!

Cologne For Guys were developed as a result of the very exciting, very young and ever-popular and emerging “surfing as fashion” trend. The awardwinning package was created as a replica surfboard and the outer-carton mimics the board standing in the “hot” sand. This was created prior to meeting Bethany, however, we felt very strongly about the importance of having a surfer/celebrity endorse this new and unique fragrance. Larry Couey, President of Revelations Perfume & Cosmetics, heavily researched the “surf” industry by visiting many surf shops in California, Florida, and The Jersey Shore. During a trip to a surf shop in Laguna Beach, CA, he happened to pick up a postcard advertising Bethany’s upcoming book – Soul Surfer. It was then that he knew that this was the perfect match.

Stoked and Wired to Live were created for the teen market and what better teen surfer than Bethany – with her amazing story of courage, faith, and talent – to become the spokesperson for this collection.

Through a web address found on the postcard, we were able to contact Bethany’s manager (Roy) who expressed immediate interest in our proposal.

Larry, Roy, and Bethany met just a few weeks later to further discuss this opportunity. Also developed at this initial meeting was the actual scent. Bethany’s middle name is ‘Meilani’, and she offered it immediately after I said to her ‘We need to come up with a name for your sandal’. Her dad, Tom, then told me ‘It roughly translates to “Heavenly Flower” in Hawaiian’. I think the name for her sandal was decided in about 15 seconds, over dinner!

IN THE BEGINNING...

My dad taught my three sisters and me to surf when we were younger. It became our family activity--going out surfing together. The very first time my dad took us out to Diamond Head, I was six years old.

Soon after, a coworker told him he should take us to Waikiki. Once we started going there I was hooked. I have a lot of fun memories surfing with my sisters during the summer days in Waikiki. I really started to surf a lot when I was about eight or nine. Besides surfing Waikiki, I would surf the Aina Haina area (Secrets, Lefts). About 99% of the time, I would surf with my sisters. When I was 13, the summer before my freshman year of high school, I decided I wanted to start competing and try to improve my surfing skills. I loved the feeling of pushing myself and always trying to improve.

LIFE WAS GOOD...

Though the option was there to shortboard, I started out longboarding and basically stuck with it. Nowadays, I probably shortboard 75% of the time when I’m freesurfing, but still stick with longboarding when I compete. I love both longboarding and shortboarding and feel they can complement each other. Shortboarding helps me learn to create speed with my longboarding, and longboarding helps me smooth out my shortboarding. After graduating Kaiser High School, I moved to Utah to attend BYU. After my freshman year, I really missed being able to surf and compete, so I transferred to BYU Hawaii in Laie for two years. During those years, I traveled and started to compete on the professional level. In 2008, I won the ASP Women’ Longboard World Championship in Biarritz, France. It had been a goal of mine since I started to compete to become a world champion one day. I picked up two new sponsors after winning Worlds (Xcel and Hoven Sunglasses), and continued to have the full support from my previous sponsors.

SURFING’S CHALLENGES...

I don’t think I’ve ever had a horrible surfing experience. The worst thing that ever happened to me was surfing Waikiki. Someone let go

of their board going over a wave just as I caught it, so the board shot back into me and cracked a couple of my ribs.

Competing has taught me a lot of things, like how to be more patient out in the lineup, work on being in the right position, and following through on every wave.

MARRIED AND LOVING IT...

I married my high school sweetheart in Dec of 2006. Drew does know how to surf, but would rather be on the golf course than out in the water. He has been 100% supportive of my goals in surfing since we first started dating and has continued to support me throughout our marriage, which I am extremely grateful for. Some friends were concerned that he doesn’t surf, but it actually is kind of nice to have time to ourselves, me going out surfing and he going golfing. Of course, we love doing other things together--watch movies, hike, play with our nieces and nephews, chores, etc. Hopefully one day, we will be able to take our kids to the beach (or the golf course) and enjoy family time there. :)

I just graduated in April from BYU in accounting, but don’t have a job yet. I barely came back from going to France for the ASP Women’s World Championships in Biarritz. I placed third this year and was pleased with my surfing. My husband surprised me with a few days in Paris after Biarritz, which was an awesome way to end our trip. Since I’ve been in Utah going to school for the past few years, I haven’t done much traveling except to France during the summer. Now that I’m done with school, I hope to be able to travel and surf a lot more.

JOY’S WORDS OF ADVISE FOR OTHER SURFING WOMEN...

As a female surfer, I think the best advice I can give is to always have fun. My parents taught me to “work hard, play harder”.

I do enjoy competing, but I really just enjoy being out in the ocean, experiencing Mother Nature, and building friendships through the surfing community. u
