GET BETTER WITH PHOTOGRAPHY LIGHTING

HELLO! I am Char Kway Teow. I love to share the love of photography by giving presentations.

“May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

1) HARD LIGHT • Intense light that creates harsh shadows. • Dramatic lighting. • Use with care. • Makes people look like deer in headlight when directly fired in-theface.

2) SOFT LIGHT • Gentle light that creates mellow shadows. • Smooth lighting. • Makes people look like good with a soft glow when used correctly.

3) INTENSITY • Wide gentle light sources produces softer light. • Clouds and fog are good examples of soft light. • Narrow intense light sources produces harsh light. • Camera flash without any form of diffuser is a source of narrow intense light.

4) DISTANCE • Distance will affect the quality of light. • The closer the light source is to the subject, the more intense it will be. • The further the light source is from the subject, the less intense it will be.

5) BOUNCING LIGHT • You can intentionally bounce light off walls and ceilings. • They act as diffusers as well. • Similarly, you can use a reflector to obtain similar results.

6) BACKGROUND • It is important that your subject ties in to the background. • It will look unnatural if your subject sticks out like a sore thumb. • Small flash units normally cannot fill up an entire background. • It is important to expose to the background first, then fill the subject in.
