MISSION STATEMENT Wayne State University believes that intercollegiate athletics are an important and wholesome adjunct to the principal purposes of the University: (1) the advancement of knowledge through research and investigation; and (2) the dissemination of knowledge through teaching. To that end, participants in intercollegiate athletics must be, first and foremost, students whose fundamental aim is to obtain a sound education. A major mission of the University is to achieve an increasing level of excellence in the quality of its programs and to enhance the visibility and recognition of the University as a whole. Students who participate in intercollegiate athletics are directly involved in the implementation of this mission of excellence, and by such participation, provide a unifying objective of community and University. Wayne State University believes that a well-balanced program in intercollegiate sports is important so long as it remains in proper focus as an ancillary of the real purposes of the University; so long as it remains under academic control; so long as the players are bona fide students; and so long as the coaches strive to instill qualities of honesty, sportsmanship and clean play.

control. He has served as liaison to various NCAA committees for which the conference held cabinet positions. The MAC presidents recognized Fournier’s achievements when they unanimously conferred a Certificate of Commendation and a mark of esteem for his efforts in 1999. Previous to joining to the MAC, Fournier served as assistant athletic director at the University of Akron. In addition to overseeing the men’s athletic programs, he was responsible for all athletic financial aid, eligibility, drug/alcohol education and compliance. His fundraising efforts resulted in a number of facility improvements to the athletic campus. He formed one of the first studentathlete advisory groups in the country (an effort he repeated at the Mid-American Conference) and was a member of the development executive board. A former member of the faculty, Fournier remained active in the classroom at the University of Akron, teaching courses in communication and criminal justice. A licensed attorney, Fournier received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude and his master’s with honors from the University of Akron. He was a national forensics champion and qualified for the national finals in six events. Fournier received his law degree from the University of Akron in 1986 and was admitted to the Ohio bar that same year where he is still licensed to practice. He and his wife Pam, a Vice President at ACS, reside in Walled Lake.

hockey, he served as the chair of the Structure Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. Prior to joining Wayne State, Fournier served as the Senior Associate Commissioner and general counsel for the Mid-American Conference. While serving as the acting Commissioner of the Conference (1999), he moved the league office from Toledo to Cleveland, wrote and secured a longterm contract for the men’s basketball tournament
at the Gund Arena (now Quicken Loans Arena) and secured the three largest corporate gifts in the history of the MAC including First Energy as the tournament sponsor for the men’s postseason basketball tournament. He also wrote and negotiated the Motor City Bowl football contract that is the MAC’s longest postseason Bowl alignment. As the chief compliance officer for the league, Fournier investigated and reported on over three hundred and fifty (350) infraction cases that insured fairness in case resolution and corrective action. At the request of institutions, he has appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and conducted campus reviews of compliance effectiveness in financial aid, rules education, eligibility and institutional

Rob Fournier culminated his eight years at Wayne State in 2008 by being honored by NACDA as the Athletics Director of the Year in the Central Region. Since his arrival in September of 2000, Fournier’s plan to invigorate the Wayne State athletic department has centered on three goals - academic achievement, community outreach and competitive success. To that end, the record has been telling. In 2007-08, Warrior student-athletes completed 4,000 community service hours, won four conference titles, and had 10 teams earn bids to the NCAA postseason tournament. The Warriors seven best finishes ever in the NACDA Cup standings which measures the overall performance of athletic programs around the country have occurred in the last seven years. WSU has jumped 100 places in the standings since Fournier’s arrival at WSU. In those eight years, 26 WSU coaches have been honored as conference Coachof-the-Year while two have been distinguished as National Coach of the Year. On average, 53% of WSU’s nearly 400+ studentathletes have a 3.00 or better grade-point average and 23% are above 3.5. In the latest federallymandated graduation study, Warrior studentathletes graduated at a 20% higher mark than the comparable campus population, their best finish ever. The overall grade-point average for all 16 athletic teams at the start of the 2008 fall term is 2.98. These, and other academic achievements, are recognized at the annual academic banquet, which he started in 2001. Fournier’s ability to generate corporate support has vastly improved the physical setting of the athletic campus and the competitive balance of the Warrior teams. In his eight years he has raised $6,041,450 from a variety of sources. That total has helped complete the following facility initiatives: football locker room; baseball’s replica Fenway Park stadium; men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms; softball grandstand, walkway and pressbox; a Boston Garden-like parquet floor for basketball; Hall of Fame foyer; swimming video board and pool
improvements; football ticket booths and stadium entrance; outdoor marquee; FieldTurf and a new track; scoreboards for baseball and football with a video display; trainer’s treatment area; new USTA tennis courts; and a design charette for a new arena. The physical transformation has been both noticeable and imaginative and boasts a number of cosmetic infrastructure changes as well. In the past four years alone, student-athletes have committed over 14,000 community service hours with such programs as St. Leo’s and St. Aloysius soup kitchens, Motor City Makeover, Make-A-Wish, Relay for Life, canned food drives, Boys and Girls Club, Toys-for-Tots, Skate for the Cure, Genesis House, Focus Hope, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and SMARTS mentoring. In particular, the Think Detroit/PAL initiative pairs WSU student-athletes and coaches with over 13,000 Detroit school children in a variety of program and outreach activities. All this is accomplished under the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, one of the first in the conference. Fournier has also initiated an outreach effort for coaches and staff to volunteer one day a month to a charitable cause in a program labeled WIN -- Warriors in the Neighborhood. Fournier served three years as a member of the NCAA regional-ranking football committee whose responsibilities include selecting the top teams in the region each week and the teams that advance to the postseason. This year he has been selected to serve on the NCAA softball regional ranking committee. He currently serves as the chair of the GLIAC officiating committee and is past President of the Conference Executive Committee. In women’s

Phil Nickel was named the 12th head coach in the history of the Wayne State University women’s volleyball program on March 3, 2008, by WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. “In Phil we have the person that reflects well on the long and comprehensive national search process we undertook,” said Fournier. “He brings leadership, a strong recruiting background and knows what it takes to build and sustain a winning program. His positive reception during the interview process by student-athletes, staff and other coaches underscores those intangible attributes that are so necessary to work with divergent groups and achieve success. I look forward to the energy, focused approach and work habits that have been a trademark of his career.”
Nickel comes to Wayne State after serving as the assistant coach at the University of Houston for the last six seasons (2002-07). His responsibilities at Houston included recruiting, personnel development and assisting with on-court coaching. During his tenure with the Cougars, Nickel helped coach eight athletes to 12 All-Conference honors, including the 2004 and 2005 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year Jaci Gonzalez. “First of all, I would like to thank Rob Fournier for the opportunity to lead the Wayne State volleyball program,” commented Nickel. “This gives me the chance to bring my family back to the Midwest, and to build a championship volleyball program. Rob has made a commitment to the volleyball program, and I look forward to working with him to reach the goals we have set.” His other NCAA Division I volleyball experience includes assistant coaching positions at Illinois State (2000-01) and Wright State (1998-99), as well as a head coaching job at Division III Thomas More College for two years (1996-97). Nickel compiled a 34-43 mark in his two seasons with the Saints leading them to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a #4 ranking in the South Region in 1997. TMC finished the year with a 20-17 record.

tournament, win the majority of our matches at home – make Wayne State a tough place for our opponents to play – and build a foundation (of success).” Wayne State’s season will commence Aug. 29 at the California State University Monterey Bay Otter Classic in Seaside, Calif. WSU will face Merrimack and Western Oregon, two schools which qualified for their respective NCAA Regional tournaments a year ago, as well as Humboldt State and CSU Monterey Bay on its trip to the west coast. The Warriors head to Ohio the following weekend for a tournament hosted by the University of Findlay. Bellarmine and Wheeling Jesuit are slated for Sept. 5, while 2007 Atlantic Regional champion California (Pa.) and former GLIAC member Gannon will battle WSU the following day. GLIAC play opens at home Sept. 12 against Grand Valley State, the 2007 Great Lakes Regional Champion and Elite Eight participant. “We have Grand Valley right off the bat, which is an immediate test and will give us a gauge of where we need to be to compete at the top of the conference,” says Nickel. “I believe if you’re one of the top teams in the conference, then that makes you pretty competitive on a national scale.” The Sept. 12 showdown against the Lakers will open a five-match GLIAC homestand for the Warriors, who will also host Ferris State, Northwood, Findlay, and 2007 GLIAC Tournament finalist Hillsdale in that stretch. Wayne State will participate in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover, hosted by the University of Indianapolis, midway through the season, with pairings and match times to be determined. Finally, Wayne State hopes to realize its goal of qualifying for the GLIAC Tournament in November. The Warriors have not received a playoff berth since 2005, but Nickel believes they have a legitimate shot to make it this season. “I think we’ll catch some people off guard and be a team to contend with.”

and we expect her to contribute a lot as well.” Aside from the seniors, junior Meg Leone (Troy, Mich.) and sophomores Maureen MacDonald (White Lake, Mich./Marian) and Katy Westenberg (Milford, Mich.) will represent the Warrior veteran corps. Leone amassed 149 kills, second-most on the team, and led the Warriors with a .959 serve reception percentage. MacDonald contributed 71 kills and 157 digs a year ago, and Westenberg finished eighth in the GLIAC with a 9.12 assists/game average as WSU’s primary setter. “Meg is probably going to train at both the left and right side, and Maureen will do the same,” says Nickel. “Those two will be battling for a starting position. “We worked with Katy a lot over the summer. She was just a freshman last year, and it’s sometimes hard for a freshman to be a leader, but as a setter it’s kind of inherent to that position. “Katy’s very talented, and I’m expecting big things from her as well.” Sophomore middle hitter Mariel VanOverbeke (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), who played in just four matches last season, and redshirt freshmen Kristen Miles (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) and Ashley Penny (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon) round out Wayne State’s returning roster. Sophomore Katrina Bezak (Milford, Mich.), a defensive and service specialist who was second on the team with 21 aces and WSU’s leader in serve percentage (.957), will miss the 2008 season due to injury. Among the five new faces on the squad are three transfers from Macomb Community College, all of whom earned All-Region and All-MCCAA honors last year. Sarha Gosselin (Harrison Twp., Mich./Warren Lincoln) broke MCC’s single-season record last season with 645 kills, “which is a ridiculous amount,” says Nickel. “I hope she doesn’t have to do that here. I don’t want it to be a case where we’re just setting her every ball, but we’re expecting her to add some firepower.” Gosselin, who garnered First Team All-America accolades in 2007, led the nation with 185 aces, another school record. She also set a new MCC career mark with 1180 kills, having collected 535 the previous year and earning All-Region, All-MCCAA, and Second Team AllAmerica awards. Candis Jenich (Warren, Mich./Cousino) served as cocaptain for the Monarchs and was second on the team with 435 kills, 390 digs, 98 aces, and a 2.70 kills/game average last year. “Everybody that I’ve talked to about Candis says that she’s a good player and has a great attitude,” says Nickel. “She’s the kind of player that becomes the glue holding a team together.” Lauren Mallast (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay), who Nickel believes will compete with Gear for the starting middle position, was second in the nation and led Macomb with 238 blocks in 2007 while contributing 378 kills. “She will provide some stability in both blocking and offense in the middle for us.” Freshman Ashley Burgess (Rochester Hills, Mich./ Avondale), who was an all-league setter in high school, is the lone rookie on the team. Kent State transfer Jessica Condeni (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) will practice with the team but cannot compete due to NCAA transfer regulations. Wayne State was selected to finish fifth in the South Division in the 2008 GLIAC preseason coaches poll, but Nickel and the Warriors hope to far exceed the expectations of their peers. “Some of our goals are to make the conference

A new era of Wayne State volleyball begins this season as Phil Nickel takes the helm in his first year as the head coach of the Warriors. Nickel inherits a squad that went 10-15 a year ago, including a 5-12 conference mark that placed Wayne State fourth in the GLIAC South Division. Despite the team’s offense ranking near the bottom in the conference statistically, Nickel believes the biggest aspect that needs improvement is attitude. “We want to change the attitude of Wayne State volleyball, because I don’t think that there’s necessarily been an expectation to win,” says Nickel. “That’s one of the first things I want to do – instill that expectation of winning. “This is a new chapter of Wayne State volleyball.” With 10 returning players and five newcomers in 2008, Nickel understands that, “it’s going to be important to mesh that group together.” Wayne State has three seniors returning, two of which earned All-GLIAC honors in 2007. Libero Mayssa Bazzi (Dearborn, Mich.), an All-GLIAC Second Team selection who set the school single-season record with 656 digs last year, will serve as the team captain this season. She led the GLIAC and finished second in the nation with a 7.45 digs/game average while posting a team-best 38 service aces. “I wish we had Mayssa for three or four more years instead of just one,” says Nickel. “She wants to win in her senior year, and she has the abilities to help us do that.” Kim Gear (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet), Wayne State’s top returning hitter and blocker, was chosen to the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team a year ago. She totaled 239 kills in 2007 and finished sixth in the GLIAC with a 1.06 blocks/game average. “We’re expecting Kim to come in and be a solid player again. I don’t think she’ll have to be the best player this year and carry the load, but we will expect her to be one of our steady top players and provide some leadership.” Defensive specialist Marcie Hill (Dearborn, Mich.) finished fourth on the team with 178 digs last year. She also totaled 11 aces and was third on the squad with a .951 serve percentage. “Marcie could probably start as a libero for a lot of teams,” says Nickel. “She’s a very talented young lady,

great lakes intercollegiate athletic conference
24
The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), founded in 1972, has been a leader in the advancement and promotion of intercollegiate athletics for men and women for 37 years. The charter members of the GLIAC were Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Lake Superior State University, Northwood University, and Saginaw Valley State University. Expansion of the GLIAC began immediately with the addition of Oakland University in 1974. Hillsdale College, Northern Michigan University, and Wayne State University were accepted as members in 1975. In 1977, the conference lost its first member when Northern Michigan withdrew. Michigan Technological University filled the vacancy when it became a member in 1980. After the 1986-87 season, Northwood left the conference and was replaced by Northern Michigan. Northwood rejoined the conference in 1992. After the 1989 season, the conference dropped football as a sponsored sport. The conference schools sponsoring football joined the members of the Heartland Collegiate Conference in forming the football-only Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), which began play in 1990. After nine years of existence as one of the premier conferences in Division II football, the MIFC merged as part of GLIAC on July 1, 1999. With the merger, the University of Indianapolis became an associate member as a football-only school. The GLIAC entered a new era in the 1995-96 school year. Prior to 1995-96, all member institutions of the GLIAC were located in the state of Michigan. On December 14, 1994, membership was offered to three schools located in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The expansion members were Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, and Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, both located in Erie, Pennsylvania. All three schools began their membership July 1, 1995. On July 1, 1997, membership was granted to The University of Findlay, located in Findlay, Ohio. UF replaced Oakland University, which withdrew from the conference after the 199697 season as it moved to NCAA Division I status. Westminster College, located in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, became the 14th member of the GLIAC when it accepted its expansion offer in May of 1997. On June 30, 2000 Westminster left the conference as it changed its affiliation to NCAA Division III. The GLIAC will expand again when Tiffin University of Ohio joins the conference in the 2008-09 academic year. Tiffin was offered membership on June 20, 2007, and will compete in 18 of the league’s championships. The addition of Tiffin leaves the GLIAC with 12 full members as Gannon and Mercyhurst moved to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for the 2008-09 academic year. Overall the GLIAC conducts championships in 20 sports, 10 for men and 10 for women. The policy-making body of the GLIAC is the Executive Council, which is comprised of three representatives from each member institution - its director of athletics, faculty athletics representative and senior woman administrator. The presidency of the GLIAC is rotated alphabetically by school, with Tim Selgo, Director of Athletics at Grand Valley State, serving as GLIAC President in 2008-09. As GLIAC commissioner, Tom Brown is responsible for all conference administration. He is beginning his 17th season as the conference’s fifth commissioner. Assisting Brown are: Penny Cook, Assistant Commissioner for Compliance/SWA, Jeff Ligney, Director of Media Relations; Denise Gross, Assistant to the Commissioner; Eric Brookhouse, GLIAC Intern; Phil Barnes, Supervisor of Football Officials; John Kirk, Supervisor of Basketball Officials; and Jeanne Skinner, Supervisor of Volleyball Officials.

Wayne State University: World-Class Education in the Real World™ Wayne State University is Michigan’s only urban research university, a national, comprehensive institution that provides access to a world-class education. WSU students learn from some of the best scholars in the world. The university has close partnerships with many neighboring Fortune 500 companies, offering students unparalleled learning and internship opportunities. Students also have unrivaled connections to vast learning opportunities in Detroit and throughout Michigan. The 230,000 alumni who live in Southeastern Michigan offer unmatched access to mentors in virtually all career paths. Chances are the professionals Southeast Michigan relies on every day -- doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, nurses, teachers and accountants -- attended WSU. Nationally Recognized Schools and Colleges With more than 350 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 12 schools and colleges, Wayne State meets the needs of most students. Day, evening and Saturday course scheduling makes it easy for working students to take classes. Courses are offered on the main campus in Detroit’s Midtown and at six satellite campuses throughout Southeastern Michigan -- in Clinton Township, Farmington Hills, Harper Woods, Madison Heights, Northwest Detroit and Port Huron. Leading-Edge Research Undergraduate and graduate students learn alongside world-renowned researchers at WSU. The university ranks among the nation’s top 50 public research universities, with $226 million in annual research expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation. Wayne State recently established the National Biofuel Energy Lab. The lab’s goal is to facilitate widespread use of biofuels, or fuels made from renewable resources such as vegetable oil, which can either be recycled from restaurants or culled from organically grown crops such as soybeans and sunflowers. Biofuels are biodegradable, nontoxic and have significantly fewer emissions than petroleum-based diesel when burned. The College of Engineering Smart Sensors and Integrated Microsystems lab is progressing toward breakthroughs with biosensors, including breast cancer detection and water and air contaminant detection. Retinal and cortical implants being developed by the lab may offer hope of vision and improved vision for the blind and seeing-impaired. The lab is also developing the next-generation technology in robotic surgery, including optical tissue diagnostics that provide instant biopsies in surgery. Wayne State also houses the Perinatology Research Branch, part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which conducts major research in maternal-fetal medicine. Vibrant, Growing Campus Wayne State’s vibrant campus features more than 100 research and education buildings, and it is growing. The university has opened nine new buildings since 2000, including three residence halls with retail establishments, a two-story Barnes & Noble bookstore, a Welcome Center, the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center and the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. In fall 2008, Wayne State will open the Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center, an engineering facility that will grow sustainable energy technology, health care and biotech innovation and other high-tech industries. Wayne State’s residence halls feature on-site laundry and dining; staffed 24-hour reception desks; academic, social and personal programs; and rooms, each with private bath, high-speed Internet connection, cable and local telephone services. The Undergraduate Library is designed just for undergraduates, with more than 500 computer workstations and a 24-hour study center. In the heart of campus, students can get in shape with the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center’s extensive exercise equipment, free weights, fitness classes, 30-foot climbing wall, basketball/volleyball courts and running/walking track. Students enjoy easy access to all the amenities of a major city. Wayne State is within minutes of The Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, The New Detroit Science Center, Fisher Theatre, Fox Theatre, Max M. Fisher Music Center, Comerica Park (home of Tigers baseball), Ford Field (home of Lions football) and Joe Louis Arena (home of Red Wings hockey).

Academic Programs Available
s t a t e
Wayne State University CoSIDA Academic All-Americans
Tutorial Services, Writing Center, Mathematics Laboratory The university provides free peer tutoring in most subject areas either on a dropin or by-appointment basis. In the event that the Academic Success Center cannot provide tutoring for a specific class, the Department of Athletics has set aside funds to hire individual tutors. The coordinator works with academic department chairs to identify qualified tutors and is always available to arrange special individual or group sessions in a variety of areas. As in all other services, the office works in a proactive manner to provide assistance before academic problems arise.
w a y n e
Advising/Registration In conjunction with academic advisors in the University Advising Center, the coordinator assists student-athletes with term course planning and registration, including holding special student-athlete Orientation sessions to introduce them to NCAA and GLIAC eligibility requirements and departmental academic policies as well as to Wayne State University’s academic programs, procedures and regulations, and services. The office also works closely with academic advisors in all the university’s schools and colleges to ensure appropriate semester course selection and timely progress towards degree. The office serves as a clearinghouse for information about campus resources and student support services, university forms, enrollment deadlines and institutional academic policies and procedures.
Structured Study In an effort to help ensure the academic success and the development of consistent study patterns of student-athletes, the coordinator organizes supervised study sessions for each team.
w a r r i o r s
Counseling/Mentoring The coordinator meets with student-athletes individually and arranges for group meetings/workshops with other support service personnel regarding academic, athletic, career, and/or personal issues (for example, group sessions covering such topics as test-taking skills, time management, learning styles, etc.) The Department of Athletics has collaborative relationships with many other critical units on campus to help provide appropriate support services.
Over 200 student-athletes, faculty and staff attended the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet held in April 2008.
u n i v e r s i t y
Academic Monitoring The Department of Athletics participates in the university-wide early alert system in which instructors in lower division classes provide notification to students and their advisors about unsatisfactory progress after the fourth week of classes. In conjunction with the coaching staff, requests for information about class attendance and performance are sent to each instructor. The academic coordinator tracks individual progress, schedules meetings with students as appropriate, and personally contacts instructors as necessary.

w a y n e
Athletic Academic Services The Wayne State Athletic Department has developed a comprehensive approach to academic services for its student-athletes. The department’s goal is to assist student-athletes in pursuit of their designated course of studies and ultimately to achieve graduation. This objective is facilitated by appropriate academic advising, major selection, tutorial assistance and other life skill development and academic support services. A major goal of athletic academic services is to significantly increase the department’s graduation rate over the next five years and to continually emphasize the success of WSU’s student-athletes in the community. Part of the initiative already has been realized by the department’s annual Spring Academic Recognition Banquet that not only honors student-athletes with a 3.5 or better grade point average, but also those individuals who will graduate that term. The name of each graduate is permanently displayed on a brick as part of the department’s “Wall of Fame.” The recognition is prominently displayed in the main concourse as you enter the Matthaei Athletic Facility Complex.

strength and conditioning w a y n e
In just six years, the WSU Strength and Conditioning program has made an immense and immediate impact on the Warrior athletic teams. The department is responsible for all 16 varsity sports totaling approximately 400 student-athletes. The previous 2250-square foot renovation of three racquetball courts in the Matthaei lower level has provided student-athletes with an exclusive area that includes three double-sided squat racks used for squats and presses, six adjustable benches, 15 Med-X plate-loaded machines, over 13,000 pounds of weights and one complete set of dumbbells ranging in weight from 5 to 120 pounds. A second renovation took place in the spring of 2007 converting a fourth racquetball court into an area for treadmills and offices. A philosophy based on the belief that what is done inside and outside the weight room transfers to the playing surface contributes to the overall attitude of each student-athlete. With each sport having specific demands, the program works year-round with the student-athletes on elevating each player’s success.
