A Hand With A Good Reach By Rob Fournier, esq, Director of Athletics

We have come a long way since AT&T offered seven (7) different ring tones back in the mid-eighties. Today that same optional mechanism is limitless including: music, fight songs and movie lines. Obviously a lot of folks are calling. But who is listening? Who is “answering” the calls today? I know a group of young people who have literally answered “the call” and in doing so have transformed our City and its inhabitants. That call has resulted in 12,435 community service hours volunteered on a variety of ways this past year. Their effort, and successes, is as varied and as encompassing as the City we call home. It is an eye-opening number. And that call did not require any special ring tone. It is simply a response to wanting to make a difference. In a world where the sensational has numbed us to daily stories of hard work and character, a review of those accomplishments by our studentathletes is humbling and generous. Where acts of charity are minimalized by brutality and senseless acts of hatred, their work is a contrast worth acknowledgment. One of the enduring characteristics of athletics is that in the end, you know the score. If just as a scoreboard, well then those 12,435 hours are daunting. Often coaches tell me the final score did not tell the whole story of the contest… admittedly that assessment is usually given on the losing end of the result. Well, if that is true, I can tell you that our volunteer number does not adequately illustrate the impact of those contributions. And that is just as true for the recipients as for our student-athletes. Behind the numbers are such activities as: #Lunchbag (hashtag lunchbag) in which 107 student-athletes assembled at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church and made and packed lunches before departing for outreach destinations such as the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO), the downtown bus depot and Coalition for Temporary Shelter (COTS) for distribution. Or the Shoes that Fit program in which student-athletes took the initiative to collect money and purchased “dress shoes” (approximately 500 pairs) for first through fifth graders at Caesar Chavez and Bagley Elementary schools – many of whom have never even owned a “new” pair of shoes in their life as well as the Annual Basic Needs Drive in which student-athletes collect toiletries throughout the year and combine it with samples from nearby hotels and then distribute them around Detroit to the homeless. These are some of the stories behind the 12,435 hours. That certainly puts a face with that scoreboard.

LETTER FROM THE AD

#Lunchbag 2016

Back when I was in college, I had a class about Democracy in America. The premise of the class was the relevance or necessity of America in the world. One of the textbooks was titled, “Is America Necessary?” One of the contrasting perspectives that was presented was authored by Alexis De Tocqueville. His observations came in the nineteenth century long before a young country had even addressed many of its inequalities but it proved prescient. In fact, back in the mid-eighties (I know it seems a long time ago when you write it) he was much quoted and referenced by politicians and sociologists. Needless to say, I cannot summarize the course in this article, but most importantly, De Tocqueville’s first-hand observations of America as an ambassador from France was inspirational, pragmatic and aspirational in many ways for an impressionable twenty-something (unfortunately back then we did not have catchy phrases like Millennials or Generation X to define ourselves).

In a world where the sensational has numbed us to daily stories of hard work and character, a review of those accomplishments by our student-athletes is humbling and generous.

Like De Tocqueville, that future will be an unexpected journey, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be surprised about what you learn about other people…and yourself. Those 12,435 volunteer hours represent goodness. A spirit that transcends differences in color, gender, race and background. There is a message there for all of us.

Basic Needs Drive 2016

De Tocqueville had traveled to America in 1831 with a contemporary to study ostensibly the American prison system. He found more than examples of a criminal justice system. The two traveled from the deplorable Sing Sing prison, to New Orleans, to the woods of Michigan (Michigan was referenced even though it did not officially become a state until six years later) for nine months by stagecoach, steam boat, canoe and horseback. He interviewed thousands and when he returned to France, wrote of the experiences and his observations. It was in a subsequent text entitled “Democracy in America” that he committed to paper his impressions of America’s “greatness” that became so quoted and influential.

For the young people preforming that outreach, I know there is a lot of “road” left to be traveled in their lives. Maybe not like the pathway of De Tocqueville, but certainly highways of change, roadblocks and challenges. But whatever the road ahead, I firmly believe those early encounters and experiences will ready our student-athletes for whatever is ahead. Like De Tocqueville, that future will be an unexpected journey, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be surprised about what you learn about other people…and yourself. That is why those early community service opportunities while in their 20’s will serve our student-athletes well in the future. You might learn that America’s greatness is not so much in its riches…as it is with its people. It is America’s greatness.

He had made some assumptions about America before he embarked which he later debunked. His premise was that America was great because of its easy ports of entry, its great resources and its agriculture. But after his journey, his hypothesis changed.

"America is great because she is good, and if she ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great." ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE Shoes That Fit 2015

Instead, he admitted he found the answer to “America’s greatness” in its churches and synagogues. I know, some people have just stopped reading this piece. That is just how polarizing we have become today on just about every single issue of importance in American life. Unfortunately that is a sad observation of today’s society…but it does not alter the unequivocal conclusion of De Tocqueville. He wrote, “America is great because she is good, and if she ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” Almost 200 years later, those words ring just as true today.

Warrior Football Season 2016

The Wayne State University football program has finalized its 2016 schedule and game times for the six contests at Adams Field this fall. Season tickets can be purchased online or by calling (313) 577-4280. "The 2016 schedule is the most demanding in years," commented head coach Paul Winters. We must prepare to be tested every week!" For the first time since WSU joined the GLIAC in 1975, the Warriors will play 11 conference games. With the untimely departure of Malone, the league office modified the originally approved league schedule with Wayne State adding a home game versus Lake Erie in place of a contest in Detroit vs. the Pioneers. Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont.) was selected as the 2016 NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) Division II National Player of the Year as announced by the organization in May. After leading the Warriors to a 42-7 regular-season mark and the GLIAC regular-season title for a second consecutive season, Butler was voted GLIAC Player of the Year for 2016 by the conference head coaches. During the regular season, in terms of individual national leaders, Butler led the country in batting average (.509), was sixth in triples (7), 12th in on-base percentage (.544), 13th in slugging percentage (.848), 16th in triples per game (0.14) and 26th in runs scored (1.06 per game). In the circle, Butler was fourth in ERA (0.73), ninth in both wins (24) and fewest hits allowed per game (3.95), 12th in shutouts (8), 22nd in strikeouts (195), 28th in saves (3) and 32nd in strikeouts per game (7.9). She helped WSU to its fifth straight GLIAC tournament title and its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 11 years (five consecutive from 2012-2016). Butler, WSU's leadoff hitter for all 60 contests, concluded her junior season with a .483 batting average (97-for-201), 38 extra-base hits (19 2B, 7 3B, 12 HR) and 42 RBI. Her .826 slugging percentage was .100 higher than the previous school mark of .726 set by Alison Allen in 2011, while Butler's .521 on-base percentage edged the previous WSU record of .517 set by WSU Hall of Fame inductee Patty Grudzinski in 1992. Her 60 runs scored rank second in program history, while Butler's 97 hits surpassed Grudzinski's 95 in 1992. Both her 19 doubles and seven triples were WSU records, while Butler's 12 home runs is tied-for-third in a single season. Her 166 total bases shattered the previous Warrior record of 136 set by Allen in 2010, while Butler's 11 times reached base via an error is tied-for-fourth all-time. This was the third consecutive year Butler has led the squad in triples, home runs and slugging percentage, and the second straight year in at bats, runs, hits and total bases. In terms of pitching marks, Butler's 29 victories ranked third, while both her opponent batting average (.164) and shutouts (11) ranked fifth. In addition, both her ERA (0.77) and strikeouts (227) was seventh in the WSU annals. Butler has led the Warriors in wins, strikeouts, saves, complete games, shutouts and innings pitched each of the last three seasons.

Defensively, she led the squad in fielding assists with 121, which is tied-for-12th in school history. Student Athlete Academic Success The student-athletes at Wayne State University continue to excel in the classroom. Fifteen (15) student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.00 term GPA with 63 percent of Warrior student-athletes receiving above a 3.00 for the recently completed Winter semester.

"This academic report underscores the graduation rate success of our student-athletes which has now climbed to 76 percent in the latest Federal Reporting cycle," said Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. "Consequently, the term grade report with 63 percent of our student-athletes above a 3.00, and 14 of 17 teams with a cumulative team GPA above 3.00, would be the foundation for that graduation success. And with the "lowest" team GPA at 2.89, simply put, the student-athlete success is a University achievement. In programs from engineering, to nursing, to pharmacy, to the Honors College, these are young people performing at laudatory levels at a Carnegie I Research Institution. We are pretty proud of that resume ... and they should be too." ROB FOURNIER, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

A familiar theme in recent summers is the sight of construction workers and equipment and the summer of 2016 was no different. After the busy months of May, June and July – August brings the excitement of additions to already excellent facilities. Below are details on three major projects. Stay tuned to WSUATHLETICS.COM for continuing updates.

Harwell Field

Football Athletic Annex

Softball Complex

The Ernie & Lulu Harwell Stadium broke ground on August 2, 2016. The project will replicate historic Ebbets Field the former home of the Brooklyn Dodgers and Ernie Harwell's first broadcast location. The interior will house artifacts of baseball as well as a tribute wall. The two million dollar project is paid for entirely by private and corporate support. Work is expected to be completed by December 23, 2016, with the unveiling at next year's Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Work has begun by construction giant Barton Malow to add a football annex to the facility. The expanded area will incorporate a new welcome center, add 68 lockers to the current 105, and have additional coaching area/ meeting space. The work to connect with the west side of the building is to be completed by September 1, 2016. The $500,000 addition was paid for by private funding.

The softball field will undergo a majar overhaul this summer. The upgrades include: new fencing at increased distances, protective dugout barriers, new infield and turf to the outfield. In addition, expect a new medium for scoring.

PROJECT UPDATES | COMPLIANCE

We want to remind you of what is acceptable when dealing with our current and prospective student athletes. First, it is important to determine if you must follow the rules surrounding a representative of athletics interest. You are considered a “Representative of Athletics Interest” or “booster” if you: • Are or have been a member of any organization promoting Wayne State University Athletics. • Have ever made a donation to the Athletic Department or any booster organization. • Have ever assisted in evaluating or recruiting prospects. • Have ever helped to arrange or have provided employment to enrolled student-athletes, prospects, to their parents or relatives. • Participated in a Wayne State athletics program. • Once you become a representative or athletics interests, you retain this status FOREVER. Please keep in mind, it is possible to jeopardize a student-athlete’s eligibility with just one act of kindness! Please ask before you act. 2016 SUMMER WARRIOR WITHIN

Deans' Award Winners

The Wayne State University Department of Athletics honored the Warrior student-athletes who recorded at least a 3.50 grade-point average for the Fall 2015 term during its 16th annual Academic Recognition Luncheon in April at Historic St. Andrew's on the WSU campus. Seven Deans' Award winners were also recognized for having the highest cumulative grade-point average among all student-athletes in that particular college:

2015-16 WSU Athletics Deans' Award Winners (left to right): Hannah Loesch, Gabby Williams, Aaron Weston, Leah Coonrod, Kaylee Dolinski, Sandra Harris. Not pictured: Elly Maleski.

Celebrating Academic Excellence Wayne State placed a total of 161 student-athletes on GLIAC All-Academic teams this past year. WSU had 66 Warriors on the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team, which recognizes student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better and 95 were named to the All-Academic Team (3.0-3.49 GPA). Criteria states the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season, not a freshman or a first-year transfer student.

• Hannah Loesch - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Women’s Swimming • Gabby Williams - College of Education, Softball • Aaron Weston - School of Business Administration, Football • Sandra Harris - College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts, • Elly Maleski - College of Engineering, Women’s Swimming • Leah Coonrod - College of Nursing, Women’s Cross Country • Kaylee Dolinski - Honors College, Women’s Swimming Twenty-one (21) student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.00 term GPA with a record 66 percent of Warrior student-athletes receiving above a 3.00 for the 2015 Fall semester. "We measure ourselves in athletics – that's why we keep score," said Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. "And this academic performance reflects the hard work and dedication of student-athletes, coaches and staff. To have our highest GPA ever (3.15), and consistently have that success across all programs (14 above a 3.0) is worthy of acknowledgement. When you consider our graduation rate (76%) and community service outreach (10,754 hours in 2014-15) there is a lot to recognize."

"This academic performance reflects the hard work and dedication of student-athletes, coaches and staff." ROB FOURNIER, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
