Varsity Varsity Lamar Baseball:”A Winning Tradition” Lamar Baseball has a rich history of producing well trained players with a good work ethic. For this reason, Lamar provides a fertile recruiting ground for college and professional scouts. In the words of one college coach, Lamar players “know how the game should be played.” Through the years, many different colleges and universities have signed Lamar player. However, three stand out by virtue of their numbers. Houston’s Rice University, for example, has experienced a wealth of success with former Redskin baseball players. Kenny Baugh (’98, Florida Marlins), Hunter Brown (’98, Seattle Mariners), and Nick Martin (’98, Chicago Cubs), all had outstanding careers at Rice and were
Adrian Turnham / Princeton
drafted into minor league programs. In more recent years, Jeff Niemann (’01, Tampa Bay Rays) and Joe Savery (’03, Philadelphia Phillies) each had storied careers at Rice and went on to be drafted. Anthony Rendon was the sixth person drafted in 2011 by the Washington Nationals. Currently, John Williamson (’11) is in the Owls’ baseball program. The Ivy League’s Princeton University also has an established history of signing Lamar players. Former Redskin pitcher Christian Staehely (’04), Seattle Mariners started the Princeton tradition, followed by Adrian Turnham (’05), Brandon Englert (’06), Noel Gonzales-Luna (’06), and currently Sammy Gonzales-Luna (’12).
James Williamson / William and Mary
Virginia’s College of William and Mary also enjoys a rich legacy of former Lamar players. Twin brothers Jon and Will Rhymes (’01) had stellar baseball careers with the Tribe. Will is currently playing with the Washington Nationals. Lamar and W&M outfielder Ben Guez (’05) is currently with the Toledo Mud Hens, a Detroit Tigers Minor League affiliate. Former Redskin James Williamson (’05) was the 2009 Tribe team captain. David Toups (‘11) and Chris Lanham (’12) started a new tradition with their signing with Yale University. Hopefully, the tradition continues…

Tom House Baseball Clinic
Last summer the Lamar baseball coaching staff adopted the principles laid out by pitching authority Dr. Tom House to help pitchers, and all players, safely develop to their fullest potential. Dr. House is recognized as one of the world’s foremost authorities on pitching. He pitched professionally for 12 seasons and has coached various national and international teams since 1980. He continues to coach amateurs in clinic settings. Dr. House and strength trainer, Randy Wishmyer, from the National Pitching Association in Los Angeles, California came to Lamar High School multiple times over the fall semester to work with all of the players on the baseball team. Dr. House’s three main principles to safe and effective development as an athlete are proper conditioning, optimum nutrition, and recognizing the importance of the mental/emotional side of the game. Dr. House not only trained the players on various pitching mechanics but also spent multiple sessions on workout routines. Players will remember learning the Flex T Karaoke, the Wall Drill, and the Hershiser. Players embraced new training methods using dynamic warm-ups, weighted balls, and towel drills. One evening he spoke with both the players and parents about the importance of proper nutrition and collected core measurements to establish baseline data for improvement in strength and flexibility. Lamar Baseball is an ever-evolving program that now utilizes sports science and sports technology to develop the strengths and skills of our players. Congratulations to the coaches for embracing these researched concepts and thanks for taking our players to the next level of fitness.

Varsity Varsity Softball Tournament
First Annual Lamar Softball Tournament In recent years, the baseball players have had a turkey roll sale and a brisket sale before the Gold Card sale. Coach Muñoz replaced the turkey roll and brisket sales with a softball tournament fund raiser. At least one member of the booster club was heard to say that he was glad they didn’t have to buy all that meat. Each baseball player was paired with a Lamar softball player. Each pair of Lamar athletes recruited friends and family to be on their team. The tournament was held December first and second, and ended in a championship. Some teams were very strong. Some teams were not so competitive, but everyone looked like they were having a lot of fun. Each player paid $20 to play. The proceeds were split between the Baseball and Softball teams. The West University Softball Association allowed the tournament to use its fields located between Emery Weiner School and St. Catherine’s Montessori, just south of loop 610. Coach Muñoz intended the tournament to be a team building activity as well. With the time they spent together, the fun they had, and the competition; it is almost certain to play a part in the success our teams have this spring.

“Put me in, coach, I’m ready to play. Look at me, I can be ... centerfield.” Lamar centerfielder Beau “Bobo” Wells wears No. 1 on his jersey because “the past two Lamar centerfiel`ders have worn No. 1, so I’m trying to keep up a young tradition.” When he’s not turning opponents’ triples into outs, Beau likes to golf, hunt and snowboard. He admires his mom Cathy the most and his favorite type of music is country, especially George Strait, Pat Green and Cory Morrow. The coolest thing he owns: an autographed Earl Campbell jersey from his days as a UT Longhorn.

Kirk “Trey” Rummel remembers his favorite baseball moment – “watching Coach Kansas as we beat Bellaire in my freshman year.” Trey’s favorite food is a Pappas bacon cheeseburger. As a pitcher, he doesn’t get to hit very often, which leads us to his secret talent ... “I can actually hit!” In fact, that’s his No. 1 daydream, getting to the plate this season. You listening, Coach Munoz? The coolest thing he owns is a “fully functional car.” Trey has one of the best favorite quotes – “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count,
its the life in your years,” said by Abraham Lincoln, who also rarely batted. If Trey could trade lives with anyone, it’d be a professional golfer ... any professional golfer. 2013

Cravon “Sick-Wit-It” has the best favorite quote on the team – “Rent’s due and may God help you, cuz we won’t!” In addition to patrolling the outfield for Lamar, Sick-Wit-It was named to the All-District football team. He enjoys going to the movies, bowling and eating. His favorite food is “everything.” The person Sick-Wit-It most admires is President Barack Obama. If he could trade places with anybody, it would be billionaire Bill Gates. It takes a lot of money when your favorite food is “everything.” The coolest thing he owns is “my Bible and cross necklace.” His goal for the immediate future is playing football at Morgan State University.

Glenn “King Pin” Anderson pitches and plays outfield, but his secret talent is “playing the infield.” What? You don’t play catcher, too? His favorite quote is, “Go hard or go home.” King Pin likes seafood, Sammy Sosa and hip-hop music. His favorite comedian is Katt Williams. If he could throw a pie in a celebrity’s kisser, it would be Curtis Payne. King Pin’s favorite non-baseball athlete is Anquan Boldin. His favorite pizza is from Pizza Hut, and favorite comic is Katt Williams. When he’s daydreaming, King Pin is at bat with the “game on the line.”

Zachary “Zig-Zag” Pearson is planning on playing basball at a Division 1 college. His favorite expression is “that’s awkward,” but there was nothing awkward about the time he hit a grand slam homer two games in a row in Little League. His most admired person is “my parents.” Zig-Zag may have a career in politics with an answer like that. The coolest thing he owns is an autographed Ted Williams baseball card. His favorite late-night talk host is Jimmy Fallon who, like Zig-Zag, has big things looming in his future.
John Doxakis #8

John “Dox” Doxakis likes country music and Philly cheesesteaks. His words to live by: “Treat people the way you wanna be treated.” His favorite place to hang is at friends’ houses. His goal is to play Division I college baseball. His favorite baseball player is fellow lefty pitcher Cliff Lee. Dox is a Jay Leno fan in late night TV. Better not get use to that – sounds like Leno is on his way out at NBC. His favorite pizza joint is Sal’s in New York. The coolest thing he owns are his omni-present Oakley sunglasses. If he could throw a cream pie in a celebrity’s face, it would be Will Ferrell. The comedian that makes him laugh the most is Adam Sandler. After a long workout, Dox likes to destroy a brownie. 2013

Matthew “Bo” Nerz has a terrific favorite quotation: “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Confucius said that. Bo’s favorite dish is egg fu yung. The person he admires most is his dad, Thomas. Bo knows country music and Fuzzy’s Pizza. His favorite talkshow host is Jimmy Fallon. If Bo could throw a cream pie in a celebrity’s kisser, it’d be Tom Brady because “he’s a clown.” Bo’s favorite baseball player is fellow backstop Yadier Molina. His favorite non-baseball athlete is Kevin Durant. Bo’s preferred excuse for not turning in his homework is the time-honored classic, “My dog ate it.” After a workout, he enjoys stuffing his face at Whataburger.

After a hard workout, he likes to drown his sorrows at Whataburger. If he could trade places with a famous person, it would be Mike Trout of the Angels. John “Fallooo” Fallon is an artist at more than playing third base - his secret talent is painting. His favorite baseball players are Evan Longoria and Troy Tulowitzki. When he’s not playing baseball on the Lamar field, he’s usually hanging out at ... Lamar field. Fallooo’s favorite comic is impressionist Frank Caliendo. His favorite baseball memory is winning a national title with the Banditos. The hardest ball he ever hit sailed over the pool at Lamar. Who’s his favorite latenight talk show host? Community Service
On Sunday, March 24th, the Varsity Players helped Zach Pearson build a Community Garden. It was a great opportunity for the baseball team to give back to the community and help Zach out with his International Baccalaureate Project. The project was designed to do something that would have a positive effect on peoples’ lives now and in the future. Zach decided to build a community vegetable garden the Community Family Centers located in the Magnolia area of the east end. Zach and his Dad have been volunteering at the community center for the past six years and love the organization. Recently Community Family Centers opened up a new building, called the JP McGovern Center. Its purpose is to provide a place for kids to go hang out after school, and ultimately keep them out of gangs. The CFC and Zach decided that a community garden would be the best choice for both the kids that go to the McGovern after school program, and for the community. The kids would have a great opportunity to learn about good nutrition and basic gardening skills, and become self-sufficient. The varsity team and Coach Romero moved 17 yards of dirt and placed about 7 pallets of heavy blocks (each pallet weighed about 2,400 pounds) to create two 39 feet x 6 feet raised bed gardens.
