Introduction
L
Hello from Lamar Baseball, Welcome to our HISD program, where we offer student-athletes the best opportunity to receive an internationally accredited education while also achieving their highest athletic potential. In our program, young athletes learn to understand the sport within an environment that emphasizes personal character, integrity, and respect for the game of baseball and all its participants. Lamar baseball is committed to excellence on and off the field, beginning in the classroom. Among our baseball alumni, we can point to current students or graduates from universities including Columbia, Yale, Princeton, the US Naval Academy, West Point, Rice, the University of Houston, the University of Texas, Texas A & M, Sam Houston State, the College of William and Mary, Tulane, Texas Christian University, Texas Tech, and Trinity, among many others. Players from our current class of 2014 graduates have committed to play at Harvard University, West Virginia University, the University of Maryland, Millsaps College, and San Jacinto College. Beyond the collegiate level, many Lamar baseball graduates play or have played for professional organizations such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Colorado Rockies, Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Washington Nationals. Lamar’s program has produced four MLB first round draft picks and All-Americans from Rice University: Kenny Baugh (’97), Jeff Niemann (’01), Joe Savery (’04), and Anthony Rendon (’08). The same standards and discipline that produced these professional players continue to develop the young men in our program today. We continue to challenge our student-athletes with high expectations and a process-oriented philosophy, which come together to prepare them for success not only at Lamar High School, but also through their college years and beyond. Through the values it models and the results it expects, the baseball program at Lamar encourages players to realize their greatest potential in all areas of life. Simply stated, we practice excellence – on and off the field. I would like to thank all of our players’ families, our alumni, and the school administration for the support necessary to lead this program into the future as we move toward more championships and more academic achievements for our future student-athletes. Sincerely,
David Munoz Head Baseball Coach 2014 Lamar Baseball Media Guide

Front Row: Matthew Nerz, Tucker Cascadden & John Fallon Back Row: Coach Doctor, Coach Roberts & Coach Munoz
Senior catcher Matthew Nerz has committed to play Terapins baseball at the University of Maryland. Matthew was recruited by a wide range of schools, from the Ivy League to junior colleges. He selected Maryland after visiting the campus and meeting with head coach Jeff Szefc and his staff this fall. Matthew plays for the Houston Heat Black during his summers and was recruited by the Terapins coaching staff when they first saw Matthew in Atlanta during the Perfect Game 17U National Championships. The Maryland Terapins play in the extremely competitive ACC and last year played the fifth strongest schedule in the nation facing LSU, North Carolina, NC State and a number of other national powerhouses. Tucker Cascadden, All-District shortstop for the last three seasons, has committed to play baseball for the West Virginia Mountaineers. Tucker was heavily recruited by a number of Division I powerhouses and selected the Mountaineers after a home visit by Head Coach Mazey at the end of July. Coach Mazey saw Tucker play for Team Texas at this year’s Sunbelt Tournament and closely followed his progress throughout the summer. The Mountaineers baseball team has been a member of the Big 12 Conference since the start of the 2013 season, posting a record of 33-25. The program has appeared in 11 NCAA Tournaments, it has won five conference tournament championships and 15 regular season conference and division titles. Infielder John Fallon has committed to play baseball for Harvard University. The Crimson began recruiting John his sophomore year, and he committed to Coach Decker and the Harvard Crimson in July 2013. John was heavily recruited by most Ivies and highly competitive Texas and California D1 schools. John had competitive outings at the WWBA World Championship, Arizona Fall Classic, PG WWBA 17u Championship and was an Under Armour Pre-Season All-American invitee, All-District selection and HABCA 5A All-Star. John is a straight A student in the International Baccalaureate Program, has SAT scores in the top 1% nationally, and is a member of the National Honor Society and is president and founder of Gloves for Good, Inc. 8

“A Winning Tradition”
L
Lamar Baseball has a rich history of producing well-trained players with a strong work ethic. Through the years, many different colleges and universities have signed Lamar players. Rice University has experienced a wealth of success with former Lamar baseball players. Kenny Baugh (’98), Hunter Brown (’98), and Nick Martin (’98) each had outstanding careers at Rice. After Rice each was drafted by major league baseball teams: Baugh by the Detroit Tigers, Brown by the Seattle Mariners, and Martin by the Chicago Cubs. More recently Jeff Niemann (’01), Joe Savery (’04) and Anthony Rendon (’08) played for Rice and have gone on to play for major league teams. In 2011, Rendon was the No.6 draft pick by the Washington Nationals and in 2013 made his major league debut. Currently John Williamson (’11) is in his third year at Rice playing outfield and pitcher.
Anthony Rendon ‘08
Princeton University has an established history of signing Lamar players. Former pitcher Christian Staehely (’04) and Seattle Mariners draftee, started the Princeton tradition followed by Adrian Turnham (’05), Brandon Englert (’06), Noel Gonzales-Luna (’06), and Sammy Gonzales-Luna (’12). Virginia’s College of William and Mary has recruited several Lamar players. Twin brothers Jon and Will Rhymes (’01) had stellar baseball careers with the Tribe. Will was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2005 and made his major league debut in 2010. In 2012 he played for the Tampa Bay Rays. Outfielder Ben Guez (’05) is currently playing with the Toledo Mud Hens, a Detroit Tigers affiliate. Most recently James Williamson (’05 ) played for William and Mary and was the capitain of the 2009 Tribe.
Jeff Niemann ‘01
Yale University recruited David Toups (‘11) and Chris Lanham (’12). This year John Fallon (’14) was recruited by Harvard University to play for The Crimson. Harvard’s baseball program offers student athletes the best of both the academic and athletic worlds. Harvard baseball players continue to make names for themselves in the professional ranks as well. There are currently more than 20 former Harvard baseball players plying their trade in professional baseball. These are just a few of the schools that have recruited Lamar Baseball players, and numerous other Schools have recruited Redskins as well. In the words of one college coach, Lamar players “know how the game should be played.”

summer ball
Fewer than ten percent of all youth baseball players will ever play high school baseball, let alone college or pro ball. Only six percent of high school seniors go on to play NCAA baseball—all divisions. Of that elite group, nine percent will play professional ball at any level. Less than one percent of high school players will be drafted. But for those in high school who are talented and hope to reach the next level, whether that’s college or pro ball, showcases and travel ball have become an essential part of the process. During the summer, baseball players from Lamar High School fill many of the roster spots on some of the best travel and showcase teams in Houston. The tournament and showcase season starts in late May when school lets out, accelerates in June and July and can last until September. Travel teams can find themselves in a new city almost every week. Participation at this level provides Lamar baseball players the opportunity to compete alongside many of the premier players in the area and against the best players across the country. Houston teams participate in tournaments and showcases not only in Texas but in states such as California, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Louisiana. Because baseball demands repetition to build skills, summer ball is also an excellent opportunity for Lamar baseball players to hone their talents during the off-season. It’s also an opportunity to demonstrate their baseball skills in front of college coaches and professional scouts. As recruiting budgets continue to dwindle for many colleges and universities, the opportunity for coaches and scouts to see numerous prospects in one location has become imperative. During the summer months they can easily see as many as 40 teams a weekend. Lamar Baseball has a rich history of producing players that can compete at the highest levels of the game. Their participation playing for the best travel and showcase teams in the country is a testament to the success of Lamar’s baseball program.

strength & conditioning
L
Lamar Baseball’s off-season strength and conditioning program is a vital part of its tradition of success. Evaluation, goal-orientated programs, supervision and various training techniques are all utilized to help Lamar’s baseball players become bigger, faster, stronger and more flexible. Many of the principles adopted and techniques being used have been developed by former MLB pitcher Tom House. House pitched for the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and Seattle Mariners. He coached from 1980 to 1997 for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Chiba Lotte Marines (Japan), as well as in Latin America. On the amateur level, House is an information and instruction coordinator for numerous baseball academies across the United States and Canada. He directly assesses thousands of players, coaches, and parents each year in clinic settings and travels the world as an international consultant, performance analyst, and sports psychologist. House and strength trainer Randy Wishmyer came to Lamar High School multiple times over the fall semester to work with all of the players on the baseball team. They not only trained the players on various pitching mechanics but also spent multiple sessions on workout routines. Players will remember learning the Flex T Karaoke, the Wall Drill, and the Hershiser. Players embraced new training methods using dynamic warm-ups, weighted balls, and towel drills. They learned about the importance of proper nutrition and collected core measurements to establish baseline data for tracking their improvements in strength and flexibility.
Tom House
Tom House is considered by many to be the “father of modern pitching mechanics.” He is the founder of The Rod Dedeaux Research and Baseball Institute (RDRBI) and the National Pitching Association (NPA). The RDRBI and NPA are renowned for their health and performance research and development involving three-dimensional analysis of human movement, physical preparation and training to support rotational athletes in movement, identifying the metabolic requirements of proper nutrition to fuel human activity, and mentoring athletes’ competition with mental/ emotional management skills. Lamar Baseball is an ever-evolving program that utilizes sports science and technology to develop the strengths and skills of its players. Congratulations to the coaches for embracing these techniques and thanks for taking our players to the next level of fitness.

fall ball
The start of school in late August also marks the start of fall baseball for Lamar’s baseball players. Under the direction of volunteer coaches, multiple teams were formed, and players participated in fall leagues and tournaments throughout the Houston area. Fall is a time for players to develop skills. Pitchers who didn’t throw enough in the summer can get more innings or work on throwing different pitches. Hitters get additional at bats, can work on hitting balls to the opposite field, or practice base-stealing skills. Defensively, players can learn another position, catchers can practice blocking skills, and everyone is given opportunities to practice what they have learned in live game situations. Coaches this year included Lamar Baseball alumni Chat Lenhart (‘99), Cat Everett (‘04), James Williamson (‘05), Anthony Flenoy (‘07) and Peter Goudeau (‘08). All had extremely successful high school baseball careers and all played college baseball. Cat Everett (‘04) was drafted by the Houston Astros following his career at Tulane University. They were excellent mentors to the Lamar Baseball players they instructed.

The second annual Lamar Slow Pitch Classic Softball Tournament took place December 14-15th benefiting Lamar High School’s baseball and softball programs. Twenty-four teams competed for a championship at the West University Softball Association’s softball fields. Each participant paid $25 and all proceeds were split between the two programs. The tournament opened with the Slow Pitch Sluggers against the Space Jammers and the Vaqueros against I’d Hit That. By the end of the day, eight teams were left standing to play Sunday. The championship game was a hardfought battle between the Bombers and Platypi with the Platypi coming out on top 7-5. lamar high school
L
Lamar has the largest dual-credit program in the city, offering juniors and seniors the opportunity to receive college credit in four different courses: psychology, senior English, economics and government. Lamar offers five foreign languages (Chinese, French, Italian, Russian and Spanish), as well as agriculture, architecture, culinary arts, debate, engineering, horticulture, journalism, television broadcasting, and a host of other electives. Lamar has a foreign exchange program with sister schools in China and Japan. Opened in 1936, Mirabeau B. Lamar High School, one of 38 high schools in the Houston Independent School District, is an urban comprehensive public school with challenging academic programs designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body. Lamar’s environment stimulates critical thinking, responsible citizenship, ethical behavior, and a respect for individual differences.
Lamar has the only business administration magnet program in HISD, with course offerings in accounting, banking, finance and economics.
Lamar is a “recognized” school—the first comprehensive high school in HISD to achieve that status.
Lamar offers a variety of sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, diving, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, swimming, track, volleyball, water polo, and wrestling.
Lamar is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, with one of the largest IB programs in North America. In 2011, 104 Lamar graduates, or 14% of the graduating class, received the IB Diploma. Lamar offers 69 Advanced Academic classes in English, math, science, social studies, fine arts, and foreign languages. The highest level is IBD/HL or AP. Lamar offers 42 IB classes to students in grades eleven and twelve and 23 Pre-DP (Diploma Program) classes to students in grades nine and ten.
Lamar has a horticultural curriculum with a learning center for science programs. A stateof-the art computer controlled greenhouse is located next to the natatorium.
Lamar offers a variety of fine arts, including art, art history, band, choir, dance, hip hop, music theory, orchestra, piano, theatre and visual arts. Lamar has over 70 clubs and organizations ranging from FFA to the Bowling Club to Academic Decathlon. Lamar has an on-campus credit union that serves teachers and staff as well as students. Senior business students have the opportunity for a paid internship in the bank.
