introduction Hello from Lamar Baseball, Welcome to our HISD program, where we offer student-athletes the best opportunity to receive an internationally accredited education while also achieving their highest athletic potential. In our program, young athletes learn to understand the sport within an environment that emphasizes personal character, integrity, and respect for the game of baseball and all its participants. Lamar baseball is committed to excellence on and off the field, beginning in the classroom. Among our baseball alumni, we can point to current students or graduates from universities including Columbia, Yale, Princeton, the US Naval Academy, West Point, Rice, the University of Houston, the University of Texas, Texas A & M, Sam Houston State, the College of William and Mary, Tulane, Texas Christian University, Texas Tech, and Trinity, among many others. Players from our current class of 2015 graduates have committed to play at Richland College, Rhodes College, Wharton College, Trinity University, College of William and Mary, Galveston College and University of Dallas. Beyond the collegiate level, many Lamar baseball graduates play or have played for professional organizations such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Washington Nationals. Lamar’s program has produced four MLB first round draft picks and All-Americans from Rice University: Kenny Baugh (’97), Jeff Niemann (’01), Joe Savery (’04), and Anthony Rendon (’08). The same standards and discipline that produced these professional players continue to develop the young men in our program today. We continue to challenge our student-athletes with high expectations and a process-oriented philosophy, which come together to prepare them for success not only at Lamar High School, but also through their college years and beyond. Through the values it models and the results it expects, the baseball program at Lamar encourages players to realize their greatest potential in all areas of life. Simply stated, we practice excellence – on and off the field. I would like to thank all of our players’ families, our alumni, and the school administration for the support necessary to lead this program into the future as we move toward more championships and more academic achievements for our future student-athletes. Sincerely,
David Munoz Head Baseball Coach

FACILITIES
Lamar Baseball boast the Houston Independant School
District’s top high school baseball facility. They play on Bill
Poland Field located on the southwest corner of the Lamar High School campus near the football and track fields.
In 2011 the baseball field and adjacent areas underwent a major renovation and now feature facilities that allow
baseball players to work out year round on a professional quality field.
Bill Poland Field features dugouts, 2 bullpens, covered and uncovered cages, restrooms, concessions, seating for fans and a professional scoreboard. The covered 75 ft. batting cages are equipped with portable pitching mounds, two
baseball pitching machines, metal halide floodlights and
enough room for players to work on all their baseball skills rain or shine.
Bill Poland Field measures 325 ft down the left field line, 290 ft down the right field line, and 375 ft to center field.
The left field power alley measures 360 ft and the right field power alley measures 340 ft. The fields playing surface is natural grass (Bermuda).

“A WINNING TRADITION” Lamar Baseball has a rich history of producing well-trained players with a strong work ethic. Through the years, many different colleges and universities have signed Lamar players.
Rice University has experienced a wealth of success with former Lamar baseball players. Kenny Baugh (’98), Hunter Brown (’98), and Nick
Martin (’98) each had outstanding careers at Rice. After Rice each was drafted by major league baseball teams: Baugh by the Detroit Tigers,
Brown by the Seattle Mariners, and Martin by the Chicago Cubs. More
recently Jeff Niemann (’01), Joe Savery (’04) and Anthony Rendon (’08) played for Rice and have gone on to play for major league teams. In
2011, Rendon was the No.6 draft pick by the Washington Nationals and in 2013 made his major league debut. Currently John Williamson (’11)
is a senior at Rice playing outfield and pitcher. Brandt Frazier (14’) is a freshman playing catcher.
John Williamson ‘11 Rice University
Princeton University has an established history of signing Lamar
players. Former pitcher Christian Staehely (’04) and Seattle Mariners draftee, started the Princeton tradition followed by Adrian Turnham
(’05), Brandon Englert (’06), Noel Gonzales-Luna (’06), and Sammy Gonzales-Luna (’12).
Virginia’s College of William and Mary has recruited several Lamar
players. Twin brothers Jon and Will Rhymes (’01) had stellar baseball careers with the Tribe. Will was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2005
and made his major league debut in 2010. In 2012 he played for the
Tampa Bay Rays. Outfielder Ben Guez (’05) is currently playing with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, a Milwaukee Brewers class AAA affiliate. Most recently James Williamson (’05) played for William and Mary
and was the capitain of the 2009 Tribe. Senior Zach Pearson (‘15) has committed to play baseball for William and Mary next season.
Ian Gibaut ‘13 Tulane University
Yale University recruited David Toups (‘11) and Chris Lanham (’12). Last year John Fallon (’14) was recruited by Harvard University to play for The Crimson. Harvard’s baseball program offers student athletes the
best of both the academic and athletic worlds. Harvard baseball players continue to make names for themselves in the professional ranks as
well. There are currently more than 20 former Harvard baseball players plying their trade in professional baseball.
These are just a few of the schools that have recruited Lamar Baseball players, and numerous other schools have recruited Lamar players as well. In the words of one college coach, Lamar players “know how the game should be played.”

OFF-SEASON BASEBALL During the summer, baseball players from Lamar High School fill
many of the roster spots on some of the best tournament and travel
teams in Houston. The season starts in late May when school lets out,
accelerates in June and July and can last until September. Participation
at this level provides Lamar baseball players the opportunity to compete alongside many of the premier players in the area and against the best players across the country. Travel teams can find themselves in a new city almost every week.
Because baseball demands repetition to build skills, summer ball is
also an excellent opportunity for Lamar baseball players to hone their
talents during the off-season. And for those wanting to play at the next level, it’s an excellent time to demonstrate their baseball skills in front
of college coaches and professional scouts by attending college camps and showcases.
Lamar Baseball has a rich history of producing players that can compete at the highest levels of the game. Playing for travel teams, attending
college camps and participating in showcases across the country is a testament to the success of Lamar’s baseball program.
Houston Heat player and 2015 College of William & Mary commitment Zach Pearson (‘15).
Winners of the 2014 Senior League World Series team U.S. Southwest included eight current Lamar baseball players on the 16 man roster. The team was also coached by former Lamar baseball player, Cape Bell (‘04).

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Lamar Baseball’s off-season strength and conditioning program is a vital part of its tradition of success. Evaluation, goal-orientated programs, supervision and various training techniques are all utilized to help
Lamar’s baseball players become bigger, faster, stronger and more flexible.
Many of the principles adopted and techniques being used have been
developed by former MLB pitcher Tom House. House is considered by many to be the “father of modern pitching mechanics.”
House and strength trainer Randy Wishmyer came to Lamar High School multiple times over the fall semester to work with all of the
players on the baseball team. They not only trained the players on
various pitching mechanics but also spent multiple sessions on workout routines.
Lamar Baseball is an ever-evolving program that utilizes sports science and technology to develop the strengths and skills of its players.
Congratulations to the coaches for embracing these techniques and thanks for taking our players to the next level of fitness.

Fall is a time for players to develop skills.
Pitchers work on new pitches. Catchers practice
blocking skills. Hitters work on hitting balls to

and everyone is given opportunities to practice what they have learned in live game situations.
