Welcome to DeviceTalks Boston!

M

y Medtech origin story can be told within a seven-mile radius of the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. I grew up six miles north of here, went to college six miles to the west, and started my career covering the medical device industry just a mile away. So I’m qualified to say our industry doesn’t get the attention it deserves in the local business pages, coffee shops, and backyard conversations. This is one of the principal reasons I joined DeviceTalks in November 2019 - to build out a platform that enabled medical device leaders to tell their Medtech stories. The pandemic kept us from gathering in-person. But two years I spent creating our DeviceTalks podcasts and our DeviceTalks Tuesday digital seminar series helped deepen my understanding and respect for the medical device industry — both globally and, yes, locally. The DeviceTalks Boston program you see here is the physical presentation of the lessons learned. I learned that PROTOTYPE & PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT will never be the same following the pandemic. To explain the changes, we secured discussions with leaders from Abbott, Ambu, Boston Scientific, Corindus, Medtronic and others. The supply chain squeeze is disrupting

MANUFACTURING, SOURCING & SUPPLY CHAIN so we’re excited to have experienced executives from Boston Scientific, DePuy Synthes, Vapotherm, Viant and 3DEO share their solutions. We’ll go directly to the source — the Medical Device Manufacturers Association — to understand how ongoing political uncertainty will impact REGULATORY, REIMBURSEMENT & POLICY. Medtech leaders from major Medtronic and Boston Scientific will also explain how they’re making clinical trials more representative of patient populations. Stryker, Avail Medsystems, Proximie, DePuy Synthes and others will explore the impact of new DIGITAL TOOLS & TECHNOLOGY in the OR, patient rooms and across the healthcare spectrum. Finally, we’re going to the root of all new technologies, INNOVATION & INVESTMENT. Our partner, MedTech Innovator, the world’s largest medical device incubator, selected 30 medical device startups to tell their own stories. Finally, both days will start with inspiring personal stories from local Medtech leaders. On Day 1, Frank J. Doyle III, one of the pioneers of the artificial pancreas and now dean of the Harvard Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, will use his own experiences to help us envision an

industry fully capitalizing on AI, robotics and other revolutionary technologies. On Day 2, Shacey Petrovic, CEO of Insulet, will recount the remarkable success of Ominipod 5 and give us a glimpse into how the company sees the future of helping people with diabetes manage their care. Finally, your two days will be amplified by the work being done by my colleagues at the Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum and Robotics Summit & Expo. You’re invited to sit in on their discussion and, of course, visit our expansive Exhibition Floor to meet the companies making all this creation possible. Thanks for attending and be sure you share your story. If you don’t do it, who will? Go Medtech,

A Welcome, A Challenge, And A Solution

W

elcome to the Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum! It seems incredible that over two years have passed since the inaugural Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum (HREF) took place. That event, held in Silicon Valley, brought together a wide variety of technical and business professionals chartered with producing the next generation of healthcare robotics solutions for two days of education, face-to-face networking, and business development. Following the success of the HREF 2019, it was decided to relocate the 2020 conference to Boston, one of the world’s premier robotics clusters, and recognized globally as a leading ‘hub’ for medical research and healthcare innovation. And then...

healthcare challenges, and as a key means to provide better healthcare services while controlling costs. But despite the monumental potential of healthcare robotics technologies and obvious need, commercial development of healthcare robotic products has been relatively slow.

The Challenge Even as the world recovers from medical crises of the last two years, healthcare systems remain under stress. The various medical, social and business imperatives to improve healthcare, while reducing costs, act as powerful demand drivers for all manner of solutions - including robotics technologies. Robotics technology is viewed by healthcare professionals, business leaders and government officials as playing a major role in addressing a wide range of pressing

Welcome Again So welcome to the Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum! Like you, I look forward to two days of insightful keynotes, compelling sessions and panels, the supplier showcases, and of course, face-to-face, peer networking with the international healthcare robotics community.

The Solution What is required is a new class of event specifically constructed to provide engineers and engineering management with the technical information and guidance they need to more quickly and easily design, develop and manufacture the next generation of commercial class healthcare robotics systems. That event is the Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum.

We also added a bonus track this year about autonomous mobile robots. I hope you also enjoy the expo floor, which has greatly expanded. More than 100 companies are showcasing their latest products and services that can help bring your robots to life. We also have networking opportunities, a career fair produced by MassRobotics, a design for additive manufacturing workshop led by HP, a chance to demo Boston Dynamics’ Spot quadruped and other special activities planned for you. In addition, the Robotics Summit is co-located with the Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum and DeviceTalks Boston.

26

The Healthcare Robotics Engineering Forum focuses on the development of next-generation healthcare robots, while DeviceTalks Boston is designed for professionals who are shaping the future of the medical device industry. Robotics Summit attendees have full access to both of those events, too. Thank you to all of our speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge with us. Thank you to our sponsors for sharing their product knowledge and demonstrating their commitment to the commercial robotics industry. And thanks to you, our attendees, who are making the Robotics Summit & Expo a success. You have made this a necessary force in the commercial robotics industry. We will be posting pictures and videos to all of our social media channels. Follow along, post your own photos, and be sure to use our hashtag #RSE2022. I hope you enjoy the Robotics Summit & Expo here at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Please say hello if you have the chance. It’s great to be back. Sincerely,

Steve Crowe
