FIRST WORD
Three cheers to the
2022 Top Solar Contractors! The Top Solar Contractors List provides a unique opportunity each year to come up for air from the daily slog to reflect on how successful the previous year really was. In 2021, we were deep in the second year of coronavirus interruptions, tariff battles were increasing and supply chains delayed timelines. And yet, we finished the year better than we thought possible. The companies in our Top 10 may change each year, but the one thing that stays constant is everincreasing installation numbers. The Top 10 of the 2022 Top Solar Contractors list completed 2 GW more than last year’s top-performing contractors. It’s truly an amazing accomplishment we’re happy to recognize here. Before we overanalyze and worry about the end of this year, let’s celebrate the 2022 class of top solar installation companies in the United States. Congratulations on leading the industry! We also want to congratulate our Solar Champions who are making a difference in their communities and workplaces to ensure success for years to come. Check out our individual award winners later in this issue.
We’ve said it before, but the Top Solar Contractors awards season is our favorite here at Solar Power World. Hearing about the small success stories we may have missed while fretting about current issues gives us all the warm feelings everyone should be basking in every day working in an industry as important as renewable energy. Remember: You’re making a difference in many lives every day. Thank you! SPW

Installer: SOLV Energy (No. 1 Utility Contractor) Aquamarine Solar Stratford, California 325 MW
Like our industry partners, much of the last year came with shifting schedules and close coordination between our teams and clients to accommodate supply chain delays and trade issues. Despite these challenges, the demand for clean energy and utility-scale solar deployment continues to be strong. In recent months, solar has received vocal support from all sides of the government, showing that our industry is becoming the energy force we should be. – George Hershman, CEO

As the leader in solar charge controllers since 1993, SureSine is the inverter line our customers asked us to build. And our competitors will wish we hadn’t. SureSine starts with the same industry-leading quality and performance standards of our charge controllers and adds a long list of advanced inverter features and technologies: full communications capabilities, wireless utility apps, seamless system integration, multiple AC wiring options, and more. We also built-in the safety, noise and performance standards required to achieve industry-leading NRTL conformance certifications—a unique advantage in this class of inverters.
With six power classes ranging from 300 to 2500 Watts offering models with 120 or 230V output and 12, 24 or 48V DC input options, there’s a Morningstar SureSine perfect for your next project

Megger presents … Solutions for the solar technician!
Megger rolled out a solar testing toolkit to improve standards for PV system quality control checks at the point of commissioning and during routine operations and maintenance. The toolkit is comprised of the following four instruments: n
Our insulation resistance tester, the MIT2500, is the perfect tool to ensure and validate system safety, preventing damaged wires from causing ground faults, electrical shock, and fire hazards. The MIT2500 includes a unique guard terminal that helps avoid inaccurate diagnostic results from surface leakage currents.
n
Our digital clamp meter, the DCM1500S, gives solar technicians the flexibility to measure and record voltages up to 2000 V DC true RMS up to 1500 V AC and amperages up to 1500 A on the AC and DC sides of the system.
n
When you need an irradiance meter to validate system performance, just hold our PVM210 in the palm of your hand. Point the sensor in the same direction as the solar modules to see how much sunlight is striking the array.
n
To check for hotspots on the front or backside of a PV array that can lead to reduced production or safety hazards, use our thermal camera, the TC3231. By blending thermal images over normal camera images, the TC3231 can also pinpoint bad wiring connections within combiner boxes, inverters, and AC panelboards.

Installer: Solar Source (No. 14 Florida Contractor) Broward County Government Center West Parking Garage Fort Lauderdale, Florida 400 kW
The past year was both prosperous and stressful for the Florida solar industry as a whole. While we saw advances in solar adoption and overall installed capacity, the fear of losing net metering loomed over us. Fortunately, Gov. DeSantis vetoed the bill and saved the Florida solar market from catastrophic consequences. – Rick Gilbert, Executive Vice President

Installer: Solar Landscape (No. 1 New Jersey Contractor) Community solar project North Bergen, New Jersey 1.6 MW
As the promise of community solar continues to spread nationally, we are thrilled to work with commercial real estate companies to pair their ESG goals with new revenue streams by putting solar panels on large warehouses. By leasing their rooftops for community solar installations — like the 1.6-MW commercial rooftop in North Bergen — these real estate leaders can play a vital role in giving low- and moderate-income households a weapon in the fight against climate change. – Shaun Keegan, CEO

Installer: EIS Solar (No. 4 Pennsylvania Contractor) We built several multi-megawatt
FedEx Ground HQ parking canopy Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 3.4 MW
projects in 2021 that utilized otherwise unusable space for our clients’ core businesses. From installing custom rooftop steel structures that create shaded outdoor spaces, to covering parking lots with canopies, to powering airports using landfill surfaces, we have taken the throwaway spaces of the C&I market and turned them into green power plants. We take the time to design custom solutions for our clients that synergize with their operations, often creating additional value beyond the solar array. – Joe Morinville, President

Installer: Signal Energy (No. 1 Texas Contractor) Juno Solar Borden County, Texas 412 MW
Signal Energy has a rich history in the state of Texas dating back to 2005. In total, we have built and delivered 2,937 MW of renewable energy since 2005, and this year we remain committed by building multiple projects with the potential of 868 MW going into the grid. These are great numbers, but the fact that renewable energy is keeping the Texas grid from faltering, like years before, is a testament to the power of what we are doing in Texas. – Ryan Johnson, President

Utility-scale contractor translates wind expertise to growing solar market BY KE LLY PIC KE RE L
Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives (IEA) is a major force in heavy civil construction. Through its subsidiary White Construction, the company is consistently battling with market leader Mortenson for the top wind power EPC in the country. It’s really no surprise that after constructing well over 23 GW of wind projects across the United States and Canada, IEA thought it was time to get more invested in the solar industry. Joe Broom, senior VP of solar, said IEA (No. 19) had worked on solar projects in the past, mostly in Canada, but the focus shifted in 2019 to the expanding U.S. market. “[IEA] had dabbled in solar, but wind

was their bread and butter,” he said. “The board made a strategic decision to target other renewable segments, notably solar. They gave me a five-year annual operating plan and we basically met that in Year 3. The solar market, despite all of the challenges, remains very robust because there aren’t enough quality EPCs in the market to handle all of the work that’s in the queue.” IEA initially took on projects under 100 MW to “get the confidence back up,” Broom said. Today, the company is more streamlined, only working with two or three component suppliers to fully learn effective installation processes to finish projects efficiently and quickly. IEA
is now bidding on much larger projects and keeping very busy. “One quarter this year, our solar revenues were on par with the wind revenues,” Broom said. “It’s not surprising to me, but I think [to others at IEA], it’s kind of a shock to the system,” especially since wind contracts are staying steady even though the United States is transitioning to an offshore construction market. While Broom describes White Construction’s dominance in the wind construction market as something the company fell into after subcontracting on an early wind farm, the company’s rise in the solar charts is working according to plan.

“When we went public [in 2018], it gave us an opportunity to bring in board members with skill sets and expertise in other industries. That’s the strategy: to not put all your eggs in one basket, to look at other segments — solar being a perfect example,” he said. “We’ve also started a battery storage practice, so we’re planting seeds. We’re doing a lot organically to broaden our growth into renewables, not just specifically wind.” Broom said one of the advantages of working with a large company is leveraging its workforce. “That is one of the top constraints in the market — the availability of labor. We already have a labor force on the wind side that we can easily cycle through on the solar side,” he said. “While labor is a challenge, and of course we would like to pull in as many local hires as we can on these projects, we still have a good abundance of labor within our current ranks that we can leverage. That’s been the secret sauce as to why we’ve been able to make the pivot and grow so rapidly.” While solar may be a stronger focus for IEA right now, the company is not forgetting about wind. “Internally, there’s still a tremendous amount of excitement on wind,” Broom said. “Every week we go through the opportunities for wind and solar, and sure, wind may be getting a little tougher but there are still opportunities out there. I don’t think we’ve reduced the amount of bidding effort on the wind side. But we’ve certainly amped up the bidding effort on the solar side.” SPW

For some companies, that meant unconscious bias trainings or reading assignments. For others, it meant taking a hard look at its company makeup and investing in resources to make it more representative of the country’s population.

Minnesota-based Blattner (No. 2) was one such company that has been consciously celebrating and promoting diversity. The company brought in Shannon Lueck as inclusion and diversity program manager. said. "It's about the culture we create, and one way we create an inclusive culture is by attracting and developing great, diverse talent.” For Lueck, inclusion starts with an assessment of the company's current employee makeup. Although Blattner didn't share exact numbers, Lueck said the company is exceeding national labor statistics for women in construction. According to 2021 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor

Family business falls into solar — and loves it enough to go full-time BY B I LLY LU DT
There are many roads that lead to a career in the solar industry, and STG Solar (No. 44) of Brevard, North Carolina, was brought here by fulfilling a favor. Founder and president Mike Kilpatrick started the electrical subcontractor Southern Tradesmen Service Group back in 2011. Business then was strictly electrical, laying lines in new construction projects for clients like hotel chains and big-box retailers. STG’s reputation as an experienced electrical subcontractor inspired a friend of Kilpatrick’s to reach out and ask if the company could help with some electrical work on a “solar farm” commissioned by

Facebook in North Carolina in 2014. “A solar what? I was clueless. I didn’t know what he was talking about,” he said. Kilpatrick brought several crews to the project site and was immediately taken by the prospect of generating electricity through sunlight at this scale. Shortly after, Kilpatrick and his crews were contracted to salvage electrical work on another solar project in Rosedale. “To tell you the truth, it was far more gratifying building a power plant in the middle of a field as opposed to going and wiring up the next big-box retailer,” Kilpatrick said. “I really at that point in time didn’t know if I would go 100% solar,
but the next thing you know, everybody is asking for us, requesting us and asking how many farms a year we can build. So here we go — that’s what we do now.” After some research into the industry, the company changed its name and began focusing on large-scale solar installation in the Southeast. Kilpatrick said moving into solar installation was a natural transition for STG’s electricians. They already had years of experience building distribution and electrical systems. The biggest difference from electrical subcontracting was working outside. “We found it easier, but the selling point to my team, too, was they really

enjoyed it, I enjoyed it — we all enjoyed being a part of this clean energy movement,” Kilpatrick said. STG Solar currently employs over 200 people, several of whom share the last name Kilpatrick. Despite its size, Mike Kilpatrick and his son Logan, junior project manager at STG, still consider the company a family business. “We used to say, ‘I don’t know whether it’s better to be a son or one of his guys,’” Logan Kilpatrick said. “When it’s a family company, it’s something that we all believe in. It is our family, so for me it’s beautiful. It’s what we rely on. It’s what we built our lives on. It’s the legacy of our father.” Many of the electricians who started with the company prior to the shift to solar are still there today. STG prioritizes keeping all solar-related services, like installing fiber-optic networks or driving structural beams, in-house. Given the volatility of the solar supply chain, STG is leveraging its varied service offerings to give clients realistic and consistent construction timelines. The Kilpatricks attribute all of these factors — employee retention, in-house construction services and a history of large-scale electrical work — to STG’s longevity and its ability to compete at the utility-scale in a region home to other larger solar developers. “It’s fun for me to go up against some really big, seasoned companies and be able to actually have bragging rights that we built over 700 MW, and I’ve got the same clients I’ve had back then, and the same employees I’ve had back then,” Mike Kilpatrick said. “We’re from Podunk, nowhere-land USA, but by golly, we’re a bad, mean, solar machine.” SPW

Solar sales company learns how to make a difference during the pandemic BY KE L LY PIC KE RE L
The decision to start a company at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 would be regarded as questionable in any industry. Quarantines and shutdowns forced many households to reconsider what purchases and services were essential to survival. But that may have been an unintended positive for the solar industry. “Despite what happened, it was the best year business-wise that we possibly could have had,” said Jarret Sherrard, owner of Solar Pro Roofing (No. 348), who officially put an LLC
www.solarpowerworldonline.com
behind his solar sales efforts in 2020. Sherrard has been working in the solar industry for almost a decade, first gaining experience with national brands before branching off in 2018 to do solar sales as a solo act. “I started working with solar installers directly. I did not have exclusivity to one installer because when I met with a customer, I realized that not every company is the best fit for everybody. It really depends on what someone wants, what’s available, their best interests,” he said. “When I met with someone, rather than forcing
down their throat one option that I was tasked with convincing them is the best because it’s all I have to offer, I wanted to give them the best solution for them.” When COVID-19 hit in 2020, Sherrard was overloaded with sales requests from New Yorkers now concerned with energy independence and increased electricity usage at home. He decided it was time to make his sales efforts into a “real business.” Solar Pro Roofing was officially born. The “roofing” portion of the company name comes from Sherrard

finding many solar customers also in dire need of a new roof. Instead of customers getting solar and paying separately for a new roof, Solar Pro Roofing began marketing a new roof with a solar system as one project eligible for one monthly payment. “That became our mission — instead of being a solar company that offers roofing, we wanted to become a roof company that offers solar,” Sherrard said. The roofing focus opened the company to customers looking for assistance with solar reinstallation services when they had to replace an aging roof underneath an existing solar array. “It really created a wonderful niche that gave us much more business than just targeting people that want to save on their electric bill,” Sherrard said. Right now, Solar Pro Roofing acts solely as a sales company with seven fulltime employees. Sherrard said eventually he’d like to have installation services in-house, but the focus today is getting customers in touch with high-quality contractors in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. “I really want us to be a full roofing company that can do solar. Hopefully it never comes, but when solar becomes so regular that the opportunities decrease, we still want to be able to help people modify their houses,” he said. Working in the hard-hit COVID hotspot of New York City gave Sherrard a greater desire to look out for community members and ensure they were making the best decisions when it came to their energy bills. One solar + roof installation Solar Pro Roofing set up in 2020 was for an essential hospital worker, and the company gave all the commission on the sale to the customer. Sherrard said everyone was going through a hard time, so it was nice to reward someone for working in an environment that many people would find impossible at that time. Solar Pro Roofing wants solar and roofing to only be viewed as a positive experience. “Our little motto is ‘solar should never be shady,’” he said. “There are a lot of great companies out there. There’s also a lot of inexperienced people that push solar without divulging into the truth. We will have the hard conversations with people even if it loses [us] an opportunity. We want to make sure we’re doing it the right way and precisely as it should be to eliminate any future problems rather than monetize the situation and have a customer unhappy or going through headaches we could have avoided.” SPW

Tennessee contractor pivots to residential storage after incentives expire BY KE LSEY MISBRENE R
It's a time of great transition in the solar industry. Many contractors that have long benefitted from net-metering incentives or rebates are seeing their states rework those programs or get rid of them altogether. One Top Solar Contractor had to overhaul its residential business model to accommodate the changing rules in Tennessee. In 2018, LightWave Solar (No. 177) realized the state's feed-in tariff, which gave solar installations a reasonable payback period despite Tennessee's generally low energy costs, would be erased by the end of 2019. The team knew it needed to change its residential business or risk losing it. “There's no return on investment anymore,” said Chris Koczaja, CEO of Lightwave Solar. "We saw the end, and so we started figuring out, 'How are we going to do the next

thing?' Without net metering, without a program, what is that going to look like?" The answer to those questions was a pivot to energy storage. Instead of using the ROI of solar installations as the main selling point for residential projects, LightWave learned how to sell and design systems based on the need for resiliency. It wasn't a hard pitch for customers to grasp as worsening climate and other disasters wreaked havoc on their area. "In the last four years, we had a tornado go through downtown Nashville, we had derecho wind, straightline winds come through like two months later, we've had a flood, we've had a bombing in downtown [Nashville] and we've had an ice storm," Koczaja said. "Our customers see the value of resiliency." Once the company found out the solar incentive would end, LightWave got right to work finding prospective storage adopters in its existing customer base and figuring out how to sell, design and install these new systems. The company has always focused on custom projects, which meant install timelines went from one day for solar alone to up to a week for solar with storage. "These now are crazy complicated microgrid systems," Koczaja said. "There's just a lot more equipment to install now and find places for and interconnect." Despite the changing workloads, these new systems are double the price of solar alone, so the company is able to stay profitable. LightWave now estimates that 99% of its installed systems are paired with storage. But higher prices and a 20+ year payback period mean solar power is even

more cost-prohibitive to those with less income. "Have our clients changed in the last two years? Yes. It's somewhat regressive. Our clients are wealthier just because the systems are expensive," Koczaja said. Still, he doesn't expect it to be this way for long. Through his work as president of the Tennessee Solar Energy Industries Association, Koczaja is pushing for storage systems to be properly valued by utilities and incentivized for the benefits they bring to the grid. “I've got these great tools all installed now. How do we use them to help with grid congestion, voltage support, all the other things that are out there?” he said. Even without utility rebates, energy prices will likely increase and make solar + storage systems more economical over time. And the proliferation of electric vehicles could drastically change residential electric needs in the coming years, with many Americans trading a gasoline bill for a higher electricity bill from at-home charging. All these factors will help solar + storage become a sound economic decision rather than one based solely on resilience.
“Instead of solar just being supply… now we're moving into solar + storage demand management. With the tools you have available, you can start to manage your demands,” Koczaja said. He expects homeowners to take an increased interest in their own home energy usage thanks to the growing number of tools available to monitor and control it. Whether it’s a miles-per-gallon gauge on a vehicle or a solar + storage monitoring app, saving energy and money will become easier. “This monitoring app is going to be an addiction. We're going to have a club here in a year for ‘Monitoring App Anonymous,’” Koczaja said. Although there is a promising road ahead for solar, storage and demand management, it’s not a simple shift for early adopters. But the pioneering work of companies like LightWave will illuminate the route for others to follow. "We have made the change, but it's going to be easier for others to change because the tools, the products, everything is going to be better when they have to make the change. But it's a really difficult whole mindset change," Koczaja said. SPW

California company applies experience in repairs to new focus on solar installs BY B I L LY LU DT
Solar arrays are marketed as a “set it and forget it” power source that will generate electricity for at least 25 years. Los Angeles-based residential installer Forme Solar Electric (No. 256) understands that there are plenty of instances where solar arrays do fail — enough in Southern California alone to start a company focused on residential solar repair. Forme Solar was founded in 2017 and initially only offered solar repair services, later adding installation. Company co-founder and chief sales officer Nick Duong worked in the support and repair department with nowshuttered residential installer Verengo Solar and saw firsthand just how many arrays needed repairs. “It’s literally so that people can realize the benefit that they paid for. At the end of the day, the thing that rubs us the wrong way is knowing someone who splashed out all of this money and is in the hole with their system and it’s not even producing,” Duong said. “They can get no help. There are thousands of solar installers, but try to get one on the phone to go out and repair a system they didn’t build — it’s near impossible.” Forme Solar (pronounced “for me”) was founded to provide third-party repairs to solar system owners who can’t schedule a service call with their original installer. The company often fields repair requests on systems installed by contractors now out of business and larger install companies that put system owners on waitlists for months at a time. “There’s not enough attention on repair,” said Terry Kim, COO at Forme. “No one wants to wait three months to have their car back up and running. There needs to be a better infrastructure for [solar] repair.” Many of the systems Forme Solar repair technicians encounter have failed at an electrical level. Inverters installed a decade ago die and often aren’t under warranty anymore; zip ties break and leave wires drooping and susceptible to electrical shorts. “The solar equipment itself doesn’t really break. The biggest fallacy in solar is everyone cares about panels. My

calculator has a solar chip that still works beautifully. The things that break are the inverters or wiring,” Kim said. Ultimately, that experience in solar repairs prepared Forme Solar for its foray into installation. Fulfilling warranties, replacing components and rewiring systems has led the company to install systems that are less likely to need repairs. “We can make a business out of fixing systems that we didn’t install, but I can tell you, as a business, having to go back to and install the correct thing several times, it literally sucks out any of the profit margin you could have possibly hoped for on a job,” Duong said. Today, about 60% of Forme’s work output is installation and the remaining 40% is repairs. In 2021 alone, the company installed nearly 3.2 MW of solar. “We want to do more on the repair side, but at the same time, because of the stuff we do on repair, we have a very strong referral business,” Duong said. “There’s a tremendous amount of goodwill that comes after you fix one solar energy system right.” And with the constant growth of the U.S. solar market, demand for repairs will undoubtedly increase, too. “It’s an area where there’s a huge amount of demand, and in all honesty, a huge amount of responsibility,” Kim said. “It’s the worst thing to leave a customer where they feel powerless, where they can’t get results from the utility company or anything. It’s nice when they can finally find a place where that can be resolved.” SPW

Arizona installer transforms negative personal experience into better solar service BY KE LLY PIC KE RE L
When life handed Val Berechet the biggest lemon, he turned it into a thriving lemonade business. After an awful personal experience trying to go solar in 2014, Berechet was inspired to fill a void and formed a successful solar sales company in Arizona. “Originally I wanted solar on my house, but whatever I get into, I get really into,” said Berechet, president of Sunsolar Solutions (No. 124). His journey with solar started eight years ago when he decided to invest in a 12.4-kW system for his roof. Berechet received quotes from several companies

and got positive referrals for the installer he ultimately chose. But the company’s flaws started showing right away. Permits took too long to be pulled, and then inspections failed several times. During the eight-month process, Berechet reviewed the solar plans, studied NEC requirements, found that the conduit size was incorrect and mounts completely missed trusses, leaving holes visible from the attic. He fired the installation company and tore everything off the roof himself. Over the next two weeks, he reinstalled the solar array with a friend
using the knowledge he gained through the disastrous first go-around. Berechet’s installation passed inspection and is still running strong today. He said the experience conjured two emotions: irritation and motivation. “I was angry that a contractor would disrespect a customer and their home this way, hacking up the roof and leaving holes,” Berechet said. “[I also had this] feeling of motivation that this can be done better. From there, I set out to start a solar company.” Since 2015, Sunsolar Solutions has helped over 8,000 customers go solar

by providing honest quotes, educating communities and only working with respected installers. Sunsolar Solutions was a big partner in Arizona with major residential contractor Titan Solar Power before Sunsolar took installations in-house in 2021. “We were finally able to combine everything we had learned from years of doing sales and customer experience management with the actual installation to guarantee the customer is getting the best experience possible, from how solar is explained and sold, to how the project is managed, to how the installation is done,” Berechet said. “Our company has long been a proponent of selling solar with truth and transparency. We believe you can have massive growth and success while doing it with integrity.”
The company has grown in a short time to over 100 employees, and Berechet said that with Sunsolar’s honest approach to solar, there’s no limit to the growth that’s possible. “We preach about doing something the right way, even if the customer doesn’t know about it. The customer might not even appreciate the work that you’re doing, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it,” he said. “There are some companies out there that are ‘ABC Solar’ for a couple years and then they’re ‘XYZ Solar,’ always changing their names because they’re running away from their problems. We’ve been around seven years and we want to be around for another 25. And the only way you can do that is by doing things the right way.” SPW

New York contractor corners market on solar schools BY KE LS EY M IS B RE N E R
The commercial-scale solar market can be competitive, but finding a niche sets companies on a fast path to success. One Top Solar Contractor spent years honing the skills to specialize in the growing sector of school solar systems. Sunrise Power Solutions (No. 93) had experience working with schools as an electrical contractor, so when the company added solar services to its toolbelt about 12 years ago, it already had an advantage. At that time, many school districts were obtaining grants to procure small, 10-kW systems that served as science experiments for students. Sunrise didn't balk at these minuscule projects, instead seeing them as opportunities.
www.solarpowerworldonline.com
"After doing a few of those, then it got bigger and bigger each year to the point where we are right now," said Stephen Foley, director of business development at Sunrise. Now, the company calls itself the largest installer of school solar in New York. However, these solar projects are much different from other commercial-scale projects, starting with the sales process. "It's a lot more complicated than for any other solar installation. When you're dealing with the school district, there are many, many stakeholders," Foley said. Instead of working with a few business leaders like in other C&I-scale projects, school solar installations require

buy-in from numerous officials — as well as the general public if the project requires taxpayer funding. Permitting can also be more complex, since companies must get permission from the New York State Education Department to do any work on a school building. "It's not something that just anybody can jump into and do because of that," Foley said. "It literally takes years to do, from the time you start initially developing a project to going through the whole approval process." When Sunrise is working with a new school, Foley first speaks with the superintendent of the district and other assistant administrators. His master's degree in educational leadership and certification as a school business official makes this part easier. "The other administrators, we speak the same language," he said. energy service company (ESCO) and a facility owner. ESCOs will audit the energy of the entire school and then procure efficiency measures like LED lighting and solar installations under a single contract. These contracts are often financed through existing school maintenance budgets or bonds, and they always include performance guarantees. If a solar project underperforms, that ESCO will pay the difference out of pocket. Foley said most schools these days are procuring solar installations through ESPCs. Other schools may have access to municipal grants or rebates. "We use all those factors to help make it more affordable for schools to put the solar on. Another common roadblock for school solar involves the project logistics. School roofs are often old and may not be deemed structurally capable of holding ballast blocks and solar panels. Sunrise has learned to be creative in those situations, offering custom carport designs instead. "We can take a look at parking lots or even field areas where we can put in a ground-mount or a canopy system over walkways," he said. Although the extra work required in all stages of school solar installations can be overwhelming, dedication to this growing sector has paid off for Sunrise Power Solutions. SPW

Appalachian solar installer combats opioid addiction with employment BY B I LLY LU DT
The opioid epidemic has devastated the United States, and no region has felt the impact of widespread addiction more than Appalachia. After witnessing how irresponsible pharmaceutical practices affected its community, Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, contractor Mountain View Solar (mtvSolar) (No. 252) is doing its part to fight back by partnering with a local addiction treatment center. mtvSolar started as a building

contractor in 1995, constructing homes that were considered “green” before the term was popularized. The company built homes with tight envelopes, highperformance insulation, radiant floor heating and low-to-no volatile organic building compounds. “We came from that level of building, and we were conserving energy. We were doing a lot of geothermal work, air and hydronic. Making energy was the
next logical step for us, and that’s what happened,” said Michael McKechnie, founder and CEO of mtvSolar. The company began installing small wind and solar hot water systems before switching to PV in 2007. mtvSolar built its last house in 2011 and has been installing strictly PV and battery storage ever since. Over the last 25 years, the solar installer has been building a presence in the community.

In 2021, Dr. Jonathan Hartiens, CEO of the Mountaineer Recovery Center (MRC) outside Martinsburg, West Virginia, commissioned mtvSolar to install an array at the addiction treatment center. As the construction date approached, Hartiens suggested that some people enrolled in the recovery program get involved with the installation itself. “We thought it was a great idea and took it a step further from not just being a piece of the installation, but also an employment opportunity for those that were taking part in the install,” said Mike Studholme, senior commercial and residential PV consultant at mtvSolar. Hartiens said employment is one way to give people a sense of structure as they exit the recovery program, since it’s easier for people to fall back into addiction during idle times. So, mtvSolar selected two people in the outpatient portion of addiction treatment at MRC to assist with construction. The contractor trained and paid the two workers, and even helped arrange housing for them, since people often exit drug rehabilitation without a vehicle, cellphone or place to stay. The two trainees helped construct a nearly 200-kW solar array atop MRC. Throughout their solar employment, candidates were drug-tested and met with their addiction counselors weekly to ensure they were satisfying their rehabilitation requirements. After the install, mtvSolar hired one of the trainees, who is still working at the company. “Addiction is such a complex issue. It deserves a multifaceted approach to recovery,” said Kelly Waugh, VP and controller at mtvSolar. “This is the latest way that we’ve seen we
can have an impact. We can build relationships and we can give these folks a second chance in the process.” Since its involvement with MRC, mtvSolar has expanded its rehabilitation support further. The contractor has now converted space above its headquarters into several apartments for other trainees in recovery. It’s already fully occupied with people in the employment program. Although this partnership is new, mtvSolar has always taken a different approach to hiring and retention. Company policy states that if a current employee falls into addiction, they can seek treatment and return to their job upon rehabilitation. “We don’t discriminate in our company in any aspect,” said Ryan Slack, master electrician with mtvSolar. “If I see someone that’s on our crew that needs help, I’ll send them to go get help, and they’ll have a job when they come back. A lot of places don’t offer that. If you come up positive on a drug screening, a company will just fire you and want nothing to do with you from here on out. I don’t believe in that.” mtvSolar’s CEO recognizes that many people working in the trades are in recovery from addiction. Being open to workers who have difficult pasts can benefit both the individuals and the company. “Bringing them in has been good for us, and it’s helping the company as well,” McKechnie said. “This is purely not an altruistic thing. We’re doing this to serve a need that we have. A guy that was in the trades that’s become clean, that skillset’s not gone. They still have it; they just need to figure out how to manage their life better.” SPW

Addressing climate change extends beyond the mission of curbing carbon output and slowing global temperature increases. Changes to the environment are often man-made, and the introduction of invasive species to new settings can be devastating for ecosystems. That’s why Riverdale, Michigan-based installer Michigan Solar Solutions (No. 266) has taken responsibility for restoring the land where it sited its headquarters. In 2016, Michigan Solar Solutions (MSS) purchased a former golf drivingrange that had been abandoned for 10 years. The 35-acre property had in that time become a breeding ground for autumn-olive trees, a plant species invasive to Michigan. MSS has removed the autumn-olives from 30 acres and replaced them with native grasses and flowers with the goal of making the land a wildlife refuge. Additionally, MSS installed 20 bat and birdhouses, some built specifically for owls, bluebirds and ducks. The company is seeking a local beekeeper to bring some hives to the site as well. Besides its naturalistic efforts, MSS’s headquarters is net-zero and produces more power with solar than it consumes. Instead of building a new office when purchasing the property, MSS rehabilitated an existing building. All lights were replaced with LEDs, a

solar-powered attic fan was added, solar tube skylights were put in the roof to add more natural light and a 28-panel PV array was installed on the roof. MSS took environmentalism one step further by converting the building to air-to-air heat exchangers to get off propane. To compensate for that additional electrical load, MSS found an opportunity to test the latest solar panel technology at the time and installed two Panasonic, two LG and two Jinko halfcell panels. As operations expanded, MSS built an off-grid pole building that uses an OutBack Power Technologies energy storage system. It operates as the company’s permitting, service and sales processing department and houses its mid-Michigan warehouse and crews. The company’s latest addition to the property is an electric vehicle charger where community members are encouraged to stop, charge their vehicles and walk the land. Gigawatts of photovoltaic solar are coming online in the United States annually, but the technology is still some years from becoming the standard for domestic energy production. To account for growing pains in solar, contractors are taking extra steps to make the process simpler for customers — contractors like South Carolina’s Palmetto Solar (No. 73), which developed a digital platform that accounts for every step in the solar install process, from sales pitch to permission to operate. Design and sales software are commonly used by solar installers. What differentiates Palmetto’s platform is its proprietary offerings. The company describes itself as “techfirst,” keeping the solar support for customers, sales and enterprise partners and installers completely digital, with efforts outside day-to-day processes to anticipate an expanding solar market. One of Palmetto’s developments beyond basic sales and design is software that maps the solar potential for 84% of the buildings in the United States. Using proprietary energy intelligence data and MIT-licensed algorithms, Palmetto developers are able to model buildings and determine their solar friendliness. Another digital offering from the contractor is GLIDE (Geospatial Local Intelligence Data Engine), which is a database containing applicable information on regions, utilities, jurisdictions, service territories and supply and distribution centers. GLIDE is available to Palmetto’s residential installer network to assist in the sales process. Then, to make navigating GLIDE simpler, Palmetto developed Atlas, which harnesses that data and presents it to users geographically. These programs on the Palmetto platform are offered to consumers and installation, sales and enterprise partners. Through its sales platform, design software and network of financing resources, the company is aiming for transparency in project cost and construction timelines and wants to drive down prices for consumers trying to go solar. Making positive changes to the solar industry is in GoldMarkel’s DNA. In 2008, he founded Solar States as a B Corp with the dual purposes of installing solar power and educating the next generation about the technology. After attending a speech by Green for All advocate Van Jones, he took that mission one step further and aspired to bring underserved communities into the green economy. True to this plan, Gold-Markel led Solar States to partner with the Philadelphia Energy Authority and other organizations to create the “Find Your Power” curriculum, a free 38-class program for anyone interested in becoming a solar installer. Since the launch, Gold-Markel’s team has trained hundreds of high school students and adults on how to install solar. A number of Find Your Power graduates are now employed by Solar States, some holding positions as master electricians or solar designers.
