About Willamette University Bearcat Hoop 2006-07 Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. Why Willamette? • Quality Academics • Student-Athletes are more than 1/4 of the student body • Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference • Student-Faculty Ratio of 11:1 • Students from 34 States • Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol • Near the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” Page

The Mill Race, which runs through campus, is a great place for students to relax.

This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. The faculty

Salem, the state capital, is the secondlargest city in Oregon, with a population of about 147,000. The Pacific Coast is just about an hour away and the Pacific Coast mountain range is even closer. To the east are the Cascade Mountains, lakes, streams and rivers. Also within driving distance are Portland, the Columbia River gorge and Mount Hood. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol and from being near other federal, state, county, and city offices. Willamette Head Coach Bearcat Hoop 2006-07

Gordie James

Head Coach (20th year), 324-189 (.632) Alma Mater: Cal Poly Pomona (1964) As he enters his 20th season leading the Bearcats, Head Coach Gordie James adds to his legacy as one of the top coaches in Willamette University history. James has earned a school record 324 wins, including the 1993 NAIA National Championship. He was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1993. Later, he guided the Bearcats through the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division III. His team won the NWC Tournament title in 2000 and reached the semifinals in 2002, before a return trip to the championship game in 2003. He has been named NWC Coach of the Year four times. Four of the past five editions of Bearcat Hoop have finished in the top two in the NWC. His teams have been characterized by a workmanlike style, dedicated to defense and fundamental play. “What Coach James and this program are about can be seen in how successful past players have been in their lives,” said team captain Josh Erickson. “Coach gets us ready not just for the next opponent, but for the next step in our lives as well.” Perhaps even more impressive than his on-court resume are the achievements of James’ players off the floor. The past 18 years of Bearcat Hoop have maintained a 3.2 GPA and produced ten scholar-athletes. Former team captains Brad Nelson ’99, Kip Ioane ’01 and Ryan Hepp ’03 were among national finalists for the Josten’s Page

Trophy, a prestigious award given annually to a Division III player who combines his on-the-floor success with off-the-court achievements. Also, Shawn Gahr, a team captain in 2000, was a Wall Street Journal Student of the Year during his final season. James’ career spans beyond Willamette. As a high school coach for 22 years, he compiled a 340-129 (.598) overall record. In 1994, he was named head coach of the Japanese National Team and led the squad to a bronze medal in the Asian Olympics, for Japan’s first basketball medal in 21 years. He is director of the Pro Classic Hoop Camp. With over 15,000 campers to its credit, Pro Classic is a key part of Oregon Youth Activities. It all began when James started the camp with NBA Hall of Fame Coach Jack Ramsay. James and his wife, Peggy, live in Keizer. They have three grown children: Ken, Don and Cheri, as well as six grandchildren.

Head Coach Gordie James is beginning his 20th season as the leader of the Bearcats.

Willamette Assistant Coaches Bearcat Hoop 2006-07

Wally Wing Assistant Coach (20th year) Assistant Coach Wally Wing returns for his 20th season with Bearcat Hoop. A vital component of the team’s make-up, Wing has made contributions to the program that have resulted in success during nearly two decades of service. He helped coach WU to the NAIA National Championship in 1993. “Wally’s presence within the program is greatly respected, said junior wing Michael Smith. “Coach Wing’s personable manner and sense of humor make him an integral part of what makes us successful..” Wing and his wife, Margot, live nearby in Keizer with their son, Austin, and their daughter, Avery. Wing also is employed as the Physical Education Teacher at Gubser Elementary School in Keizer.

Nelson Lomax Assistant Coach (8th year) Former Bearcat player Nelson Lomax returns for his eighth season on the Bearcat coaching staff. A player on the Willamette 1994 National Quarterfinal team, Lomax’s ability to relate to players and serve as an outlet for them has contributed greatly to the Bearcat program.

Bearcats

“Nelson’s success in the business world, after his playing days, is a great example of what Bearcat Hoop is all about,” said senior wing Robbie Andrus. “His taking the time to work with us and share his experiences is a testament to his own personal character.” Lomax and his wife, Carrie, live in South Salem with sons Jalen and Mason. Lomax also is employed by Professional Mortgage Company in Salem.

Kip Ioane Assistant Coach (6th year) Former player Kip Ioane enters his sixth season on the coaching staff. A two-year captain and four-year letterwinner for the Bearcats, Ioane’s knowledge of the game (and the Bearcats’ system) enables him to teach the game to WU’s young players. “Kip combines his playing experience with his coaching knowledge of the game, giving us another source of guidance within all aspects of the program,” said junior post Ian Mansfield. A graduate of Willamette’s Master of Arts in Teaching program, Ioane teaches business at McKay High School in Salem. Kip and his wife, Kelly (Sorenson) ’01, are expecting their first child in May. Kelly was a volleyball and basketball star at Willamette. Willamette’s assistant coaches have been with the Bearcats for a combined 34 years. Page

The NCAA and the Northwest Conference Bearcat Hoop 2006-07

NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, employees care about the well-being of their student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine prviate colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plus Whitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 included Willamette, College of Idaho (Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (UPS). Albany College was added in 1931 and remained for seven

Bearcats

years, then departed and returned in 1949 as Lewis and Clark College. The next member, Pacific Lutheran, joined in 1965, followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in 1988. Menlo College joined the NWC in 2006 in football only. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes. Page 15

Willamette Season Outlook Bearcat Hoop 2006-07 After Willamette lost three starters and three key reserves from last season’s squad that qualified for the Northwest Conference Tournament, the 2006-07 edition of Bearcat Hoop will be counting on new faces to keep up the team’s winning tradition. Head Coach Gordie James will look for returning players to take the lead as he enters his 20th year at Willamette University. The biggest shoes to fill are those of John Olinger, who was commonly referred to as “Johnny O” by teammates and fans. Olinger, who earned First Team All-NWC honors last year after averaging 18.0 points per game, played wing for the Bearcats and was the heart and soul of last year’s team. Willamette has won 17 or more games during four of the past five seasons. The Bearcats were 17-8 in 2005-06.

Despite the loss of Olinger, the Bearcats return fellow First Team All-NWC selection C.J. Stuvland (Sr.) at point guard. Olinger and Stuvland were the first pair of Bearcat teammates to be selected First Team AllNWC during the same season since Ryan Hepp and Marques Johnson were chosen for the First Team in 2002-03. Stuvland, who averaged 14.9 points per game a year ago, and junior point guard Josh Erickson, will be at the helm of the Bearcats’ motion-oriented offense. Senior wing Rob Andrus also is expected to start or see significant time off the bench as a backcourt player. According to James, Andrus is a player who can step into the game and score at anytime. Even though Erickson and Stuvland are both listed as point guards, they will be on Page 20

the floor at the same time for much of the season. Both can score and run the offense. “Josh is the ultimate floor leader,” James said. “He has great floor vision and can get the ball to the right guy at the right time. He just has an excellent feel for the game. “C.J. can really push the ball in the open court. He has the ability to knock it down from the perimeter and he can score at the hoop,” James noted. Among the key backups at the point guard and wing positions are senior Mike Plank (Pt. Guard/Wing) and junior Michael Smith (Wing). Other WU backcourt players are sophomores Corey Costantino (Wing), Simon Currie (Wing/Post) and Nick Babij (Wing), along with freshmen Grant Leslie (Pt. Guard) and Dan Nugent (Wing/Post). Plank will be the primary backup at point guard, as he rejoins the team after sitting out last season. Plank’s time with the team will end at the start of the second semester, since he will graduate from WU in December. According to James, Smith is the team’s most improved player on both ends of the floor. With his abilities to knock down the

Willamette

Willamette Season Outlook Bearcat Hoop 2006-07 3-pointer and defend, Smith will be a major contributor this season. Costantino and Currie can expect to see their minutes increase in their second season with the program. Costantino is a versatile player who can play all three perimeter positions, while Currie is one of the team’s top 3-point shooters. Nugent is only newcomer to be added to the Bearcats’ roster this year. He is a multi-dimensional scorer who has an array of moves to the basket and an excellent ability to finish. Junior Ian Mansfield and sophomore Kyler McClary will most likely be WU’s starters at the post positions. Mansfield started 20 games a year ago and averaged 5.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He also led the team in blocked shots with 22. “With his strength and explosiveness, he is a premier defensive rebounder,” James said about Mansfield. “He has worked hard to expand his offensive arsenal.”

During 2005-06, C.J. Stuvland averaged 14.9 points and was named First Team All-NWC.

Bearcats

McClary played in just 11 games during the 2005-06 season, but has worked hard to earn a starting position. He combines well with Mansfield for exceptional post play. “He is an excellent frontline defender who can guard the block as well as step out and guard the perimeter,” James said regarding McClary. “Kyler can score in the paint and has accuracy from 3-point range.” Sophomore Tain Cantrell (Post) will be the primary backup in the frontcourt. His long arms and skillful timing make him an excellent offensive rebounder as well as a strong defender in the lane. Currie and Nugent also may help at post this season. James’ past teams have been known for their tough defensive style of play, and he says this year’s team will need that same attitude to be successful in the extremely competitive Northwest Conference. “We lost key defenders to graduation,” James said. “So this year’s team will need to develop their individual containment skills and combine them with an aggressive help concept in order to control the highpowered offenses of the NWC. “Our players also need to become more persistent and relentless on the defensive boards,” James added. “This year’s players possess excellent floor speed, so their defensive efforts need to create some stops, which will allow us to get into the open court game.” Despite the loss of Olinger and other key players, the Bearcats enter the year full of optimism with the return of Erickson, Stuvland, and Mansfield, plus quality depth at all five positions. In James’ twentieth season at Willamette, the key to another successful year could be how quickly the players grow into their new roles.
