Willamette offers a high-level education along with athletic success

Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to 1842. Students and employees at Willamette are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful, tree-lined campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students

do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. The faculty and staff bring a wide range of views and experiences to the the campus. Willamette’s student-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows faculty to maintain ample office hours and to serve as advisors. They are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. Willamette is selective and seeks serious and talented students. The average first-year student has a 3.74 GPA, an SAT score of

1261 and an ACT score of 27. Enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,856, with a total enrollment of 2,500. About 83 percent of Willamette students receive financial aid and scholarships. Many students choose to attend graduate or professional school. Willamette has a reputation for financial stability. Its endowment consistently earns a spot among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis.

Salem, the state capital, is the secondlargest city in Oregon, with a population of about 147,000. Salem features a range of restaurants, theaters and other cultural opportunities ... many within easy walking distance. The Willamette River winds its way through Salem’s historic downtown district as it flows northward through wine country and agricultural land. The Pacific Coast is just an hour away and the Pacific Coast mountain range is even closer. To the east are the Cascade Mountains, lakes, streams and rivers. Also within driving distance are Portland, the Columbia River gorge and Mount Hood. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol and from being near other federal, state, county, and city offices. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations. Students also participate in the Community Outreach Program through a variety of volunteer service projects.

The entire complex, which also includes Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium for baseball, is adjacent to Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and also is known for its art exhibits, rose garden, trees and expanses of open land. McCulloch Stadium is located just two blocks from the Willamette campus and only one block from Salem Hospital. With its proximity to the hospital, Ogdahl Field at McCulloch Stadium is occasionally used as a landing site for emergency helicopters.

McCulloch Stadium provides the home field for the Willamette University Bearcats. Ogdahl Field at McCulloch Stadium is an artificial turf facility that is one of the top NCAA Division III facilities in the Pacific Northwest. It combines the closeness and atmosphere of an old-time stadium with such modern elements as FieldTurf for the playing surface, spacious locker rooms and a variety of meeting rooms. The stadium seats approximately 2,400 fans. All seating is covered, providing fans with comfortable setting even in inclement weather. The press box, located above the seating area, was designed with plenty of room for coaches, media representatives and the statistical crew. It also includes a booth for the public address announcer and official timer, as well as a booth for the Willamette’s president to host a variety of supporters and dignitaries. With lights surrounding the field, the Bearcats have been able to add another element to Willamette football with night games since 2004. The Bearcats also play afternoon games to take advantage of the sunny skies during most of the season. Another advantage is that the stadium includes an athletic training room, allowing Willamette athletes to receive treatments on-site. Football players have convenient access to athletic trainers at practices and home games throughout the season. Likewise, Bearcat football coaches have office space at the stadium in addition to offices at the Sparks Center on campus. This is helpful before practice and allows coaches to watch films and hold meetings where they spend most of their time. Last season, Willamette finished with a 3-2 record at home, losing only to NCAA Playoff qualifiers Mary Hardin-Baylor and Linfield. The Bearcats scored 165 points at home for 33.0 points per game. McCulloch Stadium also features the Charles Bowles Track, an all-weather facility that is the home for Willamette’s highlyregarded men’s and women’s track and field teams. The track also provides a great place for the finish of home cross country meets. In 2005, Willamette hosted and won the Northwest Conference and NCAA Regional meets in men’s and women’s cross country.

Season Outlook 2006 Willamette University Football Media Guide 2006

Bearcats • Bearcats

For the Willamette University football team, the 2006 season is an opportunity to achieve the Bearcats’ fifth consecutive winning season. Willamette’s efforts on the gridiron have led to a 25-15 overall record the past four years and the Bearcats have finished above .500 eight times during the past 10 seasons. The team highlighted the decade with a 13-1 record and a trip to the NAIA National Championship game in 1997, in the final year before Willamette went to NCAA Division III. Willamette was 5-4 last season. The Bearcats achieved a 3-1 record and a second place finish in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcats will be led by 16 returning starters, with seven starters back on offense and nine starters remaining on defense. Willamette also returns its place-kicker, punter, long snapper and top punt return specialist. Willamette suffered significant losses on offense, where the top two standouts completed their eligibility last fall. Quarterback Cameron Walton, a Second Team All-NWC selection, completed 71 of 134 passes (53.0%) for a total of 847 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Quentin Brock carried the ball 185 times for 884 yards (4.8 avg.) and led the Bearcats with 10 touchdowns, while earning First Team All-NWC honors. He hauled in eight passes for 89 yards and returned 11 kickoffs for 211 yards (19.2 avg.). The Bearcats also lost two offensive linemen from the 2005 starting lineup. The defense sustained only two losses among the starters, but both were key players. Medgy Khoury led the Willamette linebacking corps with a team-high 83 total tackles on 23 solo stops and 60 assists. He was named First Team All-Northwest Conference. Tim Alton registered 58 total tackles, including 24 solo tackles and 34 assists, as the team’s free safety.

Airborne Delivery Phil Sweet makes a diving tackle from his linebacker position. In 2005, Sweet made 81 tackles to rank 2nd for Willamette in total tackles.

490 yards and three touchdowns last fall. He also averaged 17.2 yards on four kickoff returns. Hernandez and Plank both earned Second Team All-Northwest Conference honors in 2005. Likewise, even with Brock no longer in the lineup, the Bearcats should continue to field a commanding rushing attack. Kevin Dean (Sr.) returns at fullback, where he rushed 21 times for 92 yards (4.4 avg.) and two touchdowns, while providing solid blocking throughout the season. Skylar Swinford (Jr.), who rushed 10 times for 63 yards and returned six kickoffs for 128 yards (21.3 avg.) in four appearances a year ago, will

Offense Without Walton at quarterback, the offense has to reset, with junior Kevin Whipps and sophomore Grant Leslie battling to take over as the offensive signal caller. Whipps played in four games last season, but did not start. He completed 11 of 25 passes (44.0%) for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Leslie is seeking his first action on the field for the Bearcats. Although WU lacks significant experience at quarterback, the Bearcats still have some potent offensive threats returning this season. Ryan Hernandez (Sr., FL) is back after rushing for 356 yards on 65 carries (5.5 avg.) and catching 10 passes for 104 yards. He scored four TDs, including three on the ground. Michael Plank (Sr., WR) led the Bearcats with 36 catches for

battle C.J. Washington (Jr.) for the tailback spot. Washington played in nine games and carried the ball 10 times for 64 yards. At tight end, Willamette returns the services of Tony Davis (Jr.), who hauled in nine passes for 149 yards during 2005. He also contributed important blocks in Willamette’s “fly” offense, which racked up 3,231 total yards (359.0 yards per game) and 2,148 rushing yards (238.7 avg.). Davis was selected Second Team All-NWC. Junior offensive tackle Brandon Bennett will lead three returning starters in the offensive line. Last year, Bennett was chosen First Team All-Northwest Conference, after being named Honorable Mention All-NWC as a freshman. Bennett also was named Honorable Mention All-America and Third Team All-West Region by d3football.com last fall. Other returning offensive linemen are Justin Cole (Jr., OG) and Jake Forshey (So., OT). The Bearcats will be looking for starters at center and one offensive guard position. With a strong recruiting class of offensive linemen joining a solid group of returning letterwinners, Head Coach Mark Speckman anticipates a great year from the line. “Since I’ve been here, this is the best group of linemen we’ve had. It was a very strong recruiting year for linemen,” Speckman said.

Defense

Ryan Hernandez runs in the open field. Last season, he rushed for 365 yards and 3 TDs.

After fielding a young defense in 2005, the Bearcats have gained experience and will benefit from the play of nine returning starters this season. Leading the defensive charge will be three players who earned Second Team AllNWC honors as sophomores last year. They are linebacker Phillip Sweet, strong safety Tyler Gill and defensive tackle Mitch MacCready.

Season Outlook 2006 Willamette University Football Media Guide 2006

I’m really looking forward to getting these guys out on the field. This may be one of the more balanced teams that we’ve had. Last year, we were just so young on both sides of the ball.

At linebacker, Sweet is joined by returner Devin O’Roarke. Last season, O’Roarke ranked third on the team with 76 total tackles. He was credited with 24 unassisted tackles as well as 52 assists. Coach Speckman anticipates an intense battle from several players for the remaining linebacker spot. “Our linebackers ... a lot of guys played last year and are back,” Speckman said. “We’re pretty fired up about our linebackers.” With Gill back at strong safety, plus two returning cornerbacks, the defensive secondary also should be strong. Wesley Randall (Sr., CB) produced 39 tackles (23 solo) a year ago, while breaking up six passes. At the other cornerback position, Josh Barker (Sr.) was involved in 19 tackles, including 16 solo tackles. He intercepted two passes and broke up four pass attempts. The final position in the WU secondary, free safety, will likely be won by Ben Fennimore (Jr.) or Jim Whiteley (Sr.). Fennimore achieved 15 tackles and played in all nine games in 2005. Whiteley also played in every game and achieved four tackles.

Sweet ranked second on the team with 81 total tackles, including 28 solo stops. He also intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and made one fumble recovery. Gill achieved 44 total tackles, evenly split between solo tackles and assists. He intercepted four passes for 47 yards in returns and broke up another six passes, to go with two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. MacCready registered 22 total tackles, with 12 unassisted tackles and 10 assists. He earned five tackles for losses and recorded one sack. MacCready will lead a defensive line with all four starters returning. Other starters in the defensive line are Chris Mulitalo (Jr., DT), Mike Reeves (So., DE) and Joshua Lee (So., DE). Mulitalo accumulated 29 tackles in 2005, with 2.5 tackles for losses and two pass break-ups. Reeves achieved 41 tackles, with 19 unassisted tackles and 22 assisted tackles. Mulitalo recorded four tackles for losses and one quarterback sack. Lee earned seven tackles in six games, including 1.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

Special Teams Place-kicker Matt Bicocca (Jr.) and punter Clinton Moran (Jr.) each enters his third season as a Willamette starter on special teams. Bicocca ranked second on the team in scoring last year (43 points), while converting 6 of 8 field goals and 25 of 26 extra points. Moran averaged 37.1 yards on 50 punts, including 10 punts inside the 20-yard line. Bicocca and Moran will benefit from the deep snapping of Stephen Shamus (Jr.), who also returns. Plank will be the team’s top punt returner. He gained 24 yards on 8 punt returns in 2005. Several players are being considered to take the lead role on kickoff returns.

Schedule Willamette’s schedule features six games against opponents in the challenging Northwest Conference, plus three strong non-conference games against NCAA Division II rival Western Oregon University and NCAA Division III West Region foes Gustavus Adolphus University and California Lutheran University. As usual, the match-ups with NWC foe Linfield College and Western Oregon are of particular interest to Willamette’s hometown fans in Salem, Oregon. “The local rivalries are intact,” Speckman said. “Those are fun to play. Anytime we play them, it’s going to be a big game.” Overall, the Bearcats will play just four of nine regular season games at home. Road games include four of the six NWC contests.

“The big key for us is playing well on the road,” Speckman noted. “For us to achieve our goals, we’re going to have to be a good road team. It’s just imperative.” Even with the extra challenges Willamette will face on the road, the Bearcats are looking forward to the 2006 season. The Bearcats have won seven or more games four times during Speckman’s eight years. Willamette has claimed a total of 21 Northwest Conference titles, with its most recent titles in 1996, 1997 and 1999. “I’m really looking forward to getting these guys out on the field,” Speckman said. “This may be one of the more balanced teams that we’ve had. Last year, we were just so young on both sides of the ball. “We think we’re going to field a pretty good squad ... where both sides of the line will contribute equally,” Speckman continued. “And we’re excited about our special teams. Willamette University Football Media Guide 2006

Head Coach Mark Speckman (9th year) • Record of 46-34 (.575) as Head Coach at Willamette • Northwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1999 • Record of 74-39-1 (.668) on Willamette Football Staff • National Playoffs in 1996, 1997 (Title Game) and 1999 • NWC Championships in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1999

Head Coach Mark Speckman is in his ninth year as the leader of the Willamette University football team. Speckman has led the Bearcats to a combined record of 46-34 (.575) over the past eight seasons. He guided the 1999 team to a 7-4 overall record and a berth in the NCAA Division III Playoffs. His efforts earned him the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year Award in 1999. Including three years coaching at Willamette as the Bearcats’ offensive coordinator, he has been involved in nine winning seasons with the Cardinal and Gold. He has helped Willamette achieve seven or more wins six times and has contributed to the Bearcats’ overall record of 76-39-1 (.668) since 1995. Speckman is regarded in the coaching ranks as one of the foremost authorities regarding “The Fly” offense. “The Fly” brings the flanker in motion through the formation before nearly every snap. The flanker will take a handoff, block for a running play or become a receiver. It is an offense built on deception and quality blocking, where the ball may go in a number of different directions on any given snap. As a result, the Bearcats have provided their fans with an exciting, fast-paced offense. The

team has established many offensive records under Speckman’s guidance. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff, Speckman was a head coach at the high school level for 14 seasons in California. His high school teams earned a combined record of 113-48-3 (.698). Speckman coached Merced High School’s football team to national prominence during his eight-year tenure (1986-93). Season Review 2005 Willamette University Football Media Guide 2006

Bearcats • Bearcats

At the beginning of the 2005 season, the Willamette University football team had many question marks. The Bearcats, who were coming off a 7-4 season in which they lost in the first round of the 2004 NCAA Division III national playoffs, were in search of a new identity for a team with many freshmen and sophomores. After losing their first three games of the season, the young Bearcats found their way, as players stepped up to lead the team to a second place finish in the Northwest Conference and to within a game of a second straight national playoff appearance. Willamette rattled off five straight victories after those three losses, and for the third straight year they met Linfield in the final week of the regular season with the NWC title on the line. Despite losing to the defending Division III national champion Wildcats, the Bearcats were still one of 12 teams that the NCAA selection committee looked at for the final seven at-large bids into the national playoffs. As for the questions the team faced entering the season, all of them were answered with very positive results. On the WU offensive line, Brandon Bennett was the only returning starter, but Justin Cole, Pat Fejaran, Jake Forshey, and junior college transfer Vince Juarez each claimed starting roles. Those players paved the way for WU to finish 18th in the country with an average of 238.7 rushing yards per game. Bennett was selected First Team All-NWC and was a D3Football.com Honorable Mention All-American. Although the offensive line had at least one returning starter, the same could not be said for the defensive line, which lost all four starters from 2004, including All-American defensive end Nate Matlock. By midseason, though, several players like Mitchell MacCready, Mike Reeves and Chris Mulitalo had become regular starters. MacCready was named Second Team All-NWC.

In the passing game, Mike Plank emerged as the team’s best receiver, and was named Second Team All-NWC. Plank caught 36 passes for 390 yards, including nine catches for 168 yards in WU’s win over Southern Oregon. Junior flanker Ryan Hernandez and sophomore tight end Tony Davis were chosen Second Team All-NWC. Senior quarterback Cameron Walton and senior running back Quentin Brock were the unquestioned leaders of the offense. Brock finished second in the NWC in rushing with 884 yards and ranked first in the conference with 10 rushing touchdowns. Walton finished fourth in the NWC in total offense with 1,303 yards, as he earned 456 rushing yards and four touchdowns to go with 847 passing yards and four additional scores. Brock was chosen First Team All-NWC and Walton was a Second Team All-NWC selection. The top player on the defensive side of the ball was senior linebacker Megdy Khoury. He ranked second in the conference with 9.2 tackles per game, on his way to First Team All-NWC status. Khoury and fellow linebackers Phil Sweet and Devin O’Rourke played well all season, with Sweet finishing third in the conference in tackles (9.2 avg.) and O’Rourke placing fourth in the NWC in tackles (8.4 avg.). Tyler Gill, a junior rover, had an outstanding season, as he recorded. 44 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered one fumble. Sweet and Gill were selected as Second Team All-NWC honorees. Willamette’s strong schedule contributed to the team’s 0-3 start. In the season opener, WU played up a division in a loss to Western Oregon of NCAA Division II. In the second week, the Bearcats faced Mary Hardin-Baylor, ranked #2 in NCAA Division III. In week three, WU went to Azusa Pacific, ranked #20 in the NAIA. The team refused to give up despite those losses. Willamettte went on to win five straight, including the last four in overtime or in the final minute of regulation.

Big Plays in the Big Win! Senior running back Quentin Brock rushed 25 times for 144 yards and two touchdowns in Willamette’s 40-34 (OT) win at Whitworth. He scored on a

Special Teams - Wesley Randall (CB) Randall blocked two punts, including one that resulted in a touchdown by C.J. Washington for the first score of the game.

Oct. 29 vs. Pacific Lutheran

Defensive - Devin O’Rourke (LB) O’Rourke earned 19 tackles, with two tackles for losses. One of the tackles resulted in a safety for the Bearcats. He also achieved a tackle on fourth down that ended PLU’s final drive.

Nov. 5 at Whitworth

Defensive - Tyler Gill (DB) Gill intercepted a pass on Whitworth’s overtime possession. He also forced a fumble that led to a touchdown during the second half.

The College of Idaho left in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in 1988. Menlo College joins the NWC in football only starting in 2006. The Northwest Conference, which for many years sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent

Colleges in 1984 to become the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted national affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Although the NWC had a history of success in the NAIA, member institutions knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and genuine concern for student-athletes in all sports.

The Northwest Conference is building a reputation as one of the most competitive NCAA Division III alliances in the country. The nine private colleges and universities situated throughout Oregon and Washington are nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC has changed membership and national affiliation during its 80-year history. It is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 included Willamette, the College of Idaho (which is now Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (now UPS). Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes in Division III, which has over 425 member institutions and is the largest of the three NCAA divisions. College and universities competing in Division III place the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities as the member of an intercollegiate athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Division III institutions must sponsor at least five sports for men and five sports for women. Athletes in NCAA Division III do not receive financial aid related to their athletic ability.
