About Willamette University Willamette Men’s Basketball 2007-08 Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to its founding in 1842. Students and employees are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. Why Willamette? • Quality Academics • Student-Athletes are more than 1/4 of the student body • Competition in the NCAA and the Northwest Conference • Student-Faculty Ratio of 11:1 • Students from 42 States • Opportunity to Study Abroad • Located across the street from the Oregon State Capitol • Near the Pacific Coast and the Cascade Mountains We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.”

The Mill Race, which runs through campus, is a great place for students to relax.

This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. Gordie James

Head Coach (21st year), 334-204 (.621) NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1992-93 Alma Mater: Cal Poly Pomona (1964)

As he enters his 21st season leading the Bearcats, Head Coach Gordie James adds to his legacy as one of the top coaches in Willamette University history. James has earned a school record 334 wins, including the 1992-93 NAIA National Championship. He was named NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1992-93. Later, he led the Bearcats through the transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division III. His teams won the NWC Tournament title in 2000 and reached the semifinals in 2002, before a return trip to the championship game in 2003. He has been named NWC Coach of the Year four times. Four of the past six editions of Bearcat Hoop have finished in the top two in the NWC. His teams have been characterized by a hard-working style, dedicated to defense and fundamental play. “What Coach James and this program are about can be seen in how successful past players have been in their lives,” said former team captain Josh Erickson. “Coach got us ready not just for the next opponent, but for the next step in our lives as well.” As impressive as his on-court resume are the achievements of his players in the classroom. The Bearcats have consistently produced quality team GPAs and 10 players have earned scholar-athlete awards. Former team captains Brad Nelson ’99, Kip Ioane ’01 and Ryan Hepp ’03 were on the list of national finalists for the Josten’s

Trophy, an award given annually to a player in NCAA Division III who has combined basketball success with achievements off the court. Also, Shawn Gahr, a team captain in 2000, was a Wall Street Journal Student of the Year during his final season. James’ career spans beyond Willamette. As a high school coach for 22 years, he compiled a 340-129 (.598) overall record. In 1994, he was named head coach of the Japanese National Team and led the squad to a bronze medal in the Asian Olympics, for Japan’s first basketball medal in 21 years. He is director of the Pro Classic Hoop Camp. With over 15,000 campers to its credit, Pro Classic is a key part of Oregon Youth Activities. It all began when James started the camp with NBA Hall of Fame Coach Jack Ramsay. James and his wife, Peggy, live in Keizer. They have three grown children: Ken, Don and Cheri, as well as eight grandchildren.

Willamette Head Coach Gordie James enters his 21st year with a record of 334-204 (.621).

Assistant Coaches Willamette Men’s Basketball 2007-08

Wally Wing

Kip Ioane

Assistant Coach (21st year)

Assistant Coach (7th year)

Wally Wing returns for his 21st season as an assistant coach with Bearcat Hoop. He has supplied significant contributions to the team over the past two decades, while working with Head Coach Gordie James to develop a highly-successful program. He helped coach WU to a 29-4 record and the NAIA National Championship in 1992-93. He is greatly respected throughout the region for his coaching abilities. He also possesses a friendly personality and a great sense of humor that the Bearcats appreciate each season. Wing and his wife, Margot, live nearby in Keizer with their son, Austin, and their daughter, Avery. Wing also is employed as the physical education teacher at Gubser Elementary School in Keizer.

Former Willamette player Kip Ioane is in his seventh season as a member of the coaching staff. He was a two-year captain and a four-year letterman for the Bearcats, and was a finalist for the Josten’s Trophy, given to the top NCAA Division III player. Ioane’s knowledge of the game allows him to successfully teach WU’s players. He also has the advantage of being a former player in the Willamette system, giving him an edge in guiding the Bearcats through their offensive and defense plays. A graduate of WU’s Master of Arts in Teaching program in 2001, Ioane teaches business at McKay HS in Salem. His wife, Kelly (Sorenson) ’01, was a star for WU in volleyball and basketball. Kip and Kelly are the parents of Lincoln born in May.

2007-08 Bearcat Hoop Season Outlook Willamette Men’s Basketball 2007-08 The Willamette University Bearcats are ready to begin the 2007-08 season with a balance of experienced returning players and talented newcomers. It may take awhile for the team to achieve an optimum level of consistency on both ends of the floor, but the skills are there for the Bearcats to develop into a diverse offense and a hardworking defense. The Bearcats possess exceptional depth at the post position. Willamette’s returning posts include senior Ian Mansfield, along with juniors Kyler McClary, Simon Currie and Tain Cantrell. Each possesses quality moves to the hoop and all four are strong on the boards. Corey Costantino played in all 25 games as a sophomore in 2006-07. He scored 5.4 points per game and shot 74.6% at the free throw line.

WU’s returning post players also can shoot from outside. Cantrell was solid with a mid-range jumper last year. Currie sank 24 three-pointers during the season, while McClary hit 21 and Mansfield scored 13. McClary averaged 11.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 2006-07. He scored in double figures in 16 games and grabbed five or more rebounds 15 times. Mansfield chipped in 9.5 points per contest. New to the Bearcats is sophomore post Cameron Mitchell. He played at Grant HS

in Portland, Ore., before spending last year at the University of Redlands. Mitchell has excellent scoring and rebounding skills. Willamette also has significant skill at the wing position. Senior wing Mike Smith is WU’s top returning scorer after averaging 11.1 points a year ago. Currie, in addition to playing at the post, also plays on the wing. He averaged 4.4 points per game and gave the ‘Cats quality minutes on defense. Mike Smith is WU’s top returning scorer. He tallied double figures in 16 games last year, including a string of 11 games in a row.

Also returning are junior wings Corey Costantino and Nick Babij. Costantino saw action in all 25 games during 2006-07. He scored 5.4 points per game and was solid in transition. Babij played in seven games and will battle for more playing time this year. New players at the wing positions are Sean Spang and Dillon Middleton. Spang was selected Second Team All-Metro in the Portland area, then attended the University of Oregon as a student last year. Middleton received First Team All-League recognition at Lebanon HS in Oregon in 2006-07. WU is young at point guard, but has two talented freshmen. Robbie Kunke, who was a First Team Three Rivers League All-Star, is athletic and can score. Ricky Thompson, from Temecula Valley HS (Calif.), averaged 13.1 points and 5.1 assists as a senior. Head Coach Gordie James will take the Bearcats to nine consecutive road games to start his 21st season of Bearcat Hoop. He plans to build the team into a squad ready to take on the Northwest Conference in January and February. James has led WU to 15 winning seasons since 1987-88.

Conference and National Affiliations Willamette Men’s Basketball 2007-08

NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, employees care about the well-being of their student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine prviate colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plus Whitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 included Willamette, College of Idaho (Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (UPS). Albany College was added in 1931 and remained for seven

years, then departed and returned in 1949 as Lewis and Clark College. The next member, Pacific Lutheran, joined in 1965, followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in 1988. Menlo College joined the NWC in 2006 in football only. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.
