Willamette offers a high-level education along with athletic success Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to 1842. Students and employees at Willamette are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful, tree-lined campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the quality curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. The faculty and staff bring a wide range of views and experiences to the the campus. Willamette’s student-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows faculty to maintain ample office hours and to serve as advisors. They are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. Willamette is selective and seeks serious and talented students. The average first-year student has a 3.76 GPA, an SAT score of

1230 and an ACT score of 27. Enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,943, with a total enrollment of 2,628. About 95 percent of Willamette students receive financial aid and scholarships. Football McCulloch Stadium 2007 Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats McCulloch Stadium provides the home field for the Willamette University Bearcats. Ogdahl Field at McCulloch Stadium is an artificial turf facility that is one of the top NCAA Division III facilities in the Pacific Northwest. It combines the closeness and atmosphere of an old-time stadium with such modern elements as FieldTurf for the playing surface, spacious locker rooms and a variety of meeting rooms. The stadium seats approximately 2,400 fans. All seating is covered, providing fans with comfortable setting even in inclement weather. The press box, located above the seating area, was designed with plenty of room for coaches, media representatives and the statistical crew. It also includes a booth for the public address announcer and official timer, as well as a booth for the Willamette’s president to host a variety of supporters and dignitaries. With lights surrounding the field, the Bearcats have been able to add another element to Willamette football with night games since 2004. The Bearcats also play afternoon games to take advantage of the sunny skies during most of the season. Another advantage is that the stadium includes an athletic training room, allowing Willamette athletes to receive treatments on-site. Football players have convenient access to athletic trainers at practices and home games throfughout the season. Likewise, Bearcat football coaches have office space at the stadium in addition to offices at the Sparks Center on campus. This is helpful before practice and allows coaches to watch films and hold meetings where they spend most of their time. Last season, Willamette’s home schedule included a 61-14 victory over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference game. WU has achieved a record of 29-18 (.617) at home since Mark Speckman became head coach. McCulloch Stadium also features the Charles Bowles Track, an all-weather facility that is the home for Willamette’s highlyregarded men’s and women’s track and field teams. The track also provides a great place for the finish of home cross country meets. In 2005, Willamette hosted and won the Northwest Conference and NCAA Regional meets in men’s and women’s cross country.

Season Outlook 2007 Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats

Football 007 2

Head Coach Mark Speckman (10th year) and the Willamette University football team have set high expectations for themselves in 2007. The players and coaches stressed quality during spring practices, remained focused throughout the offseason and arrived at preseason camp ready to compete with great effort. Speckman and the Bearcats anticipate great improvement after finishing 2-7 in 2006, including 2-4 in the Northwest Conference (5th place). Improved efforts in the weight room, plus effective spring drills and a great recruiting class, have the Bearcats confident they will achieve success this season. Willamette has won four conference titles and earned four playoff berths since 1995. During those 12 season, WU has achieved a record of 76-46-1 (.622). Willamette qualified for the NAIA Playoffs in 1996, reached the NAIA National Championship game in 1997 and achieved NCAA Division III Playoff berths in 1999 and 2004.

Offense Willamette enters 2007 with experience and solid depth at quarterback. Senior Kevin Whipps started all nine games last season, while junior Grant Leslie saw action in seven games. Whipps completed 61 of 116 passes (52.6%) for 798 yards and three touchdowns. Leslie connected on 20 of 51 passes for 284 yards and two TDs. Also playing quarterback will be transfer Ryan Whitcomb (So.), who joined the Bearcats in January from College of the Canyons. WU has even more depth at quarterback, as a group of skilled freshmen will battle for playing time. With so much talent in the backfield, Whipps will move to wide receiver, where the Bearcats can rely on his athletic skills. Such a move will allow Leslie or Whitcomb to be on the field at

the same time. Whipps also is expected to see some action at quarterback this season. “Last year, Kevin Whipps and Grant Leslie both played significant minutes and both showed real flashes of success,” Speckman said. “I’m also really pleased with Whitcomb, as well as our freshmen this season. We need a playmaker at that position. It’s going to be a good race.” Willamette also has experience at running back, but must replace last year’s top rushers, after the graduation of flanker Ryan Hernandez and fullback Kevin Dean. Hernandez led the Bearcats with 589 rushing yards on 85 carries. He averaged 6.9 yards per carry and scored five touchdowns. Dean also tallied five TDs, as he rushed for 310 yards on 50 carries (6.2 avg.). Although Hernandez and Dean are gone, the next three leading rushers return for the 2007 season. All three are running backs, led by senior C.J. Washington, who gained 203 yards on 51 carries. Skylar Swinford, also a senior, earned 168 yards on 40 carries, despite missing four games due to injury. Dan King, a junior, rushed for 125 yards on 29 carries. Overall, Willamette’s running attack will be faster than a year ago. Returning players Cody Anthony (Jr.) and Deon Horne (So.) will join a group of talented freshmen in pressing the upperclassmen for playing time. Following Dean’s graduation, the ‘Cats don’t have a true fullback this season, but Speckman isn’t concerned. He’s pleased with the versatility of this year’s group of running backs. “This is more like the ‘97 team (that went to the NAIA title game), where everybody was a tailback,” he said. “In our offense, both backs better be able to block anyway.” WU must replace Hernandez at flanker, plus wide receivers Mike Plank and Jonathan Irizarry.

The Bearcats are ready at the line of scrimmage last season. Kevin Whipps, who started all nine games at quarterback in 2006, moves to wide receiver this season.

Page 6

Phil Sweet (center) and Tyler Gill (left) tackle a Gustavus Adolphus player.

All three were seniors in 2006. Plank topped the receiving chart with 34 catches for 466 yards. Hernandez ranked third on the squad with 12 catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns, while Irizarry caught 10 passes for 126 yards. “Those three positions are going to be the most important to our success on offense ... that’s going to be critical for us,” Speckman said. Returning players include sophomore wide receiver Drew Shepherd and sophomore flanker Tony Krikorian. Both performed well during spring practices. Also providing experience will be Whipps, who possesses good receiving skills to go with a solid knowledge of the offense. Willamette has a couple of talented transfer players at flanker in Merben Woo, from Hartnell Junior College, and James Yamashita, who went to Diablo Valley College. Rounding out the flanker and wide receiver positions are several quick and talented freshmen. “We have some freshmen and some junior college players who have the potential to have an impact,” Speckman said. “We’re extremely talented (at the wide receiver positions). I’m just excited about this group.” Starting tight end Tony Davis, who caught 13 passes for 172 yards as a junior last year, will remain a key blocker and receiver in 2007. He was named Honorable Mention All-NWC. Josh Lee, also a senior, played in the offensive line a year ago, but will move to tight end this fall. Willamette will anchor its offense with an experienced line that includes six players who started all or part of last year. Senior offensive tackle Brandon Bennett, who earned First Team AFCA All-America honors in 2006, will lead

Football Season Outlook 2007 2007 Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats the line this season. Other returning starters are Scott Hirschberger (So.) at center, Jake Forshey (Jr.) and Joe Penkala (So.) at offensive tackle, and Robert Garcia (Jr.) and Justin Cole (Sr.) at offensive guard. “They did a really good job ... That’s the strong point of our offense going into the season,” Speckman said regarding the starters. Newcomers also will battle for playing time in the offensive line. The list includes several freshmen attempting to follow the examples set by Hirschberger and Penkala, who developed into starters as freshmen a year ago.

tackles and 46 total tackles in 2006. Fennimore added 24 tackles and Bettencourt achieved 21. Other experienced players in the defensive backfield are Grant Piros (Jr., FS), Matt Banta (So., RV), Carson Chihara (So., RV), Chris Wong (So., RV) and Artie Atencio (Jr.). The defensive secondary also features several more returning players, plus a group of talented freshmen. “We’re awfully young (especially at rover), but their attitude is great,” Speckman said. The Bearcats have five returning defensive players who were named All-NWC a year ago. MacCready and Sweet received Second Team All-NWC accolades, while Fennimore, Gill and Hermes were Honorable Mention selections.

Defense Willamette’s strength in the line continues on defense, where it is represented by returning tackles Mitchell MacCready (Sr.), Chris Mulitalo (Sr.), Matt Gomez (Sr.) and Jayson Vogt (Sr.). Those four players give Willamette tremendous skill and experience. MacCready led WU’s defensive line with 31 tackles a year ago, while ranking first on the team with seven tackles for losses and 3.5 quarterback sacks. Mulitalo added eight tackles and forced a team-high four fumbles. Gomez achieved four tackles, recovered a fumble and registered one sack. Vogt also achieved four tackles.. The team’s most experienced defensive end is junior Mike Reeves, who recorded 27 tackles in 2006. Six of his tackles were behind the line of scrimmage. Other returning defensive ends are sophomore Cory Lowe, who contributed 15 tackles last year, and sophomore Craig Sather, who added 10 tackles for the Bearcats.

Inside linebacker Taylor Hermes earns one of his 57 tackles last season.

WU Football Media Guide 2007

Special Teams Senior place-kicker Matt Bicocca hit 13 of 17 field goals the past two seasons.

“Those kids worked hard in the off-season,” Speckman noted. “We’ve got some explosive pass rushers and I think we’ve got the size and strength to hold up against the run.” Willamette’s top two tacklers return at inside linebacker. Phil Sweet (Sr.) held first place on WU’s tackle chart with 59 total stops. He also tied for the team lead with 27 solo tackles and ranked first with 32 assists. Tyler Hermes (Sr.) followed with 57 total tackles. He recorded 26 unassisted tackles and achieved 31 assists. Depth at inside linebacker will be provided by junior Jack Bevins and sophomore Andrew Ross. Bevins accumulated 14 tackles in 2006, then performed well in spring practice. Ross also worked hard in the offseason, after receiving limited playing time as a freshman. At outside linebacker, the Bearcats will try to replace Ben Weyerhaeuser, who graduated after ranking third on the team with 48 tackles last season. He tied for the team lead with 27 solo tackles and had six tackles for losses. Battling to take over the position will be junior Greg Dixon, junior Jon Feld and a group of solid newcomers. Speckman said he expects a spirited battle at outside linebacker and that “the new guys could push for some significant playing time.” Feld played in seven games and Dixon saw action in six games a year ago. Three key players will anchor the defensive secondary. Tyler Gill (Sr.) returns for action at cornerback or rover, while Ben Fennimore (Sr.) is back at free safety and Ryan Bettencourt (Jr.) returns at cornerback. Gill recorded 26 solo

Willamette should benefit from one of the top special team units in the NWC, as the list of returning players includes place-kicker Matt Bicocca (Sr.), punter Clint Moran (Sr.) and long snapper Stephen Shamus (Sr.), plus Atencio as the team’s top punt returner. The only specialist not returning is Wesley Randall, a Second Team All-NWC cornerback who averaged 19.8 yards per kickoff return as a senior in 2006. Bicocca earned First Team All-NWC honors last season, after converting 7 of 9 field goals (long of 47) and 19 of 22 extra points. Moran averaged 35.3 yard per punt and placed seven kicks inside the 20-yard line. Shamus provided consistently good snaps, while Atencio averaged 9.6 yards per punt return. “That’s another huge area for us,” Speckman said of the special teams. “We’re really excited about our specialists.” The top special teams battle will be at kick returner. It could be a key position, as kickers will boot the ball from their own 30-yard line (instead of the 35) this season. “We expect the new group of players to come in and compete (for WU’s kick returner spot),” Speckman said. “It’s wide open.”

Schedule Willamette will play a challenging schedule this year. The opener is a road game on Sept. 1 against nearby rival Western Oregon University of NCAA Division II. After taking on NCAA Division III rival Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn (Sept. 8), the Bearcats will return to Salem, Ore., for their home opener against California Lutheran University on Sept. 15. The home schedule at McCulloch Stadium includes defending NWC champion Whitworth University on Oct. 27 and arch rival Linfield College on Sept. 29. Other home games will be against Southern Oregon University on Sept. 22 and Pacific Lutheran University on Nov. 10.

Speckman has led the Bearcats to a combined record of 48-41 (.539) over the past nine seasons. He guided the 1999 and 2004 teams to 7-4 overall records and berths in the NCAA Division III Playoffs. His efforts earned him the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year Award in 1999. During his 13 years at Willamette, he has been involved in nine winning seasons with the Bearcats. He has helped Willamette earn seven or more wins six times and has contributed to the Bearcats’ overall record of 76-46-1 (.622) since 1995. Speckman is regarded in the coaching ranks as one of the foremost authorities regarding “The Fly” offense. “The Fly” brings the flanker in motion through the formation before nearly every snap. The flanker will take a handoff, block for a running play or become a receiver. It is an offense built on deception and quality blocking, where the ball may go in a number of different directions on any given snap. As a result, the Bearcats have provided their fans with an exciting, fast-paced offense. The

team has established many offensive records under Speckman’s guidance. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff, Speckman was a head coach at the high school level for 14 seasons in California. His high school teams earned a combined record of 113-48-3 (.698). Speckman coached Merced High School’s football team to national prominence during his eight-year tenure (1986-93). His Merced teams recorded back-to-back 14-0 seasons in 1989 and 1990, after going 13-1 in 1988. The 1990 team, voted #1 in California, was ranked #5 in the nation by ESPN and #10 in the country by USA Today. In addition to his coaching duties, Speckman also taught at the high school level. He grew up in Belmont, Calif., just south of the San Francisco area. He was the secondoldest of four children. After graduating from high school, he attended Menlo College in Atherton, Calif. He played football for two seasons at Menlo, which was a junior college at the time. He then transferred to Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., to complete his degree. As a player at Azusa Pacific, he was named NAIA Honorable Mention All-America at linebacker.

Speckman is not only motivational on the football field, but also is a popular speaker with educational and business organizations. He has delivered numerous speeches to school boards, teachers and business groups regarding personal motivation and achieving one’s potential. He was inducted into the San Mateo County (Calif.) Sports Hall of Fame in June of 2007. Willamette is 76-46-1 (.622) since Speckman joined the Bearcats as an assistant coach in 1995. As WU‘s head coach, he has earned a record of 48-41 (.539). At the high school level, he was 113-48-3 (.698).

He is serious about football, but has a great sense of humor that keeps his friends, fellow coaches and even his players laughing. He stays up-to-date on all aspects of the Bearcat football team, but provides his assistant coaches with the freedom to handle their position assignments. Speckman and his wife, Sue, live in Salem and are the parents of three children: Lisa, Tim and Julie. Tim works as an assistant coach on the Willamette football staff.

The Northwest Conference Football 2007 Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats The Northwest Conference is building a reputation as one of the most competitive NCAA Division III alliances in the country. The nine private colleges and universities situated throughout Oregon and Washington are nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC has changed membership and national affiliation during its 80-year history. It is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. The charter members in 1926 included Willamette, the College of Idaho (which is now Albertson College), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of Puget Sound (now UPS). Lewis & Clark joined in 1931 when it was

known as Albany College. It remained for seven years, departed, and returned in 1949 using its present name. Pacific Lutheran was added in 1965 and Whitworth joined the NWC in 1970. The College of Idaho left in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984, but returned in 1988. Menlo College joined the NWC in football starting in 2006. The Northwest Conference, which for many years sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent

Colleges in 1984 to become the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted national affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Although the NWC had a history of success in the NAIA, member institutions knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and genuine concern for student-athletes in all sports.

Football Season Review 2006 2007 Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats • Bearcats The Willamette University football team is not accustomed to losing. Since the 1993 season, the Bearcats have accumulated an an 86-45-1 overall record, including four Northwest Conference Championships and four berths into the national playoffs. WU reached the NAIA Championship game in 1997. Willamette most recently qualified for the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 2004. In 2006, the WU football team finished with a losing record for the first time in five seasons and just the third time in 14 seasons. Willamette was 2-7 overall and 2-4 in the NWC Heading into the 2006 campaign, Head Coach Mark Speckman and his staff knew they had a daunting task ahead of them on offense, after losing two All-NWC players in quarterback Cameron Walton along with running back Quentin Brock. Walton and Brock combined for nearly 70 percent of the team’s offense in 2005. Without Walton and Brock, the Bearcats failed to score an offensive touchdown in the first two games. Willamette eventually found its next offensive leader in senior flanker Ryan Hernandez. Hernandez, from Portland, Ore., was the team’s third leading rusher in 2005. On Sept. 16, 2006, he exceled against California Lutheran University, as he rushed for 83 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. All of his runs were in the first half, before he left the game with an injury Later in the year, Hernandez rushed for 116 yards against the University of Puget Sound, provided 116 more versus Pacific Lutheran University and gained 104 yards against Lewis & Clark College. Hernandez completed the season with 589 yards and five TDs on 85 carries. He

front of California Lutheran University by 10 points at halftime, before losing, 26-16. WU held a 14-7 lead in the second quarter against Linfield College and trailed just 21-14 after three quarters. Willamette lost to Puget Sound by eight points, 34-26, and gave eventual NWC champion Whitworth University a strong battle in a 28-14 loss. Six Bearcats earned Honorable Mention All-NWC recognition. They were Dean at fullback, senior wide receiver Mike Plank, and junior tight end Tony Davis on offense, as well as junior linebacker Taylor Hermes, junior rover Tyler Gill, and junior defensive back Ben Fennimore. Ryan Hernandez ran 85 times for 589 yards and caught 12 passes for 183 yards in 2006. He was named First Team All-NWC.

was named First Team All-NWC. Joining Hernandez on the First Team were junior offensive tackle Brandon Bennett along with junior place-kicker Matt Bicocca. For Willamette’s defense, junior tackle Mitchell MacCready, plus junior linebacker Phil Sweet, and senior cornerback Wesley Randall, received Second Team All-NWC honors. MacCready led WU in tackles for losses with seven, while Sweet led the team with 59 total tackles. Randall ranked first on the squad with three interceptions and blocked four kicks, giving him nine blocked kicks during his Willamette career. The ’Cats rallied past Menlo College for a 41-35 win on Sept. 23. Senior fullback Kevin Dean led the way by rushing for 168 yards on 11 carries and scoring three times on runs of 34, 21 and 29 yards. On Nov. 4, WU pounded Lewis & Clark, 61-14. In between, WU performed well against several strong teams. The Bearcats were in

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes in Division III, which has over 425 member institutions and is the largest of the three NCAA divisions. College and universities competing in Division III place the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities as the member of an intercollegiate athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Division III institutions must sponsor at least five sports for men and five sports for women. Athletes in NCAA Division III do not receive financial aid related to their athletic ability. Willamette and other Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the number and variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis

is placed on conference play and regional competition during the regular season. That doesn’t mean Willamette’s teams only travel short distances. As a member of the West Region in most sports, Willamette often sends its teams to California, Washington Idaho and even Texas for in-region games. It is common for Division III member institutions to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among their studentathletes and athletic staff. In Division III, coaches and athletic staff truly care about the well-being of their student-athletes.
