Willamette Athletics is the place for Scholars and Champions Willamette University, the first university in the West, has a heritage dating to 1842. Students and employees at Willamette are proud of its academic strength, as well as its beautiful, tree-lined campus. Academic success is typical for students at Willamette. More importantly, faculty and staff are concerned about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and are also expected to have fun, be active in the community and bring their own personality to everything they do. We’re proud of our students’ academic abilities. We’re also proud of our students as friends, neighbors and fellow citizens. They have found an ideal match between high-level academics and a variety of quality experiences as members of the community. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad, as many of our students

do each year. Our students also are actively involved in social and environmental issues. They are concerned about maintaining the beautiful Oregon landscape, while working to improve the lives of others. And so, while Willamette has the same academic expectations as the nation’s most acclaimed colleges and universities, we hope we’ve added something extra ... an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should both challenge you and make you laugh. Academically, Willamette has the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, the George H. Atkinson Graduate School of Management, and the School of Education. Cooperative programs enable all students to benefit from the overall curriculum. Willamette is known for its intellectual vitality, its cohesive campus community, its concern for every student, and its ability to balance a rigorous academic program with varied extracurricular activities. The faculty and staff bring a wide range of views and experiences to the the campus. Willamette’s student-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows faculty to maintain ample office hours and to serve as advisors. They are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. Willamette is selective and seeks serious and talented students. The average first-year student has a 3.74 GPA, an SAT score of 1240 and an ACT score of 27. Enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,943, with a

total enrollment of 2,628. About 95 percent of Willamette students receive financial aid and scholarships. Many students choose to attend graduate or professional school. Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings on 61 acres.

Willamette is fortunate to have a great combination of wonderful landscaping, beautiful trees and open spaces. Students also interact with a friendly and attentive faculty and staff. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State

Capitol and from being near other federal, state, county, and city offices. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations. Students also participate in a wide variety of volunteers service projects through the Community Outreach Program. The Willamette football team is involved with the United Way Days of Caring each year. Other WU athletic teams also have been active in the surrounding area through community service events. Salem, the state capital, is the secondlargest city in Oregon, with a population of about 147,000. Salem features a range of restaurants, theaters and other cultural opportunities ... many within easy walking distance. The Willamette River winds its way through Salem’s historic downtown district before flowing northward. The Pacific Coast is an hour to the west, the Cascade Mountains are about the same distance to the east and Portland is just 45 minutes to the north. Also in the region are the Columbia River gorge and Mount Hood.

McCulloch Stadium

Football 2008

Willamette’s Motto: Not unto ourselves alone are we born McCulloch Stadium provides the home field for the Willamette University Bearcats. Ogdahl Field at McCulloch Stadium is an artificial turf facility that is one of the top NCAA Division III facilities in the Pacific Northwest. It combines the closeness and atmosphere of an old-time stadium with such modern elements as FieldTurf for the playing surface, spacious locker rooms and a new scoreboard with jumbo video screen. The stadium seats approximately 2,400 fans. All seating is covered, providing fans with a comfortable setting even in inclement weather. The press box, located above the seating, was designed with plenty of room for coaches, media representatives and the statistical crew. It also includes a booth for the public address announcer and official timer, as well as a room for WU’s president to host supporters and dignitaries. Willamette has achieved a record of 31-21 at McCulloch Stadium since 1998, including a 33-32 victory over arch rival Linfield College in 2007.

With lights surrounding the field, the Bearcats have been able to add another element to Willamette football with night games since 2004. The Bearcats also play afternoon games to take advantage of the sunny skies during most of the season. Another advantage is that the stadium includes an athletic training room, allowing Willamette athletes to receive treatments on-site. Football players have convenient access to athletic trainers at practices and home games throughout the season. Likewise, Bearcat football coaches have office space at the stadium in addition to offices at the Sparks Center on campus. This is helpful before practice and allows coaches to watch films and hold meetings where they spend most of their time. Last season, Willamette’s home schedule included a 33-32 victory over Linfield when the Wildcats were ranked 12th. WU has achieved a record of 31-21 (.596) at home since Mark Speckman became head coach. McCulloch Stadium also features the Charles Bowles Track, an all-weather facility that is the home for Willamette’s highlyregarded men’s and women’s track and field teams. The track also provides a great place

for the finish of home cross country meets. In 2005, Willamette hosted and won the Northwest Conference and NCAA Regional meets in men’s and women’s cross country. The entire complex, which also includes Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium for baseball, is adjacent to Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths

and also is known for its art exhibits, rose garden, trees and expanses of open land. McCulloch Stadium is located just two blocks from the Willamette campus and only one block from Salem Hospital. With its proximity to the hospital, Ogdahl Field at McCulloch Stadium is occasionally used as a landing site for emergency helicopters.

Bearcat Locker Room Willamette has a spacious locker room at McCulloch Stadium that is used during all practices and home games. It features individual lockers with plenty of space for storing equipment. From the start of preseason until the end of the year, the Willamette locker room is a key part of Bearcat Football.

Season Outlook 2008

Football 2008

The First University in the West • Founded 1842 • Salem, Oregon The Willamette University football team has seven returning starters on offense as well as five returning starters on defense to set the pace for the 2008 season. Willamette opens its schedule on Sept. 6 by host Concordia College-Moorhead at McCulloch Stadium at 1:30 p.m. (PDT). Last year, Willamette was 4-6 on the season, including 3-3 in the Northwest Conference. WU defeated 12th-ranked Linfield College, 33-32, on a field goal in the closing seconds on Sept. 29. Willamette set school records for scoring and rushing with 599 yards and 11 touchdowns in a 77-17 rout of Lewis & Clark College on Nov. 3. The Bearcats lost five games by nine points or less, including a 20-17 overtime defeat against eventual NWC champion Whitworth University. Four of the defeats were by seven points or less. Willamette averaged 343.0 total yards per game, with 250.0 rushing yards per contest and 5.0 yards per carry. WU’s defense was stingy against the run, as the Bearcats held opponents to 97.8 yards per game and 2.8 yards per rush. “I’m really pleased with the conditioning our players did before coming back,” Head Coach Mark Speckman said. “We’ve had a good camp. There is a lot of experience on offense and at certain positions on defense.” The next sections look at what to expect from the Willamette offense, followed by the defense and the special teams. The final section examines WU’s overall schedule for 2008.

Offense Quarterback Ryan Whitcomb (Jr.) led the Bearcats with 677 rushing yards on 128 carries, an average of 5.3 yards per rush. He rushed for more than 100 yards in four games, including a season-high 128 yards against Pacific Lutheran. He scored three rushing touchdowns and threw for three touchdowns during the year. He was 44 of 85 (51.8%) for 480 yards passing. Whitcomb started the last five games after Grant Leslie (Sr., QB) suffered a knee injury in the win over Linfield. Whitcomb and Leslie are quality players who know the offense. Both are likely to receive significant playing time. Prior to his injury, Leslie was 33 of 83 passing for 432 yards and three touchdowns. Another top returning quarterback is Brandt Nevin (So.). Nevin played at Eagle Point HS. Three other offensive starters return in the backfield. Cody Anthony (Sr., FB) supplied solid blocking throughout the season and rushed for 137 yards on 22 carries (6.2 avg.). Merben Woo (Sr., FL) led the team in pass receptions, with 19 catches for 215 yards. James Yamashita (Sr., WR) caught 16 passes and topped the offensive chart with 232 receiving yards. Anthony will lead the way at fullback. He will be joined by returning players Jonathan Feld (Sr.)

Page 6

Depth in the offensive line will be provided by a group of quality players. Returning athletes include Adrian Lewis (Jr., OT), Dennis Plzak (So., OL) and Luis Guerra (So., OG). Talented newcomers include Kenneth Miller (Fr., OL) and Edward Salceda (So., OL). Starting at tight end will be senior Josh Lee. He played in all 10 games in 2007 and provided solid blocking for WU’s running attack. He also caught seven passes for 90 yards and two TDs. William Pohl (So.) will back-up Lee in addition to contributing in situations with two tight ends. The team must replace All-America offensive tackle Brandon Bennett (Sr. in 2007) and Second Team All-NWC running back C.J. Washington (Sr. in 2007). Bennett was named First Team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for the second season in a row. Washington rushed for 576 yards on 114 carries (5.1 avg.) and led the team with eight rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Ryan Whitcomb rushed for 677 yards and was 44 of 85 passing last season.

and Aaron Cavette (So.). Newcomer Solomon Frank (Fr.), who played at nearby McKay HS also will challenge for playing time. At tailback, Deone Horne (Jr.) saw limited action in 2007, but carried the ball 10 times for 109 yards (10.9 avg.). Also battling to be a starter will be transfer Kyle Johnson (So.), who rushed 25 times for 115 yards (4.6 avg.) at Assumption College last season. Other top tailbacks are Jose Green (So.) and Sean Donahue (So.). Woo and Yamashita will anchor the passing corps. They will be joined by returning players Drew Shepherd (Sr., WR), Tony Krikorian (Jr., FL), Marcus Woo (So., FL), Scott Schoettgen (So., WR) and Toby Moore (So., WR). Shepherd caught 11 passes for 135 yards in 2007. Schoettgen showed great promise before a late-season injury as a freshman in 2006. He missed last season with another injury and will return to the team this fall. Two newcomers will add to Willamette’s strengths at wide receiver. They are Andrew Patton (Fr.), from Tualatin HS in Oregon, and and Raymond White (Fr.), from Centennial HS in California. Three starters return in the offensive line. They are center Josh Hirschberger (Jr.), offensive guard Robert Garcia (Sr.) and offensive tackle Joe Penkala (Jr.). Also back is part-time starter Jake Forshey (Sr.). Hirschberger, Garcia, Penkala and Forshey contributed to WU’s exceptional rushing attack and solid passing game. The ’Cats picked up 174 first downs, including an impressive 121 first downs on the ground (12.1 per game).

Defense The Bearcats were dominant against the run in 2007. Not only did the team hold opponents under 100 yards per game for the season, but the ’Cats were even stingier in conference play. Willamette allowed just 73.0 rushing yards per game in the NWC, while holding teams to a meager 2.2 yards per attempt. Pacific Lutheran rushed for just 22 yards on 33 carries and Puget Sound earned only 32 yards on 40 carries. Two of Willamette’s five returning starters on defensive play in the line. They are defensive ends Marcus Ford (Sr.) and Cory Lowe (Jr.).

Senior defensive end Marcus Ford closes in for one of his 52 tackles last season.

Willamette’s Motto: Not unto ourselves alone are we born Ford was third on the 2007 team in tackles with 52 (25 solo, 27 assists), while Lowe finished fourth with 46 tackles (25 solo, 21 assists). Lowe was chosen Second Team All-NWC and Ford was named Honorable Mention All-NWC. Both provided exceptional pressure in the backfield and always seemed to be around the ball. Lowe registered team highs with 12.0 tackles for losses and 7.5 quarterback sacks. Ford ranked second in both categories (8.0 TFL, 3.0 QBS). Other returning defensive ends include Mike Reeves (Sr.) and Neil Bergquist (Jr.). Reeves and Bergquist have learned WU’s defensive set-up and should make contributions throughout the season. Last year, Reeves achieved 12 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for losses. A key newcomer at defensive end is Ryan Bourke (Fr.). Willamette graduated both starting defensive tackles following last season, but the team has a group of players ready to step in and make big plays. Returning Bearcats are Craig Sather (Jr.) and Aaron McKinney (Jr.). Ricky Najarro (So.) played in the defensive line for the ‘Cats in 2006 and is back for the 2008 season. Scott Reil (So.) was an offensive lineman at WU last season. He moved to defensive tackle this fall, where he will provide depth, along with new players Juan Alvarado (Fr.), Ronald Carter (Fr.) and William Zimmerman (Fr.). At outside linebacker, starter Matt Banta (Jr.) played in all 10 games a year ago and recorded 31 total tackles. He will receive assistance from sophomore Cole Douglas and from freshman Harmon Bruno. Several returning players lead the way in the battle for starting positions at inside linebacker. Jack Bevins (Sr.,) registered 21 tackles last year and Tommy Grove (Sr.) provided nine tackles. Also returning for WU are Andrew Ross (Jr.), Walter Robinson (So.)and Trevor Leaf (So.). In the secondary, starting cornerback Ryan Bettencourt (Sr.) and strong safety Arlin Taylor (So.) return. Bettencourt topped the squad with 11 pass break-ups and made 23 tackles. Taylor, who started at cornerback a year ago, registered 32 tackles, including 22 unassisted tackles. Joining Bettencourt as experienced corners are senior Artie Atencio and junior James Perez. Blaze Rogers (Fr.) showed great potential during the 2007 preseason, but missed all 10 games due to injury. Transfer player Jeff Kahler (So.) will challenge for playing time. Taylor is the likely starter at strong safety. At free safety, Grant Piros (Sr.) has experience. He earned 15 tackles last fall, including 11 solo stops. Piros also intercepted two passes in WU’s Northwest Conference game against Whitworth. Returning players Lukkes Gilgan (Jr., FS) and Carson Chihara (Jr., SS) will contribute at safety. Gilgan achieved 12 tackles and broke up two

Special Teams Last year, place-kicker Matt Bicocca (Sr. in 2007) and punter Clinton Moran (Sr. in 2007) earned First Team All-NWC honors for their efforts. Bicocca hit 28 of 28 extra points and made 7 of 12 field goals. He kicked a 42-yard field goal with four second left to defeat Linfield. Moran averaged 39.8 yards per punt, including a school record 67-yarder against Linfield. In 2008, a group of talented freshmen will battle for the starting place-kicker and punter positions. The Bearcats also have several players competing for duties as the team’s long snapper. At place-kicker and punter, Mitchell Rowan (Fr.) has gained the early edge for the starting position. Jorden Nielsen (Fr.) will provide a solid challenge, especially in the punting game. Brandt Nevin (So.) will supply depth at punter and will also provide depth at quarterback.

Willamette returns the starting punt returner and kick returner. Artie Atencio (Sr., CB) led the team with 17 punt returns a year ago, while Jose Green (So., TB) averaged 11.2 yards on 10 punt returns. Green also brought back 20 kickoffs for 454 yards, an average of 23.2 yards per return, inlcuding an 85-yarder. Also capable of making lengthy returns are Merben Woo and James Yamashita. Last year, Yamashita scored on an 89-yard kickoff return. The holder position will be manned by Ryan Whitcomb and Grant Leslie. Long snapping will be from Andrew Ross, Cole Douglas or Douglas Gilmore (Fr.). All three will look to take over for graduating four-year starter Stephen Shamus.

Schedule The Bearcats will play a challenging 10-game schedule, with five home games and five on the road. In addition to Concordia-Moorhead in the season opener, WU’s home schedule includes a non-conference game against Southern Oregon University (Reunion Weekend), plus conference match-ups versus Lewis & Clark College, the University of Puget Sound and Menlo College. Willamette will play a pair of non-conference road games in California, as the ’Cats are slated to play at California Lutheran University and the University of La Verne. The Bearcats will play NWC road games against Whitworth, Pacific Lutheran University and Linfield College. Mark Speckman is in his 11th season as the Bearcats’ head coach. He also served three years as WU’s offensive coordinator, including 1997, when the Bearcats reached the NAIA National Championship game. As head coach, Speckman guided WU to the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 1999 and 2004, and to the NWC title in 1999.

Mitchell Rowan (Fr.) kicks an extra point.

Head Coach Mark Speckman is in his 11th year as the leader of the Willamette University football team and is in his 14th season on the coaching staff. Speckman has led the Bearcats to a combined record of 52-47 (.525) over the past nine seasons. He guided the 1999 and 2004 teams to 7-4 records and berths in the NCAA Division III Playoffs. His efforts earned him the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year Award in 1999. During his 13 years at Willamette, he has been involved in nine winning seasons with the Bearcats. He has helped Willamette earn seven or more wins six times and has contributed to the Bearcats’ overall record of 80-52-1 (.605) since 1995. Speckman is regarded in the coaching ranks as one of the foremost authorities regarding “The Fly” offense. “The Fly” brings the flanker in motion through the formation before nearly every snap. The flanker will take a handoff, block for a running play or become a receiver. It is an offense built on deception and quality blocking, where the ball may go in a number of different directions on any given snap. As a result, the Bearcats have provided their fans with an exciting, fast-paced offense. The

team has established many offensive records under Speckman’s guidance. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff, Speckman was a head coach at the high school level for 14 seasons in California. His high school teams earned a combined record of 113-48-3 (.698). Speckman coached Merced High School’s football team to national prominence during his eight-year tenure (1986-93). His Merced teams recorded back-to-back 14-0 seasons in 1989 and 1990, after going 13-1 in 1988. The 1990 team, voted #1 in California, was ranked #5 in the nation by ESPN and #10 in the country by USA Today. In addition to his coaching duties, Speckman also taught at the high school level. He grew up in Belmont, Calif., just south of the San Francisco area. He was the secondoldest of four children. After graduating from high school, he attended Menlo College in Atherton, Calif. He played football for two seasons at Menlo, which was a junior college at the time. He then transferred to Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, Calif., to complete his degree. As a player at Azusa Pacific, he was named NAIA Honorable Mention All-America at linebacker.

Speckman is not only motivational on the football field, but also is a popular speaker with educational and business organizations. He has delivered numerous speeches to school boards, teachers and business groups regarding personal motivation and achieving one’s potential. He was inducted into the San Mateo County (Calif.) Sports Hall of Fame in June of 2007. Head Coach Mark Speckman guided the ’Cats to the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 1999 and 2004. He was the offensive coordinator for WU in the NAIA Playoffs in 1996 and the NAIA Championship game in 1997.

He is serious about football, but has a great sense of humor that keeps his friends, fellow coaches and even his players laughing. He stays up-to-date on all aspects of the Bearcat football team, but provides his assistant coaches with the freedom to handle their position assignments. Speckman and his wife, Sue, live in Salem and are the parents of three children: Lisa, Tim and Julie. Tim works as an assistant coach on the Willamette football staff.

2007 Season Review

Football 2008

Willamette’s Motto: Not unto ourselves alone are we born Willamette University played an exciting season in 2007. The Bearcats defeated arch rival Linfield, 33-32, to claim victory over the 12th-ranked Wildcats. WU earned a new school record for scoring in a 77-17 rout of Lewis & Clark. Willamette ran for 2,500 yards during the year and gained 343.0 total yards per game. Defensively, the Bearcats were relentless against running plays, allowing an average of only 97.8 yards per game and 2.8 yards per carry. Willamette held six opponents to less than 100 yards on the ground, including three teams with less than 45 yards. Willamette finished the year with a 4-6 overall record, including 3-3 against NWC opponents. WU played a difficult schedule that included two scholarship programs. The Bearcats lost five games by nine points or less and all three conference defeats were by seven points or less. The win over Linfield was a key result for Willamette, particularly since starting quarterback Grant Leslie, a junior, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the game. Ryan Whitcomb (So.) went in for Leslie and helped WU secure the victory. Place-kicker Matt Bicocca kicked a winning 42-yard field goal with four seconds left in the game. Leslie was 5 of 10 passing for 132 yards against Linfield. Whitcomb concluded the game with 127 yards on the ground. Whitcomb was the third-leading rusher in the NWC. He finished the year with 677

Merben Woo led Willamette with 19 catches last season. He also carried the ball 41 times.

The Northwest Conference

Football 2008

The First University in the West • Founded 1842 • Salem, Oregon The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a strong reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a very wide spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC has changed membership and national affiliation during its 82-year existence. It is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth (1970). The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but later joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges (WCIC) in 1984

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Football 2008

The First University in the West • Founded 1842 • Salem, Oregon Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and competes in Division III, which has over 425 member institutions and is the largest of the three NCAA divisions. College and universities competing in Division III place the highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on the successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek to establish and maintain an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities as the member of an intercollegiate athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Division III institutions must sponsor at least five sports for men and five sports for women. Athletes in NCAA Division III do not receive financial aid related to their athletic ability. Willamette and other Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the number and variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis

All-Region/All-District*

is placed on conference play and regional competition during the regular season. That doesn’t mean Willamette’s teams only travel short distances. As a member of the West Region in most sports, Willamette often sends its teams to California, Washington Idaho and even Texas for in-region games. It is common for Division III member institutions to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among their studentathletes and athletic staff. In Division III, coaches and athletic staff truly care about the well-being of their student-athletes.
