Willamette Head Coach Aaron Swick

Head Coach (2nd year) Alma Mater: University of California (2005) Aaron Swick is in his 2nd season as the head coach of Willamette baseball. He led the Bearcats to a 21-17 record last season, including 18-13 in the Northwest Conference. Willamette went 16-6 in the team’s final 22 games. Swick, who served as Willamette’s pitching coach and baseball recruiting coordinator in 2006 and 2007, became head coach in September of 2008. Swick was an assistant coach with the Green Bay Bullfrogs of the Northwoods League in the summers of 2007 and 2008. In 2007, the Bullfrogs went 43-25 for the league's best overall record and became the first expansion team in league history to qualify for the playoffs. The Northwoods League is a sanctioned collegiate summer baseball league. During 2007-08, Swick was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at South

Dakota State University. In addition to his coaching duties, Swick recieved a master’s degree in Sports Pedagogy from SDSU. Swick was a college baseball player at Saddleback College and at the University of California-Berkeley. While attending Cal, he was a key pitcher and achieved a 1.86 earned run average as a senior. He graduated from Cal in 2005 after earning a bachelor's degree in Political Science. He also pitched for two full seasons at Saddleback. He was named All-Conference as a sophomore, while helping Saddleback go 35-13 for the season. In the summer of 2006, Swick was interim head coach for the Wilson Tobs in the Coastal Plain League. In the summer of 2007, he became the pitching coach in Green Bay. During his four-year career as a collegiate and summer league coach, he has coached 25 players who have gone on to compete in professional baseball.

2010 Season Outlook

A solid group of returning players, plus a recruiting class with 14 freshmen and one junior college transfers, has the Willamette University baseball team seeking a highly successful season in 2010. The Bearcats hope to use increased speed and athletic ability to build on last year's 21-17 overall record and 18-13 mark in Northwest Conference action. Providing leadership will be four returning starters in the field, plus the starting pitcher who threw the most innings last spring. The returning starters at field positions are shortstop Doug Bloom (Jr.), left fielder T.C. Lee (Jr.), right fielder Mitchell Rowan (So.) and catcher Max Stepan (Jr.). The top returner on the mound is right-hander Devin Grindy (So.). Last season, Bloom achieved a .290 batting average, with 10 doubles and three homers. He scored 36 runs, was 9 of 12 on stolen bases and led Willamette with 122 assists on defense. He has achieved a career batting average of .311 to go with 89 hits, 75 runs and 49 RBIs. Bloom was chosen First Team All-NWC in 2008. He was an Honorable Mention All-NWC selection in 2009. Lee batted .347 last year, with nine doubles, one triple and nine home runs. He has pounded out 19 homers and 15 doubles during his career. He owns a solid .332 career batting average, and has recorded 55 runs and 61 RBIs. Lee was named Second Team All-NWC in 2008 and was Honorable Mention All-NWC in 2009. As a freshman last year, Rowan hit .296. He concluded the season with five homers and six doubles. He ranked second on the team with 32 RBIs and made 73 putouts in the outfield. Stepan split time at catcher last season and finished with a .273 batting average. He earned six doubles, one triple and two home runs. Grindy led the Bearcats in wins and innings pitched with a 5-5 record and 55 2/3 innings on the mound. He recorded 15 strikeouts. Ten of Grindy's 11 appearances were starts. He registered victories over NWC opponents Lewis & Clark College, Whitworth University, Page 4

Whitman College, Linfield College and Pacific University. Linfield was ranked #16 in NCAA Division III when Grindy earned a 4-3 win on April 19 to help WU split a 4-game series. The Bearcats graduated nine seniors last spring, including Kyle Stalker at first base and Jack McGee at third base and pitcher. Stalker was named Third Team All-America and First Team All-NWC in 2008 and 2009. He set career school records with 51 homers and 161 RBIs. In 2009, he hit .455 with a team-high 15 home runs. He established WU single season records with 22 homers and 63 RBIs in 2008. McGee hit .413 last spring, while leading the team with 38 runs scored and 14 doubles. He also belted five home runs. As a pitcher, he was 3-0 with a 3.05 ERA and four saves. He pitched in 11 games, including 10 relief appearances.

Pitching Grindy leads the way for the WU pitching staff as the most experienced starter from a year ago, but he isn't alone in providing the Bearcats with strength on the mound. Junior transfer Jerris Van Hess (RHP), from the College of the Siskiyous, will join Grindy as a starter.

T.C. Lee (Jr., LF) batted .347 last season with nine doubles, a triple and nine homers.

2010 Season Outlook The third starting position is up for grabs between several players. Returning pitcher Chris Torgerson (Jr., RHP), as well as freshmen Joseph Pelletier (LHP) and Jake Jones (RHP) will battle for the starting spot. WU will primarily use a three-man rotation since each NWC series will be three games played over two days. Starting assignments may change if Ryan Hood-Taylor (Jr., RHP) returns to action. HoodTaylor was WU’s top starter at the beginning of last season, but missed most of the year due to injury. He was 2-0 with a 3.66 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings prior to his injury. The WU relief staff includes quality arms. Scott Martin (Sr., RHP), this year’s only senior, was 1-1 in 2009 and has pitched 31 times in his career. Andrew Wyman (Jr., RHP) was strong in 2009 with a 2.45 ERA and a 1-1 record. He held opponents to a .227 batting average. Other important relievers are sophomore Blake Paisley (RHP) along with freshmen Parker Johnson (RHP), Brandon Simon (RHP) and Cameron DeLasantos (LHP). Pitching depth will be provided to the Bearcats by Nate Bender (Jr., RHP), George Colton (Jr.,RHP) and Sam Ellsworth (Fr., LHP).

Catching Last year, Stepan platooned behind the plate and also was a designated hitter. He has a .304 career batting average with nine home runs and owns a .972 career fielding percentage. Dylan Summers (So.) also will receive playing time at catcher. Depth will come from Ross Knutsen (Jr.) and Alex Brown (Fr.).

Infield Bloom will continue to anchor the infield at shortstop. He will work with new starters at the other infield positions. At first base, talented freshmen Kyle Kirwan and Derek Collins will battle for the starting job. Freshman Galen Duff has earned the starting spot at second base. Returning infielders Tim Schilf (So.) and Michael Oliver (So.) will battle for playing time at third base. Oliver played in 11 games last

year, mostly at first base, and hit .455. Schilf saw action in 15 games and earned 4 runs and 4 RBIs in 18 at bats.

Outfield The Bearcats have their greatest depth in the outfield, led by Lee and Rowan. Lee will remain in left field, where he achieved 56 putouts and two assists a year ago. Rowan will be one of four players rotating in center field and right field. He will be joined by returner Adam Reid (So.) and by freshmen Sky Kelley and Tyson Giza. Another player who will contribute in the outfield is Sam Sopko (Fr.). Utility players Mikey Lemon (So.) and Eli Kass (Fr.) will provide the Bearcats with depth at a number of positions.

Overall Team The team’s top returning players -- Bloom, Lee, Rowan, Stepan and Grindy -- give the ’Cats a quality core to build around. The team lost some offensive power with Stalker and McGee graduating, but this year's squad is more athletic and has greater team speed. Pitching depth is also deeper at WU this season, with a combination of improvement by returning players plus the addition of several new pitchers. WU returns pitchers who threw 60% of the innings for the Bearcats last season. "Overall, it is an incredibly talented group, the most talented team in my four years here," said Head Coach Aaron Swick, who enters his second year as head coach following two years as an assistant. "Our pitching is significantly better than a year ago. We won't hit as many home runs as in years past, but we're more athletic and have some guys who can really run. With only one senior, our young players need experience early to be tested for our tough schedule." Willamette opens the year at the Northwest Nazarene Tournament in Nampa, Idaho, on Feb. 19-20. The Bearcats will travel to Southern California for four games from Feb. 26-28. WU will open its home schedule and NWC schedule with a three-game series against Lewis & Clark on March 6-7 at John Lewis Field. Page 5

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

The NCAA and the NWC NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Page 18

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

About Willamette University

Historic Waller Hall (left) and Eaton Hall are seen from across the campus quad.

Willamette University, founded in 1842 as the first university in the West, covers 61 acres in Salem, Ore. Willamette merges its beautiful residential campus with the benefits of a downtown location in the State Capital. At Willamette, faculty and staff care about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and to be active members of the Salem area and their home communities. Willamette is proud of the academic accomplishments and well-rounded lives of its students. At WU, students have found an ideal match between the demands of a rigorous academic program and the ability to participate in a variety of athletic, social and community activities. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad or be locally involved in social and environmental issues. Willamette students are concerned about maintaining the natural beauty of Oregon and are also dedicated to improving the lives of others.

Willamette ranks among the country’s most academically respected colleges and universities, but WU has added something extra: an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should challenge you and make you laugh. At WU, the student-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and to serve as advisors. WU’s

professors are engaged in scholarly research and publish their findings, but they are primarily focused on teaching. Willamette is selective and seeks serious and talented students. The typical first-year student has a 3.75 average GPA, a median SAT score of 1840 (3 parts) and a median

ACT score of 28. Full-time enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,800, with a total enrollment of 2,605. About 95 percent of Willamette students receive financial aid and scholarships. Many students advance to graduate or professional schools. Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad and athletic fields. Construction is complete on Ford Hall, which includes Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford. Willamette benefits from its location across the street from the Oregon State Capitol and from being near other federal, state, county, and city offices. In particular, Willamette students are often chosen for internships with government organizations.

Salem, the capital city of Oregon as well as the second largest city in the state, lies in the center of the lush Willamette River valley, 47 miles South of Portland. Salem is located an hour from the Cascade Mountains to the east and an hour from the ocean beaches to the west. The population is about 147,000 and is growing each year at an average rate of 1.5 percent. Trips to the Oregon coast, the Cascade and Coast Mountain ranges,

as well as vineyards and high desert areas offer a variety of experiences. The varied terrain within 60 minutes of Salem provides some of the most beautiful scenes in the Pacific Northwest. Salem has many restaurants, shops, historic sites and museums. Several parks and the historic district are close to Willamette. Salem has a farmers market with local produce. The city hosts the Salem Arts Fair and the Oregon State Fair each year.
