About Willamette University Willamette Softball 2009-10
Students study and relax in front of the Mark O. Hatfield Library.
Willamette University, founded in 1842 as the first university in the West, covers 61 acres in Salem, Ore. Willamette merges its beautiful residential campus with the benefits of a downtown location in the State Capital. At Willamette, faculty and staff care about the overall success of each student, so the focus is not only on quality experiences in the classroom, but also on social and cultural development. Students are expected to work hard in their academic endeavors and to be active members of the Salem area and their home communities. Willamette is proud of the academic accomplishments and well-rounded lives of its students. At WU, students have found an ideal match between the demands of a rigorous academic program and the ability to participate in a variety of athletic, social and community activities. They exemplify the University motto: “Not unto ourselves alone are we born.” This motto is put into action locally and throughout the world. At Willamette, you can study abroad or be locally involved in social and environmental issues. Willamette students are concerned about maintaining the natural beauty of Oregon and are also dedicated to improving the lives of others.
Willamette ranks among the country’s most academically respected colleges and universities, but WU has added something extra: an equally important focus outside the classroom. Attending college should be fun, inspiring and at times invigorating. It should challenge you and make you laugh. At WU, the student-faculty ratio of 11:1 allows faculty members to maintain ample office hours and to serve as advisors. WU’s
Construction on the 46,000-square-foot Ford Hall was completed in 2009.

The average first-year student has a 3.74 GPA, an SAT score of 1240 and an ACT score of 27. Enrollment at the undergraduate level is 1,864, with a total enrollment of 2,663. About 95 percent of Willamette students receive financial aid and scholarships. Many continue their education in graduate or professional school. Willamette’s endowment is consistently among the largest in the Northwest and compares favorably on a national basis. The campus features 42 buildings, plus the Campus Quad, athletic fields and other open spaces. Construction is complete on Ford Hall, which includes Rhetoric and Media Studies, Computer Science, Math, Digital Art, Film Studies and Music Technology. Funds for the 46,000-square-foot building included an $8 million gift from Hallie Ford.
WU’s location is great for internships in government and politics.
Salem, the capital city of Oregon as well as the second largest city in the state, lies in the center of the lush Willamette River valley, 47 miles South of Portland. Salem is located an hour from the Cascade Mountains to the east and an hour from the ocean beaches to the west. The population is about 152,290 and is growing each year at an average rate of 1.5 percent. Trips to the Oregon coast, the Cascade and Coast Mountain ranges, as well as vineyards and high desert areas offer a variety of experiences. The varied terrain within 60 minutes of Salem provides some of the most beautiful scenes in the Pacific Northwest. Salem has many restaurants, places to shop, historic sites and museums. Several parks and the historic district are within walking distance of Willamette. Salem has a farmers market that offer local produce, and the city hosts the Salem Arts Fair and the Oregon State Fair each year.

Willamette Head Coach Willamette Softball 2009-10
Damian Williams
Head Coach (12th year), 220-173 (.560) Alma Mater: Seattle Pacific University, 1995 Damian Williams is in his 12th season as the head softball coach at Willamette University. He has earned an overall record of 220-173 (.560) at Willamette and has led the Bearcats to a 158-110 (.590) record in the Northwest Conference. In 2009, Williams guided the Bearcats to a 29-6 overall record, including a 22-6 record (2nd place) in the NWC. The Bearcats scored 214 runs (6.11 avg.), collected 293 hits (8.38 per game) and stole 102 bases (2.91 per game). Four members of the 2009 team were named First Team All-Northwest Conference and three players were named Second Team All Conference. Williams was selected NWC Coach of the Year in 2000, after leading the Bearcats to a 25-10 overall record and a second place tie in the NWC at 15-6. The 2000 team led the nation with an impressive 0.76 team
earned run average and was ranked #5 in the West Region. The success of the 2000 and 2005 teams indicate how much the team improved after Williams arrived. In 1998, the season before Williams took over, the Bearcats were 5-33 overall. Just two years later, the 2000 team was the most-improved squad in NCAA Division III, gaining 16 games over 1999 and up 21 games from 1998. Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff for the 1999 season, Williams served as the head coach at Shoreline Community College in Seattle for four years. His efforts gradually improved the team, which went 25-12 during the 1998 season, on its way to qualifying for the NWAACC Tournament. Williams graduated from Seattle Pacific University in 1995. He received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Administration. Williams resides in Salem with his wife, Genesis.

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

Conference and National Affiliations Willamette Softball 2009-10
NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.
Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.
Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.
Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2010 Willamette Softball 2009-10 Head Softball Coach Damian Williams and the Willamette University Bearcats have spent a busy off-season preparing for the opening of the 2010 schedule. The Bearcats have a young roster but return several key players from the 2009 team that went 29-6 overall and 22-6 in the Northwest Conference. “We will be young, but exciting to watch,” Williams said. Despite being young, the Bearcats are well respected around the conference. Willamette has been predicted to take second place in Northwest Conference softball this season, according to the league’s head coaches in the NWC Preseason Poll. WU was ranked in the poll behind only defending NWC champion Linfield College. The Bearcats return nine players from the 2009 team that finished second in the NWC. Willamette team captain Nicole Wallace (UTL) is the lone senior on the team. On the field, WU will be led by sophomores Alex Watilo (P) and Mica Romero (SS). Watilo finished her freshman season with a 13-3 record on the mound and a 1.20 ERA. She threw fourteen complete games with seven shutouts. She was chosen First Team All-NWC. Romero also earned First Team All-NWC honors following the 2009 season. She hit .378 and provided the Bearcats will solid defense at the shortstop position. Romero led the team in RBIs with 30 and was second on the team in triples (4) during the 2009 season. Sophomore Sierra Lessel (OF) made a huge impact for WU during her freshman season. The vocal outfielder led the team in batting average, hitting .418. Lessel also led the team in runs scored (28) and slugging percentage (.573). Returning at third for the Bearcats is sophomore Suzannah Von Trapp. Von Trapp hit a team high five homeruns as a freshman. Von Trapp scored 27 runs in 2009, good for second on the team. Susie Krewer (2B, So.) and Talissa Huntsman (UTL, So.) both made solid contributions during the 2009 season. Krewer led the team in sacrifice bunts (7) and hit seven doubles, good for third Page 22
Sierra Lessel (So.) will start in the outfield for WU. Lessel provides vocal leadership for the Bearcats. on the team. Huntsman was hit by six pitches last season, a team high. The young Bearcats will look for leadership from Wallace and WU’s only junior Bri Compton (P). Wallace and Compton are the only upperclassmen on a team that boasts nine freshmen and seven sophomores. Four of the seven freshmen are from Calif. The 2010 roster includes eleven players from the Golden State, three from Ore., three from Wash. and one from Mont. Willamette opens the season at the Northwest Cup at Hood View Park in Happy Valley, Ore. The Bearcats will face Concordia University, Northwest Christian College, College of Idaho and British Columbia before opening conference play at the University of Puget Sound on March 6, 2010. There is a sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J. Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. The building has basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is the WU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights and seats 500 spectators.
