2009-10 Season Preview NCAA Division III • Northwest Conference

Under the guidance of new Head Coach Leslie Shevlin, the Willamette University men’s and women’s swimming teams are taking the initial steps on their way to becoming top challengers in the Northwest Conference. Even the first achievements in the overall rebuilding process take a commitment to hard work and a winning attitude. Several swimmers will lead the Bearcats as they compete in dual meets and at invitational events this season. Here’s a look at Willamette’s strengths in each stroke and the I.M.

Freestyle Freshman Lauren Ballinger will make her presence known in the women’s sprint events, while Michael McGeehan will sprint for the men. The distance freestyle is shaping up to be a good event for the Bearcats with seniors Jenna Larrow and Kevin Tangeman leading the charge. Hanna Connett, a junior, returns after reaching the consolation finals in the 500-yard freestyle at the NWC Championships last season.

Butterfly Gwen Schulze, a senior, is looking to have a standout year in the butterfly events. At the NWC Championships last year, she finished in sixth place in the 100-yard butterfly and took eighth place in the 200-yard butterfly. Depth in the 100 and 200 butterfly will be provided by sophomore Kara Koetje and freshman Kayla Kosaki. On the men’s side, Tangeman will lead the way in the butterfly events, with freshman Ian McGahan also competing.

Backstroke Schulze also looks to make a splash in the backstroke events. Adding depth will be junior Chelsea Ibarra along with sophomore Laura Coddington. Jacob Munson-McGee will lead the men’s team in both the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke events.

sprint breaststroke will be sophomore Janelle Higashida. Connett and senior Lauren Gard will compete on the longer breaststroke events throughout the season.

Individual Medley Schulze, Koetje, Higashida and Kosaki give the Bearcats a formidable front in the individual medley. They also will be able to contribute in the medley relay events. Building for the Future Shevlin has a plan with three primary areas of focus for moving the swimming teams toward a highly successful future. “I need to get to know my swimmers and first meet their needs,” Shevlin said. “There will be some changes with things like practice ... and how we focus mentally for the road ahead, but to be competitive, we need to become a team. “My next focus will be recruiting,” she added. “I will seek out swimmers who can be held to the high academic standards of Willamette as well as the high standards I will be setting for the team. “My third main focus for rebuilding is community outreach,” Shevlin commented. “I know the swimmers want more support from the Willamette student body, and as a team, we need to reach out to the community for support.”

Willamette has talent and depth ready for the breaststroke events. Leading the team in the

Some of the most rewarding moments happen on the sidelines. Whether it’s a crowd of hundreds doing “The Wave” or a couple of parents holding a sign, this is the part of any game that hits home for us — people supporting people. In fact, it’s exactly why at American Family, we’re happy and proud to join the cheering section.

Willamette Athletic Facilities NCAA Division III • Northwest Conference

The Willamette Natatorium is the home of Bearcat swimming. It is attached to the Lestle J. Sparks Cemter. The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, also can be seen from a viewing area in the lobby. WU’s pool is a six-lane, 25-yard competition venue with a Colorado electronic timing system. The north end is composed of glass, opening to the Martha Springer Botanical Garden and allowing natural light to enter the natatorium. The Sparks Center includes offices for the Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise Science. There are also basketball, handball and racquetball courts, a weight lifting and fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Cone Field House is the home court for the Willamette men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The arena holds 2,500 fans, with plenty of seating on each side of the court. There is a sound system, plus tables for official timers, scorekeepers and statisticians, along with space for broadcast media. The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats 500 spectactors. The facility is one of the top college fields in the Northwest. Close to the Sparks Center and Sparks Field are six outdoor tennis courts. The Willamette men’s and women’s tennis teams host meets at the WU Tennis Courts against NWC opponents each spring.

The WU Natatorium features windows on the north wall providing a view and natural light. Bearcat Swimming 2009-10 Media Guide

Willamette’s football team plays home games at McCulloch Stadium, located two blocks from campus. The stadium seats 2,400 fans, has lights for night games and features a new scoreboard with a video display. McCulloch Stadium is a quality facility with a FieldTurf playing surface, along with spacious locker rooms, meeting rooms and an athletic training room. It has the atmosphere of an old stadium, but includes a variety of conveniences for the coaches players and fans.

Home meets are held at the WU Natatorium.

The Charles Bowles Track, located inside McCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility for the WU track and field and cross country teams. In 2005 and 2008, the Bearcats hosted the NCAA West Regional in cross country. Located near McCulloch Stadium is Roy S. “Spec” Keene Stadium at John Lewis Field, the home of Bearcat baseball. The stadium features chairback seating in part of the grandstand and an overall capacity of 1,000. The entire football, track, cross country and baseball complex is at Bush’s Pasture Park. The park hosts cross country meets on its wide paths and is known for its art exhibits and rose garden. On the east side of campus is the Willamette Softball Complex. It includes covered dugouts, batting cages, a scoreboard and bleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teams usually practice at Illahe Hills Country Club or Creekside Golf Club. Members of the men’s and women’s rowing teams have their own boathouse and hold workouts on the Willamette River in downtown Salem. Page 13

Conference and National Affiliations NCAA Division III • Northwest Conference

NCAA Division III Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over 425 members and is the largest NCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of the educational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academic programs. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with an athletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least five men’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities. Primary emphasis is placed on conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho, Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establish an environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff care about the well-being of student-athletes.

Northwest Conference The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Page 16

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes. Bearcat Swimming 2009-10 Media Guide

Bearcat Swimmers Help in Community

The Willamette University men's and women's swimming teams helped make the grand opening of the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center a success on Saturday, Sept. 26. Approximately 7,000 people attended the event. Prior to working at the grand opening, the teams held their morning practice. They helped out in two shifts, with each group working for four hours at the Kroc Center. Team members helped with various tasks, including the dunk tank, carnival events, parking supervision, bus direction and trash pick-up. The Kroc Center is an 11-acre, multi-purpose facility that will be used for a variety of activities. It includes an Olympic-size pool as well as a leisure pool in addition to a fitness center, rock climbing wall and 288-seat chapel. The Kroc Center will be operated by The Salvation Army. "We wanted to reach out to the community by helping with the event. We also wanted to make our new team visible in Salem," said Willamette Head Coach Leslie Shevlin.
